Welcome to summer.
If I had sat in the office yesterday looking out of the window for inspiration it would have been blue sky and sunshine, and I would have been complaining about the heat. Today I see cloud and no sun but there is still a smile on my face. Janet and I became grandparents for the first time on 21st June and are totally besotted with Harriett Daisy. I am of course biased, but she is the most adorable baby, even when she is sick on my shirt! She and Hannah didn’t have the easiest first week but they were both amazing as was Oliver in stepping up to all the new challenges that fatherhood brings, and more. I am sure that Harriett will be a recurring theme over the next few years and there will be more in a few pages.
In June last year we lost our colleague and friend Amanda to breast cancer at the age of 48. I had worked with Amanda at Royal Crown Derby for many years and then she came to work with me when I set up my own business and then full time with us when we bought Goviers in 2019. None of us knew how ill Amanda was until literally the last two days before she passed away. This meant that her passing was a huge shock and there are many things we wish we had done and said that we didn’t have the chance to. I always wanted to do something to mark Amanda’s short but amazing life and we have finally got that to fruition. Caroline has done a wonderful design for our first charity bauble in aid of Breast Cancer UK. We will be donating £15 from the sale of each bauble to the charity in memory of Amanda so we hope that you will help us support the amazing work they do in supporting anyone battling this terrible disease.
In 2022 one of our son Oliver’s greatest friends Anthony Lane died at the age of 26 while exercising. Seemingly a fit and active young man with a successful career in Formula 1 and a partner he was blissfully happy with, he had an undiagnosed heart condition, something that is far more common than we might think. Far too many young people die from what is usually a treatable condition and so our second charity bauble is in aid of Cardiac Risk in the Young, CRY, who aim to screen as many young people as possible to avoid any more young lives being cut short. The design on this bauble has been adapted from artwork produced by my 93 year old US based Aunty Elisabeth and my cousin Sue, both of whose families have been affected by heart related issues.
Both designs feature a hidden A for Amanda and Anthony
I hope that you will help us support these two wonderful charities by buying these baubles. If you wish to donate more than the £15 we will be sending for each sale then we will have a Just Giving page for each charity, details will be on our website.
£15.00 goes direct to each charity.
If you would like to make a additional donation please contact customer services or our Just Giving Page on our website
Formed in 1995, CRY Cardiac Risk in the Young is a charity that helps to prevent young sudden cardiac deaths through awareness, screening and research, and supporting affected families.
This bauble has been inspired by Mercedes engineer Anthony Lane, from Rugby, Warwickshire, who suffered cardiac arrest aged 26. Anthony was believed to have been living with an undiagnosed heart condition, from which he had no symptoms. A great friend of our son, his death came as a devastating shock to all who knew him. Within the heart on the bauble you will notice the letter A in his memory.
Breast Cancer UK is a charity dedicated to the prevention of breast cancer.
In the Uk approximately 56,000 women and 400 men are diagnosed with breast cancer every year. It is estimated that 1 in 7 women will develop breast cancer in their lifetimes. The likelihood that any one of us can remember someone who has had breast cancer is high. This bauble has been inspired by our dear colleague Amanda who sadly passed away from breast cancer. Within the heart on the bauble you will notice the letter A in her memory.
Returning to a theme. I said that Harriett would be a recurring theme and here she is again!
Special Price on selected Steiff in stock in celebration of Baby Harriett Daisy Willis. Please contact customer services
We have always tried to have a thoughtfully curated collection of gifts for babies but there has been much more focus on that in the past few months! Expect new items to be added to our range, after careful testing by Harriett of course. Kayleigh will need to design a new “Approved by Harriett” logo! As a little celebration to welcome our new addition Janet has selected a range of baby gifts on which we can offer a special discount. Take advantage of our good mood while it lasts!
Royal Crown Derby was part of my life for almost 20 years. In that time, we launched a huge range of paperweights and tableware designs which remain best sellers today. It is great that I now get to see so many of those paperweights coming back to us as pre-loved items. Many have memories attached to them from events in places like Sidmouth, Derby, Toronto, San Francisco and Tokyo.
We are always delighted to be able to find customers the pieces that they missed in the past and our Wish List is a great way to make sure that you get first refusal when we find that illusive piece. We probably have the best selection of pre-loved paperweights in the UK and at the best prices, and with new pieces arriving with us all the time there is always something interesting coming in to stock.
We are always looking for new items to add to the catalogue, this month is no exception. Work never stops at our suppliers to provide us with new pieces to look at from which we select only the best. As well as buying from world class manufacturers we also design and have made in the UK many items that are exclusive to Goviers.
Our bauble collection was launched last year and proved very popular. Caroline has once again done a superb new collection of six baubles including one celebrating the world-famous Potteries where the baubles are decorated. Arnold Bennett, bottle kilns, the canals and the iconic Spitfire, designed by Stoke born Reginal Mitchell all feature. All that is missing is Stoke boy Robbie Williams!
I am always fascinated by craft skills, mainly as I know that I would not have the patience or skill to do what they do. Working with the skilled jewellers to create our latest pieces has been a real pleasure. With imaginative use of lab grown gemstones and intricate mounts they have created cost conscious pieces with the quality and look of items ten times their price, and all made in Birmingham. Merrythought, located within a stone’s throw of Ironbridge, is loved by The Teddy Bear Ladies from The Repair Shop, and we know why. Fabulous quality and attention to detail. Look at their latest Royal pieces and our special book offer.
As we start the gentle run into Christmas, we hope that we have found some pieces you will enjoy for both you and your loved ones. Hopefully the sunshine will return shortly, and we can all enjoy a warm and sunny summer. Kindest regards, Simon, Janet and the Goviers team.

The RHS Lindley Library houses a large series of flower portraits by Henry C. Andrews. Here Emma has been inspired by Rosa spinosissima ‘Nana’ with white large roses, with soft grey shading. This elegant tall vase has a deep blue backgound at the base fading away to pale cream at the rim.
Emma was inspired by a hand-coloured engraving of a rose styled as Rosa spinosissima var. luteola by Henry Cranke Andrews. Nestling in a thicket of dark green foilage, is this delightful pale lemon rose with its cupped, single creamy blooms and prominent yellow stamens.
Numbered Edition
Inspired by a hand-coloured engraving of a rose styled as Rosa × centifolia purpurea by Henry Cranke Andrews, Emma sensationally captures large, fully double blooms of rich purple, with a mustard-yellow central eye under glaze on both a vase and plaque.
Rose Legacy, brings together seven different roses drawn by botanical artist Henry C. Andrews. Among them are: Rosa eglanteria ‘Lutea’, Rosa spinosissima ‘Nana’, Rosa spinosissima var. luteola , Rosa × centifolia holosericea and Rosa × centifolia purpurea. This limited edition prestige vase showcases the beautiful English rose.
The rose is a symbol of love and Rosa × centifolia holosericea by Henry Cranke Andrews with its heart shaped petals adorns this beautiful vase.
by Rachel Bishop
This exceptioal vase showcases Rosa eglanteria ‘Lutea’, a bicolor variety in orange and yellow with raspberry stems and lush-green, serrated leaves, set against a stunning sky blue ground.
Rachel’s red stylised rose, pays homage to the rose designs of Charles Rennie Mackintosh with a dark purple centre and framed with intricate tubelined circles in a myriad of colours.
On this perfect tray the eleagant rose ‘Gracilis’, has a myriad of pink petals set against a classic dark blue Moorcroft ground.
Rachel’s fan shaped mauve carnations set against a rich claret background on the July miniature, are inspired by Arts and Crafts designer William De Morgan.
The warm, pink colour palette of Rosa ferox known for having many thorns, is also known as the ‘fierce’ rose. The underside of their petals are pale pink, whilst at their centre is a golden halo.
