Lifestyle NEWS RE-BIRTH OF CITY LANDMARK MOVES FORWARD THE WORK to transform Liverpool’s historic Royal Insurance Building into a stunning new hotel is gathering pace.

CYCLE HIRE OPERATOR ONBOARD FOR APRIL LAUNCH

The Royal Insurance Building, on the corner of Dale Street and North John Street in the city centre, has lain derelict for over 20 years, and hadbeen placed on the National Buildings at Risk Register.

LIVERPOOL is gearingup for its new cycle hire scheme with the appointment of an official operator.

Liverpool City Council stepped in to kick-start its redevelopment last April, purchasing the free hold of the building for £1.95 million. This resulted in £18 million of private investment in the project undertaken by Runcorn-based developer Ashall Property Ltd.

UK supplier Hour Bike Ltd hasbeen chosen to run the scheme – which is set to be the biggest in the UK outside London – after a competitive tender process.

Now, the building has a bright future, with Starwood Hotels & Resorts Worldwide Inc. on-board to bring their design-led Aloft brand to the building – a high-profile first for the city. Around 150 construction jobs are being created during the build, with over 50 full time equivalent jobs to be created once the hotel opens. The council will get an income stream from the 125 year lease on the building, which will exceed the cost of the free hold, and which can be ploughed back into services.

The scheme launching this April, with the roll-out of up to 100 bikes at 10 city centre stations. By July, there will be 500 bikes at 50 stations; with 1,000 bikes at more than 100 stations, across the city, by March 2015. The LSTF aims to reduce the number of journeys made by car, promote sustainable transport, and reduce congestion and greenhouse gasemissions. It also aims to enhance access to employment and other essential services and improve journey time and reliability.

RADIO CAROLINE NORTH The original pirate station will be broadcasting this month for 28 days starting next month to celebrate 50 years since the station first went on the air. It will broadcast from the LV 23 at Albert Dock, Liverpool. The Lightship wasbuilt in 8

1960 and the last manned vessel to serve Liverpool. The ship will be open to the public 10am to 6pm each day during the broadcast. Caroline North will be on air from 31st March 2014 to 27th April 2014 on 87.7FM; and available on the internet at carolinenorth.com.

CANCER RESEARCH PROJECTS AWARDED VITAL FUNDING

North West Cancer Research (NWCR) has announced that it is to invest nearly £900,000 in new, world-class cancer research projects.

T

he charity funds research across three main areas: Basic, Translational and Preventative at the Universities of Liverpool, Lancaster and Bangor. In March, following a detailed submission process at NWCR’s Scientific Committee meeting, seven new projects were awarded funding, totalling £872,321. The funded projects were peer reviewed by external

reviewers and then by members of the NWCR Scientific Committee which is comprised of leading professors, award-winning scientists and pioneering medical professionals. The funded projects will focus on down stream elements of kinases and their roles in cancer, further understanding of signalling pathways in cancer biology and development of new strategies to combat cancer. Another project is

an extension of previously funded research which identifies patients at risk of gastric cancer. Alternative treatments for leukemias are being investigated, as well as research into malignant melanoma - the most deadly of skin cancers. The charity also agreed to fund its first small clinical trial which will investigate chemotherapy treatment prior to surgery for patients with locally advanced bileduct cancer.

THE MONTH OF MADNESS In May over 50 people from Liverpool are undertaking the “The Month of Madness” in aid of Touched by an Angel. Starting on the 25th May 2 people are running Liverpool Marathon. Then a week later 25 will swim a mile in open water across Crosby Marina. On the 3rd weekend 12 will cycle 120 miles in Skegness followed by another 65 miles on the Sunday. The final weekend 24 take on the 3 peaks challenge. By climbing Ben Nevis in 5 hours then the following day a speed hike up and down Scafell Pike. Some would call them crazy for what they are about to embark on but I call them brave, ambitious and inspirational. 10

If you want to take part in the swimming challenge, there are a few places left, contact www.facebook.com/pages/Month-ofmadness Or you can show support by sponsoring them at www.justgiving.com/monthof madness Touched By An Angel is a charity set up in memory of Joseph Mitchell. h t i a F r e l a e H It takes listening to precisely five seconds of Paloma Faith’s comeback single to realise that you are already in the company of one of the best pop tracks that you are going to hear all year.

14

By the time it gets to the chorus of Can’t Rely on You, with its defiant stomp and backing vocals from the songs’ creator, hit-makerin-chief Pharrell Williams, it also becomes patently clear that Faith, reinvigorated and buoyant, is set to enjoy a bumper year. Can’t Rely on You is the lead track of her forthcoming third album A Perfect Contradiction, and her best yet: as equally upbeat and sassy as it is soulful, and with a positivity that’s impossible to resist. The inspiration, Faith says, came from not wanting to make a record as downbeat as its predecessor Fall to Grace, which documented failed relationships to mostly melancholy, ballad-like fare. “When I was touring the last album I got a bit bored of being upset,” Faith says. “I

Lifestyle celebrity think sometimes when you write sad songs you write them in a moment when it’s like therapy, but then when you’re singing them 18 months later it’s like picking off a scab. This time I knew I needed to inject some hope. There’s some heartache, but it’s got a hopeful vibe to it. And I’ve returned to my soul roots, working with people I’ve admired for a long time.” A Perfect Contradiction is an evocative title - where did that come from? “I mean perfect contradiction in terms of the last album, because that was melancholic, but also in everyday life. You can’t have real joy without real sadness. It extends to a conversation I had with Pharrell. He was asking me about myself and I said I feel an affinity with people who are a perfect mix of contradictions. And he said ‘do you think you are?’ and I said ‘yeah’ and then he told me I should call my album that. I went home and mulled it over; I decided it was a really good title, because it meant a lot of things. It’s to do with accepting difference within ourselves as well as other people and our experiences.” Faith worked with a host of names on A Perfect Contradiction (Raphael Saadiq, John Legend, Diane Warren) but it is inevitably the collaboration with Pharrell that is of most intrigue. “He approached me at a party to work with me and we wrote a couple of songs together, and as we got to know each other through that time he said that he had this song that he’d written that he’d been sitting on for ages. He said he thought it would suit me, and did I want to hear it. I was like ‘of course’, and I loved it. It totally has my name on it. “Pharrell is very nice, humble, and so likeable. He works very hard and throws a lot away, because he only wants the best to come out.” He is certainly is a happy fellow, and the go-to man for a smash hit, isn’t he?

ss

“Yes, but you want to hear the ones that don’t make it, though!” Faith is arguably as well known for her sense of style than she is for her music, and her appearance is a vital component of the entire songstress/fashion icon package. “For as long as I can remember I’ve had it drummed into me that presentation is important. My family is full of women who really make an effort. I’ve never been around people who just wear jeans and t-shirt. “In fact, the other day I was walking around Brick Lane with my mum, my aunt and my cousin. This girl came up and said ‘you four look like brilliantly dressed women; can I take a picture for my art project?’ She later wrote to me on Twitter later to say ‘sorry, I had no idea it was you!’ It was so funny.” But getting stopped in the street was partly what made Faith head across the Atlantic to make A Perfect Contradiction. “I do get stopped a lot – it’s flattering but it’s difficult to detach yourself. Ultimately, I wanted to write an album that was down to earth and about real issues, and I didn’t feel that my life was conducive to that over here. It’s not a realistic lifestyle to have being stopped by people all the time; it doesn’t promote a realistic attitude of life. People can’t relate to it.” After A Perfect Contradiction hits the shops in March, Faith says she can’t wait to get on the road and reinterpret the new songs for a live audience. “We haven’t planned it yet but we’ll hopefully be touring towards the end of the year. I am looking forward to going out and touring it - it’s a musician’s album. My band love it; they can’t wait to show off, and nor can I!”

Paloma Faith’s new album A Perfect Contradiction is out now.

Lifestyle RESTAURANT REVIEW

R

odizio style dining is now firmly established in Liverpool, its latest incarnation being Fazenda. Which can be found tucked away in the business half of town at exchange flags, a perfect local for those who wish to dine slightly afar from the madding crowd. The décor at Fazenda is warm with a distinctly chic Brazilian feel to it. Children are more than welcome, which is evident by the abundance of high chairs neatly stacked next to reception. If you have never been to a Rodizio restaurant before, the rules are pretty simple. On your table is a card that is red on one side and green on the other. Gaucho chefs walk round with cuts of rare meat and if your card is on green the chef calves some meat off the skewer for you at the table. If you need to have a bit of a breather, turn the card to red, simples. After a drink at the bar, 2 glasses of Sagres, a crisp and light Portuguese beer, we were led to our table where we chose our wine a white Catena Appellation Tupungato, which I would definitely recommend. Then the Fazenda Rodizio dining experience was explained. After which the waiter invited us 16

Fazenda review by Joy Lewis

to begin our gastro extravaganza by visiting the salad bar. Ahhhh the salad bar, this alone is a meal in itself. With over 30 different types of freshly prepared dishes to choose from you could be forgiven for forgetting that the main event is waiting back at the table for you. Here, I feel it is pertinent to point out that this is a marathon and not a sprint. Think Christmas Day dinner, there is much to get through and you don’t want to miss a single morsel. I can’t recall every single cut of meat that we tasted as there were quite a few. But what I can recall is that I had the best steak that I have ever had the pleasure of savouring. My favourite being the Filet Mignon, followed closely by the garlic and spicy sausages which were also a delightful and delicious mouthful. Would I recommend Fazenda? Yes, a resounding yes. In fact as my husband and I were sat enjoying our meal we were already discussing which of our friends to invite back with us. So we will be returning, with no doubt an army of hungry friends – just as soon as we find a willing babysitter.

Lifestyle CELEBRITY

17

Lifestyle FOOD COOKING WITH

SHERRIE

S

herrie Hewson had the chance to flaunt her cooking expertise in the second series of Celebrity MasterChef back in 2007, but it was a lesser-known fact that she was going into the show rather well prepared. Previously the proud owner of a restaurant in Surrey, Hewson already knew a thing or two about preparing a meal. Now she is serving up some of her favourite recipes in a new cookbook, Nana’s Kitchen. “I have two grandchildren, a three-year-old and a seven-year-old, and we love spending time with each other… there’s always something going on. One of the main things we do is cooking, mainly because it’s creative and there are so many different strands to it. I feel like it’s so educational for them… informative, involves numbers, and has a real physical aspect to it as well, which is a great way to get them interested.” In a time when home economics is very much a thing of the past, Sherrie wanted to try to produce a cookbook that leant on being fun rather than functional, as well as including good lessons about cooking, diet, and food wastage.

18

“What kids love is seeing something change,” she continues. “To see what was just a bunch of flour on the work surface turn into a cake, just by adding a dollop of butter and some milk – it’s a magical moment… a bit like watching a bulb grow in the ground. Admittedly, my kitchen is now always covered in flour, but I can handle the clean-up operation! It’s all about the

next generation seeing so much of how food comes together, rather than them just picking up vacuum-wrapped things from the supermarket.” Of course, with the MasterChef TV cameras rolling, cooking with fresh, simple ingredients is something Hewson also did under the watchful eyes of John Torode and Gregg Wallace. “I loved that show. It was the most terrifying thing I’ve ever done in my life, but I loved it. John and Gregg are so annoyingly inquisitive though,” she laughs, confessing, “In everything you do they are hovering around you. All you want to say is, ‘bugger off, I’m trying to cook here!’ You’re under such pressure but I would recommend the MasterChef experience it to anyone brave enough to go for it.” Nana’s Kitchen: Over 100 Delicious Family Recipes by Sherrie Hewson is available in hardback for £18.99 and published by Macmillan.

Lifestyle COMMUNITY FLORISTRY STUDENT TO COMPETE AT RHS CHELSEA FLOWER SHOW

H

ugh Baird Floristry student, Tammi Hargreaves, is set to compete at this year’s RHS Chelsea Flower Show after making it through the regional heats of the BFA Young Florist of the Year competition.

The talented twenty three year old from Allerton was one of ten Hugh Baird College students who were entered into the regional heats. Their brief was to create a floral collar for a guest to wear at the ‘Woodland Trust’ dinner dance. The collar had to comprise of a wide decorative band of flower and plant material and accessories, with at least two thirds of the finished design made of fresh flower or plant material. Judges were also looking for a high standard of design and technique and several of the College’s students scored highly. Tammi, who is studying towards a Level 3 Diploma in Floristry, earned the second highest score in her category, missing out on the top spot by just one point. The heats were made up of entries from professional florists, students and floristry tutors and the other high scorers from the regional heats may still have a chance to compete at Chelsea if those offered places are unable to attend.

intree Racecourse has announced that the Military Wives Choir will perform the National Anthem before The Crabbie’s Grand National on Saturday, April 5. Members of the choir from the Military Wives Choir Shawbury and Military Wives Choir Cosford, both near Shrewsbury, will lead Aintree in the traditional rendition of God Save the Queen before the big race. According to choir committee member and mother-of-two Sarah Davies, the opportunity is still sinking in. The Military Wives Choir was popularised by BBC TV show The Choir, where famed choirmaster Gareth Malone coached a group of Military Wives to perform in public. Following its success a charitable foundation was set up to help establish choirs at British Armed Forces bases at home and abroad and raise money for good causes. For the Military Wives Choir Shawbury, performing in front of a global TV audience of more than 600 million at The Crabbie’s Grand National will be their biggest show to date. 22

Jockey Club North West Regional Director John Baker said having the Military Wives Choirsing the National Anthem prior to The Crabbie’s Grand National was a privilege for the event. “The Military Wives Choir sounds fantastic, as anyone who has heard their recordings knows, and we are delighted they have agreed to perform at The Crabbie’s Grand National this year. “Having the National Anthem sung by the Choir is likely to be one of the most impactful and inspiring performances we have seen at Aintree, so we’re really looking forward to them entertaining the crowd.”

Altogether, Hoylake has staged the sport’s oldest Major Championship 11 times, and organisers expect large crowds once again when Phil Mickelson defends his title. “We are looking forward to returning to Royal Liverpool where there have been some wonderful Open Championships over the years,” said Johnnie ColeHamilton, The R&A’s Executive Director Championships. JANE BELLIS STEP INTO SPRING

M

akeup looks this season are really pretty and feminine with splashes of bold colour thrown in for an edgy look. We see a lot of healthy, glowing skin and bare eyes with just a touch of mascara and soft berry lips. Try our best selling Bellissimo Cherry Bomb cheek & lip tint £17.50 with its plumping gloss at one end for a fresh, healthy look. Another key makeup trend for spring is the fabulous bright orange lipstick! Create a real statement with minimalist eyes and strong bold lips – I like to recreate DKNY’s version seen on the catwalks which used Maybeline’s colour sensational vivids in electric orange mixed with neon red for a pout that says ‘POW’!

Hair & Makeup by Jane Bellis. Assistant Hair & Mua Holly Bellis. Photography by Mansys portraits. Models Amy Pulford & Lauren White. Location 34 Model 101 studio.

I also spotted a lot of strong black liquid eyeliner for those of you like myself who love that vintage ‘flick’. Get practicing those perfect lines (or come along to one of my Master classes as Liverpool’s Model 101!) so

you can show off your skills this spring! For those of you who love to experiment with colour – you are in for a real treat, as we’ve seen lots of bold statement lids in amazing shades of green and blue. My advice would be to keep the lips neutral here and let the eyes do the talking – and be careful to watch what you’re wearing so you don’t clash! A fabulous look for the braver among us!

HAIR When it comes to hair, stay bang on trend with gorgeous messy chignons and unkempt French twists. Add beautiful braids to soft updo’s to create an ultra feminine, ultra modern, easy to wear (and easy to do!) look. This season is extremely laid back with lots of down styles with centre partings and straight, shiny locks or soft messy waves. I find this so much easier to show people how to recreate at home when it’s not so structured and perfect as it seems to be ‘the messier the better’ right now so get playing! I will be holding some hair demo’s soon and posting some video tutorials to youtube so keep an eye out! My favourite product EVER for playing with messy updo’s is Sexy Hair’s Powder play. Just sprinkle a bit of this at the roots and it gives you fantastic hold with a matte finish and it’s reworkable so if you find it dropping just rough up your roots and you are good to go again! It’s one of my indispensable products at fashion shows and works on just about everyone! *Limited stock available for £9.95 see www.janebellis.com for details

Paloma Faith’s A Perfect Contradiction album review – Paloma Faith’s new album released in March on RCA Records

F

orget anything you have heard from Paloma Faith in the past. The artist who has always been proud to stand away from the pack musically and visually has delivered something new, a completely different sound. A Perfect Contradiction, has a positive vibe and funky dance feeling to most of its tracks, which makes quite a change for a Paloma Faith musical offering. Further- more and at the end of the album, I wasn’t deeply depressed, winner! The first song “Can’t Rely On You” was produced by musician of the moment Pharrell Williams. Without reading Pharrell’s name on the track listing it is unmistakably his sound. It is R&B funk, high energy and the kind of tune that makes you want to strut. This funky cool vibe is carried on for the next two tracks, Mouth to Mouth and Take Me. However, the next four tracks of the album Only Love Can Hurt Like This (Written by Dianne Warren), Other Woman (Produced by Plan B), Taste My Own Tears (Written with Stuart Matthewman) Trouble With My Baby and The Bigger You Love (The Harder You Fall) seem to take on a life of their own. All of a sudden the beats per minute get quite quick and Paloma’s voice, in parts, takes on

36

BY JOY LEWIS

that just sucked a helium balloon sound. Don’t get me wrong, the funky dance vibe is still there – it’s just a little frantic. The final three tracks are, in my opinion the best on the whole album and shouldn’t have been stuck out there at the end. The sound is positive, happy and with an edge to Ms Faith’s voice that feels triumphant in that Aretha Franklin Walk out the Door, kind of way. Even though in some places the subject matter in the lyrics is a little jarring, the positive sound to the music is never lost and these last three tracks bring A Perfect Contradiction back to being quite a good album. Paloma Faith’s A Perfect Contradiction album was released in March on RCA Records

AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 2 We’ve always known that Spider-Man’s most important battle has been within himself: the struggle between the ordinary obligations of Peter Parker and the extraordinary responsibilities of Spider-Man. But in The Amazing Spider-Man 2, Peter Parker finds that a greater conflict lies ahead. It’s great to be SpiderMan (Andrew Garfield). For Peter Parker, there’s no feeling quite like swinging between skyscrapers, embracing being the hero, and spending time with Gwen (Emma Stone). But being Spider-Man comes at a price: only Spider-Man can protect his fellow New Yorkers from the formidable villains that threaten the city. With the emergence of Electro (Jamie Foxx), Peter must confront a foe far more powerful than he. And as his old friend, Harry Osborn (Dane DeHaan), returns, Peter comes to realize that all of his enemies have one thing in common: OsCorp. Directed by Marc Webb. Produced by Avi Arad and Matt Tolmach. Screen Story and Screenplay by Alex Kurtzman & Roberto Orci & Jeff Pinkner. Based on the Marvel Comic Book by Stan Lee and Steve Ditko.

NOW SHOWING ‘300: Rise of an Empire' opens the next chapter in the story of mortal-turned-god Xerxes, using incredible CGI and effects to portray his latest battle against new enemy Themistokles; a Greek general intent on uniting Greece to defeat Xerxes and Persia once and for all. Following on from '300', the action is transferred to the sea in an epic naval struggle starring Rodrigo Santoro (The Last Stand) as Xerxes and Sullivan Stapleton (Gangster Squad) as Themistokles. '300: Rise of an Empire' is based on Frank Miller's graphic novel and directed by Noam Murro and is now showing at ODEON Liverpool ONE in 2D and 3D.

The Amazing Spider-Man 2 is released on 14th April at ODEON Liverpool ONE in 3D and IMAX 3D.

Lifestyle COMIC REVIEW

Interesting
Tymes Review by Joy Lewis

I

love comics, for me it is an art form in itself and with every page I fall deeper and deeper into the parallel universe that is unfolding. It pleases me greatly that comics and their characters are finally cool, hip and mainstream. No longer do us geeks have to hide what we’re reading when waiting for a train. Cue the latest comic that I have had the pleasure of reading, “Interesting Tymes” created and written by local writer David McCluskey. Designed to appeal to the younger audience and, as it happens 30 something magazine editors. “Interesting Tymes” is perfect bed time reading for adolescents. The writing style is Joss Whedon meets Poe meets Roald Dhal.

The art is by Andrew Morrice and is a mash up of original Beano, Viz and Asterix. I can’t recommend this comic enough - for both the ardent collector and beginner alike. But especially for somebody around 9 who is new to the genre as it would serve as a perfect gateway into the fevered world of the comic universe. You can get your hands on your own copy of “Interesting Tymes” at Worlds Apart Liverpool or visit: www.dammaged.com, or via www.facebook.com/interestingtymes

CHRIS EVANS RETURNS AS

THE ICONIC HERO CAPTAIN AMERICA IN MARVEL’S “CAPTAIN AMERICA: THEWINTER SOLDIER

Chris Evans reprises the role of Captain America for the third time in Marvel’s newest thrilling adventure, “Captain America: The Winter Soldier. This time around, there’s no World War II and no alien invasion of New York, in fact, this grounded thriller is a full-on action ride that show cases Steve Rogers/Captain America in a new light.

! & "'# $ ! & $ ! & ! ! & " ! !' ! ! & "'# ! ! " ! ! " It’s an honor that I getto be a part of it, but it is the masterminds of Marvel quarter backing these one changes and I’m just lucky enough to go on the ride.

!' ! $ $ ! !!

I’ve known Scarlett forover ten years now. She’s like a sister. We’ve done four movies now, and it’s just so nice having a history with someone off camera, because I think that bleeds on screen.

! & " # ! ! ! ! & " I had asked to be trainedin gymnastics. When I went and met with the Russos, one of the things we all agreed on was stepping up Cap’s fighting ability. In the first movie he had just achieved the strength, the power, the prowess, and we didn’t get the chance 40

& " ! ! ! ! ! I have read so much Captain America even prior to filming that I was already very familiar with the Falcon character anyway.

& " # ! ! $ " " ! No. I knew Marvel gets good people; they always have a way of attracting quality actors. They just couldn’t believe he was interested and neither could I. Then it just kind of happened. It was one of those shocks and delights.

I enjoyed working inthose period settings; I liked the guys that I was working with, the Howling Commandos, and I thought there’s probably a lot of stories to tell there, but you know, any way they go with it they’re going to find good, interesting stuff for the character to go through.

& " # ! "! $ ! ! ! I feel like I’m just kind of starting to. These Marvel movies have been some of my favourites that I’ve made, and you start to realize that it does do something for people. It’s nice to see people affected or give them an opportunity to escape and just enjoy a fun ride. It’s a good feeling and it’s something I’m taking more seriously these days.

alton Borough Council brings a little Hans Christian Andersen magic to The Brindley when you are invited to join Ballet Theatre UK for a dramatic re-telling of all-time favourite The Little Mermaid next month. The Mermaid falls in love with a human and gives up everything to win his love. The kind hearted Little Mermaid rescues the Prince during a storm at sea, and begins a journey that takes her far from her home beneath the waves. Determined to pursue her love on to the shore she makes a bargain with an evil Sea Witch, but it comes at a heavy price.

Ballet Theatre UK’s charming and poignant ballet explores the nature of longing, how making choices have lasting consequences and how goodness can be rewarded in unexpected ways. The desserts alone are to die for! Liverpool Uncooked events offer people the opportunity to try something tasty, new and affordable. QUINTA BONITA

Lifestyle TRAVEL

- AN ALGARVEAN GEM! Ardent globetrotter, John Carter - long-time presenter of the Wish You Were Here television programme - shares the many delights of Quinta Bonita, one of his favourite hotels in the glorious Algarve.

A

s the years roll by, a traveller builds up a huge store of memories. One region more than any other provides a host of great memories. That region is the Algarve in Southern Portugal. Where I have, enjoyed many splendid family holidays. “Quinta” is the Portuguese for farm, though today the word applies to the farm house which has been converted into a smart property for rent or sale. Exactly the kind of property we used. Quinta Bonita is just such a place, converted in 1972, purchased by the Kortekaas family nine years later, and used by them for several years until they had to decide whether to rent it, sell it, or find some other use for it. Fortunately they did find that third way and converted the place into a small hotel - the kind the travel trade calls “boutique”. Run by Chantelle Kortekaas and her partner Fraser, it is located in its own extensive grounds a little distance above the main road near the resort of Praia da Luz. It has eight suites, each furnished in a beautifully distinctive style with en suite bathrooms and such amenities as hair dryers, free wifi, coffee and tea making facilities, a mini bar,

52

and television and DVD players. Chantelle is an excellent hostess. Fraser is a magnificent chef. It follows that guests are soon relaxing into a “home away from home” mood, and enjoying sumptuous breakfasts. The hotel is a perfect base for touring the region by hire-car with fascinating sites like Lagos, Silves, Monchique and Sagres (famed for Henry the Navigator) within easy striking distance. Being such an accomplished chef when I stayed there shortly after the hotel opened, I suggested he might occasionally provide an evening meal. Having extended their already sizeable terrace, Chantelle and Fraser are now able to cater for nonresidents, with groups of up to 60 gathering for celebrations including weddings. Quinta Bonita certainly lives up to its name ‘‘Beautiful Farm’ with its rustic but sophisticated charm complemented by superb, convivial hosts. Rates start from UKL85 per room including breakfast and afternoon tea with cake daily www.boutiquehotelalgarve.com for further information or call +351282762135

RACE FOR LIFE WOMEN who fancy doing something amazing this summer should join the fight against cancer by signing up to Race for Life. Cancer Research UK needs as many women as possible to make a defiant stand against the disease by taking part in the womenonly 5 or 10K Race for Life events taking place throughout Merseyside in June and July. Cancer Research UK’s Race for Life events, in partnership with Tesco, raise millions of pounds every year to help beat cancer sooner. Maria Montgomery, Cancer Research UK’s Merseyside events manager, said: “We’re calling on an army of feisty females to help us stop cancer in its tracks. Race for Life events are not about being fit or fast. Instead, they are an amazing way to celebrate life but also remember those who have been lost to the disease.” Although the number of people being diagnosed with cancer is going up largely due to the fact that people are living longer and cancer is predominantly a disease 58

of old age –survival rates have doubled since the 1970s. Cancer Research UK’s work has been at the heart of that progress. Thousands of men, women and children across the North West are alive today because of research and that’s why we need you to sign up to Race for Life today.” Cancer Research UK receives no Government funding for its ground-breaking work but, with help from the people just like you, the charity intends to bring forward the day when all cancers are cured. Maria added: “More people are surviving cancer than ever before. But while we’re heading in the right direction, too many lives are still being lost to the disease. Sadly, most of us know someone whose life has been touched by cancer and this really brings home how much more work there is to do.” Race for Life events will be held at Southport, Aintree Racecourse, Sefton Park, Birkenhead Park in the Wirral and Haydock Racecourse.

INCLUSIVE SPORT PROGRAMME UNDERWAY IN LIVERPOOL

A

NEW initiative to encourage disabled people to get sporty has started in Liverpool.

More than 70 people have joined the ‘Active Me’ programme which began in December 2013 and aims to open up opportunities foradults with disabilities to get involved in a range of sporting activities. Figures show that only 22.6 per cent of people – around 3,200 - living in Liverpool with a limiting disability are involved in physical exercise once a week. The aim of this programme is to inspire and motivate disabled people to take up a sport or physical activity such asathletics, dance, badminton and swimming. There are currently six sessions each week taking place at Lifestyles Ellergreen, Everton Park, Garston, Peter Lloyd and Walton. A team of ‘Activators’ are on hand who will give one-on-one support to participants interested in accessing a particular sport, building their confidence and being on hand to give them advice and help them become as sporty as possible.

Plans are in place to also recruit Sports Buddiesto offer initial support to anyone joining a sports club for the first time. And, to make sure the new initiative is as accessible as possible, each session will cost just £2 and the first session is free. Some of the newly signed-up participants will take part in showing off their new sporting skills in a handball match on Tuesday (4 March) a tLifestyles Ellergreen in Norris Green. Assistant Mayor and Cabinetmember for leisure, Councillor Wendy Simon, said: “We want to be able to eradicate any barriers which could prevent people with disabilities taking up a sport, and support them in trying something which may be new to them “ Through Active Me, we want to see an increase in the number of people involved inphysical activity every week. We’re delighted to have so many have signed upsince December, and hope to encourage even more to take part. We’re committed to increasing inclusive sports participation at every level and with this new initiative hope to create a legacy of life long sport for disabled people.” 59

PHILLIP’S

DIY... Hello Lifestyle Readers! Last month I had the privilege of attending the 5th Annual Liverpool Bierkeller Lifestyle awards at Liverpool Football Club which was a fantastic celebration of our own city. Over 300 of Liverpool’s best and brightest were in attendance including local business owners, celebrities and the Lord Mayor of Liverpool. I had the honour of receiving the ‘Best Personality’ award which capped off a fantastic evening and really meant a lot to me. I attended Toolfair in Harrogate on behalf of Swedish workwear manufacturer Blåkläder to showcase their fantastic product range. Toolfair is a ‘hands-on’ event where trade users of tools can see and try out first hand what’s new in power tools and hand tools. Blåkläder create the highest quality products for hardworking people up and down the country and it is always a pleasure to support them at events such as this one. As regular readers will know, one of my greatest passions is developing and renovating properties and my latest project in Newport is nearing completion. It is always a pleasure to see a property transform over time and see all your hard work paying off and it is one of the main reasons I started in the building trade all those years ago. I will also have an exciting announcement about a new project I have been working on in the coming months so watch this space! I am always pleased to keep you updated on what I’m up to and look forward to telling you about my latest projects. Until next time.. Until next time… All the best,

RE-POINTING A GARDEN WALL TOOLS/MATERIALS t 18V CORDLESS GRINDER t STONE BLADES t DUST MASK t SAFETY SPECS t POINTING TROWEL t BUCKET t SAND t CEMENT Walls can become structurally unsound if they are not maintained well. This can have an impact on the value, safety and the stability of your property. When your pointing has start to wear out and crumble away you are left with very noticeable gaps between the perpendiculars of the bricks. Ensuring you wear safety specs and a dust mask, use your small 4 inch grinder to grind out the existing defected cement to an equal depth of about 25mm. (would recommend shots with mask and specs). Dust down the wall and you are ready to start pointing. Mix your sand and cement using a 4 sand and 1 cement ratio. Apply into grooves using a pointing trowel forcing the mixed mortar into all available perps. Smoothing off the edge of trowel leaving to dry for about ten minutes before finally striking a neat line across the face of the new pointing with the sharp edge of the trowel. Top tip; just aim to do 1 square metre at a time, to avoid it going off too quickly before striking your lines in place. Top tip; measure the mixtures accurately - this way you don’t get a change in shade / color of the cement.

JAGUAR XE to take the flight to the BMW 3 Series

J

aguar has revealed that it’s fourth coming compact executive saloon will be called the XE, the small and sporty sedan is planned to rival the BMW 3-Series and Mercedes-Benz C-Class. The XE will be powered by a new family of petrol and diesel Jaguar engines, known as Ingenium. The XE will use four-cylinder versions of these units, which will be built at a new facility in the UK. The range is said to incorporate one model that will do 186mph, and another with CO2 emissions lower than 100g/km.

RENAULT TWINGO

F

irst they revisited and reinvented the Clio and now Renault has taken a fresh, bold look at Twingo. Twenty years after the introduction of the original, Renault is proud to take the wraps off the third generation of its small city car which has undergone an in-depth transformation. In addition to its cheerful expression, New Twingo is available in a choice of four body colours and is packed with innovations. Extensive personalisation opportunities are naturally part of the programme. It’s more of a city/family car. It’s new engine promises a nippy ride – perfect for getting the kids from A to B fast, but small enough to get a decent parking space when you get there. The engine is now at the rear – this apparently makes the Twingo particularly roomy thanks to the 13cm that have added to its cabin length, even though the newcomer’s overall length

64

has been shortened by 10cm. It’s practical, thanks to it’s five-door architecture, clever stowage solutions, totally flat floor and a surprisingly long maximum load length of 2.20m. It is the only city car capable of carrying a boxed Swedish book shelf…

Lifestyle MOTORING The New AUDI TT

T

he TT has come along way. The first model, released over ten years ago was billed as a hairdressers car. Since then the car has shed that image all together, now the compact sports car is cool, super stylish and very very aspirational. The 3rd generation TT revealed a few weeks ago in Geneva, sees a more cutting edge design reminiscent of the R8. The Front end now has dominant horizontals, giving it’s appearance a much harder more masculine feel. The single frame is broader and flatter, with two contours forming a V-pattern over the engine hood. The position of the four rings is also new, and now in the same place as the R8.

A New 4C ALFA ROMEO SPIDER The Alfa – the ultimate car for any petrol head, and the 4C Spider is the ultimate car for - well just about anybody really, it is simply stunning. The Alfa Romeo 4C Spider Design Preview made its world début at the 2014 Geneva Motor Show, previewed a new model scheduled to go into production in early 2015. Designed by the Alfa Romeo Style Centre, the Alfa Romeo 4C Spider design takes full advantage of the ultra-rigid construction and distinctive design of the coupé to produce a Spider in the truest sense of the Alfa Romeo tradition - a car that brings the driving experience into even sharper focus by allowing the sounds and sensations

of performance to fill the cabin and stir the driver’s soul still further. Structural reinforcement required by safety regulations for open-top vehicles means that the Spider inevitably weighs slightly more than the Alfa Romeo 4C coupé, but thanks to the use of carbon fibre for the rollover bars, spoilers and windscreen frame, as well as the adoption of a lightweight canvas soft top and the replacement of the glass rear screen with a continuation of the SMC* bodywork, the 4C’s structural rigidity, mechanical purity and low weight philosophy are not compromised. 65

Lifestyle THE LAST WORD WITH AMANDA MOSS

Hello April!

moment for me because I have stuck to my vision and never waivered in my belief that it could be a success. People tried to steer me away and it has been a huge experience learning to run your own business. But I couldn’t have it any other way now. The magazine supports not only my family but others as well. If there is one piece of advice I would give anyone starting in business is be true to yourself and keep moving forward. I have been described as ruthless but I think it is mistaken for ambitious. Remember, no one has the power to shatter your dreams unless you give it to them. Have a fantastic month and as always, stay stylish,

A

s the sun shines down on our wonderful city I am finally taking a break and having the month off with some delayed maternity leave! But of course I couldn’t sign off without having the last word as always. It’s a celebration packed month for me as I look forward to my son’s barmitzvah/ daughter’s batmitzvah. My friends from all over the country will be heading to our fabulous city to party in style at Jury’s Inn, the venue chosen because of it’s lovely backdrop to the waterfront. And having just about recovered from the Lifestyle Awards, we’re doing it all over again with the Liverpool Fashion & Beauty Awards. Due to demand and to the unrivalled talent pool in the city we have decided to award the best of the beautiful and once again showcase to the rest of the country how stylish we are, so expect a (glitter) ball in July. Against all odds we celebrate our sixth birthday this issue. It is an immensely proud 66

PIONEERING WEIGHT LOSS PROGRAMME LAUNCHES IN LIVERPOOL

S

ound Physique have helped many people gain more streamlined bodies, removing even stubborn pockets of fatty tissue without effecting underlying muscle. It’s non invasive, it’s completely painless, does not cause scarring and cuts out many of the health risks too. Our new clinic in Liverpool offers this highly effective procedure which, along with diet and exercise, can transform your shape, creating visible results quickly and safely. Just one session has been shown to remove up to a pound of fat or 1.5 inches of the area being treated. It also tightens skin during the procedure so there’s none of that crinkling so prevalent with other methods. So how does it work? In a similar way to a conventional ultrasound scan, the liposuction uses high frequency ultrasonic waves to literally ‘melt’ fat, which then passes out of the body through the lymphatic system over the following 2 to 3 weeks. The whole procedure is carried out in a comfortable treatment room. You don’t need an anaesthetic and have no unpleasant side effects – just a slimmer new you with no unsightly bulges! Clinic director Irene George says: “We emphasise on people getting the very best possible results inside and out so we give them all the tools they need to not just remove fat cells now but keep fit and healthy for the rest of their lives. Imagine if you were told 20 years ago you should never need to yo yo diet again and never worry about food, well now we are saying that. We provide all the education you need for the future”.
