HELL0 FEBRUARY How are you? How are you coping? We’re all desperately missing friends and family but hopefully we’re one month close to some kind of normal life. In the meantime we can only remain positive, at least we’re one month closer to spring and the days are starting to get a little longer. This issue is a difficult one to write up as at the time of preparing to publish, I am unaware

if restrictions are going to be lifted. But like the rest of the world, am hoping we can get back to meeting friends for coffee and going out for dinner. Whatever is in store for us, you can keep up to date with local news and people from around our region featuring in Lifestyle magazine. You can’t walk around Cyprus without seeing cats and this month I asked people why do people love felines here. I got such a

huge response that I had to share! Whatever you do, may your month be filled with beauty and love, after all it is Valentine’s Day soon Stay blessed,

ANIMAL WELFAR

HOUSE PASSES ANIMAL WELFARE LAW, BEEFS UP PROTECTIONS AND FINES

for example while taking them for a walk or when in a public place. The amended law also prohibits owners from keeping dogs and cats on rooftops, balconies or verandas, since these practices result in the pet being left isolated and exposed to the elements. The ministry of agriculture will be preparing a set of regulations specifying the minimum requirements for dog kennels.

C

yprus goverment passes a bill amending the Animal Welfare Law, in particular beefing up protection for domesticated animals and introducing stiffer fines for abuse. If found guilty of animal abuse by a court, a person will be liable to a fine of €10,000 – up from €1,700 currently – for the first offence. Repeat offences will be fined €20,000, instead of €3,400 as was the case until now. The bill was drafted by the agriculture ministry as part of government

Likewise banned is the holding in captivity of marine mammals such as whales, dolphins and seals. policies to reinforce animal welfare. After the law passed, the Animal Party released a statement welcoming the changes, but complained that a mooted clause for a total ban on keeping animals in cages did not make it into the bill. Under the changes, authorities can now take away an animal from their owners in case of abuse and entrust its care to a “suitable person,” without lengthy court proceedings. From now on it is forbidden to tie up a dog or a cat; dogs and cats may be tied briefly only,

The amendment for abandoned animals to not be deprived of food and water was also passed. In general, animal protection is strengthened through the cooperation of state services, private vets and animal welfare organisations that will participate in the animal welfare coordinating committee and district committees. “These committees will support and advise the ministry in promoting new policies and programs for animal welfare” the agriculture ministry said in a statement.

MOTORING NEWS

CYPRUS PETROL PRICE HIKE TO PAY FOR €40 MLN ECO-FINE

emission rights to cover the missing amount,” the source said. The ministry source could not reveal what percentage was left for Cyprus to meet its target, but Finance Minister Constantinos Petrides recently revealed week that the government plans to introduce a form of “green tax” on liquid fuels. In an interview with the online Brief, Petrides said that the government had plans for reforms which foresee the introduction of a green tax, which will be incorporated into petrol prices at the pump.

M

otorists will be digging further into their pockets when they visit their local petrol station, as pump prices are expected to shoot up by 2-5 cents a litre, to pay for a hefty fine as Cyprus missed EU emission targets for 2020. A Finance Ministry source told the Financial Mirror that petrol prices are expected to rise as Cyprus failed to increase

8

the contribution of renewable energy sources in the energy mix used for transport by 10% by the end of 2020. “This was the target that was agreed with the EU back in 2013, which unfortunately we did not meet. This is expected to cost the state several million euros as we will have to turn to the emissions trading scheme (ETS) to buy

“In particular, green taxation means nothing more than an increase in excise duty on fuel, emphasising that it is also our European obligation. He who pollutes the environment will pay,” Petrides told the news outlet. Confirming the ministry source that motorists will be needing more cash to fill up their tanks, Greens leader and MP Charalampos Theopemptou told the Financial Mirror that the government is expected to dish out some €40 mln to pay for ‘the right to pollute’.

Theopemptou argued that we reached this point as the government has practically done nothing to increase the contribution of RES in transport. “This government knew from the day they took office in 2013 that, as of January 2020, Cyprus would be obliged to cover 10% of its energy needs for transport from RES,” he said.

has done so far was to increase the use of biodiesel in the fuel mix, twice, but this was not enough to reach the target. “Cyprus needs to reach 10%. So, what will they do? They will have to cover the remaining percentage by buying

rights to pollute from other countries that have conformed to the directives,” he said. “At today’s prices, the government should be paying some €40 mln, but could be more if prices go up in the mean time,” he argued.

“From what the Energy Ministry officials have told us in parliament from time to time, we estimate that we are now at 5% of that target.” Theopemptou said that all the government

“Our restaurant, our life’’

Our dream was to one day create good service for tourists that would make their holidays here in Cyprus, even more special. This dream came true in 1989, where we established a small family business in Ayia Napa, a restaurant, as I (Theo) am a trained chef and my brother (Peter) is a trained waiter. Since then we have tried our best to provide as much satisfaction as possible to our customers.

There’s a reason why Flames Restaurant is listed as one of Trip Avisor’s top ten restaurants in Ayia Napa. Dedicated to providing an excellent service, its winning mix of friendly staff, a great atmosphere and delicious food has delighted diners since it was established 1989.

10

If traditional Cypriot dishes are what your after, Flames is the place to go. You’ll find House Specialities, Steak, Grills, Fish, Pasta Vegan and Vegetarian Dishes on the Menu. Not to mention its fabulous Wine list and homemade desserts - all chosen to complement your meal perfectly.

WE LOOK FORWARD TO SEEING YOU SOON. UNTIL THEN, STAY SAFE

GLAMPING Cyprus hopes to tap a new niche market for tourists with luxury camping, or glamping, for which legislation is being drafted, deputy tourism minister Savvas Perdios has announced

H

e spoke of a new era in tourism because of growing interest in spending time in nature and said Cyprus could compete well, both as regards camping as we know it, and the new market – glamping. “The opinions of various bodies will be sought in the final stages of preparation, and then a bill will be submitted to the law office so that it can be implemented in 2022,” he said. Perdios said he had briefed MPs on the National Tourism Strategy, adding that this year’s plan comprises three pillars: advertising and marketing; upgrading of infrastructure focusing on specific forms of tourism; and improvement of the competitiveness of urban and mountain areas. Under a Council of Ministers decision, as of March 1, passengers from 56 countries will be able to visit Cyprus without being quarantined for 14 days, unless they test positive for Covid-19 upon their arrival.

12

Responding to a question, Perdios said it is too early for estimates about tourism as all countries are experiencing the second or third wave of the pandemic and it will be difficult for someone to travel today or in February and March. “There is a hesitancy among our partners abroad to say what programme they expect to follow this year,” he

said, adding that there should be a clearer picture in the next few weeks. Asked about the possibility of a health passport for those who have been vaccinated for the coronavirus, he said this was an idea that was being discussed with opinion divided among supporters and opponents.

Committee chairman Andreas Kyprianou welcomed the new strategic plan which he said was focused on making Cyprus more than just a sun and sea destination focused on hotel tourism. Changes in the island’s tourism product will instead turn attention to the mountains, nature trails, traditional products and wine routes among others.

camping sites. “I am very concerned about the creation of large, luxury camping sites. I am not voicing opposition, but we need to very careful,” he said. Camping in the forest is carried out in cooperation with the forestry department, so it was important to be careful

as regards their presence in the forest, the number of people they will cater for and the activities that they will include. “We do not want to see camping sites that are damaging to nature and the forest, and run counter to protection of the environment,” he said.

This will not only increase tourism flows but help combat rural depopulation, he said. Greens MP Charalambos Theopemptou said it was important that tourism revenue benefited all areas of Cyprus. And he said the party had submitted proposals on regulations for 13

HEALTHY LIVING

Five reasons you can’t stick to your healthy eating plan

H

ealthy eating plans keep falling through, especially at this time of year and it can often be down to five main reasons, according to Dr Rachel Evans a psychologist who specialises in eating disorder recovery. From not setting clear goals, to being too restrictive and having subconscious beliefs about food, if you’re struggling to keep to a set eating plan, it’s important to look into exactly why you may be breaking it.

14

3. You think you have ‘blown it’

1. You haven’t set clear goals

Goals can often be too vague and it’s not enough to say that you just want to eat ‘less sugar’ or ‘more fruit and vegetables’, as it’s then difficult to know exactly what you’re working towards and track progress. Without clear, identifiable goals – you could be left feeling unsure about what action you need to take when eating healthily, which can lead to no action being taken!

2. The goals you have set are too restrictive

If you can’t keep to an eating plan, it may be because it’s too restrictive, which can lead to a state of physiological and psychological deprivation. When we don’t consume enough, we often end up thinking a lot more about food, which is a survival mechanism and can cause us to become irritable and crave ‘junk’ foods.

In psychology this is called the abstinence violation effect; when you have one thing off plan which leads to total collapse. This cycle of feeling like you have blown it, so you may as well eat everything you want to and start again with healthy eating on Monday, results in people often eating more unhealthy foods than usual, because they believe they won’t be able to eat that food again when they get back on plan - which can be damaging to long term healthy eating plans altogether.

4. You are trying to get by on pure willpower

We often believe that willpower is all we need to stick to a diet, but my own research has found that good self-control did not predict how well people could stick to their intentions to eat healthily; habits and how people ate in the past was more important.

5. Subconscious beliefs about food If something is keeping you stuck in old habits of overeating, it can often feel like you are sabotaging yourself over and over again, and this behaviour is likely to be driven by deep subconscious beliefs about food and yourself which can be difficult to break.

One of the most effective ways to combat negative subconscious beliefs and bad eating patterns is to recognise patterns from childhood and when exactly they are showing up in life now. Another way to tackle these behaviours is to look into hypnotherapy, to directly access the subconscious mind and find the root of eating issues - through hypnotherapy, these can be rewired for more helpful thought patterns, to help healthy eating become more achievable.

WHY WE LOVE CATS

AMANDA MOSS EXPLORES THE ISLAND’S LOVE OF CATS.

W

ith the number of cats outnumbering humans in Cyprus it was only a matter of time until I became a cat lady. Stereotypically single and middle aged as well, I absolutely fit the profile. Funnily enough, despite being a frequent holidaymaker to the island before I moved, I almost, dare I say it, despised the felines. So what changed? Having a friend rescue a helpless kitten from a dumpster and watch it strengthen was the start of my love of cats. Realising just how many cats are mistreated on the island saddened me. They don’t deserve it. Attending a business meeting in Penera last summer I stumbled across my first kitten, Thanos, who became something of a celebrity on social media as people followed his progress as I bottle fed him and revived him twice. He was 10 days old, dehydrated and was baking in the searing heat and sadly passed away four weeks later and I was stuck by how grief-stricken I was.

16

Then along came Mabel who I am sure is his sister as I went back to the bins and she walked into my arms. Nancy was next, our punk rocker who thrived on danger and tragically was run over and killed instantly last month. And finally Little T, named after the gym class TRX where he was rescued cowering under a bush, starving and frightened at 6 weeks old. I understand the attraction of cats now, they are intriguing and stare into your soul. They are excellent companions and love nothing better than to curl up beside you. Their love is pure and one of the greatest stress relievers is stroking a purring cat. I have fallen in love and no doubt will give a loving home to many more along with many of you who have. But did Cyprus end up with more cats than human inhabitants? According to Byzantine legend, Helena of Constantinople (Saint Helen) shipped hundreds of cats from Egypt or Palestine to Cyprus in 328 A.D. to control venomous snakes that had infested the area around the monastery, following a drought lasting 37 years. And they have taken over and stolen our hearts every since.

I have 46 cats and each one of them is a Cyprus rescue, each one of them has a different character, most of them are reasonably intelligent (as cats go) Like most cats anywhere, they give unconditional love despite in many cases, they were abandoned as babies. They, again, like most cats, are independent spirited, tough and most are natural snake killers yet don't bother with birds for the most part. Although I had one of mine bring back (drag by the neck) a live Chukka partridge) which was bigger than she was.

Paul Shelley

ll shapes ,all sizes ,all colours. I love that the ones who get fed by the wonderful volunteers, come running out to you hoping for a fuss or a treat. Unfortunely these are the confident ones that often lose their lives because of it at the hands of cruel monsters & murderers. Have had, and currently have several cats and kittens which were all rescues. All totally different colours and personalities !

Alix Moore The wildness. They are independent. They own the place. They give cyprus a character. They have a history. They are part of what Cyprus is now. They are Cyprus.

Pamela Theordorou Lingehall Love my fur baby I’m happy she has accepted us as one of her own. It’s extremely special when you allow a pet into your life, and they accept and love you back unconditionally. We are privileged to have them accept us as their own.

ART

IS BURLESQUE SUITABLE FOR EVERYBODY?

I

’ve been in Burlesque since 2014 and so far I’ve been affirming at any occasion that Burlesque is suitable for women (and men, when it comes to Boylesque) of any age, size and shape. And it is, indeed! For many reasons. Because we are an inclusive worldwide community, welcoming new members, happy to share our art and our passion. Because Burlesque is the celebration of beauty and uniqueness, regardless of and far beyond any stereotype and any modern-day canon. Because we believe, promote and support body positivity. Because if a beginner doesn’t aim to become a pro, dancing Burlesque can be easier than any other dance discipline, in terms of techniques and routines. Because starting taking classes doesn’t require any experience whatsoever.

20

And for some other reasons, that can vary according to point of views and experiences. For all the above motivations, when I explain what Burlesque is and how my classes are structured, I always explain (and guarantee!) that Burlesque is the self-esteem booster, the magical tool to bring out the diva that lies in you, the way to feel beautiful and sensual at any age. It gives us the opportunity to wear beautiful dresses and use alluring and glamorous props. Don’t we love to become someone else for a Carnival party? An elegant 1800s lady, a sexy witch, a Charleston dancer? Don’t we love to wear make-up and get our hair done? To look amazingly elegant when we attend a wedding? And I add that it is really for everybody, because it’s easy as it seems. Ok, I’m not talking about becoming a pro, I’m just talking about enjoying taking classes, doing our best without fearing any judgement. So, to me Burlesque is for everybody for all the reasons listed above but especially - I find it logical! Because all women have a feminine

side! Isn’t it true that at least once in our life we have seduced someone? Whether it was the person we had a crush on or just someone we wanted to convince of something, haven’t we used sometimes our charm or our seductive power? Even if it wasn’t for a romantic purpose, don’t we do it when we really want to reach our goal? So, when a woman tells me that Burlesque is not for her because she is not sensual or seductive, or she is a sporty type and doesn’t feel comfortable being sexy, I believe she should rather say it’s not for her because she doesn’t want to be more often and more naturally sensual and seductive in her everyday life. That’s it. But, if you decide to dare to show more often your feminine side, well, hold on tight! Because Burlesque will be a lifechanger. And you will never regret to have given it a go. You will start an endless love story with yourself, and loving yourself is the best gift you can ask for.

CYCLING HAPPILY AND SAFELY THIS WINTER – WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW By Catherine Ellis, Hill & Ellis

I

f you haven’t braved it yet this winter, do remember that this season is a fantastic time to cycle. Not only is it crisp, cool and quiet, without jumping on your bike daily, you might miss the season all together, staying inside or on public transport until March. But cycle and you will see more of the season and catch some vital vitamin D whilst you’re at it. To fully enjoy the season in the saddle you need to cycle clever. Here are the five things you need to know to cycle happily and safely in the winter.

BE SEEN Get some strong lights and get yourself a back22 up that stays in your bag

just case you forget to take them and are caught cycling home after sunset. Reflective is also great. Get a reflective jacket, or add a band or gilet over your jacket, and it’s worth considering permanently attaching some reflective details to your bike. It’s easy to forget how hard it is to see cyclists until you are driving a car

with headlights from oncoming traffic shining in your eyes.

DON’T OVERDRESS OK, so there’s frost on the ground and your breath is condensing in front of you but once you start cycling, you’ll get hot. So, don’t overdress from

the outset or you will get sweaty and for the rest of the day you will be drying off (and warming up)! A lightweight but windproof jacket is perfect to keep you snug and trust me take off that extra jumper, you won’t need it on the bike. You just need to brace yourself for the first 10 minutes, but it will fly by and its good for the immune system.

LOOK AFTER YOUR HANDS Anyone who has forgotten their gloves and cycled for longer than 15 minutes in the winter, knows exactly how important gloves are to enjoy cold weather cycling. That searing pain in your fingertips as the warmth at home tries to resuscitate your hands virtually guarantees you won’t forget your gloves ever again. So, get some good gloves; they should be water-resistant or wind proof but don’t go mad and buy ski gloves – you will get too hot. Again, it’s worth having a backup pair stowed safely in your pannier bag, which you can gleefully whip out when you have forgotten your first pair!

ICE AND LEAVES The leaves still left on the road and might look

innocent, but they are not! In the winter months the remaining leaves get slippery and icy. Ice is also more likely to congregate at the side of the road, so cycle carefully near the gutter. If you are on the backstreets it might be quiet enough for you to cycle closer to the middle of the road which in the early morning is worth it, as any ice will have melted away towards the centre. If it is icy or there are lots of leaves on the road, cycle in a lower gear for better traction.

CHOOSE THE RIGHT BAG In the winter, you’ll definitely end up wearing more so if you are not careful you won’t escape the back sweats. You warm up quick, and with a windproof jacket on and even a rucksack you’re on the fast lane to back sweat alley. So, don’t overdress. Invest in a pannier bag, not only will it keep everything dry, but as you can attach the bag to your bike (instead of

carrying it like a donkey) you will avoid that sweaty back. By investing in the right gear and not wrapping up too warmly before you start, you’ll find that winter cycling can be a great way to get outside, see the season, soak up some vitamin D, and keep fit. All things that can be a little more challenging in the grey winter months.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR Catherine Ellis is from Hill & Ellis, which produces a range of high quality, stylish cycle bags. Each bag, designed in the UK, is created to transition perfectly from home to bike to boardroom to bar. They are functional, fashionable and hard wearing. IN TIME OF CHANGE CHOOSE TO CHANGE WITH EASE AND GRACE A L i f e s t y l e o f W e l l n e s s

O

ur world is fast changing. Between lock downs, national economic recovery and fear of the virus, it can be hard to navigate your life and future. Last month we spoke about keeping your new year resolutions. How is it going for you? Did the recent lock down cause you to pause the progress of your goals? Or did you adapt to make your still goals work in the new lock down environment? Have you ever wondered why is it that some people thrive and others struggle in the same set of circumstances? What is it that one man has, that the other lacks to make the most of the situation? Some might say that it's all down to luck. We know better, it's more than luck, it's a choice. A choice to move forward and evolve is yours to take at anytime! When the environment no longer supports what used to work for you, do something different. If

your goals can't be met the way you planned, make a new plan and keep going. Choose to be happy with what you have and open your eyes with a new perspective to infinite opportunities. Opportunities that are calling out for you to notice them, take them and be a success. You might think, it's easy to say 'change with changing times' but where do you start? The best place to start is usually with reviewing your current situation. To do this I recommend using a wheel of life temple (find on Google or other search engines) to score each area of your life and journalling about what is making you happy, unhappy, bring in income and what is no longer working for you. Once you have taken the time to see a true reflection of your life, you can start to see clearly what needs to change and take action accordingly.

Ekaterina Sophia in Larnaca Join Ekaterina for meditations at The Tree of Life in Larnaca, Thursdays 6pm The same goes for your goals. Journal some of these key questions: is my goal still relevant? Is this still what I want? Will it bring me happiness? Is my plan to achieve this goal practical and fitting to my lifestyle? What actions can I take to achieve my in lock down? What will I do as soon as lock down is over to achieve my goal? Be brave to try new ways of achieving your dreams. CELEBBRITY

OLLY MURS Back on tour in 2021

Lockdown has left a huge hole in people's lives with the lack of live music. How excited are you to get back on the road again and play to fans? I’m so excited to get back on the road. It’s been a tough year for everyone, so it’s nice to have something to look forward to for next summer. I’m very aware that not only am I looking forward to it as playing live is the best part of my job, but also for all the people I employ to put on the shows – from my band, crew – sound, lighting, producers, riggers – so many people that rely on live music to make a living. To go around the UK playing at loads of amazing outdoor venues is going to be pretty special.

30

What've you missed the most about performing live? I’ve missed seeing my fans and having that connection with them when I’m on stage. There’s nothing better than being on the road and actually being able to see your fans singing and dancing to your music. I feed off people’s energy, so going back on

the road all around the country, to places I don’t often get to go will be amazing. Also playing live with my band, and having them all on stage with me bringing my music to life is the best feeling. If you had to pick, what would be your favourite tour memory? It’s so hard to pick as I’ve been lucky enough to have so many amazing memories on tour – but playing at Wembley Stadium with Robbie Williams really stands out for me. I was supporting him on his European tour in 2013, and to have 60,000 people singing back to me and waving their hands in the air to my music was pretty special and I was overwhelmed with the reaction. Tell us a bit about what it was like to captain England in this year’s Soccer Aid. It was an honour to Captain this year’s England team for Soccer Aid, as we raised a record amount of money (over £9m) in the midst of a global pandemic. I played shocking to be fair, probably my worst personal performance, but it will still be one of my most memorable Soccer Aid’s because of the circumstances in which we still managed to put it on.

You underwent an impressive body transformation during lockdown with personal trainer Rob Solly - what was your favourite bit from the experience? To see the results of your hard work is obviously the rewarding part, but for me it was more important in how it made me feel. At the start of lockdown, while still recovering from knee surgery, I was eating anything and everything out of boredom – but that made me feel less productive and more sluggish, so having Soccer Aid as a focus to get me fit again was a real drive. We’re eagerly awaiting new music from you can we expect it soon? Yes, it’s been a while since I released my own music – so that’s the plan for this year. I’m starting to work on writing now and figure out what the next sound is for me, so watch this space!

MUSIC January found us in lockdown Part 2 and sadly, still no music events…. however, some form of music medicine was available…...yay!! We saw two events, where local musicians were given the opportunity to finally get their instruments out, sing their hearts out and perform.

chance to react to the ban on all Live music events. A permanent winter festival for the future? Time will tell but definitely a little light in these dark music times.

Fengaros Festival introduced the first edition of the new online event, FENGAROS REACTS, which ran from the 10th until the 31st of January and featured ten local acts.

The second event was a two day online marathon which ran from 12pm to 8pm and took place on Saturday the 23rd and 30th of January. The event was organised by the Pancyprian Guild of Professional Artists in collaboration with the Municipal Theatre of Limassol. Eight hours of continuous live streamed, free performances with links to support the participating artists. Hopefully musicians’ needs are finally being noticed. We can only hope so, as music plays a huge role in our lives and wellbeing.

Performances were free and live streamed on various online platforms. To support the musicians and the art workers involved in the event, links were made available for donations plus the chance to purchase artist merchandise. The name clearly describes the purpose of the event….a

For a small island, Cyprus is brimming with talented musicians. One that I want to highlight this month is Constantinos Pavlides, who is in three original local bands, Arcadian Child, Delirium Elephants and Barebone.

Music expert Drew Andreou, who organises Cyprus Rocks, gives her insight into the music scene around Cyprus. If you want to be included email info@lifestylelivingcyprus.com

His knowledge and passion for drumming extends further by offering online drumming lessons for beginners and advanced students, and it doesn’t end there! Constantinos has recently written a book titled Live Well, Drum Well. His latest achievement focuses on his technical developments and accomplishments at a musical and personal level. This informative guide combines his passion for music, healthy living and an insight into his active and vegan lifestyle. A great and modern addition to any book collection.

Forget any February Blues with The Dust Coda! London Rockers, The Dust Coda’s recent single release ‘Breakdown’ is just one of the songs from their upcoming new album MOJO SKYLINE (I love the name) which is due to be released on the 26th March. The band describe their music as ‘hard hitting rock ‘n’ roll rooted in Blues Soul’ and that is exactly what this four member band deliver. Their Southern Blues Rock sound consists of gritty blues with swagger and warm mellow tones. If you like the sounds of Rival Sons, The

Temperance Movement, Black Stone Cherry with hints of classic rock, then you will appreciate this band. Whether it’s the foot stomping sounds and guitar riffs or the slow melodic tones, The Dust Coda are definitely worth checking out.

It’s so refreshing to see that even though musicians are unable to perform due to the pandemic, they are using the time to write song and produce more albums…… we can never have enough of GOOD MUSIC! 35
