LAST ISSUE OF THE TERM

Message from the

NEWS EDITOR Hello Hedgehogs

We have finally made it to the end of the term. It's a very bittersweet moment for me. I've been participating in Key Club for all 4 years in high school. These past 4 years have truly been such a fun and amazing experience. I've met so many people and had a grand time. This year has really been a special one for me since this is was the year I really opened up and participated in many events and things I've never done before. This is the first year I actually made a newsletter. Yeah, I've never made a newsletter before I became a Division News Editor. Through my experience this year, I've grown so much and really enjoy learning and growing making these newsletters. Again, I'm so thankful for everyone who reads my newsletter. I appreciate it so much from the bottom of my heart. Well since this is my last newsletter, I hope you enjoyed this journey as much as I have. For the last time, this has been Mikaela as your Division News Editor. Rolling out! Rolling to Service,

Mikaela Dinh Division 13 West News Editor

LTG LETTER

What's Up Hedgehogs

This is it. It’s my final newsletter message to all of you for this term! Looking back at my first DCM, I did not think that we would make it this far as a Division where to date, we have almost broken our fundraising goal during a pandemic. Where to date, we continue to grow as a division during a time that our clubs were all struggling to grow themselves. This month, we’re going to transition to a new term and celebrate everything that was for the past year! With District Convention coming up very soon, I want to remind everyone to please register early and stay along for the ride. Though the experience might be virtual this term, I know that DCON Committee is putting their heart and soul into making this year’s convention an amazing one. And with the passing of DCON, Vanessa will officially be taking over our division and working towards her own goals. Even though I technically won’t be in Key Club anymore, I’m looking forward to all that is to come with her and hope that everyone sticks by her the same way you all stayed with me. I am beyond proud to see all the progress that we have been able to make this past term and though it makes me sad to think that it has to come to an end soon, I wouldn’t have swapped this experience for anything. I have a lot more to say in my farewell message with the rest of DLT, but know that this is not the end. Make sure to continue staying safe, serving your communities to the fullest, and I hope you enjoy the final issue of our newsletter for this term! Until next time~ Rolling to Service,

Javier Nunez

FARE FROM DLT

Jennifer Magaña, Executive Assistant

Hello guys! It makes me sad to say that we have come to the end of our term. Although this year was VERY different I would like to thank everyone for still being part of this journey. This term was a new experience and I really enjoyed it. This was something new for myself and I know it was for the rest of you guys. We all worked together and I hope you all got to meet new people. I would also like the thank my DLT partners ESPECIALLY our LTG JAVIER! Thank you for everything you did for us. I really wish you all the best now and in the future. Peace <3

Alexia Cerilo, Executive Assistant Dear Division 13 West, It has been a wonderful roller coaster ride with you all during this memorable term! Even though this term was virtual, you all have made the work worth it through your participation in our social and service events, as well as our DCMs. Through your passion for Key Club, it inspired me to work harder for the division whether it be helping our LtG with DCM planning, or even just driving miles in order to deliver goodies. The Key Club motto: “Caring - our way of life” is made possible through my favorite type of event, which is At-Home Service week to our Social Justice Infographic Making, I was amazed at how even in a pandemic, you spoke up about issues regarding our community, stood up for others, promoted healthy living, and many more. Looking back at our division Instagram, I couldn’t help but notice that our division grew and developed just like every member. We all grew as a leader ready to take on hills and mountains ahead of us. With this said, I want to wish you all an even BETTER term for this upcoming year which would only be possible with you! Rollin out! Alexia Cerilo

WELL Simon Zhong, Spirit Coordinator Hey hedgehogs! This term has been really amazing with y’all and I’m really sad that it’s ending. I made many friends being in this town and I won’t forget any of y’all. Though at some points I did have a mental breakdown trying to rush atheist articles in the last minute but I overcome that lol. I hope whoever takes on my position will how’s the best time of their life because I definitely did.

Mikaela Dinh, Division News Editor Hey Division 13 West, Did you enjoy this term? For me, this term has got to be one of the most memorable term out of the 4 years I’ve been a part of Key Club. Getting to see the Division grow each year made the journey so much more memorable and exciting. Seeing our division pass the first round at FRS in 2019 was a moment for me and I can never forget. I got to meet so many new people, had many moments of laughter, break out of my shell, and screaming my head off through Key Club. I would like to thank everyone who spends their time reading the newsletter each month! I know I’m not the best News Editor but thank you for continuously showing love to the newsletters. I would like to especially thank our lovely members! Without everyone, we wouldn’t have someone reading the newsletters or showing up to DCMs. You are amazing! I would like to also thank the best LtG Division 13 West can ever wish for Javier! Thank you for sitting through all my questions and bothering me late at night. Thank you for all your amazing support and I am truly grateful. Thank you to the rest of the DLT members for the constant support as well and for making me feel comfortable in our team! I would finally like to thank my home club Lincoln you guys are the best, Kiwanis Advisors, and every person who made my Key Club journey a whole lot more enjoyable! Let’s cherish these memories forever! Rollin out!

Erik Villarreal Jr. + Head Spirit Coordinator/Fundraising Coordinator Hello Division 13 West As my time in Key Club comes to an end I would like to say it has been a pleasure to serve you as Spirit and Fundraising Coordinator this term. I still remember our last in-person DCM Febuary 15th 2020. I didn't think not in a million years, that would be my last in-person key club event. Even though the 2020-2021 term was virtual and much different from past terms, I can say without a doubt that this term was my favorite term in my Key Club journey, and I would like to thank everyone who was apart of it. My DLT members, my counterparts, my homeschool, my fundraising team, my spirit team, my partner Simon, my advisors, my fellow members and of course my LTG. Depsite being virtual, we were able to achieve our service hour goal, and our goal for funds raised toward charity. Great work Division 13 West, I'm proud of you. What is and always will be one of the best decisions of my life, is joining Key Club when I was sophomore. These past three years have been unforgettable and I will cherish the memories I made for the rest of my life. Key Club taught me how to be a good leader, it helped me gain confidence, it helped me step out of my comfort zone, and if I hadn't joined Key Club I probably wouldn't have gotten into Cal State Fullerton. Because of Key Club I had the best highschool experience I could've ever imagined. I got the confidence to go up and talk to girls, I met so many new friend, I got to go to six flags, and I even brought back an old tradition. I made macaroons for my friends. Something I used to always do when I was a little kid. All that being said I'll have more to say in the farewell video that will be posted the day I retire. An then Vanessa will the new LTG of Division 13 West. I wish the new board the best of luck. As my time in Key Club comes to an end I would like to also say another huge thank you to my LTG Javier Nunez for being the best LTG our division has ever had. Thank you to Mikaela for making amazing newsletters all term long. Thank you to my partner Simon for always being there for us and making us laugh. Thank you to Alexia for being the best President and Executive Assistant and helping me deliver macaroons to far locations. Thank you Jennifer without you my key club experience wouldn't have been as good as it was, and thank you Sofia for all of your hard work. Thank you to my fundraising team for always having my back and helping me fundraiser throughout the term while remaining safe. And thank you to everyone in our division. For everything. I'm really going to miss Key Club and everyone who was apart of this priceless experience. But part of the journey is the end. I love you Division 13 West! Thank you.

Javier Nunez-Verdugo, Lieutenant Governor What’s popping, hedgehogs! When I first began my Key Club journey, it ironically was the end of one of our old Lieutenant Governor’s term. Walking into the Bellflower Kiwanis Hall for our division banquet, I had never expected that that single experience would evolve into this amazing term that we’ve had with one another. I first met our IP x2 LtG Beverly at that banquet and there isn’t a moment where I don’t remember the immense kindness that she showed me as a new member even though she had never met me in the past. From that point, I wanted to make other members (old and new) feel the same love the second they step into our events and are looking for a new place to call home. From club meetings to service events to Fall Rally South, I found new reasons to continue falling in love with this organization and this amazing division. Being able to see the growth of 13 West over almost 4 years has absolutely blown me away. I am beyond proud of the division leadership team that I led that reintroduced so many positions that we didn’t even have during my time prior to becoming LtG. The Kiwanians and other members of the K-Family that we’ve been able to connect to are also deserving of so much recognition for their help in catapulting our division into a new age. Thank you especially to Region 8 Advisor Ms. Acosta and our head Kiwanis advisor Mr. Santo for being one of the most encouraging and caring individuals during my term. Without their support, I don’t believe that we would have been able to do as much as we were able to do this term (even with it being 100% online). Quick shoutout to my friends from OUTSIDE of the division like D37N LtG Jessica and members of the PIE committee. Without beautiful souls like them in my life, I would not have been able to complete my term. Thank you for continuing to be there for me when I was feeling at my lowest and didn’t always tell you guys about it. I’ll forever cherish the memories that we had made this term and hope we continue them for years to come. To my Division Leadership Team, thank you so much for putting up with me all term! This year was insanely new for everyone and you all truly lived up to your name. I loved all the jokes, all the rants, and all of the memories that we made with each other. There will never be another DLT like you guys anywhere in CNH and I’m glad that I was able to lead you all as LtG this term. You guys did so much to help us grow this term and I want you to know that there wasn’t a single contribution from you that went unnoticed. You guys are the best and forever have my heart! To all of the members I hope that you continue to explore a newfound passion for service whether you’re continuing on with Key Club or not! Rest assured that it is still entirely possible to make a positive impact in the lives of others online and that this past term was proof of just that. May you all find happiness in your future endeavors and that your FIRST in-person term since the beginning of the pandemic be one that brings overwhelming emotion. A single newsletter message cannot encapsulate everything that I am grateful for in these past 3 years, but thank you so much for everything 13 West. I’m proud to have loved you the way that I did and hope that you can continue finding inspiration + growth with our new LtG Vanessa! I’ll still be around if anyone ever needs me or if you ever need a friend to speak to. Find me on Instagram @javiin.un and I hope to hear from some of you soon! You changed my life for the better and for that, I am eternally grateful. Until next time, 13 West! Serving with Love, Javier Nunez-Verdugo IP 13 West Lieutenant Governor 2020-2021

PROJECT

DIVISION 13 X UCLA CKI SERVICE

Simon Zhong Historian | Downtown Magnets High On February 20th we had a Circle K meeting with another Division such as D13s and our Divisions along with the UCLA circle K members that led the service project. It was pretty chill for the most part and I got to talk to many new people from D13S which was chill. And the best part was that there wasn’t any awkward silence for the most part and personally having an awkward silence triggers my anxiety. The service projects that we did were free rice and a website called bean bean bean. The bean website made me mad the most because you would have multiple questions answered at once but if you mess up the one you lose all your points and have to start all over again.

FEBRUARY

DCM

Allison Ojeda Historian | Lincoln Division 13 West, alongside Division 37 North, held a joint February DCM on the 19th of February. The theme for this DCM was Cottagecore, and it felt like it. Once joining the Zoom meeting, we went over some of the things we would do during the event. Like many of the events before, the love box was open to sending heartfelt messages to others attending the DCM. Before moving on to the main activity, both divisions were sent into two different breakout rooms to go over division updates and other important announcements. After finishing up in the breakout rooms, both divisions came back together for the main activity that many were waiting for. Everyone either had the option to do glass painting or Color-A-Smile. The event was a great opportunity as well to meet other people both inside and outside your division. Throughout the activity, letters sent to the lovebox were read out loud. Sadly, as all events do, the DCM had come to an end but left us excited for the next one.

Katie Perez Historian | King Drew While many events were held in the month of February one event that had such an important meaning was the Rose River Project. This event was so meaningful and was an event where members can give back to the community. The purpose of the event was to create paper flowers that would represent a lost life during the pandemic. Members were able to earn hours andalso doing something meaningful that will be remembered by many people. Many members enjoyed taking part in it and taking their time to make these flowers that had such an important meaning.

ROSE RIVER MEMORIAL ENVIRONMENT

ANIMAL

RIGHTS SERVICE WEEK

The first day of March was greeted with an exciting new announcement: March is home to a multi-week service project focused entirely on raising awareness about social justice issues. The past months have seen a spike in Anti-Asian hate crimes, cases of police brutality, animal abuse, and a list of other despicable offenses, so this service week was necessary. The first week of service was devoted to making infographics relating to saving the environment and the animal rights movement, and it was a great opportunity to research topics such as climate change and the Green New Deal. GALA Key Club members made multiple graphics and slides on topics ranging from why one should consider converting vegetarianism to the scientific and ethical issues with animal testing. The first week was a great introduction to the month ahead and was an opportunity to advance the extremely pressing issues of global warming.
