President’s Message
Front&Center fitness made personal at the j with precor & mindbody
Here at the Alper JCC, we recognize you as the individual you are—from the moment you’re greeted by our staff to the moment you step on our new Precor fitness equipment.
here’s what’s new:
As we approach the end of the calendar year, I have spent some time reflecting on 2016. Once again our annual Berrin Family Jewish Book festival has exceeded expectations with over a dozen amazing authors and record attendance at this year’s Women’s Day Luncheon. I would like to thank the JCC staff members and volunteers whose tireless efforts make our book festival one of the premier Jewish Book festivals in the country. We are also in the midst of our exciting journey towards the 2017 JCC Maccabi Games & ArtsFest® which will take place in Miami this summer from Aug. 6-11. The Games® provides an opportunity for teens to learn the value of teamwork, integrity, cultural pride and community service, while embracing Jewish values and building lifelong friendships. From home hospitality to volunteering for events, all of the community will have a role in this outreach effort for Jewish teens. We have a lot to be thankful for and look forward to this coming year. I would like to wish all of those celebrating Hanukkah and those of all faiths, a Happy Holidays and a Healthy New Year. This is a special holiday season as for only the fourth time since 1900, Hanukkah will fall on Christmas Eve and end on New Year’s. As a community of all faiths, we will all be coming together at the same time to share our cherished traditions and enjoy each other’s company. On behalf of the board of directors and staff, we wish you a festive holiday season.

Raising the Bar for Fitness in 2017
by Jasonn Gonzalez JCC Fitness Center Director
A few degrees cooler weather, while not necessarily sweater weather, is pretty welcome. Another welcome change is the new year: a chance and rather justifiable reason to set the tone for a positive, successful, and healthy 2017. If you haven’t tabbed in those resolutions and fitness goals, this is your friendly reminder to take action. Feel free to take a break from reading to do so—don’t worry, this article isn’t going anywhere. Visualizing your incentive as opposed to just thinking it makes a huge difference. But, more importantly, when it comes to your goals: stay focused. The most critical component of any lifestyle change is the right mindset. If your head isn’t in it then you have a little more of a challenge to overcome, and that’s okay, because the Alper JCC provides the necessary tools to make a challenging lifestyle adjustment easier for you. To start, our recently upgraded management system for classes, reservations, and personal training, MindBody, will empower you to get the most out of your fitness membership. Reserve a space in any one of our 75-plus weekly group exercise classes or schedule and pay for your next personal training appointment online or with MindBody’s easy-to-use mobile app. Receive a text notification if a spot opens up in a class that you’re on the waiting list for, or connect your Fitbit to MindBody’s app to view personal activity data achieved during your workouts. But that’s not all. Setting the trend in the latest and greatest of cardio equipment, we have upgraded all of our treadmills and ellipticals to Precor’s 885 units—high-end machines with an interactive touch-
screen interface. Like our recent Precor G8 stairclimber upgrade, these machines are preloaded with workout programs. Whether you want to test your fitness or climb the Statue of Liberty, these machines have it all. Complimentary personal fan rentals are available to members as well as USB cables to connect your mobile devices to all Precor machines. Keychain FOBs are also available to members wishing to track their Precor workouts, whether they be done at our facility or a gym with the same system, by simply waving their keychain over the Precor screens to load their personal profile and fitness data. With cardio equipment that now supports internet access on large touch-screens, we have recently made a significant upgrade in our WiFi to a more powerful internet service. Just as our members strive to reach their personal goals, the Alper JCC has and will continue to make strides to help you do just that. With an upgraded Wi-Fi network, improved towel service, weight room upgrades, and new sound systems, we welcome the new year and look forward to adding even more value to your membership at J Fitness at the Alper JCC in 2017.

The Holidays are upon us. Enjoy Stress-Less gift giving for you and everyone on your list. Give the Gift of Health and Wellness-Give the Gift of Massage. Dec. 18, 2016 - April 7, 2017
Framed: Step Into Art Watson Children’s Discovery Museum Framed: Step into Art will beckon children through the framework of famous paintings and experience art like never before. This exhibit transports visitors to a world where paintings “leap off the canvas” to create immersive environments for visitors to explore. Children will learn about American artists John Singer Sargent, Grant Wood and Louisiana Folk Artist Clementine Hunter, and also Leonardo da Vinci and Diego Rivera, by role playing in each painting’s 3-dimensional environment. As children move through the exhibit, they will be challenged to: From Big Chicken by Louisiana’s most famous folk artist, Clementine Hunter: Ride a giant chicken attached to a wagon create patterns or pictures using quilt blocks and create imaginary animals like Hunter’s “goosters” and more. From Grant Wood’s Dinner for Threshers: Set the table, cook a meal, put on costume overalls and sit down to eat, create symmetrical patterns using interactive software and more. From John Singer Sargent’s Camp at Lake O’Hara: Set up camp in the Canadian Rockies! Climb into a tent, use camping gear, cook a meal over a campfire (campfire smells included), tell campfire stories, flip through Sargent’s sketchbook and see his inspiration, use magnets to create a picture of a camping experience and choose camping items to bring on a trip.
Corn Festival from the Court of the Fiestas in the Ministry of Education Building by Diego Rivera, Mexico City: explore Diego Riviera’s fresco by adding flowers and ribbons of corn husks, create a mural by chalking symbols and pictures on a miniature building, and more. Many Monas: See a copy of the original Mona Lisa and several parodies. Children will see themselves as Mona Lisa with a cutout and mirror and draw their portraits.

Ghosts: French Children of the Holocaust, by Robert Hirsch Projects During World War II, over 11,000 Jewish children were deported from France to Auschwitz and other Nazi death camps in convoys that continued rolling until August 18, the day Paris was liberated. As the ultimate consequence of anti—Semitism, these children were among more than 75,000 French Jews deported. French Children of the Holocaust is an ethereal visual memorial to the children’s abbreviated lives based on documents and photographs collected by author, lawyer and Nazi hunter Serge Klarsfeld. These documents have been photographically reinterpreted to convey a haunting sense of lost human possibilities, an anthology that generates a composite cross-section of an archive database, historical reference and media narrative.
