Alpha Hong Kong Annual Report 2022

Dear partners,

2022 has been an eventful year for Hong Kong as well as for Alpha. We are glad to see that we are coming to an end on COVID restrictions, and life can soon return to normal.

Thanks to your great support, our brandnew video series, the Alpha Cantonese Teen Series ( ACTS ) , completed production in February 2022. We see significant fruits with its launch and more than 10,000 young people have already gone through the course. We expect ACTS to reach the youth far and wide, as we are seeing significant uptake in Cantonese-speaking communities around the world as well as with the Catholic Church, who has worked closely with us throughout the production of ACTS.

Another great regional development in 2022 was the completion of the Chinese Alpha Film Series ( CAFS ) . Produced in Mandarin, this will be critical in bringing the Gospel to the Mandarin-speaking Chinese community in Hong Kong for years to come.

We are very excited about the future. Nicky and Pippa Gumbel will now be serving Alpha full-time. We would like to invite you to join our global vision to make the Gospel available to everyone on the planet by 2033. Specifically, our vision is to reach 100 million people worldwide through Alpha in the next ten years. We are honoured to partner with you in this vision, which we believe will be achievable with the Lord's help and your support. Thank you for standing with us for this vision. Dear friends,

I still remember feeling nervously excited as I stepped into Alpha following a long career in investment banking. Today, I am amazed and humbled to witness how God did immeasurably more than I could ask or imagine over the past two years. Thank you for journeying with Alpha and me personally during this time.

2022 was a record year for Alpha Hong Kong, with 22,776 people participating in Alpha, accounting for an impressive 89% growth from the previous year. In particular, there was a staggering 156% growth in youth hearing the Gospel through Alpha. The launch of our new video series –Alpha Cantonese Teen Series ( ACTS ) – was a key catalyst. Thanks to your support, ACTS has a widespread and ongoing Gospel influence on our city's youth, giving them hope for the future, a place where they can be heard, and a home-like community.

During this time, I have seen how countless churches have been mobilised to reach the lost through Alpha; I have seen how cultural barriers have been broken for youth to hear the Good News; I have seen how lives have been transformed and new communities being formed.

Over the past two years, it has been a journey of growth and learning for me. One of the most important things I have learnt is this:

Listening is one of the loudest forms of love; and Alpha creates space for people to demonstrate love through listening.

In this day and age, everyone wants to have a voice, but who is listening? Alpha encourages a culture of listening that is so necessary yet so lacking. I am thrilled to see churches and schools making space to listen to young people through Alpha. Listening has the ability to foster understanding and bring healing like nothing else, because:

Love listens. And listening shows love.

None of this can be realised without your amazing support. Once again, I am incredibly grateful for your partnership. Thank you for the difference you are making for such a time as this.

猶記得當我離開工作多年的投資銀 行 ， 轉到香港啟發擔任總幹事時 ， 那份 既興奮又戰兢的感覺 ， 至今仍歷歷在目。

今天 ， 我懷著謙卑又感恩的心情 ， 見證了神 在過去兩年中所做的一切 ， 實在已遠遠超越 我的所求所想。感謝您在這段時間與啟發和 我並肩同行。

2022 年是香港啟發刷新紀錄的一年 ， 共有

在這段時間 ， 我看到了數不盡的教會 ， 透過 啟發去動員弟兄姊妹 ，同心得著失喪的人群； 我看到那些攔阻年輕人認識福音的文化障礙 被一一打破；同時亦見證了很多人的生命被 轉化 ， 更多新的屬靈群體被建立。

過去的兩年 ， 對我來說是一段成長和學習的 旅程 ， 其中一項最重要的功課 ， 是學習到聆 聽的重要：

聆聽是最能彰顯愛的其中一個途徑。而啟發正 正為人們創造空間，讓他們通過聆聽來表達愛。

在聆聽呢？啟發鼓勵聆聽文化 ， 這文化十分

What is Alpha?

Alpha is an opportunity to explore life's big questions together in a relaxed and friendly environment.

Alpha is typically run over 11 weeks, with each talk looking at a different question around faith that is designed to create conversation.

Alpha is run all around the globe, online and in person. It is free and everyone is welcome.

Window of Opportunity for Hong Kong Immigrants in the UK 移英港人的福音機遇

The recent wave of immigrants from Hong Kong to the UK has reached a historic high. Interestingly, an overwhelming 63% of non-Christians from Hong Kong demonstrated an interest in exploring faith, compared to 41% Mainland Chinese and 19% British-born Chinese, according to a recent survey conducted by London School of Theology. Alpha Hong Kong seized this opportunity and immediately hosted a series of vision sharing sessions, to encourage and equip UK churches to actively evangelise with Hong Kong immigrants. As a result, since 2020, almost a quarter of the courses registered in Alpha Hong Kong are run overseas. We are thankful that our Alpha ministry is now able to extend beyond Hong Kong, to connect and bless the global Chinese community.

Pioneer Elderly Alpha to bring joy and energy to the community

長者啟發為社區帶來喜樂和活力

With population ageing becoming more prevalent, there is a pressing need for churches to focus on elderly ministry. In order to help churches effectively share the Gospel with the elderly, we developed a set of resources and organised vision sharing sessions to mobilise and equip churches in their elderly ministry. In particular, we use interactive games to create a more engaging Alpha experience for the elderly. We are glad to work alongside churches to spread the love and joy of Jesus in the elderly community.

I initially thought Alpha was just an ordinary gathering, but it went way beyond my imagination. Many newcomers stayed behind and joined our church fellowship after Alpha. Alpha enabled me to see a breakthrough in evangelism!

Strategic collaborations with church denominations 宗派策略性合作關係

We are very thankful that major denominations in Hong Kong have started strategic denominational collaborations with Alpha in 2022. This includes the Anglican Church, the Methodist Church, the Chinese Christian Church, the Baptist Church, the Lutheran Church, the Free Methodist Church, etc. We connected with different local churches across Hong Kong through vision sharing sessions and training. We strive to not only provide support to churches' Alpha ministry, but also to help local churches reimagine their evangelistic strategy.

我們十分感恩香港的主要宗派 ， 包括聖公會、循道衛理聯 合教會、中華基督教會、浸聯會、信義會、循理會等 ， 在 2022 年間與啟發開展宗派策略性合作的關係。我們透過推 動不同的事工分享會和培訓 ， 連繫遍及港九新界的多間教 會 ， 不單幫助宗派和堂會開展啟發事工 ， 更加協助他們發展 合適的傳福音策略。

Ground-breaking partnership with the Catholic Church in evangelising to the youth

天主教與啟發同心推動青少年工作

In 2022, we continue to work closely with the Catholic Church to promote and provide training for the Alpha Cantonese Teen Series ( ACTS ) . As a result, over 460 participants have experienced Alpha in Catholic parishes and schools. We saw students encountering the love of Jesus and living out biblical truth in their daily lives. We are most grateful for the full support from Most Reverend Joseph Ha Chi-Shing, OFM, Auxiliary Bishop, Catholic Diocese of Hong Kong. We believe our collaboration with the Catholic Church displays a beautiful picture of unity in Christ in spreading the Gospel to the next generation.

2022 年啟發繼續與香港天主教區同心同行 ， 策動《啟發少 青系列》 ( ACTS ) 的推廣及培訓工作。我們十分感恩得到天 主教香港教區夏志誠輔理主教的全力支持 ， 超過 460 個學 生於堂區和天主教屬校參與 ACTS ， 體驗和經歷基督的愛 ， 並於日常生活中實踐真理。我們相信與天主教區的合作是展 現基督裏合一的美好見證。

The Gospel is unchanging, but ways to spread the Good News must keep changing to adapt to a modern audience. I commend Alpha for sharing the Gospel with youth in ways that are both innovative and engaging, yet also simple and effective. Come and see!

The first of its kind, it consists of 13 talks with a relatable and engaging style. We believe ACTS is a powerful tool for churches and schools to reach Hong Kong's youth.

Reconnecting churches with youth

The social unrest and pandemic lockdown have led to a huge exodus of youth from the Church. We are thankful that ACTS offers an engaging and culturally relevant tool for churches to urgently reconnect with the rising generation. Through ACTS, young people have a space to be heard, to have fun and to make friends. The major denominations in Hong Kong - Baptist, Methodist, Sheng Kung Hui, and HKCCCC - have all mobilised their churches to run ACTS.

Reviving evangelism in schools

ACTS has provided a much needed tool to support teachers in both religious studies classes or as extra-curricular activities. The readilyavailable videos with accompanying curriculum guidelines make it very convenient for teachers to run ACTS. With 50% of the schools in Hong Kong having a Christian background ( Protestant or Catholic ) , we believe this is only the beginning of how God will use ACTS in the lives of students.

ACTS 為老師提供宗教課和課外活動適切的工具 ， 簡 單易用的影片和課程指南 ， 以便教師輕鬆開辦。由於 香港一半的學校屬於基督教或天主教背景 ， 我們深信 並期待上帝繼續透過 ACTS 祝福學生的生命。

Alpha is a safe and free platform. No one will judge you nor force any teachings upon you. Alpha allows young people to freely share their difficulties in life and encounter God.

I was once distant from God but through workplace Alpha, I was able to renew my faith and encounter Him. After re-committing my life to Christ through Alpha, I also shared my faith with my sister and mother. I am thrilled that both of them committed their lives to Jesus. I am extremely thankful that Alpha allows not only me, but also my family to come to know the Lord.

Nurturing leaders to extend workplace missions movement

The fifth wave has impacted people in Hong Kong in unprecedented ways. We hope to bring a message of hope to the marketplace. It is our honour to invite four key leaders in our city ( Mr Antony Leung, Mr Michael Choi, Mr David Wong and Mr Barney Cheng ) to share their insights and learnings from the pandemic. The talks explored the intersections of their lives, work, leadership and faith, and how to find hope in the midst of challenges. Many guests were deeply encouraged by the talks. We are pleased to witness a number of workplace Alpha birthed out of the interview series, bringing the love of Jesus to the marketplace.

第五波疫情帶給香港人的影響前所未見，我們希望 將盼望的信息帶進職場。我們很榮幸能夠邀請到梁 錦松先生、蔡涯棉先生、王仕雄先生及鄭兆良先生 幾位城中的領袖，分享他們在疫情時不同領域上的 「人生功課」， 探討他們面對生活、工作、領導和 信仰的挑戰時，如何得著力量和盼望。很多受眾都 表示深受鼓舞，及後我們亦見證不少信徒在職場開 辦啟發，把耶穌的愛帶進他們的辦公室。

During the pandemic, we leveraged both online and offline methods to spread the Gospel. Online platforms transcend geographical boundaries to connect believers in different industries such as finance, insurance and engineering. The Gospel was advanced in the workplace through synchronised online and offline small groups. We believe this model could

Advancing workplace evangelism begins with leadership development. In 2022, we launched the "Alpha Mentorship Program" to nurture young workplace leaders, and the "Halftime Summit" to develop Alpha Coaches as well as core Alpha leaders. We have thus expanded our workplace network and developed more leaders in the SPARK workplace missions movement.

I used to think that it is very difficult to run Alpha in the workplace. I now discovered that it is actually fairly easy to run Alpha as the most important role for us is to simply invite colleagues. Everything else then falls into place. At Alpha, we believe that meeting the tangible needs of people can help us reach those who are outside of the Church. As family plays a significant role in Chinese culture, it is unsurprising that the Marriage and Parenting Courses prove to be effective pre-evangelisation tools. Through the courses, participants can learn how to strengthen their marriage and family relationships from a Christian perspective in a relaxed way. They also have an opportunity to get to know brothers and sisters in the Church, leading to their hearts being prepared to eventually encounter Jesus.

The pandemic and social unrest have presented many challenges to Christian organisations in Hong Kong. In 2022, we are thankful that we can collaborate with different organisations ( including Hong Kong Awana, Boys' Brigade, Family Value Foundation, Superbook etc. ) in response to the opportunities relating to pastoring youth, children and parents. These collaborations allow us to experience the spirit of love and unity as one body of Christ, so that together we can bless the families in Hong Kong.

疫情和社會動盪為香港的福音機構帶來不少挑戰。 2022 年我們與不同的機 構合作 ， 包括：香港 Awana 、基督少年軍、維護家庭基金、 Superbook 等 ， 藉此回應牧者在牧養青少年、兒童和父母時遇到的挑戰。這些協作能補 足各機構的限制 ， 更體驗主內一家彼此相愛的價值 ， 成為合一的見證 ， 同心 祝福香港的家庭事工。

Through the Parenting Course, we are able to effectively build relationships with parents and respond to their needs. After the Parenting Course, we invite the parents to join Alpha to encounter God. Every year, we have the privilege to witness how the lives of parents are transformed and families are restored.

Celia formerly struggled with emotional issues, fearing that people disliked and rejected her. But through ACTS, she came to realise that God is real and loves her deeply. Her group leader shared the change in her, "Celia was a bit reserved when we first met her, but now she is very willing to share. She simply has a different glow. It is amazing how God transformed her through ACTS."

Since taking the course, Celia has become eager to share with others about God, including her little sister, who previously had violent tendencies but has begun to see amazing changes in her own life as well.

Celia 以前比較情緒化 ， 害怕別人排斥她。但透過 ACTS ， 她發現 天父是真實的 ， 並且深愛著自己。組長分享了她的轉變：「 Celia 開始比較害羞 ， 亦有點保留 ， 但現在卻很願意與人分享。她整個人變 得截然不同 ， 上帝奇妙地透過 ACTS 轉化了她。 」

經歷 ACTS 之後 ， Celia 主動分享信仰 ， 鼓勵和安慰身邊的人。例 如她的妹妹一直情緒暴躁 ，甚至有時動手打人；Celia 為她祈禱後 ， 妹妹不再用暴力之餘 ， 甚至主動想祈禱 ， 令 Celia 很驚訝 ， 並改善 了一家人的關係。

Bernard has been a sport fanatic since he was a child, but when he had to stop exercising due to a serious injury, he felt very sad and helpless. He then had the opportunity to join Alpha, and found the discussions lively and down-to-earth. Through the journey, he felt increasingly sure of God's love for him, and deeply enjoyed the intimate moments with Him. During this time, God also miraculously healed his foot injury. A month later, he recovered fully and even managed to run his favourite marathon.

110,000 people have heard the Gospel through CAFS

Alpha Film Series (CAFS)!

啟發首套普通話影片系列 ――《華人啟發》影片系列

Produced by the Chinese for the Chinese, CAFS was filmed in 7 different locations around the world. For the first time in the history of Alpha, the film series contents are presented entirely in Mandarin. The series allows a Mandarin-speaking audience to explore life, meaning and the Christian faith through their heart language, as well as content that is culturally relevant to them.

CAFS is hosted by Rev. Andrew Chai and 2 young Chinese hosts, featuring Chinese experts and culturally relevant testimonies. The film series presents the Gospel as a truth that transcends cultural barriers and touches the lives of the guests. CAFS has proven to be an effective tool for evangelising to the Mandarin-speaking community around the globe.

Since its official launch in July 2022, we estimate that over 110,000 people all over the world have heard the Gospel through CAFS.

With almost 1 in 7 people in Hong Kong being Mandarin native speakers, we are excited that CAFS provides a powerful tool to reach the Mandarinspeaking community. CAFS is effective for both the professional community and new immigrant families. We will launch a Cantonese-dubbed version of CAFS in March 2023, encouraging the local church to flexibly use the Mandarin and Cantonese video series to seize the evangelistic opportunity this season.

《華人啟發》影片系列由華人為華人製作 ， 分 別在全球七個不同的地方拍攝 ， 是啟發歷史 上首次將影片系列內容完全以普通話呈現。 目的是讓華人可以透過自己的語言 ， 以及相 似生活體驗的故事和觀點 ， 來探索生命、人

生意義和基督信仰。

《華人啟發》影片系列由蔡頌輝牧師和兩位年 輕華人主持 ， 當中的見證故事和不同範疇專 家都是來自華人群體 ， 他們將使用與文化相 關的例子解說 ， 來讓華人背景的觀眾更有共 鳴。影片呈現福音是一個跨文化、符合來賓 生活背景的真理 ， 因此影片系列成為有效工 具向普通話群體介紹福音。

2022 年 7 月份正式推出以來 ， 估計全球超 過 110,000 人已透過《華人啟發》影片系列 接觸福音。

I deeply resonated with the Mandarin CAFS. I never thought that simply playing videos and chatting with one another could lead to someone committing their lives to Jesus. I pray that CAFS will ignite more people to be the salt and light of the world.

We are excited to launch the first Alpha film series in MandarinChinese

ALPHA STORIES 啟發見證

After migrating from the Mainland to Hong Kong one year ago, Pin Fang realised that her husband was not willing to take up family responsibilities, and he did not care about the two kids. The couple was constantly in conflict, and Pin Fang did not have friends to talk to. She felt lonely, depressed, and suffered from insomnia.

Pin Fang used to dismiss Christianity as irrelevant, since she perceived it as a Western religion, and the church sermons meant nothing to her. But because of the care packages provided to her by the church, Pin Fang was connected to a group of church friends and decided to join Alpha together. To her surprise, she discovered that the relevant and down-to-earth examples in Alpha helped her understand the birth and resurrection of Jesus, how authoritative the Bible is, and through this she found meaning and hope in life.

As a new immigrant, the huge cultural difference makes it challenging for Pin Fang to become part of a church, even if she is willing to accept Jesus. Initially Pin Fang was worried that she may be ridiculed or offend others. But the culture of hospitality and acceptance in Alpha gave her a unique space to speak freely and truly be herself. She started going to church, joined a Bible study, and even showed willingness to be baptised.

After joining Alpha, Pin Fang became much more positive and learned self-love. She learned how to communicate with her children, and also shared her parenting experience with other new immigrants. God even miraculously healed her long-term insomnia problem, healing not just her heart but also her body.

品芳一年前從中國內地移居香港後 ， 才發現 丈夫不願意承擔家庭責任 ， 亦不太理會兩個 小孩 ， 夫妻之間分歧很大 ， 而品芳身邊也沒 有朋友傾訴 ， 感覺極度孤單 ， 經常處於憂鬱 狀態 ， 也飽受失眠的困擾。

以往品芳認為基督教是西方宗教 ， 即使聽講 道也不太明白 ， 感到事不關己。但是因為要 領取生活物資的緣故 ， 品芳在教會認識了一 群朋友 ， 決定一起參加啟發 ， 卻發現啟發生 活化的例子有助她明白到耶穌為何要降生和 復活 ， 理解到聖經原來很有權威 ， 而且體會 到自己的人生可以很有意義和盼望。

作為新移民 ， 即使願意接受耶穌 ， 仍可能因 著巨大文化差異而對教會卻步。品芳怕「 唔 識嘢 」或者「 講錯嘢 」，自己可能被嘲笑之餘 ， 甚至會得罪別人。但品芳在啟發小組行山、 野餐、燒烤等輕鬆聯誼當中體驗到接納和款 待文化 ，發現可以暢所欲言 ，做真正的自己。

漸漸地 ， 她不但願意返教會 ， 加入查經班 ， 甚至願意洗禮。

參加啟發後 ， 品芳變得更開朗 ， 學懂怎樣愛

自己 ， 同時學習怎樣與孩子溝通 ， 甚至跟相 似背景的新移民分享育兒心得。神更奇妙地 醫治了她多年的失眠問題 ， 不但醫治了她的 心 ， 更醫治了她的身體。
