A nice change this month I am back to sitting at the kitchen table looking out at a sunny garden, tidy for Janet’s efforts working round in the shady parts. It is amazing how everything grows so fast with the right mix of rain and sun, and it seems that this year is a perfect mix for many plants. We have a fig tree which has grown hugely over the past few years, I never see any figs as they ripen when we are not here but our French neighbours enjoy them as a thank you for mowing the lawn. This year the potential crop was so large that it snapped the tree in half leaving a huge branch resting on the roof. After much cutting, sawing and chopping up it is clear and taken to the tip. I did however discover the nasty side-effects of fig sap, it burns so if you have a fig tree be aware, it is very painful. Gardening tips as well this month.
No ramble would be complete these days without reference to our new granddaughter Harriett. We had certainly forgotten how quickly babies change at that age and even in the time since we saw her last, she has started to smile, and this time not due to wind! All those memories come flooding back, even if the advice for new parents is very different to what we were told 30 odd years ago. But of course, we had to cope without the wonder of the internet with an answer, not always to be believed, to almost every concern. How did we ever survive back in those simple carefree days?! We are counting down the days until we have a visit from the younger Willis’s!
After being employed for almost 30 years, running my own business came with a lot of new skills to learn. I have never wanted to be an accountant, in fact I actively avoided it, but understanding that side of things is part and parcel of running a business. Initially in 2013 it was a simple job but with the purchase of Goviers in 2019 and then Havens in 2023 it has got a lot more complicated. The sheer number of products, and suppliers, that we now deal with is mind blowing. What was once a simple operation has become one that needs a lot of looking after. One of our biggest challenges, like every small business, is stock. Having the right stock, hopefully at the right time, and not too much of it. After a year end stock take in June, we found that we had too much of a number of lines and with our warehouse bulging at the seams we decided to have an August sale. The team have put together a selection of the pieces that we would love to see sold to free up space for our new Christmas stock arriving in September so take advantage of the offers and do your Christmas shopping with a discount.
During my time at Royal Crown Derby, we launched an incredible number of new paperweights, many with stories that I could, and maybe one day will, ramble about. These days the focus of the new owner and his team is very much on high end restaurant and hotel fine dining with giftware and paperweights not being a huge part of the business. So the launch of a new paperweight is a very special occasion, especially when it is one like the Imari Cob, a pretty amazing piece. We have been given permission by Royal Crown Derby to produce an exclusive print of the Imari Cob by Carmen Roome, something that we used to do in the past. This will be free with any purchase of the Imari Cob from Goviers.
£15.00 goes direct to each charity.
In the last catalogue we launched the two charity baubles we are doing this year, both in memory of people very close to us. We hope you will support this fund-raising effort as we want to try and make a difference to someone’s life. We might think that the young don’t suffer with heart issues, but the first CRY screening funded by money raised by Anthony’s parents identified three young people with heart conditions which might have led to their untimely death, as such a condition did in the case of their 26 year old son. With screening we can help to reduce avoidable death in young people. Amanda died far too young from breast cancer and we want to support the work of Breast Cancer UK to improve diagnosis and treatment.
Introducing the new Old Imari Solid Gold Band Cob, the latest edition to the Royal Crown Derby Old Imari collection. A breed synonymous with strength and power but also with class and style, Carmen Roome designed the statement piece with intricate details to highlight the beauty of the pattern whilst showcasing the ionic features associated with the breed. The flowing mane, piebald colouring and feathering hair on the legs come alive framed in 22 carat gold.
