Bear with Us .... An Extremely Rare Bear

The Regal Goldie Bear was launched at a memorable event at Ashton-Under-Lyme in 1997. Dermand on the day was so great that Michael Doulton had to calm collectors who were disappointed. It is not often one of these pieces becomes available.

Never has any land found any leader who so matched the hour.

Churchill wears his famous spotty bow tie on this fabulous Goviers Churchill plate. His white ‘British Bulldog’, sits proudly framed by his favourite

butterflies and the shrub rose named after him. His Victory V is enrobed in poppies with two doves of peace, alongside a trio of a land girl, royal marine and home guard, with spitfires and poignant images of the land, sea and air invasion.

Autumnal ramblings…..

Somehow in typical British style I always seem to start with comments about the weather and today is no exception! Rain is certainly the theme of the week in Staffordshire, and many other parts of the country. The view from the office window is not quite as nice as the view from the kitchen in France, and I don’t have a glass of local wine to look forward to later!

Janet and Kayleigh hardly seem to draw breathe between one catalogue going off to the printer and the next being started. The themes change each time, and we try to add something new from existing suppliers as well as adding in new suppliers that we think might be of interest to you. The star of the new suppliers last month was Ceramic Inspirations range of character teapots so we have added more designs into the offering this month. We really love these pieces as the level of detail is amazing and the skill of the makers incredible.

Anniversaries have always played a big part in the life at Goviers and November marks the 150th anniversary of the birth of surely one of our greatest Prime Ministers, Winston Churchill. We had Caroline Dadd design an exclusive ceramic range for us which we have as usual had made in Stoke on Trent, and our pendant is hand made in Birmingham. We have also added pieces from Bairstow Manor Collectables, Anita Harris, Dartington and Caithness. We think the range is a fitting tribute to a truly remarkable man.

We have a very close working relationship with the family run De Rosa studios in Uruguay. Both Jorge and his daughter Agustina have become great friends over the past 15 years that we have known them. Their team of skilled modellers and painters create some of the finest ceramic sculptures we work with. The skill they exhibit in both the making and the hand painting is unrivalled. The range has expanded over the years and some of the pieces have become truly spectacular, but they don’t forget to add new designs in the more affordable ranges too. There are new launches this month which once again are fantastic.

Paddington featured very heavily in my childhood, I am sure that after Swallows and Amazons I remember my father moving on to the adventures of a small bear from Peru and his ever-present marmalade sandwich. I think it is fantastic that the recent feature films, with the most amazing computer-generated imagery of my favourite bear, have brought Paddington to a totally new generation. Merrythought launched their Paddington earlier this year and have now expanded the range with a special Movie Edition bear.

As the nights have started to draw in Janet, Steffi and our other wonderful puzzle loving colleagues, have been getting the jigsaw puzzles out to fill the longer evenings. They have been delighted at the addition of the Victory range of puzzles and they are becoming firm favourites. The new range with less pieces’ appeal to people like me with less patience! Check out the Spitfire puzzle on page 11!

We continue to refresh our unrivalled range of pre-loved Royal Crown Derby paperweights. If there is anything you are looking for, we run a “Wish List’ where we give customers first refusal on any pieces we acquire that meet their requirements. If you have pieces you wish to sell, we will be looking for new collections to purchase next year. We only buy best quality pieces in their original boxes. We understand that Royal Crown Derby are closing the Collectors Guild at the end of this year. Having launched the Guild in 1994 I would love to see if there is some way that as Goviers we can continue to offer enthusiasts of the paperweight range something akin to a collector’s club. Watch this space!

Even though we have yet, as I write at least, to see the supermarket Christmas adverts appear on our televisions we are always festive at Goviers, or so Janet tells me! Even though I am often accused of being a bah humbug I have been taken by more of the Christmas ranges this year than usual. The Newbridge Silver selection we have added this year is lovely, the Georg Jensen is as ever delightful but perhaps not surprisingly it is the Goviers range that has my vote this year. We are hoping that you will support us with our aim of raising some money through our charity baubles for CRY and Breast Cancer UK. Both charities do amazing work to try and reduce the unnecessary loss of life through undiagnosed heart conditions in the young and breast cancer.

£15 goes directly to each charity

My words would not be complete obviously without mention of our Granddaughter Harriett. Now almost four months old she is getting so much taller, as well as being fascinated by everything around her and hates being away from the action! I have no idea where she gets that from! I have a feeling her first Christmas will be a memorable one, for her parents and grandparents if not really for her! We always hope that you like what we include in the catalogue but if you have any suggestions as to things we should add then please do get in touch with us.

Kindest regards

Sir Winston Churchill was 40 when he started painting as a hobby. He painted many scenes from his time at Chartwell his beloved home in the Kent coutryside. One in particular was of the black swans at Chartwell. He painted under various pseudonyms, (Charles Morin, Mr Winter,) so that his paintings could be judged on merit and not his fame.

At the top of the plate border, a V for Victory is enrobed in poppies.

With Certificate

Central on the plate, six spitfires frame an iconic drawing of Sir Winston Churchill wearing his famous spotty bow tie, designed within elements of The Churchill Crest.

“Never has any land found any leader who so matched the hour.”

£345

To commemorate Sir Winston Churchill’s birth Goviers have commissioned this wonderful sixpence pendant. Whilst the sterling silver necklace is completely new, the sixpence was struck from sterling silver 150 years ago by the Royal Mint at Tower Hill, London in 1874. In the 1880’s sixpences were used as tokens of love or as charms. This ‘Extra Fine’ high quality antique sixpence has been polished and set into a handmade pendant with 38 sparkling cubic zirconia in Birmingham’s Jewellery Quarter. Presented in a jewellery box.

Sir Winston Churchill’s relationship with Pol Roger Champagne dates back to 1945 when, during a luncheon, Churchill met Odette Pol-Roger. Each year on his birthday, Odette would send Churchill a case of vintage champagne. Upon his death, Pol Roger put black-bordered labels on all of their bottles destined for the UK and in 1975, Pol Roger named their prestige cuvée after him.

Chawton Cottage Garden Vase

H 25 cm

£1690

Jane Austen’s cottage in the village of Chawton had a charming garden together with beehives, a kitchen garden, an orchard and a shrubbery. Writing to her sister in May 1811 she described it as “very gay with Pinks and Sweet Williams, in addition to the columbines already in bloom. The syringas, too, are coming out….” Kerry’s design features both pale pink pinks (carnations), together with bi-coloured red and white Sweet William – with a soft Regency blush coming from the delicate lilac (syringa).

Chawton Fruit Garden Vase

In Jane Austen’s home in Chawton, fragments of historic wallpaper were discovered in the late 1940s. The vine leaf design dates from about 1800. It is printed in red & ‘Dutch Pink’, a yellow pigment popular in the Regency period. Emma’s vase has a soft, muted colour palette using a soft clotted cream coloured clay. Each of the myriad tiny dots along the stems of each vine leaf have been tubelined by hand, one at a time.

The Wordsmith Vase

H 30 cm

Jane Austen’s surviving manuscripts were written in iron gall ink with a goose-quill pen. Jane wrote at a very small table in her dining room in Chawton and Emma pays homage to the writer with black and white quill feathers, floating above myriad inkwells in shades of dark blue, bottle green and brown.

H 20 cm

£770

Jane Austen, her sister and mother had a thriving kitchen garden at Chawton, as much of what they ate came from the garden and orchard. Emma’s slender vase sees a bountiful supply of ripe, green gooseberries intermingling with raspberries and bright red currants. White fruit blossom stands out brightly against a classic dark blue Moorcroft background, which fades to ivory towards the rim of the vase, as the fruit grow upwards towards the summer light.

Emma’s design features a trio of different coloured hollyhocks ranging from a warm pink, to a deep rich burgundy and a vibrant blue – each bringing a flash of colour to bring cheer to all.

A Life At Sea Vase

H 25 cm

£3475

Designer Paul Hilditch recreates Francis Austen’s lifetime at sea on both a prestigious vase and accompanying plaque. The latter features HMS Elephant setting sail, while a gathering of people watch on in awe from the safely of portside buildings. The limited-edition vase is divided into three panels, the first of which shows HMS Elephant setting sail, while the second depicts HMS Peterel off the coast of Marseille. The third and final scene is of HMS Vindictive off the coast of Halifax in Canada, with the naval base in the background. The vase takes you on a visual journey of over 40 years of naval history and the life at sea that was the making of Francis Austen almost two hundred years ago.

Queens Choice Berries

Queen’s Choice with its succulent grapes, ripe figs and peaches was inspired by Titania’s words from the Bard of Avon’s ‘A Midsummer Night’s Dream’. Here Emma considers William Shakespeare’s prose and verse had it taken place during the Autumn. Peaches now turn from shades of pinkish orange to pumpkin-yellow and leaves dance and unravel in old gold, bright saffron, copper-rose and walnut, with some succulent blackberries for an added autumnal feel.

Autumnal Collection

A dormouse, sleeps softly in a warm nest of oak leaves and dried grasses, dreaming happily of its next meal of ripe acorns to be completed before it drifts gently away into a deep winter hibernation. Designer Nicola Slaney has used autumnal colours ranging from a light moss green, through shades of fawn and into an inspired, deep brown. The box itself is a place that is precious and secure, a safe haven for small, valued treasures, but in another world, that would include a sleeping dormouse.

Hawthorn Feast Tray

Emma has always found wrens to be fascinating birds. Inconspicuously dressed in subtle shades of fawn and brown, their minute size and fast movement make them hard to follow. The Moorcroft wren has just feasted on red hawthorn berries and yet is still reluctant to leave its feast. Instead, it prefers to remain hidden in a canopy of whispering green leaves, all of them about to turn into autumnal colours as summer moves its lazy way into autumn.
