Fall Back, Lunge Forward by Jasonn Gonazalez Alper JCC Fitness Director

FAST AND FURIOUS Those are two of many words I can think of when I reflect on this past year. I hope you accomplished what you intended this 2017, and you are able to do more this 2018. Don’t forget, the way you start the year off sets the tone for the rest of your year. Making it a great one all starts with your mindset. HEADSTRONG TO THE CORE Some may argue that the glass is half-empty or half-full, while others might chug whatever is in said glass to eliminate the problem. Whatever the case may be, perception is the initial embodiment of what a problem can be. The way you train your mind to react to certain circumstances may very well

have the power to overcome or at least remedy the condition. Just one simple scenario such as hitting a sudden halt of endless brake lights in traffic congestion is enough to get you huffing and puffing. Someone cuts you off and you take it as if they insulted your mother. You feel the irritation creeping in, and may mutter - or YELL a few words that nowadays are more common on cable TV. You feel a rise in your heart rate, muscles tightening up ready for battle. And if you’re a believer in atmospheric energies like me, then you just radiated some bad juju into your aura. Instances like these cause your hypothalamus, a tiny control center in your brain that coordinates your nervous system and autoresponses (think thirst and body temperature), to radio in your stress hormones. While this is our initially controllable way of dealing with stressful situations, the long-term effects from repeating these patterns aren’t so great. Things happen, and we can’t always change certain situations. We can, however, change how we react to them. Training your mind the same way you train your body, will help you catch yourself in the act. I can further elaborate but there are plenty of books that can guide you into

managing your mind so your current stress doesn’t turn into a larger stress factor in the future. GROUP-X There are also activities you can do to improve your overall quality of life – activities we offer right here at the J. A newly revamped schedule with over 75 group exercise classes is now in full effect, with new additions and reshaped classes. Recently, Sports Anchor Jim Berry, our friend at CBS4, stopped by to take a Salsa Aerobics class with star instructor Martha and danced his way through the televised Moving U TV segment featuring our class. With a new approach to evaluating our classes based off usage data and analytics, and the addition of new Group Exercise equipment, we plan to continue offering the most fun and engaging classes in the area! LOTS MORE PARKING When the stage is set and the show begins, the seats will fill. Some may not mind standing room only, but some may. In our case, the JCC has seen an immense amount of positive changes over the course of just a couple of years. With that has come the problem we face almost everywhere we go: parking. While some don’t mind parking on the other side of our campus and getting a

nice warmup stride on the way to our Fitness Center, it can be discouraging to others. The long awaited parking lot construction is nearing its completion, and will provide just over 40 additional parking spots right alongside our Fitness Center building. There will be much to celebrate upon completion, with an eventful day of rejoicing with the J family outside in our new lot. FINAL THOUGHTS If you haven’t taken on the benefits of training with our certified Fitness Specialists, I highly recommend giving it a try. Right now, schedule your initial session with one of our professionals on the house. After that, you have the option of purchasing your following session at the introductory price of just $22.50! How’s that for jumpstarting your 2018? Be sure to follow us on Facebook for the latest on what’s going on at the J. For more info on our specials, feel free to contact our Welcome Desk at 305.271.9000 x284. Have a safe and prosperous 2018, be the change you wish to see in the world, and most of all – stay healthy.

04 | CenterStage | LISA ANN WATSON CHILDREN’S DISCOVERY MUSUEM

Young Architects — Designing the Future

Lisa Ann Watson Children’s Discovery Museum Jan. 14 to March 16, 2018 $5 per person; JCC members free; Field Trips free Imagine your child being the next great architect, following in the footsteps of Frank Lloyd Wright, Thomas Jefferson, Frank Gehry, I.M. Pei, or Zaha Hadid. In Young Architects: Designing the Future this dream can begin! From the Children’s Museum of Cleveland, this exhibit is a funfilled educational event that turns the Lisa Ann Watson Children’s Discovery Museum into a design environment that enhances problem solving, helps children develop motor skills, spatial, social and language skills, hand eye coordination, and a capacity for creative, divergent thinking. Children will learn about prolific national and local architects as inspiration, and use a huge array of block building media for a hands-on interactive learning experience. Young Architects is divided into three main areas - live, work and play - with each area highlighting a renowned architect accompanied by photographs of their iconic buildings. As children observe these various structures, they will be challenged to contemplate such questions as: Why does it look the way it does? What is it used for? What materials were used in its construction? Children will create their own masterpieces and learn about this important art form. Designed for children aged 2 to 8, they will: •

Build with natural wood blocks in hundreds of shapes and sizes. Architect Frank Lloyd Wright used blocks when as a child and believed block play influenced his modern style.

Discover the different architectural styles of Japan, Russia, the Middle East, Greece and Rome with multicultural wooden blocks.

Model: When architects design buildings they often make “scaled-down” models of the structure. Children can model their own structures using colorful geometric blocks.

Learn about schools, factories and skyscrapers. Children will see the progression of building height and design with the interactive “skyline of towers” and then create their own skyscrapers with giant interlocking blocks.

VOL. XXII, ISSUE III

Draw buildings at the inspiration coloring station.

Architecture is where we play: play is not only about sports and games; it is also about creativity and fun. Children will use wooden plank blocks to create complex buildings from basic shapes, like famous architect Zaha Hadid.

Use geometric foam blocks to construct a stadium for favorite sports teams and set up the plays with athlete figurines.

Get inspired like I.M. Pei by the pyramids, and build their own using giant waffle blocks.

Toddlers will use baby-friendly blocks, an important developmental tool.

Sponsored in part by MGE Architects, a Nelson Company. With the support of the Miami-Dade County Department of Cultural Affairs and the Cultural Affairs Council, the MiamiDade County Mayor and Board of County Commissioners.

FUTERNICK FAMILY ART GALLERY / ROBERT RUSSELL THEATER | CenterStage | 05

Andrea Goldsmith Paintings Futernick Family Art Gallery Nov. 28, 2017 — Jan. 14, 2018

Andrea Goldsmith’s paintings continue through January. These colorful works incorporate imagery of Venice and other places she has travelled in Italy, and Spain. Architectural elements such as grids, gates, hearts, and passages symbolize the passing of time, changes in direction, barriers to communication, lost love. Ms. Goldsmith lives and works in Miami and has garnered a large audience with her participation in Aqua Art Fair at Art Basel, ArtExpo 2016 in Milano, and at Clio Art Fair in New York City. She studied with the well-known artist, Wolf Kahn and at the Museum School, Boston. The vibrant colors of Miami have found their way into her paintings’ “surprising juxtaposition of forms, and richness of paint.” — Jon Imber, artist; Juror, Concord Art Association Concord, MA.

A New York native, she received her BFA in Fashion Design at Pratt Institute. Her transition to fiber art has allowed her to use the same medium in new and innovative ways. This beautiful new quilt collection includes mixed media along with dyeing, painting and many other surface design techniques. She has taught at FIU as Associate Professor of Fashion Design, was a COPE School South Volunteer Teacher, developed a Quilt Design & Construction curriculum for HS students and, as a HistoryMiami Museum Resident Artist in 2015, designed and created a wedding canopy for the museum’s permanent collection.

Mitzvah & A Movie Russell Theater at the Alper JCC Dec. 25, 2017, 11 am to 1 pm

Enjoy a showing of Dreaming of a Jewish Christmas and a special holiday community service project. Dreaming Of A Jewish Christmas is an offbeat, irreverent musical documentary that tells the story of a group of Jewish songwriters, including Irving Berlin, Mel Tormé, Jay Livingston, Ray Evans, Gloria Shayne Baker and Johnny Marks, who wrote the soundtrack to Christianity’s most musical holiday. It’s an amazing tale of immigrant outsiders who became irreplaceable players in pop culture’s mainstream – a generation of songwriters who found in Christmas the perfect holiday in which to imagine a better world, and for at least one day a year, make us believe.

08 | CenterStage | PRESCHOOL DIRECTOR’S LETTER / ADULT PROGRAMMING

Letter from Preschool Director

By Sandra Blasberg-Imar, Early Childhood Development Center Director

Each year, we celebrate the holiday of Hanukkah and remember the Maccabees. For eight nights, beginning on the 25th of Kislev, this year on December 12, we say blessings. We sing songs about the Maccabees, eat special foods and play dreidel. We read the story of the Maccabees and the children delight in the tale of the oil lasting eight nights.

On Hanukkah, the eight candles that are lit to commemorate the Nes (miracle) are lit with a special candle called the shamash. The role of the Shamash, is to “help” other candles. Even though the shamash plays an important role during the holiday of Hanukkah, in our classrooms, the concept of being a shamash, a helper, is practiced daily. Starting with children as young as the toddlers, children in each classroom have a “Helping Hands Board” or most commonly known as a “job board.” It is important from an early age to give children responsibilities and make them accountable. As children age and their perspective becomes less egocentric, they begin to understand the impact that their actions have on the world around them. To help further develop this awareness, we ask children to find ways to be a Shamash, a helper, within the classroom. Another important aspect of the holiday of Hanukkah that we explore is the idea of finding miracles. Young children are beings of wonder. To a young child, so many things throughout the day are awesome, incredible, and

even miraculous. Teachers of young children foster this wonder, and support the discovery of daily miracles. Good educators have opportunities every day to help children see the miracles all around them. Hanukkah can set the tone for the rest of the year, guiding children to be miracle seekers. Once a class has learned about the miracles of Hanukkah, the question, “Are there any miracles today?” can be the provocation for discovery for the rest of the year. I encourage you to reflect upon what you do at home as well. Think… Do I give my child responsibilities at home? How can I support the idea of being a shamash, helper? What values am I teaching my child if I give him responsibilities? Do I listen to my child when she/he finds a miracle in life? How do I help my child see the “wows” in life? Do I see the wonder of life, or am I too busy for that? Wishing all our families a Chag Hanukkah Sameach!
