Lifestyle editor's letter

APRIL ISSUE 84

A note from our editor...

Hello lovely Lifestyle readers! Happy 7th Birthday to us! As Editor, I’m immensely proud of every single issue of Lifestyle Monthly, but I don’t do this alone. We are a small but mighty team, Neil Woods as head of sales and the design team Catherine and Eve. Together we spend many a late night swapping ideas and sending countless emails back and forth as we pore over images and text. We do this because we strive to make every issue better than the last. And when I do get to see it in print, even after being in this a few years now, I still get that tingle, because when it comes down to it, I love what I do.

is already under-way as a natural runner I am not. If you are thinking about doing it yourself I couldn’t recommend it more. It doesn’t matter if you run, walk, skip, or cartwheel if you must, such a great cause deserves as much support as possible. Lots of love,

Joy x

Wow what a month it has been for me – much of it in celebration, and my twins birthday in London was a blast. A few impromptu evenings in town were thrown in too. Rookwood Bar & ‘Cue, was so good I went there twice. I’ve also found a new haunt, Club Maya, this is my latest go to booze joint – not only does it serve some amazing cocktails but the décor is suitably dark and moody. Perfect. Lots to look forward to this month too – Easter - with all the chocolate that that entails, and the Crabbies Grand National. I love the National, rightfully billed as the best chase on earth, it’s the only day I put a bet on, and in fact the only day I take any notice of horse racing. But as soon as it starts I will be glued to the TV, shouting for a horse that I can’t quite make out amongst the melee. 4

I

NEW YEAR, NEW CAREER

am writing this for all of those wanting to become a nail tech, a spray tanner, a wax expert & join the beauty professional! I wish there was a guide available when i joined the industry that could have given me some direction & help me to avoid wasting money and making the wrong choices. I am now a multi-award winning educator, competition winner, a-list session stylist, Grand Master Technician & run The Creative Beauty Group North West based in Liverpool. But let’s start at the beginning - why become a nail technician for example?

There are so many reasons why I know I made the right career choice….. As a nail tech you can choose the hours you want to work. Be self employed, work from home, become a mobile technician, work in a salon or spa, set up your own salon or work as a session technician. The beauty industry is booming in a recession so a great choice to make a great income! Finding the right training, is probably the most important decision you will make when joining the industry. Several years ago I went to a training academy to add waxing to my treatment list

and as a result of poor training I never felt confident to wax anyone apart from myself which meant I basically wasted £249 plus expenses and time. I then had the expense of retraining years later, so I could confidently offer it as a treatment. I cannot stress enough how important is to research into your trainers and training provider. If you want to be a great technician & make a great business for yourself you need fantastic training and support from your educator. The Manicure & Gel II intro course to the industry is a two day class that will allow you to offer manicures, luxury spa manicures, polish application including french, 21 day wear Gel Polish application including single colour, french & heat changing reaction gel polish application and removal. This means that after only two days in-depth training, £279+vat training cost you will be a fully qualified nail technician ready to start building your business and making money. If you charged only £25 per client you could have made enough money to train in acrylics, spray tanning, waxing etc in just 2 weeks if you only had 4 clients a day! We help our students with marketing, advertising and help to let their businesses grow momentum to build thriving careers. If you read this and can relate, call us and let us guide you. Let 2015 be the year for your new career. The Creative Beauty Group North West, Unit 7, 24 Derby Rd, Bootle, L5 9PR Tel: 0845 606 6663

BEAR GRYLLS launches Mission Survive: “I’m A Celebrity on steroids”

Adventurer Bear Grylls has embarked on many challenges throughout the course of his life, from climbing Mount Everest a mere 18 months after breaking his back, to serving for three years as a reservist with the SAS. owever, his latest project may be his most daring yet, as he hosts Mission Survive, a new ITV show which features eight celebrities learning how to survive in the jungle. The cast includes Rugby World Cup winner Mike Tindall, double Olympic gold medalist Kelly Holmes, pop stars Jamelia and Max George, actors Emilia and Laurence Fox, comedian Tom Rosenthal, and model Vogue Williams. 10

40-year-old Grylls has embarked on a creative publicity campaign for the show, memorably smashing through the glass windows of This Morning harnessed by a rope. The presenter is clearly proud of his new program, and describes the concept as “an empowering journey for people where some crumble, and some come alive.” Despite being on the same channel and featuring some similar aspects of ITV’s

Lifestyle MISSION SURVIVE

I’m A Celebrity, Get Me Out of Here!, the even though we have celebrities and yes we’re in a jungle, this is I’m A Celebrity on steroids.” Celebrities are not treated with special care or sympathy on the show, and are mostly left to use their own initiative, which becomes tested when out of helicopters and climbing down

Perhaps the most unique aspect of Mission winner’s prize. This is because the idea of the series is intended to be, in Grylls’ own words, “about me trying to build the contestants into a hero, so that if my kids were there without me lost in the jungle I’d want those celebrities beside them.” This thought process is key for Grylls, who aimed for this to be not just a typical reality show, but one for people taking part who want “the sense of achievement, that when pushed under pressure they have the steel that will drive people on.” One of the most demanding moments of the series occurs in episode two, when the celebrities are forced to drink a pint of their own urine. Grylls became notorious in his earlier career when he drank his own waste on television, and after years of survival training, there are not many items he won’t consume if it means staying alive. “I’ve learnt in survival to get over the grim 12

and your life is on the line you’ve got to put your prejudices aside and do it.” The removal of preconceptions is a key component for Mission Survive, and Grylls is quick to point out how Silent Witness actress Emilia Fox was “well prepared, driven and determined,” while explaining that despite the involvement of two world class and strength are not the only weapon in the survivor’s arsenal.” Despite the dangers of the show, including “somebody getting stung by bees and half drowning”, plus a hospital visit for Mike Tindall after he got hit on the head by a piece of wood, the physical nature of the show was not the hardest part for all involved. “I said to the celebrities at the beginning that you have to embrace failure,” remembers Grylls. “It’s so counterculture for people, especially when you’re on TV to dare to fail, because you’ll look silly or vulnerable, but the heart of survival is embracing failure, to be resourceful and never give up until you get what you want,” he adds. Mission Survive is a rare anomaly in the world of terrestrial television, a show that despite the famous faces and the exotic human approach to competition, survival, and self-improvement.

Lifestyle ecofy your home

THE YEAR OF

GREEN

Buster Bell, MD of thermogroupuk.com, offers five top pieces of ‘green’ advice for consumers renovating, retro-fitting or specifying their homes: 1. Remember - the Government promises to reduce Co2 levels by 2050; its ‘Zero Carbon Buildings Policy’ requires all new homes from 2016 to mitigate all carbon emissions produced on-site as a result of energy use. This includes space heating and cooling, hot water and fixed lighting. New-build specifiers must ensure that any carbon produced from energy use must be balanced by carbon savings elsewhere. 2. The construction and maintenance of housing generates over a quarter of UK carbon emissions; energy-saving features make houses cheaper to run, and are a good investment financially, socially and environmentally. Look out for products such as solar windows that can be made lighter or darker; draught excluders and insulation products to reduce heating requirements; energy saving lightbulbs; home energy monitors that track your energy usage, for a reality-check; gadgets like eco-kettles and energysaving toasters, and standby gadgets to save energy and cash.

3. Get smart! Most objects that are powered by electricity and connected to the internet 14

have the potential to communicate with one another via a smart-phone. Check out the latest raft of phone apps such as ‘Mythermotouch’, which allows multiple users to control numerous underfloor heating units remotely, without a router; it can be calibrated to work with floor sensors from many different thermostat manufacturers. 4. It’s easy to assume that electric underfloor heating is an expensive luxury. But with the industry’s current push for green ways of thinking, modern energy alternatives such as electric underfloor heating systems are becoming a reality for many people. 5. Why consider electric underfloor heating? Older heating systems can provide uneven or inadequate heat that encourages damp, and can damage the fabric of the property. There are also obvious cost savings to the bill-payer and health benefits to the occupants when modern heating systems are used, reducing low temperatures and damp conditions. Other benefits include the complete lack of dirt when compared to a coal fire, and the additional space gained by having an underfloor system. Retrofitters and specifiers - make 2015 the Year Of Green!

the greatest chase on earth

The Crabbie’'s Grand National re you ready for a flutter? This year’s Crabbie’s Grand National is starting on Thursday 9th April, with Ladies Day on the 10th and the Grand National Day Saturday 11th. This weekend is totally unique, described as the race of dreams and creator of legends. Therefore, it is no surprise that the Grand National receives more attention around the world than any other horse race. History has been written about the legendary runners and riders who have triumphed in the Grand National, each of them demonstrating that thrilling combination of human endeavour and equine fortitude. From the legendary triple-winning success of Red Rum, to our present day successors, there is always a story to be told.

A

Once again the world will stop in its tracks, as 600 million people watch live on television. 40 horses and jockeys will line up to race across the famous fences including Becher’s Brook, Canal Turn, Valentine’s and The Chair. And there is nothing quite like the sensation of heart-clutching, wriggling expectation as the 40-strong field for the Crabbie’s Grand National is persuaded into a fair line, ahead of the dash to the first fence. Whether at Aintree or at home watching the Channel 4 television coverage, a general hush falls while the starter calls the runners into line. The tape is released and then a roar - the 18

most anticipated race of the year has begun. The sense of excitement begins at such a great height, tumbles and hurtles onwards throughout nearly 10 minutes of breathtaking action and often afterwards. Betting slips or thoughts, carefully clutched or pondered on, are not to be celebrated until the result has been officially announced. Replays are avidly studied to determine what happened where to each of the runners and riders. Once-a-year punters come out in force on Crabbie’s Grand National day, studying the list of runners to locate their selection from the office/shop sweepstake, or placing their wager on a horse with a name they like or one linked to a topical event - Party Politics was a popular choice when he won the great race in 1992, with the nation on the brink of a general election. There are over 150,000 racegoers at Aintree during the three days of the Crabbie’s Grand National Festival, while the British television audience will be nearly nine million, with more than 600 million worldwide seeing the action. The Crabbie’s Grand National is a national treasure, both enthralling and fascinating, and not to be missed. Good Luck Everybody!

One of the main talking points this year is the participation of A P McCoy for the final time in the Crabbie's Grand National, which he won on Don't Push It in 2010. At the moment, he is expected to partner the favourite, Shutthefrontdoor, who is owned by J P McManus and trained by Jonjo O'Neill in Gloucestershire. Shutthefrontdoor is 8/1 with Betfred, official betting partner of the 2015 Crabbie's Grand National Festival. McCoy will break another record if participating as expected in the 2015 Crabbie's Grand National. Last year he equalled the record for the most rides in the race - 19, matching Tom Olliver, who was successful three times (1842, 1843 & 1853).

20

The weights continue to be headed by Lord Windermere (trained by Jim Culloty) on 11st 10lb. The nine-year-old won the Betfred Cheltenham Gold Cup in 2014 and could bid to become only the third horse to win both races following Golden Miller and L'Escargot.

I think the lads at the Club realise how much hard work is put in by the volunteers and staff at Everton in the Community and to come down and see what they do first hand, it’s really impressive. You have to say well done for what they do and I thank them for that hard work and for welcoming me down today.” Olivia Cardwell, Primary School Coordinator for Everton in the Community, added: “The children were all very excited when they found out that we had a special visitor coming along today to take part in their class with them and Gareth was fantastic at getting stuck in and helping us deliver the session. We have just finished delivering a six week block at St Aidan’s and the children have been fantastic; it’s been great to be able to welcome Gareth here today so they could show him the skills that we’ve taught them.” Funded by the Premier League Charitable Fund, the Primary School Sports programme is delivered throughout the Premier League and Football League and provides opportunities for children aged 4-11 to access fun, highquality sport sessions in schools. Delivered by Everton in the Community to schools across Merseyside, the programme is open to children of all abilities with dedicated staff providing specialist multisport coaching. ADAM – "I thought it would make an exciting start to the year to take the Dirk show to UK cities instrumental in the development, support and eventual triumph of Adam & The Ants. The intimacy of the four Islington Assembly Hall shows were such a gas that I felt it would be appropriate to choose venues with a similar atmosphere…. As a lover of vinyl, it also furthers my fervent commitment to the survival of the beautiful, traditional, labour of love of the 12” vinyl L.P. After all, you can’t sign a download….So in the face of the sterile perfection of the digital age, I invite you all to an evening of 100%British LEATHER ROCK xxxx "

How to smile with confidence on your wedding day ost newly engaged couples will tell you that the first thing everyone says after “congratulations” and “let me see the ring” is “so when’s the wedding?” In 1959 Brides Magazine recommended that couples set aside 2 months to prepare for their wedding. In 2015 they now recommend with 12 months to go that you book your venue. With many engaged couples, including Olympic Cyclists Laura Trott and Jason Kenny looking to perfect their smiles for the big day, booking the initial consultation with a dental specialist should also sit high on the list of ‘must do’s’ with more than 12 months to go. According to Dr Bilal Bhatti from Heaton Mersey Orthodontic Centre, an expert in Invisalign - the virtually invisible orthodontic treatment – who is currently treating Laura and Jason: “We see many people who are keen to achieve beautiful smiles for their wedding photographs – it is a prime motivation for tooth straightening - and what a difference it makes. If anyone is planning to get their smile improved for their biggest day then planning ahead is essential. Full Invisalign treatments take around 12 months, and those of greater complexity can take 18 months or longer.” Your wedding day is one you are likely to remember forever, a special day where you and your other half are the focus of everyone’s attention AND the focus of everyone’s cameras as they happily snap photographs of you both and the wider wedding party. It

M

34

is only natural that people want to look their best on such an occasion, with smiles widely on display all day, so an increasing number of brides and grooms-to-be, are looking to improve the look of their teeth, and turning to their dentists and orthodontists to help them. Olympic cyclists Laura Trott and Jason Kenney, who announced their engagement at Christmas, are still having Invisalign treatment to straighten their teeth. The discrete nature of the procedure has meant that they have worn their aligners while training, competing and even while being interviewed on TV. It is essential to Laura and Jason that any treatment they undertook did not impact on their busy racing and training schedules. The couple chose to undergo orthodontic treatment because they wanted to be able to smile with more confidence on the winners’ podium, and no doubt those smiles will be wider than ever on their wedding day.

Lifestyle crowd tickler

Dara O’ Briain Crowd Tickler Tour 2015 The Liverpool Empire May 3rd

I

t is been three years since Dara O’Briain, one of our finest live comedians, last hit the road. After a spell away in the TV studio making such successful shows as Mock the Week, The Apprentice: You’re Fired! and Star Gazing Live, Dara returns to his first love: live comedy. As he prepares for the 65-date tour of his brilliant new show, “Crowd Tickler”, Dara says, “that he cannot contain his excitement about treading the boards once more. “The other day, I sat in an empty theatre thinking,

36

‘I just love these rooms.’ I’m on the board of the Theatres Trust in order to protect these wonderful buildings. It’s not about nimby-ism; it’s because I adore these places. It still gives me such a thrill to walk on stage.” “When you arrive at an empty theatre, the potential is immense. You think, ‘This is going to be magical’,” beamed Dara,“ Then, when the show starts and you hear those waves of laughter in the auditorium, it’s just so enjoyable. It’s a huge rush." The other element of stand-up that Dara relishes is its sheer spontaneity. He is surely unrivalled in his ability to swap off-the-cuff

Lifestyle crowd tickler quips with his audience. “I love the fact that you can shape the entire evening by thinking on your feet. If Plan A doesn’t work, you have to come up with Plan B immediately.” 42-year-old Dara, who is married with two young children, adds that “When I’m questioning the audience, my stance is not, ‘How can I mock this person?’ It’s, ‘I am an eight-year-old meeting this person for the first time. What aspects of them do I want to talk and enthuse about?’” For instance, “The other day this guy in the audience told me he had a very dull-sounding job in HR. He said he was the comptroller – no one ever knows what that means. But it then emerged that in fact he worked in HR for a chocolate company.” “So I came up with the idea that he would put a large bowl of chocolate down on the desk in front of a potential employee, and then turn away. When he turned back, if the potential employee hadn’t got chocolate all over his face, then he’d get the job. If you can survive in an arena of grab-able chocolate without taking any, then you’re the man for the job.” Hitting his rhetorical stride by now, Dara continues that, “I then thought that his friend might work for a toothpaste company. How great that they could put aside their differences, despite working in jobs that nullify each other. It would be like a tobacconist being friends with a lung transplant surgeon. As long as they don’t talk about work, they’ll be OK.” Dara proceeds to outline the themes that he will be discussing in “Crowd Tickler”. “I’ll be talking about the awkward conversations we will have about grand children, about all the resources we’ve used up and all the wonderful advances we’ve casually wasted, like Concorde and the space shuttle.”

The comedian will also be tackling the subject of, “An angel therapist who is leading a campaign to remove fluoride from the water in Ireland because she thinks it’s poisoning the nation. For sheer energy, you have to admire her campaign.” Dara, who in 2012 had the honour of both presenting the BAFTA TV Awards on BBC1 and being a nominee, says that, “I always enjoy demolishing idiotic arguments. It suits comedy. If you take it to its logical conclusion, it’s madness. It’s a reductio ad absurdum.” But despite his wonderfully clever routines, the comedian underscores that the show is first and foremost about jokes. “It’s great to tackle subjects that are more thoughtprovoking, but I have this dread that people will go, ‘Oh Dara’s show – there’ll be some bit where he bores us with some science thing’.” Dara jokily sums up the effect that he hopes that “Crowd Tickler” will have on his audience. “I hope they’re unable to talk because I beaten them over the head with so much humour and punched them repeatedly in the face with jokes – that’s my aim!” he laughs. “I want them spent. I want them silently driving back home absorbing it all, while I’m left in the empty theatre quietly wiping the make-up off my face in a mirror surrounded by light bulbs.” He concludes that, “I make points here and there, but that’s secondary. Above all, I hope that it’s a great night’s entertainment. I hope people walk out and say, ‘Dara’s still got it. I hope he doesn’t leave it another three years!’ If they do that, then I will be delighted.” Details of Dara O’Briain’s 2015 UK spring tour, “Crowd Tickler,” can be found at www.offthekerb.co.uk 37

hilst more than one jeweller can be found in Liverpool’s busy centre, it can be hard to distinguish between them all. We visit a new kind of jewellers that combines traditional values with a modern friendly service that offers the value for money we all like to enjoy. Christopher Brown – a sixth generation jeweller, with several shops around the UK commissioned Lifestyle magazine to write about his companyBrown & Gold, in order to give our readers some awareness about his new branch in LIVERPOOL, ‘CHRISTOPHER BROWN JEWELLERS’ and his other two branches BROWN & GOLD at TOXTETH and PRESCOT. He wants the city to know what makes them unique to the other jewellers on the high street.

Lifestyle

JEWELLERY

“My Liverpool team are just fantastic and really understand our company values. They have been professional jewellers all of their lives. I opened up in the old Priors Jewellers shops on London Road and in Prescot because I knew I could build on their years of reputation and add my own personal values to make a destination jewellers that was really worth the visit.” What makes Christopher Brown Jewellers and Brown and Gold jewellers different from your standard jewellers? People use us because we offer something different. We stock jewellery right across the financial spectrum to accommodate all budgets. Our bespoke design team can create or remodel any jewellery you wish from either an original piece or personally design something unique and individual especially for you. One of our specialities is pre-owned and vintage jewellery. We also sell pre-owned watches – including Rolex; Breitling; Cartier and Omega to name a few. If you don’t see it in this branch we may have it in another or we will endeavour to source any item – customers’ needs are our number one priority. Most of all, we are great value – a quality that’s close to most people’s hearts!

I asked Christopher Brown why Liverpool? His answer was simple – “It’s all about people. Liverpool is a great city and customers will seek out a specialist shop that has a fantastic team of really experienced staff.” He knew he could trust his team to maintain his valuable reputation.

Asset lending is another unique and booming part of their business. Many people and families borrow against a watch or piece of jewellery to create a short term loan. “Many affluent people use our discreet asset lending service when in need of a bit of instant cash flow and also people use our service for smaller every-day loans as well” says Chris. “Why leave some of your greatest

Lifestyle assets sittingin the safe at home when they can be working for you to meet short term cash needs? Our largest loan to date was for over £30,000 against a massive diamond ring however we also make many loans for just a few hundred pounds depending on the customer’s needs” It’s a very interesting option when you need some short term cashflow. The service is completely confidential and items are stored in huge vaults. The loan period is for up to 7 months or sooner if the customer collects them before then. If someone requires from a couple of hundred to several

thousand pounds fast for a short term loan, asset lending is an ideal option. Christopher Brown Jewellers pride themselves on family traditional values; they say it is their ethos and staff that makes the company different in an ever changing world; they like to offer down to earth service with highly professional ethics and great value. pril is upon us, which can only mean one thing; Liverpool Lifestyle Awards have been and gone! And what a fantastic night was had by all. Walking into a room of Blue and Gold, Amanda had really excelled herself with the decoration and layout of the room. Sound checks all around, finishing off, and wine being added to the table to get ready for the doors to be opened at 7.30. Artists, Entrepreneurs, best restaurants, small to large businesses took to their tables. There was music and laughter from start to finish. Votes were judged by the public online, and I was lucky enough to become a part of the final five in the best newcomer award. Performing live on the night was exciting,

making sure I had chosen the correct music, prepared a speech, dressed appropriately and over all, networked. Performers are happy to go through the agonies of nights like these, not only does it provide a memorable experience but also gives some measure of how well things are going. Happy pets need clean beds

Lifestyle

AS NATIONAL PET MONTH APPROACHES, ACE Gentle gives top tips on keeping pet beds stain and odour-free Left alone, dirt, grime, hair and slobber will gradually build up on a pet’s bedding, so it should be something that is washed regularly to keep animals healthy, happy and tick free. Removing dirt and odours can often be tricky, but to tie in with National Pet Month in April, ACE Gentle, one of the leading stain removers and detergent boosters on the market, is giving a helping hand with their top tips. When buying bedding for a pet, firstly check that it can be put in the washing machine and, for ease of washing, choose something that has a loose cover. Before putting it in the washing machine, and to help protect the machine, give the bed a quick hoover to pick up as much loose hair, dirt and potential insect eggs as possible. Use a detergent booster every time the bedding is washed to remove stains and smells. ACE Gentle’s eight point wash system is just as effective on delicate items as it is on muddy blankets, so a cap full can be poured straight on the bedding when it’s in the 46

national pet week

washing machine’s drum. Try to get into a routine of washing an animals bedding once a month, or more if needed, as this will stop the dirt building up. Foam inserts should also be hoovered then washed with soapy hot water in the bath or shower. Make sure they are fully dry before putting the covers back on. Kevin Day, from Robinson Young, UK distributor for ACE, commented: “Dogs and cats in particular are adventurous and curious animals, who pick up plenty of dirt which is transferred on to their bedding. Therefore, it’s important that it’s washed regularly. ACE is particularly effective at removing odours and muddy stains from bedding and because of its gentle formula, pet owners can be assured that it is animal friendly.” ACE Gentle is currently available from Waitrose, Tesco, Sainsbury’s, some branches of Asda and Poundland. One litre of ACE Gentle Classic retails at £1.99 and ACE capsules retail at £3.99 for 14. A 700ml bottle of ACE Gentle launched in Poundland at the beginning of 2015. More information about ACE is available from www.acecleanuk.co.uk.

Lifestyle meat free may

Friends of the Earth MEAT FREE advance notice MAY 2OI5 People across the UK are being urged to give up meat this May to boost their health and help the planet. Meat Free May 2015, organised by environmental charity Friends of the Earth, is calling on people to change their diets for a month, with the aim of encouraging them to move on to lower and better meat diets more permanently. Most people eat meat twice a day without even thinking about it. But the amount of meat and fish we feast on is damaging our planet and our health. •

Livestock production makes up 14.5% of the total global greenhouse gas emissions and drives deforestation. Our taste for fish is also stripping the seas: over 70% of the world’s fish stocks are over or fully exploited. Lower-meat diets in the UK could prevent 45,000 early deaths each year, and save the NHS over £1.2 billion annually.

Interview by Joy Lewis

Lifestyle an evening at the races

grandslam madness

Over 25 years after they formed Madness are stronger than ever. To prove the point, this summer North London’s most famous and nuttiest pop institution embark on the biggest tour of their career. The Grandslam Madness itinerary takes the band, led by singer Suggs aka Graham McPherson to perform at a selection of the nation’s leading sporting grounds. What are the qualities that make Madness endure? In England alone there are probably 20 more festivals than there were when we began. You are playing to audiences who are there not just to see you. So through that we have managed to accrue a whole new generation by playing 40 or 50 festivals over the past 5 years. It’s been very flattering and marvellous to see so many different age groups enjoying the band. We are looking forward to this on the tour – people of all ages. I think the reason we endure is that we 52

genuinely do enjoy ourselves. From the very beginning you could see the joy in the early videos we made and hear it in the records. The fact that we were friends before this band started is key. I genuinely think the whole spark or art of craft and creativity was a by-product of our friendship. I think that’s what people feel. It’s a genuine experience. It’s not manufactured. I can’t ever remember being onstage and feeling fed up with the people around me.

Interview by Joy Lewis

Lifestyle an evening at the races

How do you keep the feeling of it being fresh? Traditionally, we don’t tour for months and months - we gave up on America and they probably gave up on us. Touring for years on end is what drains the lifeblood out of a lot of acts that I see. Each tour we do we try and make unique – and special. This one’s special as no one has ever done something like this – as big as this – at sporting venues like this. It’s a Madness madcap idea and we know people will respond to it.

In Madness time you’ve seen a reversal of the music business model from making money on the albums and touring at a loss to now its the tours that make money. New records may not sell as much but it must be important your two most recent albums (The Liberty of Norton Folgate and Oui, Oui, Si Si, Ja, Ja, Da Da) have been well received by critics and fans. Yes indeed we were teetering on the

cusp of the whirlpool of 80s nostalgia. We could have quite happily stopped flapping our flippers and slipped gently down into the hole with everybody else. But we flapped and flapped like mad and tried to write what we thought would be an album to stand with anything else we’ve done which I think we did. That gave us the ability to get out of the black hole. These albums didn’t sell in their millions but were extremely well received in the intellectual music circles and that has an effect on how you are perceived generally. If we just knocked out some old crap then you wouldn’t be held in high regard. It all added to the pot of being perceived as a working band again, we aren’t just lolling on the lilo of novelty we’re actually sailing around a bit on our own steam.”

The summer is pretty well mapped out for you. Grandslam Madness is an outdoor tour the like of which has never been seen in these islands. How will you keep yourself match fit? It’s like

preparing for war, a war of fun y’know? A war of fun and frolics but, unlike the Romans,

we are going to unleash heaven. I have a suspicion that if I didn’t have a few tequila shots before I went onstage I wouldn’t be quite as lubricated in the joints. Tequila and orange juice is the secret of keeping those limbs loose! I suppose our rituals are now so ingrained that I don’t notice what the rest of the band are doing! We can change the setlist nightly if we wish. The main thing is to keep it exciting for yourself, that’s the way to ensure the audience is kept excited too.

Racecourses make up quite a bit of your itinerary, are you fond of a flutter or a day at the track? Racecourses are great we’ve played a few in the past where they have been a few races and then you get a bit of Madness. It’s an unbeatable combination. I have a few flutters every now and then and have a bit of luck on the horses. I’m not a gambling man generally but I like it when you can see the steam coming out of the horses’ nostrils and that whole thing in front of you. I do like it but I’m terrible loser which has been my saving grace as far as gambling is concerned. It’s stopped me getting too involved. I’m really looking forward to all the racecourse shows. Last time we played at Haydock we had a tremendous gig something like 20,000 people turned up and they were only expecting 10,000. Simply Red had held the record up to that point so I think we are the record holders for Haydock, returning as reigning champions.

Are you looking forward to this tour? Of course!

It’s great to do something new. Something not done before. And it really feels like a tour of the people in places where they can have fun – where we can have fun.

Madness will be appearing at HAYDOCK NIGHTS: HAYDOCK PARK RACECOURSE –3rd JULY 2015 53

Through the late 90s and early 00s the band enjoyed incredible success worldwide, selling over 20 million records and bagging 11 top 10 singles, four top 10 platinum albums in the UK, selling out arena tours, and picking up a host of huge awards along the way, too. QUIRK THIS JAILHOUSE ROCKS

A

large proportion of my teenage years were spent shivering in the cells of the old bridewell on Argyle Street. Various cellmates included Frankie Goes To Hollywood, with the adjacent cells occupied by the everchanging personnel of The La’s or The Icicle Works or The Pale Fountains. We all paid out of our own pockets to be there and, as you might have already guessed, heating arrangements were fairly spartan. Thirty years on and the Grade II Listed former jailhouse where Charles Dickens was once inducted as a special constable is no longer a cheap, run-down rehearsal facility for Liverpool’s ambitious but skint young musicians. These days it is the outstanding Liverpool One Bridewell. Since coming under the directorship of brothers Stuart and Paul Fitzgerald in 2011 this unique and historical institution has become the very ‘cultural oasis in the heart of our magnificent city’ that it always promised to be since the initial building conversion in the early noughties. Liverpool One Bridewell is a great pub, pure and simple. It is run by people who know what great pubs should be about

58

Lifestyle nightlife and how they should be run i.e. hands on and with plenty of experience and loving care. For those same precise reasons, it is also a great restaurant, performance space and function room. The venue’s versatility combined with its popularity within the city’s various creative communities sees it hosting a wide variety of events. From wrap parties for the film industry, book launches, ale festivals, live music, performance art, exhibitions, antique valuations and fashion shows, to the more conventional stuff like weddings, birthdays, conferences, charity nights and business meetings. A fairly unique feature that Liverpool One Bridewell can boast is that individual ‘cells’ can be reserved for small parties who just want to drink or eat in private while perhaps watching a televised football match. An even more unique feature is that hosts can tell their guests that they are in the very room where two of the biggest hits of the 1980s, ‘Relax’ and ‘ Two Tribes’ were first written and performed.

BROWS THAT WOW? Let leading Head Makeup Artist Michael Perks show you some tricks!

1:

Brush out those brows. By using an eyebrow brush, brush them upwards so that they are tidy and you can see your natural shape! You have 3 points on your eyebrow, there is a start, arch and tail. These 2 points need to be in the correct place to lift the brow from 'Now to WOW'!

2: Follow the picture with the 3 points to mark your brow in place

3:

4: Finish by keeping those brows in shape by brushing through some clear mascara or brow gel.

Then using an angled brush, choose an eyeshadow which matches your hair colour and start to join the points up.

living your amazing life he power of Goal Setting Why have them? Who Has them? How to have effective ones? Interestingly over the past couple of years, more and more people have bought into the idea of having “bucket list”. A list of experiences or activities that we would like to have and experience before we die, before we die! How about working towards these things when we are very much are alive, infect doing some of these things off our buckets list are the very thing that stimulates life and living. Nothing worthwhile happens by accident! If you’re not working towards your goals chances are your working hard to make someone else’s come true. We accept goals in sport as the norm, imagine a game of football without goals, these are the very things that allow you to keep score, to know how you’re doing, to know where to place your effort. The great news is you only have to keep score in your own life, no one else’s. You are your NOT in competition with anyone else just yourself and your life. To set clear workable goals they have to be SMART Specific - What do I want to achieve. The more clear you are with this the easier to create a plan to achieve it. Measurable - How will you know in 3 months if you’re on track for your year goal. What milestones can you set along the way to keep you encouraged to keep going? Achievable - You decide what’s achievable it’s your goal Realistic - Again you decide if you believe you can hit your goal within the timeframes you have set Timely - Be specific with your timelines - if

T

the goal is 12 months from now then be sure to be clear on the date you will achieve your goal A word of warning if you have your goal in your head then it’s a wish, not a goal. Your goal comes to life when you take time to write it down, commit it to paper. We are all going to spend our time doing something, be sure you spend your time working towards something you want to achieve. Why not have pictures of your goal where you can see it daily to allow you to stay focused long enough to truly achieve what you set out do. There are no guarantees only this one, you will 100% not hit a goal you don’t have i can guarantee that. Try it for yourself, write down your goals for the next 12 months, you will be amazed how you feel working towards something you really care about. Empty your bucket list for 2105 and make your dreams a reality. If you have any questions please email

DIY...

Hello Lifestyle Readers! Spring is in the air and hopefully you can begin to banish those winter blues as the weather starts to become warmer. I had the opportunity to take part in a charity boxing match at the Titanic Hotel in Liverpool which was certainly an experience. Not one I’m planning on doing too often, mind! I’m proud to say I managed to make it through all three rounds which was no mean feat, and even though I didn’t win, we managed to raise a lot of money for charity which is what it was all about. It’s been a very boxing focused month for me, and I also attended a special dinner that featured the legend that is Sugar Ray Leonard! As part of my work with Checkatrade, I have been to various locations around Surrey including Woking FC and Leatherhead Golf Club to announce the new partnership bet ween Checkatrade and Surrey Trading Standards. Checkatrade, like Surrey, are committed to supporting legitimate businesses, stopping rogue traders and protecting consumers. Also this month, I travelled to Jersey to support local charity Les Amis as it celebrates 40 years of empowering Islanders with learning difficulties. I spent my time in Jersey at a public open day at the charity’s respite home, Mourant Lodge, in Trinity and visiting residents at some of the 30 houses and flats operated by Les Amis. As you may well be aware, this is a cause that is very close to my heart and I act as a patron of the Down’s Syndrome Association. Well that’s about it from me this month my friends – I hope you have the chance to make the most of my regular DIY top! Until next time… All the best,

FIXING A LOOSE IMAGE MATERIALS Red plugs

TOOLS

Screwdriver bit for drill - 4 to 6mm drill bit • 12 to 18v cordless drive driver becoming loose in hinges is a common problem. This quite often occurs when a heavy door has been hung for some time or when a door has had to be changed and taken on and off for some reason. All too often, all of a sudden you find that some screws are just not holding in as well as they did originally. A simple easy quick fix without taking off the door can be achieved. First off remove the loose screw by using the reverse action on your drill driver with screwdriver piece attached. Next change your drill piece from a screw bit piece to a drill driver. Using a 4mm to 6mm drill bit, drill out a hole to the length of about 40 mm. Next, insert a 5mm red plug, pushing it in as far as possible. Using the same screw as you had taken out, swop your drill bit to a screwdriver piece, and start to drive the screw home, you should straight away feel the hinge being pulled in tighter to the actual frame. It may be wise to do at least one screw on all three hinges on a heavy door. This tip can also be used on smaller lighter doors like cupboard doors, even if it’s a chipboard or veneered frame/ carcass, do all the same principles and this should fix the problem.

Hello

Lifestyle the last word with amanda moss Happy 7th Birthday to us!

I

s it just me or does it also seem to you like we are hurtling through 2015? Easter already! Which now means I can officially count down to the summer holidays! That always lifts my spirits. (I write this looking out onto murky and grey skies but this won’t dampen my spirits.) I have just celebrated two successful events, the Bierkeller Liverpool Lifestyle Awards and then the Lord Mayor’s Charity Fashion show, which was an honour to be asked to direct. Now with fashion in the forefront of my mind, I am continuing the momentum with Manchester Fashion Week and then of course the Creative Beauty North West Fashion and Beauty Awards. I love seeing an idea come to fruition, turning dreams into reality and if can pardon the cliche that is what I can do. I offer fashion designers the opportunity to 66 springboard their career into the spotlight,

I put their designs on models and bring their images to life with a catwalk show . I have seen designers go on to open their own boutiques and flourish, some even have dressed celebrities and this does make such a difference as they once might not have thought this possible. With this in mind I am looking to give a designer the opportunity to open Liverpool Fashion Week this year. With our venues being The Liner Hotel and Liverpool Marina, there is a nautical theme and I am looking for someone to design a nautical collection to showcase on the opening night in front of the fashion media. Together we can achieve great things and push Liverpool Fashion Week further into the spotlight. Step up to the challenge and focus on the endless possibilities waiting for you. Amanda Moss
