Design is a process in which one can benefit from the actual world to build up his own, and uses the internal potential from his own one as return to improve the actual world. With one eye watching the present world and the other observing his own one, a good designer regularly keeps an eye on both.

LOCATION: QINGDAO, SHANDONG PROVINCE, CHINA The Qingdao Cruise Passenger Transportation Centre Project is the third project I took part in since I joined CCDI. It is a practical construction project.I participated in the whole process, from bidding, preliminary design to construction design. In the project, I am mainly responsible for the roof design and structure design. In this process, I get a better understanding that a building is constructed from concept to design, from design to details and finally from details to the significance it holds. In this process, the structure design is the most complicated part. No matter for the appearance or the structure form of the building, the beauty of the building structure brings extraordinary significance to the achievement of traffic building. This significance does not simply appeal itself on the structure, but also on the construction space. Force and Form Force is the key calculated index and the direction of the structure. Form is the important standard of art and space display. When force and form are both achieved, structure force and architectural esthetics come into reality. Different stress system produces different structure form which varies with the construction space. This reaches the standard of construction esthetics and standard of reasonable architecture stress at the same time.

Terminal situation In this project, the main building is made of steel reinforced concrete. Roof uses the steel structure. Concrete structure can be divided into three floors. The first floor is for the overhead parking lot. The second floor is mainly for entrance functional area, and the third floor is mostly used for open space. We need to achieve the huge span of the space form in the steel structure part to meet the need of crowded situation for the traffic building. In addition, we need to ensure the rationality of the whole structure stress, and meet the requirement of the architecture function and space.

Terminal function

Viewing Platform

Immigration Hall

The main function of the passenger transportation center is centralized. The left side is for the plant stripe and sea-view platform. The first floor is for the immigration hall and parking lot.

Skylight The area of passenger hall is relatively large, so the central lighting should rely on lighting skylight.

Viewing sight The passenger transportation hall is surrounded by the sea on both sides and enjoys a pleasant view of the sea environment. Thus we use glass-curtain wall on both sides to widen the vision environment.

33m

Terminal size

65m

The north side of the hall spans about 65m and the south spans about 33m.

Portal frame In order to guarantee a relatively broad space for the building and meets the requirements of Party A, we use the portalframe force system.

Swinging column In the middle of this portal-frame, we choose to use learning column to balance the longitudinal force from both sides of the building.

Angle-balancing Through a series of model and stress comparison, we confirm the stress angle which achieves the dimensional angle balance among their angles.

Self-balancing More attention should be drawn to the roof is the fact that we ensure the angle balance and achieve the self-balance without the wind loads at the same time.

10

The whole structure stress In the project, in order to guarantee the achievement and rationality of the structure stress, we choose to apply the modulus means to achieve the overall stress and architectural form of the building. In this process, because of the large span, we chose to apply both rigid way and flexible way of the stress joint, the rigid connection and hinged connection. This helps the stress transferring towards different points, to deliver and release through different nodes.

Roof The roof is composed of two different unit systems, of which the small side is a half -outdoor space and the large side is the roof of the joint inspection hall.

Basic module The Roof, arraying of the module spanning every 18 meters, forms the steel structure of 17 units and bilateral closing unit.

Stress directions In certain angle, the main stress direction is penetrating from the middle to both side of the building. This is also the consequence of portal frame.

Hinge joint There are three hinge joints of the roof, middle learning column and the ends of the column in the bottom of the building. This contributes to the release of the lateral force of the building.

Rigid connection Due to the application of the portal frame, we need to remove most of the balance force of the roof to both sides of the building. Therefore, the bilateral part of the building applies thick rigid connection.

11

Unit mechanical logic The Unit logic of the steel structure under stress conducts two stress comparisons, named X type structural unit and T type structural unit, in two different ways according to different condition of the steel structure system. For these two stress body, we firstly conducted the structural system design on the overall stress condition of the building, and then a form structure analysis on the stress condition of the nodes of the units to achieve reasonable stress condition.

Structure unit X Structural stress unit X staggers the construction unit well and generates a good stress direction. This results from the fact that the angles between units transfer the gravity of part of the roof into horizontal. In this way, the entirety remain horizontal.

Structure unit T The building unit body is arranged with a relatively simple way by the force of the structure unit T, making the vertical force subjected by each unit reach the ground only along two directions. In this way, the vision of the faรงade could be well extended. Althouth this structure unit people can enjoy a better landscape, compared to the X tructure unit, the force stability is relatively lower.

12

Rigid conncetion design The nodes of rigid connection of the building is key part of the project. In this process, we cooperated and calculated with structural profession. And we applied parametric design to change the nodes and rob piece through different stress condition of the structure. It guarantees the reasonable structure stress, as well as the beauty of structural form it generates. Thus, it brings rich changes to the architectural space.

2012 Hongkong Car Park Tower Competition, Studio Work, Mozhao Studio,1st Prize LOCATION: JIULONG, HONGKONG , CHINA Based on the public attitude, we form a clearer stand about ‘iconic’. Why don’t we use ‘public’ to express ‘iconic’? More than an icon for height or form, the car park tower could be an icon for publicity standing on the free land of Hong Kong. Therefore, another public platform is created on top of the tower. It opens various events such as concerts, art exhibitions, fashion shows, ceremonies dinners, cinematic projections, etc. This arrangement differs the parking tower from other commercial or private high-rises whose tops are usually occupied by membership clubs or luxury catering. Besides, the top structures of the parking tower are covered by solar panels for renewable energy on site. When night comes, walking on the Tsim Sha Tsui Promenade, people will be attracted by the fascinating scenes far from the top of the parking tower. The eye-catching space is a best setting for the city to show its public lives. To be more human centered and more public, is to be more civilized. This is the standard in evaluating urban planning or architecture design practices. This also works as the basic principle leading our design of the car park tower. We are glad to see that, with our work, life gets more fun, and city get more energy. The car park tower stands as the center of Central, and it also stands at the center of citizenship.

Composition Structure The main structure is composed of four spiral cores. They parallel to each other three-dimensionally. From the top to the bottom, the spirals have their ratio getting smaller. When touching the ground, the four cores get perpendicular to the ground. Also, the stacked slabs and raw columns with variation at the bottom of the tower are responding to the surrounding. The complete form is logically and visually dynamic.

Fully Automated Parking Fully automated parking is well known for high-efficiency and space-saving. However, the advantages become the constraint for space design and experience. The fully automated parking lot always gives an impression of monotonous forms rather than forms with the underlying mechanical beauty which hasn’t been explored. In our scheme, fully automated parking is above the top multi-functional area, forming an 80-meter high outdoor atrium. Cars are transported from the ground floor to parking spots by the spiral car-lifts and the horizontal rails. The atrium which varies with movement of mechanism of the fully automated parking provides the multi-functional area distinctive atmosphere. Meanwhile, the multi-functional area with spectacular sea view also provides comfortable waiting area for people who pick up cars. 25

On the boundary of a City 2013 Nanning Affordable Housing Competition,Team Work,Mozhao Studio, 1st Prize,Team leader LOCATION: NANING, GUANXI PROVINCE, CHINA China Affordable housing The urbanization in China cannot be separated from mature and synchronized development, construction, management, planning and design of the Low-income Housing Project. The fast pace of urbanization and lagging construction of low-income housing have exposed many problems, such as high prices, traffic jams, newly built town turning into "sleeping town". Worse still, disadvantaged group in the city lacks an optimistic attitude towards life, young people lose their ambition and dreams, and people feel less happy than they used to. The construction of China low-income housing should not only be one of the political tasks or some gorgeous indicator. Instead, more practical concern about suitable living for the certain group is needed. Low-income housing is not only a tool to solve living problem, but also a reflection of family relationship, social relations between people, and the relationship between life and work.

Yu couple, 65 years old, 62 years old, illiterate, Feeding livestock for a living. The original pig shed collapsed, and a family of 8 people crowd in a dilapidated place. The life is hard. Hope the government will provide subsidies to maintain their livelihood. 32

In this location of Nanning city edge, the low-income housing exploration projects is to give targeted response to the life inconvenience and the lack of design brought by the existing construction of low-income housing. Taking the following things into consideration, the resources around the base including the industrial zone and logistics zone, as well as the remote location of this base, the target group would be the return and relocation households, and Internet emerging industry entrepreneurs. The neighborhood of the surrounding resources develops into an organic whole, relying on each other. The commercial area on the ground floor of the low-income housing provides job opportunities for the relocation group, which at the same time lowers the living expanse for new entrepreneurs and people living around. On the other hand, the cooper-ation between the emerging industry entrepreneurs, and the industrial and logistics zone will give a push to the regional industrial development. And the abundance of the underlying spatial structure, as well as the functional complex brings diversity and vitality for the neighborhood. The low-income housing not only solves the housing problem, but also meets the need for work, leisure and entertainment, communication and physical fitness. More importantly, through community construction, the disadvantaged groups feel easier to woven into the city life, and create value for the city.

1. R e l o c a t i o n H o u s e h o l d s a n d t h e surrounding areas are closely linked. In the village there is a large part of young people working in the industrial areas, since the logistics area and industrial zone require cheap labor. At the same time households need to make money to support the family. Therefore, they are inseparable.

Logistics Park

The under safeguard group, as well as the site condition determine the feature of target users. The relocation households around the site are part of the under safeguard group. Meanwhile, the remote location of the base decided that target user should make better use of the closely connected community formed by logistics zone, industrial park and relocation household. In that way, the emerging industry entrepreneurs become another group of target user.

Taking into account the surrounding geographical and resources conditions, we chose the relocation households and the emerging industry entrepreneurs as the target users of the low-income housing project. During the road construction, some residents become relocation households, and they provide the emerging industry entrepreneurs with living service, such as vegetables and meat from their small business and fields. At the same time, logistics and industrial zones around provide supply, logistics and processing services for emerging industry entrepreneurs. The relocation household and emerging industry entrepreneurs depend on each other, combined perfectly with the surrounding resources.

Flexibility & Standardization

Semi enclosure and Stack

8100

Application of standardization is the foundation to realize the rapid mass construction, also is the most effective method to decrease the cost. In addition, standardization does not mean singleness. Actually it can also cope with flexibility. According to the research of residential parking, module, community facilities and other functions, we chose the 8.1m*8.1m module. In the vertical direction, different functional groups formed two types: Semi-enclosed, stacking and knitting.

Semi-enclosed & Stacking The Semi-enclosed & Stacking type has created a flexible community space with distinct apartment layout combination modes. Based on the living and entrepreneurship of emerging industry entrepreneurs, the residential living provides a flexible combination (up, down, left and right), also provide communication place for residents.

Semi-enclosed Semi enclosed space provide people with a relatively intimate communication place, meeting the needs for housing ventilation and lighting at the same time, as well as being a better combination of residence and landscape.

Stacking According to multiple 32m 2 , the combination of stacking apartment l a y o u t v a r i e s f r o m e a c h o t h e r, which provides an effective flexibility development condition for apartment layout. Hybrid apartment layout for different users can be realized through different combinations of apartment layout. Thus, it is beneficial for different small private network business development since it provides the corresponding living function.

The crisscross public space network activates the vitality of the community. Different scales of courtyard, street and overhead space are defined as three different kinds of places: the public, semi-public and private.

The first floor public garden and the commercial space The first floor public garden provides an environmental friendly living place and sound ecological exchange places for residents. According to different opening up grades, the yard brings the public different opening degrees and produces a versatile living space. 42

Different lands , Same root 2012 Liantang/Boundary Control Point Passenger Terminal Building International Competition Concept Design,1st Prize,Teamwork -Awarded by vice mayor Ruifeng Li of Shenzhen in Hong Kong convention and exhibition center, -See Link: http://www.info.gov.hk/gia/general/201109/01/P201109010111.htm

Excellent Contribution of Shenzhen & Hong Kong Lifestyle Award

LOCATION: SHENZHEN & HONGKONG, GUANGDONG PROVINCE, CHINA Concept As the city links, "Port" construction should be featured with high customs clearance efficiency and comfortable customs clearance environment. More importantly, for the city and related area, it also symbolizes the connection and relation between two cities. Taking environment into consideration, as well as the cultural heritage and the historical origins between Shenzhen and Hongkong, the concept of "Different land,Same root" came into existence. The overall site design is based on the distribution of plant roots stretching from the surrounding mountains and greenwood. And they meet in Shenzhen River, filling the blank of greening in that area. Also it changes the customs clearance environment of the port, which shows that Shenzhen and Hongkong are same-rooted on the overall site planning.

46

The main building is integrated with the whole planning. Through the extension and development of the root system, two major constructions finally blend together, combining two into one, with clear functional areas and smooth efficient construction streamline. It has realized the purpose of separated inspection of two cities, while they are still connected. Besides, the main building also demonstrates the blood-related connection between Shenzhen and Hongkong. The internal space design is based on the elements of the roots and the aerial roots form. The abstraction of the root image is used for design of the interior walls and columns of the building, realizing the long span space structure. Also with the combination of indoor condition, the whole structure seems rise from the ground. The abstraction transformation image of the aerial roots is mainly used for the lighting and ventilation of architectural space. Through the morphological variation and the chimney effect of “aerial root", the indoor natural ventilation achieves good results. At the same time, the “aerial root” can also play a role of rainwater collection, achieving the goal of ecological architecture. Based on large span of the building, the top and the side elevation of the building design some windows according to the image of the stoma elements on plant roots, so as to maximize the effect of the introduction of natural light. 47

Historical and Cultural Thought 1.In the past, Shenzhen and Hongkong are in one street apart from each other, separated by a river. People always come and go in the congested port. 2.After the return of Hongkong, the establishment of Shenzhen Bay Cross Sea Bridge enables the convenient contacts between the two places and the people living there, achieving mutual development. 3.This year, the cultural exchange between Shenzhen and Hong Kong has gradually increased. A variety of exchange activities co-organized by Shenzhen and Hongkong are hosted in both places, which also provides an ideal platform for communication between residents of the two places.

The Introduction of the concept Looking back into the past, we found that Shenzhen and Hongkong were growing up under the “same tree”, sharing the same root, inseparably connected with each other and supporting each other. There have been contradictory, but eventually they gradually grow together with mutual support and communication, and finally blend together——Different Lands, Same Root.

1.The court is divided into two parts by Shenzhen River. The surrounding greenbelts are also separated into discontinue segmentations by the court. At that time, Shenzhen and Hongkong are lack of contact. 2. According to the requirements of the related functions and streamline, the additional platform and the joint inspection building enable easy access to these two places. For the first time connection is built between these two places. 3. We introduce the element of “root” and extend the surrounding greenbelts to the base. This changes the situation in which the surrounding greenbelts ware segmented by the court, providing more rest platform and communication space for the workers. At the same time, it completes connection between the court and surrounding environment and echoes the concept. 4. We continue to deepen and extend the concept of design, presenting the overall design as root state. The base and environment reflects an interacted relationship and eventually blend into one architectural form. At this time, the blending relation between these two ports theme architecture is completed. The final architecture body is integrated and the connection from environment to court, and from court to the major architectural is completed, fully realizing the connection between these two places.

Internal space concept 1.The “grow out space” comes from the extraction and simplification of the space under the tree. 2.At the same time, the generation of the “aerial root” is extracted from the root element. 3.Integrated into the architecture to form the inner space 4.Responding to the concept, we carried out the amplification and element extraction of plant root morphology, finally obtained the "root" elements. 5.We built a parametric structure of the "root" with “stomas”, making the edge present a skin texture and openings. 6.It forms a major part of the whole architectural form, completing the combination of epidermis and concept. At the same time, indoor natural lighting and ventilation are achieved.

2012 Graduation Project ,The Metro Facilities Design, Architecture Studio, Individual LOCATION: SHENZHEN, GUANGDONG PROVINCE, CHINA Underground complex Underground complex, a product of modern city features and city renewal, it often carries long with a large-scale underground commercial center with shops, restaurant and recreation facilities. Shenzhen, as the special economic zone in China, with the rapid development of the city, the Metro Complex here is a typical example.

Shennan Dadao The Shennan Avenue to Shenzhen is like the Fifth Avenue to New York. This avenue has witnessed the development of Shenzhen City, being the most important city traffic line.

Culture building The modern cultural architecture often exists as a closed type building without too many city exchanges. Due to the lack of exploration, People are not likely to stay for long time after finish visiting exhibitions or shows. In this project, according to three different types of City products, I combine the cultural elements with the underground complex. In my eyes, people as building users, their behavior is also a part of the architecture. As time moves on, the cultural underground complex will become a living culture building.

52

53

Three-dimension Figures standing up on the ground are called sculpture. Through window of the scroll wall, we can see people's activities and behavior change as time goes by.

Two-dimension

Just as people in a painting, they are plane.

Four-dimension

With the scroll rolling,we can see it change into a wall,a floor or a ceiling. Through a window of the scroll wall,we can see people's activities and behavior, and they are different ,with time going on. ENTRANCE The scroll over ground part becomes

STUDIO In this semi-outdoor condition,

STAIRS TECKNICAL CLIMB

The nearly vertical "Scroll" creates a space for some lack of exercise whitecollars to do some extreme climbing.

different levels of the scroll create different levels of office space, which provides a unique working environment for artists in OCT culture area.

There is an artistic staircase at the end of the scroll leading to tourist spots like the Stone Museum, and Splendid China. Different scroll parts are formed by different segmentations of architecture block, the architecture space varies according to the scroll order, which is not merely a change on the vision of the architecture, but also the change in the equipped facilities and the architecture itself.

By subway transformation, more users would visit the "urban living museum", at the same time, the surrounding cultural buildings would be linked together to form a comprehensive space, including He Xiangning Museum(painting and sculpture), OCT Art Museum(painting and sculpture), Huaxia Arts Centre (Acting) and Stone Museum(history). On the other hand, I connect the underground cultural performing space and the exit of subway station together, so that the street performer can enjoy their performance here, while others would feel touched when they see the performance.

Community-Transit Oriented Development 2016 Reshaping the Poughkeepsie Waterfront Public through Breaking the Boundary, Teamwork, Urban Studio II, GSAPP LOCATION: POUGHKEEPSIE, NEW YORK STATE, UNITED STATES After constructions of infrastructure such as highway and railroads, transportation along the Hudson Valley became an important asset in the Northeast region, and Transit Oriented Development (TOD) has been one of the major movements that provides array of regional benefit. Since the rise of the development, visual range and accessibility to the waterfront along the Hudson river has been declining and Poughkeepsie is part of this controversy which has an ongoing proposal by the officials on the Poughkeepsie waterfront, Poughkeepsie Waterfront Redevelopment Plan. The redevelopment plan, claiming waterfront vacant lots after failures of urban renewal, is part of the TOD proposed by the city of Poughkeepsie, Federal Government, and the MTA to enliven Hudson Valley regional transportation system and economically benefit from the adjacent waterfront. The waterfront itself having great potential of valuable resource which should truly serve the Poughkeepsie community, yet, promotes the waterfront into a deeper segregation from the city without any valuable link with the waterfront and the inner city. This project, Community-Transit Oriented Development, proposes to relocate the waterfront redevelopment such as commerce, residence, and mixed-use to the Main Street in addition to a new shallow waterway along the street which will not only enliven the connection between the waterfront and the city, but also bring back the potential of land value into the neighborhood. At the same time, the waterfront and main street will seek to spread to the whole Poughkeepsie region by transforming into a redesigned urban fabric in Poughkeepsie to reinforce the Main Street and downtown to become a meaningful redevelopment for the Poughkeepsie community.

Reviving a Creek Economy 2017 A PLace of Migrants/Pilgrims/Future,Urban Studio III, Team Work, GSAPP LOCATION: HORWAH, WEST BENGAL, INDIA Kolkata-Howrah Station area thrived during the 1800s as the crossroad of two Central India Government Transportation Systems, the Kolkata Port Trust and the South Eastern Railway. These two organizations own most land along the west bank of the Hooghly River. The area has dilapidated since the relocation of the port away from it, since the Port Land continues to to be owned by the Central India Government and is not accessible for development by local players. Besides the large number of pilgrims and tourists, Howrah Station also brings to Kolkata a large number of migrants who work and live temporarily in this area, transforming the place into a labor hub. This project focuses on their living conditions including housing poverty, water poverty and other basic needs such as public education for kids and reliable health care. These urgent problems must be addressed to catalyze further development. The opportunities available on the riverfront can undoubtedly make this possible. This project focuses on migrants, and proposes a water network to support their diverse daily lives and satisfy their spiritual needs. This integrated water network proposes reviving the historical creek system that existed in this area till 1857. This will transform the underused transportation and old industrial infrastructure into a mix-used and multi-functioned integrated community for both migrants and local residents. The revived creeks will also link the lower lying area behind the river front to Hooghly again , restoring the natural pattern that enabled the monsoon rains to drain into the Hooghly River. The project also proposes an ecological filtering process for these creeks. The revived creeks will provide new routes for improved infrastructure, pedestrian and bicycle paths and public transportation to the area. This in turn is expected to open up real estate development opportunities along the creeks as well as the Port lands along the Hooghly River. In addition to the creek network, abandoned industrial facilities along the River front will be reused to provide temporary housing, some non-polluting industry and a new market. Old train carriages and containers will also be repurposed to provide amenities for migrants and tourists in the area, who often sleep on the streets The propsed market will be designed as a trading place for those migrants who may bring some specialties from their hometown by train and boat, using the railway and waterfront ferry to make a connection between land and water transportation. This project is proposed as a starting point of reek corridors that can help resolve the stinging social problems and boost local economy in a process of incremental development.

The New Twisted Museum is a building that integrates both the existing structure of the building and newly applied facade and transforming into a parametric structure. Not only preserving the museum flow inside the boxes, but also creating a new pedestrian movement along the twisted structure will be able to provide additional walkway and evacuation for future purposes. The parametric facade is shaped in diamonds which the dimension and the size of each diamond holes will change based on the location in terms of height. The lower floor such as the ground floor will have smaller holes and diamonds in order to maintain its stiffness and structural load. And the size of those gradually increases and naturally merge with the initial box volume. This kind of transformation gives users to experience in different environment with engaging with indoor and outdoor.
