Your knowledge is truly helping to make our world a better place. Alpha Gamma Deltas are inspiring young women to follow their dreams, no matter the boundaries!

A
s summer months wrap up and blend into fall, we too transition our focus to our vision and goals for the coming year, expanding our learning and reaching to be our best. Our Alpha Gamma Delta Founders experienced these same seasonal changes and underscored the importance of growth through learning by beginning our Purpose with words that capture that spirit. “To gain understanding that wisdom may be vouchsafed to me,” is such a powerful statement. From Bid Day to Rededication Service and throughout alumnae life, our members strive to remain dedicated to academic success, personal growth and professional achievement. It’s important that our sisterhood gains strength and ambition from that line of our Purpose to succeed academically, as well as personally and professionally. For those dedicated and lucky enough to have achieved their dream jobs, continual learning is just as important. Learning is a lifelong journey and should never have an expiration date! When I first saw the call-out seeking sisters to share their experiences in STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) careers, I wasn’t surprised to learn that we received over 400 responses through Alpha Gamma Delta’s social media channels! Sisters working towards degrees in chemistry, aerospace, engineering and computer science were happy to share their stories; from working in the office of the United States Secretary of Defense, to occupations at Mars, Inc. and NASA, our sisters are
impacting our world in so many amazing ways. We are delighted to spotlight several of these sisters in the feature article for this issue of the Quarterly. The dedication and thirst for knowledge required to be successful in a STEM career illustrate how Alpha Gams are living our Purpose throughout their lifetimes. As you refocus this season on your academic, professional or personal growth, remember the wealth of resources you have available to you through your international sisterhood! Alpha Gamma Delta members span the globe in an array of careers and concentrations of study that are invaluable. Seek out inspiration, support and guidance from your fellow sisters to continually grow and gain understanding. Just as our Founders intended, Alpha Gamma Delta sisters continue to inspire women to follow their dreams, to seek out new learning opportunities and to celebrate their knowledge, no matter the boundaries. I challenge each of you to strive for excellence in expanding your knowledge and seeking to understand the world around you. It is my wish that each Alpha Gamma Delta sister has a remarkable journey! Pearl Sisters
Fall 2015 and spring 2016 are going to be exciting and busy times for Alpha Gamma Delta! The Fraternity will be extending on three campuses: Tufts University, Kansas State University and California Polytechnic State University. With all these colonizations, we will need more Pearl Sisters! Haven’t heard of the Pearl Sister program before? Pearl Sisters are alumnae members of the Fraternity who serve as role models and mentors for new members at our colonies. It lasts the eight weeks of the new member period, but can carry over into the first semester of the colony’s establishment. Pearl Sisters communicate with their new members through social media, email, text, phone and mail. It doesn’t matter where a Pearl Sister lives with regard to the colony, so all alumnae are welcome to apply! If you have any questions about the program, please email volunteer@alphagammadelta.org. Or, you can sign up here.

With recruitment right around the corner, you may be thinking, “How do I complete a Rec?” It’s simple! Here are a few quick instructions to get you started: 1. Go to alphagammadelta.org and click on the “Complete a new Rec!” button from the home page of our website. 2. Click on “Recruitment Recommendation” to download the form. (Or download here.) A list of the most recent recruitment dates can also be found there. 3. Once finished, the Rec should be submitted to the chapter’s Membership Coordinator by mail. Feel free to attach photos and transcripts if available! To find a list of chapter mailing addresses, go back to alphagammadelta.org and click on “Complete a new Rec!” again. There, you will find a link to the list of addresses. (Or download here.) Cultivate. Cherish. Perfect.
F
rom Thursday, June 18, to Saturday, June 20, Alpha Gamma Delta hosted The Leadership Conference at the JW Marriott in Indianapolis, Indiana. Held biennially in off-Convention years, The Leadership Conference is an opportunity for Chapter Advisors and chapter officers to learn about specific programming offered by the Fraternity. This year’s conference unveiled a new approach for Membership Selection and explored the foundation for both recruiting and retaining the highest quality sisters. This included cherishing our friendships, cultivating relationships with our sisters and potential new members and learning how to perfect and polish our recruitment skills. TLC fun started on Thursday night with the Connection Kick-off Event. Sisters mingled over multiple candy buffets, stepped into photo booths with Alpha Gam props and played life-sized Jenga. T
hese science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) occupational stereotypes are often used in our society today. Think back to when women primarily stayed at home and took care of the house, rather than going to college. Back then, it may have seemed natural for men to outnumber women in STEM career fields, but as time and society have
progressed, the number of women in these fields has not increased proportionately. 12 quarterly | summer 2015
So what is STEM, exactly? STEM is an acronym for science, technology, engineering and math. It is a term you hear often when talking about education and curriculum choices in school. Rather than teaching the four different subjects separately, STEM integrates them into a connected learning model based on real-world applications. Software developer, mechanical engineer, computer programmer and architect are all considered STEM careers. With STEM being the fastest growing major in the United States, shooting up by nearly 95 percent1, women still remain underrepresented in the science and engineering workforce, holding less than 25 percent of STEM jobs.2 STEM is quite literally the future, and that is why it is so important. Think about it. Science is all around us. Science is the land, the sea, the nature around us, the food we eat and the animals who are our companions. Technology sparked the creation of the radio, telephone, television and internet. Who knows what is possible for technology in the future? Engineers design our roadways, bridges, buildings and even tackle global warming and energy saving tactics. Think of how many buildings and homes use solar panels for power! We use mathematics every day – we go to the bank, balance our budgets for family expenses, vacations and more! Without math, we couldn’t successfully get through our day. So, you see, STEM is everywhere! We live in a very technological world, and as
advancements are made in the field, it will be imperative that women are present in the industry. Women can bring a unique perspective to research, service and product developments in STEM. We are fundamentally different than our male counterparts, and we bring a variety of unique experiences with our input. Encouraging young women to pursue STEM careers is one way to ensure that our voices are heard as new services and products are developed. Alpha Gamma Delta’s Purpose encourages members, young and old, to reach above and beyond their dreams. But before young women receive a support system in college, more must be done at an earlier age to interest young girls in STEM careers. Luckily there are organizations like Project Lead the Way (PLTW) that can be introduced to young women early in their education. PLTW is a perfect example of an organization that is leading the way in exposing young women to STEM education as early as elementary school. PLTW is a STEM education provider who writes curriculum and teacher professional development programs for more than 6,500 schools around the country. They work with elementary, middle and high schools, colleges and universities to help students develop the skills they need to succeed in the STEM world. “PLTW classrooms could be mistaken for complete chaos,
but in reality, it is organized chaos,” said Jennifer Cahill, PLTW Senior Director of Media and Public Relations. “Our students could be working on a computer with 3-D modeling software to design a house, while another student may be researching the typical size of a desk to put in that house. The experience is engaging and hands on. In PLTW programs, the teachers are facilitators.” PLTW believes it is critical that young women should be engaged in STEM at an early age. There are studies that show students are deciding as early as second and third grade whether they are good at science and math. Getting young women excited about STEM at an early age will help them consider more career options in the future. PLTW wants to inspire young women to think they can pursue any career they want to, regardless of the gender stereotypes.
race, but gender,” Jennifer said. “It’s very critical that we break down the stereotypes and the micro messages that tell young women there are male- dominant professions, and that’s just the way it’s supposed to be. Young women need to understand they can do anything they want to do, they are talented in math and science, and they should go after their dreams.” Even though women aren’t greatly represented in the STEM world, there are plenty of organizations that are committed to promoting women in STEM. Alpha Gamma Delta members are often inspired by these organizations, other sisters and their peers to pursue a STEM degree in college. Having Alpha Gam as a support system helps them succeed and be leaders on campus and role models for other women pursing STEM degrees.
“It is important to have women at the table when you are designing a product to have the diversity of opinion, not just with ethnicity and 13

We received so many responses from our STEM call-out on social media that we were blown away! It is empowering to see so many women who resonate with “to gain understanding that wisdom may be vouchsafed to me.” Alpha Gams are leading the way in STEM majors as well as careers. Let’s meet just a few Alpha Gams women who are breaking down barriers and helping STEM to become a top career choice for future sisters. ASHLEY LAY, EPSILON–UNIVERSITY OF KENTUCKY
Ashley graduated with a degree in chemical engineering and is currently a Ph.D. student in pharmaceutical studies at the University of Kentucky College of Pharmacy. WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO ENTER A STEM MAJOR AND FURTHER YOUR EDUCATION? I’ve always been interested in science. In high school, I was drawn to the health science field, because it impacted so many lives in a positive way. I was fortunate to be accepted into the biopharmaceutical engineering program at the University of Kentucky, and at the same time, I was able to take classes from the College of Pharmacy. I am currently finishing my first year in the pharmaceutical science Ph.D. program at UK College of Pharmacy.
JORDAN GARTH, GAMMA PHI–GEORGIA INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY
Jordan is a collegiate member, majoring in biomedical engineering with a focus in electrical engineering and industrial design. HOW HAVE YOUR ALPHA GAMMA DELTA SISTERS HELPED YOU THROUGH YOUR COLLEGE CAREER? My sisters have meant the absolute world to me throughout my college career. I couldn't think of a better support system. I look up to these women. Someone is doing something great every day in my chapter, and I feel like my sisters do their best to highlight that in each other.
quarterly | summer 2015
Right now, my research is focused on determining the properties of a drug formulation that lead to the highest quality product. I have really enjoyed the course work and research! HOW DID YOU GET INVOLVED IN ORGANIZATIONS LIKE GEMS (GIRLS ENJOYING MATH AND SCIENCE)? HOW HAVE YOU GROWN AND LEARNED FROM THE EXPERIENCE? I got involved with GEMS through a professor helping at a GEMS event. As a girl, I loved going to museums or any activity that allowed me to learn about science. I thought this would be a fun opportunity to impact young girls and teach them about engineering principles. Finding ways to make science fun is rewarding, especially when you get to answer questions from young girls about STEM.
When I joined Alpha Gamma Delta, I was lacking confidence in myself and my abilities. The pressure of being in a maledominated field made me feel like I was in the background. But my sisters saw the potential in me and helped me become the woman, sister and engineer that I am today. WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR FAVORITE STEM EXPERIENCE THROUGH YOUR COLLEGE CAREER? My favorite experience so far has been interning at Under Armour! At Under Armour, I’m currently working on product development and design within connected fitness. My skills as a biomedical engineering student align well with that of connected fitness because it's all about improving athletics by understanding what motion an athlete is performing that either strengthens or weakens their overall performance. Being at Under Armour makes me feel like all my experiences and hard work have really mattered. Between the study sessions, internships, being involved in student organizations, long hours in the lab and trying to find a balance, I found a career path that is so fulfilling. I couldn't ask for anything more; the joy of having your dreams come true is indescribable.
CARRIE RAU, ZETA ZETA NU–ALMA COLLEGE
Carrie just finished a Doctor of Jurisprudence degree at Indiana University Robert H. McKinney School of Law in Indianapolis and currently works as a forensic scientist with the Indiana State Police. DO YOU EXPERIENCE HARDSHIPS IN YOUR CAREER BECAUSE OF GENDER STEREOTYPES? IF SO, HOW DO YOU PROVE PEOPLE WRONG? In my previous jobs, where women were in the minority, my experiences were very different. For instance, when I worked in lab safety, I was a part of a three person team. We rotated the responsibility of being lead inspector, and even when I was the lead, I found that principal investigators often overlooked me in favor of interacting with one of the men on my team. I worried that I’d made the wrong decision going into a STEM field. The first thing I had to do was realize that it wasn’t ME or my ideas that were the problem. Recognizing the pattern (that all ideas coming from women were dismissed quickly by those particular people) and gaining confidence in myself helped immensely. I had to learn to seek out people when I heard there might be an opportunity to work on a project and put myself on their radar. This is a great thing to do in any field, regardless of gender, but I think as a woman in a STEM field, it is especially important. You want to build your mentor and support network, but you are still your own best advocate.
MARLEA GWINN, GAMMA BETA–FLORIDA STATE UNIVERSITY
Marlea currently works as a Senior Integration Consultant at Walt Disney Parks and Resorts WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO ENTER A STEM CAREER? Curiosity. I’m really curious, and I like to solve problems. When I was a sophomore in college, I started working in a psychology lab as a research assistant. We researched people’s relationships, such as what predicts a longer relationship duration and what predicts break-ups. I loved the statistics behind the findings, so my professor recommended me for some graduate courses in statistics. I completed an honor’s thesis and started a Ph.D. program in psychology. After a year, I dropped out of the Ph.D. program after a year, because I realized my passion was more in statistics and solving problems than it was any theoretical field. Imagine telling your parents you’re dropping out of a fully-funded Ph.D. program! A lot of people thought I was crazy—I left a Ph.D. program only to work part-time at Banana Republic to help pay for master’s degree level coursework in statistics and data mining. Despite what anyone thought, I was determined. Even when I started working in retail to help pay for school, I was confident in my decision. Flash forward three years, and I’ve been promoted twice. I love my job and wouldn’t change a thing.
WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO WOMEN PURSUING STEM MAJORS AND CAREERS? I wish I could say you’re going to have an easier time than I did 15 or 20 years ago, when I was just starting, but I just don’t think we’re there yet. My best advice is to work on building yourself up. Most people out there aren’t going to pigeonhole you based on gender; use those people. When you need a confidence boost, go to one of your cheerleaders. WHAT DO YOU LIKE MOST ABOUT OUR JOB? There is so much I love about my job. As cliche as it might sound, I love feeling like I’m making a difference. As a scientist in research and development, I struggled with the concept that I could work on a project for years, and ultimately the project could be cancelled without ever resulting in a product. In forensic science, that’s not the case. I’ve sent out reports that immediately removed someone from a list of suspects. I’ve worked on cases that resulted in DNA database hits identifying the previously unknown perpetrator of some pretty serious crimes. Both of those things have made a HUGE difference in someone’s life.
TELL ME MORE ABOUT YOUR JOB. WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE PART? I am an internal consultant, which means I get to work with various lines of business within Disney to create analytical tools or improve existing analytic processes. I work with a lot of numerical data and my main areas of focus thus far have been mostly resorts and merchandise (yes, princess costumes!). My role is essentially a hybrid of technology and science. I do a lot of querying data and creating solutions, but I also work on forecasting and other types of models. My title, “Integration Consultant,” really just represents that I integrate myself with other areas (technology, decision science, business units) to create analytical solutions. I’ve had the opportunity to work with a lot of fun products. I am also surrounded by a lot of really intelligent and fun colleagues, which makes things a lot more enjoyable.

Women @ NASA is a great resource for young women who may be interested in science and space. The website includes 64 videos and essays from women who greatly contributed to NASA’s mission and success. The website also brings dreams to life—the mentoring program at NASA, Change the World through STEM, connects NASA employees with middle school students through Skype and Google Chat. What an exciting experience!
Girls Who Code is a national nonprofit organization that works to close the gender gap in STEM careers. They work with others to educate and inspire young women to pursue opportunities in computer and technology careers. Girls Who Code also offers an opportunity for young women interested in technology to attend a Summer Immersion Program. There, participants spend seven weeks engrossed in intensive instruction, learning about robotics, web design and mobile development with the industry’s top female entrepreneurs and engineers. In result of this program, young women demonstrated confidence in pursuing computing in the future. They also gained wonderful mentors who will provide support as they continue to flourish in STEM.
Engineer Girl is a bright and interactive website resource that easily breaks down the thought process for a young woman thinking about entering the engineering field. The website introduces engineers, tells their stories and even gives users an option to “Ask an Engineer!” It also provides many fun resources to explain engineering in depth, while keeping the user’s attention. Lastly, it shows viewers how to prepare themselves to worktowards an engineering degree with competitions and contests, clubs and programs, quizzes, polls and even scholarships!
Math Doesn’t Suck teaches girls exactly what you might think, math doesn’t suck! Danica McKellar, best known for her roles on Wonder Years and West Wing, is an advocate for math education and the creator and author of the website and book, “Math Doesn’t Suck.” She graduated summa cum laude from UCLA with a degree in mathematics and a strong passion for showing young women that math can be fun. She has used her career as an actress to show girls that smart is beautiful! These are just a few organizations and resources that are making a difference in changing the way young women view careers in STEM and challenging society’s stereotypes that STEM professions are male-dominated. By making STEM careers more attractive and more common for women, we can open opportunities for Alpha Gams to inspire other women and impact the world.
We had such an overwhelming amount of responses for the STEM call out. Here are just a few of the other amazing things Alpha Gamma Delta sisters are doing!

I Am Enough
A COLLEGIAN’S CALL TO ACTION f self-confidence is a key ingredient to success, it may be one of the hardest to maintain. Keeping composure while waiting for a call back or staying positive while searching for a job are unsettling realities that can leave us feeling vulnerable, inadequate and immobile. It is easy to shy away from these uncomfortable situations, but Sara Eckhard, Alpha-Syracuse University, and the women in her chapter are embracing them—and helping others do the same.
20 quarterly | summer 2015
Sara, who will begin her senior year this fall, started the “I Am Enough” movement in an effort to promote female selfempowerment and self-acceptance. What began as an inspirational phrase scribbled on a poster board is now part of a campaign catching on at colleges and universities across the nation. She hopes her simple concept will inspire women around the world to reject unrealistic expectations of beauty or success and realize their worth.
“We can be our own worst critics,” Sara said. “Our entire lives, we are going to have outside messages telling us that we aren’t good enough. Why should we be hating on ourselves? We need to stand up and be our own best friend.” Sara was compelled to lead a call-to-action after watching a TED Talk by author and social researcher, Brene Brown. She was struck by something Brown said during the talk: “I am imperfect, and I am enough.” “This was the first time that I realized my idea of ‘bettering myself’ and trying to ‘achieve my full potential’ is actually a breeding ground for low self-esteem and not feeling adequate,” Sara said. “The ‘I Am Enough’ slogan helps us make peace with our imperfections.” Sara turned to her sisters for help getting started. She asked them to snap a photo with the slogan written on their hands, arms or poster board. These photos became the basis for the “I Am Enough” movement. The concept gained further momentum with an on-campus campaign during “Empowered Greek Women Week,” held last February. Alpha Chapter sisters invited the student body to create their own sign adorned with messages of self-love and self-empowerment, which were then posted to the “I Am Enough - Syracuse University” Facebook page. The concept caught quickly. By the week’s end, nearly 800 people—male and female—had joined the social media effort,
This was the first time that I realized my idea of ‘bettering myself’ and trying to ‘achieve my full potential’ is actually a breeding ground for low self-esteem and not feeling adequate. and it didn’t stop there. A month later, Wayne University in Detroit, Michigan, held its own self-empowerment week inspired by Sara’s effort. Other Greek chapters and organizations across the country are following suit. Sara, overwhelmed by the enthusiastic response, looks forward to keeping the momentum going. She and her chapter sisters are working on a second self-empowerment event this fall, and Sara is teaming up with Planned Parenthood and other local organizations to help expand the program to other college campuses and beyond. She is also working to create stickers and other materials to help give the “I Am Enough” movement permanence beyond a week-long event. “I expected the support of my sisters in the Alpha Chapter, but getting support from Alpha Gams across the country is unreal,” she said. “It’s great to feel like I’m making an impact on others.” Want to get involved, too? Giving Back
ou would think traveling to another country wouldn’t be so difficult for an independent woman from Oklahoma. However, nothing is ever as easy as it seems,” said Karla Taylor Brooks, Epsilon Xi-East Central University, reflecting back on her recent volunteer mission to the Ivory
Coast in West Africa with the 1040 Initiative. Karla, fearful and hesitant to travel to a part of the world where English and American culture are unknown, now looks back on overcoming her fears with a sense of pride.
22 quarterly | summer 2015
The 1040 Initiative (1040i) is “redefining what is possible for the African people who live in a world that seems impossible.” Its mission is to provide education, healthcare and clean water to the communities of African people living in the Ivory Coast.
As a non-profit, 1040i relies not only on donations, but on people like Karla who are willing to donate their time to help make 1040i initiatives a reality. Karla has since returned from her volunteer mission, but she still continues to work with 1040i. In the past, she has worked with her family to collect soccer balls and books for the children, provided water filters and helped to build personal emergency transport carts for those patients on the compound who are unable to walk. When Karla learned that UpsilonUniversity of Oklahoma’s chapter house was undergoing renovations after a fire, she asked if the Fraternity Housing Corporation (FHC) would be willing to donate any non-damaged furniture to 1040i. The FHC was excited to donate the beds, dressers and desks, so Karla and her family transported the furniture to the orphanages and schools in West Africa. “I visited the orphanage this past February, and I was able to see the joy on the children’s faces when they were shown their own beds. Most of these children have never had a bed, they have always just slept on the dirt floor, “she said.
“My true milestone was being able to conquer my fear of traveling to another part of the world where English and American culture are unknown,” she said. “When my husband started going, the country was in civil war, and the volunteers had to be escorted by the United Nations to get to the remote villages where they serve. My children went as a new government was voted into office. This past year, we thought we may not make the trip due to the Ebola scare.”
I visited the orphanage this past February, and I was able to see the joy on the children’s faces when they were shown their own beds. Most of these children have never had a bed, they have always just slept on the dirt floor.
Karla first became involved with 1040i after both her husband and two children spent time volunteering with the group. For the past 10 years, her husband has been traveling with 1040i as an oral and maxillofacial surgeon. Her children joined their father on his volunteer trips to the Ivory Coast during their senior year in high school. Between her growing passion for the project and the support of her family, Karla felt inspired to face her fears, so she began traveling with 1040i to volunteer firsthand.
Despite her fears and hesitation, Karla made her first trip to West Africa in February 2015. During her time abroad, she spent her days working with the children in the compound. Her mornings were occupied with volunteering in a school. Her afternoons were filled with a variety of different tasks, including aiding patients post-surgery, organizing supply rooms, cooking for fellow volunteers and visiting nearby villages. Currently, Karla is working on 1040i’s Back to School Initiative. With the help of the Norman Alumnae Chapter in Oklahoma, she is working to fill 10,000 backpacks with the necessary school supplies for those children in Ivory Coast.
“These backpacks are helping children gain an education,” Karla said. “Providing simple school supplies to the children is a very big deal; the education they receive has the ability to drastically improve the future lives of the children and their families. They have never had access to these resources, so the paper, pencils and backpacks are treasured by them.” If you are interested in helping with the Back to School Initiative, you can learn more at 1040i.org.

The San Francisco Bay Area Alumnae Chapter started out 2015 with lots of fun, sun and sisterhood. In February, we ventured over the Golden Gate Bridge to beautiful Sonoma Valley, for a wine tasting tour at three local wineries. The weather was amazing, so we able to enjoy a lovely, sunny, alfresco picnic at Sebastiani Vineyards. In April, we attended a fabulous International Reunion Day at the newly-built Sonoma State Student Center with 250 of our northern California sisters coming from as far as Silicon Valley and Chico. We loved spending time with the wonderful women of Delta Pi–San Francisco State University; we cheered them on during their annual Lip Sync philanthropy event, joined them at Initiation to welcome our newest sisters and visited with them at the annual Senior Tea and Rededication Service. Our busy spring wrapped up with an Alumnae Meet and Greet to welcome newly graduated sisters and chat with alumnae interested in officer and advisor roles for the upcoming year. We look forward to more events this fall! -Jessica Overbeck

Meet Jayde
J
ayde Sheeley, Zeta-Ohio University, boldly defies all stereotypes. Destroying preconceived notions of sorority women—and, more generally, all women. Jayde is a mixed martial arts fighter. HOW DID YOU GET INVOLVED IN MIXED MARTIAL ARTS? I was introduced to mixed martial arts (MMA) by my father, who is an instructor and currently trains Ultimate Fighting Championship fighters around the world. I began practicing MMA at the age of seven and took part in exhibition fights as a teenager. When I turned 18, I was eligible to participate in cage fights and began looking for my first event. This turned out to be easier said than done: MMA is primarily a male-dominated sport and finding opportunities for amateur female fighters can be frustratingly difficult. ONCE YOU FOUND AN OPPORTUNITY, WHAT HAPPENED? I participated in my first fight in November 2013. I won! I also won my second fight in January 2014. On the tail of those victories, I planned to enter another fight in the summer of 2014. Unfortunately, my plans changed that May when I broke my hand during practice. The hand injury not only interfered with my training schedule, but it also prevented me from continuing with the Ohio University Army ROTC program. This was particularly devastating to me, because I had hoped to attend Army Officer Candidate School in the future. I really credit my good support system, including my Alpha Gam sisters, with helping me through that difficult time. HOW DO YOU BALANCE DAY-TO-DAY LIFE? Being an MMA fighter is a demanding gig. I have to log hours of training while balancing schoolwork, ROTC responsibilities, a new job and Alpha Gamma Delta. Additionally, being in top physical form for fights requires a strict diet. My sisters hide junk food to help keep me on track! WHAT DOES THE FUTURE HOLD? I have recovered from my hand injury and fought for the first time post-injury in January 2015, but I plan to hold off on any further fights until after graduation. My goal is to become a professional MMA fighter and make that my full-time career!

pearls of wisdom
KNOW HOW TO
Rediscover Your Passion
The Alpha Gamma Delta Communications Team attended the Fraternity Communications Association Annual Conference earlier this summer and was extremely inspired by the words of Kevin Wanzer. Kevin Wanzer is a professional speaker, but not just any speaker—he’s not what you think. His program empowers his audience, one laugh at a time. He spends his days traveling to countless college campuses sharing his rip-roaring comedic antics and spreading his message on love, laughter and leadership. Here, he shares how following your passion can help you inspire others and impact the world:
I
find myself blessed to visit and speak to audiences across the United States and beyond, using comedy to provoke thought, to promote kindness and to celebrate the diversity of others. I enjoy a passionately satisfying career finding the funny that surrounds us in life and mixing it all into a message that makes people smile, laugh and feel good about who they are and their part in their family, school, career or community. My favorite part of what I do is helping people rediscover and reconnect to their passions. Notice, I did not say discover their passions, but rediscover. I personally believe there are things we are born to love. Careers we are born to follow. Lives we are born to live passionately. Seeking to plug into your passion? Here are some things to consider: 1
What are your life double-take moments? What are some images, professions, words or ideas that when you read about them or hear them mentioned in the media you just have to double back to learn more?
2
If you could have your own version of “Freaky Friday” and swap lives with anyone, who would that be? Who is someone whose life you would like to experience?
46 quarterly | summer 2015
3
As a very young child, what did you enjoy doing? What did you pretend, read about, want to know more about and dream about?
4
If you knew you were absolutely guaranteed to succeed— that failure was not a possibility—what would you choose to do?
5
If you were independently wealthy, so you didn’t need to earn a living from your work, how would you spend your days?
When you’re in your passion, you’re fueled and you’re energized. You’re the best you, the real you. Celebrate it. Be kind to the people you have the privilege of encountering each day. Kindness and validation, wherever you offer it, always make a difference. Your smile may be the sign that causes someone’s own inner voice to whisper, “This is what you were meant to do.”

a look back

A Founder’s Destiny
ounder Emily Helen Butterfield was a trailblazer into the very early world of science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM). Her work as an architect and artist inspired other women to pursue their dreams, no matter the gender stereotype. Emily had a vivid and vibrant personality, and she was a dreamer. Born in Detroit, Michigan, her parents had impressive artistic abilities, and her father, Wells D. Butterfield, was a well-known architect.
Before entering college, Emily studied with her father in the art of classification of armorial bearings and the tracing of genealogies. Having decided to follow in her father’s profession, she enrolled in architecture courses at Syracuse University in 1903. 48 quarterly | summer 2015
During her freshman year, Emily even sold some of her artwork. In the spring of 1906, she completed the Fraternity’s Coat of Arms. She also designed Alpha Gam’s pledge pin and the Armorial Bearings for several fraternities. After graduation, Emily continued to serve the Fraternity in a variety of roles, including as the architect for the Alpha Gamma Delta Summer Camp lodge, as well as the Alpha-Syracuse University and Chi-Michigan State University chapter houses. Emily’s work is still a treasured part of Alpha Gamma Delta’s history, and much of her work hangs on the walls of International Headquarters today, including the original blue prints for the Alpha chapter house! Her legacy will live on forever through her architecture and artwork.
