There are certainly signs that summer is over, and autumn is starting to creep round the corner. The nights are drawing in, the trees are starting to turn, and the evenings are noticeably cooler. Our summer has not quite been the one we had planned; illness and the rather sudden death of my mother have taken the gloss off the lovely weather and plans we had. With my mother’s passing I no longer know that at least one person reads my ramblings, and singles out her favourite pieces for comment. Like many born in the 1930’s my mother had a simple upbringing but appreciated the finer things in life, particularly quality china. Having spent her holidays from University working in a china shop in Brecon she had a keen eye and an appreciation of fine workmanship.
In our last catalogue we showed the most expensive piece I think ever shown in a Goviers catalogue, our exclusive diamond ring. Although certainly not for everyone it was a superb example of the skills in the Birmingham Jewellery Quarter. We have once again been working with our team there to create some interesting and highly attractive pieces. So many of us have the utmost admiration for our Queen: her fortitude in difficult times, her extreme patience during trying times and her ability to always look just as we would expect our monarch to appear whatever the occasion. Obviously, she has the most fantastic collection of jewellery to choose from but there are certain pieces that appear very regularly and are known to be her favourites. The latest addition to the jewellery collection is inspired by the Queen’s favourite earrings, originally made for Queen Victoria. Something truly special and created in the heart of Birmingham.
As always, I am sitting looking out of the window for inspiration and today the view includes a rather large puddle and constant rain! Janet has been particularly busy as it is the time of the year that we start to think about Christmas gift giving. I know it seems early but with so many of our suppliers closing their order books from Christmas ranges very early we had to plan Christmas 2022 as we were still clearing up from Christmas 2021! We are always on the hunt for new suppliers that offer something different and something that is not in every shop or on every web site. Our separate gift catalogue will hopefully help you with those difficult gift giving decisions. You will notice we now have a superb range of soap, made in the UK, and as we like to ensure the quality of what we sell, tested by the team and thoroughly approved of. We are using Pineapple & Pink Lotus at present! We also have the Mele jewellery box which we love, and we hope you will too, I know that is something that would have had my mother telling me of her first jewellery box!
I often wonder if that is where I got my love of all things ceramic from.
Steiff never seem to be lost for new ideas and demand for their ranges is such that if we don’t order the day we get the information, we are often too late to secure pieces. With new launches coming throughout the year Janet must keep her eye out. The standout pieces this time include the Elton John and “Queen” bears, demand for these is bound to be high as they are both such popular musicians. The series will also include two other iconic bands from the 60’s in due course. Certainly a set to have.
I am sure that we have all been concerned for the health of Her Majesty, I for one think that she is amazing for her age. Why should she not expect her outgoing and incoming Prime Ministers to travel to her, rather than her to them, at 96 she has the right to a holiday! With the dust settling on the celebrations for her

Janet and Hannah, our soon to be daughter in law, are both keen doers of a jigsaw. A table always has to be clear to allow the odd puzzle to be underway and one waits ready to be started as soon as this catalogue goes to print! It is therefore great to see that so many of you share their passion. Our first Goviers jigsaw, the Platinum Jubilee, was amazingly popular and we hope our two latest designs will also be ideal for the longer evenings. The Christmas puzzle has been a joy to work on.

Platinum Jubilee, 70 years since she ascended to the throne upon the death of her father, thoughts turn to the 70th anniversary of the Coronation. We were asked why there had been no prestige hand painted item for the Platinum Jubilee so we decided that for the Coronation we should address that. Caroline has been working with the factory in Stoke on Trent to create something special to add to the Goviers range. A small, limited-edition box with hand painted details. We hope this will be a fitting tribute to the skills in the Potteries and to her Majesty.

Here is Goodwood in its racing glory days, where giant haystacks, canvas tents and the old airfield tower were a stone’s throw from the track, with no barriers from the speed and the noise. The nostalgic little Frogeye Sprite racing cars, with their double curvature Plexiglass windscreen, are captured on this apt squatshaped vase, flying past, with one driver spinning at the hairpin and another taking avoiding action.
The unmistakable Bugatti-Blue in this garage reveals a super-car of dreams, the Type 35, which was able to achieve a top speed of around 130 mph, a significant speed in its day. The engine sat in a conventional Bugatti chassis, renowned for its light weight and nimble handling. Here the sports car is pictured complete with driver in all his racing attire, during a hive of activity, a wheel change. The distinctive Bugatti blue colour, is cleverly captured here in metallic oxide paints.

The Himalayan poppy was discovered in 1912 by Lt. Col. Frederick Marshman Bailey, during the exploration of the Tsangpo river gorge in Tibet. Like the gushing waters of the river, Tibetan Dream rotates from the rim of the vase in swirls holding deep-blue centres and sky-blue petals against a midnight blue ground colour, resting the poppies on clouds of brilliant white.

Weaving its lazy way through the Pennines’ hills and valleys, the Churnet Valley railway was completed in 1849 and finally closed 139 years later in 1988. It is now run by The North Staffordshire Railway Society.

Historically the harvest moon, or song moon as it is sometimes known, falls in September. For centuries the song moon has shone down at a time of great activity and hard work, extending harvesting hours and enabling people to forage in woodlands for berries and mushrooms longer into the cooling autumn evenings. Here under a canopy of trees, hidden amongst the woodland floor, wild mushroom varieties such as Velvet Shank and Leaf Parachute grow. In the growing twilight, trees trunks become silhouettes against the autumnal sky.
Ephemeral River embodies a river song from the beginning of time, where a river meanders rigorously through lines carved out by glaciers, sweeping away the 1920s Moonlit Blue trees, to reveal colossal scots pines with bitter-chocolate trunks, and clouded branches soaring into the ether. Dramatically, an amber and marmalade tinged sky seeps into the waters from above the ephemeral river.

Mr Bramble a lone, brown hare is hidden within the freshness of soft-green brambles, circled by fruity burst of maroon to deep burgundy blackberries. Sitting pensively, he listens to a rustle within the thicket.
Pannage allows local folk to free their domestic pigs to roam the New Forest every September when acorns and other nuts fall from the trees. Under the shadow of ancient oaks, this design holds a trio of pigs scouring the forest to eat up all the acorns and nuts. Balancing neatly on an overhanging branch, a grey squirrel clutches an acorn from above the feasting hoard, happy at least, that some chestnuts have already been stowed away.
The name of the dormouse has the same origin as the French word dormir which means ‘to sleep’ and colloquially the dormouse is known in Britain as ‘the sleeper’. Remarkably, they can spend as much as seven months of the year asleep. Vicky Lovatt’s adorable sleeper, with tiny toes tucked into his warm hazel coat, is tightly curled up at the neck of the vase, hidden within the russet-toned thicket. On the reverse of the vase, a startled dormouse soon settles down to feast on hazel-nuts that deck his woodland home.

Beech, oak and silver birch cascade down the steep-sided bank as late autumn takes hold of this ancient woodland and trees give-up their final flourish of colour to the woodland floor. A couple holding hands walk their small grey dog, happily ferreting for seasonal finds, towards a reservoir. The first ring in this collection is inspired by a design most cherished by H.M.Queen Elizabeth II. The original design was briefed by Prince Philip in 1946 to a London jeweller, and made from the metal used in his mother’s tiara. In 1947 this was to become H.M. Queen Elizabeth II’s Engagement ring.
The 2ct centre stone is 8mm, with 12 stones (6 either side) totalling a quarter of a carat in the shoulders of the ring. The Goviers H.M. Queen Elizabeth II ring has been handcrafted using traditional jewellery making techniques in Birmingham’s Historic Jewellery Quarter, the home of the UK’s Jewellery crafts since the 17th century. It is only available until December.
Each ring is individually made to order with four main stone options. These stunning rings can have a; 2 carat SI 8mm diamond, 2 carat 8mm white topaz, 2 carat 8mm blue sapphire, or 2 carat 8mm Brazilian amethyst centre stone.

Goviers are thrilled to launch their Victoria Earrings with three stunning white topaz stones (6mm cushion, 8mm cushion and 12mm x 8mm teardrop) totalling approximately 12 carats per pair, set in 9ct white gold. Inspired by earrings originally owned by Queen Victoria who left them to the Crown on her death in 1901. They were originally made with diamonds taken from the ‘Timur Ruby Necklace’ and they are known to be one of H.M. Queen Elizabeth II’s favourite earrings and were worn at the Coronation in 1953. They had also been worn by Queen Mary at the 1911 Coronation and the Queen Mother at the 1937 Coronation. So favoured were these earrings that they appear on all British coinage today. The Queen is often seen wearing the earrings that have been part of Royal history for more than 150 years.

The casting process requires fifty separate mould parts, each has to be filled with liquid clay by hand and each mould carefully opened once the clay has hardened.
