THE SECOND COMING OF SJP

S A R AH JESSICA PARKER INTERVIEW

she may be best known for playing carefree Carrie Bradshaw on sex and the City, but as we enter the second season of her compelling show Divorce, it becomes clear there is more to sarah Jessica Parker than Manolos and Cosmopolitans, as she reveals why it’s time to put the past to bed. divorce is said to be the most bitter and destabilising event one can endure. For Sarah Jessica Parker, despite being happily married to matthew Broderick for 20 years, she has learnt enough from friends' breakups – not to mention that of her parents’ – to know that no one really understands it until them experience it themselves. Season One of the HBO series divorce, which she co-produces, gave audiences a gruelling and stark perspective on how Frances (Parker) and Robert (Thomas Haden Church) deal with the disintegration of their marriage. That led Parker and the new series showrunner Jenny Blick to give a somewhat more optimistic tone to Season Two's postdivorce landscape.

in New York City together with their three children, son James, 15, and twin eight-year-old daughters marion and Tabitha, born via a surrogate mother does admit that certain situations involving kids did ring true. “Parenting is always a challenge and there will be many times where your children don't always appreciate your decisions,” she says with a knowing smile.

class angst and emotional introspection to satisfy viewers who pine for the Nineties hit show. However, the character played by Parker couldn’t be more different and the actress hopes audiences appreciate her desire to explore a breadth of roles.  “I think it took time for people to make the adjustment to seeing me as this very different kind of woman. Some people might have missed the jubilant nature of Carrie and have been like, ‘(Frances) is unlikable. You shouldn't play someone who's not likable,’” she reveals.

“Frances was looking to liberate herself but now she's facing the reality of what her life is like as a new business owner and still having to do most of the parenting by herself,” Parker says. “Being single has meant becoming responsible for major financial decisions she's never faced before and also justifying herself to her children who don't agree with a lot of her decisions. Things haven't really gotten any easier for her.”

“my response is that is that I'm an actor, and I always want to play people who are new and different to me. I shouldn't worry about likability but about portraying a woman who is very real and complex. Her life is messy like that of most people and we showed her making good and bad decisions. But I think that's much more enlightening and powerful to present someone in that light because it's reflective of the way people really are in life.”

In many ways it is easy to view divorce as the natural successor to Sex and the City. Set in Westchester, a wealthy suburban enclave of New York City, there is still plenty of glamour, middle

She is also quick to point out that neither the character nor situation bear any resemblance to her real life. Though the 52-yearold fashion icon - who lives with her husband matthew Broderick

Of course, fiction is rarely ever a reflection of real life, and there has been no better example of this than the very public ‘spat’ between Parker and her ex SATC co-star Kim Cattrall, which began when Parker offered condolences via Instagram following the tragic death of Cattrall’s brother, Chris. Cattrall’s scathing reply suggested the pair had never been friends, even when they were colleagues, accusing Parker of exploiting their tragedy in order to restore her 'nice girl' persona’. A sentiment which is miles away from their onscreen comradery.  Regardless of the truth behind the claims, it seems unlikely that Parker will be drawn into any kind of ongoing feud, as she rarely courts the press and is one of our more private superstars. That is not the only way in which she is an anomaly, having achieved the rare feat of four decades of consistent work in showbusiness with barely a whiff of scandal around her. But arguably the biggest mystery of all, is how she and Broderick have maintained such a strong marriage in the public eye. So, what is her secret?  I'm very lucky that I met a man who is funny, witty, intelligent, and sensitive. He always makes me laugh more than anyone else and we never get bored together.” she says gleefully, adding: “He's a gentleman and a good catch, as my mother would say!”

busy, even at 6pm on a cold Tuesday night. The early bird menu is ÂŁ13.95 per person for 3 course set meal. You do have a various choice of dishes from each of the 3 options of soups, starters and main course Chy is a modern Chinese restaurant and is well positioned in central Liverpool to take advantage of their pre theatre set menu. We went along with our two eldest children. The stylish and attractive interior with chrome, sharp lighting against a black furnished backdrop as opposed to Bonsai trees and the odd paper dragons set Chy apart from other Chinese restaurants in the city and we settled down to dinner. Other diners agreed it was extremely

I chose my favourite dish, the Hot and Sour soup which was very spicy and set my soul on fire for the evening. Everyone else enjoyed Chicken and Sweetcorn soup with prawn crackers and judging by the bowls which were swiftly emptied, it was a fine choice. We all shared traditional starters of barbecue ribs, spring rolls and salt and pepper chicken wings. Everyone has a favourite Chinese dish and we all know what most of these dishes taste like, but some are better

than others. I can honestly say that this was one of the finest Chinese meals we have experienced for quite some time. With about 12 options for a main, Chicken Curry was my choice, and my family had Crispy Shredded Chicken in Chilli Sauce and the Char Siu Chow Mein. Filled with contentment and warmed up from a delicious meal, we stepped into the crisp, cold night on our way to the theatre. I highly recommend Chy and look forward to coming again soon for a date night to try the rest of their superb extensive menu.

FLORIDIAN CARTOONIST TONY SULLIVAN JOINS LIFESTYLE MAGAZINE WITH HIS QUIRKY DRAWINGS. WE CAUGHT UP WITH THE ARTIST ON THE SUNNY SIDE OF THE WORLD….

My first name is James my

middle name is Tony. The reason why I use Tony is because me and my father both have the same first name. So when mom called out for James we both turned around. So she decided to call me Tony.  I mostly use Tony on all my work. my mom died of cancer so somehow it makes me feel closer to her, and it sounds cool.

How did you hear about lifestyle magazine? I heard about Lifestyle through a search on the internet. How did you become a cartoonist? Ever since I was young I always love to draw, it started with the cartoons that came on TV. I was fascinated with Batman 16

Superman and others so I decided to create my own. When I got older and got into the workforce I met some interesting unbelievable characters, as we all do. And I said to myself I wonder what they would be like in my own cartoon world, especially some of my bosses at the time. So I took bits and pieces of their personalities put them into my imagination blender, turned it on high and out came the cartoons, goodness, without the mess. What do you love about your job? Being a cartoonist is freedom to express your opinion, join the conversation, and make people laugh what's not to love about that? What cartoons did you grow up with? Let's see, there are so many just to name a few. Superman, Batman, Bugs Bunny daffy duck, I know I'm dating myself these are the classics. Then you have The Far Side, mother Goose and Grimm. Garfield. Great Cartoons that where ahead of their time. Situations in everyday life, for example when someone sneezes and doesn't cover their mouth and something flies out and stick to the wall. To me that's cartoon material hands down, to others

that sounds like a health hazard. But what makes this life situation funny is when everyone sees this green  blob sticking to the wall and no one says anything except the 5 year old girl says to her mother "Why is that man so nasty didn't his mother teach him some manners.” Now that's the kind of cartoon I would create. Wait I think I just did. What satisfaction do you get from drawing? The reaction. When they have that surprise look and laugh out loud there is nothing like it. Tell us about a typical day in your life I first thank God for another day of life, I know he has a sense of humor because he created me. Get a cup of tea or coffee and shake the cobwebs out of the old brain. Check the world for creative content and share my story to anyone who would listen.

A P U B L I C C O N S U L TAT I O N O N THE FUTURE OF LIVERPOOL’S HISTORIC WILLIAMSON S Q U A R E I S N O W U N D E RWAY

Liverpool City Council together with Liverpool BId Company and the Everyman & Playhouse launched it with a debate on how to reimagine and revitalise the public square The consultation, which will run until monday 30 April, has been designed as “an open conversation” and will ask the public and businesses to provide suggestions and ideas on how best to breathe new life into the open space – both during the day and the evening. The square, which was initially laid out in 1745 and became pedestrianised more than 20 years ago, was last upgraded in 2004 with a £5.75m public realm programme introducing new seating, planting and a fountain. Since then, more than £150m has been invested in the surrounding areas and with various changes to the city centre it has left the square feeling disconnected. despite enjoying high footfall, it is used more as a through route to other areas rather than a gathering place. The consultation is also responding

to the Liverpool City Centre Strategic Investment Framework which set out a 15-year blueprint to transform and revitalise the city centre through major investment and regeneration projects with Williamson Square identified as a key priority. A report to the city council’s Cabinet on the day of the consultation launch has identified four key themes to steer the debate on the future direction of the square, which also lies within the buffer zone of Liverpool’s World Heritage Site. They are: 1. Re-imagine the square’s potential – both day and night. 2. Re-animate the square with a revitalised Playhouse Theatre at its heart. 3. Re-connect the square to its surrounding areas. 4. Re-engage the public and surrounding businesses with an imaginative events programme and inspirational use of space. These “cornerstone principles” are underpinned by six objectives to: 1. Bring all the partners and players together to create a new vision. 2. Provide a vibrant cultural leisure destination. 3. make the square a catalyst for the regeneration of the wider area. 4. market the square as a visitor attraction.

5. make better connections and access. 6. Create a square that is beautiful and environmentally sustainable The cabinet report also recommends that mechanisms be created for securing funding for a regeneration strategy and specific development opportunities, in the short, medium and long-term. Councillor Nick Small, Assistant mayor of Liverpool, who will launch the debate next Friday, said: “Williamson Square is one of Liverpool’s main public open spaces and should be a vibrant gathering place but over the past decade has for various reasons lost its way and sense of purpose. “This debate and public consultation is an ideal opportunity to have an honest conversation which, with the calibre of the major partners involved and the support of the people of Liverpool, I’ve no doubt will reset the play button and lead to some positive action – both in the short and long term. “Liverpool city centre has made phenomenal progress over the past decade, the time has now come for Williamson Square to join the party and live up to its potential as a dynamic public space the city can be proud of.”

DARREN VISION S P R I N G   C L E A N

You know those key moments in business ... I mean the ones you can plan for, not the unexpected ones ... well, there’s one looming on the horizon right now.  I’m talking about the end of the financial year ... so it’s probably time to think about a bit of spring cleaning. I’ve only got involved with the ‘real’ spring cleaning in my own house once ... and it’s complicated.  did you know there’s special stuff to make your sink shiny ... which is different from the ‘power and shine’ stuff that contains Orange Oil, yes really. But wait ... please don’t use these on your floor ... there’s a special cleaner for the floor and listen to this ... it needs no rinsing and it has a fresh fragrance.  Take special care with your Hob though, you need a cleaner that removes burnt on food ... and heaven forbid you use any of these on your windows!  Windows have their own technology ... 20

guaranteed to be streak free. I’ve bought every type of cleaner known to man and I thought it was a sound investment ... then I find out that some smarty pants has invented a multi-surface cleaner that does the job of them all.  Well, mild panic spread throughout my house when I found this out ... which then changed to full on panic when the tried and tested method of good old fashioned soap and water was mentioned (with added elbow grease) ... and I’m only talking about the kitchen. Pretty much everything is complicated nowadays ... which means it needs thinking about ... and housekeeping your business processes needs some thinking time too ... sometimes a bit of a review allows you to streamline your business practices ... maybe chuck out an old process ... or possibly bring back an old process. Yes, I said bring back an old

process ... what if your new one is over-engineered and way too complicated ... is too unwieldy ... too admin heavy ... not customer friendly.  What if the old process worked better?   We’re not talking about Project management or Change management here ... just some common sense spring cleaning ... if all the new stuff is right for your business then embrace it, make it work for you and enjoy it ... but if soap and water still does the job then maybe you stick with that ... but at least spend some time looking at what works and what doesn’t ... it could make your working day easier in the long run. We all know the old phrase “if you always do what you’ve always done, you’ll always get what you always got”.  Just treat yourself to some thinking time. NEW PARTNERSHIP CHAMPIONS COUNSELLING FOR BEREAVED PEOPLE The British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP) and Cruse Bereavement Care (Cruse) have formed a strategic partnership to promote the benefits of counselling for people who struggle to cope following the death of someone close to them. The two organisations, inspired by a shared commitment to social justice, aim to improve access to quality counselling for bereaved people by raising standards and improving service delivery nationwide. debbie Kerslake, Chief Executive of Cruse, said: “Bereavement is the most common devastating experience anyone is ever likely to face in their lives. The death of someone close can have a profound impact on physical and mental health and yet far too often this fails to be recognised and people are left isolated and unsupported. Cruse and BACP share values and a strong commitment to ensuring access to the highest quality of care and support whenever and wherever that support is needed.  “We believe that by bringing our understanding, knowledge and skills together we can enhance our capability to achieve shared interests including enhancing our influence. We look forward to working together to driving forward the rights of bereaved children, young people and adults, improving their access to those with counselling skills and setting standards so that all those delivering this support have the appropriate training and skills to practice.”    A key aim of the new partnership is to align training and standards across the two organisations and

to promote these standards to practitioners, employers and the public through joint campaigning. One element of this vital project will be the creation of resources and CPd to support counsellors and counselling skills users who work with bereaved people. dr Hadyn Williams, Chief Executive of BACP, said: “This pioneering collaboration will allow us to better promote the positive impact that counselling can have on the lives of those who have lost someone close to them and need extra support. As well as leading to a better understanding of how counselling can help, it will improve access to counselling for those who need it. In addition, the more consistent standards of practice we plan to introduce will give people confidence that the counselling professional they talk to has the training, skills and experience to be able to help them. “Our partnership with Cruse has particular resonance for us at BACP because it also underlines our commitment to improving access to counselling for older people. Our research suggests that, while older people can benefit greatly from counselling and are eager to do so, they often find accessing counselling difficult. Alongside the broader benefits of our partnership with Cruse, this is a specific concern we hope to be able to address.”

RAY QUINN JOINS THE 2018 UK TOUR OF BRAND NEW STAGE MUSICAL

R E M M U S HOLIDAY

26

Based on the iconic 1960’s film of the same name, starring Cliff Richard and The Shadows, Summer Holidaywill include all of the number one hits from the movie, plus some additional Cliff Richard classics.

‘doing it my Way’ entering the charts at Number 1, and quickly gaining platinum status. Ray is perhaps best known of late for ‘doing the double’ on ITV1’s hugely successful show dancing on Ice, winning for the first time in 2009, and then again on dancing on Ice: Champion of Champions in 2014. Ray’s theatre credits include danny zuko in Grease (West End), dirty dancing (West End), Legally Blonde (UK Tour) and most recently, The Wedding Singer (UK Tour).

B rand new stage musical Summer Holiday is set to tour the UK from may 2018, with the famous red double-decker bus making its first stop at the Liverpool Empire on Tuesday 8th may, the show also visits Chester Storyhouse from Tuesday 11th September.

Summer Holiday tells the story

Taking on the lead role of don made famous by Cliff Richard, is singer-songwriter Ray Quinn. Ray shot to fame as the runner-up in ITV1’s The X Factor in 2006. This spurned a career in both music and of late musicals, with his debut album

of don and his fellow London Transport mechanics as they journey together in a red double-decker bus through Paris, the Alps, Italy and Greece. Along the way they pick up a girl singing group and a young American pop star who is on the run from her domineering mother! This hit - filled musical features many of 1960’s biggest songs including In the Country, Summer Holiday,Travellin’ Light, Bachelor Boy, move It, Living doll, The Young Ones and On the Beach.

I’m honoured to have been asked to play the lead role of Don, in Summer Holiday - it’s an iconic part made famous by Cliff Richard and I hope I can do it justice. I can’t wait to get singing those songs!.. It was my Nan’s favourite film when she was younger - she loved Cliff and I think we still have all the old vinyl records somewhere.

Two’s A House Through Time which focused on 62 Falkner Street with crews filming in and around the city for five months. There is a huge amount of anticipation around City and The City which stars homegrown TV star david morrissey and is due to hit the small screen later this year.

AN ACTION PACKED YEAR FOR REGION’S FILM INDUSTRY lIvERPOOl is taking a starring role on silver and small screens across the world as filming in the city is at an all-time high. The Liverpool Film Office recorded its busiest ever year in 2017 with 289 film and TV projects shot here, resulting in a massive 1,359 filming days which generated a £11.1million boost to the local economy. Reflecting international trends, there has been increase in production companies heading to the city to film content which was pushed out through online channels. It was also noted that in 2017, projects stayed longer on location in the city. Productions included the BAFTA nominated Film Stars don’t die in Liverpool which focused on the life of Hollywood leading lady Gloria Graeme and starred Annette Bening and Jamie Bell, filming in and around Rundle Road in Aigburth as well as using Princes Street to double as New York. BBC Two’s award winningPeaky Blinders returned for its fourth series, using Crosby Beach as one of several merseyside locations, and Liverpool Women’s Hospital welcomed back popular Channel 4 documentary One Born Every minute for its tenth series. 2017 also saw international Emmy nominated Broken starring Sean Bean and Anna Friel, filmed in Admiral Street and in various locations in Sefton. And currently garnering positive reviews is BBC 28

Other highlights included Tolkien – a biopic featuring Nicholas Hoult and Lily Collins, a new Sky1 seriesBulletproof with Noel Clarke and Ashley Walters, ITV’s Timewasters and a special Channel 4 documentary on the city council’s pioneering £1 houses scheme which will be aired in the next couple of months. Songs of Praise, Strictly Come dancing, The X Factor, The Real Housewives of Cheshire, The One Show, the Worst Witch series, Extreme Cake makers and The Voice also filmed in the city last year. Assistant mayor and Cabinet member responsible for the Film Office, Councillor Wendy Simon, said: “For many years Liverpool has been one of the UK’s most filmed locations outside of London, and it’s fantastic to see that the city retains that appeal with productions returning to the city time and time again. “This city provides the perfect backdrop for directors – there are so many diverse and stunning locations on offer and Liverpool can be transformed into different destinations – whether it be New York, London or Eastern Europe – its appeal is endless. “The calibre of productions coming here is incredible with so many of them receiving rave reviews and then go on to be a well-known name on the awards circuit. “A huge amount of credit should be given to the small team which make up the Liverpool Film Office – their unrivalled knowledge of the city and willingness to go above and beyond has resulted in fantastic relationships being developed between the city council and the film industry.  “It’s an exciting time for the city and I look forward to seeing what other

TV and film gems head to Liverpool in 2018.” Sarada mcdermott Tolkien coproducer said: “Liverpool was perfect location to film key scenes for our production. The area around St George’s Hall provided us with the period shots we needed, and the space allowed us to create a brand new set to meet our needs. The team at the Film Office were fantastic and I’d have no hesitation in returning to the city again to film.” Early indications show 2018 is going to be yet another strong year for the city with the hotly anticipated TV adaption of War of The Worlds by mammoth Screen for BBC already confirmed to film later in the spring.   Film Office manager Lynn Saunders, said: “We are delighted that Liverpool remains such a pivotal player in the film industry and we are committed to putting plans in place to ensure production levels remain buoyant. “A huge amount of work goes into attracting production companies to merseyside, and then working with them in the run up to, during and post filming to make sure all aspects run as smoothly as possible and they have a positive experience of the city.   “Never a city to rest on its laurels – we are developing a five year, city region wide plan to see how we can make the most of the sector and how we  can maintain and improve investment levels and the number of jobs created as a result of production companies heading to the area. “Plans for our own film studios are developing which means we’ll be able to meet the demand for film and production facilities which we simply cannot meet at the moment due to capacity issues. “It’s an exciting time for the city region and I look forward to another busy year for the team.”

always in touch. What do you love about the film? It’s a throwback to the time when wrestling on TV was a big deal, we all loved Big daddy and those  wrestling stars. It’s quite nostalgic and a throwback to those times. It’s a lovely feel good British comedy. With everything happening in the country at the moment, people are feeling polarised, with Brexit and inadequate leadership. This is a film to bring people together and make them laugh We miss Mount Pleasant Yes so do I, everyone loved it, it was a lovely gig, I would have enjoyed doing that until I was old and grey. Unfortunately we don’t make the decisions on these matters. What’s the hardest thing about being an actor? It’s feast or famine, you are always waiting for the phone to ring, for that next job offer.  It can be frustrating at times and you have to have a thick skin to take a lot of “no”s. I was lucky enough to get a call from dan Hubbard the director on this film who was a fan of Phoenix Nights and set up a meeting. We chatted, we got on really well and I was offered the part.

Which can only mean one thing … Easter is just around the corner and it’s time once more to grab a Fairy outfit and do Easter Panto! I love the fact I spend more of my time dressed as a fairy than in normal clothing – showering the Epstein Theatre with glitter and fairydust and returning after a fabulous Christmas with Lee Kelly and LHK Productions for Jack and the Beanstalk and working with another amazing cast including Ray Quinn. Ray and I have worked together in panto before and I know that as well as a fantastic show – there will be lots of laughs along the way! (http://www.epsteinliverpool.co. uk/events/jack-and-thebeanstalk/). Having had no time off from November, my brother Peter, his partner Chris and our friend Tracey surprised me and booked for me to go to Benidorm for 3 nights in January – typical Simmo style … threw my things in a hand luggage case and jumped on a 30

BEING POSITIVE, NOT PERFECT

I’ve been going to a mindfulness course with the NHS every Friday to add to my knowledge of healing ourselves using more of our brain power and wow its incredible what our brain can help us with. For example if we focus on bad things, we

I think it’s time to embrace our inner fun loving person. Yes, I do mean go and hug a tree (I like the ones in Jamaica Street, particularly when some clever person knitted them little coats – they are my favourites) or if you really feel like taking in the air pop over to Sefton park – there literally is, a tree for everyone there. Judy dench listens to trees and I was in awe and astonishment that they make gurgling noises as they drink. (Which I do too !!! so that makes me rather akin to a tree) Remember in school dance we had to be a tree? Oh I loved being a tree but just didn’t have enough fingers, toes or limbs to give it justice. I wanted to root mine and have a beautiful array of branches that reached out in perfect symmetry. But I gave it my best shot anyway. I’m sure you did too.

GILL FELL WARNING! I am addicted to being up beat so…. deep breath….. and smile and be happier.

tell you a bit more about mindfulness and meditation and give you an insight into how I manage to stay sane in a completely bonkers way. A bit of a contradiction you say? Sane and Bonkers surely are not in the same category in the Self Help Section of Waterstones? – I really like their coffee shop by the way. It makes me feel like learning stuff, not just chatting wham with whoever I have met up with there. It’s like sitting in the actual font of knowledge and it’s funny to hear people laugh out loud randomly in the comedy section.

When I was diagnosed with Incurable C…….. (lets call it C Beans) in my liver, I was given a palliative nurse to “help” me deal with the fact that I had limited time to live. She was a sweet girl but she insisted that I was in denial – but she would ring me on a Friday evening at 4.30 ish I must have been her last call of the week and I would really make an effort to dismiss her words and give her a little boost up for the weekend. What a job she has, my heart went out to her. We can all up lift someone, if we give away a smile to a homeless person and buy them a tea or coffee, give them some inspiration directly and the best thing to tell them to try to do is. Think Better Thoughts That’s all I’m allowed for now. But next month we can talk more about re-training your brain to think better thoughts. In the meantime I’m starting a “GLOBAL UP THINKING” Campaign…..  Start now by raising the energy behind your thoughts…….  love from me to you Gill Fell Gillfell.com

Hello march! So I promise to

tend to feel low and more bad things appear (I call this Law of Attraction) but if you recognise that you are in a bad thinking place then you can consciously adjust the way you are thinking. You have to use your own brain power to focus on something else. I use nature a lot, I look at the detail of the leaf on the tree or the tree itself, how the branches are formed the bark, the moss growing on it. So simple but you cannot stress whilst you are super focussed on something good. Give it a try. Let me know how you get on.

I think it’s time to embrace our inner fun loving person

DID YOu KNOW? In the UK mothering Sunday originally began as a celebration for Christians to visit their mother Church. Gradually it evolved into children celebrating their mothers. The date is linked to Easter and falls on the fourth Sunday of Lent. In the USA mother’s day was created in 1914 thanks to campaigns’ groups established during the Cicl war. Anna Jarvis headed a campaign to create mother’s day to honour the memory of her own mother. The annual holiday is held on the second Sunday in may

Each and every InScents candle we sell, every new product we launch, in fact, pretty much everything we do here at InScents is informed and driven by our history. Our owners, Hayes and Finch went into business in Old Leeds Street, Liverpool way back in 1882. Our knowledge and the expertise we bring to each carefully designed and manufactured candle comes from the 135 year history of our company. #candleaddicts #homeofcandles

rest. my idea would lead me to a Professional certificate in 3d Architecture with Autodesk which would allow my clients to see the project through 3d visuals and architectural plans before they had started the building and decoration work.“ To date his projects have given him the chance to work on several projects in Europe, Egypt and across the middle East affording me the experience and cultural knowledge needed to incorporate into future projects. membership to the Chartered Institute of Architectural Technologist (CIAT) & The Society of British & International Interior design (BSId) adds the reassurance and confidence a client requires when employing a quality interior designer.

5 minutes with Paul…..

D esigner Paul O’Hare began his career as an apprentice painter and decorator before setting up his own business with small grant in the 1990s. A chance phone call from a London casting agent changed his life. They asked him to take part in a new programme (FAKING IT) which need me go to London and try and become an artist in just one month He said  "I would need to produce art and then exhibit it to the public in the show to be judged alongside real artist to see if the panel of judges including (Tate magazine) could find the faker. I thought to myself great publicity for my new shop. So, I agreed to take part and on the 5th Jan 2001, 44

I packed my bags and drove down to London. The TV crew exposed me to the craziest things I had ever seen including people cutting themselves and bleeding on canvas in the name of ART! The producers were trying everything to make me portray the art world in a bad light. What they didn’t bank on was me embracing the work and even falling in love with every aspect of the process, the life the work and the culture." Returning to Liverpool after winning the show Paul began to look around for more creative interior challenges. He said: “I wanted ways to make my company stand out from the

What is your greatest achievement in your designs to date The West Tower Liverpool is high up in my top projects the client was very understanding of the design process and clear in the brief… they new what the word quality meant and were happy to go with my choices. The opulence of the project and location of the site made the inspiration flow.

What inspires you when you start a project? The fact that the space needs help to breath and the architecture is giving. I get excited by the what could be and the space seams to speak to me. I love that by moving a wall the dynamic of the space changes informing the next stage of design. This all happens even before I get to the quality finishes of the interiors - not to mention the affect that lighting creates. What is your ultimate dream build? The ultimate build would be creating luxury dwellings in New York. The place has had a draw

for me ever since I first visited 15 years ago. The 3d visuals I create to show my clients the finished job before we start the work are much sort after across the pond and clients are paying a small fortune for the services. Along with being really applicative of the creative process. You are always trying to improve and reinvent yourself, is this the secret to your success? I think that to survive in the current market you need to diversify. Over the years I have worn many hats but never straying to far away from my core values of giving the customer a fantastic service

and experience. From my days as a decorator through into interior design and onto architecture was a natural process and It never felt anything other than the next stage of my career. I now can offer a full turn key service from conception to completion and that’s because of the 35 years’ experience I bring to every project I haven’t lost my ambition one little bit and can see myself continuing to grow and evolve.

SPRING/ SUMMER WINDOW BLINDS Looking for a fresh spring/summer home update? We asked the interiors experts at three leading window dressing companies for their ideas on the best window coverings to get homes ready for the warmer weather.  Shutterly Fabulous for Summer mike Stephen, design director at Apollo Blinds explains why shutters are fast becoming one of the bestselling types of window dressings.  “There’s no denying the effortless style and versatility of window shutters,” says mike. “With insulating, sun-blocking and added security benefits, they’re a fantastic way to update homes for the summertime. during the summer months, many homeowners want to open up ground floor rooms to ‘let the outdoors in’.  Our shutters can be fitted on a tracking system, so they can be folded back on themselves to save space and for seamless integration with gardens.   “Shutters needn’t be white or cream either, in fact, we’re seeing increasing demand for coloured shutters to coordinate or make a statement at windows.  We even have a ‘custom colour’ facility so homeowners can match the colour of their shutter colour to any

sample.” Prices start at £342 per square metre for hardwood shutters from Apollo Blinds. Floral Blinds in Bloom  Lorna mcAleer, interiors expert at Style Studio tips floral blinds as a key look for homes in 2018.  “From dainty daisies to large blousy blooms, floral window blinds are ideal update for spring. Pick large scale, bountiful blooms like peonies, hydrangeas and roses in soft pink, lemon and peach colourways for an on-trend look in 2018. Alternatively, powder blue or pastel blue backgrounds offer an invigorating pick-me-up after winter as blue is such a bright and energising colour.   “Homeowners who are nervous about introducing a new look to homes, especially a bold floral design or a colour that takes them out of their comfort zone, can use our online tool design Space to visualise how floral blinds will look in different styles of rooms.” Visit www.stylestudio.co.uk for information on stockists.

Cool Conservatory Blinds Kirsty Hunt, spokeswoman for duette® blinds explains the yearround benefits of energy saving window blinds in the conservatory.  “A conservatory is one of the most aesthetically pleasing rooms within a home in summertime, with natural light in abundance and beautiful uninterrupted views of the outdoors. However, the combination of expanses of glass with sunshine pouring in and high temperatures can make this beautiful room uncomfortably warm.” “Conservatories can suffer from something similar to the ‘greenhouse effect’, where heat radiates into the window, diffuses, and cannot escape again, causing the area inside to become stifling. And in some cases, rendering the room unusable at certain times of the year.” “due to their honeycomb structure, combined with an innovative coating on the window-facing side of the blind, duette® blinds have heatreflecting qualities. In fact, independent tests have shown that they can reflect up to 78% of the sun’s warmth. They also block up to 99% of UV rays, which helps to protect furniture and wallpaper from fading, keeping them looking newer for longer. duette® blinds are available in an array of gorgeous colours for spring – visit www.duette.co.uk or www.apollo-blinds.co.uk for more information.

THE LAWNS RESTAURANT THORNTON HALL HOTEL & SPA, NESTON RD, THORNTON HOUGH, WIRRAL CH63 1JF

REVIEW BY  Amanda moss For an exquisite treat, a special occasion or just to celebrate some “me-time”, there’s no better place that a drive to Thornton Hall Hotel & Spa. Set in gorgeous green gardens in the beautiful village of Neston, it’s a tranquil place to let it all go as you enjoy the first class hospitality of the staff. my husband and I celebrated the kids being in school as we enjoyed a leisurely lunch in the very capable hands of maitre’de, John Tu. While we were treated to a beautiful five course lunch (I will come to that in a minute) guests on the next table enjoyed an afternoon tea and for a moment I thought I had selected the wrong choice, judging by the beautiful tray of cakes and sanchwiches delivered to our neighbours! I was not left disappointed for long. Our meal was beyond expectations, just an explosion of taste, textures and gorgeous fine dining set in lustrous room that I wanted to move into permanently. To start with  I selected the home smoked salmi mi cuit, lemongrass guerre blanc with dill and raisin puree. We shared a side of  proper

chips with hollandaise sauce and chargrilled tender stem broccoli. Simon chose the mushroom parfait with toasted brioche and truffle butter. While we waited for this to be served we were presented with a board of freshly baked loaves. As someone who could live entirely on bread, this was a welcome starter but nothing like I had tasted before. I wanted to whisk the chef away with me there and then. The starter was delicious and confusing. How can so many tastes be experience on one fork? It was like the everlasting gobstopper in  Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.  In between starters and mains we were treated to a lemongrass mousse to clean our mouths and settle our tastebuds so by the time the main course came I was comfortably full. I always opt for steak and chips but decided to be adventurous and opted for he seedy carver duck breast and pastille, shitake mushrooms, kohlrabi. Simon chose the monkfish with

“fabada”, a spanish bean stew with chorizo and clams.  By the the time by plate was cleared I had absolutely no room for dessert, especially as the side of bread was just too delicious to ignore. my stomach was awash with all these flavours I had not experienced before and I wanted to sit back and enjoy my food digesting. So I did, while Simon managed to squeeze in a dessert. Being a Yorkshireman he had to go for the Yorkshire Rhubarb Trifle. Even with my love of cheese and the huge trolley displayed in front of me, I could not be tempted for even a slice I was so full. The Lawns does a taster menu for £80 per person, highly recommended as you can experience everything that is on offer. It’s a wonderful way to be introduced to food and discover ways of blending ingredients you many not normally think of mixing together. Just go on an empty stomach and loose fitting clothes to make the most of a wonderful experience. 49

WORLD AUTISM AWARENESS WEEK 26 March - 2 April 7 REASONS WHY WE HAVE WORLD AUTISM AWARENESS WEEK 1. To spread the word far and wide about autism World Autism Awareness Day is an internationally recognised day for bringing autism to the forefront of people’s consciousness throughout the world, taking place on 2 April. Every year, in the week leading up to this day, we encourage people to take part in World Autism Awareness Week – a full seven days where schools, workplaces and individuals, their families and friends all over the UK are taking part in activities to raise money and awareness for The National Autistic Society. 2. To raise as much money as possible to support autistic people We’ve come a long way in raising autism awareness, but there’s still more to be done until everyone understands autism. We need the public’s support to raise vital funds to continue running public awareness campaigns like Too Much Information, training and sharing knowledge with professionals working with autistic people, and so much more. 3. To support better education for autistic children and young people Supporting autistic children is also about educating other pupils to better understand and help their classmates. Schools can sign up for a free fundraising guide and age-specific lesson plans to help schools teach about autism. The money our fantastic supporters has raised in previous years has even helped us campaign to ensure that every trainee teacher in England will receive training in autism from this September.

4. To walk through the night Night Walks for Autism is the big lead up event to World Autism Awareness Week. There will be over 1,000 night walkers taking to the streets of London, Manchester, Glasgow and Bristol on 17 March 2018 to raise money in support of their daughters, sons, mums, dads, brothers, sisters, colleagues, friends… and we can’t thank them enough. It was a sold out event last year so secure your place and sign up today. 5. An excuse to wear a Onesie! Download our fundraising guide to find out about Onesie Wednesday’s return! 6. To bake like you’ve never baked before! Here’s a new challenge – bake a cake for every day of World Autism Awareness Week and ask for donations from your colleagues. We have a free autism quiz resource which is a fun way to raise money at work and means that you are teaching

your colleagues about autism. 7. To keep teaching, working and fundraising until everyone understands the 700,000 autistic people living in the UK

Why not take on our new challenge 7k for 700k, in support of the 700,000 autistic people in the UK.

THE BARD A Shakespeare-inspired micropub opened last month, Feb, in Prescot. The Bard, located at 57 High Street, is run by the husband-and-wife team behind local craft beer business The melwood Beer Company. John and Julie marsden said opening a micropub in Prescot has been on their wish list for some time. The Bard has a capacity of 40 to 50 people and offers a relaxed atmosphere without TVs, gaming machines or amplified music. Julie explained: “We are excited to be bringing the first ever micropub to Prescot! As a local business we fully support the regeneration of Prescot and this is why we want to have our micropub in the area.“With the Shakespeare North Playhouse start building now under way our venue lends its self perfectly to this. Blessed with the same dedication to writing quirky anthems on their own terms as The 1975, the brittle icy synth flourishes of Chvrches and a new era indie pop IT girl in singer Natti Shiner, Fickle Friends have established themselves as the essential new British indie-pop band of 2018. They’ve played over 350 live shows together, been playlisted regularly on Radio 1 with an incredible string of singles including ‘Brooklyn’, ‘Glue’ and ‘Hello Hello’, headlined a sold-out London Forum – and all before announcing their debut album. Until now… ‘You Are Someone Else’ is an irresistible debut record, effortlessly capturing both the joy and uncertainty of growing up a 2017 millennial. Songs addressing social awkwardness, self-doubt, anxiety and the qualms of growing into young adulthood all through a prism of perfect timeless pop.  Current single ‘Hard To Be myself’ is an undeniably brilliant pop anthem for a pre-loading generation of wasted youth that flips lyrically from gloriously hedonistic abandon to naked selfanalysis, while tracks such as ‘Wake me Up’ addresses angsty obsession and the art of over-thinking. The album as a whole pivots around relationships and their tireless effects on the young mind, exploring the highs and lows of dating, falling in love and of course, breaking up.  Fickle Friends are ultimately a great band with killer tunes who have worked hard at their trade and built a devoted fanbase the old fashioned way – playing as many shows as they could for as little cost, booking their own shows and writing songs on the road.  Now, after huge festival shows at Reading and Leeds and a sold out Forum in London, things are slightly easier, but the dedication to writing undeniable songs and playing great gigs remains the same and they look set to dominate festival bills next year and play their debut album to the masses.  On writing their debut album, Natti says, " this album mostly talks about the feeling that you don’t fit in your own life, forever craving something else. I felt like I was stuck in a perpetual nightmare of bad relationships and worry for so long and this collection of songs kinda pulled me out of that. We wrote and produced the bulk of everything between Jack’s bedroom, the tour van and LA so it’s been mostly dIY with an array of producers allowing us to get that extra 20%.  We always wanted to make a record that made people dance and think at the same time. If any of these songs help anyone feel cool, or strong or even just less alone then we’ll have achieved what we wanted."

Following their huge UK tour earlier this year The legendary Wailers band have confirmed a UK headline tour for march 2018. Steered by famed bassist and founder Aston “Familyman” Barrett, and joined in solidarity with original Wailers’ guitarists Junior marvin and donald Kinsey, The Wailers will perform 14 dates across some of the UK’s major cities! Bringing their revolutionary sound to fans around the world, the UK tour will see The Wailers play the iconic Legend album live on stage in its entirety, including its greatest hits  Three Little Birds, I Shot the Sheriff, Jammin’, and many more. From 1973 to 1980, Bob marley & The Wailers recorded, toured, and performed before countless millions worldwide. Since 1981, Familyman and Junior have carried on the mission to “keep The Wailers together,” just as Bob requested, affirming: “By doing that, you keep me alive through the music.” In tribute to the late co-founder and drummer Carlton “Carly” Barrett, The Wailers present Aston Barrett, Jr. on drums. It’s startling how this young powerhouse delivers with his uncle’s inspiring trademark style. Lead singer Joshua david Barrett is a Rastaman by lifestyle and culture. Josh delivers Bob’s powerful message of Jah love and unity through his performance and interaction with the audience. Also on stage are singers Shema mcGregor, daughter of I Three Judy mowatt, and Hassanah, a multi-cultural powerhouse; veteran Owen “dreadie” Reid on guitar/bass, and “triple bubble king” Javaughn Bond on keyboards.  There are more than 100 million Bob marley & The Wailers recordings sold with The New York Times named Bob marley the most significant musician of the 20th century. These accolades were made possible by the creative, timeless, and distinctive music, lyrics and production of these incomparable Wailers musicians.

and out in the streets,” says Astro. “The singers of these songs were our heroes. They are quintessential reggae artists.” The new album builds confidently on the momentum gathered in the five years since Astro rejoined singer Ali and keyboardist mickey in 2013. They have released two acclaimed albums, ‘Silhouette’ (2014) and ‘Unplugged’ (2016), their first acoustic album and their first release with new label UmC.

A S T RO F RO M U B 4 0 ‘A Real labour Of love’ is the long awaiting new album from uB40 Featuring Ali, Astro & Mickey, to be released March 2nd . Astro talked to Amanda Moss about the new release. As founding members of Britain’s biggest reggae band UB40, singer Ali Campbell, second vocalist Astro and keyboardist mickey Virtue topped the UK singles chart on three occasions and sold 70 million records as they took their smooth yet rootsy musical blend to all corners of the globe. Now with ‘A Real Labour Of Love’ the trio give us a fresh take on the legendary series of albums, putting the focus primarily on reggae tracks from the 1980s.  “The first three albums featured the songs we grew up listening to,” says Ali. “This one is built around the records we were listening to once UB40 were on the road.”  With global success behind them, why did they feel the urge to get back on tour? Astro said, “ Being a musician is all I have evener known and when you write an album and release it, going on tour is the next strep. It’s just what you do. And I love it, it’s deeply satisfying. It’s a really humbling career 56

because you cant force people to listen to your music or buy your records. they have to want it. What I say to everyone is come and see us live.“ Between 1983 and 1998 UB40 produced three ‘Labour Of Love’ albums, bringing hits such as Eric donaldson’s ‘Cherry Oh Baby’, Lord Creator’s ‘Kingston Town’ and Johnny Osbourne’s ‘Come Back darling’ to a new, global audience. They also topped the charts on both sides of the Atlantic with their reggae cover of Neil diamond’s ‘Red Red Wine’. And now 20 years later Ali, Astro and mickey are revitalising the concept by exploring the tunes of a later golden age, The new album sees the group explore the songs that defined reggae in the Eighties. The concept isn’t a rigid one: Stevie Wonder’s ‘A Place In The Sun’ is a motown classic from 1966, and there are numbers from the late Seventies in dennis Brown’s sublime ‘How Could I Leave’ and Culture’s ‘International Herb’. But most of the tracks on ‘A Real Labour Of Love’ are from the Eighties, a decade that saw dancehall reggae enter the mainstream. “We were spending more time in Jamaica and some of these numbers are the ones we’d hear on the radio

Recorded and mixed at dean Street and RAK Studios, ‘A Real Labour Of Love’ was produced by Ali, whose instantly recognisable voice is augmented by the ‘sing-jay’ vocal style of Astro. The latter takes the lead on six of the album’s 16 tracks, placing the two singers at the helm of an 11-piece band. Sadly, ‘A Real Labour Of Love’ also marks the passing of long-serving trombonist John Johnson. A former member of Simply Red who joined forces with Ali seven years ago, John played on the album but passed away the night before the rest of the group were due to play a benefit concert to raise money for his cancer treatment. The album is dedicated to him.  The group are now looking forward to taking their new album on the road, with UK festival appearances lined up for the summer and a UK arena tour in the pipeline for 2019. Given the massive success of the trio’s last ‘Labour Of Love’ outing, a 2016 tour that featured sold-out shows at the O2 Arena in London and the Barclaycard Arena in Birmingham, there is bound to be a huge appetite for ‘A Real Labour Of Love’.  Astro said,"

Lifestyle

spring is in the air and I have a spring in my step; Not only are the days lighter and longer but it’s Mother’s Day. In my www.lifestylemonthly.co.uk house everyday is mother’s day it’s a blessing I never take editor@lifestylemonthly.co.uk for granted and am thankful for everyday. Not only do I have @amandalifestyle six wonderful children, they’re all so caring of each other. so many people experience friction with their kids but my household is full of love and we rarely fall out. They’re my best friends and my inspiration for pushing myself to my limit. Talking of which, I have been fortunate enough to be invited to speak at some networking events lately. I talk about limitations and how the only limits we have are those we put on ourselves. We can do whatever we want if we put our minds to it. I am holding a workshop this month about social media and coping with social media trolls. Being self employed can we very isolating and if you receive a negative comment on your business or personal page, it can be quite destructive. I show you how to combat this and turn it into positive thinking. Check out the advert inside and book through eventbrite. This month also launches my events for the next few months. Of course it’s the big one at the start on March, the liverpool lifestyle Awards. This is my favourite event of the year celebrating the talents and success of small businesses around the region, the ones propping up the local economy and working hard on the small parades of shops, in the suburbs and in their homes. I love seeing everyone come together to support each other in business It's sad however, that one business liverpool has just closed down but no surprise. some companies think their name alone is enough to survive in a competitive industry. Time and again they turned down advertising opportunities...with any business a marketing and advertising budget is key to its success. lifestyle magazine understands this and that is why we have been going 10 years, we also advertise. If you're saying to yourself "I don't need to advertise" ask yourself why the likes of McDonalds, DHs and very are on Tv all the time? And in print? Because EvERYONE needs to advertise. Full stop. You may be the best on your block but if no one knows about you, you won't grow. And business needs growth to survive Talk to me about how I can help your business and get you noticed. My new youtube channel launches shortly, get involved

Stay blessed and grateful
