Transformed Lives, Churches Nikki Herron Montreat, North Carolina

I am a university graduate, an office administrator, and a convicted cocaine trafficker. Raised in a Christian home, I chose instead to live by my own rules, resulting in a 35-to42-month prison term. The reality of prison was overwhelming, and I was ravaged with guilt when I signed up for the Alpha prison course. I didn’t believe that I was worthy of forgiveness, but the Alpha sponsors were like love in action. I got past my guilt; I met Jesus at Alpha. But once “outside” and with no job, I was tempted again to risk drug trafficking. I had to regroup. I opened a Bible randomly, and my eyes landed on Matthew 6:26. “Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they?” I cling to that verse. Experiencing Alpha in prison led to the freedom that’s in my

heart today.

Yesenia Anderson Manhattan, Kansas

I saw billboards, bumper stickers and bus ads all over town. I kept seeing the words “Alpha: Is there more to life?” It made me wonder if I was missing something in my life. I was at rock bottom since my mom died a few years before. On the Alpha website, I found a course near my home. I had no expectations, except that the website promised a good meal and free child care. I believed in God, but wasn’t interested in getting involved with a church. Our hostess, Colleen, made me feel so welcome, and others quickly became my friends. I realized that church was not a place where I would be judged and found wanting, but a place of warmth and fellowship. I feel alive! I am loved and happier than ever. Alpha has shown me the way to peace and hope, and the love of God and Jesus fills me.

Donny Langford Minneapolis, Minnesota

I was spiritually dead, with no hope in life. I was addicted to methamphetamine and cocaine, and using alcohol and marijuana. At Alpha, I gradually realized that what they say is true—there is more to life, and that is hope in Jesus Christ. I felt acceptance, forgiveness and unconditional love, in spite of being high at the weekend away. It finally got through to me that regardless of where I was, people cared for me and loved me because of Jesus. I have been sober for four years and have a personal relationship with Jesus Christ. I love going to church and am planning to start a youth group in my home. What God has done for me just blows me away!

What the Press Says “A novel approach to Christian education that has been catching on nationwide.”

4

“Alpha is certainly a powerful medicine for a sickly old church.”

“Many claim Alpha has changed their lives and appear genuinely happier for the experience.”

“Alpha helps students navigate through Christianity.”

and Communities Bishop Keith Jenkins M.Ph. Minneapolis, Minnesota

Open Door Evangelistic World Ministries, is an urban, multicultural church. We’ve always been a diverse church, but since running Alpha, we’ve become even more diverse! People give their heart to Christ on Alpha, get baptized and join the church. Now they are musicians in our worship band, psalmists and worship leaders. It’s refreshing! People see all these new members from Alpha, and it both blesses them and challenges them to bring their friends and guests to Alpha. Alpha caused a whole paradigm shift in our church. People who once just sat around got active and got involved in the church and in soul winning. Alpha brought excitement to the church overall. Alpha works well in an urban setting and has been a blessing to our church.

Josephine Arispe Comstock, Michigan

From birth, I’ve lived a life of fear, abuse and isolation. As a young adult, I was at my lowest point; I ended up living in a motel with my daughter. The motel owners invited me to their church, but I was very reluctant. I knew I needed something in my life, but I had no intention of letting anyone “turn me into a Christian.” The owners knew I was struggling and that I needed food. They said, “We’ll feed you! Come!” So it was the free meal that got me to Alpha! I learned so much and gave my life to Christ. I see how the Lord is using what happened in my life. I bring people to Alpha because I can relate to what they’re going through. I feel God is leading me.

Rev. Scott Evans Ph.D. Burnt Hills, New York

About 10 years ago, my wife and I reached a crisis point in our lives and in our marriage. We found ourselves at an Episcopal church, where we took Alpha. We both gave our lives to Christ on Alpha. It wasn’t so much what Alpha finished, but what Alpha started. If it weren’t for Alpha, we wouldn’t have entered into growth groups and ministries, and we wouldn’t have entered into marriage counseling when we needed it. We wouldn’t have done the Every Man’s Battle group, and I wouldn’t have been ordained as a priest.

Bear Grylls

Alpha is a way to explore what we hunger after—meaning, intimacy and relationship – in a very non-pressured, non-judgmental environment. Host of “Man vs. Wild” on the Discovery Channel TM Voted 38th most influential man in America (Askmen.com) Alpha course participant, enthusiast and endorser

What Ministry Leaders Say Susan Lee, Senior Editor “It works. I can testify to that. Indeed it even worked for snobby old me.”

“Alpha ... uses modern methods to promote and explain Christian teachings around the world.”

“Alpha is a tool for mobilizing men and women to present the Gospel of Jesus Christ to the lost.” Joyce Meyer Joyce Meyer Ministries

“One of the most effective evangelism tools for the 21st century.”

foundation for continued growth MISSION

To make disciples of Jesus Christ from all walks of life. To transform our society, one life, one church and one community at a time.

VISION

20,000 churches by 2012 using Alpha to spread the wonderful news of Jesus Christ to millions of Americans.

STRATEGY

Creating more and better Alpha courses through prayer, people, purpose and provision

PEOPLE

Founded on relationships, people organized in local and functional teams is core to Alpha Regional Leadership Teams. These teams are on the frontline; scalable and effective units to increase the Alpha impact across the country. Lighthouse Churches demonstrate effective use of the Alpha course and provide credibility to establish new pastors. Alpha Coaches volunteer their time in counseling and training up new churches to run the Alpha course with the greatest possible impact.

PURPOSE Equipping every person and team with the tactics to build more and better Alpha courses. The Alpha Invitation strategy stirs faith and unifies churches to reach their communities. Specialty ministries (marriage, prison, campus, youth, multicultural, workplace, etc.) enable the church to bring the Gospel to a diverse culture beyond church walls. Training and preparation ensure proper application of best practices and core values to each Alpha course.

PROVISION of support from the Central Support Team (CST), whose aim it is to make the local and specialty teams as efficient and effective as possible in spreading the Gospel. The CST consists of gifted and highly motivated individuals providing marketing, finance, HR, IT and data management, publishing and fund developing, and overall unifying purpose and leadership.

Mike Housholder, Senior Pastor Lutheran Church of Hope West Des Moines, Iowa Alpha is one of the best leadership development tools we have found. We strongly encourage Alpha as the first step in learning or relearning about the Christian faith and the doorway into a life of discipleship. After the course, Alpha guests are invited to become helpers and then hosts so we can help hone their leadership gifts. Hope has grown from 2,200 to 9,000 in 10 years. Alpha now has momentum and is mainly kept alive through word of mouth. We leave it to people who have had their lives changed to invite their friends and family to the next course—and they do. Winter 2011 is our biggest course, with 450 people attending. Alpha teaches guests how to live out the Christian faith and serve others—people go deeper in their faith. People who come to Hope are intrigued, energized or challenged by what they see, and then many go to Alpha because that’s the first step. Now we look around and see hundreds of disciples of Jesus who are learning to listen and obey, and 6

inviting others to come and see what the Christian life is all about.

2010 STRATEgic initiatives review Alpha USA Publishing

Publication of The Breakthrough launched phase one of a strategy to increase exposure and awareness of Alpha-published products. The Breakthrough, a parable by Gerard Long, follows an everyday family through a dramatic faith encounter. The Breakthrough serves two purposes – to present a compelling case to a larger publisher that can help increase our distribution channels, and as a tool to help churches invite more guests to an Alpha course. Phase two is unfolding as Alpha International, along with Alpha USA, explores partnerships for sales, marketing and distribution agreements with large Christian and secular publishers.

Alpha in the Workplace—Workplace Faith Gatherings encourage business-

people to be effective witnesses for Christ in the workplace. • Eight events were held throughout the United States in 2010 featuring prominent speakers, such as Ken Blanchard, Ken Costa, Lou Giuliano, and Mark Linsz. • Survey results revealed successful outcomes: c. 1,300 businesspeople learned how to live out their faith in the workplace; c.650 have committed to take concrete steps to act on that faith; c.160 have completed Alpha training. • 2011 will see more focused events with key marketplace leaders and executives.

Global Alpha Training—(GAT)

Localized training delivered in a localized style. It has been designed to equip and empower people from churches that run and love Alpha courses to train others where there is a training need. • 20 GAT events were conducted in 2010, as churches from around the U.S. participated in mission trips to seed the Alpha course in cities and villages worldwide. • GAT Teams traveled to Nicaragua, Guatemala, Ukraine, Rwanda and other countries. • A GAT event results in the launch of 23 new courses – thus 500 new courses estimated.

Alpha Training to Achieve Course Excellence

• • •

During 2010, 3,551 pastors and church leaders attended Taste of Alpha events; 3,281 were trained on how to run the Alpha course at local Getting Started training events. 1,203 delegates, including 101 from Latin America, were trained at the two-day Americas Conference, which included seven main sessions and 52 breakout sessions. The 50-member speaking team was led by Nicky Gumbel. Monthly practitioner conference calls and webinars provide a regular interactive forum designed to meet course practitioners’ current needs.

The Alpha Invitation - Mobilizing churches and communities to work together across denominational lines in promoting and generating interest in Alpha Introductory events and the Alpha course. • Since 2007, more than 50,000 people have taken the Alpha course in 88 Alpha Invitation areas. • The Alpha Invitation in 2010 included 54 areas in 537 cities and included 979 churches of all denominations. • Alpha USA estimates that 29,370 people took an Alpha course as a result of the 2010 Alpha Invitation. 7

Alpha USA REgional Leadership Teams Margaret Cotton, Regional Director, South Carolina

I’ve been a Christian for many years, but my faith deepened through my experience on the Alpha course. My husband died after battling an aggressive brain tumor. I first took Alpha shortly after his death. My husband and I were both strong believers and sustained by our faith, but I questioned why God did not heal him. I carried guilt that perhaps he was not healed because my faith was not strong enough. On Alpha, the Holy Spirit weekend was a transforming time for me in dealing with both my grief and my guilt. I joined the Alpha team with 30 years’ experience in the training and media fields. As Regional Director of Alpha South Carolina, both areas of expertise serve me well in the many tasks and activities required for my position. While training churches and organizations on how to run the Alpha course effectively is a large part of my position, I also update my website, organize media campaigns, manage profit and loss statements, fund-raise and strategize to market the various Alpha courses in my region. We’ve seen exciting growth! In 2010, the number of churches running Alpha in South Carolina doubled, and I anticipate 2011 will continue that trend. Charleston was also the kick-off city for the 2010 Faith in the Workplace seminars, where more than 250 businesspeople learned about living out their faith at work. Several prisons had incredible results from running the course, now all of the prisons in South Carolina are starting Alpha as well! I am excited to concentrate on youth and campus Alpha programs this year. I feel that God is really on the move in South Carolina, and I feel privileged to do His work!

Prayer warriors all over the world support Alpha USA, from 1,000 Ugandans praying an hour each day, to the Alpha central office starting each day with sharing and prayer. Other prayer efforts include: weekly national prayer calls; response to prayer requests posted on the Alpha website and seasons of special prayer and fasting. Initiatives for 2011 include: • A monthly prayer call for the Alpha USA Board of Directors • Partnerships with major United States prayer ministries Teaching and ministry on the work of the holy spirit in the life of a christ follower The highlight of an Alpha course is often the weekend or day away to learn about the person of the Holy Spirit, what He does and how He empowers a person to be an effective witness for Christ. In 2011 we will be: • Encouraging churches that are running successful Alpha weekends to invite other local churches to participate in the weekend, thus learning best practices. • Seeking an underwriter, such as a national hotel chain, to sponsor Alpha weekends Lighthouse Churches: Key to Alpha’s Strategic Growth Plan Seventy-one senior pastors have committed their churches to becoming Lighthouse Churches (LH) for Alpha, and we hope to add 18 more in 2011. A LH church models success in running the Alpha course and is committed to sharing, encouraging, serving and giving away the Alpha course to others in its communities. In 2011 we will be: • Encouraging the LH pastors to share best practices and to pray for one another. • Providing support for each LH pastor, including scholarships to attend International Week at HTB in London Linking Alpha Courses to the Local Church There are hundreds of specialty Alpha courses going on across the United States (e.g., Campus, Prisons, Military, Seniors, Workplace), and in 2011 we plan to link each course to a local church. We are developing ‘Champions’ for each specialty ministry in every region and we will provide local churches with guidelines on how to support the specialty courses. Regional Leadership Teams: Facilitating the Growth of Alpha Regional Leadership Teams (RLT) are comprised of senior church pastors (including Lighthouse pastors), businesspeople and an Alpha Regional Director (RD). We are developing RLT’s in 53 regions and plan to initiate an additional 13 teams in 2011. The Alpha Central Support Team provides key services to the RLTs, including data management, web, marketing, event planning and other support. In 2011 the RD’s will focus on: • Developing Lighthouse Churches • Events: Taste of Alpha, Getting Started Training and Global Alpha Training • Alpha Coaches (volunteer Alpha representatives who start, nurture and support Alpha courses) • Developing The Alpha Invitations (a community wide, cross-denominational initiative to invite entire towns and cities to Alpha introductory dinners and subsequent Alpha courses in various churches in the area) • Regional fund development

Recently, Gerard partnered with Prison Fellowship Founder Chuck Colson in a groundbreaking video series for Christ followers. In October 2010, Alpha USA released Gerard’s first book, The Breakthrough. Developed in cooperation with worldrenowned business expert and bestselling author Ken Blanchard, The Breakthrough is a modern-day parable, using a simple and engaging story to communicate basic truths about God, religion, suffering and the afterlife. Gerard also recently started writing a blog on the topics of evangelization and church growth (http://blog.alphausa.org). Gerard’s next book, The Note, chronicles the tragic experience of his son’s death, and how his relationship with Christ helped him and his family through a period of pain and brokenness.

Brad Jeffery, Chicago Business Executive As vice president of a Chicago-based chemical company, I offered Alpha at Work as an option for my employees. The results were impressive. We’d tried every technique over the last 20 years— corporate retreats, open book management, flex-time programs. These are beneficial, but they aren’t sustainable if you don’t have the right attitude and culture. Alpha was a catalyst in setting the tone for a culture that expanded the hearts of employees, leading to community outreach efforts such as growing a garden for a local soup kitchen, starting a youth mentoring program and holding a picnic for a local orphanage. As you impact people’s hearts, it transforms into how they conduct themselves and helps them to be more satisfied at work. 10

Dear Friends,

Effective

For almost two decades now, Tina and I have been actively involved with Alpha. Our first participation was in 1993 when we were guests on a course at our local church, Holy Trinity Brompton, London. We had no idea what we were actually in for. But that course, at that time, created a platform for us to renew and grow in faith. And it was the foundation for some lifelong friendships that are built on the common ground of our relationships with God through Christ. It was a surprise blessing for us.

• 4,355 churches currently running Alpha courses • 200,000 guests on Alpha course in 2010 • 100,000 commitments to Christ in 2010*

Since then we’ve tried our best to bring friends to Alpha courses, help on courses, lead small groups and sometimes give a talk. We’ve had the great privilege of watching lots of friends experience complete transformation through Christ because of the Alpha course. I suppose we’re starting to get it: “Evangelism” isn’t just something for pastors, or for people with special talents as preachers or persuaders. Drawing men’s and women’s hearts into a new spiritual relationship is actually God’s work. And we can all be a part of it, and the Alpha course just something that makes that easy and effective.

• 53 Alpha USA Regional Leadership Teams • 30,000+ Alpha volunteers • $45,000,000 value of volunteer labor at min. wage ($7.25/ hour)

Over the course of 10 weeks, Alpha presents the Gospel message in a way in which people can ask their questions, express their doubts and fears and grapple with all that holds them back. They are surrounded by a loving community in this process (that’s the church, folks like you and me), which accepts them and commits to walking with them along the journey. It may sound simple, but that’s it. And God does the hard work. Thank you for your prayers and support and sacrifice for the sake of the Alpha ministries. So many people have invested time and money and real personal sacrifice to get Alpha to this point. We’re really grateful, and we’re really excited about what’s to come. With every blessing,
