february ISSUE 94 A note from our editor...

Hello

lovely Lifestyle readers!

I love this month. And while I can be accused of saying this every month, I do love February a little more than the rest. Why? Because it’s my birthday, my anniversary and Valentine’s Day, so lots and lots to celebrate, and tons of cake to be consumed. What’s not to smile about? Let the cheesy romance reign for the whole month! I read recently about the importance of counting your blessings. This I try to do all the time, never more so when negative things happen, when things are not quite going my way or even when I’m having trouble sleeping while trying to decide which school choices to put down for my twins. Counting blessings isn’t about being smug, or lording what you have over the next person, it’s about appreciating what you have, even the little things. And for me a large part of appreciating what I have is finding pretty much any excuse to celebrate and make a fuss of my little family, whom I love to hang around with. So for the whole month kitsch paper hearts will adorn the house, we will celebrate Valentine’s, my birthday, our wedding anniversary and anything and everything that comes up in-between. So when this Valentine’s Day comes around, celebrate all the people that you love not just those you swoon over. Celebrate your sister, brother, mum and dad, even the cat, knock on the door of the lonely old person at the end of the street and make them a cup of tea. Make this one day about showing the love to everyone – yes it’s cheesy, yes it’s a cliché, but my inner hopeless romantic just can’t see it any other way. Happy Valentine’s

PETER ANDRE see the familiar face in the crowd that come back event after event, year after year. What more can you ask as a musician than fans who love what you do?

P

eter Andre has been making hearts beat that little bit faster for 20 years, and over that time,

DO YOU LIKE TO TOUR? Touring is what it’s all about for me. I have always been lucky enough to have a fiercely loyal fan base and to be honest, they are what have kept me going over the years when sometimes I lost my drive a bit. They never let me down and I’m always so happy to

10

THIS TOUR IS A LITTLE DIFFERENT AS IT CONTAINS SWING MUSIC This tour and album have been a different but exciting directly for me. I love the music from the swing era and have since I was a kid. Being able to sing those songs is a bit of a tribute from me to them - and the response I’ve had so far has been fantastic. Trying to do Frank Sinatra in my own way was tough, but I hope I do it justice. WHAT’S IT LIKE BEING ON THE ROAD NOW YOU HAVE A YOUNG FAMILY, DO THEY JOIN YOU? I’m not as young as I used to be so touring the UK, whilst being a dad of wonderful kids is quite frankly exhausting! The baby (Amelia) is obviously on her feet now so we are running after her constantly and Princess and Junior keep me on my toes too but I wouldn’t have it any other way. Family comes first, no matter what. I would do anything for them. I like it when they come to shows and watch, but there’s never really any time off to relax. I sing, I eat and then I’m back to being a dad - just like any other working parent. Time off, what’s that again?! I KNOW YOU HAVE PERFORMED IN LIVERPOOL BEFORE – ARE YOU LOOKING FORWARD TO RETURNING? Liverpool has to be one of my favourite places when

I do tours. This city is full of culture and life. It’s music history is second to none, so when I come here to sing – I can’t help but think of all the greats that begun in Liverpool and were born here and I try and soak up a bit of their spirit to inspire me. Liverpool fans have got to be amongst the most fun-loving and happy people I’ve ever met too – I guess they all just love living in Liverpool!’

joe mcelderry X Factor winner Joe McElderry is the latest star to don the famous colourful coat when he stars in Joseph and the Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat at St Helens Theatre Royal from Feb 23 – 27. Joe was just 18 when he won the sixth series of The X Factor in 2009 and immediately went straight to number one on the UK Singles Charts with his debut single The Climb. He has since gone on to have three top ten albums, as well as notching up two more reality TV show victories, winning ITV’s Pop Star to Opera Star and Channel 4’s The Jump. Our editor Joy Lewis interviewed Joe on getting the part and trying to put his own spin on such a well known show. Huge congratulations on gaining this amazing role in Joseph and his Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat - how does it feel to be playing the lead in the U.K's longest running musical? I am very excited right now as Joseph is such an iconic role. It’s a lot to take in as it’s such a huge role so the pressure is on. The musical played a huge part in my childhood so it is really nice to actually be in it! When you think of all the other house hold name stars who have been in the role in the past - from Donny Osmand to Jason Donovan and Philip Schofield, that's, these people are still in the public eye, some 20 years later - this must be so exciting for you? How does it feel? Does it blow your mind? There has been some really famous names playing the role of Joseph and it has been a real career defining moment for many people including Jason Donovan and Philip Schofield and has propelled them to stardom so I am totally honoured to be playing Joseph, it’s such an endearing role and means so much to many.

14

Do you think about those who have played the leads for this part in the past - or are you just bringing your own personality to the role? I really want to put my own spin on it. I am trying

not to have too many preconceived ideas and just put my own interpretation into it. For this reason, I haven’t watched the previous versions of Joseph but I have been listening to all the cast recordings. How are the rehearsals going? It’s the second day (Tuesday) and it’s going really well. It’s very full on but that is a blessing in disguise as you just have to get on with it and throw yourself into it. Do you know how long you will be part of the show yet? I will be playing Joseph until July this year.

get lots of families and adults who came to see it as children who are now bringing their children because they loved it so much! Your other job is a chart topping pop star, are you still going to carry on with this or is the theatre the future for you? And if you are carrying on being a pop star are you working on your next release? and if so what can you tell me about it? Of course yes, I am concentrating on Joseph for now but I’ll be carrying on my music. I like to have a variety of things planned so I will never get bored!

The cast list is amazing - are you all enjoying working together? We are having lots of fun and everyone is extremely talented so it’s great to be surrounded by such a powerful team of performers and I am sure that will come across to the audience.

To buy tickets visit www.atgtickets.com/shows/ joseph-and-the-amazingtechnicolor-dreamcoat-tickets

The musical in the past has had children on the stage singing too - are you using different local school choirs for this? We are using local school choirs in each town we go to. It’s really nice to involve local children from each place and give them a chance to FOR A LEVEL PROGRESS perform in a West End show.

THE TOP SIXTH FORM COLLEGE IN THE COUNTRY

This musical is so well known, with many of the audience knowing the words to all the songs, and they sing along - is that intimidating or does it just add to the performance for you? I’ve heard that people in the audience sing along to the numbers in the show and I am looking forward to that! For those who are new to this show, what can you tell them about the production? As well as being fun and have lots of iconic uptempo songs, Jospeh has a great story with powerful lessons to be learned.

16

Who is this show for - who should come along and enjoy it? The show appeals to all age groups as it has something for everyone, spanning lots of generations. You

group of British boys crash land and subsequently find themselves stuck on an uninhabited island, with not a single adult among them. What starts as a classic desert island adventure quickly descends into a struggle for survival in a darkly sinister world of superstition and immorality. They try to govern themselves, but the results are disastrous, proving that we are all only a few steps away from our base instincts, no matter how firmly entrenched on modern society we are. The story clearly demonstrates the stances on the already controversial subjects of human nature and individual welfare versus the common good.

Dr. Martens SS16 range launches in store

this February – here’s our top picks to take on the transition into next season. For SS16, Dr. Martens has tapped into its unrivalled cultural relevance once again by taking inspiration from one of the most peculiar, the most extravagant and also one of the most distinct youth cultures who wore Dr. Martens – Psychobilly. Psychobilly blends punk, rock and rockabilly often mixed with imagery lifted from horror and sci-fi films. As a result, slime and b-movie horror movie type graphics often feature in both band artworks and gig posters. Dr. Martens 22

have interpreted this onto the iconic 1460 8-eye boot in a monotone palette. D’Antonio was an Italian Renaissance painter born in the 15th Century. His painting the Triumph of Camillus depicts how the Roman Senate honours the hero Camillus with a parade through Rome. Taking inspiration from this painting, the Di Antonio collection consists of a 3 option pack of the Pascal 8 eye boot, a 1461 shoe and then rounded off with an 11” satchel to complete the offer. It’s not just what you wear, but what you are made of........ FABRIC STYLIST NATALIE MORRIS JOINS THE LIFESTYLE TEAM TO SHOW YOU WHICH TEXTILES WORK BEST FOR YOU THIS WINTER

F

ebruary is a bit of what you fancy, the month of love and butterfly’s. I made it my personal mission to match up a unique fabric, a texture or a technique to convey valentines whilst trying to avoid the use of love hearts which are the main symbol associated with this time. Smocking is an embroidery decoration created by gathering a section of the material into tight pleats and holding them together with parallel stitches in an ornamental pattern. Smocking appealed to me as a desirable exaggerated technique with endless experimenting possibilities. It enables you to alter the size of each space marking and exploring with different patterns as well as creating intense stretch, shrinking fabric by 3 times its original size. Due to smocking’s thickness and flexibility it invents romantically unique silhouettes around the body with no rules or restrictions to placement or size. Smocking is commonly used on the cuffs, bodices and necklines. The smaller the smocking, the tighter the stretch which could essentially synch in body parts acting as a belt. However the bigger the smocking, the more of a bulky and exaggerated look it will convey, thus representing a fashion statement. My feelings for relating smocking to a lustful and passionate concept is that as the fabric gathers beautifully within layers using hand crafted techniques creating

24

shapes, texture and intensity as the fabric shrinks it becomes a very high quality personal piece of art. Using love, protection and happiness as the bonds that hold two people together. Love is a natural source, a work in progress. Just like stitching; it takes time, patience and effort to which each stitch and gather acts to strengthen those before it. Like love; smocking requires numerous connection points only created by marrying two equals together in a mutual link of half’s. Each intertwined in an ordered sequence seaming to create order out of chaos. As is true with those wishing to convey their affections to others around the time surrounding valentines, attention to detail using careful but deliberate detail can create something that captures the hearts and mind of others through the love of fashion and needlework.

IF YOU WANT TO GET FIT ALL YOU NEED IS A

SPARE CAR TYRE!

A TEAM OF KWIK FIT TECHNICIANS ARE TRIALLING A FITNESS SCHEME WHICH WILL QUITE LITERALLY HELP PEOPLE LOSE THEIR SPARE TYRES.

30

The Kwik Fit crew has teamed up with a personal trainer to devise a system – Fit Kwik – using only car and van tyres. The free 30-minute sessions will include tyre flips, lifts and throws, during which participants should burn up to 1,200 calories. Three Kwik Fit staff members Louis Lecointe (corr) and Paul Hernandez, both 31 and from London, and 29-yearold Monuf Abdul from Stevenage, even agreed to strip off to promote the new scheme in a photo session with celebrity photographer Jim Marks. Paul Boulton, Retail Sales & Operations Director of Kwik Fit said: “We think everyone is exhausted by faddy diet plans and complicated exercise regimes. “We want to put the fun back into fitness for the everyday person with a no-nonsense class that doesn’t take itself too seriously. Our stripped down class consists of just you and a few tyres in one of our centre car parks. The trial of our new ‘Fit Kwik’ class this January is open to anyone who wants to shift that post-Christmas spare tyre – with our spare tyres.”

Personal Trainer Mikah Simpson said: “There’s no doubt tyres are a brilliant foundation to a work out – not only for lifting, but on the floor during cardio exercises. “The most important thing when getting fit is to simply get started and do something you enjoy. This promises to create a fun atmosphere and leave participants feeling that they’ve done something worthwhile.” For those who can’t make it down to the fitness classes, Kwik Fit have also released a ‘Fit Kwik’ fitness plan and a series of instructional videos for people to try at home. All you need is a spare car tyre. If you want to take part visit : www.kwikfit.com/ fitkwik and follow the videos for spare tyre fitness.

amanda holden signs for everton in the community

TV favourite Amanda Holden has been appointed an honorary patron of her football team’s charity, Everton in the Community. The Britain’s Got Talent judge has accepted an ambassadorial role for the official charity of Everton Football Club, which is recognised as one of the UK’s leading sporting charities and regularly acknowledged on both a national and international stage for addressing a range of issues, including dementia – a topic very close to Amanda’s heart. During a recent visit to Liverpool for Britain’s Got Talent auditions Amanda took time out of her busy filming schedule to visit Goodison and find out more about the charity’s pioneering ‘Pass on the Memories’ programme which supports people living with dementia and their carers. Amanda’s maternal grandfather, whom she credits for her love of music, sadly lost his battle with dementia in 2007 and since then she has publically campaigned to boost volunteering, education and support for the growing number of people with the condition. During her time at the home of the Blues, Amanda took part in a series of memory quizzes alongside some of the people who attend the programme and put her general knowledge on the 50s and 60s to the test before meeting delivery staff and finding out more about ‘Pass on the Memories’ and the people it supports. Delivered in partnership with Mersey Care NHS Trust, ‘Pass on the Memories’ uses a range of interventions, including sporting reminiscence workshops and custom-made life story memory books, to help people share important memories and create new ones. Evertonian Holden said: “I’m so proud to take on a 34

role as patron for Everton in the Community which is such a special charity; changing and saving the lives of people all across Merseyside every day. It’s an incredible charity. Everton is my club and there’s an ‘Everton way’ and Everton in the Community embodies the values of Evertonians.” “The ‘Pass on the Memories’ programme is so personal to me because my own grandfather had dementia and we had to watch him slowly turn into a different person and then sadly slip away. This programme gives people something to look forward to and also supports loved ones who stay strong by their side and help them live day to day.You are never alone when you are a part of Everton in the Community, it very much feels like a family and you are always made to feel welcome.” The popular actress and presenter has taken up her role at Everton in the Community with immediate effect and will use her profile to promote all of the good work the charity undertakes to tackle a host of social issues including health, employability, crime, education, poverty, youth justice and disability. Denise Barrett-Baxendale, Everton in the Community CEO, added: “We are delighted that Amanda has joined us on the board at Everton in the Community and we look forward to working closely together to raise the profile of our fantastic charity nationally as well as enhancing the work that is done by the charity each and every day.” Established in 1988, Everton in the Community is an award-winning charity which delivers over 60 programmes to support the most vulnerable and underprivileged people in Merseyside.

hy is it we are more attracted to certain types of people than others? Why is it we feel comfortable with certain type of people than others?. Why don’t we gel with some people within minutes or seconds of meeting them?. Why do opposites attract?. How come we marry someone fascinating to us then spend years attempting to change them to be more like us?. It’s a mystery isn’t it? No it really isn’t. As far back as (c. 460 – c. 370 BC) The Greek physician Hippocrates knew that there were Four Temperaments, four differing personality types/styles. He determined that they fell into these four key styles Melancholic, Phlegmatic, Sanguine and Choleric or Earth, Water, Air and Fire. All with their strengths and the weakness. I attended a conference some 20 years ago where the speaker used colours to explain these different styles Melancholic = Blue, Phlegmatic = Green, Sanguine = Yellow and Choleric Red Reds and Yellows are outgoing and Blues and Greens are more reserved, yellow and green are people people and reds and blues are task type people. When we truly understand our style and the people around us, family, friends, work colleagues, associates our expectations completely change, our communication can be greatly enhanced and our close relationships will flourish. This is not to put people into boxes and use their style against them, it is to better understand this, “no one does anything to you, they do everything because of them! A friend of mine thought that their young 36

daughter had been sent by a higher power purely to test them, every night at bedtime they said to their daughter “it’s bed time.” A very reasonable statement you would think, however all hell would break out. This was every single night. They asked for my help to see if I could offer any advice/support anything really. It became apparent spending some time with them they had a very RED style daughter. So when they said to her its bedtime, what she heard was “do you want a fight? Reds like to be in control. I asked them to try a different tack for a couple of days, I told them to tell their daughter that she could decide what time bedtime was, it was either 8pm or 8.15pm and she could decide. The turnaround was remarkable, every night she decided and made the decision, it wasn’t without its occasional challenge, but the drama of their evenings completely changed. They changed the language they used to suit their beautiful daughters style. They believed it was a miracle or magic the results were that positive. I let them know it’s about truly understanding how people tick and the language different colours best respond to. Remember, “no one does anything to you, they do everything because of them! Next month we will look at how communicate with the different colours. If you would like to find out more please contact darren@dasala.co.uk or follow me on twitter @dasaladarren

Distance Inbetween

he Coral

Hello James, James, Ian, Nick, Paul Duffy and Paul Molloy, it's been 5 years since you last released an album of original material, why the long hiatus and what have you been up to? We decided to take some time out after finishing the tour cycle from Butterfly House. The original idea had been to record an album straight from being on the road, but it didn't happen. Since we'd been recording/rehearsing/touring from about 2000 onwards, we decided to call it a day for a while, work on some other projects. There was a bit of burnout.

As a band you have received much critical acclaim for so much of your music - do you think the establishment and radio have given you enough recognition to match your success? We've had some good radio play in the past- in The Morning was the most played radio song in the year it came out, I think. I always expect and want the radio to get behind us more, though. But most of the stations are playlist based, so there's not much you can do in that respect.

Is the album along the same style as your past music or are you exploring new sound now? There's definitely new avenues on Distance Inbetween that we haven't necessarily gone down before, some of it has a few more synths in the backing tracks, and maybe a little less guitar. But there are familiar things too. At the end of it all we always try and condense things and strange ideas into a song that you can hum.

I read that you recorded "Distance Inbetween" in the famous Parr Street Studios what was it like to record there where so many famous albums have been created? Parr St is always good to record in. In the past few years it's had a complete refurbishment and an original Neve desk installed. I've been recording there since I was about eighteen so it feels quite homely to go in there now.

COMING SOON TO ODEON Liverpool ONE: - THE WITCH In this exquisitely made and terrifying new horror film, the age-old concepts of witchcraft, black magic and possession are innovatively brought together to tell the intimate and riveting story of one family’s frightful unraveling in the New England wilderness circa 1630. New England, 1630. Upon threat of banishment by the church, an English farmer leaves his colonial plantation, relocating his wife and five children to a remote plot of land on the edge of an ominous forest — within which lurks an unknown evil. Strange and unsettling things begin to happen almost immediately — animals turn malevolent, crops fail, and one child disappears as another becomes seemingly possessed by an evil spirit. With suspicion and paranoia mounting, family members accuse teenage daughter Thomasin of witchcraft, charges she adamantly denies. As circumstances grow more treacherous, each family member's faith, loyalty and love become tested in shocking and unforgettable ways. Writer/director Robert Eggers’ debut feature, which premiered to great acclaim at the 2015 Sundance Film Festival — winning the Best Director Prize in the U.S. Narrative Competition — painstakingly recreates a God-fearing New England decades before the 1692 Salem witch trials, in which religious convictions tragically turned to mass hysteria. Told through the eyes of the adolescent Thomasin — in a star-making turn by newcomer Anya Taylor-Joy — and supported by mesmerizing camera work and a powerful musical score, THE WITCH is a chilling and groundbreaking new take on the genre. THE WITCH is released 11/03/16 at ODEON Liverpool ONE. 42

Lifestyle’s music columnist Martin Quirk

We Can Be Heroes s rock gods go, Bowie and Lemmy, as David Jones and Ian Kilminster preferred to be known, couldn’t be more different in how they went about being one. If Lemmy was resolutely ‘the Ace of Spades’, the bourbon-swilling, hard-living, tankdriving patron of lap dancing bars right up until the very end, albeit one with a keen appetite for literature and playing fruit machines, then Bowie was a fully loaded six deck card shoe of musical and inspirational genius who made even his own death into a work of performance art. Each living legend, understandably, chose to cope with the terrifying and potentially souldestroying devastation of terminal cancer in the best way that they each knew how; Lemmy by just being Lemmy and Bowie by being industrious and creative. Both men transcended the art of music very early in their journeys due to the sheer force of their incredible personalities, which is a minimum requirement if you are going to become a rock god. Although, as much as I love Lemmy, I personally think that David Bowie was a so much more than a mere rock god. To me and many others he was a great artist, pure and simple, on a par with the likes of Picasso or Mozart, and also, it has to be said, a modern day prophet who lead the way and made it possible for millions of people to be the person that they really needed to be or order for them to have any chance of finding true peace or happiness in life. However, the most important quality which both great men had in common is something that, ultimately, those of us without the talent, the opportunity or the ‘God-given ass’ to be a rock god can also strive for. Both men were kind, caring, and compassionate human beings who loved and cherished their families and their friends and placed infinitely more importance on them and those personal values than they ever did on any of their creative achievements, professional success or, needless to say, upon being a rock god. 44

If you want to step back in time, then a day trip to Beamish is worth a visit. The last time I went was 20 years ago when my husband took us on our first date. Has it changed?

B

by Amanda Moss

eamish is a world famous open air museum set in acres of land in the heart of County Durham This enthralling site, which encompasses a 1900s town, 1940s farm, 1900s pit village and colliery and Pockerley Old Hall and house set in the 1820s. It’s an absolutely incredible experience by seeing how families lived and worked in the years leading up to the first World War and it’s impossible tp forget you’re living in the 21st century as once you’re through the doors of Beamish and past the obligatory gift shop, you can’t purchase anything that wasn’t available in that era. For example the bakery has bread using recipes and ovens from the 1900s, the fish and chip shop was my favourite, using old coal ovens but not a bottle of ketchup in sight. Gorgeous crispy chips served in newspaper with salt and vinegar only, when I asked for sauce I was told I was 30 years too early for it! The staff working the museum are dressed in traditional costume and it took a whole day to get round all the sites, I particularly loved looking around the Edwardian houses, all the furniture looked untouched from a bygone era. It was fascinating. While the car journey took just over three hours, the drive itself from Liverpool up the M6 and across the Cumbrian countryside was itself a pleasure. We swapped the car for the Beamish Tramway which recreates the experience and atmosphere of the public transport operation of an earlier generation. Beamish is charming, educational and intriguing. There was something to keep adults and children (aged from two to teens) entertained throughout the day and I was delighted to experience a day that was as exciting as my first date with my husband. It hasn’t changed a bit, unlike my 48 husband’s hairline.

DIM SUM ETIQUETTE for chinese new year 2016 C

hopsticks at the ready! Chinese New Year is on 8 February, and 2016 is the year of the Red Monkey. Liverpool city centre is home to the oldest Chinese communities in Europe, and the whole city gets involved in celebrating this fantastic cultural heritage. What better to spend this holiday than eating Dim Sum? But hang on – there are a few rules that need to be met in order to enjoy the dish the traditional way without causing offence.

WHAT TO DO

Do eat each dim sum dumpling in one go to get the full flavour of the components in your mouth. It is also less messy! Do drink tea with dim sum and never order other hot drinks such as coffee as it can overpower the taste of the dim sum. Tea is the most important factor when eating dim sum, and we recommend ordering Jasmine or Chrysanthemum tea. It is best to drink the tea with fried or baked dim sum to wash it down and cleanse the digestion system of the oils.

Do always pour others tea before your own as this is tradition in China. Do tap your index finger on the table to thank the person pouring the tea. This is a recognised symbol of “bowing” in China and was invented by an emperor. Do order a lot of different dishes and share between the table for a variety of flavours. When eating dim sum order rice as it is a good way to cleanse your palate.

WHAT NOT TO DO

Don’t use your own chopsticks to serve yourself from the communal bowls. Don’t save dessert until last. It is acceptable to request a dessert dish in the middle of the meal such as Egg Custard Tarts. As the tea freshens your palate diners can mix sweet and savoury dishes.

54

Don’t eat dim sum cold, it needs to be eaten hot. It should not be left to cool and it should be eaten within 15 minutes of being served. Start with fried dim sum then steamed as the fried dim sum cools quicker. Royal China serves dim sum in steam baskets with a lid to preserve the temperature.

Yolanda Brown, the double MOBO awardwinning saxophonist and Jazz Master, is embarking on a nationwide tour, “Reggae Love Songs.” On March 8th, the audience at St George’s Hall will be taken on an infectious journey of Reggae rhythms from the Caribbean. Our editor Joy Lewis chatted with Yolanda about touring, Reggae music and tips for future budding musicians. YOUR TOUR IS ABOUT TO START AGAIN, ARE YOU LOOKING FORWARD TO BEING BACK ON THE ROAD? Yes! I love being on the road and playing concerts. We get to see some wonderful cities and meet new people. On stage, It’s exciting that even though we have a set list and plan, the show can take it’s own direction based on the audience and feel of the venue, even from the direction of a solo. I love playing live! WHAT CAN AUDIENCES EXPECT WHEN THEY COME TO YOUR SHOW, "REGGAE LOVE SONGS" An evening of exciting music based in Reggae, Jazz and Soul. You will hear original and well known love songs all re-arranged with a unique twist as well as high energy and interactive performance! I love having the audience involved on the night, come and enjoy a journey of music. ARE YOU LOOKING FORWARD TO PERFORMING IN THE MAGNIFICENT LIVERPOOL'S ST GEORGE'S HALL? HAVE YOU PERFORMED IN LIVERPOOL BEFORE? I am really looking forward to playing at St. George’s Hall. The venue looks amazing and I am looking forward to hearing my saxophone in the acoustics! I have played in Liverpool a few times in my early career and also supported the Temptations in this wonderful city also. I am 56

looking forward to coming back and headlining my own concert. CAN YOU TELL ME THE STORY OF WHO OR WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO BECOME A JAZZ SAXOPHONIST? At 13 I just wanted to experience a wind instrument after playing the piano and drums from a very early age. I just loved how the instrument sounded and how free I felt playing it. I then realized that I was improvising and playing my take on Jazz but didn’t think about playing the saxophone as a career until after University. Forming a band allowed me to write and play my own music and I have not looked back! I really enjoy my job and playing this wonderful style of music. AS A VERY SUCCESSFUL, TWO TIMES WINNER OF A MOBO AWARD, WHAT ADVICE ONE PIECE OF ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO BUDDING MUSICIANS LOOKING TO BREAK INTO THE INDUSTRY? I would say keep playing and writing music. Perform and record as much as possible and use the strength of the Internet and social networks to build an audience and following. Gone are the days where you have to look for a record label - to be unique is everything.

the grove beer tap

& grill

Despite an extensive list of craft beers and good food at the top of the menu, Grove Beer Tap & Grill isn’t just for beer enthusiasts. Located on Seel Street, one of Liverpool’s most thriving streets for bars and restaurants, it’s a must-visit on any pub crawl in this area. There’s a large beer garden at the front of the bar – perfect for drinks on summer evenings, not this time of year – and 58

it has a sleek, eye-catching interior that make it an easy place to while away the time with friends. If you’re feeling peckish, but not hungry enough for a full meal, choose a light bite and matching beer for around £6-8. Everything on the menu is cooked from scratch and most items on the menu cost between £4 and £8. It’s slightly tucked away, but just walk down Fleet St and do a left after Concert Square then look out for Grove Beer Tap & Grill on your right-hand side. barry cochrane - bbc home away from home

For hair salon owner Barry Cochrane, home is a luxury apartment in the Albert Dock Colonnades with a white Porsche parked outside. But since the owner of Hairlucinations in Bootle Strand gave up his riverfront view and glossy magazine decor to take part in a BBC 1 TV swap experiment things have changed in his life and his business. “My apartment had been in a few magazines and I think the programme makers wanted to do something in Liverpool, searched online and found me,” he says. “The nature of the business I’ve created is very much a fun thing, that’s the way I am and the way I run things, so that’s why in the end it appealed.” The programme meant Barry exchanging his immaculate city centre apartment for a terraced house in a Bohemian district of Bristol. Yet since the show at the end of last year business has seen a turn in international clientele and the phone hasn’t stopped ringing with offers of more TV work. Barry commented “It’s been surreal we have for example had new customers from Ireland who loved one of the hair styles I was working on when filming the show now they are coming over every 6 weeks from Ireland as new clients. As for the TV offers I am flattered and will see what the year brings for me.”

CRAIG PHILLIPS DIY Hello Lifestyle Readers, I hope everyone is getting into the swing of 2016 and your resolutions are still holding strong! Over the winter, I’ve had the opportunity to indulge in one of my favourite pastimes – skiing. I travelled over to Morzine with my girlfriend and friends and enjoyed a fantastic couple of weeks in the Alps. Though the weather wasn’t as cold as usual, I always made sure to keep wrapped up warm with Heat Holders’ fantastic range of thermal clothing! As I often do, I had the opportunity to attend another fantastic awards evening – the Leicester Mercury Sports Awards at the King Power Stadium. I always enjoy going to events like this and it’s a wonderful privilege to be asked to present awards to such inspirational people. Later in the month I had the opportunity to visit my good friend Ian Hodgkinson’s bricklaying academy on behalf of Silverline Tools. It’s a fantastic centre and teaching this valuable trade is something I feel very passionate about. I had the opportunity to see the Academy Students doing some practical work, and the local press were in attendance along with college media, the College CEO and other principals. Other than that, it’s just been the usual for me which is working with paint-spraying specialists Wagner on Ideal World, as well as continuing to film some exclusive videos for online tile retailer, Tile Mountain which should be coming out in the near future. That’s about it from me this month my friends. As always I’ve included my monthly DIY tip for you to try your hand at!

All the best,

Craig.

Fitting self closures to front and internal doors. • • • • • • •

Tools and materials 18v auto shift drill Self closure kit Three millimetre drill piece Eight screws Hammer Twenty two millimetre spade piece

Self closures in a door are not something you often see or ever think about but they do serve a very important purpose (and can and have saved lives). In the unlikely event of a fire starting in a particular room, whenever the doors are closed it is proven fact they help contain the fire within the one room giving you more time to escape. Hold one side of the self closure to the inner closing edge of the door where required. Using an 18v auto shift drill, burrow out a hole using a 22 millimetre spade piece. Whilst you are drilling, move the drill slowly in and out removing all excess wood chippings. Insert the barrel into the hole until it can’t go any further. Rill four pilot holes then screw the plate of the barrel to the edge of the door. Using a hammer, pull the adjoining plate stretching out the spring loaded chain to its fullest degree. Slide your safety plate in position to hold the spring then place the adjoining plate to the inner edge of your doorframe. Again drill four more pilot holes with a three millimetres drill bit and drive in four times two inch screws. Remove the safety plate and the door now should automatically slowly spring shut.

Hello February! As we’re sinking deeper into winter there’s nothing more I love than cosying up on the couch with my family. It has always been my top priority to spend time with them. It’s the best feeling in the world and definitely my proudest achievement above everything else. It’s important to listen to them and to be there for them and I chose staying in with them over going out any night of the week. However in my line of business the invitations continue to roll out. There is always a launch party, press conference or party invite to respond to. A new set of invites are landing in my inbox this year with requests to give talks at universities and networking luncheons about my business. With a two year old I am not quite ready to leave at playgroup, I ensure she is welcome at all the events I attend, emailing in advance to ensure she is welcome. This has been the same protocol with all my kids, from breastfeeding them in public to chaperoning them to all my meetings, my children have always been hand in hand with my business and it rarely has been a problem. Though at a recent networking breakfast in which Ezme had been rsvp’d and her attendance confirmed by the event organisers. She sat quietly munching on croissants and did not murmur when people led their presentation speeches. Yet on the way out when I left a woman turned to me and said, “Next time don’t bring her with.” I was angered, not least because Ezme had not been disruptive but the fact that this comment had been made by a woman.

Now I have never been a fan of “women in business” events, I think they are not very forward thinking, business is for everyone and people should not have a label attached to it. I also think it’s derogatory to women, as if we aren’t capable of running businesses so we need extra support. Codswallop. But it got me thinking how these “women in business” are supposed to support and empower others yet this remark made to me was degrading, as if I cannot be expected to cope with a child and work at the same time.

amanda@amandamosspr.uk www.amandamosspr.uk A few years ago I was labelled unprofessional by a fashion boutique owner (where are they now?) when I brought my children to a meeting in a coffee shop. They sat drinking hot chocolates at another table while we conducted a meeting, later she emailed me to tell me how unprofessional I was to bring my children. It is worth noting that I have never had this issue with men and how sad is it that women feel the need to belittle other women rather than show support. I am an excellent multitasker, it really doesn’t take much to raise children and run a business, millions of women do it everyday and have done for years. My children are there to be seen and heard, they are there to accompany me to networking meetings and business events and because of this they are business savvy at a young age. They are inquisitive about my work and keen to learn, they have an excellent work ethic already and don’t need to be told to do their homework or revise for a test. They are aware of self employment, something I knew nothing about until my mid-30s. No doubt you will bump into one or two or three or four of them at the up and coming Liverpool Lifestyle Awards, an event I am incredibly proud of as I have the opportunity showcase such a hub of independent business talent in our region. So while I enjoy cuddling up to my children on the sofa , I will sit with my laptop and check my emails, write a feature and plan my next business move. Children are very much a part of my lifestyle, which just so happens to be the name of my business. I do exactly what it says on the tin, well…. front cover. My message to you this month is not to stay stylish, but stay strong and independent. Amanda x
