opened the Liverpool School of Legal Education because the whole way we train solicitors has changed. The law degree and LPC has gone, so paralegals can now qualify and there’s a Solicitor’s Qualification exam so it’s more hands on with two years of experience as opposed to seven years of qualifications. This has given us a bit more of an opportunity to be innovative. We’ve trial runned the school with the courts to see what works and what doesn’t, so we’ll be taking people from school leaving age and turning them into paralegals with 12 week courses, we’re supporting people who are already working as paralegals in law firms going for a SQA contract because they won’t be given any training, it’s just for them to acquire experience. Acquiring experience is easy but recognising 2
what you’re learning from a formal point of view and document it, that is different, so we’ll be offering courses to support that. We have a mixture of online and in person courses based at our premises here and of course using the law firm here as a way of getting practical experience so it blends the both. And to ensure I have enough work to give them I am very excited too do something that I’ve waited to do for years which is pro bono business clinics for small businesses who don’t want to waste their money on law firms in the beginning because they need all their resources. So we’ll be using the students to give them advice, supervised of course, for all new businesses. This means a lot as I want to give back to the business community.
I am taking the best of law and best of business to combine it to improve the future of legal professions. I’ve invested quite heavily in the tech, so it’s not just lectures, there’s a lot of videos and handouts and interactive learning, quizzes, to mix it up to keep people engaged. I wrote all the courses, spending the last few months taking the design of business philosophy how we design law firms itself and integrate them into a very legal way of thinking. So I have taken a lot of different concepts and places and put them all together for a very bespoke course.

MOTORISTS LIVING IN THE NORTH WEST STILL LACK AWARENESS OF NEW HIGHWAY CODE RULES 19% of drivers don’t know they have to give way when people are crossing or waiting to cross at a junction
T
he latest research commissioned by Europcar reveals that not all UK drivers are aware of the changes to the Highway Code which came into effect on 29th January 2022 . According to the research 2 in 10 motorists surveyed in the North West still don't know that cyclists are allowed to cycle in the centre of a lane when they are able to keep up with the traffic stream. 19% are not aware that drivers have to give way when people are crossing or waiting to cross at a junction. With around 35.9 million people in the UK holding a full driving licence it equates to around 7.2 million people not aware of these new rules . Significant

changes have been made to the Highway Code that gives a new ‘hierarchy of road users’ in a bid to improve the safety of pedestrians, cyclists and horse riders. Given there were 330 cyclists and 1,743 pedestrians killed or seriously injured in road accidents in Great Britain during 2019 , it's not surprising that the new rules place those road users most at risk in the event of a collision at the top of the hierarchy.
But it’s not just the new rules that don’t seem to have sunk in with motorists. The Europcar research found that even some of the wellestablished rules were not that well known by drivers in the North West. 22% admitted they didn’t know middle lane hogging is a criminal offence with an on the spot fine of £100 and three penalty points. Plus, 22% of drivers didn’t realise it is illegal to use a horn while driving in a built-up area between the hours of 11:30pm and 7am.

Liverpool is one of the most dog friendliest cities in the UK

ased on the quality, and quantity, of dogfriendly amenities such as pet shops, grooming parlours bins for pet waste and dog-friendly retailers, Liverpool is in the top 10 in the UK to cater for tops dogs’ needs. With the majority of pet parents (63%) willing to move to live in a house or apartment that better suits their pet, it appears Yorkshire’s Terrier numbers may be about to drastically increase. However, the research also revealed pet parents’ mutterings about finding accommodation suitable for their pooch. Under half (43%) of pet parents admitted finding a dog-friendly rental was not always easy, while 60% said expensive pet
deposits and fees are the biggest challenge when renting with a dog. Regardless, pet parents appeared undeterred by the barriers faced, with a fifth (21%) of dog parents having purchased or rented a bigger, or more expensive, home to better accommodate their dog. Nearly one in three (30%) dog parents have even been inspired to move in favour of their dog’s happiness and wellbeing, while 29% said they’re willing to spend 10% more on their purchase or rent to accommodate their dog.

hen we look at diagnosis of illness in Traditional East Asian Medicine, a practitioner has to look at every aspect of the patient such as their complexion, temperature of the body, their lifestyle, symptoms, conditions, sleeping pattern, pain on palpation, diet, hereditary factors, their pulse, the ear, eyes and most importantly, the tongue. The Tongue in TEAM, has many connections in the body, both to the meridian channels and the internal organs. It is important during a consultation as it can present strong visual indicators of a person's overall harmony or disharmony. The tongue has a special relationship with the Heart, as the Heart opens to the tongue as a function. The normal tongue in Traditional Eastern Asian Medicine has a pinkish body with a thin white coating. A pale tongue body indicates Deficient blood, or Qi (Energy) or Yang or Excess Cold. A white tongue can become overly moist because the deficient Yang Qi (Energy) fails to transform and transport the fluids around the body, and an excess cold tongue

can present a thick, white coating, which is moist and slippery. It is pale because it obstructs the circulation of Yang Qi (Energy). An overly red tongue body indicates
Excess Heat plus a yellow coat with Damp Heat. A purple tongue indicates that Qi (Energy) or blood are not moving harmoniously and are Stagnant. Cracks in a red tongue indicate Deficient Yin or Heat injuring the fluids.
One symptom of “Heat in the Heart”, is ulcers on the tongue, especially around the tip area, that is the area related to the heart. Heat in the heart can be caused by either emotional or physical stress, or lack of Yin, meaning internal fluid not transforming and transporting between the Yin organs, Heart, Spleen, Liver, Kidneys & Lungs, once we have nourishment, we can help bring balance to the Yin organs. Lifestyle chats to Chris Cannon of Hidden Liverpool Tell us about Hidden Liverpool? Hidden Liverpool is my vehicle to give guided tours and educate people on the lesser-known aspects of the city’s history. As well as my own tours and educational talks, I also guide on the Liverpool City Explorer open-top busses and have worked on a contract basis for Liverpool City Council as a tour guide for St George’s Hall, which, at times, required me to dress up as a Georgian Footman. Last month, I worked with Liverpool ONE to promote their new Heritage Trail – for that I was dressed as an 18th Century privateer! I try to make my tours a little different than most by mixing up ‘old’ history with more contemporary stuff and little quirks of architecture or the like. Also, if I’m feeling cocky, I’ve been known to say to people “If you don’t learn something that you didn’t know already, I’ll give you your money back!”. I’ve never had to give a refund yet! When did you set it up? I officially launched Hidden Liverpool in 2016, but it had been in planning for some time. What do you offer? I give guided walking talks around the city as well as offering local history talks to schools and local groups. What do you love about the city? Wow. That is a tough one to narrow down. There’s lots of things… When I was younger, most of my weekends were spent clubbing in the city, it was probably the best night-life in the Northwest, if not the country at the time. Some would say it still is, I’m sure. Now that I’m ‘more mature(!)’ I have come to appreciate the subtleties of the place that you tend to miss when you’re younger. The friendliness of strangers and the willingness of people to help others is like no other place that I have been to. Also, the fact that you can walk into a pub 16
by yourself and end up chatting to a random person without an issue. That’s something that I miss when I’m elsewhere. I’ve met so many interesting people in pubs around the city, it’s astonishing. And how can I not mention what the tourists all say. When you speak to people who have never been here before, they are always amazed by the incredible buildings we have. That’s something that every now and again even I take for granted because, as far as I’m concerned, they’ve always been there. How long have you studied the city? I’ve had an interest in history of Liverpool ever since I was a kid, I think my mum instilled a love of history in me, but I really started getting into the nitty-gritty of things around 2007. After my dad passed away, I realised that I knew next to nothing about his side of the family, so I signed up to Ancestry to start researching his family tree. I found out that the Cannons arrived in Liverpool around the 1880s and lived in the old court housing around Vauxhall and Everton. That piqued my interest to find out more, so I started looking seriously into the socio-economic history of the area and found out about the deep hatred between the Irish Catholics and Protestants because one of my ancestors was tried for the murder of a Catholic man (he narrowly escaped being hanged due to a technicality). That trial took place in St George’s Hall and from that, I decided to learn about the history of the building. It grew from that really. It helps that I am a sponge for information and have a knack for remembering names and dates. What are the most popular tours? My Heritage Corridor Tour seems to be the most popular. It’s a three hour walk from St George’s Plateau to the Pier Head, but even though I have a fixed route and spiel, I’ll change it on
the fly from time-to-time if somebody mentions something that they are particularly interested in. For example, I had a group recently with a lad doing his A-Levels. One of the things he was studying was the city’s direct and indirect links to slavery. I concentrated on that aspect of things for him. Another example which occurred only a couple of weeks ago was when I took an American family around. They were fascinated by Liverpool’s links with America, especially the connections around the Confederates and the American Civil War. I made it more interesting for them by fleshing out some of the stories that I tell of Liverpool in those times. Pretty much every tour I do ends up being slightly different because I always try to find out what people are interested in learning and aim it specifically fit them. Are you always finding new facts? Oh, yes! Normally when I’m following a line of research, I’ll fall down a rabbit-hole and end up reading about something that has nothing to do with my original investigations. I’ve also found quite a lot of ‘common knowledge’ about parts of the city and its famous sons and daughters that is 100% incorrect. I started collating this info just to keep a note of them, but I must have at least the start of a book now, there’s that many.
I have always said that you should keep an open mind to new information and always admit that what you believed was wrong if it has been proven so. I’ve had many arguments with people who refuse to accept something they have held as a fact all their life was wrong. The most common quote in such circumstances is normally along the lines of “My mother told me that, so why should I believe you” even when I’ve shown them documented evidence from old newspapers and the like. I’ve even had someone threatening to beat me up because I proved something his grandad had told him wasn’t true. How much does it cost to go on a tour? It depends on how many people. I charge on a sliding scale from £40 (one or two people) up to a maximum of £200 (for twenty people). Is there a limit to the number of people who can go on it, and how long does the tour last? I try to keep the group size at a maximum of twenty people as after that it becomes akin to manoeuvring an oil tanker around town at times but have made exceptions in the past. Tell us a bit about your background? Back in the 1980’s I was involved in the computer games revolution that had it’s start in Liverpool. I knew quite a few guys in the industry who knew I had a talent with these new-fangled devices and was asked to write a couple of games for Bug-Byte – they had been asked to do some demos for a new computer, The Colour Genie. I wrote three or four simple games and one of them was selected to be shipped with every new computer sold! To cut a long story short, I eventually ended up working for Software Projects and assisted on the games Manic Miner and Jet Set Willy – I was good friends with the author, Matthew Smith (It was me who introduced him to the guys at BugByte). Fast forward several years and a few different jobs (all in IT), I was working as server support for Royal Insurance. Through department changes, mergers, and outsourcing deals, I went through several roles – Server Support Specialist, Business Technology Consultant; Technical Project Manager, to name but a few.
I ended up working for IBM and moved to an International Conference Support role (that was fun – I travelled all around the world!), then took on the role of Capacity Manager for DEFRA, the government department. I was in charge of making sure that their server estate was always at peak performance. Anyway, that all came to an end in 2016 when I was made redundant during an IBM resource alignment process. Luckily, it happened just before my 50th birthday which meant that I could get a small pension from the company. This meant I could afford to follow one my real passions, the history of the City of Liverpool. Do you have time to go away and visit other places and if so, where do you like to go? Not at the moment I don’t! It’s been so busy the last month I’ve only had two or three days off and that’s including weekends. I’m making up for the fact that I had zero money coming in during the pandemic lockdowns so making hay whilst the sun shines! Back in the BC years (Before Covid) my wife and I discovered cruise ships. It was something that I honestly believed that I wouldn’t enjoy, but I loved it – we both did. We’ve been on a few cruises now and visited places all over Europe. That’s something that we’ll be doing again in the future. I’ve been lucky to travel all over the world with my work, so got a love for travel doing that. I’m a bit of a culturevulture, so I’d rather visit an historic site rather than lie on a beach to be honest.
Why is Liverpool different to the rest of the UK? It has a sense of independence and solidarity that you don’t seem to find elsewhere, the ‘Scouse not English’ phrase springs to mind. At times it seems we have more in common with Wales, Ireland and Scotland than we do with the rest of country – most likely because just about everyone here has roots in those very places. I also love the way injustice is dealt with, not just in cases like Hillsborough but, for example, when a bunch of fascists were chased out of the city. The fact that someone started playing the theme from Benny Hill made that even more special. We also have the ability to laugh at ourselves. Some of the best ‘Scouse jokes’ I’ve ever heard have come Scousers. But woe betide anyone we haven’t invited into our circle who tries to crack such a joke. Humour is a big part of being a Liverpudlian. We can see humour in even the darkest situations at times. What’s your favourite spot in Liverpool? The Pier Head and Albert Dock area. Seeing the way those areas have been improved since the 1980s is quite a thing. Back then, who on earth would want to hang around a busy bus station that was covered in graffiti or around an old disused, silted up dock? How do you relax in the city? Pubs. There’s nothing I love more than meeting up with a mate and sorting out the ills of the world over a pint. If there’s a beer garden and it’s sunny, even better! What’s your favourite time of year? Spring, without a doubt. Not only can you see nature coming back to life, but it means that tourist season is nearly here and that means I’m going to be earning some money again.

Lifestyle meets fashion designer Katie Laura Bryan What is your style? My style is mixed depending on where I am going. I usually like to keep it glam, tailored and clean. I love to dress up in outfits that suit my height and figure.I am only small so I have to be careful what I wear. I don’t usually follow trends. I tend to stick to what suits me. I love wearing colours that really suit my skin tone like Cream, Beige, Browns and Gold tones. I love a statement skirt and a crisp white shirt with some glamorous shoes and gold accessories. During the day I love Athleisure clothing, a nice hoodie, cool trainers and a cap!

How did you get into fashion design? I am self taught. I was originally a stylist and sort of transitioned into fashion design by accident. I have always taken clothes and re designed them to my liking, so I bought a sewing machine and started making clothes I wanted to wear myself and it grew from there. How do you find the industry? Very competitive. With all the huge brands that have loads of money pumped into them it can be very hard to even get noticed. But I believe if you have a
unique product that you truly believe in then others will too. Who are your ideal customers? My ideal customers are women like myself. Someone who wants to stand out in a crowd, who loves being complimented on their outfits. Someone who appreciates the finer details and quality of fabric
that separates them from the sea of girls wearing fast fashion brands that hundreds of other girls are wearing. She is glamorous and has a passion for beautiful things. Who is your style icon? Jenifer Lopez!. She screams glamour and sex appeal yet classy and sophisticated. She’s so sexy and is definitely my muse. What fabrics appeal to you? I love to work with unique, luxury fabrics that are very glamorous and durable.

How has the fashion industry changed with the pandemic? The fashion industry has had to adapt and so have the consumers. Côte, the UK’s favourite French restaurant today launches its new menu – the biggest evolution of its food in its 15-year history. Designed for guests to discover the excitement and vitality of today’s French cuisine, the menu includes a wider range of exciting vegetarian and vegan options with modern and indulgent spins on classic dishes, alongside new must-try items like the Espresso Martini Crêpe that offer fresh twists on much-loved Côte favourites. The menu created by Côte’s new Executive Head Chef, Steve Allen, previously Head Chef at Gordon Ramsey at Claridge’s, has a firm focus on high quality sourcing and provenance. The signature Côte de Boeuf, hand cut in Côte’s own in-house butchery, will now be seasoned for 30 days in a specially built Himalayan rock-salt ageing room. This new process gives the grass-fed British and
Irish beef a deeper, more intense flavour by allowing it to dry slowly and naturally for improved taste and caramelisation during the cooking process. It is served with a decadent, creamy truffle hollandaise sauce, which the restaurant chefs make daily from scratch and a choice of two sides, as well as a ramekin of pink salt for guests to season their meat to perfection. Available now, the menu also includes indulgent vegetarian and vegan dishes, including Côte’s Celeriac Fricassée. This modern take on a classic French cooking style is firmly rooted in Nouveau Cuisine and packs a punch of pure flavour. Golden-baked celeriac is paired with creamy haricot blanc purée, sweet, crunchy white grapes, salty mushroom granola – and finished off with braised baby gem, drizzled with a tangy sun-dried tomato paste for maximum impact.

Old Tom Cats ‘n’ Gin Amongst the many types of gin currently being drunk today, lies Old Tom. There are many explanations for the name but the name probably comes from the wooden ‘Tom Cat’ plaques that used to hang outside public houses and drink houses in 18th Century England. As the government tried to control the excessive flow of gin with strict licensing and high taxes, pubs tried their best ways to avoid them, and there was often a slot under the cat’s paw, to put money in, and as the customer cupped his mouth over the paws, a leadtube would then spout a measure of gin. This old-timey ‘mother’s ruin’, known for its sweeter side, dates to the beginning of the 1800s, when gin drinking and making was rampant in England. There are no real rules to its making although it must include juniper, like any other gin. However, Old Tom gin can be aged—or not. It can have added sugar—or not. And it can use a neutral base spirit—or not. What is understood is that the distilled result falls
somewhere between a maltheavy sweet genever and today’s London dry gin. Inspired by the botanical rich and lightly sweetened Old Tom Gins of yesteryear, the House of Botanicals Classic Old Tom Gin was the first spirit from The HoB brand. The gin is sourced from a base gin produced in London; a subtle reference to the history of Old Tom Gin. Its base is a British grain spirit with juniper berries, angelica root, orris root, coriander seed, cassia bark, almond, orange peel and lemon peel creating a truly outstanding dry gin in its own right; rich in piney juniper, citrus and elegant spice. To create the Old Tom style, the gin is then shipped to The House of Botanicals in Aberdeen and macerated with delicate Moroccan saffron and chamomile flowers, as well as a hint of muscovado sugar, before bottling at 47% abv. This is a mighty powerful gin. It has a lovely golden yellow hue, with complex

and lengthy aroma notes. Gentle floral, fruity and earthy aromas combine well, with spice and juniper also making their presence known. These last two also continue to shine alongside the warm piney flavour notes. Coriander and chamomile follow, culminating in lingering sweet sugared citrus peels. This is long on the palate and fragrant. House of Botanicals Classic Old Tom is a really pleasant gin, mouth watering, with an unmistakable Old Tom sweetness and a little warmth at the end. Personally, I like it with ginger ale but a simple dry tonic also lets this gin shine. A Tom Collins or Martinez would work well as a cocktail. This has appeal to those who do lean towards fruitier sweet gins whilst still being a solid option for those who like classic gins. It’s available as a classic version, a maple and seasonal raspberry.

Being a showbiz correspondent is a role I absolutely love and whilst I report on the glitz and glamour of musicals, the artistic scripts of plays or the electric atmosphere of a concert, there is also a dark side to the world of showbiz. This is something I found out whilst at the premiere of a new movie called “Billy Smith.” This dark horror movie is the creation of script writer and actor Daniel P Lewis, directed by the talented Joshua Blewitt and Produced by Chris Parrott. The plot is gripping and twisted in all the right ways you would expect a horror movie to be. It features Sharon Byatt who plays best-selling author Elisha Stones, who decides to make a documentary about the ‘The Newton County Killer.’ Billy Smith played by Daniel P Lewis is the most
feared serial killer since Richard Ramirez with close to twenty people falling victim to him, but it is the Melissa Forbes case which sees Billy Smith willingly hand himself in to the authorities. This movie had me on the edge of my seat chewing on my newly shellac nails. The character Billy Smith is a nasty piece of work and Daniel P Lewis plays the psychopath unnervingly well. The line-up includes Zara Abraham, Keith Hyland, Christian Greenwat, Jodie Barchha Lang. Olivia Sloyan, Amanda Clapham, John May, Tosin Salako and Sean Cronin. Keep your eyes peeled for

Supercalifragilistic Borussia Monchengladbach Birkenhead indie legends Half Man Half Biscuit were one of two music acts whose collected works played a significant part in preserving my sanity during lockdown in the spring and summer of 2020, the other was vintage American jazz maestro, Slim Gaillard. In gratitude for the preservation of my mental health I thought that the least that I could do in return was to devote this month’s column to the Four Lads Who Shook The Wirral, and to try to bring your attention to the release of their 15th studio album ‘The Voltarol Years’,
which came out at the end of February and has a vinyl release planned for July. “The Voltarol Years” is the first on HMHB’s own label, RM Qualtrough. The previous 14, going back to 1985’s “Back in the D.H.S.S” were perhaps the most famous titles to be issued on Liverpool’s own Probe Plus imprint which founder Geoff Davies has now sadly put out to pasture. HMHB are one of if not the only bands who can sell albums to the uninitiated purely on the strength of their song titles alone. Indeed Geoff Davies signed the band to Probe Plus on that very basis after being given a tape by the band. ‘I thought that if the tape was half as good as the titles then I’d want to record this group’.
I am not a particular fan of the indie genre but HMHB far exceed the limits of that description. Musically they are a solid four piece unit with particularly English rock sensibilities but lyrically they are in a class all of their own. Nigel Blackwell’s writing is wonderfully witty, dry and surreal. The tone is often earthy and sardonic but always with a rich vein of humanity. They occupy a unique place in British music history and in my opinion they are indeed one of the very best bands that this sceptic isle has ever produced and I cannot recommend a thorough investigation of their wondrous back catalogue highly enough to anyone with ambitions of forming their own band. 31
