Royse City College and Career Academy Leading the Way!

November 2021

Steele's Scoop: As October comes to an end, we are in the push for seniors to complete the FAFSA (now a graduation requirement), and their college applications through ApplyTexas! We dedicated October 26th to seniors for this purpose alone. Texas A&M University Commerce joined us for the day to help seniors complete the FAFSA and their applications to the colleges of their choice. We are so thankful for the wonderful partnership we have with TAMUC! During this day, we also took the time to help students complete their resumes, search for scholarships, learn how to order their high school transcripts through Parchment and how to order their TSIA scores. Balfour also talked to the seniors about graduation caps and gowns! When the month of November rolls around, students only have about seven weeks left of the college fall semester! That’s just long enough for maybe 1-2 more papers to write and about two more tests before final exams. The week of Thanksgiving Break is a great time for students to write those papers to stay on top of their college course work. The Big Brother Big Sister mentors met together with their Littles for a Mixer this month, and the topic was STRESS and how to cope. We have focused a lot on seniors since school started. Junior parents, we have College 101 Night just for you coming up Monday, November 15th at 6:00pm! We are going to focus on the SAT, what’s a good score, college lists, your student’s rank, and what that means, and so much more. Make plans to be here, don’t miss it! - Nikki Steele

Taylor's Tales: Happy November everyone! It seems like school just started and it is already November which means it is time to register for the 2022-2023 school year! That’s correct, registration across the high school has started! Students are meeting one on one with their counselor and choosing classes for next school year. Don’t worry parents, the choices your child is making now will be available for you to review in the Spring. You will have all of second semester to make any changes that you deem necessary to your child’s selections. I would also invite you to meet with your child’s counselor or academic advisor if you have questions or any concerns regarding your child's selections. The biggest question that I am asked regarding registration is why does the school start so early? This is really an easy answer, we want to make sure that the classes that interest your child will be available next school year. This may mean that the administration will have to move teachers around or hire new teachers in order to offer specific courses. This may mean searching for just the right teacher who will fit your child’s needs. Remember that we are in the business of children and trust that we have your child’s best interest at heart. Happy children make a happy school. Enjoy your Thanksgiving and this special time with family and friends.

-Linda Taylor

Are you College Bound? 12th Grade: Seniors should be finalizing their college plans. What college will you call home for the next 4 years? November is the time to work on Freshman Scholarships that come directly from the different colleges. Most Freshman Scholarship deadlines start in December, so students should use Thanksgiving break to complete those essays that are required for these scholarships. To find all the scholarships that are offered at your college or university: 1. Go to the universities website 2. In the search bar, type “Freshman Scholarships.” Students should apply for every scholarship that applies to them. Remember that most of the money that students receive for college comes from the university themselves. Don’t put this off! 11th Grade: This month, juniors need to research careers. A great way to start your career search is completing the Interest Profiler on Texas Career Check. By completing an interest inventory, students are introduced to careers that they may not have even thought of or heard about before now. This is the first step in planning for the future. Visit: Texas Career Check 10th and 9th Grade: High School freshman and sophomores should be hitting the books! This is your last push to get those grades where you want them for this semester. So many younger classmen do not know the impact that grades have on their GPA and class rank. Every day upperclassmen tell me that they wish they would have worked harder as freshman and sophomores. For those of you whose goal is to graduate in the top half of your class, will want to give extra attention to the following classes:

Freshman English 1 Algebra 1 Biology World History Foreign Language 1

Sophomore English 2 Geometry Chemistry US History Foreign Language 2
