TIME IS MONEY - THE SIMPLE CAR INSURANCE ERRORS THAT COULD COST MOTORISTS UP TO £114 MILLION A YEAR • Busy Liverpudlians risking millions of pounds by forgetting to renew MOT or tax on time and leaving cars unlocked • Other habits that could be costing Liverpool based motorists include driving in flip flops (21%) and putting off car maintenance • Over a third (34%) don’t realise these oversights can invalidate their car insurance, while almost one in five said they were in too much of a rush • With average car insurance pay-outs now £2,671, these slips ups could leave a £114 million hole in the nation’s bank balances, as 43,000 claims are rejected each year • 25% of young drivers underestimate the severity of their actions while 43% of older drivers say they simply forgot certain behaviours could impact their insurance policy • uSwitch.com urges drivers to keep up-todate with their MOT and tax renewal dates, using a reminder service if required, so they are not penalised should they have to make a claim.
Proving time really is money, drivers could be risking up to £114 million, in rejected car insurance claims due to slip ups like forgetting to MOT their car or renew their car tax on time, or putting off car maintenance. According to new research from uSwitch.com, the price comparison and switching service, 60%[6] of drivers in Liverpool make simple errors which can leave them out of pocket, should they need to make a claim. As well as forgetting their key renewal dates, over a fifth of pressed motorists in Liverpool (27%) confess to not locking their cars, over one fifth (21%) admit to not taking the time to change out of inappropriate driving shoes before jumping behind the wheel Other faux pas that could lead Liverpudlians to invalidate their car insurance include letting pet(s) roam freely in the car forgetting to renew their car MOT on time, lending their car to friend or family member (7%) and hanging fluffy dice from the rear view mirror Over a third (34%) of Liverpudlian drivers admitted that they didn’t realise these small errors could result in car insurance providers not paying out, with 28% of drivers admitting they simply forget that such behaviours might impact on an insurance claim As young drivers head off to university or move away from
home in search of a steady job, they are three times (15%) more likely than their parents (5%) to invalidate their insurance by not updating their address. However, old habits die hard and people over 55 (29%) are almost twice as likely as young drivers (17%) to leave their cars unlocked[9]. The latest data from the Association of British Insurers (ABI) shows that over 43,000 car insurance claims are rejected a year. With the average insurance claim now £2,671, on average, motorists could be losing as much as £114.85 million[3] from claims being rejected each year, showing that these small mistakes can be very costly. Rod Jones, insurance expert at uSwitch.com, says: “We know the British public are increasingly time poor, so it’s unsurprising that motorists can be forgetful when it comes to locking up their cars or renewing their car MOT and taxes on time. “With claims now running into the thousands of pounds, people can’t afford to make a careless mistake that could invalidate their cover and leave them out of pocket. It is therefore really important that drivers note down their key renewal dates, and avoid making the easy to forget mistakes to ensure they are covered by should they ever need to make a claim.”

GINO D’ACAMPO

As Gino D’Acampo opened his business in Liverpool last month, he explains it is far more than just a restaurant. Amanda Moss talks exclusively to the nation's favourite Italian.
I
t is a hot and sticky day in July when I am invited to Gino D’acampo’s My Restaurant on Castle Street. Greeted at the door I am offered a crisp glass of prosecco, one of 10 fine choices from their exclusive prosecco bar. By the entrance is his book shop and grocery store piled front floor to ceiling with ingredients. Everything on the menu features in Gino’s cookbooks and you can buy al the ingredients in house to recreate the dishes at home. Such a brilliant and simple idea and Gino obviously has personally approved every item on his menu. As I walked through to the main restaurant with the open kitchens where I felt the heat from the ovens as chefs busily prepared the lunchtime orders. In the middle of the restaurant is the Ciccheti, a tapas slide bar where you can come and have a drink and some Italian nibbles if you don’t fancy a meal. perfect for lunchtime or after work meetings and treats.
I was led through some doors and down a staircase and down a corridor to the Bullion Room, a private party area hidden in the bowels of the building (It used to be a bank). If you book this room you and your guests will be treated to your own personal DJ, bar, pool tables and a private dining experience. It looks really cool and bound to be the hottest “go to” place in town. Back in the main restaurant we went upstairs to another private dining balcony but with the ability to soak in the atmosphere of the main restaurant. It is here that I was greeted with a massive bear hug from Gino D’Acampo ahead of our chat. He’s a very busy man, watching him snake his way through the restaurant his popularity is obvious; he cant take a step without being pounced on to pose for a selfie with an adoring fan. And ever the gentleman, he happily obliges. “Of course, it’s very much part of my job and if I appear somewhere I have to factor in the time to speak to people. These are my customers and I want to keep them happy, I want them to return!” Gino D’Acampo My Restaurant is part of a chain which he has started mostly in the north of the UK, with venues in Harrogate, Manchester and London Euston and one opening in Camden and Hull shortly. So why Liverpool? “Liverpool is the coolest city in the UK” Gino says with great big smile. “The people are the coolest, they have their own style and it’s the place to be. so naturally I wanted to be here. How do I find the time? Well it’s all about being organised and planning in advance!” He makes a point of spending one day a month in each of his restaurants, saying , “It is important I am here. this is not just a restaurant, this is a lifestyle. I want people to come
here and be comfortable, bring their families and stay a while. I want people not to just have a classic Italian meal like bolognese or lasagne but experience the individual flavours and the colours of the food. I spend a lot of time in Italy researching new recipes and tasting new flavours and I bring that back and it’s in my menu, it’s in my book.” I sampled the Arancine, crispy mushroom risotto balls, buffalo mozzarella and a tomato and red pepper sauce which was absolutely delicious and captured many flavours.I love that each dish on the menu shows a page reference to the recipe in his book, it makes the whole dining experience rather personal. Definitely worth a visit and certainly won’t make a dent in your purse… Buon Appetito

A Marie Curie Nurse from the Liverpool Hospice will take over Liverpool Central Station for the next few weeks.
JOIN TEAM BILL! IS THE CAMPAIGN with pictures of local Marie Curie Nurse Bill Dynes to raise awareness of the work their nurses do in the community and to fund a local nurse at the charity’s Liverpool hospice with a call for people to “Join Team Bill” to fund a Marie Curie Nurse like him for the next two years. Nurse Bill, who provides care to terminally ill people and their families, shares his thoughts about being the face of Marie Curie in his home city. He says: “I’m excited to be part of the station take over. My main motivation for getting involved is to raise awareness about Marie Curie, so we can help more people living with a terminal illness. I’m really honoured to be a Marie Curie Nurse and to play this role in promoting the charity in such an exciting way. How was I picked? Well, it wasn't my movie star good looks! I've been fortunate enough to be involved in a few promotional events, since joining the staff at 12
Bill joined the Marie Curie Hospice, Liverpool, in October 2015. Previous to his role with the charity, he had worked as a prison nurse for 12 years and worked in a HIV clinic for 12 years. Bill says: “I’m often asked what it was like coming from such a different working environment but I don’t think it’s so different. Your hospice patient might be dying and a prisoner has had their life taken away – so on one level it is a similar grief process. People do not want to be where they are but it is your job as their nurse to support them, to take care of them.” “A key part of my role is active listening. It’s not just about giving information but absorbing it from the patient and family to give patient-centred care. Sometimes your feet don’t touch the floor but I like to make time to say, ‘How’s your day been? I know I’m here to take away your pain, but I can also hold your hand if you would like me to. I remember a small boy visiting his sick mum, stopping me and just asking for a hug. It doesn’t matter how busy you are. When a six-year-old asks for a hug he gets one. That’s why it’s important we raise money for Marie Curie, so that we can help more people and make a real difference. How did I feel seeing myself on the poster? Well if it was just A poster I suppose I'd be quite flattered, but this is total immersion! 3 or 4 times life size on every
surface of the entire station, apart from the ceiling. The pictures speak for themselves, but I have to admit my first viewing of the station was really awesome. During the campaign Marie Curie will be at the station, providing commuters with information about the charity’s services and encouraging them to make a donation. Marie Curie is looking to recruit 600 supporters to fund a nurse like Bill for up to two years. Major advertising boards in the station will be replaced with pictures of Bill, who previously worked as a prison nurse, to raise awareness of the work the nurses do in the community and to fund a local nurse at the charity’s Liverpool hospice.
“
Marie Curie, including last years international nurses day and so the invite came direct from the PR team. I'm not what you might describe as a shy person, so applying that element of my personality to promoting the work Marie Curie does for the wider public wasn't all that daunting."
BILL ADDED There is a goal is to recruit 600 people to sign up as regular donors and fund another nurse for the Marie Curie Hospice, Liverpool, but I think this is also an opportunity to do even more than that. If we can promote the work Marie Curies does throughout the country, both in the hospices and in peoples own homes and also encourage people to face their own demise and discuss their wants and wishes while they're well, that can only be a good thing. We seem to have these conversations when it's too late. So maybe we can have them now. Also, life is short. Buy the shoes. Eat the cake!

RADIO & TV PRESENTER, SINGLE MUM & SOCIALITE CLAIRE SIMMO I
cannot believe another month has flown by and we are almost at the end of the "summer" holidays! I remember waking up every day during the summer and playing outside - never once did it enter our heads that it would rain! Now my life is spent hopefully wearing maxi dresses and wedges - to then leave work with squelchy feet from puddles and sopping wet hems on my dresses! After the round the world trip to reach Germany last month for the Dance World Cup ... we did actually manage a family holiday to Vilamoura in Portugal, which was just what we needed. Just mum, my brother Pete and his partner Chris and my 2 kids, and after what has been a year full of medical problems for my mum - it was nice to take her back to the places that my dad (Who sadly passed away 11 years ago) loved so much. Social media is fabulous for painting pictures of what looks like perfect lives, and I pride myself having never posted anything negative as I don't see it as an attention seeking platform. However - life can be very different to how it is portrayed yes I am very lucky and have a job that I love and wonderful family and friends, but on a personal side in the last year - mum spent most
of last summer in hospital in intensive care with a lung infection which resulted in me moving in with her in November, then she was just starting to get on the road to recovery when she had a fall in February - breaking her shoulder and knee. It was only 6 weeks ago that she was able to walk unaided - and we didn't even know whether she would be able to come away - but we got her there - which made it even more special. The night before we went away was not spent packing - but attending 2 very special events. The first was working for The Guide Liverpool reporting on The Disney Ship docking again in Liverpool - I was in my element leading a sing a long as the ship left sail - once again to be informed by Disney themselves that they were overwhelmed by the response they receive from our City the best they have seen - but of course - we Scousers aren't shocked to hear that! I then dashed to my daughter Melodies leavers BBQ ... her very last day in Primary school - St Johns in Ainsdale ... the thought of my baby girl (Who is incidentally and inch and a half bigger than me and wears size 9 shoes) going to High School - makes me think I'm going to have to start lying about both my kids ages never mind my own! Since returning from holidays I have been able to announce that I will be appearing in panto again this Christmas (Oh yes I am!) ... I am so excited to be working with my lovely friend Lee Kelly and will be playing Tinkerbell in Peter Pan at The Epstein Theatre - alongside Dane Bowers as Captain Hook and the extremely talented Lewis Pryor as Peter Pan himself! I'm already counting sleeps to Christmas (http://www.epsteinliverpool.co.uk/eve nts/peter-pan/). I have also been working at the Albert Dock with
Everton in the Community for their Summer Football on the Dock - it was great to see so many kids come along and join in the free coaching sessions, and even Everton legends Graeme Sharp, Ian Snodin and Graham Stuart and joined in the fun! Pride weekend was another major highlight for the City and loved hosting the Sunday family day with another very good friend and Legend that is Pete Price on the steps of St Georges Hall which was closed by an outstanding performance from Marcus Collins, to see so many faces in the crowd – both young and old enjoying the whole weekend made me once again realise what a wonderful message Liverpool shows to the rest of the world! It was fabulous to be back working with Paul Crone for Southport Flower Show Ladies Day ... which is always superbly put together by Kaz Tindell Watkins! As well as seeing performances from the fabulous Gary Barker and The Mersey Boys - and having the Milk Tray man Patrick McBride on hand to judge Best Dressed Ladies - also managed to raise £2500 for Incubabies which is a charity that has become very close to my heart. A final highlight of the month was hosting Kidsfest in Stanley Park with my good friend Reece Ryan. This is the 3rd year that Denise and Stuart Fergus have brought together this family festival and it has grown so much we had to move further into the park to accommodate the 15000 people that visited that day. I am so proud to be an Ambassador for the James Bulger Memorial Trust and to be a close friend of Stuart and Denise, and the whole of us as a team of Ambassadors all pulled together on the day to make sure that everyone had a fabulous time - and yes - the sun stayed out so no squelchy feet!

What can people expect from an audience with you? It's about my life stories from growing up as a child up until the current day. Some things that I can't talk about in some books that I will be able to talk about at the show You come to Liverpool quite frequently, what is it about the city that draws you here? I love it! There are loads of great places to go, everyone is so friendly and the girls all make such an effort with the way they look. Tell us about your new book It’s called PLAYING WITH FIRE. It’s coming out in October and it’s my 11thnovel. It features Indigo who is a celebrity events organiser so it’s full of glamorous glitzy parties and centres around a highly risky relationship she has with Connor, a club-owner. There are lots of twists and turns and as you’d expect from the title, sparks fly!!

Can you hint at any juicy bits Haha, no! Although actually I do have to be quite careful with juicy bits as I have a lot of young fans and I’m very conscious and respectful of that. What makes you happy? Being at home with my family. I’m a real home-body and would much prefer to be at home than out partying. Tell us about your campaign to stop online bullying, it is something Lifestyle magazine would love to support in anyway, (we already shared the petition
There are a lot of women in business who look up to you as a businesswoman, what is the best thing about running your own business empire? I love launching new things. I love having an idea that turns into a product that people go out and buy. It gives me such a sense of achievement. And what advice would you give to someone in business? Believe in yourself and what you want to achieve. Don’t let
anyone put you off. Work hard and you’ll get there! What do you find challenging as a mum as your kids grow up? Ha – like all mums, finding time for myself! With 5 kids, there are always so many demands on my time. I love all that to bits of course but I do need to ensure I can some ‘me-time’. You’re a fantastic mum, is this your greatest achievement would you say? 100%, yes! I love being a mum. Absolutely nothing can beat it. Do you follow a strict beauty regime as you get older or are you more relaxed? Contrary to what people might think, I’ve always been relaxed.
I don’t spend a fortune on creams and stuff. Andin fact I don’t really wear make-up. I do when I’m working but if I’m not then I don’t wear any.

Love Aesthetics' ethos has always been about providing the highest quality clinical, evidence based procedures at a reasonable price. After dedicating the last five years working fully in aesthetics I have found the best way to do this is by having a purpose built clinic at my home to reduce overheads. Due to the ever growing clientele we have now located to a larger home based premises to accommodate our growing needs. We are still based in West Derby and prices remain the same as does flexibility and the highest clinical care.

GOOD THINGS COME TO T H O S E T H AT S W E AT The latest health phenomenon sweeping the city with the Infrared Sauna Spa A traditional sauna works by pouring water on to hot coals to make steam, the steam heats the room to 100+ degrees. As the room is so hot and humid when you are in there the skin has no choice but to produce water to cool and protect its self.
Our infrared saunas work by the user being surrounded by Nano Carbon plates which omit Infrared light, the light penetrates deep into the body and warms the body’s core, so in an effect warms from the inside out. As the body’s core temperature increases the organ temperatures increase this instance being the
heart, as the heart temperature increases so does the rate which encourages more oxygen being taken in to the body and as the blood circulates through the heart it is warmed and oxygenated which helps improves circulation, lowering blood pressure, gets us burning calories and increasing our metabolism. but I know other people who weren't quite so lucky. Did you ever consider yourself disabled? As a child it never crossed my mind but going I to adulthood then yes I definitely felt that my stammer disabled me. It is known as a hidden disability and those who have a stammer can feel very alone-people can't see the difficulties they are going through.
Over one million children and young people in the UK suffer with a speech impediment. Adam Black, 28, who recently attended the National Diversity Awards in Liverpool suffered with a stammer for years . He decided to change his life and and tells Lifestyle about his journey to success... Why did you attend the National Diversity Awards in Liverpool? I was a finalist in the Role Model for Disability category. This was a major honour as the work I do around raising awareness of stammering was recognised. Tell us what it was like growing up with a stutter Growing up with a stutter was difficult. It held me back in every area of my life-I couldn't be who I wanted to be socially as I couldn't communicate how I wanted and I held back from answering questions in school even when I knew the answer. I also felt exhausted as I was always thinking ahead of how I could contribute to conversations and what words I could say- I never felt like I was living 'in the moment'. I was lucky that I had a nice group of friends and never went through too much teasing 22
Why did you decide to enrol on a speech therapy course? I had spoken to my careers advisor and told her that I wanted to become a teacher. She didn't laugh at me but pretty much dismissed it and changed the subject and I knew this was because of my stammering. At that point I decided to look for help and I found the McGuire Programme. The McGuire Programme is a therapy course for people who stutter run by people who stutter and it is unique for being that. They teach a physical tool for gaining control, a new way of breathing when speaking and they deal with the psychological aspects associated with stuttering, mainly not holding back. After my first course I had been inspired, I wasn't curedthere is no cure - but I had the tools to control my stutter and accept myself as a person who stutters. I no longer avoided speaking and was happy to speak on my own terms showing my listener that I'm a person who stutters. The McGuire Programme runs several courses across he UK and on the 1st-5th Novemberthere will be a course in Liverpool at the Mercure Liverpool Atlantic Tower Hotel. What skills did that give you? It has given me the skills to be who I want to be and not hide from my stammering. This is key, to accept your disability is the first step to improving your life around it. I can't change the fact I stutter but I can change how I feel about it. This is a skill I can transfer to other areas of my life-if you can't change it then make the best of it. Why was teaching your dream job? Teaching always held an allure to me as I like to help people. I enjoy working with young people and the buzz you get when you make a
connection with them helping hem to achieve something they couldn't before. What did it feel like to enrol on teacher training? Enrolling on teacher training was a really proud moment for me and my family. It was the collective effort of years of work improving my speech. I've been teaching now for 7 years and my speaking technique holds up in the classroom. What advise would you give to someone with a stutter? The message that I've always given to people who I meet who stutter is to embrace your quirks as they make you who you are. I hid away from my stutter and from speaking for far too long but after accepting my stutter and embracing it, it has led me to do things I only dreamt of doing. My advice to all people, not just those who stutter, is to embrace your quirks as they make you who you are. How do you feel about your life now compared to how it was a few years ago? My life is great now, I'm a happier personal nd a more honest person. I'm doing a dream job which I love where I feel I'm making a real difference. I have met and married anow amazing person and we have an incredible little boy. I was presented with a British Citizen Award in January for raising awareness of stammering, something I ever thought I'd ever be doing and certainly not something I'd be getting recognised for. What can you do now that you couldn’t before? I've spoken at academic conferences, made wedding speeches, and teach every day but it's also the little things like phoning a take away, getting my bus fare or just engaging in small chat. These are the things I avoided before and ow the things I relish.

Its been monumental for me the last couple of months as Ive been involved with an amazing docu-drama called ‘Against the Law’. Its to celebrate the fact that 50 years ago homosexuality was made partially legal. Before that people like me lived in fear, terror, wondering if we would be outed, blackmailed or even beaten up! This amazing programme has stunned the nation and I will be very surprised if its not up for awards.

You will see on the photo Im wearing as waistcoast – this was a present for me when Bob was alive and has lots of his quiz shows adorned on it ! His lovely daughter gave it me back after Bob died. 3) Stan Boardman – Can you believe Stan Boardman (they bombed our chippy) is going to be 80 years young very soon? I did panto with him & hes very michevious to work with! 4) Gino Dacampo – his new restaurant must be doing incredibly well – Ive been twice now and cant get in as its full even though I know the owner! 5) Echo & the Bunnymen – has discovered Im a Lizard ! irral chef Cole Hallsworth, 29, overcame a turbulent start to life to become a successful chef. He has now self published a book on Amazon, Split Milk, describing his roller coaster journey of violence and neglect to finding love and happiness. His book has been recognised by chefs around the world who have experienced similar. Cole, 29, took two and a half years to write the book and only sat down to pen his life story after a therapist suggested heshould write. Cole said, “I thought she was joking at first but she was not, so I did. I found it cathartic and I want to reach out to other chefs and people alike and everyone in my industry to tell them no matter how bad life gets, you can still pick yourself up and move forward.” Cole’s book tells the story of his early years where he witnessed domestic violence and gang violence, facing being homeless and his journey to training to be a chef and overcoming the industry obstacles. He said, “Most of my experiences are in the book and it’s quite gritty but that was my life and if it can inspire someone else then it’s a good thing. I am now writing another book which I am halfway through that focuses more closely on the kitchen life and behind the scenes of being a chef It’s all about the sex, drugs and rock and roll with fast women!’ Cole finally found happiness after several turbulent relationships with his wife, Charlotte, saying, “My wife almost did save me or I am sure I would be in a bad way. She is the best thing that has happened to me.’ Do I still love the industry.? Honestly. Its a love hate relationship which I can’t leave!
Most of my experiences are in the book
“
It’s in my veins now. However the best part of being a chef is meeting new people and making bonds also learning something new. You are never too old to learn something different to try something. “My proudest achievement was writing this book and proving people wrong. I was always the black sheep of the family and blamed for everything bad that ever happened. But I have clawed my way back and showed everyone that I am a worthy person, I have a talent and a career and I am not a bad person.’ ‘Sales of Split Milk, globally, are doing rather well. I could be better but it’s when chefs contact me from Dubai to tell me they enjoyed my book and they can relate to it as they are tackling their own demons.” We’re waiting for the film to be made!

retail arm, the digital revolution has made the entire history of recorded music so much more easily accessible to everyone over the last decade. That adolescent addiction of flicking through the racks of record shops, visually devouring sleeves and artwork for hours on end has been replaced by losing yourself in a more aurally engaging kind of way. Internet services like Spotify make it possible to research any type of unfamiliar music and it is now quite easy to investigate thoroughly in just a matter of days or even hours that which used to take months, years, and often, lifetimes of expensive and devoted dedication to properly explore. For somebody like me, who caters professionally for the full spectrum
Apart from being a timeless work of musical genius by Earth Wind & Fire, September is also the time of year when the long days of the wedding season begin to wind down for me over at Nuptial Grooves UK Ltd. The time of everyone’s lives have nearly all been had for another summer and I can now return to the pages of Lifestyle each month to share the love and the music. While it has all but destroyed the record industry and its attendant 32
of personal musical tastes, it is an invaluable and extremely useful tool. But, as if to confirm my longheld suspicion that this thing that we call ‘Life’, is nothing more than an endless series of contradictions, and that somebody, somewhere is having a little chuckle at our expense - I spend most of my personal time using this technology to explore and immerse myself in antique rhythm & blues recordings from the late 1940s and early 1950s; a kind of music which didn’t even rely on so much as a basic electrical power supply for its existence. So, while many will insist that technology is taking the Art and Soul away from music, there are also places where it is giving it back to us, if you want it and know where to look.
What are you up to at the moment? I am just finishing my radio show.
THE GOODLIFE
FESTIVAL As The Good Life Experience 15-17 September returns to Flintshire this month, We chat to one of the founders and musical star Cerys Matthews ahead of the big family event which is… well, just that. A Good Life Experience. It’s a place for children and adults of all ages to get back to nature and rediscover arts and crafts, music and literature, camping and all the fun of outdoor recreation. 34
And tell us about the Good Life Experience. It’s in its fourth year now and it’s a small festival which celebrates everything about the great British outdoors. It’s all about getting back to nature, chopping wood, carving, foraging for leaves, listening to music and just allowing children to roam around in a safe outdoor environment. But it’s not just for kids, it’s for everyone. Why did you set it up? I think it is because I am curious about nature and the outdoors. A lot of ids grow up in the suburbs and they’re surrounded by gadgets and technology all the time. It’s hard for parents to actually spend time with with their children as they’re all distracted. But they can come here where it’s a bit wild, a bit dangerous and a lot of fun too. What’s going on? Oh so much, we want people to get their hands dirty. There are workshops on everything; arts and crafts, cookery demos, they can indulge in the fairground, read books, listen to musical. You can learn how to make a campfire, carve spoons, there’s circus workshops. Really there’s just so much it’s a fantastic experience and stuff for all ages it’s impossible to be bored. Lots of people come and camp for the three days and we work with a lot of local B and Bs as well so there’s a real community feel to it.
Why is The Good Life Experience so special to you? I think it is because I am bringing nature back to people. In my work it can get very superficial and silly. Here there are no VIPs and everyone who attends are equal. Mums and dads muck in, there are axe makers …ooh so much too get involved in. I think there’s a real renaissance of people wanting to strip it back and let kids run in corn fields, let people feel free and feel really relaxed away from the hustle of everyday life back home. A lot of parents are knackered and this is a weekend where they come and chill and let the kids roam free. You have always been a festival goer. Do you think it will get as big as Glastonbury for example? I hope not! It’s a lovely festival and we don’t want it to go too commercial . It’s a festival for people to experience real life. We don’t want people selling things to them all day like you get as these huge festivals. I want people to come here and lose their interest in materialism . No one is impressed by status here. What inspires you? The world. I never cease to be amazed at the wonder of life and creation. And when a child puts their little hand in the palm of your hand, it’s magical. What makes you happy? When I am around a fire with my family and friends. The jam packed line up can be found at

SALT DOG SLIM’S 79 Seel Street Liverpool L1 4BB REVIEW BY Amanda Moss
atmosphere. Occasionally the cooking aroma from the kitchen would waft over enticing us to order a choice of ten hot dogs.
S ituated at the top of one of
Liverpool’s busiest streets for nightlife is Salt Dog Slim’s. It’s a small but chic bar with dark stripped wood flooring and red leather benches offering a unique taste of the American hot dog but with a British gastronomic twist. Where else serves hot dogs and nothing else. Nothing. Not even sides to accompany it. It’s a very clever concept with a down to earth attitude. Where else would a menu say “Just remember, be nice or **** off”! The beer and generously sized cocktails flowed freely as did the conversation with our friends over the thumping music. Time flew by as we soaked in the friendly
We selected the Texan BBQ; a bacon wrapped dog with pulled pork, BBQ sauce, white onions, pickles cajun seasoning and meat crumb. The Suicide dog was my personal favourite, just watching my husband’s face light up like a match after trying the “hot dog and f**king hot sauce”. This is my find of menu and my kind of place. No frills, no pretences, say it as it is.
mixed up some not alcoholic fruit cocktails at my request. Had I not had jet lag from returning home earlier that morning I would have surely stayed out longer. It was a fun night out with great friends and cheeky cocktails. I haven’t laughed so much in ages, it was the perfect tonic to a great night out and we will be sure to return. Be sure to pop in when you’re next in town
We also had Le Big Mac, a hot dog with white onions, cheese slices, big mac sauce, lettuce, pickles and meat crumb and a Cheese Eating Surrender Monkey which consisted of cheese slices, cheese sauce and pickles. Delicious, light and tasty and washed down with the biggest cocktails I have ever been served. The watermelon margarita was my favourite but I quite liked the Fancy Bastard as well. However as I was designated driver our bartender 37

SUPPORTING WETNOSE DAY FOR ANIMALS 29 SEPTEMBER Wetnose Day aims to encourage schools, workplaces, vets, groomers, dog clubs, riding schools, in fact everyone to pose with their nose and raise over ÂŁ100,000 for dedicated rescue centres nationwide and the animals they care for. Wetnose Day was established in 2000 by founders Andrea and Gavin Gamby-Boulger. Andrea said, "I was delighted to hear Sir Paul McCartney wanted to support Wetnose Day and pose with his nose!

Musician and environmental campaigner, Sir Paul McCartney has released a new picture of him "Posing with his Nose" in aid of Wetnose Day - along with much loved actor and dog lover Tom Hardy. Wetnose Day will be taking place across the UK on September 29th - October 1st 2017 to help promote the issue of animal welfare and to raise much needed funds to cover essential food and medical treatments for animals in desperate need in the UK. 40
Over the last few years Wetnose has been delighted to have fabulous endorsements and support from leading celebrity and animal campaigners including Paul O'Grady, Amanda Holden, Brian May and many, many more
WHAT THE CELEBRITIES SAY
This has enabled us to raise thousands of pounds for small and medium sized animal sanctuaries, ensuring food costs were covered and veterinary treatment went ahead for animals in desperate need".
.
"Society in general has, for a number of years, been under severe financial stress, which in turn has seen animal welfare suffer as some people may no longer be able to afford to look after their pets. Wetnose is plays its part in highlighting animal welfare in the UK and providing vital help and financial support for small animal welfare groups who are at the forefront of animal rescue and care in the UK". "Just think what a difference Wetnose Day could make to rescue centres across the UK, paying vets bills, buying several months of animal feed or helping with repairs to rescue centres across the UK. The knowledge and skills these animal rescue teams have is phenomenal. NOW, more than ever, is the time to help all animals in need", says Andrea Gamby-Boulger. Frontline Plus, the flea and tick treatment providers and main sponsors of Wetnose Day stated "Animal welfare is at the core of our business, so we are delighted to endorse, alongside Sir Paul McCartney, Wetnose Day.
The UK has hundreds, if not thousands of hard working volunteer rescue centres, and it's essential their work is supported to ensure animals are cared for in the manner they deserve, namely with respect, love and compassion." Nathan Flatman from Animed Direct, the UK's leading online animal pharmacy, stated "We are delighted to be supporting Andrea and her team in promoting Wetnose Day, raising the issues of animal welfare awareness and pet ownership. As pet owners ourselves, who serve thousands of pet customers every day, this campaign is essential and we urge everyone to pose with their nose!" Fundraisers across the country are now lined up to bungee jump, host sponsored dog walks, hold cake sales and wear the legendary Wetnoses to raise much needed funds for this wonderful UK organisation. For more information on how you can get involved or how you can get hold of our famous Wetnose, simply visit www.wetnoseanimalaid.com
"We're a nation of animal lovers, yet our animal sanctuaries are always full to bursting with ill-treated animals. For all of the animals who find their way to a Sanctuary this is a new start for them. So please do all you can to support Wetnose in the wonderful work they are doing. Your support does count very much." Brian May: "This fun day is an important part of the growing movement to give animals the respect we need to learn to give them. It is a moral necessity to change our attitudes to the other creatures on this planet, just as it was a moral necessity to abolish slavery ... and the very future of the Human race depends on making this change in our behaviour. I am honored to be a part of the Wetnose Day." Amanda Holden: "I love the idea of a Wetnose Day for animals and do hope we can make it as big as red nose day for humans. Many of the smaller animal sanctuaries are full to busting and need our help with the wonderful work they do against all the odds. Please join me and support those without a voice, join Wetnose and let's all make a real difference". Paul O'Grady "I think this Wetnose Day event is a terrific idea and long overdue, you know what I think of animals and this would go a long way to helping many smaller centres who need more support, yes

LIVERPOOL CHOSEN FOR INCLUSIVE CITIES PROJECT LIVERPOOL is one of five cities that will take part in an international project run by Oxford University aimed at helping new arrivals to integrate. The two-year programme – being run by the Global Exchange on Migration and Diversity – looks to support cities to improve their approach to helping arrivals from abroad to settle. It will draw on ideas and experience from within Europe and innovative approaches from cities in the United States as part of the highly acclaimed Welcoming America initiative. A local taskforce will be set up by the end of 2017 to put together and implement an action plan to help make sure newcomers and their neighbours integrate. Liverpool has been chosen because it has experienced significant migration over the last decade and has a diverse demographic and economic profile. Councillor Frank Hont, Cabinet member for housing, who will lead on the initiative, said: “Liverpool has a proud reputation dating back hundreds of years as a welcoming city and our population is growing at a rate we have not seen for many decades. “We’re fortunate in that there is lots of regeneration happening in communities right across Liverpool, but that can cause challenges as some places have seen rapid changes their population. “People understandably get nervous when they see the dynamics of their community changing, and in some parts of the city that has been considerable over the last decade or so. “Our job is to work with others to help communities through that process, whether their new neighbours are students or others moving here from both home and abroad. The Inclusive Cities programme has the potential to help us become a leading city in doing that.” It comes as the city council’s Cabinet has today approved the recommendations of a year-long look at community cohesion. A panel of stakeholders including the community and voluntary sector, Merseyside Police, Mersey Fire and Rescue Service and education representative have spent a year looking at the issue.
44
They have made a series of recommendations aimed at breaking down barriers between people of different backgrounds, faiths and races in the city, and make it as open and inclusive as it can be. They include: • Creating a campaign to promote local people’s identity whatever their background, • Continuous conversations with communities and encouraging people to come together to make a difference to their neighbourhoods • Creating a sense of belonging to Liverpool • Providing leadership that challenges issues that create tension and seek to divide Councillor Emily Spurrell, Cabinet member for Neighbourhoods and Community Safety, said: “There is already lots of good work going on through organisations such as
Merseyside Polonia, Asylum Link, our housing associations and the School of Sanctuary. What we want to do is help spread that wider and further and embed it throughout the city. “We can’t be complacent because, although people in Liverpool voted to remain in the EU, the vote for Brexit and events such as the international migrant crisis and terrorist attacks all have the potential to caused cause anxiety, nervousness and suspicion. “Like everywhere else, we have seen a rise in reported hate crime which is why it is so vital we work harder than ever to encourage cohesion, bust myths and promote and celebrate different cultures.” The council is planning to submit a bid to the Government’s ‘Controlling Migration Fund’ to secure funding to deliver some of the Community Cohesion report recommendations.

We caught up for 5 minutes as he was running for a train, ahead of his busy Autumn schedule. Do you miss being on the television? Not at all. It’s funny how when you’re a stand up you want to have a desk job on a panel show, and that’s what every comedian seems to want these days but it’s not me. I have no interest in that at all. I love speaking to a live audience and interacting with real people. Tell us about the show, it’s got quite a cult following don’t you think? Yes it’s something very personal and dear to me and it is the third part of a set of shows I have done. It’s a coming of age moment for me. The shed is where I spent most of my youth and it influenced me
greatly and I have a strong connection to the place. This is a play and can performed by other people, but it is very personal to me full of working class stories and collective memories What do you love about a live audience? They bring life to the show, they are part of the show and its very special to connect to people, there’s a real sense of belonging in the room. Do you enjoy going on tour? Yes, I wouldn’t do it if I didn’t. Were you surprised when you won the Guinness Book of Records for the most That happened completely by accident. We did it to annoy the police and we never set out to break any records. It was funny and I am proud of it, the rouble is when you set a reord, someone else wants to go and break it. And it was broken recently by a school in Hertfordshire and I was invited to present the award to them. The Red Shed, Wednesday 20 September at The Atkinson Ticket booking: 01704 533 333

BIRKENHEAD IS BLOOMIN’ MARVELLOUS • 27 Wirral entries for this year’s North West in Bloom competition • Birkenhead entries spurred on by last year’s positive feedback • Plans already being put in place for 2018 Wirral is blooming thanks to the many residents, community groups and organisations that have been working hard to create fantastic floral features to show how much they Love Wirral. The efforts have been so successful that 27 of these amazing transformations have now been entered into North West in Bloom’s annual competition. This is the second year that Birkenhead groups have entered the ‘In Bloom’ competition with residents spurred on by the positive feedback received last year not only from the judges but from the many residents and visitors who admired the displays. The projects showcased a huge amount of volunteer hours, and agencies going all out to improve local areas including shopping areas, , planting up of neighbourhood centres, and communal areas. One of the best outcomes is how
50
the projects have bought everyone together to improve areas residents live and work in. Over three days, Royal Horticultural Society judges visited Birkenhead examining the hard work and imagination that has gone into this year's many competition entries. They stopped at Water Street, Gautby Road, Bidston Rise, Blue Wood, Livingstone Street, Claughton, Oxton Gardens, Prenton, Birkenhead Park, the Inner Park, Beaconsfield Centre, St Pauls Rock Ferry, Williamson Art Gallery, YMCA, The Lauries, The Hive, Brakendale, Beechwood and Bidston to name a few. It’s not only Birkenhead that’s blooming.. After visiting Birkenhead, judges headed over to visit groups in Wallasey, Liscard and Seacombe to view their floral displays. Established groups in Wirral West and Wirral South have previously entered the competition and plans are already underway to increase Wirral’s entries next year. The judges met residents who have been involved in each project and were looking for entries that improve the local area through the imaginative use of trees, shrubs, flowers and landscaping, while also achieving a litter free and sustainable environment. Cllr Phillip Brightmore, Cabinet member for Environment, said: “In Bloom is such
a fantastic and well established initiative, it’s about more than plants and flowers, it’s about bringing the community together and not just for a couple of weeks of planting and tidying up, but throughout the year, encouraging everyone to become involved in their own local areas. “The results will be announced in November, so we’ll be keeping our fingers crossed until then. But we’re sure everyone will agree that all the projects look fantastic and everyone who has taken part is already a winner in my eyes.” Peter Fletcher, local resident from the Livingstone Street Centre said: “I haven’t got many gardening skills but it didn’t matter. I’ve really enjoyed being involved in developing the centre’s garden for the in bloom competition. We’ve grown vegetable and herbs and used them to make food for groups using the centre, and recycled all sorts of things to make planters for flowers.” Jo Burrell, Birkenhead Constituency Manager, added: “The projects are progressing each year and enthusiasm is increasing and the plans being discussed for next year are very exciting. Get in touch with us if you would like to get involved.”

BURRITO DA L E S T R E E T A new Mexican restaurant has opened on Dale Street. Changos Burritos have opened their second store on Dale Street, building on the great success of their Manchester city centre store. However, Changos offers a fresher, leaner and cleaner take on the classic dish for a speedy lunch packed full of flavour.
M CCOOLEYS MATHEW STREET STANLEY STREET McCooley's in Liverpool is opening a second massive new bar in the city centre. The sports and music bar already has a huge venue on Concert Square and now owners JSM Bars plan to open another branch dubbed McCooley's Mathew Street. Plans are underway to convert Café Sports Bar on Stanley Street, previously owned by Jamie Carragher, into McCooley's second site.
The fresh, modern Mexican restaurant offers generously sized burritos at reasonable prices right in the middle of Liverpool’s business district. Located in the former Sayers shop on Dale Street - the perfect spot for a quick lunch for office workers to dine in with or takeaway. Fully licensed diners can choose between the classic changos burrito, the low fat and healthier ‘athletico burrito’ or the solo burrito box (which comes without the flour tortilla). For more details check out www.changos.co.uk.
But JSM who already own Smokies on Mathew Street are planning to knock both sites together to create a 'super' bar. McCooley's Mathew Street will span two floors and play host to major sporting events and Irish parties just like McCooley's in Concert Square. It will be open seven days a week, with live music, big bands and an open mic night plus an Irish-inspired menu made up of traditional Pub classics with a twist including some favourites like tobacco onions, potato bread and taco sauce, served fresh and daily from 8am. Make sure to register at mccooleys.co.uk/mathew-street to receive a guaranteed invite to the opening. The new bar is expected to open at the end of September or the beginning of October.

ED I T OR ’ S L AS T WORD When did Autumn sneak up on us? I can’t believe it, this year is hurtling forward so fast! I am writing this from my holiday home in Cyprus, a place I retreat to every summer with my children. It’s my happy place, a place to reconnect with life, recharge energy and relax. so it’s a perfect opportunity to write about happiness. Our lives are as happy as we make them. You can go looking for drama and worry about everything or jump on the ride with enthusiasm and see where it takes you see. Those who choose the latter are much more confident. It’s a big month for my family, my youngest daughter starts reception, my other daughter starts high school and my eldest son goes into sixth form. I am excited for the adventures that await them. Things that make me happy: • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • •

Watching my children fall asleep Watching them wake up Seeing them smile Hearing the word “mum” Taking my dog for a walk Listening to the rain outside whilst sat in a hot bubbly bath Sipping a hot latte in the morning Setting a goal and achieving it Freshly washed sheets on all the beds Scented candles flickering over a roaring fire A roast dinner with lashings of gravy Seeing the boxes of magazines being delivered from the printer Dancing Catching my husband looking at me when he thinks I haven’t noticed Hearing my children laughing Seeing my feet in the warm sea through the clear water Driving along a coastal road with my hand dangling out of the window feeling the warm breeze through my fingers Charging my healing crystals Getting on an aeroplane Eating freshly baked cookies and not caring how many grammes of saturated fat are in them Trying out a new restaurant Steak and chips Buying a lottery ticket and dreaming of “what if….” Doing something that someone said wasn’t possible. Hearing the words, “I love you." Waking up everyday knowing I am alive and the day presents endless opportunities for me
Stay stylish
