Design is a process of mutual complementarities and enhancement between the physical world and the mental world. A good designer is one who can balance them two, facing the reality of the physical world, as well as being faithful to his mental one. This is my interpretation of design. In different growth stages, one might germinate different ideas towards different designs. And there is some interaction constantly existing between the world of designers and the world they live in. As we know, architecture is not merely a symbol of art, but also a reflection of human thoughts, emotions, and behaviors. I believe that, influenced by the rooted culture in their mind, people in the real-world setting might collect small details in daily life, such as handcrafts, writings, drawings and so forth, in order to diversify art, and this process contributes to the existence of multi-culture world nowadays. The information emerging naturally in human mind is the most direct reflection of characteristics. And architecture, as a specific represent of emotion, is also expressed in another language other than stone and wood, but people’s activities and behavior. And human, as the end-user of building, is the dominant force of architecture. Through architecture, emotion is solidified into coherent forms, functions, space, structure and the very fixture to touch. And finally all these merge into a completed building in the physical world. When I was an abecedarian of architecture in Shenzhen University, I had an idea that architecture is not the visualization of a certain style of or a certain period of history, but the process of metabolism. From the classical Vitruvian three qualities - firmitas, utilitas, venustas - in Ten Books of Architecture, to various philosophies nowadays, the cognition to architecture is updating constantly. And it has gradually blurred the territory of disciplines, such as the integration of landscaping and architecture, or the construction of an island as an entire piece of building. I regard it as an evolution of architecture. Along with the exploration of form and concept, the genius loci, the spirit of space is ever-changing in condition of the ever-changing demand from user groups of the ever-changing society. The organization of space and function might not always comply with the norms established via past experience and written down in textbooks as authority. Therefore, design is more of a way paved by designer towards the evolution of architecture. I started my architecture practice in 2011 as an intern in Mozhao Studio where I was later employed from 2012 till now, and where tremendous brand-new ideas were sown in my mind. The relationship between urbanism and society first came into my sight. I started to feel that focusing on sheer form and space would sometimes be superficial; designs from one’s own perspective without considering urbanism and society could be flimsy. During the time working in Mozhao, I’m deeply impressed by the sense of social obligation of being an architect. For most of the time, it seems merely like a design of a specific building, but actually not the case in reality. Architecture has its own social position according to different locations, contexts, benefit-groups, and might bring out different consequences. These results are not solely the reflection of an architect’s intention, but also the consideration of society as well as the response to the relationship between sociality and urbanism. The knit of emotion and design, the changing perception of space and function, the consideration of urbanism and sociality, all constitute the world in my mind, an imaginary world I want to realize in the external world. And I am able to find different fields of uncertainty waiting to be discovered in every new stage of my designing life. Designers always have their own idealism of their design and criticism to that of others. And I tend to insist that both idealism and criticism need to be utilized through design itself. This is another way paved towards the revise and improvement of my world. During the 7 years of my architecture career, fortunately I took part in some meaningful projects, including a big-budget project called Qingdao International Cruise Terminal Project, which has completed. For the first time I was faced with massive facilities and infrastructure issues accompanied with the monstrous modernization of China, which results in the limited time for us designers to perfect the design as much as possible. From the preliminary bidding process to the construction phase, I have been through a voyage of architecture implementation, gaining numerous experiences on the way, especially the integration of structure system and architecture. I am aware that this is only the beginning. New acquisition of architecture design would be gained through the study in a comprehensive and diverse environment. Your pioneering exploration of architecture attracts me most. With my experience and passion toward the architecture design, I would like to dedicate what I’ve learnt to your authoritative program, and make my own contribution to the architecture field. 4


Different lands , Same root

Concept

As the city links, "Port" construction should be featured with high customs clearance efficiency and comfortable customs clearance environment. More importantly, for the city and related area, it also symbolizes the connection and relation between two cities. Taking environment into consideration, as well as the cultural heritage and the historical origins between Shenzhen and Hongkong, the concept of "Different land,Same root" came into existence. The overall site design is based on the distribution of plant roots stretching from the surrounding mountains and greenwood. And they meet in Shenzhen River, filling the blank of greening in that area. Also it changes the customs clearance environment of the port, which shows that Shenzhen and Hongkong are same-rooted on the overall site planning.


The main building is integrated with the whole planning. Through the extension and development of the root system, two major constructions finally blend together, combining two into one, with clear functional areas and smooth efficient construction streamline. It has realized the purpose of separated inspection of two cities, while they are still connected. Besides, the main building also demonstrates the bloodrelated connection between Shenzhen and Hongkong. The internal space design is based on the elements of the roots and the aerial roots form. The abstraction of the root image is used for design of the interior walls and columns of the building, realizing the long span space structure. Also with the combination of indoor condition, the whole structure seems rise from the ground. The abstraction transformation image of the aerial roots is mainly used for the lighting and ventilation of architectural space. Through the morphological variation and the chimney effect of “aerial root", the indoor natural ventilation achieves good results. At the same time, the “aerial root” can also play a role of rainwater collection, achieving the goal of ecological architecture. Based on large span of the building, the top and the side elevation of the building design some windows according to the image of the stoma elements on plant roots, so as to maximize the effect of the introduction of natural light.


Historical and Cultural Thought

1.In the past, Shenzhen and Hongkong are in one street apart from each other, separated by a river. People always come and go in the congested port. 2.After the return of Hongkong, the establishment of Shenzhen Bay Cross Sea Bridge enables the convenient contacts between the two places and the people living there, achieving mutual development. 3.This year, the cultural exchange between Shenzhen and Hong Kong has gradually increased. A variety of exchange activities co-organized by Shenzhen and Hongkong are hosted in both places, which also provides an ideal platform for communication between residents of the two places.

The Introduction of the concept

Looking back into the past, we found that Shenzhen and Hongkong were growing up under the “same tree”, sharing the same root, inseparably connected with each other and supporting each other. There have been contradictory, but eventually they gradually grow together with mutual support and communication, and finally blend together——Different Lands, Same Root.

1.The court is divided into two parts by Shenzhen River. The surrounding greenbelts are also separated into discontinue segmentations by the court. At that time, Shenzhen and Hongkong are lack of contact. 2. According to the requirements of the related functions and streamline, the additional platform and the joint inspection building enable easy access to these two places. For the first time connection is built between these two places. 3. We introduce the element of “root” and extend the surrounding greenbelts to the base. This changes the situation in which the surrounding greenbelts ware segmented by the court, providing more rest platform and communication space for the workers. At the same time, it completes connection between the court and surrounding environment and echoes the concept. 4. We continue to deepen and extend the concept of design, presenting the overall design as root state. The base and environment reflects an interacted relationship and eventually blend into one architectural form. At this time, the blending relation between these two ports theme architecture is completed. The final architecture body is integrated and the connection from environment to court, and from court to the major architectural is completed, fully realizing the connection between these two places.

Analysis of internal space concept

1.The “grow out space” comes from the extraction and simplification of the space under the tree. 2.At the same time, the generation of the “aerial root” is extracted from the root element. 3.Integrated into the architecture to form the inner space 4.Responding to the concept, we carried out the amplification and element extraction of plant root morphology, finally obtained the "root" elements. 5.We built a parametric structure of the "root" with “stomas”, making the edge present a skin texture and openings. 6.It forms a major part of the whole architectural form, completing the combination of epidermis and concept. At the same time, indoor natural lighting and ventilation are achieved.

Underground complex

Underground complex, a product of modern city features and city renewal, it often carries long with a large-scale underground commercial center with shops, restaurant and recreation facilities. Shenzhen, as the special economic zone in China, with the rapid development of the city, the Metro Complex here is a typical example.

The Shennan Avenue to Shenzhen is like the Fifth Avenue to New York. This avenue has witnessed the development of Shenzhen City, being the most important city traffic line.

Culture building

The modern cultural architecture often exists as a closed type building without too many city exchanges. Due to the lack of exploration, People are not likely to stay for long time after finish visiting exhibitions or shows. In this project, according to three different types of City products, I combine the cultural elements with the underground complex. In my eyes, people as building users, their behavior is also a part of the architecture. As time moves on, the cultural underground complex will become a living culture building.

Shenzhen metro Line1, along Shennan Avenue goes through various developed regions of the city, which enables the diversified development of the underground complex,and realizes a more efficient, reasonable and comprehensive utilization of land resources. In this graduation design task, we need to transform the incomplete Metro facilities in one existent subway station, including the design of the surrounding city region. As for me, I chose the station of Shenzhen OCT, a place where culture and travel combines together.

Shenzhen OCT is a diversified city travel region funded by overseas Chinese, containing offices and residential areas from all levels. Unlike some ancient cities in China, Shenzhen doesn’t have a long history; but still, obvious diversified urban mechanism is presented here. In this zone, “Shenzhen OCT Station” is connected with “Window of the World Station”, as well as “Qiao Cheng Dong Station”, also surrounded by a majority of cultural construction, high-ranking hotels, city park, sightseeing line and other urban facilities.

Right above the subway there is a sightseeing road dividing the city into two parts which also known as the Shennan Avenue. Shenzhen government requires the broaden overground vision of the sightseeing road. Thus, for this city complex, the design should take urban infrastructure, subway and the surrounding environment into consideration.

There is some height difference between the south and north site, and the north is the hills type terrain, with a certain slope. But beneath the base is the OCT Station, which is simply a traffic station rather than a tourist attraction or cultural place. Therefore, in this project, I was about to connect the subway facility with the surrounding buildings outside, by using the height difference to create a partial lighting condition between them, and it can develop into an underground cultural complex. 14


Along the River During the Qingming Festival Along the River During the Qingming Festival, one of the ten famous paintings in China is attributed to Northern Song Dynasty artist Zhang Zeduan. This painting is now kept in the Forbidden City. The scroll is 25.5 centimeters in height and 5.25 meters long. It captures the daily life of people and the landscape of the capital, Bianjing from the Northern Song period. Successive scenes reveal the lifestyle of all levels of the society from rich to poor as well as different economic activities in rural areas and the city, and offer glimpses of period clothing and architecture, which is unique in the painting history home and abroad. In its 5.25 long scroll, there are 814 humans, 73 animals, 20 vehicles, 28 boats, as well as distinctive houses, bridges and towers, symbolizing the feature of buildings in Song Dynasty. This painting uses two-dimensional expression mode to depict the story at that time. And in my project design, I choose “City Scroll�, a four-dimensional architecture way to record the stories happen in the city.

The nearly vertical "Scroll" creates a space for some lack of exercise white-collars to do some extreme climbing.

There is an artistic staircase at the end of the scroll leading to tourist spots like the Stone Museum, and Splendid China. Different scroll parts are formed by different segmentations of architecture block, the architecture space varies according to the scroll order, which is not merely a change on the vision of the architecture, but also the change in the equipped facilities and the architecture itself.

Through this process, an "urban living museum" with its own building feature comes into existence. Building is accompanied by the use and activity of human existence. But it is something more than a simple building's existence. Together with human behavior and activities, they can also be a part of architectural language in this construction order, as well as a part of "the city scroll".

By subway transformation, more users would visit the "urban living museum", at the same time, the surrounding cultural buildings would be linked together to form a comprehensive space, including He Xiangning Museum(painting and sculpture), OCT Art Museum(painting and sculpture), Huaxia Arts Centre (Acting) and Stone Museum(history). On the other hand, I connect the underground cultural performing space and the exit of subway station together, so that the street performer can enjoy their performance here, while others would feel touched when they see the performance.

Light Planting IVA competition Energy

Energy is a foundation of human living and development. Every critical progress of civilization would not be realized without energy consumption. Moreover, the better utilization of energy without doubt benefits the global economic and social development.

Pollution

Human's production and energy use always comes with pollution. With the use of coal and oil, massive carbon dioxide, sulfide, nitrogen oxide is released into the atmosphere, at the same time, organic pollutant is left in our environment. And these pollutants lead to environmental problems, such as acid rain and green house effect. Besides, it also does harm on the ecological balance.

Purpose

In this program, I use bio energy and solar energy in a community space, aiming at coming up with clean energy that causes least pollution. Meanwhile, with the changing of the process, light will bring various space effects in this work.



Situation

The site include a small square, narrow gloomy space and indoors space.The square is over-supply of light. The narrow space is lack of light. And the indoors space needs different light in different time.The light in those space is not suitable or changeable for people and different function. So the use of the space is left to be maximize.

Over-supply of sunlight

Most of squares in Shenzhen. The sunlight is over-supply and thetemperature is too hot for people’s SUN ENERGY stay. Itis a shame that a public square cannot attract people to come. So it is double-waste of the sunlight energy and space.

Algae

Holland designer Mike Thomsen uses chloroplast from algae cells to obtain current to drive the light bulb. Raton 50% has50%a groundbreaking design, under 100% the help of a lamp with a diameter of only 30 Nano electrode and other devices, the algae cells can produce 1.2pA current. In addition, the product also has a light sensor, being able to adjust the generated current, leaving enough energy for the survival of algae. Designers said that the algae also needs to be taken care of. The lamp is lighted by LED, which can improve energy utilization efficiency especially in the blackout and other natural disaster. 27

Light Planting Can we plant the light? Even farm it? We choose the algae as the media. We put the algae in glass tube. Advantages of the algae: 1.Grow anywhere there is sunlight 2.Reproduce far more quickly than crop plants 3.No need to use drinking water 4.No harmful to earth as bio-fuel 5.Much higher bio-chemical energy transfer efficiency Algae can absorb the sunlight energy. The intensity of algae in the glass tube can change the bright and dark of sunlight going through while absorb the sunlight energy.The color of algae in the glass tube can change the shadow of sunlight. We want to realize the concept of “plant light� combining ALGAE,and ARCHITECTURE, since we can satisfy the need for both sunlight energy and the light for different functional space.

Proposal

We install glass tube covering the whole square and a glass tube wall to research light. When there are no algae in the glass tube, the sunlight covers the whole outdoor square.And the square is outdoors. When there is a little algae, the intensity of sunlight went through will be change. And the shadow start to form space. The relationship of in and out is interact with different activity and space. The color and intensity of algae in glass tube is controlled by filter.The more algae we add, the more sunlight energy can be absorbed,while the less sunlight goes through. In addition, we want to add different color of gene into the algae, so that the algae can change the shadow’s color of the sunlight which can make the space below more wonderful. In that way, we can change space or living environment with changeable light both in color and intensity.For space, the algae can absorb thecarbon and release oxygen. Besides, it can also help to cool down the air temperature in summer without using drinking water. During night without light. The filter adds fluorescent gene algae (energy from sunlight) into the glass tube, and the tube becomes a light pipe----- realizing the thought of storing sunlight energy for necessary usage and transporting it from one place to another.

Nanning Affordable Housing Competition,1st Prize China Affordable housing The urbanization in China cannot be separated from mature and synchronized development, construction, management, planning and design of the Low-income Housing Project. The fast pace of urbanization and lagging construction of low-income housing have exposed many problems, such as high prices, traffic jams, newly built town turning into "sleeping town". Worse still, disadvantaged group in the city lacks an optimistic attitude towards life, young people lose their ambition and dreams, and people feel less happy than they used to. The construction of China low-income housing should not only be one of the political tasks or some gorgeous indicator. Instead, more practical concern about suitable living for the certain group is needed. Low-income housing is not only a tool to solve living problem, but also a reflection of family relationship, social relations between people, and the relationship between life and work.


Yu couple, 65 years old, 62 years old, illiterate, Feeding livestock for a living. The original pig shed collapsed, and a family of 8 people crowd in a dilapidated place. The life is hard. Hope the government will provide subsidies to maintain their livelihood.

In this location of Nanning city edge, the low-income housing exploration projects is to give targeted response to the life inconvenience and the lack of design brought by the existing construction of low-income housing. Taking the following things into consideration, the resources around the base including the industrial zone and logistics zone, as well as the remote location of this base, the target group would be the return and relocation households, and Internet emerging industry entrepreneurs. The neighborhood of the surrounding resources develops into an organic whole, relying on each other. The commercial area on the ground floor of the low-income housing provides job opportunities for the relocation group, which at the same time lowers the living expanse for new entrepreneurs and people living around. On the other hand, the cooperation between the emerging industry entrepreneurs, and the industrial and logistics zone will give a push to the regional industrial development. And the abundance of the underlying spatial structure, as well as the functional complex brings diversity and vitality for the neighborhood. The low-income housing not only solves the housing problem, but also meets the need for work, leisure and entertainment, communication and physical fitness. More importantly, through community construction, the disadvantaged groups feel easier to woven into the city life, and create value for the city.

Problems

There are massive problems of systematic affordable housing.And most of them are not concentrated in ruquirements of sepcific people's living and working.On the other way,during urbanization ,land are expropriated by government,and relocated household become another important problem.As vulnerable groups,however,they merely obtained a simple indemnity or relocated in a strange and remote house without considering their habits and skills.

There are different types of material sales in the internal market, mainly emphasizing on agriculture products. This setting is suitable to correspond with the relocation households’ living habits and working skills, and provides them with sales channels for different materials output. 51

As the core communication platform for the whole community, the roof of public space is arranged between relocation households and emerging entrepreneurs, providing with the runway, basketball field, elevated open space, roof garden and other various fields and recreation spaces. Households can gain a sense of belonging by doing some farming work; emerging business personnel can engage in physical exercise and have some exchanges after the busy work, promoting mutual understanding, as well as physical and mental health for both the development of personnel and enterprise; It also provides opportunities for communication between relocation households and entrepreneurship personnel, in order to increase mutual connection and form a interactive and dynamic community.

REFERENCE-Marseille Apartment

Marseille apartment is an 18-floor building with a length of 165 meters, width of 24 meters, and height of 56 meters. There are 23 kinds of different living units, a total of 337 households. The bottom is elevated, the top floor for kindergarten, the roof platform for public activities, a children playground, a small swimming pool, gym and etc. Le Corbusie imagined the roof garden as a vessel sailing in the sea of the deck, for visitors to enjoy the beautiful scenery of the skyline, and fun outdoor games and activities. 54


Structure as Space

Qingdao Cruises Terminal,construction completed The Qingdao Cruise Passenger Transportation Centre Project is the third project I took part in since I joined CCDI. It is a practical construction project. I participated in the whole process, from bidding, preliminary design to construction design.In the project, I am mainly responsible for the roof design and structure design.In this process, I get a better understanding that a building is constructed from concept to design, from design to details and finally from details to the significance it holds. In this process, the structure design is the most complicated part. No matter for the appearance or the structure form of the building, the beauty of the building structure brings extraordinary significance to the achievement of traffic building. This significance does not simply appeal itself on the structure, but also on the construction space.

Force and Form

Force is the key calculated index and the direction of the structure. Form is the important standard of art and space display. When force and form are both achieved,structure force and architectural esthetics come into reality. Different stress system produces different structure form which varies with the construction space. This reaches the standard of construction esthetics and standard of reasonable architecture stress at the same time.



Terminal situation In this project, the main building is made of steel reinforced concrete. Roof uses the steel structure. Concrete structure can be divided into three floors. The first floor is for the overhead parking lot. The second floor is mainly for entrance functional area, and the third floor is mostly used for open space. We need to achieve the huge span of the space form in the steel structure part to meet the need of crowded situation for the traffic building. In addition, we need to ensure the rationality of the whole structure stress, and meet the requirement of the architecture function and space.

The main function of the passenger transportation center is centralized. The left side is for the plant stripe and seaview platform. The first floor is for the immigration hall and parking lot.

Skylight The area of passenger hall is relatively large, so the central lighting should rely on lighting skylight.

Viewing sight The passenger transportation hall is surrounded by the sea on both sides and enjoys a pleasant view of the sea environment. Thus we use glass-curtain wall on both sides to widen the vision environment.

Portal frame In order to guarantee a relatively broad space for the building and meets the requirements of Party A, we use the portal-frame force system.

Swinging column In the middle of this portal-frame, we choose to use learning column to balance the longitudinal force from both sides of the building.

Through a series of model and stress comparison, we confirm the stress angle which achieves the dimensional angle balance among their angles.

Self-balancing More attention should be drawn to the roof is the fact that we ensure the angle balance and achieve the self-balance without the wind loads at the same time.

The whole structure stress In the project, in order to guarantee the achievement and rationality of the structure stress, we choose to apply the modulus means to achieve the overall stress and architectural form of the building. In this process, because of the large span, we chose to apply both rigid way and flexible way of the stress joint, the rigid connection and hinged connection. This helps the stress transferring towards different points, to deliver and release through different nodes.

Roof The roof is composed of two different unit systems, of which the small side is a half -outdoor space and the large side is the roof of the joint inspection hall.

Basic module The Roof, arraying of the module spanning every 18 meters, forms the steel structure of 17 units and bilateral closing unit.

Stress directions In certain angle, the main stress direction is penetrating from the middle to both side of the building. This is also the consequence of portal frame.

Hinge joint There are three hinge joints of the roof, middle learning column and the ends of the column in the bottom of the building. This contributes to the release of the lateral force of the building.

Rigid connection Due to the application of the portal frame, we need to remove most of the balance force of the roof to both sides of the building. Therefore, the bilateral part of the building applies thick rigid connection. 58


Unit mechanical logic The Unit logic of the steel structure under stress conducts two stress comparisons, named X type structural unit and T type structural unit, in two different ways according to different condition of the steel structure system. For these two stress body, we firstly conducted the structural system design on the overall stress condition of the building, and then a form structure analysis on the stress condition of the nodes of the units to achieve reasonable stress condition.

Structure unit X Structural stress unit X staggers the construction unit well and generates a good stress direction. This results from the fact that the angles between units transfer the gravity of part of the roof into horizontal. In this way, the entirety remain horizontal.

Structure unit T The building unit body is arranged with a relatively simple way by the force of the structure unit T, making the vertical force subjected by each unit reach the ground only along two directions. In this way, the vision of the faรงade could be well extended. Althouth this structure unit people can enjoy a better landscape, compared to the X tructure unit, the force stability is relatively lower.

Rigid conncetion design The nodes of rigid connection of the building is key part of the project. In this process, we cooperated and calculated with structural profession. And we applied parametric design to change the nodes and rob piece through different stress condition of the structure. It guarantees the reasonable structure stress, as well as the beauty of structural form it generates. Thus, it brings rich changes to the architectural space.

Supplement Between the physical and mental world

In my opinion, the connection between life and design is like the relationship between object and shadow. Designer acts as a light that connects two things together, and different lights are likely to create different shapes of shadows. The designer’s habit and interest become an important part to support his design and idea.If all the inspiration comes from the architecture itself, there might be no advantageous evolution and progress that lead construction industry to a new era.



Drawing From my perspective, drawing is an effective method of exploring the reality and imagination. During the study in university, I realized that all artists in the world are searching the boundary of their art work between the physical and mental world. Thus, I try my best to reach the reality as much as I can through freehand sketching.
