ooking at his stooped stature and small frame, one cannot imagine the strength and determination that this 83-year-old gentleman has. But T. Krishnan is not an ordinary man. He began his journey on October 2015 and has come to the Capital with a mission — he wants all the rivers of India to be united, so that the nation’s water crisis can be tackled and India emerges as a hunger free nation. He pedalled his way from his village in Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu to Delhi on a tricolour adorned tricycle with pictures of former president APJ Abdul Kalam. Talking about his mission, the man, who avoids personal

publicity, says, “My family told me not to go, thinking it may hamper my health. Yet I am here, since I want to request the government to unite all the rivers of the country. Till now, only promises have been made on the unification of rivers. The government is busy building infrastructure. Tell me, will a 4-lane highway feed us?” This is not the first time that he has come to Delhi with his petition. He was in the Capital in 2000 and again in 2002. He feels that if the rivers get inter-connected, farmers will be able to grow 3-4 crops in a year. “The Ganges alone has the capacity to feed the whole world. And, here, there are so many people in our nation who don’t even have one square meal,” he adds, with his eyes welling up.

Krishnan, activist Krishnan’s son is an engineer, settled in the United States. When asked why he chose to travel by road, he says, “I have money to travel by air plane but I chose to raise awareness by travelling on my cycle.” He suffered a set back in his journey when he fell sick sick with food poisoning near Nagpur, last year. “Before this, I could pedal

around 22 kilometres a day. But after I fell sick, I went back to my village for two months. I am only able to pedal for 10-12 kilometres,” he adds. He had previously submitted an application to the President’s office, but it received no response. “If I am given an appointment with the President, then it will open more opportunities for me to take this cause to the people. I will go to every Panchayat in Tamil Nadu with this cause. India will be a hungerfree country if our rivers are united, ”he says with optimism. He has a request for his fellow citizens. “People must come to Delhi and raise their voice. Then only will the ruling people realise the importance of this cause,” he concludes.
