President’s Message

Front&Center JCC Maccabi Games & ArtsFest 2017 THANKS TO OUR COMMMUNITY

As I write this, I have a moment to reflect on the epic week we have just completed at the 2017 JCC Maccabi Games® and Artsfest® in honor of Herschel Rosenthal. Now that all is said and done, our community has welcomed approximately 1,100 visiting athletes and participants from all over the country along with delegations from Israel, Great Britain, Mexico, Canada and Panama. This community opened the doors to over 300 of its homes in this effort and provided over 10,000 volunteer hours. We have served over 15,000 meals and provided hundreds of shoes to those in need through our JCC Cares project. During the week of the games, we put on a showcase for these visiting guests that began with Opening Ceremonies at the Watsco Center on the campus of the University of Miami where Dan Le Batard & Micheal Baiamonte welcomed our guests, and continued to venues at Florida International University, Temple Beth Am, Gulliver and the Miami Dade County Fair Grounds. None of this could have been accomplished without the support of our wonderful community from our partners at neighboring synagogues to the boundless support provided by the Greater Miami Jewish Federation. For all of those who were fortunate enough to participate and to play a role in JCC Maccabi, we thank you for your support. As JCC Maccabi has come to a close, my time as Board Chair has also come to an end. It has been one of the great joys of my life to serve this agency where I grew up and where I have been fortunate enough to be able to see my children grow up. As I transition out, I know the agency is in strong hands as I pass the torch to Rachel Camber, a long-time board member who brings many years of service to our community. Rachel has served in many capacities on our Board from her role as Treasurer to serving as a co-chair of the JCC Maccabi games. I wish Rachel great success and know she will be a great steward of the agency over the next few years.

Thank you, Joshua Rader President, Dave and Mary Alper JCC

J Fitness Summertime Scoop by Jasonn Gonazalez Alper JCC Fitness Director

Those who know me can tell you I’m all about incorporating fitness into my life. Whether it’s making small tweaks in my lifestyle like parking further or taking the stairs over elevators, or simply having a career geared in the industry. On my off days, I typically engage in outdoor activities if I don’t feel like pounding out weighted reps and sled runs in the gym. I love the outdoors. But unfortunately, with skin resembling casper the friendly ghost, the Miami sun isn’t always my best friend.

Just walking through Miami’s steamy temps for a few minutes is enough to heat one’s mood up, and getting a good workout outdoors doesn’t work for all of us during the later part of the Summer. So what do you do when it’s too hot out to work out, and you’re not really feeling re-visitations with the gym equipment indoors? Group Exercise classes, of course. The classes are much more than an exciting social experience where you sweat out to upbeat tunes and encouraging shouts from our instructors. It’s an opportunity to learn something new, build strength and work beyond your perceived expectations. Cultivate your healthy lifestyle and train in the comfort of your own homeaway-from-home at the J to enter the Fall like a champion. For the first time ever, early this year we test drove a few classes utilizing a monthly Spotlight Class feature. Every Thursday evening at 7PM held the slot to a different class each month – in the manner of your favorite coffee house’s flavor of the month. TRX, Zumba+POUND,

Country Line Dancing and some creative HIIT classes all took part. One class kicked its way through the series of features and earned itself a permanent Thursday evening 7pm slot. Cardio Kickboxing with Santiago was showcased this past July, being one of our more indemand classes. JCC members got just enough outside exercise to build up an electric warm-up, followed by an intense cardio and kickboxing partner session suitable for all levels. And that’s not the only addition thrown into our mix of over 75 group ex classes. With the continuous popularity of our Country Line Dancing classes with Misty and Delvin, we’re excited to announce our newest variation of choreographed dancercise – Israeli Rikudim. Rikudim, or “dances of the people”, is a fun form of dance traditionally performed to popular Israeli songs. Join internationally experienced choreographer Karem as she takes you through what’s promised to be

GLEN GREENSTEIN EARLY CHILDHOOD DEVELOPMENT (ECD) CENTER, SENIOR ADULTS | CenterStage | 07

Letter from ECD Director

Bruchim Habaim!

Welcome to the 2017-2018 School Year While many families take time off during the summer, here at the Glen Greenstein Early Childhood Development Center (ECD), we have been busy planning for the school year. We are very excited about the time ahead of us and we are looking forward to a year filled with rich experiences. One of our main goals in our school is to create the feeling of kehillah, community, strengthening the bridge between school and home. This year we are excited to announce that our Parent Kehillah Committee will be led by our incredible Co-Presidents, Annemarie Araujo and Jenine Simon in coordination with Michelle AppelrouthRader, ECD Assistant Director and myself. We have spent many hours together planning exciting activities and events for the families. We invite all our families to get involved and participate in our Kehillah, our school will only get even better with your participation and involvement. As the school year begins and with Rosh Hashanah fast approaching, many parents wonder how to “teach” a child about the holiday. Instead of teaching, we at the Glen Greenstein Early Childhood Development Center, focus on exploring the “big idea” of the holiday so that each child finds a personal connection and by Sandra Blasberg-Imar meaning. First, teachers think about the “big ideas” connected to the holiday and how to make this idea concrete and meaningful to the children. These big ideas, together with the awareness of how to make them understandable to young children, serve as a framework for teachers as they plan explorations. For example, reflection and renewal is a central theme of Rosh Hashanah. How much more meaningful can the learning experiences be if children are being given the chance on a daily basis to reflect on their observations and experiences, and build upon them? Children are capable of exploring all of these “big ideas,” if exposed and given the opportunity to experience it on a regular basis. When the children are young the sounds and tastes of the holidays take the center stage; but as the children grow and develop, their ability to understand the holidays and their meaning grows and develops as well. Smells and sights of the holidays are incorporated, and the meaning becomes the main object of investigation. Wonderings and questions begin to emerge, memories from years past, memories from our parents’ childhood, the way each holiday is celebrated in other parts of the world and the big ideas of each holiday that can be carried on throughout the year to enhance and enrich our lives. For this new year try and find new ways to connect, strengthen and deepen relationships with teachers, administration, and other families. Embrace a new connection and find meaning in the holiday of Rosh Hashanah. Wishing you a good and sweet new year, Shanah TovaU’Metuka. Chag Sameach Sandra, Michelle and the ECD Faculty
