Writer and comedian Jamie Demetriou, the son of an English mother and a Greek Cypriot father, won Best Male Performance in a Comedy Programme at the Bafta TV Awards recently.

T

he 34-year-old actor won for the third series of the Channel 4 comedy Stath Lets Flats in which he plays Stath Charalambos, described by Wikipedia as “an incompetent and socially inept British GreekCypriot man who only has his job at a letting agent in London because his father is the owner of the company”. Stath’s sister is played by Demetriou’s real-life sister Natasia, who was herself a nominee at Sunday’s awards. The show has form at the Baftas, in fact this is the second win for Jamie as Stath. He previously won at the 2020 awards, when the show also won Best Scripted Comedy. The ‘male actor in a comedy’ category was quite strong this year, making Demetriou’s second acting Bafta all the more impressive. Other nominees included Steve Coogan as the revived Alan Partridge (This Time With Alan Partridge) and Ncuti Gatwa for his role in Sex

Education. Gatwa is the Rwanda-born actor who’s just been announced by the BBC as the new Doctor Who. As with most secondgeneration British Cypriots, it’s unclear just how Cypriot the actor feels – though he did contribute a mostly humorous entry to the ‘Cypriots Worldwide’ website, talking briefly of his heritage: “Growing up in England I’ve

lost a bit of my Greek Cypriot essence, but it’s there in my obsessive use of lemon and olive oil, and in my desire to be a father from an early age.” His own dad started out with nothing, and ended up a chef in posh restaurants. “My mum’s responsible for my capacity to love. My dad’s responsible for the way I dress salad.” The actor has also costarred in Fleabag (as the bus suitor with big teeth), among other highlights. Meanwhile a US remake of Stath Lets Flats, to be called Bren Rents, is being developed by Fox, with Demetriou among the executive producers.

James not only organises and runs the fitness session in his own time, he also makes himself available to hold 1-2-1 personal training sessions. James was also nominated for the National Wellbeing Award in 2021 James said, "Fitness has always been my passion as it has helped with my self confidence, personal believe that I can achieve anything I put my mind to and helped me to manage high pressured situations. James also provides Sport Specific Training session for members of ‘Dirt Track Events’ who hold a series of British Championship rounds which includes Speedway, Flat Track, Sidecar and Mini-bike racing. James said, “People can expect 100% commitment, attention and support with a twist to help those gains in personal performance.” James said, “I’m excited to team up with Cyprus

Lifestyle magazine, and when Amanda proposed the idea of holding a Bootcamp in Cyprus I did not need to think twice. Amanda is an award winning PR Consultant who believes in making a difference to peoples lives. Woking with Cyprus Lifestyle Magazine is beyond my expectations. I have held numerous personal training sessions with Amanda over the last 12 months. Amanda has experienced the method in the Papa madness. Do not get me wrong, it will be hard work. The sunshine of Cyprus will add to the challenge but also the rewards with a guaranteed smile at the end."

Papa Luckman SCC member quotes: “ I’ve been involved on and off since James started a year ago. I really look forward to each session, it’s so much fun you forget you’re actually working out! ” “ I needed to do something and interaction with other people is much better than doing exercise alone. I now look forward to my mid-week and weekend sessions all thanks to Papa! ” For information on the bootcamp, go to www.amandamosspr.uk and click on Lifestyle Retreats.

LIFE COACHING

"I share my wisdom, compassion and enthusiasm for life"

Meet Georgia Panayi, Consultant Psychologist/Certified Life Coach(USA) 18

Tell me why you decided to go into the career you chose? For years I worked with highly stressed people, who were getting sick because of the wrong work-life balance and I knew then I had to help people give them a healthier & happier life. Describe a typical day? A typical day in my life, is a mixture of things. I enjoy walking, exercising and socialising. When my work schedule allows I love mixing with family and friends, dining and getting to appreciate new things of my surroundings and life. I love travelling and I like to do that as often as I possibly can.

Why I love helping people: I believe I am a people person. I want to help others to overcome their fears and achieve their life-time dreams. Being stuck and not doing anything about it in my opinion is a wasted life and I find that very sad. We are only given one life and we should work at making it the best we can.

Who are your ideal clients? I have worked closely with people from different nationalities and backgrounds and cultures, and I understand the needs for my clients. This is what makes me special in my niche, working with people from different backgrounds and ages.

GP Life Coaching & Consulting ...coaching your path to a happier life! Georgia says: “Life is a

journey to be enjoyed – the downs are part of the ups and they help strengthen us – call it an exercise of the mind, soul and the heart! In order to know what is good we must know what is bad!”

GIN What is a Craft GIN And What Makes it Special?

It seems like everything is a craft at the moment. Once the word was given to the little stalls at school fetes selling hand knitted scarfs, and home-baked cookies, but now the word has taken on a whole new meaning in alcohol production. The craft beer movement which started just prior to the Millenium, has been making steady ground and now the booming craft gin industry has staked its claim. But what is craft gin? When can you call gin a craft batch and what can you expect from a bottle of this artisan-brewed elixir?

Craft is NOT Homemade - well not always!

Some of the big brands in the gin industry have started to cottonon to the fact that craft gin is big business. Gin connoisseurs can’t get enough of these handcrafted tipples, brewed with passion and love, and the big brands are starting to incorporate the term into what they do too. Put simply, a true craft gin has a real person or small team behind it. Often owned by the master distiller, it is the knowledge and passion of the person that determines the recipe – they often hand-select the ingredients and run the stills too. This individuality is reflected in the gin and it’s not something that you

can buy in or mass produce. In the case of Just Jins, our gins are the result of many years of dedication to learning techniques and experimenting with flavours. To produce a handcrafted gin, true craft distillers will get involved in the whole process, from carefully selecting each ingredient to distillation, dilution, design and bottling. Only then can you infuse the individual personality that each craft-gin lover is looking for. With smaller production lines, craft gin is often produced in small batches, and the gin is carefully monitored and tested to ensure continued standards. However, master distillers often reinvent their recipes and experiment with exciting new flavour combinations. This means a never-ending selection of exciting new gins for you to try. Of course, a craft gin is still a gin and a craft distiller will be loyal to the roots of gin’s heritage and style.

FASHION

Lifestyle meets fashion designer Katie Laura Bryan What is your style? My style is mixed depending on where I am going. I usually like to keep it glam, tailored and clean. I love to dress up in outfits that suit my height and figure.I am only small so I have to be careful what I wear. I don’t usually follow trends. I tend to stick to what suits me. I love wearing colours that really suit my skin tone like Cream, Beige, Browns and Gold tones. I love a statement skirt and a crisp white shirt with some glamorous shoes and gold accessories. During the day I love Athleisure

24

clothing, a nice hoodie, cool trainers and a cap! How did you get into fashion design? I am self taught. I was originally a stylist and sort of transitioned into fashion design by accident. I have always taken clothes and re designed them to my liking, so I bought a sewing machine and started making clothes I wanted to wear myself and it grew from there. How do you find the industry? Very competitive. With all the huge brands that have loads of money pumped

into them it can be very hard to even get noticed. But I believe if you have a unique product that you truly believe in then others will too. Who are your ideal customers? My ideal customers are women like myself. Someone who wants to stand out in a crowd, who loves being complimented on

their outfits. Someone who appreciates the finer details and quality of fabric that separates them from the sea of girls wearing fast fashion brands that hundreds of other girls are wearing. She is glamorous and has a passion for beautiful things. Who is your style icon? Jenifer Lopez!. She screams glamour and sex appeal yet classy and sophisticated. She’s so sexy and is definitely my muse. What fabrics appeal to you? I love to work with unique, luxury fabrics that are very glamorous and durable.

magazines, and what girls are wearing on social media. I tend to stick to classic designs that can be worn season to season and doesn’t go out of style. I am inspired by the people closest in my life, I love how they conduct themselves, and express them selves so freely and beautifully. What are the three statement pieces you should have in your wardrobe this summer? Firstly I recommend a beautiful statement skirt like one of my designs and a white oversized shirt and some fitted cream trousers. You can’t go wrong.

How has the fashion industry changed with the pandemic? The fashion industry has had to adapt and so have the consumers. It went very Ath leisure based and everyone wanted to wear tracksuits and leggings. Therefor brands had to move with the times and provide such designs. But now we are changing again and becoming more dressy and providing consumers with beautiful evening pieces now we are mostly back to normal. How do you come up with new ideas? I start researching ahead of time, checking out what is hot on the runways, in

NOTES AND REFLECTIONS OF A WOMAN CREATING HER BEST LIFE Stefania Bongiovanni

Hi gorgeous, have you ever heard the expression “failing forward”?

see it like the first step of your path towards success!

“Failing forward is the ability to get back up after you have been knocked down, learn from your mistake, and move forward in a better direction.” (John C. Maxwell).

Remember: if you do nothing (and you hold on tight to your comfort zone!), you may not make any mistake, but you won’t even progress, create, achieve, learn, improve!

I think this concept contains a very powerful message and one of the best pieces of advice that Life can give us.

I’m not encouraging you to fail, I’m just inviting you to treasure your mistakes and failures, to be thankful for them, because one day you will look back at them like the starting point for creating your own strategy to succeed, either it is in your career, your lifestyle, your love life or your hobby.

We usually tend not to talk about our failures because we feel ashamed, embarrassed or maybe upset with ourselves. Don’t take a failure like a major setback. It’s only a temporary situation. It’s a lesson, a precious feedback, indeed it is an opportunity to improve, to find new and better ways and directions. Behind any fiasco lies an opportunity. Embrace it with an open mind and 28

Failure is part of the journey to success. Don’t be tempted to play the victim because things didn’t work out as you had planned. History is full of scientists, artists, actors, entrepreneurs, athletes who initially failed but eventually

reached their goals and realized their big dreams. What if they had given up at the first adversity because they were feeling like a loser??? Sometimes rejection is protection. What we may see as a missed chance, may be the way of the Universe to redirect us towards what is for our highest good. So now, gorgeous, just go out there and start living your best life! Who am I? I’m an Italian living in Cyprus and loving it crazily. My name is Stefania Bongiovanni, some of you will know me as the founder of The Girlfriends’ Circle, but as well as the woman who believes in #sisterhood and in #womensupportwomen.

Cyprus prepares action plan for Monkeypox

T

he Health Ministry is sending out instructions to doctors and hospitals to deal with possible monkeypox cases. Talking to state TV CyBC, the Director of Medical Services, Dr. Elisavet Constantinou, said, “We will be looking at how health services will manage possible cases, tracking issues, the isolation process for cases and contacts, and the need for laboratory diagnosis, while entry points to the republic could be a concern.” Asked if authorities are thinking of introducing PCRtype diagnostic tests for monkeypox,

30

Constantinou said scientists abroad are already working on developing a PCR test. “We have our thoughts, but meetings must be completed, and the political leadership will take the necessary decisions.” Evidence suggests that monkeypox will not develop into a pandemic like COVID. Since May, according to the World Health Organisation (WHO),

cases of monkeypox have been reported in 12 countries where monkeypox is not endemic. No deaths have been recorded so far. The UK, Portugal and Spain are among the worst hit in Europe. Reported cases so far have no established travel links to endemic areas. Symptoms can appear within 12 to 21 days after being infected, including fever, joint and muscle pains, along with a rash that spreads throughout the body.

ocal band ABETTOR is a five-piece alternative Rock band formed in Larnaca in 2013. A band whose progress is consistent and continuously evolving and as they grow, so does their music. With aspirations of making their sound heard abroad as well as in their homeland, the band members are not afraid to experiment and create an original unique sound. Describing themselves as a genre defying powerhouse, drawing from diverse musical backgrounds, they aim to make their mark in the constantly evolving and

changing world of Rock music. Indeed, they are an interesting band, four highly talented musicians and one of the most respected bands on the island. Their performances are not as frequent as their followers would like but this only adds to their likability. ABETTOR’s musical purpose is to combine traditional rock sounds with more modern and progressive elements creating an original and unique elaborate sound. Their professionalism, exceptional compositions and musicianship can

The band has released two albums to date, Time Thief in 2016 and Rinse & Repeat in 2020, both receiving great acclaim. They extended their reach by performing at various Cyprus festivals including, Into the Limbo, Power of the Night and the popular FENGAROS and by sharing the stage with artists including Planet of Zeus, Villagers of Ioannina, Freak Kitchen and Wovenhand. Their popularity continues to grow, due to their originality and musical diversity. If you like quality original sound and musical artistic flair, then I recommend you go along to their gig on 2 July at Savino in Larnaca and live the ABETTOR experience. Until then, check them out on Spotify and other music platforms and give them a follow too!
