COLON HYDROTHERAPY CENTRE : MEET MARCUS

H

ello, my name is Marcus Cornelius-White, and I am pleased to announce the arrival of my Colon Hydrotherapy Centre here in Liverpool. I want to give you a brief overview of the services that I offer at the Centre, as well as the many benefits that having a colonic brings. Having spent the past decade establishing a prestigious Colon Hydrotherapy Centre in Sydney, Australia, I am finally bringing my world class services home to Merseyside. I strongly believe that we often neglect the inside of our body, when it should in fact be our priority. I’ve recently opened my Colon Hydrotherapy Centre in the heart of Liverpool’s Baltic Triangle and I have 3 qualifications in Colonic Irrigation. I am also qualified in massage, P.T. and nutrition. My main focus and passion, however is Colonics, as I realise that a healthy inside equals a healthier outside. Colon Hydrotherapy is a hidden gem of a treatment in that it rehabilitates and rejuvenates the body, removing excess waste matter, leaving you feeling happier and healthier. Colonic irrigation is not some new fangled fad; it dates back to Egyptian times. They believed that decay started in the inside and you if you look at what you eat everyday to what comes out then, you will see it does not equate. The large intestine holds between 5 to 11 kgs and if blocked or ‘full’, it can affect the way you feel , think and act: the release of the impacted matter can also help lead to a more functional and regular system. So if you want to make big changes to your health and wellbeing, act now! This is your first step to a healthier for you - A healthy body equal a healthier mind.

Your first treatment

Prior to the treatment you will be sent a comprehensive information pack and information 4

for preparation prior to your treatment. We do a 30 minute consultation on nutrition and how the intestines work and what the treatment is about. Once the treatment is completed, you are given a probiotic and electrolyte drink to replenish your good flora and feedback on the results of the treatment.

We check the following:

- How your hydration levels are and if you are absorbing your water properly. - Toxicity levels in the body. - Gas levels. - How you are processing your foods. -Candida levels -Check for worms and parasites. Colonics are an investment in your health and you owe that to yourself to invest in you. In celebrating our new centre, we are running a competition for Nurses, if you know a nurse who has done amazing things for you, family, loved one, then go to our Facebook/ colonhydrotherapycentre for details and get voting. We also love the emergency services; if you work in this industry, then we want to give you 30 % off your first treatment We all love a good deal so check out our specials on the website. Please check out our website for more information, and don’t hesitate to get in touch with any questions you might have. www.colonhdyrotherapycentre.co.uk Marcus Cornelius-White Colon Hydrotherapy Centre

LIVERPOOL NO. 1 CITY FOR ENTREPRENEURS

As if we need another reason to celebrate living in Liverpool, and with the 7th annual Liverpool Lifestyle Awards celebrating small and independent businesses throughout the region, this month, there’s no better time for Liverpool to be named as the UK’s number one entrepreneurial city. The research was derived by Companies House Data by international office space broker, Instant Offices and shows that a staggering 57, 323 people registered new companies in our city in the last 12 months, that’s a 35% growth. Fifteen and a half per cent of people in Liverpool are entrepreneurs compared to just 7.5% in London and 14% in Manchester. These numbers are significantly higher than the UK average at 2%. Self employment isn’t for everyone but well done to those who have decided to become an entrepreneur. Okay so there’s no holiday pay, no time off and there’s plenty of sleepless nights gazing at empty bank accounts. But in the long run it can lead to an amazing life which you control. And who doesn’t want to improve their lifestyle?

Love @ Jane Rapin

CALLING ALL SINGLE MEN!!

This woman knows what you want. You want a cook, a cleaner and someone to caress…. well love@janerapin has the perfect woman waiting for you with her tantalising matchmaking business.

TELL US ABOUT YOUR RELATIONSHIP I have a fantastic marriage filled with love and I feel very blessed to be married to my perfect man. However, it didn’t happen by accident. I looked deep in to my relationship patterns and behaviours to work out what my perfect recipe for real love would be. Once I had this information I was able to finally say YES to the RIGHT man. Mike & I have been together since 2000 and married since 2003, and we’re still like newlyweds. I’d love to fill the world with couples like us – loving, happy, supportive, couples. YOU TRAINED AS A LAWYER, WHAT MADE YOU WANT TO CHANGE CAREERS? When my sister died, I realised my gift was for ‘relationships and people’ and it was an overnight decision to start helping single women make better relationship choices. I knew that if I could help one woman change her destiny by saying no to the wrong man then I would be doing something great in memory of my sister. In truth, employment law and love coaching/ matchmaking aren’t that dissimilar – it’s all just about relationships. Placing the right people together and helping them overcome problems.

10

YOU TRAINED WITH ONE OF THE MOST HIGH PROFILE DATING EXPERTS, THE MILLIONAIRE MATCHMAKER, HOW DID YOU HOOK UP WITH HER? I was very fortunate to train with The Matchmaking Institute, an international body committed to the quality training and support of modern matchmakers. Its founder, Lisa Clampitt, is an exceptional matchmaker. Lisa ensures that when you train with her you receive the very best training from the highest regarded and successful matchmakers in the industry including Rachel Russo and Julie Ferman. As part of the training program I was also able to spend a day with

Patti Stanger and I have to say it was amazing! She shared her experiences, her successes and failures and answered questions honestly and openly. I was able to ask her questions about customer care and how to ensure that my clients received the highest level of service possible. YOU WANT TO TARGET MEN TO SIGN UP, WHY IS THIS I’m certainly looking for men to sign up for matchmaking and in that regard I’m busy building a great database of amazing single women who are looking for a committed relationship. However, men aren’t as open to signing up as women are and so I’m on a mission to let the men of the North West know that I’m looking for them and if they’re looking for real love and lasting happiness, I know I can help them find it. WHAT DO YOU OFFER? Two things, matchmaking and coaching services. The coaching is especially good for people who’ve gone through a divorce or difficult relationships that have left them wary of trusting and loving another person. The matchmaking is a bespoke service where I get to learn about the client, help them to determine what kind of attributes their ideal partner would have and then I do the hard work for them by finding a selection of potential matches. As a client, you know that I will only present you with people who genuinely are a match for you. TELL US WHAT IS SO IMPORTANT ABOUT ROMANCE Romance is an amazing, electrifying connection that makes good relationships amazing, and it’s what keeps love alive in a relationship. An Evening At The Races and Aintree Racecourse will be playing host to DEACON BLUE as the first of a series of live concerts at the racecourse this summer. Featuring a full headlining show, the band will be taking centre stage on Friday, 13th May 2016.

eacon Blue are one of Scotland’s most successful musical exports, having sold over 6 million albums worldwide. Expect to hear many of their timeless hits including “Real Gone Kid”, “Fergus Sings the Blues” and “Dignity” when they rock the racecourse. Here lead singer Ricky Ross gives his thoughts on performing in the North West, horse racing and the bands future. On the bands performances in the North West Ricky said, “We’ve had fantastic nights in both Liverpool and Manchester and Preston. We played all these places at numerous times and Liverpool particularly because you know in 1989 we played at The Royal Court just after the Hillsborough disaster and we’d

lots of letters from people who had relatives at Sheffield, some people who had tickets to the show. At least a couple of them died or were injured and everyone in Liverpool knew someone or had an association with people and perhaps that was the most moving gig we ever done. Emotions within the room were highly charged. People threw flowers on the stage and I think for us it gave us a strong connection with the city, that connection for us is still there now”.

Do you recognise today’s music industry, compared to the one you experienced?

Well I recognise the type of people that are in it! But I think it’s changed enormously, but there’s still things in common to when we first started. At best it’s all about the music, the love of the music, listening to music, making music and enjoying that. There’s a problem that’s hard and one that’s

still very important; teaching people that love music but don’t want to pay for it the way they did before. Young people don’t value owning records and music of any kind. They don’t really value the ownership of that which is something that has changed enormously. We just got to try and work out how we all survive in it but I think the love of music is still there but it’s like every creative industry that’s changed enormously.

So is touring where the money is?

A concert ticket used to be roughly the same price as an album. That equation has gone completely topsy-turvy. Where now the concert ticket is 5 or 6 times at least very often what a record costs.

The whole point with The Jockey Club Live events is a fantastic deal in terms of the ticket price - come and see a headline act like yourselves and have a whole day of racing. Have you ever played a racecourse before, or is this something new for you? We played at Aire, Ascot and we’ve done another one but I can’t remember. We have played them before. We did a radio thing at the Derby one time many many years ago as well and at Epsom. So we have done them but they’re often when the horses aren’t racing so it will be good to be there when the racing is going on.

What can people expect for the Aintree show?

This’ll be the first show we play this year. Well actually, we played at Hogmanay for New Year in Scotland so technically we played on the 1st January. We’ll be making a record hopefully in May so you never know; we might try a new song or something like that! There will be something new.

Do you follow horse racing?

I watch it on telly. I have to be honest I don't know anything about it really and it all seems like such a steep learning curve. I wouldn't know how to put a bet on or one end of the horse from the other but it looks exciting!

14

You say you’ve been recording an album and now you’re gearing up to do some shows, so what is next for Deacon Blue? The release, more touring?

The writing time is the main one for me, Making an album can take a few weeks but actually writing it can take the best part of a year or two so that's been going on and if we get this record made, it should come out in the autumn and we hope to announce some tour dates quite soon for later on in the year.

What’s the biggest achievement to date for the band? I don’t really know. I suppose still making music thirty years on! We’re still doing it and still enjoying it and still connecting with the audience. I think that’s got to be up there with any achievement

Aside from the music, you have your own show on BBC Scotland on the radio and you’ve done some TV work, is this something you would like to expand upon? Or now that Deacon Blue is all full gear, is it solely the band?

I do two radio shows. One every week and one every season then a little break. I love them both very much. They’re really good fun to do and I enjoy doing them and making them my own with really good people, but its too much work, I love having the time to make music.

Just one last cheeky question, have you ever been booked to play a hip-hop club by mistake with them thinking that you’re Rick Ross?

*laughs* no but I’m pretty sure a lot of people think I am Rick Ross. On my Facebook page I get the most bizarre of messages saying, “what’s up bruv”. Like have you looked at my picture? You know this a middle aged white guy from Scotland! But there you go; I suppose not everyone is on the case as they like to think they are. aving headlined the 2015 Glastonbudget Festival last year (the biggest tribute festival of the year), Totally TINA comes to Southport – Theatre on Friday 11th March!

H

Totally TINA is an award-winning tribute to the Queen of Rock and Roll, Tina Turner, being given the “Official UK number one” honour by the Agents Association of Great Britain. Currently touring the UK theatres in a full production version with live band, dancers and our leading lady Justine Riddoch. Rather than being a biography, this show focuses on Tina's live concert career, replicating scenes from various tours over the last 50 years with custom twists and turns created by Justine and her cast.

16

Justine has been singing professionally for over 22 years now and has worked extensively in theatres and on national TV, she is also a much sought after session vocalist for some of the biggest record labels in the UK. In her early career she could be seen treading the familiar cabaret scene as a dynamic vocalist and could boast knowing over 5000 songs, becoming a human juke box at venues. But it was in 2002 that her career would change direction. After winning ITV's “Stars in their Eyes” as Anastacia, her tribute show “Justine is Anastacia” was in great demand and she spent

Having been told on many occasions she really sounded like Tina Turner, Justine set herself the challenge to become the closest copy she could be. But this was going to take some transformation. After hours of scrutinising video footage, watching mannerisms and movements, hand making the all important wig, deciding which costumes to copy, listening to patter and hundreds of versions of the same songs from different decades, the band and Justine created Totally TINA. The boys in the band were informed that girls would have to be a big big part of this and surprisingly no one complained! A troupe of professional dancers were hand-picked, choreography based on Tina's live shows and our own unique creations were created and the whole production was rehearsed, tweaked and rehearsed again. So get ready to Shake your Tailfeathers, with the Queen of Rock and Soul, Live from Nutbush and Simply the Best! TOTALLY TINA SOUTHPORT – Theatre Friday 11th March. L IF E S T Y L E V E R D IC T BLUE PLANET AQUARIUM REVIEW BY AMANDA MOSS PA RKI N G: 5 / 5

Excellent, lots of spaces and free too

RECEPTION: 5/5

Lots of queues, to be expected in the busy half term week, but the staff expert ushered people though with little delay

TOILETS: 5/5

Well signposted and clean

CUSTOMER SERVICE: 4/5 Excellent and friendly

ATTRACTIONS: 5/5

Absolutely brilliant, so much to see, very informative and plenty of room to manoeuvre prams and large groups. The conveyor belt under the giant fish tank is always a huge attraction

RESTAURANT:

We didnt use it as it was so busy so it would be unfair to rate it, but it looked clean and there were plenty of tables

SHOP: 3/5

Not a big fan of shops due to the pester power of kids, but well stocked and good choice of items

VALUE FOR MONEY: 4/5

A family ticket is ÂŁ56 which is competitive, but really a couple of hours is long enough to go round the attractions , unless you sit and eat and then go to the outdoor play area to make more of a day of it.

RAY MEARS’ TALES OF ENDURANCE

R

ay Mears is a happy man, he says, but a very busy one. He has a point. In April, his six-part series on Wild Australia will begin on ITV1. In the summer, a similar series on Wild France will be broadcast. He’s currently writing a book, his eleventh or twelfth (‘I’m afraid I’ve lost count’) about travelling in the Arctic Circle, somewhere he returns to at least once a year. And now he’s embarking on a UK tour, entitled Tales of Endurance, which he will be bringing to Liverpool’s Royal Philharmonic April 2nd. Ray will share stories of survival that have inspired him as well as taking questions from the audience. ‘People always seem to want to know whether what’s shown on television programmes like mine is real. ‘But I like to think the viewer understands that, if you want to really know how to take care of yourself in the wild, I’m the person to talk to.’ Ask him whom he admires in his sphere and David Attenborough’s name quickly emerges. ‘And I loved Gerald Durrell. I’ve never forgotten his series, The Amateur Naturalist. That’s the one programme that used to tempt me back indoors.’

20

In his mid-teens, he read ‘an incredible book’ called The Forest People by Colin Turnbull, his study of the Mbuti pygmies of the then-Belgian

by Richard Barber

Congo in the 50s. Ray’s fate was sealed. ‘I knew then that exploring in its widest sense was what I wanted to do.’ Throughout his 20s, Ray made a living from teaching woodcraft. In time, he was approached by the BBC who were putting together a series called Country Tracks. He was invited to contribute five, three-minute slots about his speciality which quickly became 10, six-minute slots. Six series later, Ray’s secondary career had taken root. ‘In those days, you had to win your spurs to appear on television unlike now when it seems that anyone can get their five minutes of fame and for no very good reason.’ He also has pretty trenchant views when it comes to hot issues like foxhunting. ‘It’s not that I’m anti foxes,’ he says, ‘but by no stretch of the imagination could they be called an endangered species. We waste so much time and effort and money debating the foxhunting issue at a time when other common species – songbirds are a prime example – are under real threat. ‘We need to wise up as a society and stop being so stupidly emotional and try being a little bit more hard-nosed. What we should be looking at is the loss of habitat, the reduction of biodiversity, the reasons behind the decline or loss of certain species.’ He certainly knows what he’s talking about,

its way to what remained of the ray on the campfire. So the food had brought it ashore but it also saved my life. Of course, I couldn’t be sure where it had gone at the time so I didn’t dare venture out of my tent. I just lay very still indeed for the rest of the night.’

having crisscrossed the globe encountering nature red in tooth and claw. Take his close encounter with a five-metre crocodile on the northern coast of Australia in 2000. ‘I’d pitched tent on the beach. I’d speared a stingray that day and I’d wanted to cook it inland in the shade but the TV director persuaded me to do it on the beach because it made better pictures. What I didn’t know at the time was that crocodiles have the most amazing sense of smell and that they have a particular penchant for cooked shark or ray meat.’ A large crocodile had been cruising the beach at the water’s edge all day. ‘As I was later to learn, when a crocodile watches you like that, it’s thinking about eating you. It was nighttime and I was asleep in my tent – no more than a dome made of mosquito netting. I was awoken by a noise and, looking over to my right, there was the crocodile four feet from my head. ‘I put my hand on my machete which I had with me and which I reasoned I could use to hit it on its nose if it attacked although I now know that would have been a complete waste of time. If that crocodile had wanted to eat me, it would have done, no question. ‘Luckily, though, it was just passing through on

Anyone coming to his new show will hear plenty such tales as well as learning how to be safe in the wild, essential for someone contemplating taking a gap year, for example. He has a particular word of advice to those people: don’t stuff your backpacks to the gills with fancy gizmos. ‘My mantra is simple,’ says the eminently practical Ray Mears. ‘Knowledge weighs nothing at all.’ For tickets and further information visit www.liverpoolphil.com

Chevasse Park, Liverpool One www.theclubhouse.com There was only one party invitation everyone wanted recently and that was to the launch party of The Club House. The most eagerly anticipated party of the season, attended by 500 people was like a Who’s Who society guide of the city. Fortunately we included on this exclusive list to experience Liverpool’s latest trendy eatery. The Club House is a bold building, you can’t miss it at the top of Chevasse Park. It wouldn’t look out of place in The Hamptons but thats the whole point. The fairy lit tree lined entrance welcomes you and before you’ve even got through the front door you have to pass the enormous outdoor barbecue and kitchen. Food

4/5

Plenty of traditional dishes to choose from, the home made houmous was too lumpy for my liking but the baked camembert was to die for. I’m a traditional girl, I like my steak and chips so no complaints there.

Ambience

With a huge outdoor area we’re looking forward to some seriously cool summer nights. Inside the entrance reminded doors swing open and you’re to guide you to your seat.

The paint was fresh, the glass chandelier made up of 64 assorted drinks glasses dazzled and the warm atmosphere hugged us like a friend.

5/5

What’s not to love about this place? It ticks every box. There’s no dress code but there's smart cocktail bars to prop up all night, as well as live music every night of the week.

Value

I couldn’t wait to be seated for dinner but not before taking a guided tour of this stunning beach house. Upstairs was plenty of seating but tucked away in one corner was the beer tasting room, where all experts to guide you through the menu and you can even signup for an ale tasting masterclass Downstairs we were escorted to our private dining area which was superb and felt like we were in a beautiful home. The cosy furnishings made me want to spend the night there! 5/5

I expected it to be more costly and was surprised as the prices. Very reasonable indeed

DA Z C R A W F O R D

HAIL HYDRA!

DAZ CRAWFORD, in his rise to fame, has taken himself from Liverpool all the way to Los Angeles. His career started in the RAF which gave him the physical and mental stamina to join the television series The Gladiators, and from there he found his way into Hollywood blockbusters, always playing the tough guy. And now to his latest role in the cult TV show Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Our editor and major super hero fan Joy Lewis, managed to contain herself for long enough to interview TV’s latest super baddie. SO FAR I'VE ONLY SEEN YOU IN ONE EPISODE OF MARVEL'S AGENTS OF S.H.I.E.L.D, SO I KNOW YOU ARE PLAYING A BADDIE - BUT ARE YOU A BADDIE WITH OR WITHOUT SUPER POWERS? Great question, so far I haven’t been shown to have any superpowers, but that’s not to say I don’t have them. Stories throughout the series are constantly updated, for example my character ‘Kebo’ was originally only scripted for one episode, but as we now know that has changed. We will have to wait and see.

WHAT MORE CAN YOU TELL ME ABOUT YOUR PART AS KEBO ON THE SHOW ‘Kebo’ is Ward’s right hand man. Yes you see a bad guy, a villain that isn’t to say that there isn’t more to ‘Kebo’. He, so far, has been sent out by Ward to carry out instructions by him. ‘Kebo’ has his own minions to do some of the dirty work which he oversees and can report back to Ward the outcome of his tasks. Sorry, I am not allowed to say how much of me you will see, but there is more. WHAT'S IT LIKE TO JOIN A T.V SHOW THAT ALREADY HAS SUCH A HUGE CULT FOLLOWING? HAVE PEOPLE STARTED SHOUTING, “HAIL HYDRA” AT YOU YET? (Laughing) It’s great to be on such a popular show, especially as I didn’t realize it was so popular until people started shouting from across the street ‘Hail Hydra’.

YOU HAVE DONE LOTS OF FILMS FOR THE BIG SCREEN TOO, DO YOU PREFER TV OR FILMS? WHICH OF THE TWO GIVES YOU MORE LEEWAY AS AN ACTOR? Yes, I have been lucky enough to have worked on big and small projects. I find them all to be rewarding, so don’t really have a preference. I just appreciate that I can work on both. I haven’t found there to be ‘leeway’ anymore or any less in TV or film. From my experience it would be more based on each individual project. Then it would be down to the timeframe and if there was enough time to give more development to a particular character then I would spend my time doing this. YOUR CAREER HAS BEEN SO VARIED FROM STARTING IN THE RAF TO BEING A GLADIATOR TO THE BIG AND SMALL SCREEN - HOW DID YOU GET INTO ACTING AND IS THIS WHERE YOU WANT TO STAY? After taking redundancy from the R.A.F. I had no clue what I was going to do for work. I had been approached by some photographers to do some modelling work. This was brand new to me and a whole new experience. Whilst modelling I’d booked the ‘Gladiators’, where producer Ken Warwick gave me the name of ‘Diesel’ which I worked on for 2 years before the series ended. I did enjoy the modelling for a while but whilst

doing this I was asked to be an ‘extra’ in a movie. From there I took myself to drama school, eventually ending up in Los Angeles. I’d found something that I loved to do. Not for the money, but for the enjoyment, the satisfaction, the buzz, the warm fuzzy feeling I get when I immerse myself in a character, most of all, to be able to show my emotions and not worry about what others may think. I have found something (by accident) I want to do, and love doing, so yes it is something I will do for as long as I can. YOU HAVE BEEN IN SO MANY FILMS BOTH INDIE AND HUGE BLOCKBUSTERS, WHICH HAS BEEN YOUR FAVOURITE ONE TO DATE? My favourite film that I have worked on, well there are 2. One is Blade 2, we shot that in Prague, a beautiful city, and I was there for 3 months as they say ‘living the dream’. It was an amazing time, working with great people such as Wesley Snipes, Ron Perlman, Chris Christoffersen and amazing director Guillermo del Toro just to name a few. It was an experience I will never forget. The second project was ‘Caffeine’ a comedy movie. For me this was special as it was my first comedic role which I really liked. I also knew it would prove a point to others that looks and physicality should not dictate the roles actors are cast for. ANY PLANS TO TRAVEL BACK TO LIVERPOOL? I don’t go back to Liverpool very often even though I was there 2015. I’ve never forgotten where I came from and do think about my times and experiences growing up there. It keeps me grounded, humbled and very appreciative of where I am in my life now. Maybe one day I’ll book an episode of Brookside or something similar that would bring me back there, you never know?

Watch Daz Crawford as Kebo in Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.LD. Sunday’s on Channel 4 at 9pm.

T

his time of year is when we’re hoping to say goodbye to the bitter cold winter and seeking out our spring summer wardrobes. This season’s colour palette is a variety of pastel colours entwined with nature’s deep earthy tones and textures. Iced Coffee and Green Flash are popular colours that can re-occur through all seasons; they manifests as a neutral to break up a colourful palette allowing for a contrast that compliments each tone. Theses colours are used to show nature’s influence on fashion even in urban environments, a trend continuing to inspire designers. Lilac Gray is a more mundane tone but is used to a similar affect to Iced Coffee and Green flash. The difference being that this tone doesn’t portray nature in the same way the others do, if anything it brings a subtle urban feel to the pallet. On the other end of the spectrum we have the light tones such as Rose Quartz and Peachy Echo representing the beginning of spring by using delicate textures such as sequins, lace and ruffles to convey a soothing and compassionate nature. Reflecting on the nature theme, these tones reminds us of light hearted surrounding’s, serene sunsets, flushed cheeks and a budding flower in preparation for the upcoming summer months. These shades especially Peachy Echo emanate friendlier qualities signifying warmth and accessibility. Snorkel Blue

36

formally categorized as a navy but with a deeper happier context implies peace and exploration and often works well with Serenity; which is a lighter blue offering a more calming effect. The name alone creates a vivid image of a summer’s day at the beach looking at clear skies and the endless bed of blue as far as the eye can see. Snorkel Blue is somewhat striking with energetic activity bursting from its undertones whereas Serenity gives the feelings of respite to the turbulence around it. Last but not least using a hint of metallic can create the shimmer that doesn’t dominate the pallet but catches your eye by working as the icing on the cake. These tones are primarily used for the detail and decoration of clothing in the foreground rather acting as the bass colour. Reflecting on the Spring/Summer 2016 colour palette, the colours used are neutral making them suitable for both men and women without being overwhelming. The experimentation element lies within the textures created by fabric techniques and breaking the boundaries with unique silhouettes.

DI A RY O F A NON-DIETER Sarah Griffiths of Unique Fitness and Nutrution has set herself a challenge to get me to lose a stone in 3 weeks. by Amanda Moss I am the worst case study, ask anyone. I am fidgety and can’t stick at anything. I have the attention span of a goldfish, ask anyone who sends me a long email, I tend to read just the first line or two. So when Sarah Griffiths invited me to try her detox diet and vowed to get me leaner in 3 weeks, I thought that if anyone was going to be able to do it, it was her. The champion bodybuilder, fitness model and nutrition expert set up her juice bar and health food cafe, Unique Fitness and Nutrition in West Derby in October and has watched it go from strength to strength with her tasty servings of vegan menus, protein shakes, immune busting juices and wholesome food. She supplies to offices, individuals and celebrities. There’ smoothies and juices, champion breakfasts and healthy food meals which are, most importantly, tasty. For all the menus visit After the reluctant measurements (thigh, waist, back, arm, hips) I was handed a large brown bag with some stern instructions. Juices followed by meal, followed by juice followed by meal and then a dinner made by myself. I started off with a juice and then had a salmon fillet on a bed of salad with pine nuts, avocado and pine nuts. It felt like a super meal. I let myself down by having 4 jaffa cakes later on in the evening, but it was far better than a bar a chocolate, I told myself. The next day I had another juice for breakfast and lunch was cod with cous cous, broccoli spears sprinkled with sesame seeds. Both meals were absolutely delicious and surprisingly filling, despite the portions looking small. It just goes to show how much we (I) overeat. After 24 hours I felt a lot better, my senses were alert, I didn’t feel as tired as I usually do and I felt energised to continue on my healthy journey. Sarah is incredibly inspiring. Not only does have a body to die for, but she is extremely kind-hearted and understands the mental state you need 44

to need to be in to train your mind to change. Anyone can do it, she says, even me. She has littered by inbox with encouraging texts to keep me on track. And with her expert guidance maybe, just maybe I will do it this time

From concerts to Aintree Races to meals out for Mother’s Day there are plenty of excuses in which to throw the glad rags on. Waxing, HD Brows and Blow Dries are amongst Liverpool’s most in-demand beauty treatments, according to data just released by hair and beauty booking platform Treatwell. Waxing is the biggest beauty priority, with the ladies booking in for treatments such as arm, leg, and underarm waxing more than any other. Intimate Hollywood waxing took the second place spot leaving Liverpool the smoothest city in the North West. ON THE BOOKSHELF What’s better than to read a novel that takes place right in your neck of the woods? That takes its readers on a thrilling ride of endless crime and mystery in Merseyside, Liverpool? I.D. Jackson, author of Deadly Determination, shows his readers a different side of Liverpool with this compelling novel. Our editor Joy Lewis spoke to Ian about setting his novel in Liverpool and for advice for other budding novelists.

Hi Ian, firstly well done on being nominated for the People's Book Prize for 2016. Thank you very much, it’s a real honour to have been nominated. The People’s Book Prize is perhaps the most prestigious of literary awards as the winner is voted for by readers rather than a panel of judges. Deadly Determination is set in Liverpool - I know you are from here, what made you set your novel here too? I was actually born in Earle Road, Wavertree in 1964 and moved to the Wirral with my parents when I was around eight years old. I love Liverpool and each time I cross the Mersey I feel as though I’m ‘coming home’ somehow. I set my second book, Deadly Determination in Liverpool because her people have a unique perspective on life which appeals to my sense of drama. There is something different about the city that captures a writers’ imagination I think – certainly mine anyway. There are lots of people who would love to become a published author but don't know where to start - do you find a publisher first? Do you write the whole novel or just a story and character outline? For me it was important that I found a literary agent and publisher that were as passionate about my work as I am – it’s great to have support and Percy Publishing have been amazing. 48

For other writers it’s not so important and they are happy to ‘self-publish’ through Amazon or Kobo perhaps. Whichever route a writer chooses it’s important to finish the novel first before submission to give an agent or publisher a chance to analyse the style of writing and a flavour of the story being proposed. What's the best advice you can give for other local budding authors? Keep going and don’t take no for an answer. I applied to more than sixty literary agents before Ruth Killeen decided to take a chance on me and my work. Rejection is part of the writing process and it’s important that a new novelist realises that a ‘no’ or even worse, being ignored altogether, isn’t personal. What's your writing process? Some authors say they live with their characters and they have to write about them do you do something different entirely? That’s a good question. My books begin by creating characters – I like nothing better than imagining a true-to-life character and then building their profile and personality until they seem to be as real as you or I. I then outline a story and go on to challenge my characters within the context of the plot. Sometimes they end up reacting in an unsuspected way and the story is thrown off track – then it’s back to the drawing board.

Deadly Determination is available on Amazon Kindle and in paperback both online at Waterstones, WHSmith, Amazon and through all good bookshops. The voting link for Deadly Determination can be found here: www.peoplesbookprize.com

B I L L R Y D E R J O N E S

Our editor Joy Lewis interviews one of our city’s greatest current musical talents Bill Ryder-Jones. He was the lead guitarist in The Coral, but that was half a lifetime ago, since then he has become a solo musician, singer and songwriter and producer, who has signed to UK independent world famous record label Domino records. He has 3 albums under his belt and written several film soundtracks too. And if that’s not enough, he is also in production work for, The Wytches and Hooton Tennis Club. His latest album West Kirby County Primary, released last November has had great critical acclaim - and the good news is that he is performing it and a few of his new tracks in the Arts Club Liverpool March 10th. HI BILL YOU’RE PERFORMING IN THE ARTS CLUB LIVERPOOL IN A FEW WEEKS, HAVE YOU PLAYED THERE BEFORE? No I haven’t, but I’ve heard great things about it and people keep telling me that I will really enjoy playing there. We will be performing the new album and a few new tracks that I’ve been working on too. I’m really looking forward to it. SO MANY PEOPLE REMEMBER YOU STILL FROM BEING THE LEAD GUITARIST FOR THE CORAL – BUT THAT WAS SO LONG AGO AND YOU HAVE ACHIEVED SO MUCH SINCE THEN, DO YOU JUST WANT PEOPLE TO FORGET ABOUT THAT PART OF YOUR CAREER NOW? Well I am very proud of being in the Coral, and what we achieved so I don’t mind people remembering me for being in that. But thankfully people aren’t shouting out old Coral song requests at my own gigs – that has never happened, I might feel differently if they did. People who come and see me now know me for my new music and they want to hear that instead – which I am grateful for.

52

DO YOU PREFER BEING A SOLO ARTIST NOW AND JUST HAVING YOURSELF TO RELY ON? Oh yes I much prefer it. But there are times when I’m just not as up for it as other times, in my band days that was okay because people didn’t want to interview me, and I could just put my head

down and play guitar. I can’t do that now, there is no hiding anymore. But that’s the only downside really. And I have my band with me anyway, together we are all best mates so it’s the best of both worlds now. YOU HAVE WRITTEN AND PRODUCED SO MUCH MUSIC WHAT’S YOUR WRITING PROCESS? My writing is ongoing. When I can write and it is flowing I will try and get as much done as possible and not stop. But there are times when it’s not happening too, and the music just isn’t flowing. When that happens I try not to get stressed and lose confidence. It’s not like a performance sport where the more you practice the better you get, you just have to be patient and wait for it to come. 30TH ANNIVERSARY TOUR – 11TH MARCH O2 ACADEMY LIVERPOOL

THE ST RANG LERS

BL ACK & WHITE TOUR – 8TH MARCH O2 ACADEMY LIVERPOOL

54

The Stranglers head out on a full UK tour this month, which will see them showcase their legendary Black & White album both chronologically and in its entirety plus additional material new and old. The band's third studio album Black & White was unleashed in May 1978 and showed them to be the first of their peers to break away from the 'punk' formula of the previous year. Described recently by journalist John Robb as “the first post punk album”, its release was acclaimed by fans and critics alike at the time and it reached Number 2 in the UK charts. Lyrically, subject matter had been broadened by the band's recent travels around the world and included the Cold War, Yukio Mishima, Sweden and Hell's Angels. Musically, taking inspiration from influences as diverse as Devo and Captain Beefheart, the album pushed the boundaries of the band's established sound and they experimented with quirky time signatures and synthesisers-one track even includes a morse code message! The album was split into two distinct 'sides'-the 'white side' proving closer to the band's first two albums while the 'black side' was a darker and more challenging listen. To underline the stark & polarised content of the album, a press junket to Iceland was organised which ended up with a variety of accidents affecting various journalists... The special guests for the complete tour will be Welsh rockers The Alarm featuring Mike Peters.

To mark their 30th anniversary The Wonder Stuff release their eighth studio album, 30 Goes Around The Sun, on March 19th 2016 - thirty years to the day since the band first walked into a rehearsal studio in the heart of The Black Country in 1986. The band chose to revisit its old stomping ground of Stourbridge to record the album and even managed to persuade renowned heavy metal and hard rock producer, Simon Efemey (Paradise Lost/Napalm Death/The Wildhearts), to return to his home town to produce the record. Whilst the line-up of The Wonder Stuff may have changed since those early days (original bassist Rob 'The Bass Thing' Jones and drummer Martin Gilks both sadly now deceased) Miles Hunt is still leading the charge, ably supported by his fellow band members Mark McCarthy (bass guitar since 2003), Erica Nockalls (violin and vocals since 2005), Dan Donnelly (guitar and vocals since 2014) and Tony Arthy (drums since 2014). The Wonder Stuff will be touring in conjunction with the album's release, of this Hunt remarked; "The Wonder Stuff is a live band, that's why it exists. Some people 30 ANNIVERSARY TOUR might be happy to spend months or years sitting in studios noodling around with computers, but that isn't why I got into the game. I need a regular fix of the full sensory overload FRIDAY 11 MARCH 2016 that is a gig, there's O ACADEMY LIVERPOOL nothing to equal it." TH

IT’S A WONDERFUL, WONDERFUL LIFE

I

first ever deejayed at my cousin’s eighteenth in 1986 and became a professional one at the original Baa Bar on Fleet Street in the early nineties. I earned my wings playing upstairs there in that sweaty back room to a faithful throng twice every weekend for the next five years. I’ve played just about everywhere else since then - from Metro to Modo and from Mustard to Cream and every hip bar and juke joint in between and in 2014 - I became a wedding deejay. A much different but equally demanding set of circumstances which present both the joy and pressure of being significant part of a momentous day in somebody’s life. I love everything about it, apart from humping the gear in and out of the van.

LIFESTYLE’S MUSIC COLUMNIST

MARTIN QUIRK martinquirk365@msn.com

I’m lucky to play every week at spectacular venues around Liverpool like the Palm House, the Isla Gladstone Conservatory and even the Liver Building and at beautiful hotels like Hope Street and Hard Day’s Night. Where, recently, the sharp-suited, ex-Mod, uncle of the groom asked for a particular song and the microphone. Madness’s ‘One Step Beyond’ opened as he put on his cool shades and started to emcee. Uncle Mod rocked. Soon, everybody - nanas, grandads, aunties, kids, hotel staff and, eventually , even this very DJ - had formed one of those long lines made famous by the Nutty Boys in their video and was dancing along with joy in their hearts. It was a truly wonderful few minutes which will probably stay with everyone forever. That’s what Music is for. As well as articulating, expressing and making sense of our most intimate thoughts, feelings and emotions, it captures those shared moments in time for us to revisit. So, when a great musician dies, as so many have recently, we may share a sense of loss and a small part of all of us who have ever been touched by their music mourns their passing. From our mother’s heart beating through our body while we are still in her womb, until our final curtain call, life is a wonder full of music. Dedicated to Maurice White and Colin Vearncombe/ Black

WHAT COLOUR ARE YOU? PART 2

COMMUNICATION It amazes me how you spend a good part of your life looking for your perfect match or the person you want to spend the rest of your life with, only to then spend the time hoping and attempting to get them to be more like you! We all know the adage that opposites attract, this is true in lots of cases. As a YELLOW I enjoy games, stories fun and energy, my brother has a lot of RED energy. We were on holiday some years ago and I thought it would be great fun to throw a Frisbee to each other on the beach for the afternoon. The first question my brother asked was how do you win, I told him it wasn’t about winning it was about having fun, he didn’t seemed convinced so he decided that if you dropped the Frisbee or at least didn’t catch it then you had to go down on one, then both knees if you dropped it again so at least you could easily see who was winning. As a red he loves competition and as such turns pretty much everything into a challenge, I’m sure you know people like my brother, winning isn’t everything, but it sure is the only thing for lots of REDS. I invited a friend to come to the European football final in Greece in 2007, I knew I was going to drive south then pretty much work it out from there, how difficult could it be. He decided he wanted to join me and with a short period of time had planned the route, knew the ferry times, knew the distance and had booked us accommodation for when we arrived, he is a very strong BLUE. He likes knowing exactly what’s expected and doesn’t enjoy surprises. As a YELLOW I love

58

surprises. Without me he may never have gone on the trip, without him I could still be finding my way to Greece. Below are some tips on communicating with the different colours Red - fast paced, to the point, little waffle, outcome focused Yellow - fast paced, enthusiastic, high energy, little detail Blue - slow paced, clear, detailed, well thought out Green - slow paced, explained, consistent, clear expectations Getting this right has a massive impact in how people receive our communication, getting it wrong as equal consequences, opposites may see the opposing colour in very different ways. Reds can see Greens as pushovers due to the considered nature and Greens can see Reds as bullies due to their pace, drive and perceived brashness. Yellows can see Blues as dull or boring due to the thoughtfulness Blues can see Yellows as flighty and goby as yellows talk to think as blues think to talk. When working with teams and couples, explaining these basic patterns of people really can change the way people understand one and other and make communication so much easier. CRAIG PHILLIPS DIY Hello Lifestyle Readers, First off, I’ve been filming some new videos for Tile Mountain, which offers a wide selection of tiles for around the home. Shooting ‘how to’ videos is something I really enjoy as I love sharing some of the knowledge I’ve built up over the years and helping others with their DIY tasks. Hopefully these will be ready in the near future so watch this space!

I also had the pleasure of attending the Checkatrade Winter Ball which was held at The Guildhall in Portsmouth. A glamorous black tie event, the evening featured a three-course dinner and fantastic entertainment. It also provided a great opportunity to raise funds for the Checkatrade Foundation which focuses on helping children and people in need. Another event I attended was put on by my management agency, Champions, who hosted their annual charity ball at the King Power Stadium in Leicester. They organise numerous events throughout the year and I try to attend as many as I can as they’re always fantastic fun! Finally, I had the opportunity to go out skiing in Austria – one of my passions and something I love to do in the wintertime.

Changing internal door handles is a very quick and easy task that can give a completely new look to your doors. This job can be completed within five minutes, though if you’re fitting handles to a new door that hasn’t already had handles fitted this will be a bit more tricky and should take about 15 minutes. If you’re just changing the existing handles, start by screwing all four screws from each handle both sides of the door using your cordless screwdriver, leaving the centre ‘square bar’ inside the door and latch. Simply reposition your new handles onto both sides of the door and re-screw using the same holes from the original screws to drive your new screws firmly into position. To fit handles from scratch into a new door you will need to set out and mark up on the edge of the new door with your pencil. Drill out the centre hole for the door latch to fit into using your cordless drill and a 22mm spade drill bit deep enough for the lash to completely sink into the edge of the door.

As usual, I’ve provided one of my DIY tips for you all to have a go at – happy DIYing!

d r o W t s a L e Th entrusted me to work with them to plan a enormous wedding proposal for my friend. A recent trip to Paris and Valentine’s Day both

Well hello spring, I’ve missed you. We’re a quarter of a way through 2016, hasn’t that my husband tells me we notice it more as we get older. Our kids seem to be growing up faster, my eldest child will learn to drive next year. That’s just plain nuts. I am hurtling through my 40s with lightening speed and my business is heading towards its eighth birthday. Ten years ago I never would have thought I would be self employed and earning an income from it. The start of this month sees us celebrating one of my favourite events in my calendar, the Liverpool Lifestyle Awards. So many people are self employed, so many of us are so busy building up their own little empires that they often don’t stop to see what is going on around. That’s why it’s important to stop and give ourselves a pat on the back and take time to celebrate with like minded individuals. I’ve had to keep a really big secret this month My best friend’s brother and boyfriend have
