After spending the majority of winter huddled in the warmth of my apartment, I am overjoyed to come out of hibernation to welcome you to the New York City Spring 2016 edition of The Missing Manual. This issue features content by my team of contributors, as well as myself, that will make travelling and living in the Big Apple a little more enjoyable. We have put together curated lists and articles describing the best restaurants, bars, and retail spots for your knowledge, in our opinions; you never know where you might end up in the city! The reason I am so excited about the NYC edition of MM, is because I am in love with the city and everything it has to offer. Four years ago, I interned for jewelry designer Yuvi Alpert in Chinatown and had to learn my way around the city pretty quickly. On my offtime, I would have really appreciated a guide to how the locals spend their city life so I could have discovered more hidden gems. Living in New York City allowed me to explore the concrete jungle burrough by burrough, from a local’s perspective instead of from a tourist’s. I met some of the most interesting people and had some amazing experiences that left me with a lifetime of memories. My hopes for this issue of The Missing Manual is to inspire travellers and locals alike to “get off the beaten path” and really look for the treasures of New York. ENJOY!

Breakroom Burgers Neighborhood: Chinatown What is Breakroom? Breakroom is a restaurant that opened up in November and has already got the burger world buzzing over their super-stacked, messy burgers. Breakroom is a very small food shack, you order at the counter and sit at the bar. Seating is very limited, but eating at the bar is a lot of fun. The owners of the place are incredibly friendly, and make you feel at home.
14
What to order? The mint lemondade for a your drink is the way to go it’s sweetened with a homemade honey syrup and absolutely spectatcular. Next, order the 3 for $10 Taco Platter, tempura fish, pork belly, and grilled steak are the recommended tacos, and are amazing. Lastly you HAVE to get the breakroom fries.. Perfectly crisp and seasoned fries, tater tots, cheesey goodness all around, a sunny side up egg, AND bacon crumbled over with some jalepenos, need I say more?
Mulberry Project Neighborhood: Little Italy What is the Mulberry Project? This new Little Italy speak easy has taken the lead on the drinking trend of custom-crafted cocktails. In addition to the delicious drinks menu there’s just a chalkboard listing the fresh fruits of the day. You tell mixologist what you like and want and they will bring you something with an exciting twist.
What to order? Prefer citrus? Try a pomelo sour. Dark and spicy? Here’s a cucumber-chipotle whiskey daiquiri. The combinations will vary from day to day and bartender to bartender, but the cocktails, all $14, are always beautifully executed. For dinner or an accompanying snack you can get small plates like braised short ribs, fried Brussels sprouts and braised octopus.

Jewelry designer Kendra Scott started her business 13 years ago in her spare bedroom with only $500; today, she has 39 stores around the country, and New York City is next on her list of territory to conquer After her stepfather passed away from brain cancer, Scott opened a hat store in hopes of helping women going through chemotherapy. After 5 years of trying to make it in the hat business, Kendra found that she was more passionate about the jewelry she made on the side and decided to move forward with that. By 2010 Kendra Scott had built up a steady customer base and was selling wholesale to stores like Nordstrom. But this was not enough. Her goal was to build a brand that could not only stand tough economic times, but flourish in them, and her strategy involved three simple tasks: building her own retail space, getting involved with e-commerce, and working directly with her customers. After making these changes, the brand is thriving. At the end of 2015, the company was at $150 million in revenue, which Scott and her team attributed to the enormous growth in customer connections. Customers who visit a Kendra Scott brick-and-mortar store will leave feeling relaxed and taken care of. Guests are not only encouraged to try on the jewelry displayed but allowed to completely customize their piece of choice. An in-house “Color Bar” allows shoppers to make custom pieces from 40 different stones and metal finishings, all done on a 55” touch screen.

Add a Pop of Color to Your Wardrobe This Spring! There are infinite reasons black and its fellow neutral hues are so easy to throw on: They match pretty much every color, they're a great placebo for days we just don't feel our best, and they make putting together an outfit so simple. But after a while, even the all-black-everythingkind of girl will find herself daydreaming of a pop (or two) of color. You can easily do this by pairing a simple colored tank dress to spice up your everyday outfit. Karlie Kloss has sported this fabulously chic look, you can too! Another simple and easy way to add some color to your closet this spring is by adding a floral or geometric print skirt with a fun graphic tee for a casual cute everyday look. Leandra Medine was recently seen rocking this style. Fringe, Fringe, Fringe! We cannot get enough Fringe this season. But now you can take it to a whole other level with a fab colored fringe skirt! 32

ZERO WASTE Daniel is known for his passion for zero waste and protecting nature seem to be the major sources of inspiration both for his creations as a fashion designer, as well as an illustrator. Most importantly he manages to weld the two. Daniel Silverstein’s vision of ‘zero waste’ is rarely, if ever echoed in the world of clothing design. The conscientious designer is committed to making beautiful items that generates no waste by making sure that no scrap of fabric is ignored. The steps Silverstein is taking is a refreshing change from the industry norm where waste and textile pollution are taking over and designers are end up getting rid of 15% to 20% of the materials they use. According to Daniel finding ways to use the leftover fabric scraps allows him to push his creativity by finding ways to implement the leftover shapes. Silverstein is committed to promoting responsible consumption by the fashion industry while demanding quality designs and products from his eponymous collection but his zero waste philosophy doesn’t stop there, Zero waste is the goal of both the garments and the studio. He uses recycled and recyclable materials in shipping, packaging and office materials as well as a zero waste mindset in every day company life, eliminating trash wherever possible. Along with being interested in making social and environmental changes in the fashion industry, Daniel has donated his time and pieces from his collection to help raise funds for Dress for Success and Jersey Battered Women’s Service. He is currently volunteering at The Fashion Industry of Technology as a guest critic offering advice and internships to aspiring designers and mentoring them in a zero waste environment. COPPER WALL HANGING BY CONNELLY RHEA
Our Apartments are our escapes from everyday life and no one wants to be in a boring space. Well, your walls don’t have to be bare any longer with this adorably chic Copper wall hanging… and to make it better It’s super easy and affordable to make, and can even be used as a fabulous gifting opportunity!
Here’s what you will need: -25 yards of 1/2" (size 5) Cotton Piping -3 copper pipes measuring 1/2" x 2' -19 copper couplings 1/2" -4 copper tube caps 1/2" -scissors -a hack saw -a file
48
STEPS: 1. Start off by cutting off an 18" length of cotton piping, then tie a knot onto one of the copper bars, approximately 4 inches from one end (images 1 and 2). Then cut off the excess piping to about 3/4" (images 3). Next, tie another knot around the second copper pipe so that the two copper pipes were about 6" apart (image 4).
49
DIY // Home
2. From there tie another knot 6 inches down the cotton piping, add on one of the copper couplings and secure it with another knot directly below that. Finally, trim the and excess cotton piping at the bottom to a 3/4" tail like the top., 3. Follow the same steps for each subsequent row increasing the length of the cotton piping by about 3" each time until you hit the center. Continue from there decreasing the length by 3" each time to match the opposite side. 4. To create the design in the middle, cut down the remaining 1/2" x 2' copper pipe into three pieces using the hack saw (the two small ones measuring 5" long and the middle one 7.5" long). Be careful with the edges of the cut pipe, use the file here to smooth out any sharp edges. To finish it all off I placed the tube caps on each end of the two copper pipes and voila, that is it!

CLUTCH TUTORIAL BY CONNELLY RHEA
“We could all use a simple clutch to dress up any outfit but sometimes it is hard to justify going out and dropping serious cash to get the look you want, well your search is now over. This DIY clutch will give you the style you’re looking for without breaking the bank! Just switch out the fabric to get a different look.”
STEPS: 1. Cut your fabric, your lining and your interfacing. You should have 2 rectangles of each, 15”x18’ for the fabric and lining, and 12”x15” for the interfacing.
Materials: -1/2 yard faux fur fabric (I found mine in the blanket fabric section of Jo-Ann's) -1/2 yard lining (I used a heavy weight woven blend from Fabric.com) -1 package of heavy weight iron-on interfacing (purchased at Jo-Ann's) matching thread -14" industrial zipper (purchased at Jo-Ann's) -small square of faux or real leather (c/o leather hide store)
52
2. Using the instructions on the package, adhere your interfacing to the wrong side of your fur fabric pieces. Center them so you have room to sew around the edges on all four sides 3. Take one piece of fur and one piece of lining, and place them wrong sides together. Unzip your zipper, and on the top edge, sandwich your zipper between the two fabrics. Fold over the top edge of both fabrics and pin them carefully along the zipper. [I pinned the fur to one side of the zipper first, and then 53
DIY // Fashion pinned the lining to the other side after that, placing pins on both sides since it was easier than trying to pin them to the zipper at the same time]. Now sew along those folded edges (the top edge of the purse) with a straight seam, attaching the fur, lining, and one side of the zipper together. Repeat for the other side so both sides of the zipper are attached. Make sure you position all your fabrics and your zipper correctly so your zipper will zip up properly and when zipped up, both outsides will be fur.
4. This is now what your project should look like. Zipper in the middle, fur on the outside, and lining attached to both pieces underneath (with wrong sides of the fabric together). 5. Lay your bag flat with right sides together, lining up the sides, and pin around the three (non-zippered) sides of the bag. Sew around it with a straight stitch. On the zipper pull side, stop your stitching directly under the zipper. On the opposite side of the zipper, sew all the way over the zipper to create a nice finished look. 6. Once your seams are done, trim your corners at an angle so the points are super sharp when you turn the bag right side out. 7. Now your bag should look like this. 8. Cut a small rectangle of leather, 1x2. Fold it in half and pin it to the long ends of the zipper tape. Sew across the fold several times to secure it in place.
And you’re DONE, so simple! 54
