FLOORS & WALLS SETUP BY AHMAD JARADAT IN 2018 Ahmad is a specialist in home decor with 24 years experience. Whilst an artist who sells his own paintings on canvas, he also supplies blinds, pergolas, astroturf and rugs. He said, "I have been always interested and love art, specially abstract, started as hobby, then my wife encouraged me to put them for sale. I like to paint things that not even I can do the same one again. Most of my paintings have emotions and a personal story behind each one and I try to reflect that with the colours I use and my imagination. I have never been to an art college. I am self taught." Speculating on the new trends for winter he says, "This winter its all mustard khaki green and dark blue. Minimal ". 2

SOCIAL MEDIA ADDICTION ON THE INCREASE FOR YOUNG PEOPLE IN CYPRUS
A
round 8 per cent of young people in Cyprus are addicted to social media, while 24 per cent are addicted to the internet, according to a new survey carried out by Alexander College. Due to the pandemic, the research, supported by the Cyprus Addiction Treatment Authority, the Youth Board and the Hellenic Bank was presented behind closed doors. The survey sample consisted of 1,059 young people aged 15-35, of whom 465 were students. By gender, the sample consisted of 622 women and 437 men. According to the study there is growing scientific evidence an overreliance on technology
10
has led to the decrease of social skills as continuous online connection results in a shortened attention span and a reduction in the ability to retain information. Addiction is defined as a situation where a person is overly preoccupied with the object of their addiction, are driven by a strong motivation to engage with it and devote so much time and effort that it harms other social activities, studies, work, interpersonal relationships, mental health and well-being.
According to the results of the survey, from those polled the average age at which they were introduced to the internet was 10.5 and they created their first social media accounts at around 12.5 years. Most popular was Instagram (44 per cent), YouTube (25 per cent) and Facebook (14 per cent).

QUAR ANTIN E LIFE
Editor Amanda Moss reports from her hotel room in Paphos
I
cut short my trip to Liverpool to visit my family to fly back to Cyprus, for fear of being stuck in the UK for months. This would have wreaked havoc on my business. Arriving at Liverpool Airport at 4am, the place was eerily deserted except for around 20 people. As my daughter and I got to the boarding gate, passengers were being turned down if they couldn’t provide proof of residency in Cyprus. Thank goodness for my yellow slip. There were 30 people on the flight, plenty of social distancing and of course we had to wear our masks for the entire journey. When we landed we were taken to a room in arrivals where we had to take a covid test. My daughter and I already had a negative result from one taken 2 days previously but rules are rules and we paid the 60 euro each. From taking the test, we were ushered through passport control and
straight onto a bus where we were driven to our quarantine hotel, Leonardo Maris Spa Resort in Paphos. We were given a sandwich and a banana and sent to our rooms where were are to remain for the next seven days.. The room, which we are forbidden to leave, is nice, a large bed where Honey and I can sleep without encroaching on each other’s space. Water is provided in the rooms but no tea or coffee so glad I brought my own. No alcohol is allowed either. In the evening they forgot to bring us our dinner so we phoned down. Minutes later a cold pasta pie was delivered in a sad polystyrene container along with a banana and a yoghurt. Breakfast was marginally better, some sweaty cheese and ham slices, some dry bread and cornflakes that tasted of paper.
The meals have been bland and luke warm at best. Really craving something tasty. Christmas day was the longest day ever. We spent hours on video chat with our family back home.Sitting around for so long has given me back ache, despite me doing workouts everyday in the little space we have. Time seems to stand still in here. This morning I couldn’t face lying in bed any longer and walked five kilometres of the bedroom floor, we have run out of toilet roll, my eyeliner pencil needs sharpening and I don’t have a sharpener and I miss my protein shakes. The hotel left us cleaning products to sanitise our rooms and we have to change our own sheets. We have 4 days to go and are surviving on our good humour, positive affirmations and social media. Thankfully it is so easy to stay connected to everyone. Quarantine is a small sacrifice to be able to live in the country we love. And at the end of the day I got to fly home to spend a few days with all my children, and fly back. Something that many families did not get the privilege to do. 15

Following a three-year international public tender procurement, the Republic of Cyprus reached an agreement in March with a consortium known as Kition Ocean Holdings consisting of a Cypriot and an Israeli company, to redevelop and operate the historic Larnaca Port and Marina, the island’s largest infrastructure project of its kind. expansion of the road network and coastal pedestrian streets and the landscaping of the new green spaces.
T
he transition period starts this month which will last up to 12 months. During this period, Kition Ocean Holdings Ltd in full cooperation with the Government and all competent authorities will proceed to secure all the necessary permits and approvals required by the contract, for the smooth delivery of the entire project to the consortium and construction work will start shortly afterwards and to be completed in four phases by 2037. The first phase will last five years and aims to complete the new infrastructure works, so people can use and enjoy the new spaces created. These include the
The existing Marina will be expanded to accommodate 650 boats and “mega yachts”. The works also include the construction of the Marina Yacht Club with offices, cafes, event venues, sailing schools, diving schools and navigation stores. The new upgraded Larnaca Port will now be able to accommodate luxury cruise ships, energy exploration vessels, military, and other merchant ships. Completion of the project follows three phases of construction including luxury villas, imposing residential buildings with 360-degree unobstructed views, office buildings, a shopping area with restaurants
and a traditional market where local producers will be able to sell their products in a pleasant environment. In the second phase, we plan to build the educational element of this project of approximately 20,000 sqm of University Lecture and Research Theatres where a Medical School will co-exist next to a Medical Centre, a Hotel and Hospitality College and, finally, a Blue Marine, Environmental and Energy University. During the third phase estimated to take place before year 10 of this project, we will be constructing 45 Luxury Villas on the new breakwater with their own private berths. On the same breakwater, we will build a state-ofthe-art luxury residential lighthouse which will offer 360-degree views from all the apartments. North of the Marina, the final U-shape residential building will be constructed together with a 5-star business hotel, a commercial centre and two additional luxury residential buildings which will be served and maintained by the hotel. 17

COACHING Are you married to the right one? ‘Women are impossible.’ ‘He just doesn't get me!’ If you feel this more than you would like, then this is for you. My name is Dimple and I am the last resort before divorce. Let me tell you why… A multimillionaire man said to me the most painful thing he has ever experienced in his life ‘was not being able to make his wife happy and having to let her go. The mother of his children!’ he cried saying ‘I wish we met before I got divorced.’ This was nearly me and my man. Children need love and stability. Adults you need to get your shit together - why? Because we all deserve happiness, passion and connection. Don't settle for mediocre. Don’t be a shitty role model for your kids. Here is my 5 step process for clarity: Honesty - be honest with yourself first and then them, not the other way around. 18
Education - learn about the differences between men and women - we are not the same. Articulate - speak your truth in an effective and compassionate way. Resolve - draw a line in the sand with the past - it's done. Move on or let it consume you. It's up to you. Try new things - when you have been with someone for decades (3 for me) it can get a bit boring. Spice things up - keep it fresh.
Welcome to my HEART model. You can reach me on www.dimple. love for more information about this or anything relationship and love.

NEW YEAR, NEW YOU
A Lifestyle of Wellness Happy New Year, may this year bring you joy and Wellness! This time of year is notorious for making new year resolutions that are not seen through to the end. Let’s make 2021 different. Achieve your goals with ease by following the processes outlined below. A great way to approach your goal is by following the WHAT, WHY, HOW and WHEN process. • If you have made a resolution then you already know WHAT you want. If you haven’t then take time to notice what are you complaining about the most. Once you know what is not pleasing to you think if what you can do to change it. Make that your goal. • Now you must stay motivated enough to be disciplined in achieving your goal. To stay motivated you need to have a strong WHY you want this. Your WHY will remind you why you went on this journey and what you will feel when you complete it. Make sure
that your reason is strong enough to keep going even on the toughest of days. • Next step is to work out the HOW. A clear plan, especially one that is broken down into small steps, will help you hugely. Your HOW needs to be realistic. Make sure that you can easily do the steps in your plan on an ongoing basis. Include milestones and rewards. The milestones will help you review where you are on your journey. Rewards will train your brain to know your efforts are followed by pleasure. Pleasure is highly motivating.
Ekaterina Sophia in Larnaca the destination. Here are a few: • Get an accountability partner. Having another person to keep you on track might turn out to be exactly what you need. • Have healthy inner self talk. The way you talk to yourself really does matter. • Overcome your limiting beliefs. Get rid of what is holding you back. Know you are enough and can do it.
• Finally, the WHEN must be decided. The best WHEN is now. Now may or may not be the best time to start some parts of your project, but you can still start. You can research and work on the plan to get what you want. Doing a little everyday is much better than putting it off. Even one minute of action a day is habit building.
• Journaling. Spend a few hours a week journaling. Write down all you are greatful for, you concerns and experiences. You will feel freedom and gain clarity as a result.
There are many ways you can help yourself reach

CARLA CHIERICALLO My story..
M
y name is Carla and I am originally from Italy. At the early age of 17 years old I left my country and went to live in Switzerland followed by Spain and England in later years. I have lived in England for many years, where I studied and worked. After so many years in England I decided that it was time for a move. By coincidence I discovered this beautiful island Cyprus, which I love living in it as it is safe, the weather is fantastic, people are lovable and it is a good place to expand and promote my business. For many years I suffered from acidity in my stomach and in the last four years from chronic cystitis. You might ask yourself what chronic cystitis is and it basically causes a painful pressure or burning in the pelvic region, and a frequent need to urinate. The condition affects women more often than men. If you've ever had a
urinary tract infection, the pain is very difficult to live with it as it affected my day to day life, sometimes not even feeling well enough to get up in the morning and keep going. I saw so many doctors in Italy and in the UK, who gave me plenty of antibiotics and medicines. These treatments didn’t help me to solve the problem, but actually they made my immune system weaker. This year I lost hope and I thought there was no solution anymore for me. One doctor in the UK told me that he could inject me several injections in my bladder, but with the risk that I would end up using the urinary catheter. I thought that this solution wasn’t the best and actually not very pleasant at my age wearing a urinary catheter. Finally three months ago I met an Italian guy in London who made me try a wellness coffee. He said that with this coffee and also tea his girlfriend resolved
the problem of chronic cystitis. I said to myself let’s try I don’t have nothing to loose. After less than two months my symptoms improved and I started to use the bathroom less often. Also the acidity in my stomach reduced. Today I feel much better and I am so happy that I discovered this wellness coffee and tea. These fantastic beverages not only help my health issues, but they can improve with high pressure, diabetes, anxiety, depression, weight loss and more. After the great result of these products, I decided to help other people by becoming a distributor. Today many people are happy and thanking me that I gave them these products. NEW YEAR, NEW YOU
C
liche? Perhaps. Okay, definitely. But as I sit here writing this in December 2020 wishing this year was over already I am starting to look forwards and making goals for 2021, staying positive that there will be great things to look forward to. So, my first question is Where do you want to be by the end of the year? As you close your eyes, what do you imagine your lifestyle, body, eating habits, are like? Is that version of you happy, fit, healthy and their natural self? Go on, close your eyes and spend a few, or more, moments with the you that you want to be in December 2021. Now, open your eyes - is that the person that is in the mirror right now? If not, what will it take to become that person?
The answer to this question can be daunting, I know. I have been there and I have struggled to work out what it is I truly want and need. However, I can tell you that anything is possible though if you keep that goal in your mind and start living that lifestyle NOW! That’s right - be present in the now and behave how you wish you could. No, it’s not going to happen overnight, but putting in place healthy behaviour patterns now will help make the change more fluid, easier to manage, and FUN. My most used phrase is “Baby Steps”. What is one thing you can change this month that will get you closer to your vision? What will you do in February to build upon that and get you even closer? You don’t need
Keely Griffiths +357 99 059149 keely@bewellwithkeely.com www.newellwithkeely.com
to have all the answers straight away, take it one baby step at a time and don’t take the next one till it is ingrained. Step by step you will change. Change your mindset. Change your habits. Change your body (if that is your goal). Change your LIFE. And before you know it, it will be December and you will be looking at the person you are envisioning now because you are her/him, just not quite yet!

LIFESTYLE CHATS TO FASHION DESIGNER
PATRICK JOSEPH age I appreciated the craft of tailoring and feel good factor of having garments made to your exact measurements, style and specification, My grandmother was gifted in sewing, knitting and stitching. I grew up playing with her sewing equipment to experiment with different clothes and patterns to make miniature garments for my action movie toy models. She taught me the skills to use my hands creatively.
When did you become a designer? In 2011 after I decided to turn my passion for fashion into a business. Before then I used design clothes for my own use and doing favours for friends and family.
26
What are your inspirations? I was inspired by my grandparents. My grandad used to wear tailored suits six days a week. He taught me that “the cloth maketh a man”. From a very early
What was the turning point in your career? September 2019 when I got the opportunity to showcase at London Fashion Week. This has been my childhood dream. The exposure from that event opened up doors that I couldn’t fathom possible a few years ago. What is your latest collection? It is called Beauty and the Beast. It is reflection of the beauty that women flawlessly ooze to make our world a better place. The beast is a reflection of the military and the alpha males that
sign up to the military world-wide to protect and serve our world. How has the pandemic affection you? It has negatively affected the industry by disrupting the manufacturing and supply chain due to restrictions imposed on factories and the delivery chain. Designers have also been affected by the cancellation of all major live fashion shows in the UK and most European countries. This will have a financial impact on designers due to lost revenue. What is your signature pieces? My couture dresses. They are exclusive one off pieces never to be made again when sold. What makes you stand out? My use of British and Italian sourced materials mixed with quintessential English elegance and traditional Italian flair to bring out the best of both worlds in all my pieces. To see more visit

A statement coat is hard to find, yet Patrick Joseph’s AW21 coat is a British classic addition to any lady’s winter wardrobe. Crafted in a cashmere blend with a triple button fastening, the strong silhouette of the shoulders brings an elegant finish to the piece.

STILL HAVING A LAUGH He’s the celebrity that celebrities avoid, and one of our finest exports.
I
n many respects, Ricky Gervais is a pretty bad version of a celebrity. He looks like someone who works in a hardware store, has been fiercely loyal and faithful to partner Jane Fallon for the past three decades, doesn’t live in a 15-bedroom mansion, and couldn’t undertake a spate of brazen virtuesignalling if he tried. There’s also the small matter of him calling out other celebrities for their greed, corrupt dealings, bullying, two-facedness and hypocrisy at any available opportunity. A habit that began when he started naming and shaming out the great and the good during his debut hosting of the Golden Globes back in 2010 – remarkably, they keep inviting him back! –
28
has now extended fully into everyday discourse. And at the start of the recent Coronavirus lockdown we were treated to a brilliant display of Gervais bashing when a bevy of film stars, musicians and models felt the need to take to social media to inform us just how tough life was. “After this is over I never want to hear people moaning about the welfare state again; I never want to hear people moaning about nurses again, or porters,” he said. “These people are doing 14-hour shifts and not complaining. Wearing
masks, and being left with sores, after risking their own health and their families’ health selflessly. But then I see someone complaining about being in a mansion with a swimming pool. And, you know, honestly, I just don’t want to hear it.” Many regard Ricky Gervais a national treasure; a select few consider him a national disgrace. Either way, it's hard to avoid the magnitude of the man.
In his typical black t-shirt and jeans uniform, the actor, stand-up comedian, writer, producer and director is a melange of passionate sentiment, delivering fix-eyed intensity followed by a howling hyena cackle. A one-time aspiring singer and band manager (he looked after indie outfit, Suede, back in their earliest incarnation), Ricky flitted around the bounds of entertainment with guest spots on Channel 4's The 11'O Clock Show before landing pay dirt with selfscripted mockumentary series The Office. An overnight household name, the gritty comedy launched an unstoppable career. Follow-up series Extras, parodying the movie industry, was another smash hit, featuring A-list contributions from Kate Winslet, Ben Stiller, Patrick Stewart and Samuel L. Jackson. It was the perfect introduction into Hollywood, and he went on to star in a series of big budget comedies Sky Kids, Ghost Town, Night At The Museum, The Invention of Lying and The Muppets. Some topped the box office, others crashed and
burned badly, yet all of them satisfied in Gervais a yearning for originality and creativity, and that flame has never lessened in its intensity, even in returning to small screen projects such as Life’s Too Short, Derek, Special Correspondents and the recent After Life, which garnered rave reviews. No matter what project he takes on, Gervais, who lives with longterm partner Jane Fallon, is a bastion for freedom of speech and common sense. He has unapologetic honesty that permeates every conversation, whether discussing the “scourge” of religion, or admiring the majesty of the natural world, or calling out nationalities, races, genders or persuasions, Gervais takes offence at people being offended. “It’s a disease that’s getting worse,” he says. “It’s not healthy and it’s not even real. Most of the people who claim to have taken offence by a statement someone makes on Twitter are actually some of the most offensive people I have ever encountered,” he laughs. As for where 2021 will take this creative powder keg. “As always, I have a few things on the go.
The great thing about lockdown is you have time – too much time – to sit back and raid all those little nuggets of ideas that have been scattered in the back of your mind for too long. “When you bring them to the front of your mind you realise some of them are pretty good and deserve fleshing out a bit. You also realise a good quantity more are utter crap, but what I love about the process is that while I'm writing, I see it, I live it in my mind. It's all there, I see it on screen, I see it and when you're the writer, director and producer, it comes as one.” “I get to protect my writing by directing and producing. I direct to protect the writing, I produce to protect the directing.” “The challenge is always to keep trying, keep things original, keep the creative processes rolling, and stay ever so slightly controversial!”

S TO.. months before the first T A H C E L Y T S E LI F note is played. Artistic Director of the Cyprus What plans have you got for Christmas and the Symphony Orchestra Mr. Nicolas new year The orchestra has just finished their Papageorgiou Christmas concerts - to be these. So How the pandemic has affected you? The culture and live performance sector is one of the sectors hardest hit by the pandemic, and the orchestra is no exception; we are having to play socially distanced, with our repertoire adjusted accordingly and are subject to changes at very short notice - guest artists have been hit at the last minute by travel restrictions and we have had to also make lastminute changes of venues due to curfews being imposed, etc. Luckily we have from the start had alternative plans to cover any eventuality and have managed to keep plying throughout the pandemic, live or online where necessary. How easy is it to be accepted into the Orchestra as a musician The orchestra has an audition procedure which is followed whenever there is a vacancy. These are competitive and there are usually many candidates from around Europe for each of
candidates would need to be in top shape and well in control of the repertoire. Beyond that, there is always an element of how it will go in the day of course, and anyone winning an audition has a trial year before being confirmed as a member. How long does it take to put a production together For a standard orchestral programme, the musical part (i.e. rehearsals and concerts) would be one or two weeks. Beyond that, the musicians need to be arrive personally prepared for the first rehearsal (i.e. no learning of music during rehearsals!) so depending on the repertoire they will have to do this preparation in their own time. And of course, there is the behind-the-scenes preparation - engaging conductors and soloists, negotiating all the fees, budgeting, getting the logistics together. All of this will begin many
broadcast as the closure of venues due to the pandemic did not allow live performances and the musicians are taking a small well-earned break before the next series, the New Years’ Concerts. Personally, I will be spending it in lockdown in London with my family.
How important do you think is music in modern culture in Cyprus Very important – one ‘silver lining’ of the pandemic is that it highlighted how much the arts in general are missed when they are not there. What concerts are forecast for 2021 As I said earlier, the current circumstances have forced us to revert to a very short-term planning. You can follow live updates on our upcoming concerts via our social media pages (Cyprus Symphony Orchestra) and our website (www. cyso.org.cy), so do keep checking – all I can say is that there are some really interesting programmes in the coming months – something for everyone, from classical to jazz.

instrumental guitar duo who have ventured to great acoustic heights to produce an amazing and unique fresh sound of flamenco technique and progressive Rock. Their second album The Hadal Zone, was released in October and is as magical to listen to, as it is to watch Alex and Nadav strum away passionately and vigorously on their guitars. I happily and thankfully came across this duo, who have performed in beautiful locations (pre Covid). Make sure to check out their music, their CD will make an amazing Christmas present.
Hello Belgium!! Introducing MYGUN, a newly formed band from Brugge (I love Brugge!) This hard rock, Grunge quartet have just released their Debut EP album ‘Dry Season Has Come’. Obviously, this year has been a dry season for music events, however, many musicians have been working really hard, being productive and busy writing and recording albums in this music barren year, and that includes MYGUN. Coming together, they have produced six powerful tracks full of electric energy and rawness, reminiscent
of 90’s Grunge which is obviously alive today. Even though a new band, all four members are professional musicians hailing from other bands and musical projects. I know the frontman Henk, who is also the vocalist for the Stoner band Cowboys & Aliens, who have performed twice
in Cyprus, once at Into the Limbo Festival and secondly, at Savino Live in February. A powerful frontman that has you transfixed the moment he walks on stage. Find MYGUN on FACEBOOK and all musical platforms.
