10 CORONAVIRUS (COVID-19) This issue was in process before the Coronavirus (COVID-19), which has impacted hundreds of thousands across the globe, reached North America.

As such, you will not see the virus reflected in the bulk of our content. You will hear from International President, Jacqueline Schools, as she reflects on the issue and the meaning of sisterhood in her President’s Letter. The effects of this virus have been devastating to many, causing fever, cough, shortness of breath, as well as pneumonia and acute respiratory failure. In extreme circumstances,

complications from COVID-19 have resulted in death.

This pandemic has influenced the way in which many across the nation operate, and this extends to our collegiate chapters.

Many of them have had their classes transition to online learning, while others have had their semester put on hold until conditions improve. Throughout this experience, the Alpha Phi Executive Office has been communicating with our members to ensure they have the support and resources necessary to remain safe and connected during this time.

As we approach the end of a challenging academic year, I am in awe of the character, innovation and excellence showcased by our sisters across North America.

Since our founding in 1872, Alpha Phi has been committed to a shared strength of character and dedication to purpose. As the world tackles a global coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, prompting many campuses to suspend operations, I am proud of the pioneering spirit, flexibility and adaptability to changing circumstances shown by Alpha Phis.

Our organization continues to pivot, to lead and to develop. Innovation has been a hallmark of Alpha Phi, and our willingness to be courageous defines our sisterhood. Back in the 1990s, Alpha Phi had a novel idea to create a web page on the “world wide web.” Today it is hard to believe that some saw this move as controversial, but Alpha Phi saw the potential and created the first National Panhellenic Council organization presence on the internet! Over twenty years later, Alpha Phi is still expanding boundaries and, in the spring, we refreshed alphaphi.org to reflect the evolution of our organization and our members. The new website will provide an engaging and user-friendly experience through a cutting-edge technology platform that puts the focus on connection.

The excellence of Alpha Phi’s membership is displayed from the moment a sister joins. In October, Alpha Phi shared our sisterhood with the state of Wyoming, where our new sisters epitomize the service, scholarship, loyalty and excellence of Alpha Phi. Also this past year, Alpha Phi renewed our focus on championing a dynamic alumnae community whose members are inspired, connected to each other and engaged in the future of Alpha Phi. To accomplish this, we are establishing a partnership with leading experts to cultivate a robust and vibrant community that connects alumnae purposefully, personally and professionally.

More to come on this alumnae network! The excellence of Alpha Phi is truly a lifelong experience — not just “four years, but for life!”

In the lead-up to World War II, International President Dorothy Stewart Kernohan (Xi-Toronto) wrote in the January 1939 Quarterly, “Resolution: Don’t let us take too much for granted the privileges and opportunities that are ours every day we live.” Today, this rings true for Alpha Phis around the globe. Thank you for offering support to your communities, neighbors, families and fellow sisters. We enjoy privileges and seize opportunities to shape our world so that we all feel safe, valued and loved. Our dedication to that effort, and to one another, makes us all proud to be Alpha Phis.

Annual Report: Fraternity Facts For the fiscal year ending June 30, 2019, the Fraternity experienced a $1,581,695 increase in net assets, $1,351,752 of which was a direct result of operations and the balance from the investment portfolio. We once again received a clean, unmodified opinion from the independent auditor who reviewed the Fraternity’s financial statements. The Fraternity continues to maintain ample financial strength and capacity to support the needs and growth of the organization. The Fraternity’s net assets remain strong at more than $19.7 million, and the organization remains well poised to continue to take advantage of strategic extension opportunities.

How did RFM develop?

Laura Malley-Schmitt (Zeta Phi-MIT), is the woman responsible for developing the Release Figure Methodology (RFM) analysis program that is used to determine the number of members each sorority may welcome. The creation of the program has transformed the way all National Panhellenic Conference (NPC) organizations approach the recruitment process, and the program is used on every college campus that hosts formal recruitment.

“I started by analyzing data sets of multiple campuses and developing some modeling that drew from my background at MIT,” said Laura of how she began working on RFM. “I also interviewed a number of NPC representatives and Fraternity and Sorority Affairs staff who had done some experimentation on their campuses—outside of the law of averages formula that had been used for 50 years.”

After the fundamental model was developed, Laura tested the program on ten campuses to pilot the program in 2002–2003 and worked with Tara Reimer (Zeta Omicron-Johns Hopkins) to refine the process and implement it through excel workbooks. Today, over 500 campuses use RFM. As RFM approaches its 20th year of usage, we are thankful to Laura for her passion for Greek life, her love of Alpha Phi and her commitment to innovation. Over the years, Laura has held a variety of roles, among them Alpha Phi International President, Executive Board Director, International Governor and Collegiate Chapter Strategy. Additionally, she was part of the Alumnae Strategy Team and NPC Delegation.

Fraternity Updates

Alpha Phis from (Iota Mu-Georgia Tech), (Gamma Eta-North Texas) and (Iota Xi– Denver) engage their communities in donating blood to save lives during the Alpha Phi Day of Service.

Day of Service Generosity and a philanthropic spirit are hallmarks of the Alpha Phi sisterhood. Part of the high ideals of membership, the giving spirt that Alpha Phis demonstrate is a quality that we know extends beyond the campus grounds.

For this first time, Alpha Phi organized a Day of Service to rally all members— collegians and alumnae—to participate in an act of volunteerism.

Held February 29, 2020, the inaugural Alpha Phi Day of Service celebration invited all members to participate in blood donation. There were five dedicated locations where members gathered to give blood, including Chicago, Los Angeles, Dallas, Atlanta and Denver. Members who were unable to visit one of the five Day of Service blood donation sites were also encouraged to seek ways to donate blood in their own communities.

According to the American Red Cross, every two seconds, someone in the United States needs blood and SPRING 2020

one blood donation can potentially save up to three lives. Blood donations are necessary for cancer treatments, chronic illnesses, transfusions, treatment for traumatic injuries and use in surgeries. With the need so great, Alpha Phis across the country aimed to lend a hand and encourage others to do the same.

In total, more than 500 individuals donated blood at the five donation sites and through various Alpha Phi Day of Service events our chapters held across North America. Take a look and see how Alpha Phis across the U.S. and Canada helped make a positive impact on health in their communities.

Thank you to all Alpha Phis who helped make this Day of Service one that may improve and save lives for thousands across the country. We are proud of your commitment to serving others and look forward to sharing news about the Day of Service plans for 2021!

Simone Sober (Beta Pi–USC) and Meghana Keeta (Iota Sigma–Carnegie Mellon) attended the 2020 Alpha Phi Leadership Conferences along with other members of their chapters and generously agreed to share their experiences with our readers.

Held regularly since 1965, the Alpha Phi Leadership Conferences are designed to create professional development opportunities that both strengthen the chapters and individual members. Alpha Phi is committed to empowering its members to lead and serve, and we offer resources and education that can inspire them to achieve their goals.

LEADERSHIP CONFERENCE:

Los Angeles— North and West Quadrants

Simone Sober, Chapter President (Beta Pi—USC) What were you most looking forward to experiencing while at the event?

I was looking forward to meeting all the other women from chapters and collaborating with other presidents to work on ideas to bring back to our chapter.

What did you learn from other chapters while at Leadership Conference? It was really interesting to hear from other chapters on how their COB processes worked…. I heard suggestions from Ohio State and Louisiana State University on how they were able to integrate COBs into their chapter and make them feel as welcome as possible.

What session most engaged you?

We had a session that featured a speaker who gave an amazing presentation about diversity and inclusion. It was especially interesting to me, as that was one of my focuses in stepping into this role…I am always looking for more ways for our chapter to adapt.

How would you recommend Leadership Conference to other Alpha Phi leaders?

Leadership Conference was a really unique experience in that the Executive Council and I were able to reflect on what has been working for our chapter, while also thinking about what can be changed for the future.

I would recommend others use this time to work with their peers, listen to what other tools chapters utilize and think about how those ideas can be implemented in their own chapters.

WHAT SIMONE IS EXCITED TO APPLY WITH HER CHAPTER: MEMBERSHIP EXPERIENCE.

“What stuck with me the most was the focus on membership experience. Alpha Phi has provided me with some of the best memories from my college experience, and I want to focus on delivering those same opportunities for my chapter.”

What did you learn from other chapters at Leadership Conference?

I mainly learned that in order to make an event successful you really have to be innovative and think about how your audience will react to what you are doing.

I learned that if I was going to throw an event and expect people to come out to it, I would have to put myself in their shoes and see if I would go to the event myself.

Anything that we are hosting had to be fun and engaging!

Virginia — South and East Quadrants

Meghana Keeta, Vice President of Community Relations (Iota Sigma—Carnegie Mellon) How did the Leadership Conference experience help bond you and the women with whom you traveled?

Traveling and staying with my sisters was a life-changing experience. I became closer to older sisters…. The days were for talking about how we could implement the things we learned from our various sessions… while the nights were for face masks and tea. It was the perfect getaway we all needed to inspire us to do a better job in our respective roles for each other.

What session most engaged you?

The Vice President of Marketing and Community Relations Partnership to Increase Brand Awareness session was definitely the most engaging. Not only because our advisor, Stephanie Tripi (Beta Omega-Kent State) was leading it, but also because it was really interactive. Stephanie was genuinely passionate about what she was talking about. The information from the session specifically made me realize Alpha Phi’s current position in our local community….

The session also helped me realize how we could use social media and face-to-face campus interactions…to further spread our message and make a positive impact.

What was one thing you learned at Leadership Conference that surprised you?

It amazed me how much passionate young women could do for a good cause such as women’s heart health. Other chapters raised more money than I could even dream of collecting through their various philanthropic efforts.

I was shocked at how impactful other chapters were and how college students were capable of doing so much good. The tremendous amount of success other chapters faced made me more motivated to work hard and strive to reach new heights.

A Message from the Alpha Phi Committee on Leadership

WHAT MEGHANA IS EXCITED TO APPLY WITH HER CHAPTER:

"If there is one event that screams Alpha Phi it is definitely the Red Dress Event.

Almost every other chapter had some form of it, except us. Hearing about the changes other chapters made to their Red Dress Gala made me realize that the event could be a possibility for our chapter as well."

The Committee on Leadership (COL) thanks the membership for its participation in the nomination and elections process for the International Executive Board (IEB). This biennium, the COL encouraged broad participation from the membership about applying for the IEB, solicited referrals of qualified candidates, sought feedback from the membership about potential IEB members and interviewed both IEB candidates as well as their references. This extensive COL process resulted in: • 13 candidate referrals • 19 IEB applications from members and • 165 members who provided feedback on IEB candidates.

The slate of candidates is posted at https://alphaphi.org. All candidates have: (1) Significant knowledge about and diverse experience with the Fraternity in addition to (2) Strong and diverse professional experiences that will advance the strategic plan of the organization during the 20202022 biennium.

These candidates will be presented to the delegates attending the 2020 Alpha Phi Convention.

Thank you to COL members for their work in this electoral process, including: Billie Battiato (PhiOklahoma), chair; Katie Foster (Delta Nu-Maine), Jenny Holsman Tetreault (Gamma Pi-Arizona), Evan Guthrie Jones (Omega-Texas), Lindsay Martin Poss (Beta Psi-San Jose State), Emma Montag (Iota Iota-George Washington), Carly Sincavitch (Iota Rho-Clemson) and Carol Wilde Wahl (Delta Kappa-Wisconsin La Crosse).

Additional information about the Fraternity’s election process will be presented by the “Elections Committee” in advance of the Alpha Phi Convention in June 2020.

ALPHA PHI'S ACHIEVING EXCELLENCE

ONE OF US

Lynn A. Johnson

Initiated as an Alpha Phi in 1978, Lynn (Mestnik) Johnson (Delta Gamma—Northern Colorado) worked hard to serve others and enact positive change in her community.

As a result, her career has soared.

In 2017, she was appointed by President Trump to be his Assistant Secretary for the Administration for Children and Families in the US Department of Health and Human Services. After a lengthy confirmation process, she was sworn into the role in August of 2018.

Lynn joined Alpha Phi because of the warmth of its members and its high standards of integrity, character and inclusivity. The relationships she built within the sisterhood helped set the stage for how she continues to prioritize people in her work.

A devoted wife and mom to three children, Lynn

understands all too well the perseverance required when working toward big, bold goals.

Frustrated that helping others is often hindered by red tape, Lynn knew that—rather than complain—the best thing she could do to make a difference was to jump into the system, feet first, and attempt to put the focus back on helping those who need it most.

As passionate about people as she is about public service, Lynn learned much over the years by taking time to listen to others and learn about their lives. In college, she took a class where students were asked to live on the streets of Denver for one week. Lynn notes this as an extremely influential and eyeopening part of her journey.

After graduating college, Lynn moved to Arizona and served

Fraternity Updates as a Chapter Consultant for Alpha Phi while she pursued her master’s degree in social work.

She began working in a prison, earned a place as a State Parole Officer and eventually took on a role as a US Probation and Parole officer (USPO).

In 1999 in Colorado, Lynn went to work for Governor Bill Owens as his Family and Children Policy Analyst and Director of his office for Family and Children. On her first day in that position, she watched with the rest of the world as the Columbine High School shooting devastated the community and shocked the nation. “As [the shooting] impacted the lives of so many, it also impacted mine and was an influence in my work going forward,” recalled Lynn.

In the following years, Lynn became the Chief of Staff for Lieutenant Governor Jane Norton, began her own consulting firm and was named the Executive Director of Human Services in Jefferson County Colorado, where she attacked poverty, abuse, neglect, hunger, homelessness and more.

Among the proudest moments in her career, Lynn names establishing the Jeffco Prosperity Partners program.

Through Jefferson County Human Services, this program assisted Head Start parents in

their efforts to break the cycle of generational poverty by focusing on moving all of the children to high school graduation, as well as education and self-sufficiency for the parents.

Lynn is proud to be working alongside the nation’s leaders to address the issues impacting children and families. She cites President Donald Trump and Advisor Ivanka Trump’s meeting with low-income parents to discuss access to affordable, high quality childcare and paid family leave, as well as Vice President Mike Pence’s meeting with foster children during a National Adoption Month event, as positive steps. She is thrilled this momentum affords her and her counterparts the opportunity to highlight what she calls, “the most important work…protecting and positively impacting our foster care children while creating permanency for the thousands of children waiting to be adopted.”

Lynn believes that the Administration for Children and Families (ACF), an agency that includes 60 programs and over 1,200 staff throughout the US and territories, aims to strengthen families before they need to enter the system and also promotes economic mobility through enhanced training, education and employment assistance so

individuals may have the dignity of working.

Currently, ACF is focused on a new foster/adoption initiative which aims to place approximately 125,000 children who have been sitting in the foster care system with a plan for adoption. She said, “Our goal is to work with the governors in all states to move these children to safe, permanent caring homes within the next 12-15 months.

Every day matters to a child.”

“Every minute of every day is critical to demonstrate to the country how better to serve,” said Lynn. “Quality education, training, mental health assistance, substance abuse recovery, trauma counseling and much more should—and can be— available to change our culture to one [in which] everyone has the dignity and respect they deserve to be successful.”

“I have a very strong faith and know that we in America can do better to serve those who are vulnerable, hungry, scared, homeless, unemployed and hurting in any way. I have held scared and abused children, cried with parents who felt helpless and fought for parents wanting to better care for their children,” said Lynn. “Looking into the eyes of people and helping them feel dignity, hope and love is the most important part of my journey.”

Q&A How has Alpha Phi continued to play a role in your life?

My Alpha Phi sisters are still my encouragers, confidantes, prayer warriors and family—and I am theirs. When we get together, you could never tell that 40 years have passed since we pledged.

We continue to create new memories, share sorrows and hold each other up, no matter the situation.

I know that I can look up an alumnae group wherever I go, and I will have instant family!

What is the best lesson that you have learned so far?

There will always be hard times, difficult employers and life-changing situations ... but how we get through the challenges shows true character.

An attitude of love and hope can get us through anything.

What advice can you share with other women?

It is critical to never compromise your integrity.

Don’t beat yourself up over mistakes; they are lessons to learn so you can pursue the next opportunity. Doors open; don’t be afraid to walk through them. You don’t have to prove your success; humility will speak for itself. As women, we can do anything we set out to do … but we need to remember we don’t have to do it all at the same time!

We are inspired by their efforts to aim beyond the horizon and then doggedly pursue the goals that thrill us. Thanks to their success, we are strengthened in our belief that opportunities are meant to be seized and that we can achieve anything.

Many nominations were submitted for consideration in the Alpha Phi: 30 Under 30 highlight, and each nomination showcased an Alpha Phi deserving of recognition. From those nominations, 30 amazing women across a variety of industries were selected for this special feature. In addition to meeting the age requirement of being age 30 or younger, these women demonstrated innovation, leadership, excellence, generosity and commitment to others.

In order to best showcase the members selected, we have included the stories of eight of the 30 here in print. All 30 women are celebrated at alphaphi.org/30under30, and you may also have seen some of them highlighted on our Alpha Phi social media channels.

E.L. Doctorow, an American novelist, spoke of the act of writing and the drive necessary to accomplish that task by saying, “…You can only see as far as the headlights, but you can make the whole trip that way.” That work ethic is applicable far beyond the literary world.

When we make it our goal to improve our corner of the universe, we may not be able to visualize each step or predict the curve in the path we are on; yet, something compels us… to chase down that dream, to focus and strategize, to connect the dots and to blaze the trail so that we light the way for ourselves and for each other.

Sage Lenier Student Professor & Activist WHEN SAGE MEETS OBSTACLES,

she bursts through them with determination. After slipping through the cracks in the system, she dropped out of high school at age 16 before eventually working her way back into school and later being accepted to UC Berkeley.

She joined Alpha Phi because she desired a home base, somewhere with stability and support so she could focus on her goals. “Keeping a roof over my head and food in my stomach was the biggest challenge of my first two years of college. I joined Alpha Phi as a junior and took Three words out loans to move into she uses the [Alpha Phi] house so I to describe herself: could finally be comfortable and well-fed,” said Sage.

“Growing up a lowFIERY income, young girl of color, EMPATHETIC I’ve been passionate about SHARP-WITTED social justice, equity and access since I was twelve,” said Sage. During her senior year of high school, she developed a particular interest in environmental activism with the realization, “that there are no human rights on a dead planet.”

Sage was disappointed with the environmental curriculum offerings in college because the

classes stopped short of compelling students to action or cultivation of a vision for improvement. To close the gap, Sage created “Solutions for a Sustainable Future,” a comprehensive environmental education providing students with the necessary knowledge and tools for creating meaningful advancement of sustainability and equity in their own lives and in the systems in which we live.

She has been teaching this course at UC Berkeley for five semesters, growing the class to 300 students.

Sage is the youngest person ever to teach a class this large at Berkeley.

Sage hopes to secure grant funding to expand this course to other schools following her graduation.

“The imminent and actualizing ecological crisis that could wipe out entire subsets of humanity drives me to make a difference,” said Sage.

Her success has been shared in the New York Times, and she has been recognized by the California Higher Education Sustainability Conference.

Sage has also been nominated for the Chancellor’s Sustainability Award and invited to give keynote speeches at multiple conferences and events.

Her advice:

Educate yourself on the real human impacts of the problem you’re tackling and remember to elevate the voices of those involved.

Sabré Cook

Professional Racing Driver & Mechanical Engineer

SABRÉ IS FLOORING THE WORLD with her competitive spirit, her talent and her drive. A successful racing driver, she has nearly 15 years of experience in karting, formula cars and sports cars. Sabré began driving at age eight, and she began racing competitively at the age of 10.

When she came to college, Sabré joined Alpha Phi to have a strong group of women to depend upon and with whom to grow. She credits her sisters Three words with supporting her she uses studies and pushing her to describe herself: outside of her comfort zone to experience new activities that PASSIONATE complement her THOUGHTFUL passion for racing.

DEDICATED Over the years, she has won numerous awards and distinctions, including many state, national and world championships.

She was a Team USA selectee, a Women in Sports Foundation Project Podium grant recipient, an Infiniti Engineering Academy USA winner and the first female to qualify for a KZ World Championship Main Event.

She earned her college degree in Mechanical Engineering and won the United States region of the INFINITI Engineering Academy

which resulted in her employment with INFINITI Global and Renault Formula One organization.

Sabré recently progressed through the W Series evaluation and was awarded one of 18 positions in the all-female racing series. “I will be the only American driver this year, so I am very excited to represent the US!,” said Sabré. She will also race the Indy Pro 2000 series as well as some select Porsche Club of America events.

She has overcome sexism in her field, as well as challenges like anxiety, loss, physical and mental stress and more. What pushes her forward is a desire to learn and to be the best. “I also want to help make the world a better place and inspire people — especially young women — to go for what they want…. I do have to give credit to the amazing support I get from my family and close friends. Without them, I couldn’t do what I do, and I love making them proud,” said Sabré.

Her advice:

It’s all about perspective. Positivity is choice.

We are the programmers of our own minds.

Most importantly, NEVER EVER GIVE UP.

it is an open door. As the Deputy Press Secretary and Communications Advisor for the National Aeronautics and Space Administration, Katy is thrilled to create messaging and educate the public about the way NASA discoveries are changing civilization and bettering the human Three words condition across the she uses globe through science to describe herself: and exploration.

communications director for Georgia Congressman Doug Collins, and, after leaving Capitol Hill, Katy joined a small public relations firm where she polished her communications skills and practiced versatility.

As part of a military family, Katy grew up with a gratitude for those serving the country and with a deep respect for public service.

When an opportunity came to join NASA, Katy jumped at the chance to “tell the story of one of the world’s most recognizable brands at such a pivotal time in history.”

With so much planned in space discovery, Katy is proud to be part of the most exciting time for the American space sector since the Apollo program that went to the Moon in the 1960s and it fills her with purpose.

“It is invigorating to be part of an organization that is moving in a bold, inclusive direction with ambitious deadlines,” said Katy.

Prominent among these deadlines is the year 2024, when the Artemis program will return Americans to the Moon and put the first woman on the lunar surface. Katy looks forward to celebrating the moment and being part of that milestone.

Her advice:

Pick a greater purpose and pursue it. The path to where you want to go might not be straight, but if you stay focused and keep your eyes on the prize, you could end up going far – like to the Moon!

Sarah Safir Smith Z E TA G A M M A – S A N TA C L A R A

WHEN SARAH BEGAN TO SEARCH for that

first post-graduation job, she set her mind on achieving a role with a national sports outlet. She did not get it. What she landed, instead, was an opportunity to shine.

Employed as program manager with Google, Sarah’s older sister, also an Alpha Phi, helped circulate her resume to teams she knew at Three words Google and when the right she uses to describe entry level role opened herself: up, Sarah felt the stars had aligned. She earned EMPATHETIC her place on the team and jumped right into THOUGHTFUL coordination and logistics DETAILwork, spending six years ORIENTED with that internal team and later growing into managing key programs.

“I learned that social impact work is incredibly motivating to me, and I’m so lucky to have had opportunities in this space so early on in my career,” said Sarah. “I loved that first job and my teammates, but I knew I needed a new challenge.” When she saw an opportunity to take a leap of faith and become part of an even more complex and visible external program, Sarah jumped at it. She leads the operations for Google IT Professional Certificates, ensuring users have a smooth and positive experience. Sarah works with cross functional teams to drive current and new projects randing in scope from engineering to legal to technical support.

Inspired by the opportunity to create a more equitable world, while fostering connections between people, networks and opportunities drives much of Sarah’s work. “My time in Alpha Phi always reminds me of the importance of having a community,” said Sarah. “Having a support network — whether in person, virtual or somewhere in between — is so important no matter what phase of life you’re in, and I’m glad that I can continue to draw from my Alpha Phi experiences to positively impact others.”

Opportunities to make a positive difference are everywhere if you look close enough: in a day job for an organization that help people’s lives in big or small ways, in a volunteering role for your local community or even in just doing everyday things rooted in kindness (yes, I mean holding the door for others!)…My advice is to feel empowered to seek out or create these opportunities to have an impact. There is so much need everywhere you look… .

Elizabeth Rose Mountaineer & Author I O TA X I – D E N V E R

IT MAY HAVE STARTED AS A LITERAL LEAP

of faith, but the passion she found in mountain climbing has propelled Elizabeth forward each step of the way. Elizabeth is the youngest Canadian to climb the “Seven Summits,” the term applied to each of the highest mountains on every continent — including Mount Everest.

She is one of fewer than 500 climbers to achieve this feat. For Elizabeth, the journey all started from simply saying “yes” to a new adventure and allowing herself to develop a new passion.

“I was fresh out of Three words university looking for she uses a job, and the job hunt to describe herself: became much harder than I thought it would be. Frustrated and GUMPTION losing momentum, I felt PASSIONATE the urge to accomplish POSITIVE something so that I could revisit my job hunt with new motivation,” said Elizabeth. So, she tried something completely out of character for her — she climbed Mount Kilimanjaro. That experience ignited a passion for mountain climbing and gave her a new perspective.

This founding member of the Iota Xi chapter is able to achieve and persevere thanks to her mindset, as well as the support of friends and family. From a young age, her parents instilled in her the importance of giving back to the community. Her experience

in Alpha Phi also underscored the importance of generosity and service.

While making the final climb, Elizabeth also raised $213,000 to support recreation-therapy at Canuck Place in Vancouver, which operates hospice and mobile clinic programs providing palliative care for children. “Raising money for those terminally ill kids allowed them to experience their own adventures in the time they had left. Seeing the smiles on their faces when I got them to sign a flag that I would bring with me to the summit was indescribable,” said Elizabeth.

“The main reason I climb is because I love the challenge. The sense of accomplishment after persevering through a challenge is what keeps me coming back,” said Elizabeth.

This past year, she took on the challenge of capturing her experiences in her first published book, Written in the Snow: My Journey to the Seven Summits. What comes next is sure to pique our interest.

Recently, Elizabeth has joined the Fire Academy and is training to be a firefighter in Vancouver.

Her advice:

Go after what you want in life and don’t let anyone tell you that your dreams are out of reach. Don’t be scared of failure. Believe in yourself and dream big.

SHANA IS A TULANE MEDICAL STUDENT,

and says her journey is defined by those who have supported her along the way. Where she met naysayers, Shana also encountered people who reminded her that her ideas matter. As the creator of “Queericulum,” she continues to Three words advocate for others. she uses “Queericulum” is a to describe queer health curriculum herself: presented in a series of online health modules EFFERVESCENT that contain primary RESILIENT resources and caseCHANGEMAKER based scenarios to introduce medical students to the breadth of LGBTQI+ patient and family issues.

“My passion comes from a profound sense of justice.

I have so much privilege and power to make a difference in the realm of LGBTQI+ health equity, and, as a queer woman, I am committed to fighting for respectful, quality care for us all,” said Shana.

She also serves as the director of the Medical Student Pride Alliance, a national 501(c)(3) that serves to unite medical school LGBTQI+ affinity groups nationwide. Her work has earned her recognition from the Tulane Center for Social

Innovation and Design, as well as the LGBTQ Health Achievement award from the American Medical Student Association, among others.

Shana faces barriers imposed by homophobia, transphobia and racism in medicine, and she works to be part of the solution to these social challenges. These are not the only challenges she has overcome. While in college, Shana survived a hit-andrun, and the ways her sisters rallied around her deeply impacted her life.

That accident left her with a traumatic brain injury; yet, Shana continued on — determined to heal to stay on track with her premedical coursework. She employed different study strategies to accommodate her short-term memory loss, and, with an Alpha Phi sister by her side, she conquered the material.

“My sisters demonstrated what it means when true friends stand by your side when life gets tough. I strive to reciprocate that love and support because, to me, that is what it means to be an Alpha Phi,” said Shana.

Her advice:

Don’t wait for anyone to give you permission to speak up. You don’t need a degree or a stage to make a difference.

Amanda Nguyen Nobel Peace Prize Nominee, Founder of Rise

WHEN AMANDA WENT TO COLLEGE, she

thought she would graduate and become an astronaut. Her world changed when she became a victim of sexual assault.

According to the National Sexual Violence Resource Center, one in five women in the United States will be raped at some point in their lifetime.

“After my rape, I felt despair. I felt powerless, invisible, alone. But I also felt fire. So, with a deep belief in the

American creed — equality under the law — I chose action over despair,” said Amanda. “Together with a team called Rise, we organized and did the impossible — passed the Survivors’ Bill of Rights unanimously through Congress. If that bill could speak, it would scream. It would sing from the pages. It would light itself on fire. It represents the endless pursuit of a more perfect union.”

Rise is the most efficient social movement in modern US history and achieved that record by training over 200 organizers to unanimously pass 29 laws that impact 80 million people.

The organization is grounded in the belief that voices of citizens matter and empowers citizens to pen their own rights into existence.

Community is important to Amanda. “Alpha Phi has created a long-lasting community for me.

I love my sisters dearly. I am so proud of my little. One of our interns at Rise [is] an Alpha Phi. Alpha Phi has great humans in it,” she said. Driven by justice and joy, Amanda is now helping others find, build and foster communities of their own.

Amanda has been recognized as a Forbes 30 Under 30 member, by Foreign Policy as a Top 100 Leading Global Thinker and by Marie Claire as a Young Woman of the Year. In 2019 she was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize. She is a Heinz Laureate, a Nelson Mandela Changemaker and part of the TIME 100. Before taking her place at the helm of Rise, Amanda was appointed by President Barack Obama to the United States Department of State as his deputy White House liaison.

Her advice:

In America, no one is powerless when we come together. No one can make us invisible when we demand to be seen.

Emmy-nominated T V writer for Full Frontal with Samantha Bee WRITER AND COMEDIAN, Nicole was inspired by her college experience.

She made a name for herself by trusting her gut and giving herself the freedom to try her hand at things that made her happy.

“I left Northwestern wanting to do everything — be a serious actor, make experimental plays, do Three words comedy, write poetry,” she uses recalled Nicole. Life has to describe herself: taught her that she has the opportunity to be selective about what passions she GORGEOUS pursues and when she MODEL tackles them. “Comedy STRESSED and writing make me happiest and were also the areas where the most doors were open for me,” she said.

Achieving what she has is far from easy, and she uses her voice to make a difference. Nicole takes the opportunity to have a platform from which to speak very seriously. She focuses her talents on the people and experiences that mean the most to her and that — along with a fierce drive — has yielded success.

This dynamic professional was named one of the 50 Funniest People in Brooklyn by Brooklyn Magazine. You may have read her work at GQ.com, The Neu Jorker and Paul Ryan Magazine. She also served as a longtime editor of satirical women’s-focused magazine Reductress, where she co-wrote and co-hosted the podcast “Mouth Time! With Reductress.” Nicole has been nominated for three Emmy Awards and three Writers Guild Awards. She has also written pieces

that have earned a GLAAD Award and a Television Academy Honor.

When it comes to her connection to her sisters, Nicole said, “The women of the Beta chapter of Alpha Phi are unapologetically, joyfully ambitious. They’re also committed to paying it forward and some of my most valuable career opportunities have come from fellow Alpha Phis.”

Her advice:

Find a community, particularly if you’re in a maledominated industry. Remember there is room for everyone.

North Carolina Collegian Celebrates National Field Hockey Championship

B

Brooke Behan (Kappa Alpha–UNC Chapel Hill) and her field hockey teammates knew, after their undefeated regular season, that their very best was required to reach their ultimate goal of winning the National Championship.

And that is exactly what they did.

Brooke and the Tar Heels field hockey team won their NCAA Division I National Championship thanks to teamwork and the refusal to give up. “The run for the title was something we talked about early in the season as a goal. Our whole team bought into the idea of taking it one game at a time, as well as always respecting our opponent,” said Brooke.

She learned a love for the game from her mother, who played field hockey in college as well, and Brooke began playing competitively around age 9. Being part of this winning team has been a joy for her because of the welcoming team culture.

“Everyone on the team has a mutual respect for each player, regardless of whether you are a fifth year senior or a red shirt freshman….I also have to mention how supportive my teammates were in my joining a sorority…[they] kept checking in to hear about how the process was going and that support meant so much to me,” said Brooke.

As a current Freshman majoring in media and journalism, she says it has been rewarding to be involved in multiple S PR I N G 2020

communities on campus. Her involvement in both athletics and Alpha Phi have made her college experience fulfilling. She says she is grateful to her Alpha Phi sisters for their accommodation and support of her athletic pursuits.

Her competitive spirit already has her planning for her goals next season, which include working hard, learn from her talented teammates and coaching staff and pushing herself to get better every time she steps on the field.

The 2019 Theta Phi–Christopher Newport Red Dress Gala raised over $15,000 for women’s heart health and educated the campus community on Alpha Phi’s commitment to cardiovascular health. The sisters of Beta Psi–San Jose State have been enjoying sisterhood and supporting one another—as well as Alpha Phi Foundation—in various ways the past few months. The women hosted their annual Heart to Heart week and donated over $10,000 from the activities to Alpha Phi Foundation. Over three days, seven Greek organizations on campus participated in events such as Mac n’ Phis, sticker sales Phi-Ball and a pageant while supporting the efforts of the Foundation. The sisters also joined together for a little fun at a Golden State Warriors basketball game, a visit to a local pumpkin patch and a trip to California’s Great America.

Sisters Emily Berzolla and Maya Nielan (Zeta Phi–MIT), members of the MIT women’s soccer team, have been named to the United Soccer Coaches Division III Scholar AllAmerican team. Maya was selected for First Team and Emily earned a spot on the Second Team. Both were the only two players selected from the New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) and they made it to the Scholar All-American teams for the first time in their athletic careers by earning placement on the United Soccer Coaches All-Region First Team. Prior to this, both women were named as United Soccer Coaches All-Americans, as CoSIDA Academic All-Americans and as United Soccer Coaches All-Region honorees. The NEWMAC also named Maya the Defensive Athlete of the Year and Emily the league’s Athlete of the Year. Congratulations!

Celebrating “Firsts” The newest Alpha Phi members at the University of Wyoming have celebrated many milestones including their first official sisterhood event with skating and Christmas movies.

Collegians Connect with Alumnae Resume and Networking Event The ladies of Kappa Delta–Stevens Institute of Technology hosted an event with their alumnae to network and strengthen their business skills as part of their annual efforts to bring professional development to their chapter. This year, 20 collegians and 12 alumnae, representing careers like engineering, business, journalism, science and more, were in attendance.

The students shared copies of their resumes with alumnae and received recommendations regarding how to improve the resumes and put their best professional foot forward. The event also included time for networking.

Alumnae and collegians alike enjoyed having the opportunity to connect with one another and are already looking forward to next year’s event.

Serving Up a Good Time at Campus “Mac-n-Phis” Events Recently, several campuses hosted “Mac-n-Phi” events in support of Alpha Phi Foundation efforts. Here is a look at the tasty approach our collegians took to generate campus participation and support one another….one pan of macaroni and cheese at a time!

THETA KAPPA–BAYLOR

This Mac-n-Phi event was the first philanthropic event Theta Kappa Alpha Phis held at Baylor! Members felt the event allowed them to form deeper connections with one another as well as develop their presence on campus and in the Baylor community. All members came together to ensure this year’s inaugural event was a success. As the chapter continues to grow and develop, they look forward to continuing philanthropic events like this one, which resulted in 250 tickets sold and successful management of event costs.

KAPPA EPSILON–GEORGIA

This year marked the first time the University of Georgia event took place on the lawn of the new Alpha Phi chapter house, and sisters enjoyed sharing their passion for their sisterhood with the community. A true collaboration, this event was success because members all played a part in coordinating the details. Collectively, they sold 1,834 tickets to the event and were able to donate over $8,000 to Alpha Phi Foundation!

IOTA OMEGA–OLE MISS

This year’s event at Ole Miss included a macaroni and cheese contest that featured five campus fraternity members competing to be the first to finish his pan of mac and cheese. The winner received bragging rights and a donation to the charity of his choice. Members attributed success to their marketing efforts, attention to streamlining logistics that improved the guest experience and using an online system for ticket sales and donations. The women sold 1,004 tickets for this event and donated $8,370 to Alpha Phi Foundation!

Colorado Sisters Connect for

Cardiac Education

hen you find someone who shares your passions, it makes your heart happy. Thanks to a collaboration between several Alpha Phi chapters in Colorado and Starting Hearts, a nonprofit organization dedicated to saving the lives sudden cardiac arrest victims through free CPR and AED training and programs, Alpha Phis in those chapters are gaining a deeper appreciation for cardiac health.

“2019 was our first year working with Starting Hearts,” said Katy Cohen (Iota Zeta–Colorado School of Mines), who served as the chapter’s 2019 President.

“We were really excited to begin our partnership and have thoroughly enjoyed planning future members’ education with their organization.”

Teaming together with Alan Himelfarb, the Executive Director of Starting Hearts, the Iota Zeta chapter has learned much about the importance of CPR and AED education.

As sudden cardiac arrests claim the lives of 475,000 individuals each year across the nation, it is critical to the chain of survival for everyone to know how to perform bystander CPR and how to use an AED. “We are truly inspired by Starting Hearts’ dedication to spreading this education and the innovative approaches they take,” said Katy.

Himelfarb joined the Iota Zeta chapter to deliver the Keynote address at the Red Dress Gala, where he captivated the 250 attendees with personal connections to heart health and encouraged everyone to take action to improve sudden cardiac death survival rates.

Abigail Miller (Delta Gamma–Northern Colorado), Vice President of Community Relations, notes that Starting Hearts reached out to the chapter, wanting to know more about how they could partner with the women of Alpha Phi to better improve heart health awareness on campus.

“The most rewarding part is knowing that all of our members are CPR and AED certified

and can help whenever help is needed. We also were able to put AEDs all over our campus to ensure that more lives [can be] saved [through intervention while waiting for] EMS to arrive," said Abigail.

The Delta Gamma chapter aims to certify every member in CPR and AED usage, and they also plan to collaborate with Starting Hearts help improve community education on these topics.

Erin Jones (Iota Xi–Denver), President, and Grace Rooney (Iota Xi–Denver), Vice President of Community Relations, have been working with Starting Hearts since 2017, educating and training their members in CPR and AED usage.

“In addition,” they noted, “we helped Starting Hearts create a manual [to guide the collaborative work] going forward. Beyond this, Starting Hearts helped us get a defibrillator in our chapter house.”

The Iota Xi chapter has also helped raise funds and awareness for the work the nonprofit does in the community.

Erin shares that her chapter has been impacted by how knowing CPR and AED skills allows each sister the opportunity to positively influence the community.

Thank you to Starting Hearts and the Alpha Phis in Colorado who are working toward improving health for everyone by making bystander CPR and AED awareness priorities in their chapters!

Dedication to Service Meets the Slopes

L

LOURIE (BOIKE) HURLEY (BETA TAU–INDIANA) IS A 10-YEAR

volunteer patroller with the National Ski Patrol who is committed to serving others when they most need it.

Selected as the Western Michigan Region’s 20182019 Overall Outstanding Alpine Patroller, Lourie has spent her time with the organization patrolling Crystal Mountain in Northern Lower Michigan. She has been skiing since the 1980s and turned her love of skiing into an opportunity to offer aid to others who experience medical emergencies on the slopes.

“Working with my fellow patrollers is like being with family. We are there when individuals are hurting and need help,” said Lourie. “To know I can immediately help someone in need is enormously gratifying. I love making a difference.”

Currently holding the positions of Senior Level Patroller, Western Michigan Section Chief, Region OEC Instructor Trainer, Hill Leader, Senior Outdoor Emergency Care Instructor and Toboggan Instructor, Lourie keeps busy. Lourie also works full-time in sales, so this work she does on patrol is a true volunteer passion.

As the leading authority of on-mountain safety, the National Ski Patrol is dedicated to serving the outdoor recreation industry. Founded in 1938, they provide education and accreditation to emergency care and safety service providers. The National Ski Patrol is the largest group of volunteers that provides first aid and rescue services to the public.

Southwest Dallas Area Alumnae Chapter Marks its 30th Anniversary!

Members of the Southwest Dallas area Alpha Phi alumnae chapter enjoyed a catered luncheon at the home of Ginger Cleveland (Omega– Texas) on December 7. Fourteen alumnae were in attendance, including six of the 9 alumnae chapter’s current and past presidents. Sheila George Bright (Gamma Iota–Texas Tech) presented certificates of appreciation along with a beautiful silver cross ornament tied with a Bordeaux ribbon.

On October 12, the Naples Alumnae chapter held their annual Founders Day luncheon and presented two of their members with 75year pins. During the luncheon, Jean Atherton (Beta Delta-UCLA) and Helen Fox (Chi–Montana) received their milestone pins while Past International Presidents of Alpha Phi Jean Hahm (Gamma Nu–Miami University) and Crista Cate Vasina (Delta Gamma– Northern Colorado), now senior director of development at Alpha Phi Foundation, presented an update on the Foundation.

Stepping into the Spotlight IOTA BETA–ST. MARY’S UNIVERSITY

Candice (Garza) Trevino (Iota Beta-St. Mary’s) knows what it takes to lead the way. In 2019, Texas LifeStyle Magazine named her as one of the Five Texas Latinas to know. She is a model for national women’s apparel retailer Lane Bryant, where she is featured in their ad campaigns. Candice shares her style expertise on her blog, Smiles and Pearls, and was awarded the San Antonio Blogger of the Year award. Congratulations, Candice!

BETA–NORTHWESTERN

Valerie Conn (Beta– Northwestern) has been named president of the Science Philanthropy Alliance. An experienced science fundraiser, Valerie previously served as the organization’s executive director. She brings to the table 30 years of experience working with scientists and philanthropists to build a community of private funders to basic science research. Valerie is a recognized expert on science philanthropy and a frequent speaker to philanthropists, university science leaders and fundraising professionals. Prior to joining the Alliance, Valerie was vice president of strategy for the B612 Foundation where she worked with astronauts and scientists to protect Earth from asteroid impacts. Valerie spent a decade in development at the University of Chicago, where she led teams in the Physical Sciences Division as well as university strategic initiatives, including developing and implementing the strategy for resources, partners and marketing for the Giant Magellan Telescope and the Computation Institute. She serves on the Committee on Women in Science, Engineering and Medicine for the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering and Medicine; is on the Strategic Advisory Council for India Allice; and is a working group co-chair for the Healthy Brains Financing Initiative.

Calling all Midwestern Alpha Phis! Kelley Moody (Eta Upsilon–Chapman) is the new morning meteorologist at KCCI 8 in Des Moines, Iowa! Kelley previously worked at KESQ in Palm Springs, California, where she was nominated for an Emmy award three times. She also volunteered with a variety of philanthropies and performed in regionally award-winning theatre productions. While Kelley misses the warm California sun, she’s excited to experience all four seasons and to prep her new viewers for the next round of severe weather.

While Eta Tau–SUNY/Cortland alumnae have reunited to celebrate sisterhood and watch Cortaca football games many times over the years, this year’s gathering drew the largest crowd! More than 150 SUNY/Cortland Alpha Phi alumnae attended the Cortland–Ithaca Cortaca Jug football game on November 16, 2019. Sisters are hoping to keep the momentum going for future events.

Lisa Tognola (Gamma Beta– UC/Santa Barbara) recently published her debut novel, As Long As It’s Perfect, a story about one woman’s obsession with perfection and how far she will go to get what she wants. The novel draws inspiration from Lisa’s life. Her hope is that readers will connect with the book’s characters’ challenges and triumphs.

OMICRON–MIZZOU

Clare Bando (Omicron–Mizzou) recently published a work of historical fiction titled The Bootlegger’s Friend, which is based on the true story of Johnny Lazia, a politician in Kansas City who befriends Giovanni Blando–a bootlegger–and follows their friendship through decadent lifestyles, Prohibition and conspiracies. Clare was inspired to write the novel when her family’s liquor company was sold and she learned the story behind how a simple office desk that was part of the family business was linked to Johnny Lazia and more than six decades of history.

From that desk, her story was born! The book is available in print, digital and audio versions.

AlphaPhi.org This spring alphaphi.org was refreshed to create enhanced opportunities for connection amongst our members. Let’s take a look back at the ways our Fraternity website has evolved over the years…and be sure to log on to the new alphaphi.org.

Today, we have created a website that reflects our diverse members and provides resources for all Alpha Phis.

P urpose of the website

In the beginning, we were establishing a brand presence and providing basic communication for our members.

Most of our members are logging on via their smartphone, tablet or mobile device.

Accessing the website

Collegians and alumnae alike will find resources they can use to foster connections and engage with fellow members.

Audience

We were providing most resources to collegians, especially those who held officer roles.

Features

Members could show their Alpha Phi pride by purchasing lettered items in our online shop and they could perform a sister search to reconnect with friends.

We still showcase opportunities for our members to shop and connect with their sisters across the globe. Now, we also share posts from our Executive Office social media accounts, post easy access to the Alpha Phi Quarterly and other relevant member news.

Leaders Among Us Sally McCall Grant (Gamma–DePauw), International President and past Foundation Chair, was installed as the National Panhellenic Conference chairman and served in that role from 2001 to 2003. First Alternate Delegate Deana Koonsman (Gamma Iota – Texas Tech), who served with Sally on the NPC delegation for many years remarked that Sally is an example of how Alpha Phi’s image is positively affected by Panhellenic representatives at every

level. “Sally’s personality, leadership and competence have enhanced other member group perception of Alpha Phi… Sally’s work shows the importance of building trusting and cooperative relationships with other delegates.”

The installation of Sally as NPC chairman held special significance for Alpha Phi because her two-year term of office occurred exactly 100 years after Alpha Phi called the 1902 meeting that led to the founding of the NPC.
