We’re in a time of change. Not only as creators, not only as people but in every aspect of life. We are changing the way we think, the way we buy, the way we consume, the way we act all due to this generational shift influenced by many extenuating factors such as technology, consciousness, and our new desire to care. In this process, we asked ourselves that exact question: “what do we care about?”

ABOUT THE MAGAZINE A cross between Nylon and Essence, alt + shift magazine is an online platform and digital magazine cultivated to guide us as we “shift” through life. alt + shift magazine is made of various content pieces catered to each platform and audience. We offer a unique perspective on fashion, design, opinion, culture, innovation + more through aesthetic, social, and cultural lenses. Consider alt + shift to be a digital magazine without borders - a living and ever growing embodiment of what we as the creators and what you as readers care about. We can only hope that the things that stress us now will be minor as we go through this journey, making space for new cares and worries just the same, along with new ways of expressing them.

welcome to the shift.

FOUNDERS Sage Hunter + Arianna Alleyne

ABOUT US Let’s set the stage of where our worlds overlap. We are friends of nearly 10 years sharing many life-structuring experiences, recent college graduates wanting more than this workforce can offer, lovers of travel constantly looking for our new adventures, and avid fashion enthusiasts. With that being said, both of us as creatives and as individuals have polar opposite backgrounds, one in engineering with an analytical mindset and the other in marketing with an artistic twist. Therefore, morphing and molding this magazine into a common ground for our passions, pain points, and provisions has been nothing short of a journey. Our biggest goal was to prioritize inclusion by bridging the gap between our truth and inclusion everyone in between. We welcome you to grow with us, share with us, and learn with us. This isn’t about us but for us and for all of you. Rather than being afraid of this shift, embrace it - those who don’t will simply be left behind. With alt + shift magazine, we hope for it to become a staple and ultimately a part of your life. Thank you so much to those who have extended your support whether through simple words of affirmation or retweets and to everyone pushing us to work even harder with the lack thereof. We see you. And thank you for seeing us.

daily (ideal) quarantine routine

the title states ideal because in reality every week is different. sometimes I lay in bed (completely outing myself, yay) and take many zoom calls from bed. sometimes, I get up early, make a smoothie with breakfast, shower and feel rejuvenated for the day, but then again, more than likely, I will not wake-up early, breakfast will be little to none, a shower won’t happen, and I’m a complete mess. with that, let’s get into my ideal quarantine schedule!

get started don’t get in the habit of laying in bed for hours, get up at a set time and get completely ready for the day. make breakfast, stretch, some exercise, and enjoy your morning!

work whether you’re WFH (working from home) or have online classes, you should start work right after breakfast + your morning routine to keep the most momentum and productivity. make a to-do list + get to work. the more you get done in the block of time, the more variety + fun you can fit in the rest of the day.

lunch + rejuvenation it’s time to eat! lunch is very important to help you keep momentum throughout the rest of the day. If you have the ability to get outside at this time, take advantage of that. it will help break up the day + allow you to recharge. getting sun + some air is essential but remember to be responsible when outside and around others.

hobbies + self-care use the rest of the afternoon for work, personal growth, + self-care. wrap up any projects/assignments you’ve been working on. revisit your to-do list and check-off the tasks you have completed. it’s okay if you didn’t accomplish everything today, there is always tomorrow. now breathe. time to light some candles, practice self-care, prepare dinner, + prepare for the day(s) ahead.

It’s not that great right now, but my strength, faith, and perseverance will push me through.

I am always important, no matter what.

Not everything will go my way, but I will try to be flexible. This hurts, so I need to be extra kind towards myself.

This is tough but so am I.

Everything will get better sooner or later.

If I stay strong I know I will get through it.

I’ve dealt with harder situations and I know it will get better.

did you know?

nostalgia used to be considered a deadly mental illness.

the good old days... centuries ago, nostalgia was enough cause for people to be admitted into mental institutions - who would’ve thought? pairing the symptoms of modern-day PTSD and clinical depression, this yearning for home or past times would overcome people to the point of hysteria and even death. now described as a wistful longing of past experiences with mood boosting qualities, feeling nostalgic allows us to connect with what once was. sometimes used as a coping mechanism and a form of escapism from unpleasant times, this frame of mind provides comfort and tends to contribute to a positive mental state. with this, also comes a layer of deception. reflecting is always a great exercise for consistent personal improvements but don’t get too caught up in the past. it will drive you crazy if you let it.

i wish i could go back...

KITH WOMEN X

BARBIE DOLL

Kith Women x Barbie 60th Anniversary Collaboration C’mon Barbie let’s go party! “For sixty years, Barbie has been an international pop-culture phenomenon offering girls around the globe a chance to play, tell stories, and, most importantly, to dream. Kith echoes this mindset by presenting an immersive world for its customers by engaging them through a unique retail environment that fosters creativity,” says Kith-founder Ronnie Fieg. Back in September of 2019, Kith Women announced its partnership with Barbie to commemorate their 60th anniversary. In celebration of this momentous milestone, Kith Women joined forces with the American toy company to build an immersive experience and activation by hosting a styling competition with an exciting digital component. Kicking off this collaboration with Barbie styling sessions at their NYC Flagship location, participants chose from 4 dolls that uniquely represented the dynamic diversity that Kith Women stands for. Next, participants dressed and styled the dolls on-site with more than 80 custom doll-sized apparel and accessories from the Kith Women line. Following 189 submissions from the styling session, a panel of judges sat down to select the top six dolls and shared these on their Instagram feed, allowing their thousands of followers to have the final say. The finalist who received the most likes on the @kithwomen Instagram would go on to become the official limited-edition Kith Women x Barbie doll, which is set to be released later this year and available from Kith stores worldwide. With over 30,000 likes, the winner of the competition was New Jersey native, Mekka Gutierrez. We sat down with Mekka to learn more about her goals, and this awesome win!

MEET MEKKA. @mekkashyian

When did you first know that you were interested in fashion?

I’ve been into fashion since I was a kid. In elementary school I would model in fashion shows. I loved having all the different looks for the different scenes. My family is really into fashion so it was always something that felt pretty natural for me.

What does fashion mean to you?

Fashion is art. It’s a unique way to express who you are.

Who and what are some of your biggest inspirations in life?

The challenges I’ve faced are my biggest inspiration. Challenges keep me passionate.

Did you always want to be a stylist? If so, why? If not, when and why did you realize this was the path for you?

What is your creative process?

I thought I wanted to be a visual merchandiser for awhile, until I realized how much more fun it is to dress a human. I enjoy getting to know clients and of course I love hearing how much they love my work!

When I style I do as much research as possible. I stay up to date with what’s trending, past seasons and future ideas. It’s also important to remember to consider your clients budget!

What are the biggest challenges when it comes to the work you do?

What does this Kith Women x Barbie doll win mean to you?

The biggest challenge would have to be getting some clients to step out of their comfort zones!

This win means everything to me! I loved Barbie as a kid and would’ve never imagined having MY OWN Black Barbie! It’s surreal still!

In hindsight, how does it feel to see such broad representation in today’s dolls and toys for this generation and beyond?

I love seeing the diversity in today’s dolls! We are all unique and it’s important for kids to see a representation of themselves and know it’s OK to be different.

What would you tell your younger self?

I would tell my younger self to do it, whatever it is just do it. You’ll never know what you’re capable of if you don’t just do it.

What does the next year look like for you?

How about the next 5?

In the next year I’d love to get back to working in a studio. E-commerce styling is so different from personal styling! I love researching the different brands and being able to create brand conscious looks that not only align with the stores aesthetic but also the vendors aesthetic.

In the next 5 years I hope to create a full service styling agency providing personal styling, makeovers, and personal shopping!
