id you spot this dress (above) worn by Emma Watson in the film, Beauty and the Beast? If you did, you’d be surprised to know that it was made in India. Assistant costume designer for the film, Sinéad O’Sullivan, revealed in an Instagram post that the bodice of the ensemble, which is encrusted with aari work (intricate thread embroidery) was handcrafted by craftsmen Kasam and Juma (below left) in Bhuj, Gujarat.
“This style lent itself very nicely to this eighteenth century French floral design,” Sullivan wrote on the post. Emma is known for championing fashion which is sustainablysourced and created. Sullivan also added that the same practice was followed in the film. “As a team, we tried to source ethical, fair-trade and sustainable fabrics wherever possible,” she wrote, “The rest of the fabrics were sourced from fairtrade co-operatives in India and Nepal.” HTC
