Celebrating

Jackie Brannon Stutts International President

the successes of the past biennium is a traditional element of all International Conventions. As I stood before all the Convention attendees in St. Louis this past July, I was struck by the sheer number and magnitude of the successes we had to celebrate. Be sure to read the synopsis of the State of the Fraternity Address in the Convention recap on page 9 for an overview of these accomplishments. The achievements have been a full team effort. Every member has played a part in Alpha Gamma Delta’s drive for success via change and innovation. This past June, International Council had a board retreat to plan for the future. It was a fun but exhausting weekend. Our map of strategic goals is filled with plans to set Alpha Gamma Delta apart while making the Fraternity better for all our members. Here’s a glimpse of these goals. We are moving officer and volunteer training online, hosted

by our Learning Management System. This invaluable tool will give the ability to receive education at the recipient's pace and availability. Much effort will be given to the implementation of the Alpha Gamma Delta Experience for collegians. This programming is a "game changer" for collegiate chapters. In addition, plans are to spend resources toward developing our Alumnae Experience programming. While in the early development stages, this should help cultivate an even stronger alumnae support system. In accordance with the strategic plan, the Fraternity is focused on continuing to expand the number of active collegiate chapters. Already there are six colonizations planned on some great campuses by the end of fall 2014. Check out the listing of these exciting opportunities for growth in the side bar of the Convention recap article on page 9. Our goal is to reach 12,000 collegiate members with over 120 active chapters

by 2016. Additionally, to strengthen and sustain our existing chapters, plans are being made to give the utmost level of support. Safe, competitive and attractive housing for collegians will be emphasized in addition to chapters being financially secure because of good financial planning. We have reached the Fraternity-wide scholastic goal of a 3.14 GPA set a few years ago; our new goal is to reach 3.2 by 2016! Continuing to recruit and retain women who exemplify our values and live by the Purpose will become an even greater focus to assist us with our forward progression. We have many important goals to work toward. It will be a tremendous adventure with unbelievable rewards. I extend to you my most sincere invitation to connect with the other 160,000 members on this journey. Join us as we strive to Live with Purpose! Loyally in epsilon pi,

Jackie Brannon Stutts International President

Q quarterly

Dear Quarterly staff, As always, I enjoy receiving my Quarterly. This one was particularly enjoyable for me. The graphics were lovely, and the articles were engaging! I do have a question regarding the article titled "200,000 Books and Counting." I am a fourth grade teacher, and we just studied the Southwest region of the United States and heavily discussed Native Americans. I would have loved to have Annica's children's book while teaching social studies. The article did not say where we could obtain a copy, and I was wondering if you had any further information regarding this matter. Thank you for your time! -Jenna Frazier Xi-Illinois Wesleyan University Dear Jenna, Thank you for your kind words about the Quarterly. Growing Our Sisterhood at

St. Joseph's College

Above: Founding members from both collegiate chapters with Liz Harriss York, International Vice President-Extension.

Alpha

Gamma Delta Fraternity is pleased to announce the installation of Lambda Alpha-St. Joseph’s College, Long Island and Lambda Beta-St. Joseph’s College, Brooklyn on Saturday, May 5, 2012. These chapters are the 187th and 188th installed chapters of Alpha Gamma Delta. St. Joseph’s College has two campuses—Brooklyn and Long Island (Patchogue). Each campus will operate as its own collegiate chapter of Alpha Gamma Delta. Collegians from Zeta Tau-Seton Hall University served as members of the initiating team. Liz Harriss York, International Vice President-Extension, served as the Installing Officer. “It was a privilege for me to be able to install two new chapters, continuing Alpha Gamma Delta’s growth in the fraternal community,” said Liz said. “These energetic young women are sure to make an impact in not only their local community, but also in the greater world.”

St. Joseph’s College is a private institution located in one of the nation’s most diversified academic and cultural areas. St. Joseph’s educates over 5,000 undergraduates, with more than 1,000 on the Brooklyn campus and close to 4,000 on the Long Island campus. The university offers more than 23 undergraduate majors, pre-professional and certificate programs. Leadership Consultants Ashley Lamphier and Maria Carbenia assisted both of the chapters throughout their colony period. They will continue to be a support to the chapters in their second year of traveling. “Working with the colony at St. Joseph’s was an amazing experience. I am honored to be a part of their journey,” Maria said. “They are a phenomenal group of women and great additions to the Alpha Gamma Delta sisterhood. I can’t wait to see the impact that they make on their campus and their community!” If you live in the area and are interested in supporting this chapter, email ivpe@vst. alphagammadelta.org.

Convention Feature

In the heart

of the Midwest, St. Louis is famous for toasted ravioli, frozen custard and, of course, the Gateway Arch. The Arch may be nicknamed the “Gateway to the West,” but from July 18 through July 21, 2012, it was more like a gateway to Purpose as over 635 Alpha Gams made their way to the Hyatt Regency at the Arch for an unprecedented celebration of sisterhood. The theme of International Convention was Live with Purpose, giving homage to Alpha Gamma Delta’s brand tagline and overall strategic vision. All of the programming related back to a central theme of our Purpose, and other events provided attendees with opportunities to cultivate acquaintances, cherish friendships, prize health and vigor, contribute to the world’s work and possess high ideals.

RAISING THE BAR

Since International Convention 2010 in Tampa, Florida, Alpha Gamma Delta has been committed to streamlining processes, making the best use of new technology to reduce waste and better the experience for attendees. In the past two years, International Council, members of the Volunteer Service Team and International Headquarters staff put their heads together to raise the bar in St. Louis. Rather than sending a registration and confirmation packet via email, a complete Convention website was created. Members could easily find Convention information, register for the event and get automatic

8 quarterly

summer 2012

confirmation of their registration and payment, all in one place. Because of the instant online registration and payment system, registration was able to stay open longer, giving members more time to decide if they could attend. On July 18, 2012, Alpha Gamma Delta’s 47th International Convention began with the Opening Session. After just stepping into the room, it was clear to attendees that a new standard had been set. Per usual, the flags of all Alpha Gamma Delta’s installed chapters lined the perimeter of the room, but the stage design stopped people in their tracks. Complete with two video screens, the stage spanned the entire room and featured an impressive, lighted backdrop with photos of Alpha Gam members and the new Fraternity logo. Throughout Convention, the video screens alternated between streaming live video from the podium and showcasing presentations. After Opening Ritual, led by Ritual Committee Chairman Penny Yocum Edmondson, Beta Xi-Purdue University, and the singing of both the United States and Canadian National Anthems, International President Jackie Brannon Stutts warmly welcomed attendees to St. Louis and expressed her excitement for this Convention filled with Purpose. “We trust that this Convention will provide you with the best possible sisterhood experience—an opportunity to form many new acquaintances, to cherish long standing friendships and to further commit yourself to living with Purpose,” she said.

Following a long list of introductions, the flag parade began. During past Conventions, the flags of all installed chapters were escorted into the Opening Session by a member of the chapter, but this year, in order to welcome and celebrate Alpha Gamma Delta’s newest chapters, the flag parade was adjusted to only include the chapters that had been installed or recolonized over the past biennium. As Alpha-Syracuse University’s flag led the way, the room exploded with enthusiastic cries and applause, which only continued to build as the flags for Delta Upsilon-Boise State University, Theta Psi-Austin Peay State University, Lambda Alpha-St. Joseph’s College, Long Island and Lambda BetaSt. Joseph’s College, Brooklyn entered the room. The State of the Fraternity video continued the celebration of Alpha Gamma Delta’s successes over the biennium. Attendees heard from each of our International Council sisters as they discussed the tremendous growth and positive changes the Fraternity has seen during the past two years. (View the State of the Fraternity video or checkout the main highlights in the sidebar on the next page.) Jackie wrapped up the Opening Session with a reminder that to truly appreciate the progress of the Fraternity, it is important to understand where Alpha Gamma Delta began. “Our 11 Founders were young women, from small towns spread across the United States, living in a world very different

HIGHLIGHTS FROM THE STATE OF THE FRATERNITY ADDRESS Expanding our Membership

from today. It’s a world we find difficult to imagine, where cars maxed out at 20 miles per hour, the average worker earned between $200 and $400 a year and women weren’t considered equals. But those 11 young women wanted more… more for all of you. They were looking for a Purpose, for both themselves and the inspired women that would follow in their footsteps,” she said. “They found that in Alpha Gamma Delta and left all of us a great legacy. I know our Founders couldn’t have envisioned in 1904 this greatness that Alpha Gamma Delta has become, but I know they would proud of the organization’s many accomplishments and the benefits that Alpha Gamma Delta has provided to each and every member. We are 160,000 women, from countries all around the world, continuing their legacy of wanting more, contributing more and living with Purpose.” On that inspiring note, attendees were off to the Dessert Reception to mix, mingle, enjoy sweet treats from around St. Louis and cultivate acquaintances with sisters from all parts of the world.

POSSESSING HIGH IDEALS

The extensive amount of feedback provided by International Convention 2010 attendees helped shape the many topics up for discussion in St. Louis. When International Council pieced together the final programming schedule based on the needs of members, they were amazed at how much the topics already aligned with the Purpose. It was quickly apparent that

the new brand tagline, Live with Purpose, would be the perfect theme. Thursday morning’s General Session kicked off the first day of programming. Guest speaker Stacey Bess took the stage to share her story of her first teaching assignment, the only job she could find, at The School with No Name. She taught kindergarten through sixth grade to children with no homes and little hope, but along the way, she learned the power of modeling love and self-worth. Her stories about the children’s antics and interesting views on life sparked laughter around the room, and other tales of the heartbreak of homelessness brought the audience to tears. She left the audience with a simple message: have a purpose, be compassionate and teach others to believe in themselves. Attendees had a chance to meet with Stacey after the General Session before dividing into various workshops ranging in topics from alumnae recruitment and engagement to the Delta Experience to the art of networking. The Leadership InstituteWomen with Purpose, Inc. also presented several programs, including sessions about using a great idea to making change happen and reflecting on the value of validation in our lives. Between workshops on both Thursday and Saturday, area experts facilitated roundtables about a variety of topics not addressed by individual programs at Convention. With the freedom to come and go from each table as time allowed, attendees were able to get answers to their

• Over 7,600 collegiate sisters have joined Alpha Gamma Delta over the past biennium, and the Fraternity-wide quota result was 104 percent. From the first to the second year of the biennium, the Fraternity-wide quota result increased by 10 percent. • Alpha Gamma Delta installed five chapters, adding over 360 members to our sisterhood and developed a plan for helping our newest chapters transition into our Chapter Development Program. • By fall of 2014, new chapters will be recolonized or installed at the University of South Carolina (fall 2012), Villanova University (spring 2013), University of Southern California (fall 2013), San Diego State University (fall 2013), University of California, Los Angeles (fall 2013) and Appalachian State University (fall 2014). • Over the past two years, four alumnae chapters and clubs were started, and we have welcomed over 50 sisters through our alumnae initiate program.

Panhellenic Focus • With over 4 million active collegiate members today, and a current new member growth rate of just under 10 percent annually, the Panhellenic experience is reaching more women than ever before.

Financial Stability • Due to diligence regarding Fraternity finances, Alpha Gamma Delta International Headquarters was able to move to a new facility at 8710 North Meridian Street in Indianapolis. • The financial health of the organization is strong, as we continue to make our processes more efficient and adequately manage our finances. In fact, we have the highest level of assets in organizational history!

Providing Competitive Housing • The Alpha Gamma Delta Fraternity Housing Corporation, or FHC for short, was formed to provide safe, competitive and attractive housing for our collegiate chapters. specific questions about chapter bylaws, House Associations, member development programming and more. To further generate ideas and encourage the cultivating of acquaintances, each province hosted a “meet and greet” for attendees to meet with other chapters, clubs, Junior Circles and Volunteer Service Team members in that province. These “meet and greets” provided the perfect opportunity for Alpha Gams to share ideas, get questions answered and meet face-to-face with members they often only communicate with via email. A true highlight of the Convention 2012 programming was the launch of the newly revised Delta Experience during Friday morning’s General Session. Lee Woodham Digiovanni, Education Committee Chairman, took the stage to share with the audience the long journey the Alpha Gamma Delta Experience has taken and to officially launch the final component, the Delta Experience. An interactive video walked through all that the new program has to offer, exciting both alumnae and collegians alike as both Lee and the video communicated the program’s emphasis on practical workshops and alumnae engagement.

CELEBRATING TRADITION

This Convention marked the 50th anniversary of the Alpha Gamma Delta Foundation, and there was no better way to celebrate those 50 years than to throw a birthday party! Leading up to Thursday

10 quarterly

summer 2012

afternoon’s birthday luncheon, the Foundation hosted games and a fun photo booth throughout the day Wednesday to educate Alpha Gams on the Foundation’s mission and to pump up excitement for the party. Thursday’s luncheon was complete with hand clappers, fun music and, of course, cupcakes! In addition to presenting awards for creative and exemplary fundraising, Foundation donors spoke about their favorite gifts over the years and emphasized the importance of giving to the Alpha Gamma Delta Foundation. To honor Alpha Gamma Delta and the sisters who came before them, sisters gathered Thursday evening for the Ritual Services. During the Initiation Service, hundreds of Alpha Gams welcomed three new alumnae initiates, setting the stage for an evening of sisterhood and love at the Honors of Epsilon Pi Banquet, led by Toastmistress Cinda Zehner O’Connor. Established in 1919 as a unique way to recognize those Alpha Gams who give “‘faithful, continued and outstanding service to the Fraternity’ beyond what is properly expected for alumnae members,” the Honors of Epsilon Pi Banquet is always a much anticipated event. Sisters were thrilled to be able to share in the excitement as these honored awards were presented to welldeserving alumnae for their many years of dedicated service to Alpha Gamma Delta. All Honors of Epsilon Pi are awarded during the banquet, with the exception of the Circle, the highest honor in the Honors series, which is presented during

the Honors of Epsilon Pi Service following the banquet. As with the other Honors, the presentation of the Circle is kept a secret from the entire membership, including those receiving the Circle. Since 1919, only 22 Alpha Gams have been awarded the Circle, and there is always great anticipation before the Honors of Epsilon Pi Service. Gasps of surprise and awe circled the room as not one, but two Alpha Gams were presented with the Circle: International President Jackie Brannon Stutts, Gamma Delta-Auburn University and Foundation Chairman Benita Wilson Dick, Epsilon Delta-University of Texas at Austin. Witnessing a truly momentous occasion in Alpha Gamma Delta history created an atmosphere of appreciation and inspiration that carried through the remainder of Convention, setting an even greater stage for the Feast of Roses Banquet on Saturday evening. Dressed in their formal attire, sisters gathered Saturday evening to honor our alma maters, our Founders, our alumnae, our collegians, our initiates and our Fraternity as a whole at the Feast of Roses Banquet. Melissa Jacobson James, Rho-Iowa State University, served as the toastmistress for the event and spoke to remind sisters of all that this Convention and our Purpose has brought Alpha Gamma Delta and her members. “Convention has provided us that golden door of opportunity this week to build upon our strengths within the Purpose and the Fraternity. It has brought us all together in sisterhood to celebrate all that

we have become as a Fraternity, and the wonderful things we have to look forward to in our future,” she said. “What an amazing experience this has been. We’ve built cherished friendships, we’ve grown and developed ourselves and our groups, we’ve helped each other to live up to our ideals and it was all led by our Purpose. As we begin to go our separate ways tomorrow, let the Purpose be your guide. Let it be your solid foundation as you take your experiences home to share with your sisters, so that all may Live with Purpose.” When her toast drew to a close, the room was cast in darkness as International Vice President-Extension Liz Harriss York began to call Chapter Roll. Slowly, the room filled with light as each chapter name was read one by one, and sisters lit their tapers in honor of their initiating chapter.

RECOGNIZING EXCELLENCE

Following in the footsteps of a new tradition from 2010, alumnae and collegiate awards were presented at an awards luncheon on Saturday afternoon. However, because of the tremendous growth of the Fraternity in the past biennium, several of the collegiate award categories were broken down into five tiers based on chapter size, rather than the three tiers of previous Conventions. Between both alumnae groups and collegiate chapters, over 40 awards were presented in a variety of categories, including recruitment, scholarship, improvement, philanthropy and overall excellence.

Three Alpha Gams were also presented with the Distinguished Citizen Award at Convention 2012. The Distinguished Citizen Award was founded in 1959 to award alumnae who are outstanding in their professions or in civic, organizational, cultural or charitable work in ways that demonstrate the Alpha Gamma Delta Purpose. This year, the recipients were Marybeth Burnham Levine, Alpha MuPennsylvania State University; Michelle Johnson, Beta Omicron-Illinois State University and Beth Killough Chapman, Gamma Upsilon-University of Montevallo. Learn more about each Distinguished Citizen on page 14.

PRIZING HEALTH

Saturday morning, over 300 sisters set their alarms early to participate in the one mile Convention Philanthropy Walk. The walk began just outside the front doors of the hotel, with an impressive view of the Gateway Arch and wound walkers around through some of the best sites to see in downtown St. Louis. With the generous help of Alpha Gams across the continent and outside vendors, the Convention Philanthropy Walk raised over $10,000. The Greater Missouri and Southern Illinois chapter of the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation received $5,000 of these funds, with the remainder of the proceeds designated to the Alpha Gamma Delta Foundation.

LOOKING TO THE FUTURE

Though sisters had spent much time at Convention celebrating the past successes of Alpha Gamma Delta, when Convention came to a close on Saturday, Jackie Brannon Stutts was focused on looking to the future. A highlight in the next biennium will be the installation of new chapters at the University of South Carolina, Villanova University, University of Southern California, San Diego State University and University of California, Los Angeles. Immediately after Convention 2014 in Indianapolis, Alpha Gamma Delta will welcome a new chapter at Appalachian State University, adding a total of over 1,000 collegiate members by the fall of 2014. In addition, Jackie reminded sisters about our continued commitment to Live with Purpose in all areas of Fraternity advancement. The success Alpha Gamma Delta will undoubtedly see when using the Purpose as our guiding light will continue. “When I reflect on our Founders, I am in awe that they had the foresight to create a dynamic and flexible organization that could withstand the test of time and whose values could remain relevant for more than 108 years. I doubt that they could envision what we see here today,” she said. “And we are not able to see what the Fraternity will be in 100 years from now. But if we remain true to our Purpose and keep our values in focus, we will keep reaching the next horizon. I challenge you to all join the lifelong journey of living with Purpose.”

Distinguished Citizens The Fraternity is pleased to announce that three women who Live with Purpose received the Distinguished Citizen Award at Convention 2012. This prestigious award was established in 1959 to recognize alumnae for outstanding professional and community achievement. Michelle Lynn Johnson Beta Omicron-Illinois State University

Marybeth Burnham Levine Alpha Mu-Pennsylvania State University

Beth Killough Chapman Gamma Upsilon-University of Montevallo

In December 2008, Michelle Johnson experienced an event that would change the course of women’s lives in Afghanistan forever. While in Afghanistan with the U.S. Army, she was asked to help a 13 year old girl deliver her stillborn baby. It is forbidden under Afghan law for a woman to be seen by a male doctor. With no female physicians on base, it was up to Michelle to deliver the stillborn through the girl’s small pelvis without any medical background. Despite the traumatizing and horrific experience, the young girl survived and Michelle made it her mission to better the lives of Afghan women through the Afghanistan Midwifery Project.

While living in Tucson, Arizona, Marybeth Burnham Levine first learned through a radio ad that government assistance programs do not cover the cost of diapers, leaving those under the poverty line with very few options. Her husband’s job took the family to Detroit shortly thereafter, and with Michigan’s employment rate cresting over 15 percent in the spring of 2009, Marybeth knew the need for diapers was at its greatest. And so, the Detroit Area Diaper Bank was founded.

In November of 2006, Beth Killough Chapman was elected Alabama’s 51st Secretary of State. Under her leadership, the number of Alabama voters increased by approximately 200,000, leading to the largest presidential election in Alabama’s history.

The Afghanistan Midwifery Project is a nonprofit organization dedicated to provide women in Afghanistan with the pre-natal and post-natal care they deserve. The organization also raises money to support a health education program, remote women’s clinics and midwife medical kits. She hopes to one day open a full midwife school in the war-torn country. When she is not traveling in Afghanistan on behalf of her organization, Michelle lives in Chicago where she works as the Information Security Officer for the PrivateBank.

summer 2012

The Detroit Area Diaper Bank is devoted to providing diapers to domestic shelters, homeless shelters and numerous other community agencies. In just under two years, the organization has donated more than 350,000 diapers to over 45 organizations. With the help of a $5,000 Pepsi Refresh grant and numerous other community donations, the Detroit Area Diaper Bank continues to grow at an astounding rate, all because of Marybeth’s hard work and determination to fill this great need. Marybeth also served as the Chapter Advisor for Alpha Beta Chapter at the University of Michigan for four years before founding the Detroit Area Diaper Bank. She is currently Alpha Beta Chapter’s Operations Advisor. Marybeth and her husband, Steven, live in Detroit with their three children.

Additionally, she has streamlined the business division of her office with online business filings and created Alabama’s first Voter Fraud Task Force to fight against voter fraud in her state. She is also a known national leader in the valiant effort to develop internet voting for members of the military who serve abroad. She has received numerous military commendations for her advancement of the patriotic spirit in America. Outside of her political role, Beth is very active in several community and church organizations. She is the author of three books, one of which received the George Washington Honor Medal from the Freedoms Foundation. She lives in Birmingham, Alabama, with her husband, James, and two sons.

The Honors of Epsilon Pi The Honors of Epsilon Pi recognize faithful, continued and outstanding service to the Fraternity. Alpha Gamma Delta thanks these women for their dedication and congratulates them on their accomplishments.

International Council for the 2012-2014 biennium Jackie Brannon Stutts International President, Gamma Delta-Auburn University

Lesley Hubbard International Vice President-Alumnae Zeta Delta-Towson University

Amber Garrison Duncan International Vice President-Collegians Epsilon Phi-Texas Woman’s University

Entering her fourth term as International President, Jackie Brannon Stutts has worked diligently over the past six years to push the Fraternity forward, toward impressive growth and progress. Her focus on the Purpose remains unwavering as she beings this new biennium with her eyes set on membership development and growth, the collegiate experience and alumnae engagement.

Newly installed International Vice President-Alumnae, Lesley Hubbard, has consistently maintained a connection with Alpha Gamma Delta since she graduated from Towson University. Her role as an Area Coordinator has provided her with valuable insight to both the collegiate and alumnae experience, and she understands the need for innovation and forward thinking in her new role.

As the International Vice PresidentCollegians, Amber Garrison Duncan seeks to provide collegians and alumnae with “educational, social and cultural tools for every sister to develop into a woman who can bring the Purpose to life each and every day.” She believes that the Fraternity’s most valuable asset is its members.

“The ideal membership experience should be one of value—tangible and intangible— for our members. Strong collegiate chapters are a must, but strong alumnae support is the backbone of the Fraternity,” she said.

“The mentality of ‘that’s the way we’ve always done it’ will not launch Alpha Gamma Delta into the future, but keep her stagnant. If we continue to provide programming for our collegians and alumnae that aligns with our Purpose, our members will continue to grow personally and feel connected to the Fraternity for years to come,” she said.

Jackie’s alumna involvement with Alpha Gamma Delta began as an advisor for Gamma Psi Chapter at the University of North Alabama. Serving in various Volunteer Service Team positions over the years, she learned valuable skills that have been instrumental in her role as International President. At International Convention in 2012, Jackie was awarded the Circle of Epsilon Pi.

Lesley resides in Baltimore, Maryland, where she is the Assistant Vice President of Nursing and Education at Stella Maris, Inc. She wears the Arc of Epsilon Pi with Diamonds and Pearl.

“I want Alpha Gamma Delta to be the place [members] turn to feel comforted, embraced and empowered to manage these challenges because of the experiences we provide, using the Purpose as our foundation,” she said. “The experiences we provide at the collegiate and alumnae level must be adaptable to change to stay relevant to modern demands for individuals.” Amber lives in Indianapolis, Indiana, and was awarded the Crescent of Epsilon Pi at Convention 2012.

Liz is a resident of Atlanta, Georgia, and is the Chief Sustainability Officer for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. She is a wearer of the Arc of Epsilon Pi with Diamond. Marie Ford Palmer International Vice President-Membership Gamma Alpha-University of Georgia Marie Ford Palmer is returning to the International Vice President-Membership position. She has served on the board since 2006. She also has served as the International Council Liaison to The Leadership Institute-Women with Purpose, Inc. since 2007. She considers growth and retention valuable aspects for the Fraternity to focus on. Liz Harriss York International Vice President-Extension Gamma Phi-Georgia Institute of Technology Newly inducted International Vice President-Extension, Liz Harriss York, wants to see the Fraternity grow, but maintain its values and recruit quality members that will carry out the Purpose. She has a simple goal for the Fraternity: “to make every member proud of their organization, feel connected to Alpha Gamma Delta and grow and develop because of their engagement and involvement.” Liz said, “There should be opportunities at every level of the time commitment spectrum and for all stages of members. The ideal membership experience would allow members to contribute meaningfully in the decision-making and implementation of chapter programs and goals in a way that supports safety for all the members and bestows lasting and evident value to the individual and the organization to which they belong.”

“A fun, purposeful and inspired collegiate experience can lead to Purpose-driven, lifelong members who desire to contribute to the Fraternity long after their collegiate years. Development of our members as collegians and alumnae enhances their lives and their communities as they strengthen and share these skills daily. A strong Alpha Gamma Delta impacts her world,” Marie said. Marie currently lives in Atlanta, Georgia, with her husband and daughter. She has one married son. She wears the Crescent of Epsilon Pi. Bobette Sandifer Thompson International Vice President-Finance Gamma Zeta-University of Memphis As a past finance advisor for Theta TauBelmont University and Gamma ZetaUniversity of Memphis, Bobette Sandifer Thompson wants Alpha Gamma Delta sisters to stay involved well after their collegiate years and help to strengthen the Fraternity.

“I desire a vast, strong body of alumnae whose love for Alpha Gamma Delta inspires them to assist the sisters who follow to have a memorable collegiate experience and work together to support each other, the collegiate chapters and the Fraternity,” Bobette said. Bobette resides in Brentwood, Tennessee, and is the President and CEO of THE Children’s Academy and a founder of Child Care Systems of America, Inc. She is also a wearer of the Arc of Epsilon Pi with Diamonds. Rie Gerah Hoehner International Vice PresidentPanhellenic Affairs Epsilon Nu-University of Central Oklahoma Serving as the International Vice PresidentPanhellenic Affairs since 2004, Rie Gerah Hoehner strives to have the experience for members be enriching and last a lifetime. Rie said the ideal membership experience is, “one where collegiate members will feel included in a sisterhood that is fully successful, academically, socially and morally. As you move on, the ideal membership continues for you as a warm embrace throughout your lifetime, providing opportunities to grow, learn, lead and live a values-based life of contributing to the community around you with enthusiasm, grace and confidence.” Rie lives in Houston, Texas, and is the owner and president of The Wrap and Mail Room, Inc. collegiate news

For the Summer 2012 Quarterly, collegiate chapters were asked to share how their chapter contributes to the world's work. Read more collegiate chapter reports on the Fraternity website.

Theta Beta–Auburn University at Montgomery

In September of this year, one of our sisters was diagnosed with diabetes. While our chapter had many philanthropy walks and spaghetti dinners to support diabetes, not many of us knew exactly what caused it or how it could be prevented. We have since found a better understanding of diabetes and have come to realize that anyone is at risk. Supporting diabetes month in November, we participated in a local fundraising walk. In addition to the walk, the men of Sigma Alpha Epsilon Fraternity on campus joined us in “targeting diabetes” to raise money for the Alpha Gamma Delta Foundation. We look forward to support our philanthropy in the future as well as helping our fellow sister. -Courtney Singleton

Gamma Upsilon–University of Montevallo

As members of Gamma Upsilon Chapter, we contribute to our community by participating in various events that support its livelihood. Last semester, we participated in the Big Event, a community service event for the university where student groups performed home and yard maintenance tasks for neighborhood families in need. This semester we have participated in and been the winning sorority in all philanthropy events thus far, including Lambda Chi Alpha’s Pumpkin Fest, Delta Gamma’s Anchor Splash and Alpha Delta Pi’s Texas Hold ‘Em Tournament. We also sponsored a kissing booth providing heaps of Hershey’s chocolate kisses for area children during the university’s Fall Festival. Gamma Upsilon Chapter strives to contribute to our community as much as possible while bonding as sisters. -Mallory Mitchell

Zeta Delta–Towson University

Zeta Delta Chapter does our best in our community to contribute to what we can. Not only do we hold events and bake sales to support the Alpha Gamma Delta Foundation, but we also help support other organizations. We make a point to attend other events on campus to show our support. We also do other events such as Relay for Life, Tigerthon (an all-night dance to support cancer patients) and other walks to raise money for various causes. -Heather Kravitz

Zeta Zeta–Worcester Polytechnic Institute

Every fall, our chapter participates in a large community service event called Work on Worcester. Participants are divided up into teams that go around the city to work on different projects. This year, we had sisters paint over graffiti on walls, help clear brush in a local park and pick up trash that littered a city highway. Our chapter also participates in a local Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation walk every fall to raise both money for research and awareness in the community about juvenile diabetes. With some sisters walking and others helping run the event, the JDRF walk was a huge success. -Kate Davis

Epsilon Mu–Fort Hays State University

Epsilon Mu Chapter has been awarded Jewel Chapter status every year since 1997. We contribute to our community in multiple ways. A very dear one to our hearts is the Trick-or-Treat for the Foundation, and for a smaller chapter of 30, raising $1,500 in one week is a huge accomplishment. Every semester, we adopt a mile and pick up the trash along the street leading to campus. One Saturday a month, we volunteer for the Mothers of Preschoolers (MOPS) by babysitting their kids while the mothers take some time to relax. We supported Tigers in Service by logging the second most volunteer hours this past year. Volunteering makes us better women and more thankful and appreciative of what we have. -Carin Johnson

Gamma Phi–Georgia Institute of Technology

Gamma Phi Chapter volunteered at the Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta Christmas Parade by selling various holiday items such as reindeer ears, necklaces and bracelets in order to raise money for Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta hospital. In addition, we participated in the Campus Community Service Day, where we worked at an elementary school tutoring children and at a park cleaning up the area. We also held a bake sale and a pancake breakfast on campus. Both were very successful in raising money for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation. -Anna Kerlin

Delta Pi–San Francisco State University

Delta Pi Chapter dedicated more than 100 hours of time working in the community by volunteering at the local food bank, Blackie’s Hay Day, local beach clean-up, making blankets for local children with Project Nite-Nite and the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation Walk across the Golden Gate Bridge. Seeing our chapter bond through sisterhood and philanthropy events has made this semester one of the best for the chapter. -Toya Mayers

In Her Mom's Footsteps Jessica

Galloway, Theta Delta−North Georgia College and State University, grew up always knowing she wanted to be an Alpha Gam, even before she really understood what that truly meant. Her mom, Shelly Mauldin Galloway, was a member of Theta Delta Chapter in the 80s and loved to show Jessica photos and share stories of her days at North Georgia. It was where Shelly met Jeff, her husband and Jessica's father. (Jeff picked Shelly out of a crowd, telling his best friend that he was with that he was "going to marry that girl.") While dating Shelly, Jeff was selected to be Alpha Gam's sweetheart, so he had a few stories of his own he liked to share with his daughter, too. "I didn't really understand the whole sorority thing at that time," Jessica said. "But I knew it was something I wanted to be a part of one day. My mind was set." In 2004, when Jessica was 11, Shelly was diagnosed with breast cancer. For the next five years, Shelly did everything in her power to fight the cancer. But on March 24, 2009, she lost her battle. After graduating high school, Jessica followed in her parents' footsteps and enrolled in her freshman year at North Georgia. When recruitment season came around, there was no doubt Jessica wanted to become an Alpha Gam, just like her mom. "When I moved to school and met some of the Alpha Gams

Pictured: (Left) Jessica on her Initiation day. (Right) Jessica's parents, Shelly and Jeff, during their time at North Georgia. here, it reassured me that that's where I wanted to be," she said. It was a bittersweet day for Jessica when she received her bid to join Alpha Gam's Theta Delta Chapter. It was thrilling to finally be a part of something she'd heard of all her life, but at the same time, equally as sad to not have her mom there to share in her excitement. Learning about all things Alpha Gamma Delta in her new member meetings and experiencing some of the same Alpha Gam traditions helped Jessica find a new connection with her mother. At one new member meeting in particular, she received a very big clue that her mom wasn't so far away after all. It was time to discuss Initiation, and when the date was announced, Jessica was shocked.

March 24, 2012. Jessica would be initiated into Alpha Gamma Delta on the three year anniversary of her mother's passing.

Jessica's name and Initiation date. It was made complete with a photo of Jessica and her mom next to the inscriptions.

"It was just crazy. I just knew that it was meant to be on that date; it wasn’t just a twist of fate or anything," she said. "I knew she was going to be there with me."

Of course, March 24 has been a tough day for Jessica every year since her mother's death, but Initiation provided a brighter side to the day this year. Experiencing Alpha Gamma Delta's Ritual for the first time brought some peace to Jessica and made her feel even closer to her mom.

She immediately shared the news with her dad, who agreed that it was just all meant to be. Understanding the importance of both the date and the Initiation Service to his daughter, Jeff made plans to be at North Georgia the weekend of the event. The night before her Initiation, Jeff took Jessica out to dinner and presented her with a priceless gift: an Alpha Gamma Delta locket, inscribed on the inside with both her mom's name and Initiation date and

She knew that even if she wasn't there physically, her mom was definitely there in spirit. Jessica said, "It means so much to me. I’m so honored that I’m able to be a part of [Alpha Gamma Delta], and to be able to share it with her."

alumnae news Central Florida Alumnae Club

Atlanta Alumnae Chapter

Atlanta Alumnae Chapter The Atlanta Alumnae Chapter had several exciting opportunities recently. Sisters participated in volunteering at the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation Gala and at the JDRF Sugar Show (an interactive educational opportunity for Type 1 diabetic families). We also went on a tour of a historic home with the seniors from Gamma Phi-Georgia Institute of Technology. Some other fun activities this year included seeing the Atlanta Puppetry for the Arts Jim Henson tour, seeing the snow downtown at Atlantic Station, our annual white elephant holiday party and a pottery painting class. If you are in the area, please check us out, and we hope to see you soon! -Kristi Elgersma

Charlotte Alumnae Chapter The Charlotte Alumnae Chapter members enjoyed a private tour of the Charlotte Mint Museum, attended a live performance of "A Christmas Carol" and hosted several meet and greets in the area. This past spring, members held a Foundation fundraiser, "A Taste at the Lake," and attended our chapter's first ever combined International Reunion Day with Gamma Eta-High Point University. -Kim Matarrese Rectenwald

Greater Raleigh Alumnae Chapter Greater Raleigh Alumnae Chapter had another wonderful year. We participated in recruitment events at a couple of local universities with Triangle Area Panhellenic. We also hosted a bridal shower for a sister. In December, we held a holiday gift exchange and collected items for a women’s domestic abuse shelter. The new year was celebrated with a review of our Ritual which reminded us of the beauty of our Purpose and the continued significance of the Fraternity in our lives as alumnae. We raised nearly $1,300 for the Triangle Chapter of Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation during their Walk to Cure Diabetes, setting a new chapter record! We also were able to make an additional gift to JDRF and a $1,000 donation to the Foundation from our pecan fundraiser. We marked our Fraternity’s founding with a luncheon and keynote speaker who addressed women’s heart health issues. We continued support of our two adopted chapters, Theta OmicronWestern Carolina University and Theta Mu-University of North Carolina, Wilmington by sending cards, flowers, cookies, advising and visiting. We also honored a sister from each adopted chapter with sisterhood awards. -Charity Metz Schuller

The Central Florida Alumnae Club continued to keep a full schedule of fun, educational and philanthropic activities. We started with Alpha Gam Always at a tearoom and attended the Orlando Alumnae Panhellenic potluck. The Annual Christmas Brunch, cohosted with the Orlando Junior Circle, was a wonderful gathering at a sister’s festive home. We were treated to a private flute concert and held elections. In February, a group of sisters enjoyed a trip to Bok Tower Garden in Lake Wales, Florida. We ended the year celebrating the International Reunion Day theme of “Sisters: Gifts to the Heart” with a school supplies drive for A Gift for Teaching. Fundraising for the Foundation and community service remained at the heart of the club’s efforts. With the hard work of so many sisters, the Central Florida Alumnae Club joined the Jewel Society for the 10th year in a row! The successful sale of candles and personalized luggage tags and a garage sale helped us reach our goal. We volunteered as ushers at the Orlando Shakespeare Theater, collected personal care items for the Orlando Union Rescue Mission and soda tabs for Ronald McDonald House. Also, we were a top fundraiser for the American Diabetes Association’s “Step Out Walk to Stop Diabetes.” -Amelia Perkins Warren

Chicago Northwest Suburban Alumnae Club The Chicago Northwest Suburban Alumnae Club joined alumnae and collegiate sisters throughout Chicago at International Reunion Day celebration in April. A sister from our club served as the guest speaker, teaching us about the nonprofit organization that she founded, SEWonderful Quilts, which creates quilts for children battling life-threatening illnesses. Also in April, we supported our local Panhellenic association at a scholarship awards banquet for high school seniors. At our last meeting of the season, we installed our new club officers and sent our president and other members to St. Louis for International Convention. We had many exciting social activities and group tours planned for the summer, including a joint event with one of our Junior Circles. -Pollyanna Peremba Falk

Greater Portland Area Alumnae Club The club has ended another busy year with International Reunion Day and helping to raise money for our local philanthropy, Gales Creek Camp, and the Foundation with the American Girl Fashion Show! The event was a huge success for the second year, and we are already preparing for next year. We could not have done it without the amazing women of Phi-Oregon State University! There are many informal gatherings planned by our members during the summer hiatus, and we look forward to the start of another fantastic year in September! -Ellen Wenzel

Meet Working

Melissa

with Alpha Gam alumnae groups for over six years, Area B Coordinator Melissa Jacobson James, Rho-Iowa State University, saw a need for improvement in regards to keeping alumnae engaged in Alpha Gamma Delta long after their collegiate years. Mary Beth Dulcey Morabito, past International Vice President-Alumnae, approached Melissa to serve as the chairman of the Alumnae Task Force. Melissa saw it as the perfect opportunity to make a difference with the alumnae and their experience. The seven-member task force was created in February 2011. The committee had several conference calls to discuss solutions to inspire more active alumnae engagement. After creating, distributing and reviewing three surveys to various audiences, the task force found one thing to be apparent: “Members want to get together. Alpha Gams want to continue bonds in sisterhood,” said Melissa. The task force is currently in the process of writing proposals regarding new plans for alumnae engagement to be considered by International Council. “The opportunity to serve the Fraternity and to enhance the alumnae experience has been amazing, and I am thrilled to have been a part of supporting the lifetime engagement of our sisters,” Melissa said.

pearls of wisdom KNOW HOW TO

Improve Your Health

with Exercise By: Fitness Consultant Stephanie Mazzatenta, Gamma Beta-Florida State University

As

Alpha Gam collegians and alumnae, we have made many contributions to the research and prevention of diabetes on an international scale, but what about helping ourselves? Type 2 diabetes is a disease that builds slowly overtime, often causing it to go unnoticed and undiagnosed. So how can you take action and reduce your risk? Exercise! Research has shown that there is a 30 to 50 percent risk reduction in the development of Type 2 diabetes for those who engage in a physically active lifestyle. Here are a few tips to help you get active, and put your health in your hands!*

Cardio: Cardiovascular exercise enhances our bodies’ ability to

uptake blood glucose by our working muscles and helps regulate insulin levels. According the American College of Sports Medicine, to obtain the health benefits associated with cardiovascular exercise, you should maintain a workout of moderate to vigorous intensity for 20 to 60 minutes, working between 65 to 85 percent of your maximum heart rate. An easy way to check if you’re on pace is the talk test. If you’re experiencing difficulty getting the words out between breaths then you’re doing it right!

Strength training: Active muscle demands glucose, so the

more muscle we have, the more glucose is being used to fuel our bodies and not circulating out in our bloodstream. Active muscle also keeps our metabolism going and burns more calories while at rest. The best way to build muscle mass is to engage in a full body strength training regimen. Give your muscles adequate repair by including a rest day!

Combine your workouts: To get the most out of every

workout, you should always make sure to combine cardio, strength and flexibility. This maximizes calorie burn and works all of the necessary elements for improving health while reducing the risk of injury. It is recommended that you include an eight to 12 minute warm up, 20 to 60 minutes of strength training and 20 to 60 minutes of cardio. Always make sure to conclude your workout with a five to 10 minute cool down with stretches lasting 15 to 60 seconds.

Keep it up!: Chronic or consistent exercise over long periods of

journey, not a destination, and the best way to solidify those healthy changes is to make physical activity a part of your everyday life.

Know your risk!: People who are 45 years of age or older,

have a BMI (body mass index) greater than or equal to 25 kg/m2, are physically inactive, have a first degree relative (mother, father, sister, brother) with diabetes, or who are of African American, Latino, Native American, Asian American or Pacific Islander decent are at higher risk for developing diabetes. While you can’t change some of these risk factors, engaging in physical activity and lowering your BMI are two very important and entirely controllable factors that can greatly reduce your risk! *The intensity and duration of your exercise session will vary depending upon by your current fitness level and medical condition, so make sure to consult your physician and local certified health and fitness professional to find the exercise program that works best for you!

time produces the greatest benefits. Remember exercise is a
