Health & fitness tips for a fresh start this fall
by Jasonn Gonzalez JCC Fitness Center Director
The sweltering heat in Miami can be anything but “swell” sometimes, making you forget that there are actually hotter places around the globe. Ah yes - Summertime in Miami is coming to an end. I hope you all enjoyed lessened traffic, mangos on every other corner, bi-polar weather and weekends at the beach admiring our tropical paradise. But who am I kidding, Summer is practically the only season in Miami other than hurricane season, and we’re reminded of that almost every day we step outside the house. Lest we forget to stay hydrated while partaking in any [outdoor] activities, and remember the importance of our health. The general up-keep of our health is the single most important thing in life, and some of the following tips can help you stay on track. Keep Your Workouts Engaging If you’re incorporating exercise in your life, awesome. If you need a little boost to get the ball rolling, no sweat (pun intended). - until you get started You don’t have to be a marathon runner to get your cardio in; as a matter of fact, you don’t need to run at all. Find an activity in which you can keep your heart and breathing at a constant rhythm, whether it be aerobic dancing, steady weight training or even hiking. We tend to drift off when things
don’t entice us…find a workout routine that works best for you, put on those headphones, find a perfect workout playlist and rock out! Benefits of Wheatgrass Superfood The flavor of sweet yard-grass may not be something you’ll run and find a toothpaste flavor for, but thankfully wheatgrass can be taken in just a single one ounce shot - or double shot if you’re daring, and they cost anywhere from $1.50-$2.50. On a personal note, I tend to avoid medicines when I can. When I feel a cold brewing, I take a wheatgrass shot! It may or may not help you, but it sure helps me fight off the sickness much more quickly. Wheatgrass is packed with every mineral needed, vitamins A, B-complex, C, E, I and K, protein and amino acids and 70% chlorophyll. A couple of ounces of this and you’ve just ingested about five pounds of the best organic vegetables. Healthify Your Social Drinking Of course, there are mixed reviews on drinking. Some say not to drink at all, while others say the occassional glass of wine here and there is beneficial. Whatever the case may be, as with everything, keep it in moderation. If you are enjoying a night out with friends having cocktails, order water in between your drinks. This way, you won’t ingest as many of those sneaky liquid calories and can minimize or even eliminate that overbearing feeling of regretful mush the next day. You can even spruce it up and order a glass of sparkling water with lemon while totally blending in with the other nightlife enthusiasts. You’d be amazed how entertaining the social world around you can be with an increased sobriety level. Participate in Group Exercise Classes Oftentimes, even the strongest warrior may need the help of his
fellow Spartans, to help keep him or her engaged throughout the beneficial routine that is exercise. Group Exercise classes at the Alper JCC are a perfect way to keep your mind engaged while you participate in fun activities led by the best group of instructors in Kendall. Indoor cycling (known to most as Spinning), TRX, Water Aerobics, heated and non-heated Yoga, Zumba, POUND and Country Line Dancing are great ways to get physical activity incorporated into your schedule. It’s much more fun when you bring a friend - as a matter of fact, bring a friend with this article and they can enjoy their first class FREE with you. After that they can get 33% off of their daily guest fees each time they accompany you, paying just $10 per class. Remember that these are just simple tips that can help in life, and not meant to treat, diagnose or cure. Be sure to check with your physician before embarking on any exercise regime and taking any supplements. Stay healthy!

Living among the olive groves of the Galilee provides, painter Moshe Kassirer and photographer Ofer Nov have both found the olive tree to be a source of great inspiration for their art. letter from the interim early childhood director
By Sandra Blasberg-Imar
I have had the pleasure of meeting many of you and would like to thank you and the Alper JCC community for your warm welcome. I believe it is important for ECD families to maintain a strong connection with those involved in educating their children, so I would like to share some details about my background and how it has shaped my career. Being born in Buenos Aires, Argentina, and raised in a Conservative family, I was exposed to a life of Jewish activities. I attended a Jewish preschool, studied in a Jewish day school, and participated in Jewish youth groups. As a young adult, I worked as a counselor at Hebraica ( Argentinean JCC) while earning my B.A. in Physical Education. Jewish life was a part of every corner of my experiences while in Argentina. VOL. XXII, ISSUE I
I have lived in the United States since 1997;and the importance of Judaism and my involvement in the Jewish community has continued. Living in the Chicago area, my husband and I immediately affiliated with a Conservative Synagogue. Moriah, the Early Childhood Center and synagogue, became the focus of my professional life. Hired as a teacher, I was quickly identified as a hard worker and passionate educator and was given increased responsibilities including serving as director of Camp Shemesh. While I was on staff at Moriah, I opted to further my Jewish learning by earning my Master of Arts in Jewish Professional Studies at Spertus Institute. In the spring of 2013, my family decided to move to Florida. I again turned to the techniques that I find most helpful – immersing myself in Jewish life and opportunities for continued learning. I began working at the JCC in Boynton Beach as the Curriculum and Jewish Education Coordinator. I was energized by the possibilities, yet aware that I was facing a big responsibility to bring innovative ideas and to help guide staff through the process of change. Then in November 2014, the position of Director of Education was offered to me, creating a new model in leadership for the school. In July 2015, I was selected to be part of the JCC Association Directors Sheva Institute. The fellowship is composed of 20 educators and new directors across the country that meet and study Jewish best practices in early childhood. We have met in Baltimore, LA, and Florida and I look
forward to our meetings in NY, Boston and Israel in December 2016. I am very excited to join the staff at the Alper JCC as the Interim ECD Director and bring my knowledge and experience in Jewish Early Childhood to the Glen Greenstein ECD. Building strong relationships with children, parents and teachers is my number one priority as we begin our journey together. Let me take a moment to quote Dr. Ron Wolfson the author of Relational Judaism: “What really matters is that we care about the people we seek to engage. When we genuinely care about people, we will not only welcome them; we will listen to their stories, we will share ours, and we will join together to build a Jewish community that enriches our lives.” Family engagement is essential to building a healthy school community. When families are engaged partners, children and their families have opportunities to celebrate Jewish life, diversity is embraced, and communication about each child is ongoing and supportive. Mark your calendar for a Meet and Greet on Wednesday, August 17th from 5:00pm to 6:00pm. Meet the teachers and visit the classroom before school starts on August 18th! Thenjoin me on the first day of school, Thursday, August 18th, for coffee and nosh during drop off. I look forward to hearing “your stories”. I am looking forward to a year filled with memorable experiences for our children, families and teachers. B’Shalom, Sandra Blasberg-Imar Interim ECD Director
