CAPITAL&CENTRIC ANNOUNCE MAJOR NEW DEAL TO MAKE LIVERPOOL THE HOME OF THE UK’S FILM AND TELEVISION INDUSTRY • Property developers CAPITAL&CENTRIC team with Twickenham Studios to deliver major filming destination for the North • The city’s iconic former Littlewoods building to become home to Hollywood standard sound stages and hub for interior filming • The £50m project will capitalise on Liverpool as a major filming destination and recent Channel 4 shortlisting and could support over 2,000 industry jobs across the city LIVERPOOL is set to become the new home for the big and small screen, with plans unveiled for a Hollywood standard filming complex. CAPITAL&CENTRIC, owners of the city’s iconic former Littlewoods building, have today announced a deal with the UK’s oldest film studios, Twickenham, to expand to the city. The world-renowned Twickenham Studios is famous for its work on movies such as ‘Blade Runner’, ‘The Italian Job’, ‘Gandhi’ and more recently ‘The Martian’ and ‘Baby Driver’. First look images of the £50 million ‘Littlewoods Studios’ show new development alongside the restored 1930s art deco style building. The project will feature two new 20,000sq.ft sound stages alongside supporting workshops; wardrobe and prop storage; and offices. In a major coup for Liverpool, regeneration specialists CAPITAL&CENTRIC will restore the Edge Lane building, once home to the Football Pools. Twickenham Studios, who have signed an agreement for lease on 85,000sq.ft, will become the hub’s first anchor tenant. The deal is subject to planning permission. tim heatley, co-founder of CApItAL&CeNtrIC, said: “Littlewoods is one of Liverpool’s most loved buildings – it’s only fitting that we give the city something they’ll be proud of. Twickenham Studios couldn’t be a better fit. They’ll bring a 6
century’s worth of film-making heritage and help to write a new chapter for the creative industries in and around Liverpool.
‘Peaky Blinders’ filmed on its streets. Last year alone, the city clocked up 1,359 days of filming across 289 projects.
“Relighting the excitement and buzz around Littlewoods for a new generation of creative people will be incredible. Our legacy will be Liverpool becoming a proper powerhouse for the film industry, one that will inspire the city’s young people to take up a career in production.
Joe Anderson, mayor of Liverpool, said: “The arrival of such an iconic film production company as Twickenham Studios to Liverpool is a fantastic vote of confidence in the city’s booming film industry.
“We’re taking what is an important part of Liverpool’s social fabric and creating something that has been on the city’s wish list for a long time. We couldn’t be prouder.” The deal will bring a respected name in the film industry to Liverpool. Twickenham’s London studio was the UK’s largest when set up in 1913, and went on to be the setting for a roster of screen classics – including the Beatle’s ‘Help’ and ‘A Hard Day’s Night’ in the 60s. maria Walker, Chief Operating Officer of twickenham studios, said: “This is a major milestone in our history. When we saw the vision for Littlewoods we knew we had to be a part of what will be an incredibly special place. “Liverpool’s architecture, accessibility and can do attitude sees film-makers return to the city time and time again. With the added benefit of our studios, they’ll have access to gold-standard interior facilities right on the doorstep of unique exterior locations. “It will be great to see Liverpool become an international focal point for TV and film.” Directors and producers flock to Liverpool, with blockbuster productions including ‘Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them’ and
“We have huge plans for the Littlewoods site and have been working very closely with Capital and Centric to make these ambitions a reality. This deal will no doubt act as a catalyst to attract other leading lights to the city which will further develop Liverpool’s strong foundations in the creative sector. “The timing could not be better as we get ready to welcome Channel 4 to showcase what Liverpool can offer ahead of their decision on where to locate its new HQ and creative hubs.” Recent statistics, by economic experts Ekosgen, showed that Littlewoods Studios will not only create over 570 direct jobs, but could support over 2,000 additional jobs thanks to the halo effect on the Liverpool city region and result in an annual boost of £124m (GVA) to the local economy. It is expected that the studios will be up and running in 2020.

LIVERPOOL CRUISE TERMINAL TO ‘SEAS’ THE SUMMER
It’s going to be a record breaking summer for Liverpool Cruise Terminal. June and July will be the busiest ever as they gear up to welcome 25 different vessels with 37,317 international passengers and 17,348 crew. Highlights include Celebrity Eclipse, which returns for an overnight call on 12/13 June and the return of Royal Princess Princess Cruises’ flagship vessel on Monday 10 June which recently appeared on ITV’s ‘The Cruise’ and is back in the city for the first time since 2015. The jewel in the crown of the cruise call schedule this summer is the return of Cunard’s Queen Elizabeth on 23 July, which also coincides with the 80th anniversary of the launch Cunard’s RMS Mauretania II from Cammell Laird in Birkenhead. An estimated 54,000 visitors will be coming ashore in the next two months, generating a predicted £2.6 million for the local economy in spending in shops, bars and restaurants. Visitors to the Cruise Terminal this summer are in expert hands as the team at Cruise Liverpool, who won Tourism Event of the Year at the recent Liverpool City Region Tourism Awards for Disney Magic on the Mersey which was organised in partnership with the team at Liverpool Waters. 16
Looking to the horizon, the first phase of construction of Liverpool’s new Cruise Liner Terminal has begun. The new facility, which replace the current terminal, will enable the city to turnaround some of the world’s biggest cruise ships to its UNESCO listed World Heritage waterfront. Councillor Wendy Simon, Deputy Mayor and cabinet member for culture, tourism and events, said: “A total of 25 ships in two months is incredible, as a city we are very proud to be the home of passenger shipping and are exceptionally excited to welcome so many visitors to the city. “It forms a solid basis for our exciting plans for the new cruise liner terminal which are rapidly taking shape.” Pete Murney, Liverpool’s Cruise and Operations Manager, said: “The next two months will be our busiest ever at Cruise Liverpool, and we can’t wait of visitors and crew to experience our amazing city and everything that it has to offer.” Liza Marco, asset manager at
Peel-owned Liverpool Waters, said: “To have such a busy and worldrenowned cruise terminal operating at Princes Dock is something we are incredibly proud of and exactly what Peel Land and Property wanted to achieve when we gifted the land to the city. “Not only is it fantastic to welcome so many wonderful ships to Liverpool Waters, we are also delighted to see that this summer will once again bring the Disney Magic cruise liner back to the city. “The ship, as well as the now award-winning Magic on the Mersey event, has brought thousands of people together at Princes Dock to experience a day of entertainment and magic that only Disney can offer.” For more information about the 2018 cruise schedule and to download a copy, visit www.cruise-liverpool.com. Arrival and departure times are published on the Cruise Liverpool Facebook page a few days prior to the cruise ship calling – www.facebook.com/liverpoolcruiset erminal - or follow the team on Twitter & Instagram @CruiseLpool

The successful entrepreneur has trekked for Action Against Hunger @acf_uk who he have supported for 3-4 years, I previously trekked in Ethiopia 2 years ago were we helped raise almost£100k. We were a team of restaurateurs and chefs (the charity work closely with the hospitality industry) The trek took place in the Langtang valley which was badly affected in the 2015 earthquake. In fact the village of Langtang was completely destroyed. We trekked through along the Langtang river for around 60 miles, camping overnight with a team of sherpas to help carry our kit and finished at 4400 meters. Recently Paddy and Hanover Street Social manager, Steph, trekked the Langtang mountains in Nepal to raise money for Action Against Hunger. The pair trekked through Ethiopia last
restaurants in the city since its opening eight years ago, Hanover Street Social didn’t disappoint in a recent visit. Proving that they haven’t flagged in their quality of ingredients, taste and service over the years, as is so easy with many restaurants who become tired after a few years. Quite the opposite here. For starters I chose the spicy chicken satay sliders withal and avocado slaw, i could only manage one of them. My friend had the gilled stornoway black pudding on hash brown with poached egg and grain mustard. I don’t eat black pudding but by going on his facial expressions and the way he devoured it, he was pleased with his choice. I absolutely adored the food here especially as I steered away from my usual steak and chips and went with the special of the day, Seabass with kale and
year, managing to raise close to £100,000 for the charity. Paddy said, “ We’ve always supported charities every since we opened Salt House Tapas, our first restaurant, 8 years ago starting with Alder Hey children's hospital and Whitechapple Homeless charity and this is an extension of that effort, helping people who are not as fortunate as us in any way we can. These charities are really important to us as Action against Hunger gave £0.92p of every £ they raise directly to the people who need it most, they are helping some of the most vulnerable people in places such as Syria, Ethiopia, Nepal and are non political and the association with restaurants works really well. crispy potatoes. My friend opted for the slow braised lamb shoulder, champ mash, honey glazed carrots and rich gravy sauce. Both plates were almost licked clean. For me, that as the best fish I have had in a long time. The restaurant offers a 2 or 3 course lunch starting from a very reasonable £12.95, monday to friday. It’s definitely the place I would choose to break up a shopping trip or hold a casual business lunch. It’s also a great place to enjoy a drink after work, especially during these long summer evenings. Superb food and delightful service and most of all, delicious food. Bravo to the brasserie
the warm, inviting and relaxed service is accompanied by fresh and daily changing selection of ‘entrees’ and ‘plats de resistance’ , as well as a variety of mouthwatering Mediterranean dishes. C helsey Lee, 25, is definitely one to watch. The talented St Helens performer has cofounded Moth Physical Theatre Ltd with three drama school friends, Charlie, Emma and Amber, who are now touring the country with their new family puppet show that has an important message.
Using physical storytelling, puppetry and an original sound track, Wild Wilma tells the tale of an orphan who sets out on a quest to find her identity. Wild Wilma was created to cater for children who don't "fit in" and are criticised for their individuality. Wilma teaches children that it is okay to be different and to stay true to who you are. Moth Physical Theatre are set to visit several venues across the UK, such as The Bombed Out Church, and are due to feature in a special production at the Crossrail Place Roof Garden, Canary Wharf in London later this year. Chelsey is now looking for theatres across Merseyside to secure future dates for their theatre workshops and continued tour of Wild Wilma. how did you get into physical theatre? I have always wanted to 22
perform. I chose physical theatre because it emphasises storytelling through different techniques such as movement, puppetry and circus. I have always been interested in Fine Art and Acting and this style of theatre allows me to fuse my two passions together. The beauty of physical theatre is the fact that you can use anything, you are taught to look around you and use what you have, everything but the kitchen sink is a theme running with our shows! What do you love about Wild Wilma? Wilma celebrates the people who may be 'odd', shy or maybe they just don't follow the crowd and aren't a member of the 'popular gang'. Wilma is their voice. It's so important for kids and young people to be exposed to this message as it is drilled into them since day one that they should behave in a certain way to avoid standing out. Wilma stays true to herself and our message is that everyone is special and different, and those attributes should be nurtured and celebrated. You are so inspirational and have been nominated for the positive Awards, how does this make you feel? I have to thank my parents as I have been fortunate to have been brought up with strong guidance. My parents have never told me I couldn't do something, I was always told I could achieve anything
I wanted and that if I want something I should go out and get it. It's an amazing feeling to be nominated and I am so very grateful. What has been your driving force? When I was growing up, we didn't have a lot of money and I have had to work hard to get anything. I basically said to myself "Right, I need to put a rocket up my ***" and so I just went out and knocked on doors until I found a way. It is so important to believe in yourself. Everyone has dreams and this has always been mine. What are your plans for the rest of the year? We have just performed at From The Forest Festival in Walthamstow and our next stop will be at Deer Shed Festival with Wild Wilma. We plan to continue to spread our message and aim to teach techniques to build confidence through our workshops and performances. to book moth physical theatre for a private show, corporate event or educational workshop, please contact theatremoth@gmail.com

THE UNMIS SAB FAMIL LE Y CHRIS TMAS OF 20 SHOW 18!
RADIO & TV PRESENTER, SASSY MUM & SOCIALITE CLAIRE SIMMO hello!!! I have enjoyed another whirlwind month of fabulous events in our city. I had the pleasure of meeting Olivia and her lovely mum Kim a few years ago when they came to the Radio City Tower… so when Kim asked me to host their annual Butterfly Ball for the Olivia Alice Foundation after Olivia sadly passed away 4 years ago – it was an absolute honour and privilege to do so. The evening was superbly organised by Kim Walker and Go Events as always had everything running ship shape! The money raised will help so many local children and I now feel part of their wonderful family. It was also the return of the Rock n Roll Marathon – with a 5k on the Saturday and then half and full marathon on the Sunday – I have hosted this event with Graeme White and Brian Porter every year – and to have seen it grow and now have thousands of people taking part from all over the world is just incredible!!!! Superbly organised as always and I cannot wait until next year! Carolyn Hughes has now made her Christmas Lunch a must have for anyone’s diary – so I knew that her Blooming Marvellous Summer Lunch at The Florist wasn’t going 24
to disappoint. Simply one of the most stunning venues in the city, it still creates a huge amount of excitement (and selfies!) for all attending. I was delighted to host this for Carolyn and Cash for Kids and I am sure that if this becomes an annual event then it will sell out in seconds! It was also fabulous to catch up with one of my most genuine and lovely friends – Cheryl Fergison – who now she has moved to the North West we will be seeing loads more of each other. I have met some wonderful people over the years – one of them being the lovely Jane Wolstenholme, otherwise known as Jane Costello or now Catherine Isaac. Jane is an author and I was thrilled she asked me once again to host her book launch at Gusto Heswall as she is quite simply one of the most talented and hilarious writers I have known. Her latest book “You Me Everything” takes her down a different path – as well as her perfect comic timing – it also deals with the emotional side of finding a need for care for your parent. We also were raising money for Cash for Kids – so thank you for everyone who generously donated. If you have read this column before or listen to Radio City 2, you will know I am slightly obsessed with The Greatest Showman.. so it seemed only the right thing to do when an auction prize for a sing along at the Tower was bought for Cash for Kids back in March – that I should host the evening! I was off to Lili Bizarre and dressed as a ringmaster as quick as a flash! (The closest I’ll ever get to Hugh Jackman I think). There is nothing I like more than live music … so I have been excited about Lionel Ritchie coming to the Leigh Sports Village since we bought the tickets months ago! He did not disappoint, nor did Shane Filan who belted out a catalogue of Westlife Hits before Lionel took to the stage! My best mate Dale and I danced from start until finish – what a showman Lionel is- and so funny – what a sense of humour. When you know every word to every song and never want a concert to finish … you know, as Dale said “it’s the best gig of your life!”.

DEL AMITRI Del Amitri went on hiatus for thirteen years between 2002 and 2014. What brings you back to the stage now? Well, after we reformed for a few weeks of gigs in 2014 we enjoyed the experience so much (after initially being very sceptical and trepidatious) that we always thought we’d do it again someday. An offer to do Edinburgh Castle came in, and having made such an arse of it in the nineties we thought it might be good to try and make amends. And four years felt like a decent enough period of time to stay out of people’s faces. So we’re just doing a week of shows, finishing at Glasgow Barrowlands Ballroom, a venue we’ve been desperate to get back to for seventeen years. Will the band be playing any new material on this tour? We deliberately avoided that in 2014, we just wanted to do a comprehensive review of our output between 1985 and 2002. We called it “The A to Z of Us” and we felt new stuff would have fogged the glass. Besides which, we were so paranoid about trying to attain the same standards of our heyday that we feared the whole audience might sod off to the bogs as soon as we played something unfamiliar. This time we have given ourselves a little more leeway so we’ll try some new things and see if we can make them fit. Is there any sign of a new Del 28
Amitri album on the horizon? We snuck out a couple of tracks in 2014 in a far flung corner of the web. They’re still fluttering there, uneaten husks. We are discussing what might be justifiable. We have songs. We just don’t quite have a raison d’être. Which is French for excuse. A great many bands of the eighties and nineties have reformed to milk the “heritage” circuit. how do you view your own place within the contemporary live scene? We’ll milk any teat proffered. We’re too old for this game so are grateful for any opportunity to make fools of ourselves - wouldn’t you be? As for the heritage tag, we were heritage before we were thirty. We gave up trying to be modern in 1986. We grew moustaches and sideburns in a sarcastic nod to the grim, unhip man-rock that clogged the seventies. If we had stuck to being chirpy, angst-riddled indie boys then this sort of thing might be harder to pull off. We always sold ourselves as a working band; plodders, drinkers and grouches. We just about still qualify as men, although it won’t be long before we turn into old ladies, as all men are destined to do. By that point we might actually be a decent group. some of Del Amitri’s extensive repertoire of b-sides have become favourites with fans. Will any of
these be getting an airing in July? On the last tour we threw in a B-side called In The Meantime which we’d never done live. We’ll find something similar - there are a few options. I’ll ask folk on Twitter what they fancy and then completely ignore all of them. All seven people. B-sides don’t exist anymore, do they? I find that quite awful. They’re like short stories to the album’s novel. They give you a chance to do things outside the remit, relax a little bit. We’re casting about for a new cover too but we’ve not had much inspiration. Maybe we’ll do a Haircut 100 medley? You formed Del Amitri in your teens and are now touring in your fifties. how have things changed for you as a performer? The further you travel from your youth the less bloody vital every aspect of the project becomes. It goes from being a do-or-die obsession, heartbreaking and ecstatic in equal measure, to a warmly pleasurable bit of mild exertion. You can’t hit the frenzy of yore but you can nail things with a little more solidity and authority perhaps. The angst ebbs and the confidence flows. Not that you’re not still besides yourself with nerves every time you step into the light. But it’s a mission and it’s unfinished. There’s always something more to say.

JULIE LAWSON tell us about yourself (your work background) I work for HMRC and have done for the last 15 years. I’ve been married to my Rock Ron for 27 years. I’m a mum of two sons Andrew and Neil and nana to Beatrice. Why have you decided to put on a ball I’ve always wanted to put on a gala ball a bit different to the normal type of fundraising ball. I wanted this one to be the biggest in the northwest for Alzheimer’s, which is so close to my heart. I went to see Lawrence Kenwright from Signature hoping he would sponsor me as I had originally booked St Georges Hall, but costs were so high. The meeting went so well that Lawrence very generously offered me Cunard Building free of charge for my ball amongst other help towards the evening. I will always be indebted to him for giving me this chance to make my dreams come true in memory of my parents. What can people expect on the night Well music is very important for people with dementia and a Alzheimer’s you will find most of my fundraising it musically based. So we arrive at 6.30pm at the British Music Experience for drinks on arrival and on stage will be a fabulous Liverpool Band called Red Rum Club….this is our NOW…then we go into the magnificent Cunard first class lounge which has been refurbished and we go back in time musically as well as a sumptuous 3 course meal including half a bottle of wine per person. So 36
how has Alzheimer’s had an impact on your life Alzheimer’s has devastated us as a family. My nan was the first person who was diagnosed. She had 9 living children and 4 of them have been diagnosed my Dad was one of them and the first of the children. Although when he was diagnosed it was a relief to find out the diagnosis but nothing prepared us for the following 11 years. Dad went through every single stage of the disease. It was so sad watching the decline. One minute he was fine then next a different person unsure of anything including his surroundings and not knowing who he was speaking to. He was scared and frightened. The deterioration was heart breaking and nothing prepares you for it. It was made worse when my brother died suddenly around 18 months after dad’s diagnosis. He was 45. I had no one who could help take the burden. My husband and sons were amazing. But then in 2011 Mum was diagnosed with deep depression and dementia. Because their needs were so different they could not be together in the same home. So my days off were spent picking mum up to take her to visit dad miles away, then taking Mum back to her home before finally getting home. That went on for over 3 years. I was lucky as my sons both helped too on their days off. They both deteriorated suddenly January 2014 in two different hospitals at the same time One in Aintree the other in Southport. That was horrendous. Then Mum deteriorated and she died quite quickly on 3 March shortly after Dad got Sepsis and he deteriorated but got over the sepsis and he died on 23 April 7 weeks after mum. It was the worse time ever as you can imagine. What do you hope to achieve from the ball
To raise as much money and awareness for this dreadful disease, as possible. It is now Britain’s NO1 killer. I promised myself when my parent died that I would fundraise until a cure is found and beyond. I want to do so much more too fundraising and social events aimed at people who are isolated and lonely to help reduce social isolation. tell us about your fundraising to date Well over the last 13 years I’ve raised money for the Air Cadets, Alzheimer’s, Cancer Research, The Brain Charity, Kingsway homeless Shelter, Team Sefton and also a for a Thailand Orphanage. I’ve never ever counted how much money Ive raised over the last 13 years but a conservative estimate is around 80K plus. But this year alone since January to May I’ve raised around 9K. I have set up a Monthly afternoon Live Show at the Plaza Cinema Waterloo. It’s very much a community project. We have 3 acts per month and the show is 2 hours long. That has become quite successful and last month in May 206 people attended and to date 170 tickets are pre sold for June 2018 show with two weeks to go. The Lord Mayor and Lady Mayoress of Sefton are delighted and want to come to all of the shows. I hope to do something with them in the future at the town hall. Last year I was invited to a Royal Garden Party at Buckingham Palace, which was truly amazing. It is a pinch yourself moment, especially walking through those gates. You have been nominated for a merseyside woman in business awards, how does that make you feel When I go the phone call to say I was a finalist for Merseyside woman of the year I nearly fell off the chair. It was a total surprise and I wasn’t expecting it. After the initial shock I am delighted with the nomination. Its nice to think someone thinks that highly of what you do to nominate you. My husband and sons are so proud as are my friends and family too. I am sure whoever wins on the day will deserve it. I’m happy to be a part of the day.

The event was hosted by Radio City 2's Claire Simmo and supported by actresses Gillian Kearney and Cheryl Fergison. The enchanting venue was summer party themed with a vintage ice cream cart, a vintage donut wall, floral glitter face-painting and a host of beach party props to make the party go with a swing. After a Pimms reception, lunch was served in the restaurant and afterwards guests carried on the party with a live band downstairs. 40

seconds, were your surprised? ‘The Roadies surprise us every day, we’re so blessed to have them as a part of our lives and the fact they want to come and see us perform our own songs live on tour is a gift we’re so grateful for.’ Do you have any demands for your dressing rooms when you’re on tour? ‘We really aren't that band that take themselves too seriously, aslong as the dressing room has a kettle and tea bags, we’re all set.’ tell us about what you got up to in LA recently ‘We stayed with Jake Paul in the Team 10 house...things got messy and goats were involved!’
have you got a message for your fans? ‘Always stay positive and see the happy things in life, there’s so much to enjoy in this world so you don’t wanna miss it, if your ever stuck and feeling low, reach out to us or a fellow Roadie and we’ll show you just how much fun you can actually have. This family we’ve built is not just for us boys but it’s for you guys too and you should cherish every moment we get to be together, share music, have a great laugh and spread love between one another. We love you Roadies!!!’ Where is the ultimate venue that you dream to perform at? ‘Wembley Stadium, enough said HAHA’
What’s it like being compared to One Direction? ‘Well they performed at Wembley Stadium so hopefully we’ll be there soon too. Honestly it’s just a great compliment, our music is very different and we’re all 5’6 in comparison but thanks to anyone who compares the similarities.’ is there anyone you would like to collaborate with? ‘Hmmmmm, Camila Cabello has a voice of Gold! It would be fun writing songs with her.’ so have you any summer holiday plans after tour? ‘After tour we plan to drop a surprise for the Roadies and then we want to see our European fans, they’ve been patient for so long for us!’
pushing children forward to excel we are making our society a better one to live in. What is the best piece of advice you have been given? I was sitting at home with my son, Alfie Boy, who was 15 at the time, discussing one of my business deals that was going sour. He turned to me and said: You are Alfie Best....you can do anything you want. Your plan is to make Wylecrest parks the biggest mobile home operator in the world, how will you achieve that? By sustained growth, focus and making sure my team is exhilarated to follow the same passion and dream that we are building for the Wyldecrest Group. We have 72 parks in the UK and we are growing fast and making new acquisitions all the time. What is your proudest achievement? Starting the Wyldecrest Parks Charity and hopefully changing children's lives for the better.
P O S I T I V E AWA R D N O M I N AT I O N ALFIE BEST so congratulations on being nominated for a positive Award, do you think of yourself as a role model? I don't see myself as a role model but it seems that other people do. To the vast majority of people it appears that my upbringing was not the norm. Ironically, to me there could be nothing more normal. I didn't know anything different. All I have been trying to do all my life has been to better myself and that of the community around me with each day that passes. You started your business when you were 14, do you think there are more restrictions on kids today and health and safety rules stopping youngsters, for example, kids aren’t legally allowed to work until they are 16? I came from a community where it was accepted that you could start your work from a young age. Different children mature at different points in their lives. I would say it is up to us as a society to encourage our children to do better everyday of their lives. We are their peer teachers and by 46
have you any unfulfilled ambitions? Life is one big achievement and you should continue to drive forward and set new goals all the time. I have many goals that I still want to fulfil and when they are achieved I will set myself new tasks and targets to reach. how do you relax? I never switch off. My work is my relaxation and my life. Do you like holidays and as this is the July issue, have you any plans this summer? I will be flying out to Barbados where I own a number of different properties and I have further business plans on the island. It will be a working holiday but where better to spend some time.

With over 20 years in the business he has worked for some of the biggest names in the industry such as Venmores and David Wilson Homes. La Finca eivissa 14 Back Colquitt St, Liverpool L1 4DE
Have you been to La Finca Eivissa? They are located in the heart of the city centre. The spirit of the white isle across 3 floors linked via a tunnel to their newly refurbished basement bar ‘La Finca Bodega’. La Finca Eivissa hosts warm Balearic vibes, chill areas, fusion tapas, sangrias, Spanish & local beers & house speciality cocktails as well as detox drinks and smoothies. A place to relax in the evening and party into the early hours with live entertainment on weekends. The venue has a very relaxed style of service as is common on the shores of the Mediterranean. Order your food at the bar and take a seat in one of the bar swings or comfortable day beds and take in the atmosphere. Operator Steve Thompson previously set up & managed the previous Bar Bodega (Now La Finca Bodega) almost 7 years ago and has now created a brand new concept that has been building for a number of years - ‘La Finca Eivissa’. The beautiful listed building on back Colquitt Street is a perfect fit for the new venue with its classic brick arches and finch styled beamed ceilings.
Sid Vance & Co opened at a satellite site on Picton Road last year before finally finding their ideal location in January this year, 2018, at 171 Rose Lane in leafy Mossley Hill – Liverpool. The office now has 6 full time staff as well as several part time. The agency specialises in sales, lettings and, commercial deals. Managing Director of Sid Vance & Co – Sid Vance commented “Setting up my own agency has always been something I have wanted to do. It was all about the right time and location. Last year the time was right and our new premises on Rose Lane are perfect for us. This is central to where the majority of our stock is based and is a lovely part of the city to do business from. We could not have hoped for a better start with us taking on several new developments in the city as well as being asked to manage several existing sites such as Tobacco Warehouse and Bispham House in the city centre. Our medium term plan is to expand to the Wirral, City Centre Liverpool and eventually to Cheshire.”
Stephen has been a frequent visitor to the island of Ibiza since a very young age having worked abroad many times and felt Liverpool was missing a place of this kind. The ideas for La Finca Eivissa have evolved over time into the styles of food, drinks and service you can find in Ibiza and the Balearics. Battle of the Brushes is part of the world’s largest celebration of make up artistry, the International Make Up Artist Trade Show (IMATS), and Hugh Baird University Centre undergraduate, Sarah, outshone the competition to take first place at this year’s spectacular final. Each year, Battle of the Brushes brings together students from recognised make up schools, and those who graduated within the last 12 months, to compete for the chance of international exposure for their work, as well as some amazing prizes. Sarah is in her final year of the Foundation Degree (FdA) in Creative Make up Design and Practice at the Hugh Baird University Centre, which is validated by the University of Central Lancashire. Along with hundreds of entrants from across the globe, she submitted ten images for the first stage of Battle of the Brushes and was one of just eight finalists selected to compete in the Beauty/Fantasy category at IMATS in London. Explaining how she came to enter 48
the competition, she said: “During the second year of the Foundation Degree, my tutor suggested using a particular module as a focus to build a portfolio worthy of entering into the competition. It consisted of five commercial/editorial images and five creative/sfx concepts. It was a motivational goal to have and meant that the images I submitted for the first stage of Battle of the Brushes were the culmination of two years of work.” The theme for the beauty/fantasy category for 2018 was Wildwood Warrior, described as alluring and epic, with a touch of mystical, vibrant playfulness. Finalists had to present the judges with ‘before’ photos of their models, a mood board and a brief description of their artistic inspirations. They then had two hours to complete their looks in full view at the exhibition visitors before an on-stage presentation and judging. Sarah said: “Making it to the final was an amazing achievement in itself and I was excited to take part. My tutors really helped me prepare for the competition with lots of research and advice. They supported me all the way and the University Centre contributed towards the costs too. Winning first place felt surreal, it was like a dream.” As well as a cheque for £4,000 and beauty products worth around £600, the prize includes a feature in internationally published Make Up Artist Magazine. Sarah’s work will be showcased in the magazine and featured in IMATS advertising campaigns and show graphics. It has already been seen not only by industry leaders attending the show but also by thousands of social media users who follow the event. Diane Flanagan is Programme
Lead for the FdA and BA (Hons) Top up in Creative Make up Design and Practice at the Hugh Baird University Centre. Speaking after Sarah’s incredible win, she said: “IMATS is the biggest trade show for the make up industry and a must-see for professionals and students alike. We took eighteen students to the event this year, ranging from those just starting off at Foundation Entry level to those about to progress to the BA (Hons) Top up. For them, the event is an opportunity to see the very latest trends and products, network with the top names in the industry and get an insight into the professional standards expected of them by the time they graduate. This was the first time any of our undergraduates has entered Battle of the Brushes so for Sarah to not only reach the final but to be overall winner is absolutely huge. We couldn’t be more proud of her. Her win doesn’t just enhance her own career prospects but also inspires our current and future undergraduates and raises the profile of the degree programme offer we offer in Creative Make up Design and Practice at the Hugh Baird University Centre.” If you’re interested in a career in the creative industries, to find out more about any of the degree programmes at the Hugh Baird University Centre, or the see Sarah’s video about her Battle of the Brushes journey, visitwww.hughbaird.ac.uk/universit y-centre. DARREN VISION What do you need to know?
This statistic paints a big, big picture ... all by itself this statistic tells multiple stories.
someone who would ... you would ... because you are the expert in your own business. So what is the vital statistic in your business?
Well they should.
What has actually happened in this time is that the supply of food had improved ... sewage no longer leaks into the water system ... health care has improved and is more widely available ... and there is increased literacy amongst mothers, meaning they are making more informed choices around medicines and schooling. This one vital statistic about improved child mortality tells all these stories.
Today there are just too many statistics to get your head around ... too much data ... information overload ... some stats contradict others ... and sometimes we don’t know which are the important ones ... the vital ones.
So what is your vital statistic? We tend to be surrounded with lots of KPI’s (Key Performance Indicators) and new measures keep getting introduced without ditching some of the old ones ... so how do you see the wood for the trees?
How about this for a surprising statistic. In 1960 the child mortality rate in Saudi Arabia was 277 ... 277 children per 1,000 died before the age of five, that’s a pretty scary fact. But forty years later this had dropped to 55.
If you could reduce the number of key dials that you look at in your business then you could get down to the ones that really matter ... but how do you do this? It’s a difficult question and I’m not sure I would really know the answer ... but I know
Vital Statistics ... it sounds a bit out
of date ... not quite Politically Correct ... does anyone really ask about vital statistics nowadays?
The one you need to monitor as the heartbeat of your business ... the one that tells a story. Maybe you can’t drill it down to just a single measure, maybe that’s too much to ask. But you could probably reduce it to a top three. The chances are it would sharpen your focus. Take a few moments to answer these critical business questions? What are you measuring and what does success really look like for you and your business? When did you last look at the way you measure your business and the effectiveness of your people? When did you last analyse what needs analysing?

Lifestyle
school’s out for summer! this, my friends, is the most wonderful time of the year. I don’t understand parents lobbying for shorter www.lifestylemonthly.co.uk school holidays - why have children if you don’t want to spend editor@lifestylemonthly.co.uk time with them? We only realistically have 18 summers with @amandalifestyle them before they fly the nest and go off with their friends, so I want to cherish every moment. It’s the only time of the year I put down the laptop and spend all day with them frolicking in the sun. For me and my brood holidays are a happy, carefree time. As always we’ll be heading to Cyprus for a month. We know what to expect, it is home from home and we have friends we meet out there every year. For some though, a holiday can be fraught with stress. In a typical household people are running around doing different things, popping in and out, running errands and generally going about their lives. Yet a holiday puts all the daily routines on hold, people are thrown together for long periods of time and it can become frantic. I have been there, my husband gets anxious on holiday, he doesn’t like to be away from home for long periods. We used to have conflict but now he prefers to stay in the uK. that’s ok, we’re home all year round together and probably spend more time together than most married couples. so it’s literally a break when we’re away. And absence definitely makes the heart grow fonder. Whatever your plans are, enjoy this month’s magazine filled as always with fabulous news and business round up. happy 60th birthday to Comcab, what an amazing achievement. this year, Liverpool’s oldest black cab company turns 60 General Manager Karen Long reflects on how the business has changed.
“When the company celebrated its 25th birthday”, says Karen, “they held a dinner dance. The duties of the chairman, it was said in a speech, were to keep the bank manager sweet”. Times have changed. Now, ComCab Liverpool finds it as important to keep both its customers and its drivers as sweet as the bank manager. Karen joined the company 25 years ago as an office junior. She’s run it as General Manager since 2010 and is supported with operations, fleet, sales, marketing and account management with a predominately female management team which could be considered unusual in the Taxi trade. “There is definitely a sense of being a woman led office we have a mutually supportive atmosphere and work very collaboratively we all take credit

when things go right and equally take responsibility when things don’t quite go to plan”. “You have to create a positive atmosphere and a happy ship, this for me is the most conducive atmosphere to grow the business for our customers and drivers” There are customers who’ve used ComCab for some 40 years. “We’ve also been quite determined to keep the service local, we know we provide jobs for local people and we stick together, employing local people, using local suppliers so there is a lot of social value. “Loyalty is a very Liverpool thing”. Technology has become an important part of how ComCab Liverpool has evolved. Most ComCab Taxis take contactless
payments and the introduction three years ago of a free taxi app, offering tracking services was made available giving another booking platform offering accountability within the Liverpool Black Cab trade that ComCab have offered for 60 years. Safety and security has always been paramount in our business decisions. Booking a Black Cab through ComCab either through the App or via our call centre gives real accountability, recourse when things go right or wrong for a passenger; we have an office in the City, the ability to track and trace, we often get people back with their belongings” As the firm celebrates its 60th birthday, with a record turnover and more drivers on the books than ever before, the future is looking bright.
