4 | MANIFESTO

< Assemble to Assembly , community activation >

is

a project co-initiated by Colllab, a architecture research lab in SABE and leader of Kampung Keramat, with the supported grant by Khind Starfish Foundation and from the fundraising of the community. This project is to build a public library for children of Kg Datuk Keramat within their community garden, aim to provide a gathering space for the residents close to community garden, especially the children from Kampung Datuk Keramat. It shall provide a good education starter : toys, reading and maker space for the children , while easing the worries of parents that would like to work in the community farm .

For this

PROJECT

library, we have research and develop this community library with digital fabrication (CNC cut easy-assemble plywood joinery system), to allow villagers to be involve in the building assembling process with us for the knowledge exchange. For this to happen we will organise some workshop prior and during the building of Keramat Library, to incur knowledge sharing and community bonding. Upon the pilot built of this digital fabricated structure, we hope to open source the

methodology and research more in-depth into the possibility of disaster & community relief architecture.

52 | EPILOGUE

FUTURE Keramat Library is a pilot project, which means, there are plenty of development possibility in this fabrication, in terms of building construction and modular benches. Hence, instead of being proud in contributing something to the community, we should appreciate the community to offer a chance for us to begin our future R&D research through this library project. We predict, deny, and foresee that how this making space might change, by conducting site and community analysis. The element of happiness not only can be foreseen in the future usage, but also during our progress. During the build, children are hanging around, watching us and also having fun with us. They knew that this is for them. While participants and the local people enjoying the process, we knew that this not the end, but a start for future engagement in different ways. In short-term, it is a library full with books. In long-term, the library might full of plants, people, animals, this is vitality. As what the president of the Community Garden, Encik Halim had said, This is not an ordinary library, in the future, birds and herbs might become the books. This project has elevated my understanding towards architecture, which people and local culture is the most important part to encourage future development, instead of the building itself. Hence, this project will be the beginning of the entire research, which there will be an enduring observation on the community. We are looking forward to surprised changes on the community.

EPILOGUE | 53

ACKNOWLEDGEMENT As a student, we were able to engage in practical construction, which is something beyond our during our ordinary architecture studies in our school. Besides, it gives an experience of bottom-up during the community engagement, as we know that somehow the local community are more experience than us, especially in self-built aspects, while we are contributing this library to the community. Thanks to everyone who engage in this project, you guys are really awesome.
