LEGAL ASSISTANCE
Bernadette McDonald, of BMD:Law Tell us about your legal school? We’ve
opened the Liverpool School of Legal Education because the whole way we train solicitors has changed. The law degree and LPC has gone, so paralegals can now qualify and there’s a Solicitor’s Qualification exam so it’s more hands on with two years of experience as opposed to seven years of qualifications. This has given us a bit more of an opportunity to be innovative. We’ve trial runned the school with the courts to see what works and what doesn’t, so we’ll be taking people from school leaving age and turning them into paralegals with 12 week courses, we’re supporting people who are already working as paralegals in law firms going for a SQA contract because they won’t be given any training, it’s just for them to acquire experience. Acquiring experience is easy but recognising 2
what you’re learning from a formal point of view and document it, that is different, so we’ll be offering courses to support that. We have a mixture of online and in person courses based at our premises here and of course using the law firm here as a way of getting practical experience so it blends the both. And to ensure I have enough work to give them I am very excited too do something that I’ve waited to do for years which is pro bono business clinics for small businesses who don’t want to waste their money on law firms in the beginning because they need all their resources. So we’ll be using the students to give them advice, supervised of course, for all new businesses. This means a lot as I want to give back to the business community.
I am taking the best of law and best of business to combine it to improve the future of legal professions. I’ve invested quite heavily in the tech, so it’s not just lectures, there’s a lot of videos and handouts and interactive learning, quizzes, to mix it up to keep people engaged. I wrote all the courses, spending the last few months taking the design of business philosophy how we design law firms itself and integrate them into a very legal way of thinking. So I have taken a lot of different concepts and places and put them all together for a very bespoke course.

PIZZA PUNKS TO OPEN ITS SEVENTH UK RESTAURANT IN LIVERPOOL
P
izza Punks has confirmed it will open its seventh UK restaurant in Liverpool this September. Opening in the heart of the city on Bold Street, Pizza Punks Liverpool will join the brand’s other restaurant locations across the UK, including Glasgow, Belfast, Leicester and the latest opening Durham. The new 170-cover restaurant will be the largest Pizza Punks site in the UK, with a new grab and go kiosk at the rear of the building and an additional 30-covers of outdoor seating on Bold Street. The restaurant will also feature regular DJs and live music, neon lights, cool artwork, monochrome brick tiles and a stripped back aesthetic; it’s the ultimate cool pizza experience. Advocates of freedom and expression, Pizza Punks offers a distinctive pizza experience – create your own - with 35 unlimited toppings to choose from, all made from scratch in the Pizza Punks kitchens, to create your own personalised punked up pizza. All for one flat fee, there are no extra costs, just awesome, handmade in-house pizza. Pizza Punks Liverpool also offers Halal, vegan, gluten-free and vegetarian options. At the helm of the restaurant is the brand’s handcrafted San Franciscan pizza dough; a unique dough that’s proofed for 48-hours to generate maximum flavour and finished with San Marzano Tomato, Basil & Garlic Sauce and mozzarella before the house-toppings are added. It’s then cooked in wood-fired ovens for the ultimate thin and crisp base with a deliciously chewy thick crust. Pizza Punks have taken all of the best bits from Neapolitan Pizza dough by using the finest Italian ingredients and methods before ripping up
the rule book and introducing them to the aged sourdough starter sourced from San Francisco.
New to the Pizza Punks offering and available at the new Liverpool site, customers can try fresh pasta, hand-made in the restaurant each day. As with the brand’s bespoke approach to pizza, guests will be given the option to punk up their pasta with a choice of sauces and the finest Italian ingredients. Guests can choose from toppings such as Nduja, Tuscan Sausage and Salt & Chilli Chicken. Pizza Punks Liverpool will offer craft beers and rebellious in-house cocktails, choose from a selection of punked-up classics for the true experience, including Drumstick Caiprisma, featuring vanilla infused rum, raspberry rum, fresh lime juice, served with retro drumstick; Smoked Popcorn Daiquiri with charred sweetcorn infused rum, sweetcorn syrup, fresh lime juice and vanilla smoke; By Monks for Punks with spiced run, pineapple juice, fresh lime juice, almond syrup, buckfast, served with salted popcorn and more! Pizza Punks founder, Brad Stevens said: “Pizza Punks Liverpool will be our seventh site in the UK, and we can’t wait to share the Pizza Punks experience with the city. At Pizza Punks we do things differently, our customers have the freedom to make the experience their own – they can punk up their pizza or pasta with unlimited, quality toppings for no extra charge. We want families and friends to visit and have the best time. For us, it is about providing excellent
quality ingredients, unrivalled levels of customer service and most importantly, having fun; we want our guests to enjoy some great food, drinks and music with us.” Pizza Punks was awarded the UK’s ‘Best Italian’ takeaway eatery last year, in the Deliveroo restaurant awards, voted for by the Deliveroo customers. And its city centre restaurants are all ranked number one on Trip Advisor, in Glasgow, Belfast and Newcastle. Alex Alexander has become a household name in the world of medical aesthetics. From beginning her journey Alex has won multiple awards, two of which being “Best Aesthetics Practitioner” at the Liverpool Lifestyle awards. Throughout the pandemic Alex took her buisness to new realms by launching a clinic and trainjng academy. She has soon become the leading aesthetics nurse and training provider across the UK. Alex has recently rebranded and launched her very own brand Lex Cosmetics (tm). With this she has built a stunning new clinic with expert facilities in Aintree. Since rebranding I was unsure of how it would go down with clients and students however it’s proved to be the best move I’ve ever made! My ideas to deliver standards of excellence have been put into practice and I’ve never been as busy as I am now! I have to display my gratitude to all the loyal clients and students who have followed me across Liverpool and the UK for their treatments and training. It gives me faith in myself that what I do is worth while and valuable. 2022 upto now has been amazing for me with so much more to come!

BUSINESS
WHY EVERYONE NEEDS TO ADVERTISE
S
o many times when I approach businesses to help them grow, I get the response that they’re either too busy so “don’t need to advertise” or too quiet and will advertise when things pick up. If you’re busy you can’t be complacent and expect your customers to come back, you have to give them a reason to return. What if there’s a slump in the economy? Advertising brings you loyalty. And if you’re quiet then you need to advertise to ensure you’re the first choice for customers to come to. This is the thing about business. Consistent advertising ensures greater business success. End of. If it didn’t work you wouldn’t see repetition of adverts on the TV, radio and of course in magazines and newspapers. Think advertising doesn’t work ? Tell that to McDonalds, Coca Cola and the endless brands that are etched in your mind as ones to choose.
Need new trainers? You’re bound to choose a brand like Under Armour or Nike or Adidas rather than an unbranded one. Why? Because advertising has persuaded you that these are the brands to trust for quality and delivering what they’re supposed to. One-off adverts don’t work, people need reminding. Advertising gives your business brand loyalty and promotes a positive image, giving you greater exposure for you to target your customers. You may have a restaurant that isn’t busy. But you need to advertise regardless, for when your potential customer is looking for somewhere to go out for dinner, you’ll be the first choice they remember. Advertising makes sure that the consumer knows that when they are in need, your business will be there to help them. A continuous amount of
consumers visiting your business is the first step to increase your sales. The more consumers you have, the more business you will have. Advertising creates business now and in the future. And advertising encourages repeat business, for once you have got your customers, they’re bound to come back if you’re providing a great service and product. Ultimately, advertising makes your company money – It works. Advertising attracts customers to your business and increases your sales. When consumers see strong and positive advertisements they are more willing to buy and ready to choose your business. Invest in advertising for your business and you will watch it grow and succeed. Advertising is about creating the desire for your customers. Which is why people love Lifestyle! Talk to me about a bespoke advertising package to help grow your business. I can make you famous. KO King Andrew Cain steals the show with another brutal first-round knockout
F
earsome Liverpool KO artist Andrew Cain defended his WBC International Silver superbantamweight title in the exact same way he won the belt – with a devastating first round knockout. Cain lifted the roof off the York Hall with his swift stoppage win last month on a Queensberry Promotions show, broadcast live on BT Sport. His latest victim, tough Mexican Luis Moreno (10-3, 6KO), was meant to take the 25-year-old boxer a few rounds, like he did with top prospect Dennis McCann when they shared eight rounds together last year, but instead the 29-year-old crumpled under the heavy hands of the ruthless champion. Cain came out with his hands held low, as his custom, bouncing lightly on his toes, dipping in and out of range, looking for his openings. And it soon came; two left
hooks distracted Moreno enough for Cain to come up through the middle with a crunching right uppercut that could not have landed any cleaner. ‘Gallito’ was instantly downed under the force of the shot. Harried, but back on his feet, he fired back valiantly under duress then momentarily looked like he touched down again. Cain even stepped back briefly but immediately got back on the attack, punching through his opponent with such ferocity and spite that the visiting fighter was floored for a second occasion. This time, he thought twice about getting up again and referee Victor Loughlin rightfully stopped the contest at the time of 2:02 in the opening round.
The unbeaten boxer said of the blistering performance, “I’m just putting out there who I am, this is who I am, this is what I’ve done since I was a little boy. I’m not Dennis McCann, I’m Andrew Cain. I’m up for any title fight, but really I want to go to bantam, get as many belts as I can at bantam, then I’ll move up and smash these super-bantams when the time’s good.” In a post-fight interview, with his green and gold belt hung proudly over his right shoulder, he agreed he needs to be fast-tracked to a higher level, “I want to be fighting the best fellas that I can. They’re meant to be durable aren’t they, but they hadn’t fought me yet. I’ll take whatever comes, definitely want a title for my next fight, ideally at bantamweight.” The undefeated youngster is part of an exciting crop of champions from the Everton Red Triangle gym in Liverpool, including Olympian Peter McGrail (4-0, 3KO) and WBC Silver titlist Nick Ball (150, 8KOs), all developing under the watchful eye of head coach Paul Stevenson. GIN What is a Craft GIN And What Makes it Special?
It seems like everything is a craft at the moment. Once the word was given to the little stalls at school fetes selling hand knitted scarfs, and home-baked cookies, but now the word has taken on a whole new meaning in alcohol production. The craft beer movement which started just prior to the Millenium, has been making steady ground and now the booming craft gin industry has staked its claim. But what is craft gin? When can you call gin a craft batch and what can you expect from a bottle of this artisan-brewed elixir?
Craft is NOT Homemade - well not always! Some of the big brands in the gin industry have started to cottonon to the fact that craft gin is big business. Gin connoisseurs can’t get enough of these handcrafted tipples, brewed with passion and love, and the big brands are starting to incorporate the term into what they do too.
Put simply, a true craft gin has a real person or small team behind it. Often owned by the master distiller, it is the knowledge and passion of the person that determines the recipe – they often hand-select the ingredients and run the stills too. This individuality is reflected in the gin and it’s not something that you can buy in or mass produce.
In the case of Just Jins, our gins are the result of many years of dedication to learning techniques and experimenting with flavours. To produce a handcrafted gin, true craft distillers will get involved in the whole process, from carefully selecting each ingredient to distillation, dilution, design and bottling. Only then can you infuse the individual personality that each craft-gin lover is looking for. With smaller production lines, craft gin is often produced in small batches, and the gin is carefully monitored and tested to ensure continued standards. However, master distillers often reinvent their recipes and experiment with exciting new flavour combinations. This means a never-ending selection of exciting new gins for you to try. Of course, a craft gin is still a gin and a craft distiller will be loyal to the roots of gin’s heritage and style.

But with a difference. Just Jin is a completely natural, artisanal craft London Gin or Bathtub gin, with infused, natural flavourings, and of course, more gin. We have made a commitment to utilise re-used glass bottles for our Just Jin. All bottles and caps are sterilised prior to being re-used. We encourage bottles to be returned for further recycling.

MUSIC
Wanna play in Macca’s front room? Devastatingly, within a year Mary McCartney died, leaving husband Jim to raise 14-year-old Paul and 12-year-old Mike alone.
The National Trust is planning to open up 20 Forthlin Road, the childhood home of Sir Paul & Mike McCartney, to unsigned artists, with the aim of inspiring new generations of creativity. ‘The Forthlin Sessions’ will see unsigned music artists given the chance to visit, write, and perform at 20 Forthlin Road, sitting in the very same spots where around 30 of the world’s most famous songs, including ‘Love Me Do’, ‘I Saw Her Standing There’, ‘Hold Me Tight’, ‘I’ll Follow The Sun’ and ‘When I’m 64’ were written and rehearsed. It is also where Paul wrote his first-ever song, ‘I Lost My Little Girl’. To choose the artists who will perform at ‘The Forthlin Sessions’, the National Trust will work with Mike McCartney and Pete Paphides and consult with the Liverpool Institute of Performing Arts (LIPA). The opportunity is open to any unsigned, UK-based music artist aged over 18. ‘The Forthlin Sessions’ will be recorded and publicised, offering vital opportunities for new musical talent to reach audiences. To celebrate a year of the Beatles’ anniversaries, including Sir Paul McCartney’s 80th birthday in June, and the 60th anniversary of the Beatles’ debut single ‘Love Me Do’ in October, the charity will be celebrating the creativity sparked from the rooms of 20 Forthlin Road (“the birthplace of the Beatles”), by supporting a new generation of talent and bringing a place rich in popular music history, to a wider audience. In addition, the British public will be asked to share what the creativity sparked at 20 Forthlin Road has meant to them, to help inspire the new music that will be created at ‘The Forthlin Sessions’ by the chosen artists. This could be a memory, a favourite song or how music, 30
photography and art gave them courage to follow a different path in life. To find out more about 20 Forthlin Road visit nationaltrust.org.uk/theforthlin-sessions or @nationaltrust #TheForthlinSessions. Hilary McGrady, National Trust Director General, says: “What the Beatles did was inspire a generation to feel free to be creative, regardless of who or where they were. Much of that started at 20 Forthlin Road with the songs that were written under this roof. It’s a pleasure to care for the Beatles’ childhood homes and to use the story of what happened there to continue this legacy. Our places don’t have to be stuck in time; they’re here to keep sparking creativity, dreams, and new ideas. We can’t wait to hear how what happened at 20 Forthlin Road inspired and keeps on inspiring the nation”. To kick off the search for the musicians who will play ‘The Forthlin Sessions’, a new poem – ‘An Ordinary House, An Ordinary Street’ - telling the story of the house has been released as a short film. It features figures from the history of the house including Mike McCartney, the Quarry Men drummer Colin Hanton, Colin and Sylvia Hall, custodians of Mendips – John Lennon’s Liverpool home -and 20 Forthlin Road respectively. They appear alongside schoolboy Luca from the Wirral and a number of creatives from across the City of Liverpool, including former students of LIPA - the performing arts education institution - founded by Sir Paul McCartney and Sir Mark Featherstone-Witty in 1996, in Paul and Mike’s old school. The McCartney family moved from Speke to 20 Forthlin Road, a postwar terraced council house, in 1955.
Jim brought music back to the house to help the boys through their grief, with first a trumpet, then a guitar and then drums that in Mike’s words “fell off the back of a lorry”. In 1957, Paul McCartney was introduced to John Lennon at the St Peter’s Church fete in Woolton, halfway between their two homes. The chums rehearsed and wrote at 20 Forthlin Road, writing lyrics to songs like ‘I Saw Her Standing There’ in school books on the front room floor. Mike drummed for the Quarry Men until an accident at scout camp put paid to his career on the sticks. The Quarry Men’s loss was history’s gain, with Mike turning to photography – taking the number 86 bus to Allerton library to learn the art - and documenting the rise of creativity that would change the world. The shots of the new poem film reflect many of Mike’s poignant and intimate images of that time at Forthlin Road. Mike McCartney explains more: “It was just a normal family home. We were school kids. There was no music except that my dad would tickle – as he called it - the ivories after a hard day at work. At the beginning, there was no music other than dad and no photography. There wasn’t any thought of showbusiness, I can assure you. “After we lost our mum, dad was bringing up his two little boys who were growing bigger all the time, on £10 a week. We were poor. The idea of getting into photography or music was unthinkable for working class lads back then, but Dad saw how creativity could help us through our grief. Everything that was created here – the music, the photography was created from love. I’m delighted our house and our family can inspire new generations to follow a path that might surprise people, and that it’s been part of so many lives, not just ours.”
NUPTIAL GROOVES WWW.MYFUNKYWEDDINGDJ.CO.UK
Supercalifragilistic Borussia Monchengladbach Birkenhead indie legends Half Man Half Biscuit were one of two music acts whose collected works played a significant part in preserving my sanity during lockdown in the spring and summer of 2020, the other was vintage American jazz maestro, Slim Gaillard. In gratitude for the preservation of my mental health I thought that the least that I could do in return was to devote this month’s column to the Four Lads Who Shook The Wirral, and to try to bring your attention to the release of their 15th studio album ‘The Voltarol Years’,
which came out at the end of February and has a vinyl release planned for July. “The Voltarol Years” is the first on HMHB’s own label, RM Qualtrough. The previous 14, going back to 1985’s “Back in the D.H.S.S” were perhaps the most famous titles to be issued on Liverpool’s own Probe Plus imprint which founder Geoff Davies has now sadly put out to pasture. HMHB are one of if not the only bands who can sell albums to the uninitiated purely on the strength of their song titles alone. Indeed Geoff Davies signed the band to Probe Plus on that very basis after being given a tape by the band. ‘I thought that if the tape was half as good as the titles then I’d want to record this group’.
I am not a particular fan of the indie genre but HMHB far exceed the limits of that description. Musically they are a solid four piece unit with particularly English rock sensibilities but lyrically they are in a class all of their own. Nigel Blackwell’s writing is wonderfully witty, dry and surreal. The tone is often earthy and sardonic but always with a rich vein of humanity. They occupy a unique place in British music history and in my opinion they are indeed one of the very best bands that this sceptic isle has ever produced and I cannot recommend a thorough investigation of their wondrous back catalogue highly enough to anyone with ambitions of forming their own band. 31
