A Royal Celebration, and the start of spring. I usually plan to be sitting in France when the time comes for me to write my minor contribution to the catalogue (or “chat” as Janet likes to call it) but once again I am instead staring at a wall in Staffordshire while the rain and wind hammer down! There are certainly signs that spring is on its way but just when you think the worst of the winter is over along comes an icy blast. When the last catalogue landed it gave us our two busiest days ever as you obviously appreciated the sale offers. There is now more room in our warehouse for lots of new products from our existing suppliers as well as new ranges we have found. With an ever-brightening light at the end of the Covid tunnel I hope that we can all look forward to getting back to seeing our families and friends and enjoying a healthy social life again. With the lengthening days and the first signs of spring we thought that the theme for Goviers at Home should also include the garden. We know from talking to you your gardens have played a key part in life over the past 12 months, as they have for us. We try when adding any new ranges to find things that are different and interesting. We will never stop loving the collectables and gifts but At Home gives an opportunity to showcase some of the other great ranges that we find. We hope you like what we have put together, many of the items we have personal experience of and are fans of. Despite the rather bruising time that the Royal Family have had over the past few weeks, at Goviers we want to focus on the positives and what we hope will be a wonderful time of celebration; for both milestone birthdays and the huge achievement of the Platinum Jubilee. We know that many long standing Goviers customers wait with eager anticipation for the next big Royal event and the accompanying commemoratives. The past few years have been a bit lean for such events but now we have a lot to celebrate. We previewed in the last catalogue the start of the ranges we would be offering and the reaction was really gratifying. The Merrythought 95th Birthday Bear is well on its way to be being sold out and demand on the other items, from at home and abroad, has been very strong. With many enthusiastic Royal Crown Derby collectors receiving our catalogues we are sure that the launch of their commemorative range will be much anticipated and we believe that the very small editions of 250 will be sold out within the month. We have secured an allocation for our customers but please get your order to us quickly as we expect demand to be very high.
Our range of special items now includes wonderful hand painted pieces from Moorcroft and Anita Harris as well as superb designs from our friends at Halcyon Days. Many of these are limited and with worldwide demand being generally very high we would urge you to order promptly to avoid disappointment. It is wonderful to see such affection for the Royal family, and particularly the Queen, in so many parts of the world. A lovely antidote to so much that we read, and watch of late. It is just over two years since I first had a conversation with Alan about Janet & I taking over Goviers. It has been a voyage, I hate that much used word “journey”, but one that bar a few stormy moments has, despite the restrictions of late, been amazing. Janet has enjoyed coming out of her enforced retirement and has been able to make use of her creative, and packing talents, in full! We have enjoyed speaking to so many of you and are always happy to chat, as you know. Hopefully in time we will be able to arrange events that allow us to meet some of you again and you to be able to put faces to names on the phone. One of my other great joys is getting some of my old Royal Crown Derby team back together. My time at Derby was generally a very happy one and I was lucky to have had the most fabulous team both in the UK and the USA. Roger Boissier, the previous Chairman of RCD but now sadly deceased, taught me so much and I will forever be in his debt. One thing he said was always employ people you know. How right he was. Amanda joined us for the start of the voyage, Karen hops on and off as we arrive at port for the catalogues to land and Stephanie stepped aboard in November. Despite all knowing us well we were delighted that they still wanted to work with us! We are a small but growing team and we love what we do, and the products and people we work with. I know some people won’t like everything we find but we try to bring some variety and freshness with a keen eye to quality and authenticity. I hope that by the time I next have to write my “chat” we will all be enjoying life and friends just that little bit more. Yours

ELIZABETH WELCH • GLASS SCULPTURES Elizabeth creates highly detailed borosilicate glass sculptures of animals particularly bird, insect and marine life. Each piece is made entirely by hand using coloured borosilicate glass rods which are melted in a high oxygen and propane flame. Each piece is annealed in an electrically controlled kiln for lasting strength and durability. By building layers of opaque and transparent glasses she has developed her own recognisable style of flame worked glass. Her work is highly collectable. The 1920's were the most successful 'Dog years' not only in the toy industry lead by Steiff, but also in the fashion industry. Steiff produced dogs of every breed but their most successful was 'Molly' offered for the first time in 1925. She was a big hit and caused quite a sensation when she outsold the teddy bears! One cold morning designer Helen Dale found her resident blue tit pecking and pushing his way through a large patch of snowdrops in her garden. The flowers were all taller than the bird, and held a bounty of hidden food beneath their white petals for him to discover. Snowdrop 'Ruby's Gold' has a bright yellow flash of colour amongst a sea of white petal drops. An early spring butterfly flutters amongst the snowdrop's petals on Rachel's beautiful vase. Narcissus ‘Tête-à-tête’ is one of the most popular dwarf daffodil varieties available. Standing at only a few centimetres high, its small size makes it ideal for planting in patio containers or at the front of the border. The deep golden yellow flowers appear in early spring, with each stem bearing up to three blooms. In her design, Vicky sweetly places two blooms face to face as if they were serenading each other in an operatic duet, or quite literally a tête-à-tête, a quiet conversation. The Royal Horticultural Society have given this daffodil a prestigious Award of Garden Merit.

With their origins deep in the wild and rugged heart of Kashmir, the arrival of goats in the outskirts of Llandudno is a long and warm-hearted story in its own right. Almost two centuries ago, the people of Kashmir had long since learned that wool from their goats made wonderful shawls and other soft, comfortable knitwear. The goats became fashionable presents for the rich and famous to both give and receive - with some shipped to North Wales. The goats thrived and multiplied on a diet of good Welsh bracken, gorse and coarse grass found in abundance on the rocky slopes of the Great Orme, just outside Llandudno. For almost a century, goats and residents lived in harmony together. The goats rarely came near the town and most townsfolk had long since tired of clambering up a mountain of rock and gravel to see them. That blissful coexistence held good until the Corona virus lockdown. The goats were curious and began to explore. Soon, they discovered the value of empty streets and the Botanical Gardens, as Llandudno’s residents stayed inside their homes, they roamed freely. Designer, Kerry Goodwin has captured this moment in history, with her usual quirky style, to make us smile and remind us how nature reclaimed much of our world when we took a step backward, and quietly watched from our windows.

BELLEEK • RICHARD COOPER The creation of each Belleek basket tells us a story about the amazing art of Belleek basket making. Basket and flower making was introduced to Belleek by William Henshall who came to work for Belleek Pottery in the late 1860s. Over the next forty years he developed the craft and trained the local craftsmen in the necessary skills. These in turn passed their skills down through the following generations to the present day. Each basket comes gift boxed and with a Certificate of Authenticity.

A larger version of this specially designed, hand made oval handled basket was presented in 2012 by the then First Minister Peter Robinson, to Her majesty The Queen as a gift from the people of Northern Ireland to celebrate her Diamond Jubilee. Goviers are delighted to have secured three scaled down replica baskets. Both the original and the replica Queens Royal Gift Baskets were designed by Claire Rowe and created by Belleek Master craftsman John Doogan. This unique basket has been inspired by wild flowers, honey bees, butterflies, ladybirds and dragonflies with a few of Belleek's trademark shamrocks and a lucky four leaf clover. Flax, representing the Irish linen industry, bluebells, honeysuckle, primroses, fuchsia, daisies and wild roses adorn this fabulous basket.

The Four Seasons basket collection is a series of four hand woven baskets celebrating of the intricate cycle of life as it continuously flows through our unique seasons. Each basket represents each season, Spring, Summer, Autumn, and Winter. Each is lovingly adorned with handcrafted flowers which are synonymous with that particular season. At the end of last year we showcased the Winter Flower Basket, here we have the Spring Flower Basket adorned with crocus, bluebell, pansy, lily of the valley and gerbera.

This colourfully decorated Basket has been inspired from local Irish wild flowers and woodlands found in nearby Castle Archdale Forest Park in County Fermanagh. This ancient limestone landscape on the shores of Lower Lough Erne supports a unique mix of wildlife and biodiversity. The hand painted decoration includes pink wild roses, forget-me-nots, thistles and daffodils. A beautiful hand applied butterfly is hidden amongst the foliage also a tiny ladybird and bumblebee.

The Hanako Basket has been patiently hand woven in an organic shape to reflect that of a pond and features hand applied elements depicting acquatic flora and fauna. The longest living freshwater fish ever recorded was a female koi named Hanako, she lived to the grand age of 226. The koi represents longevity, perseverance and abundance. Hand crafted water lilies surround the 'pond' and are a symbol of enlightenment, beauty and purity. Menyanthes, a traditional pond margin plant, represents tranquillity, repose and calmness, whilst the frog overlooking the 'pond'; a symbol of fertility and transformation. In Celtic traditions the frog is seen as healing and cleansing, as well as an emblem of rebirth. This striking basket receives a special backstamp and will only be produced for the year of 2021.
