OCTOBER ISSUE 90 A note from our editor...

Hello lovely Lifestyle readers! This is my favorite month. Why? Lots of reasons, from the changes of colour in nature, the colder weather to the nights finally drawing in. Yes, I am one of the strange folk who actually prefers the chillier weather and the shorter days. The food is better too, warm cider, homemade soup, big pans of scouse bubbling on the stove and the ability to put the central heating on without feeling guilty. Not forgetting the fact that we have Halloween at the end of the month. My twins will be dressed as a dragon (god only knows how I’m going to create that outfit) and a pirate - these two things they are obsessed with. The house will be decorated, two huge pumpkins will be carved, bobbing apples will be played and hot chocolate swimming with marshmallows will be drunk before we will tear around the neighborhood giving away chocolate lollypops to passersby. Happy Days. I’ve always loved Halloween, my mum loved it too, and now I have my own children I enjoy passing on old traditions, in the hopes that they will remember these days and recreate them in their own way with their own children. I always make the most of all celebrations, I’m never one to poo poo anything just because Hallmark might make money from it or that America might have done the holiday first. I always see these daft holidays as a new way to create a happy memory for my twins, to give them the chance to dress up, to be silly and let their imaginations run wild. They grow up fast enough anyway, so I don’t plan on letting a single opportunity pass by where I can be daft with them. Happy Halloween,

Joy x

Izzy BIzu MusIcal InspIratIon he on t r cove

Born to an Ethiopian mother and an English father, Izzy’s rich cultural tapestry has informed her soulful pop soundscape. Growing up on a diet of Ella Fitzgerald, Amy Winehouse and Marvin Gaye, Izzy’s delicate acoustica threads those nostalgic funk-and-soul elements with a genuine indie spirit. At just eighteen, South West London native Izzy Bizu was discovered at an ILUVLIVE Open Mic competition. It’s no surprise that she won when she impressed Emeli Sande and Naughty Boy who were amongst her audience.

18 YEARS AND YEARS

Six month’s after her discovery, Izzy’s debut EP Coolbeanz caught the attention of Radio 1 tastemakers Zane Lowe, Gemma Cairney and Huw Stephens, as well as BRIT award winner Sam Smith, who invited Izzy to support him on tour. Our editor Joy Lewis caught up with Izzy for a quick chat…..

Let IT Be

T

he music of the Beatles defined a generation, captured the hearts and ideals of millions, and now we will be able to relive the memories as Annerin Productions proudly presents the musical extravaganza LET IT BE. The International hit show that celebrates the music of The Beatles also marks the official re-launch of the multi-million pound refurbishment of the Royal Court Theatre. Already a global hit, LET IT BE will run for 5½ weeks from Thursday 8 October – Saturday 14 November 2015. The opening is also set to coincide with John Lennon’s 75th birthday which falls on Friday 9th October. The smash hit show that established itself as one of the West End’s most popular shows when the production originally opened at the Prince of Wales Theatre in September 2012, where it recouped its initial investment after just 18 weeks before transferring for a year-long run at the Savoy Theatre from January 2013 – February 2014. The show has recently returned to the West End for an 8 month run at the Garrick Theatre. 12

Packed with over forty of The Beatles' songs, including: Hard Day's Night, Day Tripper, Sgt

Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band, Twist and Shout, Get Back, I Wanna Hold Your Hand and Strawberry Fields, the show will play for 'one night only' in most cities. Enjoyed by over 800,000 people worldwide, LET IT BE continues to delight fans around the globe, having recently performed for audiences in Germany, Japan, Moscow, Singapore and the U.K. The show musically charts the band's meteoric rise from their humble beginning in Liverpool's Cavern Club through the height of Beatlemania, and on to their later studio masterpieces. bill bailey

Bill Bailey’s fans are in limbo no longer. Finally Bill is back on tour and performing his new show “Limboland” at the Philharmonic for two nights this October. The show promises a coruscating evening which majors on the theme of why life never lives up to our expectations. The critics 14

agree. The New York Times said that, “Bill is an unalloyed pleasure, a treat for the funny bone, the brain and the ear,” while The Daily Telegraph commented that he was, “A Hobbit with a wicked sense of humour.”

Bill began his interview by outlining the main theme of “Limboland.” “It’s about not living up to our own expectations. We have a vaulted idea of what we imagined we’d achieve and then we realise the reality is somewhat different. The show explores the gap between the two.”

For example, in “Limboland”, Bill invites us to contemplate what it means to be English. “The idea of English-ness now has a stigma attached to it,” the comedian observes. “I want to say, ‘No, I’m proud of my English-ness’. We have good qualities that get lost in the mix of nationalism.”

After some time away from the live arena working on other projects, Bill is very happy to be back on stage. He underlines what a buzz he gets from performing stand-up. “I always get a surge of adrenaline before a show. It really gets the heart pumping in a way that a TV recording doesn’t. A TV recording can be stopped and you can go again until it’s funny. Producers say, ‘We’ll cut that bit out.’ You can’t do that with stand-up.”

Music also plays a huge role in the brilliance of Bill’s act. It adds an element to the show that very few other stand-ups possess. For instance, he performs a stunning Reggae version of the Downton Abbey theme tune that once heard will never be forgotten.

Another indication of Bill’s popularity is the terrific loyalty he generates in his legions of fans. He enjoys a superb rapport with his followers. “They really respond to the show,” beams Bill, who had six highly successful years as a team captain on BBC2’s much loved pop quiz, Never Mind the Buzzcocks. “They say to me, ‘We didn’t feel the show was dumbing down in any way. It respected our intelligence as an audience.’ That’s very important to me. I never underestimate an audience. If you challenge them, they’ll respond.” Bill, who has also starred in the hit C4 sitcom Black Books, as well as his own widely-adored TV shows, Is It Bill Bailey? and Bill Bailey Live, continues that, “If you’re a half-decent comedian, you should be able to get laughs every time. “But if at the same time you can slip in a bit of something else – a historical appraisal of how different musical modes reflect different cultures, say – as well as keeping it funny, then audiences react very favourably. The first priority is to make them laugh, but the second priority is to make them think.”

The performer, who had great success with his BBC2 show and live tour of Bill Bailey’s Remarkable Guide to the Orchestra, muses that, “I’ve found a way of incorporating music into my show. I love playing different instruments. Acts where everything comes together can be transcendent. They are greater than the sum of their parts. Music can take things to a higher level.” Bill is always busy. As well as his thriving comedy career, this very keen wildlife enthusiast has a flourishing sideline presenting natural history programs, such as Wild Thing, I Think I Love You, Bill Bailey’s Birdwatching Bonanza, Baboons with Bill Bailey, and Bill Bailey’s Jungle Hero. To underscore his natural history credentials, Bill was recently given an Honorary Doctorate by the University of the Sunshine Coast in Queensland, Australia for his outstanding contribution to the environment on a global scale. But will all this activity ever get too much for him? Would this sublime stand-up ever think about retiring from comedy? “I don’t think I’ll ever retire,” Bill concludes. “As l long as I can still stand up and play instruments, I’ll carry on.” Tickets for Bill Bailey’s “Limboland” tour can be found at www.TicketMaster.co.uk and 0844 844 0444

GO PINK FOR PEOPLE FACING BREAST CANCER THIS OCTOBER

very year more than 55,000 people in the UK are diagnosed with breast cancer, and the disease changes everything. Time becomes measured in appointments. The next scan. The next results. The next challenge. Breast Cancer Care are the only specialist breast cancer support charity there to help people from day one through their vital online, phone and face-to-face services. And it’s only thanks to the generosity of those raising funds for the charity that they’re able to provide these specialist nurses, local services and emotional support networks for free. That’s why this October, Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Breast Cancer Care is urging locals to join the charity in holding a Big Pink fundraising day on 16 October. Whether it’s a dress down day at work, a brunch, lunch or cosy night in with friends – anything goes, as long as it’s pink. Jane O’Neill of Merseyside has raised over £12,000 at her Big Pink events over the last 10 years:

“We choose a theme each year – we’ve done everything from pink car boot sales to 3-legged races. I get the girls round for lunch or afternoon tea too. We all know someone affected by breast cancer, so it’s about getting loved ones together and raising money for a good cause”. Alec Raven, Head of Community Fundraising at Breast Cancer Care, added: “We’re calling on the people of Liverpool to gather their families, friends, colleagues and neighbours to hold a Big Pink for Breast Cancer Care this Breast Cancer Awareness Month. 570,000 women in the UK are currently living with a breast cancer diagnosis. Right now, we can’t reach all of them on the day that they need us. But you can help. 16 October is the day you can support us to make sure we’re there for people affected by breast cancer, every day, from day one.” Fancy holding your own Big Pink? Join Breast Cancer Care and thousands of other hosts across the UK on 16 October, or pick a date that suits you. It can be as fuss-free as you like – and whether you raise £20 or £200, every penny will help Breast Cancer Care continue to support people facing breast cancer. So whatever you do this October, make a difference. Make it big. And make it pink! Years and Years Years and Years, the soulful electronic pop band, who were have named the BBC Music Sound Of 2015, and were top list of the ones to watch this year, are coming to the 02 Academy Liverpool 20th October.

S

elling over 55k records in its first week, Years & Years’ debut album Communion entered the UK album chart at #1 on July 17th. As well as it being the fastest selling debut in 2015 from a UK signed band, it was also the first #1 on the inaugural New Music Fridays release date marking a moment in history. In addition, their #1 status has held for a second consecutive week, making Communion the first debut album to achieve that so far this year. This incredible achievement marked a peak in the Years & Years story that has been building over the last few years. “I grew up on people like Stevie Wonder and Joni Mitchell, but in the past few years I’ve become really passionate about electronic music and how there’s no limits to what you can create with it,” says lead singer Alexander. “You can push the sound in this crazy way, and still keep it as real and honest and emotional as any other music out there.” With their luminous brand of electro-pop, the London-based trio layer sweetly smooth vocals over bright and heady beats to create what they call “music you can dance and cry to.” As winners of the BBC Sound of 2015 Poll (an honour previously granted to such critically praised hitmakers as Sam Smith, Adele, and Ellie Goulding), bassist Mikey Goldsworthy, keyboard player Emre Turkmen, and vocalist Olly Alexander have spent the last few years charming audiences worldwide by merging R&B, deep house, and classic-pop with both elegance and abandon. Appearing on 2015 Artists to Watch lists from the likes of The Guardian, Digital Spy, DIY, BuzzFeed, and Huffington Post, Years & Years have capitalized on 18

that early promise and broken through with their debut album, Communion. Proving Years & Years’ complexity as songwriters and artists, Communion also offers its share of songs with a more joyful and blissed-out bent. Latest single ‘Shine’, which held 2 consecutive weeks at #2 in the UK singles chart in July, begins with driving beats and dreamy R&B harmonies and then morphs into a full-throttle dance number, gloriously capturing the butterflies-inthe-belly thrill of falling in love. “The metaphor of ‘shine’ and ‘shining’ comes from the way somebody can make you feel totally brand-new and special and re-made in the light of their love, but how that can feel incredibly unstable and overwhelming and make you want to destroy yourself,” explains Alexander. On ‘Border’, breezy tropical beats and bubbly synth blend together to conjure up a powerful anthem of hope (“I’m going to the border/My body will be stronger/My heart will start to shine/And I will be all right”). And throughout Communion, Years & Years channel an equally magnetic and infectious energy into songs like ‘Take Shelter’, a hypnotic, dancehall-beat-driven track that shot to #1 on the iTunes UK Electronic Singles chart. LIFESTYLE TALKS TO... Danielle Simcock

‘aka’ Painted Lady is one of the most sought after makeup artists in Liverpool right now. If you haven’t met her yet, then be quick as she has a massive waiting list! She is Head of Makeup for Liverpool Fashion Week this year and was very selective in choosing her team. We managed to grab Danielle for a quick chat…….. Hi Danielle, it’s a pleasure to meet you! Are you excited for Liverpool Fashion Week? Nice to meet you too! Oh yes, very! I’m so excited, I’m very proud of the looks I’ve created and the team I’ve sourced to work with me at the shows. It’s going to be nice to have some of the best MUA’s in the city all in one room working together to create some amazing looks. How did you create the looks for the shows? From seeing the designers collections and after meeting our models at our open day boot camp, we have some really good designers and some strong makeup looks this year. Think dark, vampy looks vs. bronzed autumnal eyes with gold lips. I’m not saying anymore, you will have to come to the shows! (Pulls tongues!) Which element of your job do you enjoy the most - shows or shoots? I’m really busy with my Painted Lady Makeup business. I offer a mobile service, where I go to client’s houses, wedding venues, hotel rooms etc. I do makeup, hair up do’s, semi permanent eyelashes and spray tans. I’ve worked in shops and salons over the years but prefer to be mobile. Some clients feel intimidated going into a shop, so they love the personal touch of me going into their home, where they feel most comfortable. I LOVE shoots and shows as well though with the hype and buzz and being under pressure. I’m very grateful to have been asked to be Head Makeup Artist for Liverpool Fashion Week this year.

26

How did you get into makeup? I’ve always had a huge passion for makeup, art & fashion. I graduated in Fashion Design, worked in design for years, later moved into fashion marketing, styling and blogging. I would work alongside some amazing artists behind the scenes and loved to watch. Makeup started as a hobby really, it’s been a natural progression for me to go from art and design into makeup. This is my real passion. Do you think everyone looks better with makeup? No, I wouldn’t say that. I think the main part of my job is creating the best look to suit that person. For example, you can plan in advance for shows and shoots from briefs and seeing the models etc, but when I knock at a client’s house I’ve never met before, I have no idea what they’re going to look like or want. It’s about advising them. If someone asks me for a look and I think it won’t suit them, I will tell them. I want them to look their best. It’s about enhancing what you’ve got. What’s in your personal makeup bag? I love Illamasqua! It’s my favourite brand. Oh and Sleek - I love their lipsticks. My eyes aren’t as young as they were so I tend to go for lots of colour on my lips. A must have for me is translucent powder as I have oily skin. I like to try new things, as a makeup artist it’s essential to keep up with new products. I don’t really have a personal makeup bag. I use my kit, which is massive, so makes getting ready for a night out lots of fun! Lifestyle: Well we could have talked to Danielle for hours! If you would like to book an appointment with her, you can find her on Facebook or call 07703348583.

Stoptober NHS and Public Health Liverpool urge smokers to give up this Stoptober LIVERPOOL smokers are being urged to sign up to Stoptober with friends, family and colleagues to boost chances of quitting. he Stoptober campaign calls on smokers to sign up together - as research shows they are 67% more likely to quit if their partner also stops smoking, and 36% more likely to quit if a friend stops. By signing up to Stoptober quitters will get humorous supportive messages from some of the nation’s top comedians – Bill Bailey, Al Murray, Shappi Khorsandi and Rhod Gilbert. Combining online support from comedians with a smoker’s ‘real world’ social groups can help increase their chances of getting through 28 days smokefree. Over a quarter of a million people across the country signed up to Stoptober last year with more than half making it to 28 days. This year it is expected the campaign will welcome the millionth sign up. Dr Sandra Davies, Liverpool’s Director of Public Health, said: “Signing up to quit smoking is singularly the best thing you can do for you and your family’s health. We know that the vast majority of smokers in Liverpool are keen to give up and our message is that there is lots of support to help with this, ranging from Stoptober through to our local services like Roy Castle FagEnds and our local pharmacies across the city.” “If you have tried unsuccessfully to stop smoking before, don’t be put off, give it another go, and join the thousands of people across the city signing up to Stoptober. By stopping smoking for 28 days you are five times more likely to stop for good.” Lisa Williams, Service Manager for Roy Castle FagEnds, said: “Giving up smoking can be very difficult and we know it often takes more than one attempt for people to break the habit. The good news is that if you quit smoking for four weeks then we know you have a much greater chance of quitting for good. 28

“FagEnds is here to support people throughout Stoptober and on into the future, so even if you’ve tried to quit before and not managed it yet, you shouldn’t give up on giving up.” Roy Castle FagEnds has supported over 100,000 smokers in Liverpool through their quit attempt, with over half of those successfully giving up. It provides a variety of free support, including group and one to one sessions with trained advisors and medication such as patches, inhalators and Champix that can support people in quitting. Also available is support for people looking to give up e-cigarettes, as well as traditional tobacco. By signing up to Stoptober, participants can choose from a range of free support tools including daily emails and text messages from the comedians throughout the 28 day quit attempt as well as a mobile phone app which includes lots more tips and advice - all of which have shown to increase the chances of staying smokefree. This year’s campaign also coincides with new legislation in England and Wales making it illegal to smoke in a vehicle with someone under the age of 18 present. To sign up to the nation’s biggest mass quit attempt, search Stoptober online or visit www. smokefree.nhs.uk/stoptober People who want to use Roy Castle FagEnds can call 0800 195 2131. The helpline is open 9.30am to 7pm Monday to Friday. To find out which pharmacies offer stop smoking support contact Health Promotion on 0151 295 3256 on weekdays 9am – 5pm.

Insane Championship Wrestling UK TOUR ANNOUNCEMENT ROAD TO FEAR & LOATHING TOUR 2015

30

Welcome to the wonderful world of Insane Championship Wrestling - this is no ordinary wrestling event. This is riotous, brutal chaos where the stakes are high and this time it’s personal! A television sensation since the debut show, Insane Fight Club, this summer saw them return to our screens with the BBC 3 programme, Insane Fight Club II – This Time It’s Personal. And now, Insane Championship Wrestling live is back with a brand new UK tour. ICW are bringing the ring to O2 Academy Liverpool on Friday 16th and with Danny Hope, Grado and Drew Galloway all confirmed to appear it looks set to be one hell of a night. Their visit to Liverpool back in April showed exactly why they have the reputation for being the most no-hold barred wrestling movement – forget

the fakes, this is real! Nothing compares to the live events. With ICW you get an ‘insane’ show. Darker than most other wrestling shows, with a strict over 18s policy, there are characters for everyone to love and hate; quite literally with blood, sweat, tears, each more brutal than the next. he buzz created at the The Fashion Week Bootcamp was completely immense. As soon as the models started practising their walks, the whole vibe in the room changed. I’m so excited! Another thing which excited me was having the best seat in the house. Directly behind Joe Bradley's bum. Which he was swinging a lot. Hmmmm. The Liner Hotel was not only where bootcamp took place, it's also a venue for Fashion Week itself. For me, it's a fab choice. Great location (just behind Lime Street so your heels won't be a problem), friendly staff and a bar that serves Prosecco by the glass or bottle. What more could a girl want?! There were 26 models present and the difference in them all by the end of the day astounded me. Heads were higher, shoulders were back, they were all interacting and laughing with each other. It really was fantastic to witness. Women of all shapes and sizes are beautiful. Liverpool Fashion Week and the models who will be participating prove that!

Quote of the day:

on the ir job is to look great "Some models think the lucky. y're the if t sho a graphers catwalk and give the photo re" osu exp e wid rld wo n't get you The back of your head wo Ian Williamson let them think you’re an agency enjoy a glass of prosecco scout leave it on the floor to get kicked get a seat that enables you to look over at Joe Bradley’s bottom ask the models their names so you shout out “I love you Joe”. Especially can write about them when the room is silent

Dos and Don’ts

• Do • Don’t • Do 32

The stand out girls for me were Lauren Lanson-17, Courtenay Knowles-22, and Amelia Ridgeway-17. I have a feeling these girls will be big hits during LFW. Head Hairstylists for Fashion Week Andrew Joseph Manion Hairdressing were there to tell the models what's expected of them hair wise and to give us an insight into the styles they'll be using. I'm not going to give the game away, but expect to be impressed! As regular readers will know, us here at Lifestyle Monthly are big fans of Kira Smith, who provided Little Princess makeovers on the day. But the runaway successes of Kira's table were her henna tattoos. Henna is a huge trend in Liverpool at the moment and the queue was evidence of that!

PETE IS ON 5 NIGHTS A WEEK ON RADIO CITY TALK 105.9 FROM 10PM

It’s amazing that I have a late night phone in, 5 nights a week on City Talk 105.9 starting at 10pm Sunday to Thursday. I wonder how many people reading this take for granted how fortunate we are in this country to have a voice, a free media, unafraid to print different views. There are countries all over the world fighting to get this freedom. Wherever there is a phone in you should always use it and never abuse it. It’s a way of changing peoples opinions and giving your opinions without a knock on the door to arrest you and have you carted away as is the case in some countries.

EVERTON MANAGER OFFICIALLY OPENS EVERTON FREE SCHOOL verton manager Roberto Martinez joined leading education, charity and business figures at the official opening of Everton Free School and Sixth Form College on Tuesday 15 September whilst Belgian international Kevin Mirallas called into classes to meet with students. The Blues boss was in attendance at the official opening ceremony of the multi-million pound education institution on Spellow Lane alongside Everton CEO Robert Elstone and Club Ambassadors Graeme Sharp, Ian Snodin and Graham Stuart where they heard speeches from Executive Principal Phil Duffy and Everton in the Community CEO and Chair of Governors Denise Barrett-Baxendale as well as hearing first hand from former students about the impact Everton Free School has had on their lives, both personally and professionally. Invited guests also heard from key speaker Colin Diamond, former Head of Education Advisers for the Department for Education of UK, before the ceremony was officially drawn to a close by Martinez with him unveiling a plaque to official declare Everton Free School and Sixth Form College open. Earlier in the afternoon Everton midfielder Kevin Mirallas visited the school and was given a personal tour around the new multi-million pound facility where he called into classrooms to meet students and find out more about the courses they are studying. The Belgian international took part in a Sixth Form sports session in the impressive sports hall before putting his maths skills into practise and then visiting a science lesson where he joined the students in learning about the science behind fingerprinting. Speaking after the opening ceremony Martinez said: “It is a privilege and an honour to be invited here today as Everton manager to see and hear about the determination, the passion and the belief of individuals 40

who have contributed to the fantastic accomplishment that is Everton Free School.” “So many of the values and ideals that we treasure as Evertonians about our unique, magnificent football club are embodied within this school; our community to community, our pursuit of excellence, and our promise to encourage and develop young people. This is a very proud day to everyone associated with Everton Free School, Everton in the Community and Everton Football Club.” Everton Free School and Sixth Form College was constructed as part of the Government’s Free School programme and caters for a maximum of 200 students. The impressive £4.2million facility includes a teaching block, sports hall, a covered “street” running through the complex and a curving “creative block” close to the existing buildings. Everton in the Community created history in September 2012 when it became the first “ClubCommunity” scheme in the country to be awarded funding by the Government to open a Free School; a ground-breaking initiative for young people across Merseyside. Everton Free School caters for young people aged 14-16 and offers and alternative education pathway to those where traditional methods in mainstream schools have failed. The Free School also offers an ‘open’ Sixth Form which attracts many 16-19-year-old students who choose to study sport within the environment and surroundings of a Premier League football club. As a centre of learning, Everton Free School and Sixth Form College dedicates itself to ensuring that every student has access to the best possible curriculum which suits their needs, develops positive aspirations set firmly within a variety of learning experiences which are enjoyable, relevant, motivating and challenging. kay, so we weren’t in one of these countries but the temperature was soaring, with hot waiters and waitresses and even tastier dishes at Fazenda Liverpool. It was a busy early Saturday evening when we arrived, originally just 3 adults but then some of the kids joined us and the managers wasted no time finding us a table and preparing our place settings. You can see the staff work well as a team and co ordinate each other, from steering the meats to the guests to be carved at their tables, to ensuring the buffet is well stocked and bringing extra plates of food from the grill, such a salted chips and belly pork. The meats taste amazing, it’s a carnivorous feast of 15 cuts (7 at lunchtime) of beef, pork, lamb and chicken, the steak is incredible and they will cook it to your requirements. To accompany this is a generous salad bar which you can return to as many times as your appetite will allow. It’s more than just salads, however, there were whole grains, pastas, potatoes, cheeses, cream vegetables and authentic brazilian dishes, all types of bread and snacks. The only other time I have seen such a display was onboard the QE2 cruise ship.

The meals are a set price and quite reasonable for adults but overpriced for children (£28.95per adult £14.95 per child) which can add up with drinks, especially as it doesn’t include dessert. But who can seriously find room for a sweet after such a delicious and never ending amount of food that is delivered to your plate. The waiters are courteous and know their meats and wines and are happy to chat to you while they serve you. This adds to a great atmosphere where cleanliness is of a very high standard. This guarantees a wonderful dinner and having eaten there on three occasions, it won’t be long before I return, especially with children as they are guaranteed to eat a healthy protein filled dinner without a vile chicken nugget in sight. For the full menu with serious mouthwatering images that realistically reflect what will be brought to your table visit www.fazenda.co.uk

Bake Off Winner Uses stale Bread tO HigHligHt fOOd Waste

F

ood fans who raved over a slap-up feast prepared by Great British Bake Off champion Nancy Birtwhistle were left stunned when she revealed the main ingredient — STALE BREAD. Bake Off queen Nancy joined forces with national charity Love Food Hate Waste to create a menu with one requirement – each course had to contain bread which had gone stale. They cooked up the idea after figures revealed that 24 MILLION slices of bread are thrown away in the UK every day – with one in five Brits binning a loaf without even opening it. Diners turned up for the three-course meal at a pop-up restaurant in London’s Borough Market to find out the ingredient in all three courses was stale household bread. It was only after Nancy had supplied a niçoise salad for starter with black olive croutons, moussaka with a breadcrumb topping for main course and a summer terrine for pudding, that they were told the bread was stale. Nancy said: “There’s an assumption with people, my family included, that stale bread means ‘gone off’ bread, fit for the bin. But in actual fact stale bread is an ingredient, and we need it for every course in the menu I cooked today. It wasn’t until I came out of the kitchen at the end of the meal and revealed that stale bread had been used in each dish that they all gasped! But though the bread was stale, they raved about how much they enjoyed it.’’ Nancy, who impressed the judges of last year’s Bake Off with her no nonsense approach to baking, has spoken frequently on the importance of being thrifty with food.

42

Diner Holly Harwood, 25, a production assistant from London, said ‘’I really enjoyed the meal, the terrine was my favourite. I didn’t even realise it was bread as it tasted more like cake. I know that stale bread is often used in cooking and it shouldn’t bother people, because when prepared properly it tastes really good. Maybe those who aren’t into cooking would be wary, but if they tried it they’d probably love it. I freeze bread a lot, but after today I’ll definitely think about other things I can use it for.’’ Clare Morfin, 48, a business development director from Great Dunmow, Essex, said: ‘’The nicoise salad was excellent; you could really taste the olives in the croutons. “I think we’re all a bit guilty of throwing too much bread away, and with the economic climate we have in Britain right now it’s great to learn of new ways to make it go further.’’ Chef Nancy joined forces with Love Food Hate Waste to take part in the Use Your Loaf campaign to help us all to make more of our bread. There are more tips, recipes and waste solutions at www.lovefoodhatewaste.com showcasing how we can all use our loaf.

Situated in the business district on Castle Street the venue is a much needed addition to the food and drink scene in this part of town. Guest where treated to a champagne reception and cocktails ranging from the Mai Tai to Raimas Punch with a live DJ set thrown in to add to the atmosphere on the night. With a range of booths, as well as a two private rooms bookable for parties, one entered through a wardrobe and the other which has the bar running into it, there is something quite fascinating about this quirky little venue.

SARAH GIGGLE Sarah Giggle is quite possibly the most glamorous dj ever, and she’s dropping some serious beats at this year Childsplay Liverpool Fashion Week. Our Editor Joy Lewis, caught up with Sarah to find out a bit more about the Ibiza resident. Hi Sarah, can you tell me a little about yourself? Hello, I'm from East London Essex, but I’m currently living in Manchester. I'm a music producer and dj. I'm extremely lucky as my work takes me all over the world. How did you get into Music? I kind of fell into being a dj. I was in the pub with the boys one evening and one of them said that he was entering a DJ competition. So we decided that I would enter the competition myself. At that point I didn’t’ know how to DJ, I had a month to learn. From that point I’ve never looked back, I wasn’t too bad but my performance was a far cry from the producer and dj I've become over the last 7 years. I'd always been in the club scene having been a podium dance fire performer stilt walker and aerialist so seemed like progression. Where does your main passion lie, modelling or music? I gave up modelling to be taken seriously in music. Modelling was not overly my thing but performing and djing are very much what I love to do, you get to have a personality and be a part of it all. Has djing taken you abroad? Djing takes me here there and everywhere! I've been to Egypt, India, Marbella, Dubai, Turkey and Ibiza too for a fair few seasons, and that’s naming but a few. Although people do think that what I do is much more glamorous than it actually is I think. I'm sure we see more of airports than countries, and there is never just one best place they all have special things I've remembered about them and love. 46

What type of music do you play? I predominantly produce House Music, I’ve had 3 releases and 2 singles. When I perform live I love to play multi genre so I enjoy playing house garage and RnB as every style of music creates a different reaction and feeling and I like watching the crowd and creating memories for people. Are you looking forward to performing at The Childsplay Liverpool Fashion Week? I can't wait to play Liverpool Fashion Week, it should be a really great event I know there is a buzz about it always and I'm looking forward to being a part of the team and seeing all the amazing brands. www.djsarahgiggle.co.uk twitter @sarahgiggle Facebook www.facebook.com/djsarahgiggle2 www.soundcloud.com/djsarahgiggle and Instagram sarahgiggle

NATIONAL

HONEY WEEK

It’s National Honey Week in October and to celebrate we’re taking a look at how honey is made. A honey bee will make on average about a twelfth of a teaspoon of honey in its lifetime, plus about a million flowers will have been visited to make one pound of honey. Honey bees are the only type of bee where the workers stay alive through winter. They cluster together in the hive to feed the queen and keep her warm, and so need a store of honey to consume through the winter, which they have collected over the summer months. Bees make honey from nectar. Honey bees can only fly out to gather nectar when it is warm enough, and not raining or too windy. In a good year honey bees will make far more honey than they need for themselves but because this has been the UK’s windiest year for two decades, beekeepers are not expecting a very good honey crop. Mark McLoughlin, bee inspector for the Wirral and Merseyside are said “It hasn’t been a good year for honey from what I have seen.” The British Beekeepers Association (BBKA) conducts an annual survey of its members and last year this recorded an average crop of honey of 32 lbs per hive; signs are that it will be much less in 2015.

For people who want to learn more about beekeeping, or to help the honey bee in other ways the BBKA has its “Adopt a Beehive” scheme where members of the public can adopt a beehive from one of ten different regions in the UK. www.adoptabeeive.co.uk It costs £30 plus p+p to Adopt a Beehive for one year, and in exchange you receive a welcome box of bee related goodies, including a jar of pure British honey and the Pocket Guide to the honey bee, as well as two updates throughout the year from your beehive and beekeeper. All the profits from the scheme are ploughed into research and education programmes to help save the honey bee, so it is a very positive scheme to be involved with. We have one free Adopt a Beehive set, plus this lovely gift set from Burts Bees, to give away to one lucky reader. Just tell us what honey is made from, and the first correct answer drawn from a hat on December 1st will receive the set.

Izzy BIzu MusIcal InspIratIon

Hello how are you this morning? I’ve just been listening to your new song Give me Love – which is great by the way – how did it come about? Great thanks. I was jamming in the studio making tracks for the album. It's one of the last ones I made and it's just came out how I was feeling on the day. What’s your creative process for writing? and what comes first for you? I write all the time, particularly on the train. I feel like I can focus more when I'm travelling. When I end up in the studio if people are playing chords I stick my lyric on or improvise and we take it from there to make an entire song. What was it that drove you towards music as a career? I used to write poetry and ended up turning them into songs. But I think the experience of moving out on my own inspired me to take it serious. Who has been your biggest music inspiration? Amy Winehouse, Billie Holiday & Sam Cooke. 50

Which bands or singers are you listening to at the moment? I love Leon Bridges, Tiggz Da Author & Alessi Brother. Check out the Alessi Brothers they are so cool. Your live performances are getting a lot of love – what excites you more, recording in the studio or performing live on stage? Oooh that's a hard one! I love them both equally. I can't decide sorry. What was performing at Glastonbury like? Amazing, messy and overwhelming in a super exciting way. And best of all natural. What’s the next goal? To have my own headline tour and I really want to make a jazz album. You are performing in Manchester this November - any plans for a Liverpool gig? At the moment nothing is scheduled for Liverpool but I'm sure I will be there in the near future. Please go to izzybizu.com to keep up to date on the live gigs. 51

t might seem a bit absurd in a month when 7,000 freshers alone will blow an estimated £2m in Liverpool's bars and clubs that some licensees are actually bemoaning the City Council's proposed new late night levy. The charge of between £299 and £4,400 per year would be aimed at the city’s 800 bars and retail outlets which operate between midnight and 6am; the time when most alcohol related crime takes place, especially at weekends, and therefore the time when our gallant boys and girls in blue are kept at their most 'bizzie'. Taking into account the recent government cuts to police and local council budgets, asking those businesses which profit directly from the late night sale of alcohol to make up some of the shortfall would seem to be the obvious solution, especially since initial estimates suggest that around 700

56

bars will only actually pay between £299 and £1,259, with only 20 being hit for the full £4,400. When you work out the actually weekly cost instead of the annual one it all seems even fairer and a very small price to pay for helping to keep the streets of Liverpool safe at night for locals, students and tourists alike. However, safeguards should be put in place to protect the interests of that great though increasingly rare and precious institution, the local pub, whose roll in the community is all too often ignored and undervalued until it is too late. Many people seem to forget that ‘Town’ is also, and always has been, a residential area as well as a commercial one and it is very easy to tell the difference between a place that serves a local community and one that exists solely as a means of extracting revenue from passing trade. Some places make far more work for the police and emergency services than others. Some places take out far more than they put into the local area, and the interests of the small local independents should be protected and preserved as a priority, even if it means ruffling a few cheap suits at the branded chains.

Tony moran, boxer Tony Moran claimed the MBC International cruiserweight title in emphatic fashion as he crushed Jimmy Campbell inside two rounds at the Olympia on Saturday 12th September. Moran put the disappointment of a failed Roy Jones Jr clash behind him as he destroyed the London-born American The former British and Commonwealth title challenger, who had time in the octagon as Rampage Jackson’s training partner was out of the blocks from the first second. 42-year-old Moran, who boasts a record now of 16 wins with six stoppages and six defeats. Moran is heralded in the city for his work with the homeless community. “My life for the past three years has been a bit of a nightmare and I’m trying to make a better life for myself. I’m a good man who has been in a bad situation I am now up on my feet and for me to be able to do the best I can for the people around me drives me on.” We can second this here at Bondmedia Agency as Tony was one of the nicest and most humble men we have ever met when we spent some time with him earlier in the month. Congratulations pal and keep up the great work.

tough times never last tough people do

W

e are all more capable of dealing with adversity than we give ourselves credit for. You are more capable of dealing with adversity than you give yourself credit for. When things are going really well we don’t expect it to be like that forever so how come we feel that the tough will go on forever? Sometimes we have just got to tough it out and know that whatever we are dealing with will pass. It will change. Sometimes when we are feeling low, out of control, venerable, exposed or sad. These feelings are massive signals that we need to change something. If we always do the same thing the chances are we are always going to get the same or similar results. Action cures fear. So the first thing I would absolutely recommend, is that you write down on paper what the issue is, be specific, be clear and be as accurate as you can be. Confide in a friend or find someone who is prepared to listen to the issue. One of the main challenges when we are down and saddened, is that we feel we have no choices and few options, the reality is that there are always options. When we are down, we focus on the problem and magnify it in our minds. Write a list, or discuss all your options no matter how ludicrous they seem. It’s options you’re looking for 5-10-15 possible options, and yes doing nothing is an option. The mere fact you now have those options and choices will make you feel lighter and more capable of resolution. There are four different types of challenge. 1. A brick wall, it’s not changeable - we have to change our thinking towards this, when we change our thinking the problem/challenge changes. 2. A partition wall, this will take more effort than you alone may have so you need support to

negotiate and climb over this challenge. 3. A paper wall, this is something that’s going to take action from you, action to break through this thin veneer wall. 4. This is a mind set and actually isn’t a wall at all but will take a new focus. This could be old habits that are holding us back. Write down your challenges and identify what type of wall it is. Sit down and write out your possible solutions then make your choice of what you’re going to do. Don’t forget, Action cures Fear. Start now, take action and re establish yourself as the only person than controls you, controls how you feel, and what you do. Talk with someone and look at the possible solutions. Tough times never last, tough people do. You really are the master of your destiny and the challenges and even if the issues that you are dealing with are huge right now, at some point you may look back and see the benefits and the reason you had to deal with it or them. The lessons you learn by dealing with the things that are happening now, you will be better equipped to deal and cope with the bigger and better things in the future. If you require support or questions answering on this or anyone subject I have written about, please contact me via email darren@dasala.co.uk or follow me on twitter @dasalaldarren 59

CRAIG phillips- DIYHello Lifestyle Readers, I was delighted to return as host of the prestigious ECHO Pride of Merseyside Awards at the Titanic Hotel’s Rum Warehouse. It was an honour to have the opportunity to personally congratulate all the people who have contributed so much to our city, with categories spanning everything from Courage to Community Group, Sports Team to Fundraising. The winner of the evening’s top prize was Andrew Rogerson, who is currently halfway through an incredible 10,000-mile bike ride from China to Liverpool to raise money for the Anthony Nolan blood cancer charity. He began fundraising after his friend’s young son was diagnosed with blood cancer and found a donor through the charity – a truly inspiring story, I’m sure you’ll agree. Speaking of inspirational people, I also had the honour of presenting the Volunteer of the Year prize at the Birmingham Sports Awards alongside none other than Nigel Mansell CBE. Without doubt, Nigel is a British sporting legend and I’m sure many of you remember with fondness his incredible driving ability and bravery that made him such an amazing World Champion. As always, I’ll also be on Ideal World demonstrating products from paint-spraying specialists Wagner. Tune in if you can! As usual, I’ve included my monthly DIY tip for you to make the most of. Make sure to check out the Silverline Tools YouTube channel to see some of my ‘how to’ guides for common DIY jobs and you can see me in action!

All the best,

Craig. 62

FITTING FLOATING SHELVES Materials

• Floating shelves kit with bracket • Plugs and screws

Tools

18v drill driver 18v SDS hammer action drill 8mm masonry drill bit Screw driver bit Pencil Wire/pipe detector

Fitting floating shelves is a very clever way of having nice designer shelving without seeing any brackets or screws as the bracket is hidden inside the body of the shelf itself. To begin, remove the hidden bracket from the centre of the shelf, offer the bracket up to the wall and mark the centre hole through the bracket. Top tip:- Use a wire detector to check the wall doesn’t have any electric cables behind before drilling. Drill and plug the first hole using an 18v hammer action drill, use an 8mm masonry drill bit and an 8mm raw plug, Top tip:- drive the first screw in only half way so you can mark the wall where the other holes are to be drilled then turn the bracket to the drill wall, this avoids removing the bracket off the wall and it guarantees all 5 holes in the bracket will line up to the holes you drill into your wall. Drill all 5 screws firmly fixing the bracket to the wall, slide the shelf over the bracket losing site of the bracket. Then you may have a couple of small screws to fix from beneath, this will stop it sliding off. You now have a new stylish shelf ready to use.

october t’s inevitable when you work in the public eye that you are going to get criticism, much of which I ignore. It’s only human nature to want to give an opinion and everyone loves to gossip. But when I find my business decisions being discussed in a negative way by a group of youngsters not much older than my children then I think enough is enough. In six years of running Liverpool Fashion Week the event has grown in reputation- designers from USA, Europe and Asia have travelled to Liverpool to participate. It's featured in Drapers, Harpers Bazaar plus fashion mags such as Grazia and Look. Top fashion journalists such as Elizabeth Jones have attended. Photojournalists from Reuters, the biggest news agency in the world, report on it. I attract sponsors from all over the UK. High street brands and independent designers alike put their trust in me to put on a show to the highest possible standard, which includes the scouting of models, one recently was signed to Loreal, another was signed to Dorothy Perkins a few years ago and last year one was asked back to test shoot for La Redoute. I have in excess of 400 model applications to in which I select 25 models. I know what I am looking for and I know what the industry and the fashion houses expect. The photos have to look impressive in order for them to be published

around the world. For those who feel the need to slate me on social media for not selecting them I make no apologies. They need to learn to take rejection because this industry is full of it. My loyalty is to the brand and to the reputation of the show as an international fashion platform. Just because their parents tell them they are beautiful, and they most probably are in some ways, that doesn't make them a model in my shows. So if a guy comes to me to model and is shorter than the women in my shows, I cannot put him in my line up, it will look ridiculous for both himself and for the show as a whole. I know what I am doing… and for those that don’t believe me, take it from the people who participate. An unknown designer from London who showcased in Manchester is featuring in this month’s edition of Vogue. Another team member has gone to New York. I can open doors for people in the fashion industry but also can slam them shut as well. That’s fashion, darling. Stay stylish and hope to see you all at The Childsplay Clothing Liverpool Fashion Week in association with The London College of Style. It’s going to our best line up get. Stay stylish,

Amanda Moss
