FEBRUARY

The Start of a New Year.

I know it is slightly late but can we all wish you a very Happy & Healthy 2025.

A new year always brings new challenges, and hopefully opportunities. The current economic climate certainly makes it challenging for any small business and we are no different. We recognise that most of what we sell is not an essential, but a treat and we are delighted that you want to buy that special something from us. We try to provide the best service possible with our small team and we like to think it is that, and the great range of products we find, that keeps you coming back to us. We do appreciate it.

The start of the year also brings a raft of new introductions from our loyal and supportive suppliers. We are very lucky that we have suppliers that we think enjoy working with us as much as we enjoy working with them and appreciate the support that we give their brands with what we do. Too many manufacturers seem to think that they only need their own website and that retailers don’t matter. Thankfully most of our suppliers are much more enlightened. You will see that Janet and the team have selected some fantastic new launches for 2025. With it being the Chinese year of the Snake there is obviously a selection of pieces to celebrate the start of this year. Snoopy was one of the stars of 2024 for us and we apologise to many of you who had to wait longer for their pieces than expected. The reaction from collectors worldwide caught Steiff completely by surprise, nostalgia is such a strong emotion and I think this proves that. There are new additions to the Snoopy range which I am sure will be equally popular.

Caithness is a brand with which I have a connection from many years ago. When both Caithness and Royal Crown Derby were part of the Royal Doulton Group I was lucky enough to be Marketing Director for both brands, albeit briefly as I was then seconded to Royal Doulton USA. The commute from Staffordshire to Perth, and occasionally to Caithness, around five hours further north, certainly added some miles to my car and the delicious Scottish breakfasts did not help my waistline! This year Helen MacDonald celebrates 50 years of creativity at Caithness and a new collection has been put together to mark this wonderful achievement. Helen was so generous with her time and knowledge when I was working there, as were all the team in Perth. A superb product made by really nice people.

Love is in the air…..

This year the catalogue timing is ideal for Valentines Day, hopefully landing with time for you to purchase something special for someone special. Obviously, the choice of pieces was left up to the ladies in the office! Lladro is a brand that we have seen an increasing demand for over the past few years so the range we have will be expanding. Maleras is a brand we love working with, great skill and creative thought go into the pieces and the people we work with are some of the nicest in the industry too.

Celebrating 95 years.

Merrythought is 95 years old. A family owned business still making in the UK and still producing world class teddy bears. There is a special piece for this year which I am sure will become a classic. We wish them a very happy birthday and look forward to celebrating 100 years with them in 2030!

With many years of Royal Crown Derby experience within our team it was natural that we would be drawn towards working with rare and discontinued paperweights. After over 5 years of finding and retailing pre-loved paperweights we decided the time had come to expand our pre-loved offering. Over the years we have had many collectors wanting to sell their collections of Halcyon Days enamel boxes but at the time we felt we had enough on our plate. We have now decided that the time is right to add Halcyon Days to our pre-loved selection.

We never put all our eggs in one basket!

Our first collection has taught us a lot and we will no doubt continue learning about the range and what was produced in the past. Many of the older boxes are 100% hand painted, adding to the interest and unique nature of the item. We have checked all the pieces carefully, as we do with all our paperweights, to ensure that they are top quality, being conscious of course that some of these pieces are many years old. We have also sourced stands for the eggs, something which we think is essential for them to be displayed. If you have Halcyon Days collections that you would like to sell, then please get in touch with us as we will be looking for more pieces later in the year.

In our house, and at least one other in our team, puzzles are often to be seen taking over the dining table! If Janet disappears, I can be pretty sure that a few more pieces are going to be going into the latest one she has on the go. The new range of Victory puzzles have proved a big hit here, much testing had to be done over Christmas! I think it is safe to say that they passed the test on two tables.

Every time I sit down to write my few words, I am amazed at the range of pieces that we find to add each month. I hope that there is something in the following pages that sparks your interest and tempts you to pick up the phone or visit our website.

Kindest Regards

Simon and the Goviers & Havens team.

The Tree of Life basket has been inspired by ancient Celtic Mythology and the importance of nature in early Irish life. The Ancient Celts depended on the trees for their day-today existence as the provided a means of shelter, food, heat and even housed wildlife that was once hunted in Ireland. The Celts believed there was a connection between nature and the life beyond, the tree represented a connection between earth and the afterlife, mind and body and the never-ending cycle of life. It is thought they believed that trees held the spirits of their ancestors. The Oak was seen as a towering symbol of nobility, strength, endurance, longevity and wisdom.

Helen MacDonald, born in Caithness, began her career on 2nd December 1974 as a trainee engraver at Caithness Glass in Wick, working under masters like Denis Mann and Paul Ysart. After a decade in Wick, Helen transitioned to the Perth studio as assistant designer to Colin Terris, where she collaborated with Venetian master Franco Toffolo. This experience ignited her passion for integrating colour into her designs, a practice she continues today at the Crieff studio. In celebration of her 50-year career, Caithness Glass is releasing a limited-edition paperweight inspired by her Dancers series.

“Over the years, I’ve enjoyed exploring various techniques to create a range of themes. One of my favourites has been dancers. This occasional series featured Waltzer’s and even Whirling Dervishes, but the most striking was the Flamenco.”

Candlemas Day is an ancient festival that marks the midpoint of winter, halfway between the shortest day and the spring equinox Feverell, has winter pansies in shades of purple and blue flowering against pale white clay, with the centre of the pansies a soft yellow with a fiery orange centre, a subtle nod to the candlelight that brings cheer to us all.

Paul Hilditch features three eagles to mark Inauguration Day on this magnificent vase: the bald eagle, with its face of steely determination and majestic 7-feet wingspan; the Golden eagle, North America’s largest bird of prey, with a penchant for the highest of altitudes; and the Steller’s Sea Eagle, found off the coast of Alaska, an immense eagle with large head and massive orange bill to match.
