ERCO Innovations 2008/09 The essence of innovations is more than a collection of crea tive ideas, inventions or research results. It is the implementation of these to bring about a change for the better, to benefit the people who will use them. The new ERCO Program includes a phenomenal 800 new products.

Some are additions to, and updates of, existing ranges, but predominantly, it includes several completely new product ranges.

New developments provide the opportunity to link state-of-theart technology with the results of ERCO’s own research and develop ment to produce designs which are as innovative as the technologies used in these products. The following pages introduce our key innovations that have resulted in new ERCO lighting equipment, and explain the concepts behind the new prod uct ranges. The aim is to enable every lighting user to exploit the advantages and possibilities afforded by these developments straight away.

Spherolit reflectors: a new technology The innovative and exclusive technology which ERCO introduced in Spherolit reflectors presents a virtually ideal light quality. The reflectors offer many practical advantages to lighting designers and users. After introducing Spherolit reflectors some two years ago in individual ERCO products, they can now be found in a comprehensive range of new and existing products. So, ERCO has reinvented a seemingly trivial element of lighting technology.

The Spherolit technology is based on the division of the reflector into individual areas, similar to conventional facetted reflectors.

However, these individual areas – we call them spherolites – have a three-dimensional, spherical curvature. Due to the individual shaping of the spherolites, the reflector characteristic can be controlled over a wide range. The result is spotlight reflectors that have the same basic geometry, i.e. diameter, depth and focal point, but different light distribution patterns, from narrow spot to wide flood.

All these characteristics share one common factor – producing a light quality of the highest standard.

The beams are exceptionally uniform, without striations and have a neat, slightly soft edge – and that in connection with a suitably high light output ratio.

Spherolit reflectors are pressformed of aluminium and mirrorfinish anodised. The manufacturing process from the complex calculation and computer simulation to the manufacture of precision tools and the production occurs within ERCO, which confirms our claim to leadership in reflector technology.

ERCO Spherolit reflectors are easily recognised by the bright, attractive appearance of the individual convex spherolites.

Narrow spot To accentuate smaller objects with high luminance or to cover considerable dis-

tances between luminaire and object. Beam angle < 10°.

Spot The standard characteristic to accentuate all kinds of objects, specifically to

model the threedimensional shape. Beam angle 10°-20°.

Flood For efficient accent light on larger objects or for wider spread lighting of areas

Providing four different spotlight characteristics for one and the same basic reflector shape does not, by any means, exhaust the Spherolit principle. After extensive experiments with virtual and real reflector prototypes, ERCO has now produced an asymmetrical light distribution which resulted exclusively from the three-dimensional shaping of separate areas of the reflector.

Now several spotlight ranges include Spherolit wallwashers, which are specifically designed for applications such as sales areas or for presentation, where they are an interesting alternative to the classic lens wallwasher technology.

In terms of its basic shape, dimensions and focal point, the Spherolit reflector, wallwash, is no different from spotlight reflectors, i.e. it can also be replaced by other versions without tools. The reflector surface, however, stands out clearly due to its specially shaped spherolites, and a Softec lens replaces the usually clear safety glass. The light distribu tion of the Spherolit wallwasher is designed so that a focal emphasis is placed on the upper third of the wall, while providing general illumination of high uniformity.

The new wallwasher technology has also resulted in raising light levels over the illuminated area.

For certain applications, however, the classic lens wallwasher technology proves more suitable due to its perfect uniformity across the entire wall â&#x20AC;&#x201C; relevant for museums or particular representative areas in architecture. The wallwasher attachment also provides improved shielding against glare.

Consequently, both wallwasher technologies are now a component part of ERCOâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s extensive range of lighting equipment for vertical illumination.

Spherolit reflectors: technical background Using complex calculations and computer simulations ERCOâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s design engineers created the arrangement and shape of the spherolites so they achieve the intended light distribution pattern. Because the beam of the spotlight is actually made up of a multitude of separate beams from the individual sub areas, it is possible to produce excellent uniformity and the defined, yet soft edge of the beam without reducing the brightness of the light. Compared with other methods used to affect the spotlight characteristic, such as Vario reflector technology, attachments or

spread lenses, the Spherolit reflectors can be replaced without tools and result in an optimum light output ratio.

The development and production of Spherolit reflectors requires special know-how, especially in the area of computer calculation and simulation. The complex tool shapes can only be realised by

Many methods and effects that are used in stage lighting and then applied to shops and shop windows, presentations or trade fair stands eventually now find their way into architecture. The time was right to develop a new range of spotlights from scratch for this area of application – a system which would consolidate the progress of lighting technol­ ogy over the past few years and which creative designers could use effortlessly to implement the principle of “tune the light“.

Lighting equipment which would enable the creation of sceno­ graphic effects – a familiar aspect in stage shows and at events – even for continuous, day­by­ day operation. This new range of spotlights – Emanon ­ consists of a striking, integrative housing design for highly differentiated lighting equipment: from stand­ ards including spotlights for low­ voltage halogen or HIT lamps to ERCO specialities such as LED vary­ chrome spotlights or technical innovations such as the DALI­ controlled Goborotator.

The innovations incorporated in the Emanon range include the Spherolit reflectors, which are available with four spotlight beam angles, from narrow spot to wide flood, and wallwasher. In addi­ tion to a superior quality of light, they provide the option of replac­ ing the exchangeable reflectors in next to no time to change the www.erco.com

light distribution. For vertical illu­ mination, the range alternatively provides classic lens wallwashers.

In terms of heat management, this range also follows a new path: the thermally stressed components such as lamp, lampholder and reflector are installed in a cylin­ drical metal carrier with controlled ventilation which is situated between the high­quality plastic shells of the spotlight housing.

The flat part of the housing pro­ vides a thermally separated space for the electronic or DALI­com­ patible control gear. Its dimpled surface identifies a gripping zone to adjust the luminaires during operation.

In a class of their own are the projection spotlights, specifically those with digitally controlled Goborotator. There are two types of optical projection system, dif­ ferentiated by their light distribu­ tion patterns. Both types of system are also available as Goborotator, which projects two independently rotating gobos to produce fasci­ nating, dynamic lighting effects.

Emanon design Designer Yves Béhar says of the concept devised by fuseproject for the Emanon range of spot­ lights:

The housing itself is a handle with highly tactile recesses. The spotlight can be adjusted to illuminate the required scenery.

Emanon challenges the user’s creativity, encourages sponta­ neous and insouciant handling – a fundamentally different user experience from previous spotlight luminaires.”

The band appears like a mantle and has strong, yet unobtrusive sym­ bolism: the luminaire naturally merging with the ceiling and its surroundings. Emanon demonstrates the intelligence which character­ ises it by subtle design details which, rather than intimidate the user, encourage creativity.

At once sensual and metaphor­ ical, Emanon prompts you to touch and align it: the spotlight has a similar feel to that of a camera and allows the user to manage light intuitively.

Emanon: system design Unmistakably, the different Emanon lighting tools form a system with common design features. This makes it possible in an architectural situation to produce differentiated sceno­ graphic lighting concepts with a uniform appearance of the lumi­ naires. The spotlights use the whole spectrum of ERCO spot­ light accessories, such as colour and conversion filters or anti­ dazzle rings.

Designer Yves Béhar used a structured surface to indicate the handling zones on the spotlight. The heat generated by the lamp is dissi­ pated through the ventilation grille on the back.

Emanon Goborotator

In the Emanon range, the projection spotlights with Goborotator are an innovative highlight. Through the use of independently controlla­ ble rotating gobos, the projection effects created can be fascinating.

The character of these projections can range from slow moving, sub­ tly atmospheric effects to stimu­ lating, highly dynamic focal points.

The Goborotator can be used with two metal or glass gobos, but also with colour filters or structured glasses – thus, there is now virtu­ ally no limit to the imagination.

The direction and speed of rota­ tion are controlled using either the rotary switch directly on the spotlight or via the ERCO Light System DALI and its integrated Light Studio software, which pro­ vides a convenient tool for the operation of the Goborotator.

Low­noise toothed belt drives, elastic motor bearings, long­life lamps, and a fanless, thermally efficient design ensure reliable continuous operation in archi­ tecture.

ERCO offers a selection of gobos and struc­ tured glasses with abstract struc­ tures as acces­ sories. Since the gobos have stand­ ard dimensions,

a wide variety of suitable gobos are also available from other acces­ sory suppliers.

Cantax

The new Cantax range of spot­ lights clearly demonstrates how design and innovation can help in an aesthetic way to make tech­ nical equipment simpler and clearer, instead of increasingly complicated. Based on ERCO’s latest developments in lighting technology, the Cantax range is a logically structured system which provides a professional quality of light in shops, galleries, restau­ rants or residential areas, while making a striking, highly contem­ porary design statement with a shape made up of basic geomet­ ric forms.

As with Emanon spotlights, ERCO has provided Cantax with the new Spherolit reflectors, which are available in four light distribution patterns, from nar­ row spot to wide flood, and as a Spherolit wallwasher. In addition to a superior quality of light, they provide the option of replacing the interchangeable reflectors in next to no time to change the light distribution. When using an appropriate wallwash version of the Spherolit reflector, the light distribution can even be changed to that of a wallwasher without altering the outer appearance of the spotlight. Alternatively, Cantax is also available with the classic lens wallwasher technol­ ogy for vertical illumination. ERCO Light Studio Light Studio is the inte­ grated software for the ERCO Light System DALI. It is used for setting up light scenes and for other, more complex operating procedures. Outdoor area In the outdoor area, high­quality wallwashing is useful, for exam­ ple, for the uniform illumination of facades or walls. Tesis IP68

Tesis is the well­established range of recessed floor luminaires in protection mode IP68 for univer­ sal use in outdoor areas. The ver­ sions with square front lens in the Tesis range have now been com­ pletely redeveloped. In this shape, which designers prefer in specific architectural situations not least for aesthetic reasons, the Tesis recessed luminaires are available as directional luminaires, as LED varychrome recessed floor lumi­ naires, and in various wallwasher characteristics. The lamps pre­ dominantly used include metal halide lamps in different watt­ ages, which have a high energy efficiency and long life and thus ensure economic operation.

The Tesis lens wallwashers, which are available with both round and square front lens, are supplemented by a further two types of wallwasher which, for design reasons, are reserved to the new, square version: firstly, the Tesis focal wallwasher with a focal point of the light in the lower third of the wall, and sec­ ondly, the Tesis wallwasher with front lens above the mounting plane.

Nadir IP67

Since the unusual direction of their light attracts attention, lighting designers like to use recessed floor luminaires even in indoor areas. However, recessed floor installation is usually more complex than mounting the lumi­ naires to or in the ceiling. Conse­ quently, when the Nadir recessed floor luminaires for indoors were completely redeveloped, ERCO focused its efforts not only on the usual sophisticated lighting tech­ nology but also directed attention to a safe and simple mounting solution with superior finish.

The height­adjustable frame of the recessed floor housing now compensates for dimensional tol­ erances between floor slab and finished floor. The shallow recess depth of 100mm makes the lumi­ naires suitable for many applica­ tions in architecture. The Nadir can even be mounted in floating floor screed without forming sound bridges. The front covers are round or square; particular highlights in the range include luminaires with special characteristics such as the grazing light wallwashers or with innovative lamps such as LEDs.

Kubus

Using well­integrated lighting technology, the Kubus range of luminaires carries the ERCO prin­ ciple of “Light, not luminaires” to positive extremes – less luminaire, after all, is hardly conceivable. The miniaturised light sources, incon­ spicuous, ultra­compact cuboids with robust housings made of cast aluminium, are completely imma­ terial compared to their striking lighting effect as floor washlights or facade luminaires.

Their high energy efficiency and extended maintenance cycles are due to the modern metal halide lamps and LEDs. Two hous­ ing sizes of the Kubus completely exhaust the packing density for the appropriate light source: a line for the metal halide lamp HIT­CE 20W is available for enormous output from a compact housing; as an absolutely minimised solu­ tion, Kubus is available with high­ power LEDs for even smaller hous­ ing dimensions. Despite all the integration, the Kubus luminaires are provided with efficient, inno­ vative lighting technology which allows interesting areas of appli­ cation. And each individual Kubus model creates a particular light­ ing effect.

So, for example, the Kubus facade luminaire with LEDs is used to produce a delightful grazing light effect, while the HIT version of the facade luminaire features distinctly asymmetrical, flowing characteristics. The floor wash­ www.erco.com

The Midipoll bollard luminaire provides architects, lighting and landscape designers with a tool which competently performs not one but several tasks: Midipoll is not only an efficient instrument for outdoor area lighting, but itself also serves as an unobtrusive, space-dividing element – both during the day and at night.

The light beam emitted from the absolutely glare-free, shielded front lens illuminates the surrounding area while also grazing the elegant, cross-shaped profile to produce a discreet luminance on the bollard itself.

Lightmark floor washlights

The Lightmark range consists of a diverse system of outdoor luminaires with different flood light distributions and cuboid forms to integrate precisely and inconspicuously into architecture as well as square and landscape design. In addition to the bollard luminaires and facade luminaires already available, ERCO now also offers Lightmark luminaires for wall mounting. The complete redevelopment of the ERCO range of floor wash­ lights focused on two aspects: the integration of modern light sources such as LEDs and more flexibility in terms of trim detail design. In addition, ERCO’s design engineers devised reflectors with a new surface that proves particu­ larly scratch­resistant and easy to clean. Apart from its excellent reflection capacities, the satin matt silver coating ensures that the discreet luminance of the reflector surface provides the desired effect and turns the floor washlights into an architectural element.

The light sources themselves are fully concealed from view and protected against the ingress of dust and dirt by using a Softec lens as safety glass. The development of the Compar recessed spotlights was based to a degree on the requirements of the retail sector in the area of shop lighting. The Compar range provides a combination of innova­ tive lighting technology, rational detail solutions and flexible system design. As a result, all the spotlights have Spherolit reflec­ tors for a superior quality of light.

The light distribution patterns include the rotationally symmetri­ cal narrow spot, spot, flood and wide flood reflectors and the Spherolit reflector, wallwash, for asymmetrical light distribution.

New in the ERCO Program is the Compar recessed spotlight with display lens: depending on the version with flood or spot reflec­ tor, this lighting tool produces an oval­shaped beam of different dimensions and is suitable for the highly efficient illumination of product presentations with wide luminaire spacing. Illumination of vertical surfaces Light can be used to define and continually reinterpret spaces.

Looking at walls and other ver­ tical surfaces, it is clear that these are crucial for the percep­ tion of architecture: illuminated walls allow us to perceive the shape and dimensions of a room.

When illuminated in perfect uni­ formity, the wall appears light, almost intangible. Objects such as photos, posters or paintings can be viewed in optimal condi­ tions. Vertical illumination cre­ ates a subjective impression of significant brightness in the room and can contribute to energy sav­ ing. The lighting equipment used for this type of lighting is called wallwashers. ERCO has developed and perfected these special lumi­ naires for decades. The result is a range of tools for the illumina­ tion of vertical surfaces which is as yet unparallaled in terms of its extent and distinction. The differ­ ent types of wallwasher and their typical applications are presented on the following pages.

Wallwashing and accent lighting Wide, vertical illumination as background, together with accentuating, directed illumi­ nation in the foreground form a classic concept for highlighting objects in the room.

Successful wallwasher illu­ mination can be so subtle that it is hardly per­ ceived as such, but rather as a pleasant level of brightness in the room. The diffuse light reflected on the wall contrib­ utes to the ambi­ ent lighting.

Wallwashing: play of brilliants Vertical surfaces in the room are transformed by appropriate light­ ing equipment to become screens used for dynamic lighting effects.

Plays of colours or projections become an attrac­ tive eyecatcher.

Illumination of vertical surfaces The applications illustrated describe a widespread, uniform wall illumina­ tion with different optical systems and a wide range of lamps. To ensure optimal uniformity and high illumi­ nances, the following is recom­ mended: Wall height up to 3.0m 4.0m Offset from wall 1.0m 1.5m When the wallwashers are arranged in a row, the luminaire spacing should be the same as the offset from the wall. With some luminaires, this can be up to 1.5 times the offset from the wall. In addition, the wall and spacing distances documented in the publications provide information on optimal arrangements and the expected illuminances.

Lens wallwashers The reflector technology used here is suitable for the highest museum quality. Lens wallwashers illuminate walls from the ceiling to the floor.

The light is spread in longitudinal direction by special lenses. Reflectors distribute the luminous flux evenly on the wall and shield the lens wall­ washers to prevent glare in the room.

The wallwashers illustrated are oper­ ated on tracks.

Lens wallwashers Special lens wallwasher systems ensure a uniform illumination of the wall. The light is spread by lenses, while the reflectors direct it onto the wall. The Darklight reflectors visible from below are glare­free.

Wallwashers with LED varychrome also produce scenic effects on verti­ cal surfaces.

Lens wallwashers These lens wallwashers distinguish themselves by their high visual com­ fort. Darklight reflectors with a cut­ off angle of 40° let the luminaires appear dark. Only the cover glass is visible above the cut­off angle. A wallwasher lens system distributes the luminous flux on the wall to pro­ vide an illuminance distribution of the highest level of uniformity.

Washlights As recessed ceiling luminaires, these wallwashers are no different to down­ lights. The internal reflector segment distributes the light uniformly on the wall surface, while the downlight effect is maintained. Washlights are available for low­voltage halogen lamps, tung­ sten halogen lamps, high­pressure discharge lamps, and compact fluores­ cent lamps.

Illumination of vertical surfaces Double focus wallwashers This type of wall illumination provides the highest level of uniformity for vertical illuminances. The effect of these wallwashers is achieved using special, internal wallwasher reflectors.

Due to the total shielding of the lamp, the Darklight reflector produc­ es an improved optical effect. There is no spill light in areas of the room near to the walls.

Focal wallwashers The use of metal halide lamps in Lightscan wallwashers makes them particularly suitable for the general lighting of walls in shops and pres­ entational area. They produce a focal emphasis in the upper third of the illuminated area, e.g. for the illumi­ nation of displays above shelves.

Focal wallwashers A diffuser and a wallwasher reflec­ tor distribute the light of Tesis on a façade in a way that produces a vis­ ible focal emphasis at approx. 1/3 of the height. The lens below the safety glass produces a wide beam and dis­ tributes the luminous flux uniformly on the cover glass. This means that the luminaire is visible even when viewed from shallow angles.

Wallwashers Wallwashers in the Optec range are track mounted and provide an ideal, uniform illuminance distribution from ceiling to floor. The area in front of the wall is also illuminated.

The range comprises various types of luminaires for almost all lamps.

Wallwashers With Paratec wallwashers, part of the luminaire projects from the ceiling.

The beam intersects with the wall directly in the upper corner, while the illuminated surface remains prac­ tically invisible to the viewer. A spe­ cial wallwasher reflector provides the highest level of uniformity. These wallwashers combine a high degree of visual comfort with maximum efficiency.

Illumination of vertical surfaces Wallwashers With Tesis wallwashers, part of the luminaire is above the mounting plane. Thus, the luminaire cannot be walked on or rolled over by vehicles.

The beam intersects with the wall directly above the mounting plane.

The illuminated surface remains practically invisible to the viewer.

A special wallwasher reflector and a Softec lens provide the highest lev­ el of uniformity.

Wallwashers Designed for high­pressure discharge lamps and compact fluorescent lamps, they are available especially for wall illumination and shop lighting in sales rooms and shops. On these wall­ washers, the peak intensity is emitted at approx. 30° and produces the ver­ tical illuminances important for the required spatial effect.

Wallwashers Parscoop wallwashers and flood­ lights are provided with asymmetri­ cal beam reflectors. These reflectors are designed so that the light dis­ tribution is ideal for uniform facade lighting. In addition to the main mounting option on the ceiling or the floor to illuminate facades, they can also be mounted on walls to pro­ vide uniform ceiling illumination.

Wallwashers The special reflector technology of TFL wallwashers for fluorescent lamps provides a uniform and even wall illumination, especially in muse­ ums. The DALI­compatible luminaires have digitally addressable control gear which allow each luminaire to be addressed individually. TFL wall­ washers can also be mounted as a continuous arrangement.

The uniform light distribution from ceiling to floor highlights the wall as a whole and makes the room appear more spacious.

Illumination of vertical surfaces Spherolit wallwashers These wallwashers use Spherolit reflec­ tors, wallwash. In these reflectors, the individual spherolites are arranged so as to produce an asymmetrical light distribution. As opposed to lens wallwashers, Spherolit wallwashers can also be positioned in high rooms or closer to the wall. With a focal emphasis on the upper half of the wall, they are ideal for the illumina­ tion of vertical surfaces in shops.

Grazing light wallwashers These types of luminaire produce grazing light and can be positioned at close distance to the wall. Sculpture lenses spread the width of the beam along one plane, while maintaining a narrow beam light distribution on the other. In the round and square Nadir recessed floor luminaires, the lamps can be tilted and rotated by +/­ 5° for adjustment.

Facade luminaires Focalflood facade luminaires are available for high­performance LEDs. The luminaire’s lens system has been optimised so that a narrow beam light distribution gives an efficient grazing light on the wall surface. In the other direction, a wide light distribution is produced. The DALI­compatible vary­ chrome version can be controlled via the ERCO Light System DALI.

Facade floodlights Facade floodlights are fitted with asymmetrical reflector­lens systems.

They are effectively free of spill light.

The light distributions are designed for even wall illumination or surfaces without perceptible edges to the beam.

Lighting control systems Lighting control systems from ERCO are professional control systems for lighting management and scenic dimming.

By using such systems, the architecture can be repeatedly reinterpreted along functional, aesthetic and dramaturgical lines. Intelligent lighting management increases the comfort of the building and saves energy. It is equally possible to control light scenes via timer functions as it is to program cyclical sequences. ERCO lighting control systems are particularly suitable for controlling complex, atmospheric scenic lighting installations in architectural settings, e.g. in hotel foyers, lobbies, shops, restaurants, bars or conference rooms. Lighting control systems allow dynamic and user-friendly control of lighting tools with colour mixing function such as ERCO Varychrome luminaires.

Light System DALI

The ERCO Light System DALI brings an innovative approach to lighting control: intelligently applied DALI (Digital Addressable Lighting Interface) technology for individually addressable luminaires, combined with the ERCO Light Studio software, form an integrated system for scenographic lighting. Together with the comprehensive range of DALI-compatible ERCO luminaires for the indoor and outdoor area and the ERCO DALI track, this enables scenographic lighting effects such as coloured light, dynamic progressions, light scenes, timer functions and light sequences to be used in architecture more simply and economically than ever before.

New standards in terms of ease of operation, range of functions and creative control are set by the consistent integration of software and hardware. For example, colour selection for DALI-compatible varychrome luminaires in the ERCO Light Studio are determined clearly and interactively at the click of a mouse. The bus technology and the switch and dimming functions integrated into the control gear make a permanent wiring of individual circuits and the installation of vast dimmer banks in switch cabinets unnecessary.

DALI-compatible luminaires of other manufacturers can also be integrated into Light System DALI and be controlled just as easily as ERCO Light Clients. The Light Server 64 for up to 64 DALI addresses enables the Light System to handle many typical lighting control applications, as in multifunctional rooms, shops and shop windows, restaurants, lobbies or company showrooms.

Larger installations with over 64 addresses can be created by networking up to twelve Light Servers via the integrated Ethernet interfaces. This makes it possible to manage up to 768 DALI addresses.

In order to identify luminaires in complex rooms with limited visual contact, each Light Client has an electronic luminaire ID stored in the control gear and recorded on a sticker, which is placed in a lighting plan on site. The electronic luminaire ID is automatically recognised by the lighting control software. The DALI Light System consists of the hardware components Light Server and Light Changer and the software Light Studio. The Light Server is a DALI controller that stores system and scene data and provides the control functions. Day-to-day operation takes place via the compact, wall-mounted ERCO Light Changer control panel, via push-buttons or via remote control. To set up light

scenes and for more complex operations, designers or users can use the ERCO Light Studio software on a PC connected to the Light Server or the Light Changer via a USB connection. The Light Server uses the DALI protocol to communicate with the Light Clients, i.e. the connected DALI-compatible luminaires, via a two-core control line.

With DALI track accessories, the well-established and reliable ERCO track is ideal for the operation of DALI-compatible ERCO spotlights via Light System DALI.

Light System DALI

Software

The Light Studio software is used to set up lighting installations with Light System DALI and to make its complex functions available in a user-friendly format. It consists of four modules: Light Master, Light Book, Light Timer, and Light Sequencer. Light scenes, which may contain coloured effects and dynamic progressions, are created, designed and edited in the Light Master module. The Light Book is used to organise and spatially structure lighting installations.

The selection of the scene can be automatically time-controlled with the Light Timer. A sequence of light scenes can be stored in the Light Sequencer. An interface for the configuration of Emanon

Goborotator is integrated in the Light Master. The project data can be printed out for documentation. The software is suitable for the following operating systems: Windows 2000, XP and Vista.

Output devices

The Light Server controls the ERCO Light Clients. These can be DALI compatible luminaires and/or DALI compatible control gear, dimmers, switching actuators or transformers. The data for the luminaires, light scenes, timer programs and the room management is stored in the Light Server. A PC installed with the ERCO Light Studio software can be connected via the USB port.

Every single Light Server 64+ can address up to 64 DALI participants.

It has an interface enabling it to be networked with additional Light Server 64+ devices. A total of up to 768 DALI addresses can be managed via the integral Ethernet interfaces. Four digital inputs for

customised configuration can be used for push-buttons, movement sensors or twilight switches. An interface to the media system can be created or a PC with Light Studio connected via Ethernet.

Input devices

Stored light scenes and timer programs can be recalled by the Light Server via the Light Changer. The Light Changer has a user-friendly touch screen for menu navigation.

A push-button for the On/Off function can switch all Clients on or off.

The plastic housing can be mounted on the plaster or flush mounted in the wall using the mounting frame. The Light Changer has a USB interface for connecting a PC to the Light System installation.

Batteryless remote controls or wall transmitters and a radio control receiver are available for the easy recall of light scenes.

System overview The diagram shows how the components of the Light System DALI can be combined not only with ERCO Light Clients but also with conventional ERCO luminaires, with DALI-compatible luminaires of other manufactures and with additional peripheral devices such as push-buttons.

The installation work is significantly reduced when compared with that of other lighting control technologies: DALI technology integrates the switching and dimming functions in the luminaire or in the control gear, while the 2-core control line connects all participating devices in any topology. The power supply to the luminaires is constant and independent of the DALI wiring.

Light Server The Light Server 64+ is a DALI controller that stores system and scene data and provides the control functions. Its compact design gives it great flexibility when choosing a mounting location.

The ERCO Light Studio software is included with every Light Server.

Light Client DALI-compatible ERCO luminaires – known as Light Clients – are preprogrammed with a factory-set code of their DALI control gear.

This allows them to be automatically recognised and clearly displayed by the Light Server and the Light Studio software. The selection of Light Clients currently available covers the most important areas of the ERCO product range.

In particular, it also includes Varychrome luminaires whose colour change function can now be simply and intuitively controlled with unparalleled ease using the Light System DALI.

Light Clients with luminaire ID When you can see the luminaires, the mounting locations of Light Clients are identified simply by using the “flash” option in the Light Studio software. However, this is not always possible for larger Light System DALI installations. Now, every Light Client carries an additional sticker with a unique luminaire ID. This individual luminaire ID allows each Light Client to be identified both during commissioning and in the lighting control software. The sticker can be removed by the installer and transferred to the appropriate place on the reflected ceiling plan drawing to show the mounting location of each Light Client.

Light System DALI ERCO Light Studio The ERCO Light Studio software is an integral component of the Light System DALI and is included with every Light Server. Although a Light System DALI may be commissioned for use without a PC, only the Light Studio can give designers and users full creative control in the sense of â&#x20AC;&#x153;tune the lightâ&#x20AC;?.

With its easy-to-follow graphic user interface, Light Studio provides many different functions for setting up and documenting DALI Light Systems and for using them for scenographic and energy-efficient architectural lighting. These functions include such unique features as the automatic recognition of DALI-compatible ERCO luminaires (Light Clients) and the display of these with product names, images and article numbers, or the interac tive determination of the colour locus of varychrome luminaires.

A PC installed with ERCO Light Studio can be connected to the Light Server or the Light Changer via a USB port or to the hub via Ethernet. When connected, the arrangement and current settings of the particular Light System

DALI are transferred to the program and displayed there as a project. After completing the system set up and programming the light scenes, the PC can then be disconnected from the system; the day-to-day operation (i.e. recalling light scenes) is performed via the Light Changer or via pushbuttons. Light Studio consists of several modules which cover different tasks when working with a Light System DALI.

Light Master The primary function of the Light Master module is to process and control light scenes. The Light Clients of a Light System are displayed as a list and graphically. Their attributes, such as dimmer settings or colour locations, can be set interactively, and there are userfriendly tools such as the colour wheel, a colour library and a progression library or dynamic progressions especially for controlling varychrome luminaires. Light Clients can be grouped together as required and synchronised with each other. Defined settings are saved as a light scene. Up to 1024 light scenes can be created and given plain text names. These are also displayed on the Light Changer.

Light Book The Light Book is used for the organisation and spatial structuring of Light Studio projects. Its main function is to create zones and assign Light Clients or Light Changers to zones. It also defines generic Light Clients for luminaires from other manufacturers or custombuilt ERCO luminaires and saves the relevant information in the DALI control gear of the Light Clients.

Light Timer The Timer module allows light scenes to be recalled at predefined times. The time and calendar functions provide great flexibility for the automation of scenographic lighting, e.g. to set the light scenes to shop-opening times or licensing hours, or to reduce the lighting level during night time.

Light Sequencer The Light Sequencer is a tool designed specifically for the purpose of defining and storing sequences of light scenes as a timed progression.

Compared with the dynamic progression in the Light Master, the Light Sequencer can be used to create a sequence of scenes without specifying a definite starting time. This component can then be used for a variety of events with different starting times.

The actions and fading times for each scene transition can be set individually.

Light System DALI Integrating sensors and media technology The four digital inputs on the Light Server allow an individual configuration of components such as movement sensors or twilight switches. The Light System DALI can thus interact with sensors and automatically recall scenes. The inputs are conveniently configured using Light Studio. The Ethernet interface enables the user to connect to the media technology or wirelessly program the Light System DALI using a WLAN router. This simplifies the set-up of the scenes and enables the lighting designer to move around freely

in the room and check the different light settings in the Light Studio.

The battery free remote control, for example, is useful in conference rooms for conveniently recalling different light scenes.

The receiver receives the signals sent by the remote control or the wall transmitter and passes them on to the Light System DALI installation.

The battery free wall transmitter with four pushbuttons can also be subsequently mounted on any surface since it does not require electrical wiring.

Sensors such as movement sensors or twilight switches can be connected to the four digital inputs of the Light Server and configured using the Light Studio software.

Scalability DALI protocol limits the number of addresses in a conventional DALI system to 64. ERCO Light System DALI goes beyond this limit with the Light Server 64+, which can be networked with other Light Servers of the same type through an Ethernet interface. Installations with over 64 addresses can be created by networking up to twelve Light Server 64+ units via the integrated Ethernet interfaces. This allows the management of up to 768 DALI addresses. The number of connectable Light Changers multiplies accordingly.

The option of the networkable Light Server 64+ makes the Light System DALI suitable for extensive systems with differentiated lighting concepts and dynamic light.

LON Area Net

ERCO Area Net, the system for light management and scenic dimming, is a convenient tool for dynamic lighting design. Area Net can be used to interpret architecture to suit different requirementswhether aesthetic or practical, Area Net can create the optimum lighting effect for each individual case.

Area Net integrates into the networked building technology as a modular-based individual system with decentralised control panels which control the lighting of a whole building and can be linked up with sensors, other equipment and data networks. The system components have their own microprocessor with an integrated interface. Identified by individual addresses, all com-ponents can communicate with one another using a common line, which simplifies the installation considerably.

The speed and dependability of the bus protocol is ideal for high quality lighting control applications.

Sensors enable the interaction between Area Net and its environment. This means that the daylight sensors automatically maintain the lighting level even with fluctuating levels of daylight, saving energy. In addition, different light scenes can be recalled to suit the external lighting conditions. The connections for presence sensors and switches complete the product range.

LON Area Net

Input devices

Programming, configuration and operation of Area Net is carried out via the Control Pad or a Preset.

From this point the output modules are addressed. They recall the relevant parameters for the requested light scene from their memory banks and control the connected circuits as required. Parallel to the Preset, four programmed light scenes can be recalled and can be regulated in their total brightness through the master control function via extensions, or via an IR remote control. An IR receiver is integrated in the Control Pad or the Preset. Sensors for the indoor and outdoor areas enable automatic input for the daylight control. A sequence module is available

Output modules for a maximum of 4 or 8 connections are available to control external dimmers or relays for luminaires, electric blinds and projection screens.

The daylight control with internal sensor maintains constant illuminance within a room. The set value can be a default value or can be variably selected. Variably means that the present light situation (illuminance) is taken as being the new set value.
