Our Present Status in Expansion Bv

LILLIAN

V. ScHIPPERS

E xpansion Director ~

FoR two years a great deal of intensive work ha gone into our expansion program. Letters have been written to dean of women, tran fers, al umnae, and chapters. All leads provided have been faithfu lly fo llowed. This type of activity is merely the groun dwork-it does not get chapters directly, but chapters cannot be obtained without it. This year we move into the second phase of expansion, which is visiting likely campuses. Although interviews with college admini trators were requested last year, our representatives were not encouraged to call in person. This year we have been permitted to vi it Fort Hayes, Kansas; Youngstown, Ohio ; Cape Girardeau, Missouri; Carbondale, Illinois ; State College, Pennsylva nia; Queen's College, New York; Lansing, Michigan; and Ann Arbor, Michigan. Also this year th ere have been many requests from groups for information about Alpha Sigma Tau . Alumnae are the most important factor in obtaining new chapters. College administrators seldom want a n ew national on their campus unless there is a strong alumnae group close by to help the new group. In this alumnae group there must be one leader who keeps in constant touch with the local campus situation. In the Akron-Canton Alumnae Chapter Sue McBee is uch a leader. She has not only sold Alpha Sigma Tau to the administration, but she is at all times cognizant of campus developments. THE ANCHOR

Barbara H emm, Ohio State Chairman, has visited three Michigan campuses, one Ohio campus, and has plans to visit everal other Ohio campuses. Gretchen Gaffney, Beta alumnae representative, wi ll visit Alma, Michigan. Ilsa Simpson, Missouri Sta te Chairman, has visited Carbondale, Illinois, and ha written inn umerable letters in the last two years. Lucille Steen, Eastern District President, has visited Queens College, N ew York ; State College, Pennsylvania; and plans to go to Rutgers University and St. J ohn' College. Pauline Wells in California, Georgine Wolff in K ansas City, and Mrs. French in Ohio have visiting assignments, and we expect to hear from them any time. We have had the opportunity this past year to present Alpha Sigma T au to several groups of gi rls. The final step we hope will be the affi liation of one or more of the groups with Alpha Sigma T au. So although we have no new chapters to show for our efforts in the last two years, the groundwork h as been laid . Our pro pects for expansion grow better each year. We are badly in need of alumnae who can work on local campuses, alumnae who can travel ( expen es paid ), and people who will transfe r to another college and work for another chapter. M acomb girls note! If yo u fit into any of the foregoing categon es, get in touch with us quickly! . 1
