A ramble in the French sunshine. At long last I can say that I am sat in France writing my few words for the catalogue. It has been a long time coming but a little bit of French sun and a croissant for breakfast starts the day off very nicely! The last two years have certainly made us all appreciate what matters to us, allowed us to enjoy our homes and cherish time with family and friends. With all the troubles in the world we all need something to bring us back to some normality. One day I will try to give you a brief glimpse into the work that goes into putting these catalogues together but that will mean Janet allowing me to take a few pictures of her at work. That is not going to be easy! Suffice to say that as soon as one catalogue has been mailed thoughts turn to the next and page plans are started. It is a huge effort and involves all the team at one point or another, thankfully I try to restrict my involvement to this introduction. Once again, the search for new suppliers and ranges has been one of the big challenges. I knew that running Goviers would mean never switching off from work and our latest supplier is testament to that. While enjoying a few days by the Norfolk coast to try and shake off the remnants of Covid we came across Langham Glass. A family-owned business with a wonderful product. We are one of very few stockists of this handmade range and we are delighted that they agreed to supply us. We hope you love the range as much as we do. The reaction to the Murano Glass that we introduce in March was extremely gratifying, so much so that we had to reorder within a week. Thankfully the team in Italy were able to supply what we needed quickly and hopefully all orders were satisfied with little delay. As you will see the designers and skilled decorators at Moorcroft have been extremely busy creating new pieces. It is wonderful that so many of you appreciate the skill and patience needed to create such masterpieces. We are passionate about supporting our local factories in Stoke on Trent and Moorcroft is one of our favourites.

Platinum Jubilee You will see that this month we have a separate catalogue devoted to the Platinum Jubilee. I have had the opportunity over the past few weeks to talk to various members of the press both here, and much to my surprise, from France, about the tradition of collectables for Royal events and the once in a lifetime event of a Platinum Jubilee. The range of quality items on offer for this event has been much smaller than for previous Royal events which I think is a huge shame. The result of this has been that demand for what is available has been way above what anyone expected, this has led to delays with supply, and I would like to apologise most sincerely for the wait on many items. Rest assured all the factories are working as fast as they can to catch up. I was delighted to have the opportunity to show reporters from a major press agency, The Daily Mirror and French TV network TF1 around the Stoke based factories that we use to make our own Goviers exclusive

ranges. I think they were all amazed at the skill and time involved in producing even a beaker. Hopefully readers and watchers will get a better understanding of these unique products in the run up to the celebrations.

As the days lengthen and we see a little bit more of the sun the wedding season seems to start in earnest. With a wedding in the family next year, we are taking more of an interest in the process than we might have in previous years. Finding quality gifts which will remind the happy couple of their big day is never easy but we have tried to find a selection that we think fits the bill. I have to say that after almost 34 years I struggle to remember all the gifts we had but one or two are still in daily use! I was amazed the other day when my mother’s 90-year-old friend Kate reminded me that she was at our wedding, her memory of that day is certainly better than mine!

We try where we can to find the best suppliers for each type of product and are delighted when those suppliers are based in the UK. The Carrs range of Platinum Jubilee pieces that we showed for the first time in the last catalogue has certainly been well liked and we are pleased to be able to add to the range that we have on offer. As the name suggests, rockhopper penguins are named

for their behaviour on land. Captured in three charismatic poses, this Moorcroft rockhopper first peeps cheekily behind to himself, with wings pinned to his chest and flattened, flippers pulled together, he prepares to move. A showman, sporting striking bright yellow eyebrows with clown-like long, yellow feathers extending off the sides of the head, he first straddles the rock. As he lifts up his wings, and allows his head feathers to toss wildly like seaweed in the foam the second pose is complete. Finally, he turns to reveal his profile, complete with wings clasped behind his back, and eyes glinting.

Daisy’s grow every spring,

and for many people they represent innocence and fun. They are the birth flower of April, and so April’s Innocence was born.

cilla verna, commonly known as spring squill, is a plant native to Western Europe. The dainty perennials bring a violet-bluish haze to the coastal cliffs from March onwards as these star-like flowers thrive in wild places where winds beat the cliffs with spray. Particularly found on the west coast of Great Britain, it shelters in short dry grassy areas, near to the sea, bringing early colour to the coastline.

a darkened cove. Through a canopy of trees, you glimpse the smugglers, with swords and knives at the ready in leather scabbards. Is the vessel holding friends or foes as well as casks of brandy, tea and tobacco? Paul’s design brilliance allows us to be the silent witness to the unfurling scene. This could be the infamous Piskey’s Cove, where John Carter “The King of Prussia” landed his smuggled goods. Can you hear the desperate, hushed, voices of the smugglers as they disappear silently into the night’s shadows to hide their stolen loot? With their hoard safely secured in hidden caves that would remain dry on a neap tide, we follow their pernicious plan. The design is completed with the smugglers carrying and scraping their casks on cobbled streets, as they offload their contraband.

Puffins are unmistakable and

very popular visitors to Staffa, a small island off the west coast of Scotland. They usually arrive during the first few days of April and stay through May, June and July during which time they form pairs, mate, lay a single egg and rear their chick. During the first month of their stay they spend a lot of time in the water but gradually spend more time ashore, just as they are seen in Vicky’s design.

beak into the air as he perches on the bulbous finial of a wrought iron gate. Behind him, a straight path and manicured hedge leads to the frontal façade of a sleepy red bricked house. Above, streaked silver birch twist and curl as if defying the clean architectural lines, and curiously mimic the black-capped and white breasted markings of the Nuthatch. Below, a little mouse can be seen scurrying into a thicket of ripe, plump blackberries.

Journey away from the path leading directly to the entrance and towards the rear of the property, where an orangery lies in the distance, past an ornamental birdbath. A Jar of Nuthatches take centre stage as they peck into the blackberry thicket, balancing on the wrought iron railheads.

On muddy seashores, estuaries,

coastal mudflats and along the shorelines of the British coast, from April to July, English Scurvygrass can be found. As its unusual name suggests, this plant is full of Vitamin C, a deficiency of which causes the condition known as ‘Scurvy’ – something often associated with sailors in years gone by. Here the white flowers dance before a summer-blue ocean and a warm setting sun – a real tonic to any ailments brought on by a long winter and a lack of sunlight.

ne of the most distinctive of albatrosses, known for their dark ‘burglar’ facemask and aerial grace, Kerry’s Sooty Albatross sits with her bill tucked under her dusky, chocolate-brown wings observing her brood of soot-colour fledglings from her broken white eye-ring. As the wild grass curls around the nest, you are drawn to the seascape from a crow’s nest perspective, and you begin to tumble hundreds of feet over the sheer, jagged cliff edge and down to the tranquil sea below. Overhead, a male soars over the island with long, narrow wings, and wedge-shaped tail. Interestingly, as you circle the vase, you find two further sooty albatrosses nestled among Antarctic flora and you begin to hear the shrieks from the crowded cliff face as you are absorbed into the world of the Sooty Albatross.

BACK DANE TRUST COLLECTION NEW

Moorcroft designers Kerry Goodwin and Emma Bossons were asked to create designs for the

Back Dane Trust, a small volunteer-run charity that owns a converted farmhouse, Back Dane, in the Peak District National Park. It is situated in an area of outstanding beauty at the edge of Cheshire, Staffordshire and Derbyshire. The Trust describes its purpose as providing ‘educational and recreational facilities for those in need, or those who are disadvantaged in some way.’ With its own nature trail, deciduous woodland, riverside area, wildflower meadow, fire pit and sensory garden, nature is allowed to unfold and heal.

ack Dane’s diverse natural habitat, which encourages a rich variety of wildlife from buttercups, wood anemones and bluebells in the meadows and pied flycatchers taking up residence in the bird boxes made and erected by children, offers a treasure trove of design inspiration. While funds for each piece sold within the Back Dane Collection, will help the Trust in its work, Moorcroft also believes that these pieces of art pottery, each as individually and beautifully created as those that enjoy Back Dane, will offer you a sanctuary through the natural world. Affectionately known as ‘Hen and Chickens’ due to the egg-yolk yellow flowers and reddish buds, these small clusters of flowers are always set to delight young minds. With a wink and a smile, Kerry draws the flowers up the vase until the tiny seed pods at the rim of the vase look distinctly like bird’s feet or claws, just as their name suggests.

he red fox is an almost surreal sight to behold, with their large ears, narrow nuzzle and vibrant red coats complete with exquisitely shaped faces. Where Foxes Dare holds a solitary fox traversing his way through the moonlit Back Dane wood, and casting a shadow under the mighty oaks. Mirrored by a vixen, as if frozen in another world, her vibrant orange coat and bushy tail curves like the boughs of the trees that shelter her three young cubs. Not only are these mysterious creatures a beautiful vision, this skulk represents provision and protection, as the dog fox seeks out food for his young family and the vixen guards her cubs. BACK DANE TRUST COLLECTION The Pied Wagtail is a firm favourite to visitors to the

farm. Not unlike the children, this is an active little creature, complete with long-tail and black and white bird plumage. When not standing and frantically wagging their tails up and down, they can be seen dashing about across the farm and over to the River Dane, and this is just where Kerry’s pair are set in clay, feeding on both water level and aerial invertebrates. In winter, the pied wagtails stay close to home, feeding on seeds left out near their Back Dane birdhouse.

in Somerset since 1914, was recently spotted by the Somerset Rare Plants Group near the ancient man-made Sweet Track, on the Somerset Levels. The Sweet Track, whose location is kept secret, is an ancient timber trackway that runs between Shapwick and Westhay. In Rachel’s design, she trails lesser water plantain from the secret trackway up into a deep evening sky. Visitors to the flowers come in the form of two garden tiger moths. This night-flying moth has a chocolate-brown, furry body, brown-and white-patterned forewings, and bright red hindwings.

She fell in love with an Italian artist, who took the young woman to Italy. She found her new home in Capena, a medieval village north of Rome. Luxury W edding G ifts T hey W ill C herish Burleigh use traditional skills and techniques, the highest-quality raw materials and their dedicated team of craftspeople to create their classic and timeless tableware, just like they did 171 years ago. Burleigh are the last pottery in the world to use the skilled technique of tissue transfer printing, which forms an entirely unique and beautiful finish. This intricate decorating process begins with printing from an engraved copper roller onto very fine tissue paper. Each transferrer expertly hand cuts each design to size and places onto biscuit-ware shapes. Once the design is applied, it is rubbed in to place with a brush and soft soap; transferring the elegant Burleigh pattern from the tissue to the pottery. The tissue paper is then washed away to leave only the printed design on the pottery.
