Royse City College and Career Academy LEADing the Way!
February 2022
Steele's Scoop: Over the last few months we have talked a lot about college readiness, and steps students should take to prepare for their future, but what does CCMR really mean to schools? Why is it important to understand and how do schools prepare students for the many opportunities that are waiting for them in a few short months? College Career Military Readiness, or CCMR, is not new. Schools have been preparing students to be “Future Ready” for decades. The definition of future ready and how schools prepare students is what keeps changing. There are a few key ways the Texas Education Agency determines students to be college ready. 1. Earn qualifying scores in English and math on one of the college readiness exams: TSIA, ACT, SAT or in a College Prep course. 2. Make a 3 or higher on Advanced Placement exams. 3. Earn an associate degree. 4. Complete a dual credit course (9 hours or more in any subject or 3 hours or more in ELA or math). 5. Complete and OnRamps course in any subject and earn college credit. 6. Earn an industry-based certification. 7. Graduate with completed IEP and workforce readiness. 8. Earn a Level I or Level II workforce certificate. 9. Graduate under an advanced degree plan and be identified as a current special education student. 10. Meet with a military recruiter and enlist in the United States Armed Forces

High school is difficult enough for students with the pressures of friends, athletics, and the stress that everyday life brings. Our counselors work tirelessly to determine what plan and what path is the best fit for each student so their future is ready for them! Here at RCCCA our students have every opportunity to become CCMR in preparation for their future educational goals. By the time students graduate, it is our hope that every student has achieved one or more CCMR checkpoints that are aligned with their goals and they feel confident to step out on their own and begin their journey into the world!

Taylor's Tales: February signals the end of registration. Once the counselors have completed entering your course selections, you will be given access to review them. Courses should be ready by the end of February, make sure that you are happy with the classes that you selected. It is always a good idea to review your course selections with your parents/guardian. The adult in your life may have some different thoughts about what you should be taking next year to improve your college portfolio. Remember that you are able to make changes to your selections until May 2nd. To drop or add a course next year, simply email your counselor with a list of corrections/changes or go by your house office and set up an appointment to discuss your options. Another reminder, in order to take an AP or honors course you must complete the appropriate contracts. Here is the link for those of you who may have forgotten to complete these forms. https://www.rcisd.org/Page/796 Remember to select the honors or AP contracts for the 2022-2023 school year.

Are you College Bound? 12th Grade: 1. Complete your FAFSA! Remember this is a high school requirement. If you need help, please see your counselor! 2. Scholarship, scholarships, scholarships. Check for new scholarships each week. You should be completing at least one scholarship a week. 3. Review housing options at your university. It is time to put your deposits down. 4. Notice…Notice..Notice..come by B116 with a copy of your college acceptance letters and put your name in the drawing for great COLLEGE GEAR GIVEAWAY! We want to acknowledge your achievements, don’t miss out. 11th Grade: 1. Ace your classes. Junior year is often touted as being the most important year from a college admissions standpoint. This is entirely true in the sense that junior year is given the most weight in the eyes of admissions officers and an upward trajectory over your four years of high school is looked upon favorably.. 2.

Continue creating your college list. Gather basic information about each college. I find that the location, type, and size has the greatest influence on your success in college. Make a list of things you want in college. For example, Do they have a football/basketball/baseball/soccer team? Does the campus have an active student body? Visit your top colleges. Did you know that you have 2 excused absences as a junior to visit and tour college campuses. Simply bring a note from the universities that you are touring to excuse your time away from school. The universities are very aware that school offer this options and will, many times, ask you if you need a note for school. If you have not taken the SAT or ACT, you need to sign up! Below are the links. ACT: https://www.act.org/content/act/en/products-and-services/the-act/registration.html SAT: https://satsuite.collegeboard.org/sat/registration Sign up for test prep.
10th and 9th Grade: 1. Ace your classes Freshman and Sophomore years count toward cumulative GPA calculations and impacts class rank, two factors that will play a major role in selective college admissions. Trying to recover from a 2.3 GPA as a 9th grader is, from a purely mathematical standpoint, an uphill battle. 2. Honors Track Students who wish to have all collegiate options down the road will need to take a rigorous course load, beginning in 9th grade. 3. Become active in your school community. Freshman and Sophomore years are great times to experiment with extracurricular activities. You DO NOT need to join activities just for the sake of compiling a long resume. The goal is to establish roots within areas of genuine interest where you desire to one day rise to a position of leadership and responsibility. Admissions officers are not going to be impressed by an applicant who dipped their toe in a dozen activities and committed to none. Rather, they wish to see an applicant who, perhaps after some early exploration, plunged shoulder-deep into a few meaningful endeavors. 4. Begin to explore your interests. Most school systems have a sequence of college/career/personality surveys they will administer to students beginning in late-middle or early-high school. Ask your guidance counselor for assistance with this.
