Lifestyle EDITOR'S LETTER

A note from our editor...

Hello lovely Lifestyle readers!

H

ello lovely Lifestyle readers. As I type this the sun has his hat on, hip hip hip horray! I love May with its promise of light nights, bbqs and lazy summer days spent in the garden hanging with my boys. I’m going to be a busy girl this month, as I air my summer dresses in anticipation of a great summer, operation midriff is now in full throttle. I’ve joined an online slimmers club and signed up for Race for Life in Sefton Park in July. So if you see me in training, very sweaty and red faced, give me a thumbs up or oxygen, which-ever is most appropriate at the time. In this, ridiculously fabulous issue, we have interviews with Katy Perry, Kian Egan and Marcus Collins. Oh and full page review for Damon Albans first solo album “ Everyday Robots.” We also have competitions for an Xbox 1, and tickets for the Wickerman festival in July. And just in case you have forgotten that there are another 2 bank holidays this month – we have inspiration on what to do with those extra days off – be it for grown-ups or the small people in our lives. We also have all the latest news for Liverpool’s famous International Tennis Tournament, the Golf 4

Open and Race for Life. Our usual pages for property, shopping, beauty, music, food and clubbing are all there too, so there really is something for everybody. Hope everybody has a good month Lots of love,

Giant event to take over city park THE RETURN of the giants this

summer will see them exploring Kensington as part of their latest Liverpool adventure.

NO SALE ON THE BOMBED OUT CHURCH MAYOR of Liverpool Joe

Anderson wants a social enterprise to be set up to secure the future of St Luke’s Church.

M

ayor Anderson said: “I have been clear that it was never my intention to sell St Luke’s Church – it is a building which is extremely important to me personally and I would never do anything to jeopardise its legacy or status.” “We have now decided not to proceed with the proposals to develop a scheme inside the site. They were visionary and could have been economically viable, but I believe they don’t represent what I or the public would want.” “The site requires a significant amount spending on it to secure the safety of the structure, so we have also had some very early positive discussions with the Arts Council about the possibility of applying for funding.”

et to be the UK’s flagship 2014 World War One commemoration event, Memories of August 1914, welcomes back the Little Girl Giant and her faithful pet dog Xolo in a special event marking the outbreak of the Great War. The entire event runs from 23-27 July (with the main action taking place from the 25-27) and is expected to be the largest ever cultural event to ever take place in Newsham Park. The beautiful Grade II Victorian Park will be the sleep-over location for the giant visitors on the Friday night with the mesmerising marionettes exploring the streets around Gardener’s Drive and Sheil Road. As with the 2012 Sea Odyssey event, it is hoped that by taking some of the activity out of the main city centre areas Memories will shine a light on areas outside of the city centre connecting with those communities and showcasing the potential development and investment opportunities.

Lifestyle CELEBRITY INTERVIEW

katy perry

Katy Perry, Princess of Pop, or is she now the Queen? She is bringing THE PRISMATIC WORLD TOUR to Echo Arena on 21 May in support of her second UK #1 album, PRISM.

14

Lifestyle CELEBRITY INTERVIEW There are over 100 dates on the Prismatic World Tour, what kind of home comforts do you take on tour - how do you stay sane doing that amount of shows?

It’s really about the people I keep around me and their energy. I’m bringing most of the same crew from the last California Dreams tour. I’m quite loyal, and if I find a good person, I keep them forever! I’ve got an incredible traveling circus that I like to make incredible memories with. I’ve kind of routed this tour like an old rock group that has a family and kids and a hip problem! I routed it so I can really enjoy myself along the way and have experiences and make memories, so that when I do go to a city, maybe I’ve had an incredible experience there, and I then have more to say on stage as I think it’s so impersonal that when you get on that stage the only thing you can say is, “Hello Liverpool…” I mean, what about Liverpool? I should know exactly what Liverpool is like, what’s the coolest pubs, where the best fish n chips are, I like to go out and find out that stuff. I’m an adventure junkie when I’m on tour. The tour is massive but it really is just a road trip in disguise.

Are you planning to do a lot more sight seeing at the places you are visiting?

I definitely take in the cities; we always bring bikes on tour and cycle all around to find the best parks. In the UK, there are some beautiful old historic parks. I’m so into history and so into culture – I dive right into that stuff. Sometimes when we go bike riding the day before or the morning of a show, we take some tickets and stop along the way in coffee shops and places and give them away, secretly - but I wear a hat and sunglasses so you don't really know that it’s me!

Each of your albums reflects a personal journey, a time and place of where you are in your life with a different vision and tone. Do you think it’s important for you to have this reflected in your artistic output?

It’s normal for me; there’s no other way I know how to write. I only really know how to write in my voice and what I’ve gone through, and my life journey is what I draw inspiration from. Really, I’m a student of life and an observer of life, and that is where I get a lot of my ideas. Being an observer, being present, watching and listening, which includes to my own thoughts, and when I’m doing that, I grab little creative nuggets that happen to flow into my mind. I think that people relate to the vulnerability and honesty I try to bring into the songs, but some aren’t that deep some are just for going out, getting ready, putting makeup on. There’s a variety of songs always in my records because I feel quite a variety of emotions.

Is there a particular song of which you are most proud?

On a commercial level, ‘Roar’ has been really much bigger than I ever could have dreamed, and I get a lot of incredible stories from that. On a more super-fan level, kids really like ‘By The Grace of God’ as I’ve heard that it helps kids feel as if they aren’t so alone in whatever situation they are going through. I think the willingness to share and be open helps people feel safer and not alone.

On tour are we going to hear you ‘Roar’?

Ohh yes! Oh yes you will. Basically, if you are coming to see me on tour I will give you one hint – do not be late, because you do not want to miss the opening!

Cat Loving Men Get

Lifestyle PETS

The Girls

M

en who want to improve their chances with the ladies should consider palling up with a feline friend to help attract a partner, according to a new survey out recently. Leading feline welfare charity Cats Protection found that women think cat-loving men possess many qualities they find attractive when looking for love. The research, found that six in 10 women across the UK think men who own cats are more caring, making them more appealing as a partner. And far from being seen as wimpy, cat ownership appears to be a manly quality as just 27% of women think cat-owning men are soppy. Star of ‘The Vampire Diaries’ Ian Somerhalder is not short of female admirers and the photograph Ian has donated to Cats Protection to celebrate Valentine’s Day earlier this year, perhaps shows why – the cute image of him cuddling his cat Moke definitely shows his caring side! Another TV hunk, BBC Newsround presenter, Ricky Boleto, agrees with the findings, commenting “If you're short of a date consider getting a cat. Apart from their many good qualities, the research shows that cats can make a man more attractive to women. Just ask my fiancé, whenever she sees me chilling with Bella the cat, she wants to curl up next to me! Bella brings out my soft and loving side. It works every time!” 18

“IF YOU’RE SHORT OF A DATE CONSIDER GETTING A CAT.” The research also found that: t Nearly half of women think having a cat enhances human relationships and that men who own cats are kinder and more loving. t Among both men and women, the middleaged (45-54 year olds) are more likely to see the benefits of cat ownership in a relationship with 50% believing a cat in the house improves relationships. Men (or women) wishing to adopt a cat can visit the charity’s website at www. cats.org.uk or call the charity’s helpline on 03000 12 12 12 to find out more.

Lifestyle PARENTING

The end of the Super-Mum by Joy Lewis

“Super-mum”. The very phrase immediately conjures up exhausting images. Highly over-used and places unnecessary pressure on mothers and their expected roles in society. So what exactly is a ‘Supermum’? SM’s are expected to raise perfect, adorable and well-mannered, healthy children, effortlessly juggle the demands of family life, cook like their life depends on it with Paleo/ lowsugar/ fashionable/ exquisite recipes, look devastingly fabulous at all times and maintain that gorgeous size 8-10 figure. They must also be witty, charismatic, host umpteen dinner parties with scintillating intellectual conversations about ‘trending’ hot topics and politics, be a ‘socialista’, run pristine and whistle clean living quarters – all while still holding down their high flying careers. We are now witness to this phrase everywhere. You only have to Google the term and you will see what we are getting at. Exhausting? Absolutely. Come on girls, we all know this woman only exists in fairy tales and Stepford Wives remakes. How did we let this phrase enter not only our vocab but every day vernacular? Yes we all want to be the best parents that we can be - but sustain all of the above and keep up with current affairs and a clean house? I mean, come on! Don’t get me wrong PT – pre twins, I was going to be the Super Mum. Everything was going to be organic. I was always going to be on time. I was going to be back in my skinny jeans with manicured nails and walk

around with my perfectly behaved children with a serene smile upon my face. Reality soon hit. Don’t get me wrong, I get up every day and do my best for my adorable but sometimes naughty two year old twins. But my nail varnish is chipped and I have done the sniff test on whatever rag I am wearing. The upside is – we are all happy and always laughing. Thankfully there is a brand new wave and emergence of women on the block who seem to be a little more discerning about the ‘real’ parenting and lifestyle deal. The mother who has less of a ‘try-hard’/’must-do’ attitude and one who is more motivated by a gentler balance in her life which enables her to truly engage with life and enjoy parenthood at the same time. She doesn’t conform to any one category or feel pressure to be this or that. Phew thank god – there are more women out there like me!

Lifestyle CELEBRITY INTERVIEW

GARY BARLOW. “HE GAVE ME THE BEST ADVICE.”

AMANDA MOSS CHATS TO

Marcus collins Images by Jurga Skeirytė 22

Lifestyle CELEBRITY INTERVIEW

I

get a text from Marcus Collins on a sunny spring morning to say he is just leaving. It's a 20 minute journey yet 40 minutes later he hasn't arrived. He texts me again, apologising profusely but I am in no rush, it is a lovely day and his manager has arranged this so that my daughters, who are huge fans, can meet him. He turns up ready for the camera looking incredibly well groomed, apologising all the time but it's fine. There's something unnerving interviewing a man with more immaculate hair and better make up than you. And have I mentioned his impeccable manners? He had been briefed about the girls attending and he made a huge fuss of them, posing for pics with their ipods and phone.

He was en route to London for a party with his partner, Robin Windsor, a dancer on Strictly Come Dancing so we started chatting. This didn't feel like an interview but rather a catch up with coffee with an old mate so I started by asking him what his most memorable interview was. A cheeky smile crept across his face and he related his time on Chatty Man with Alan Carr. "Alan is a really lovely guy," he said, "And he made me feel so comfortable that I actually forgot where I was and I should have kept my mouth shut over something. The next minute I am saying stuff and it's in about five newspapers the next day. I was like 'OMG! All I can say is that I had to apologise to Gok". Unlike other X Factor contestants Marcus has

rarely been out of the headlines since he was runner up on series eight of the show. He has enjoyed top ten chart success with his debut album and won Best Newcomer Award for his performance in Hairspray on its UK tour last year. He has some exciting projects in the pipeline, currently co writing his new album and he is also hunting for premises for his salon that he hopes to open as well with fellow celebrity hairdresser Aidee Phelan. "I want to do it properly," he sad, "I am not rushing into it but it absolutely has to look right. It's something I feel very strongly about, it's like my new album. It's all about emotion and self sacrifice and being a positive person. People thought I rushed the last album so I am absolutely making sure I take my time this time." It appears he has taken on board comments from his X Factor mentor Gary Barlow. "He gave me my best advice," Marcus said, "He told me to always smile. People don't want to watch performers who are miserable, they want to see upbeat singers. I am always smiling." And he has plenty to smile about with a couple of cruises, a trip to New York this month and a spell in a musical, West End Men which he is working on and will perform in Asia later in the year. Such a genuinely warm and talented guy, he deserves all his success and all of us at Lifestyle wish him well.

TV

and radio presenters Donna Air, Jameela Jamil and Edith Bowman show it’s cancer’s turn to be afraid with powerful and defiant messages tattooed on their bodies to support Cancer Research UK’s Race for Life events. The bold gutsy words ‘Cancer, we’re coming to get you’ inked on each of their bodies in individual designs capture the fighting spirit of Race for Life and give a rallying cry to all women across the UK to sign up to their local event and join the formidable army to hit cancer where it hurts! Every pound raised at almost 300 Race for Life events this summer will help fund vital research to save more lives and help beat cancer sooner. Run, walk or dance at Race for Life: www.raceforlife.org 28

Donna Air says: ‘I am incredibly proud to be supporting Cancer Research UK’s Race for Life this year. Cancer has affected too many of our loved ones and it’s time to fight back! Please encourage all your friends and family to take part, cheer you on or sponsor you and we can prove why cancer should be the one that’s scared!’ Jameela Jamil says: ‘Regardless of your age or how fit you are, everyone can take part or sponsor someone. The money raised is vital to help beat this horrible disease. So gather your girls, sign up, and let’s take the fight to cancer!’ Edith Bowman says: ‘My family is not alone in being greatly affected by cancer. Sadly, it is something that touches us all but Cancer Research UK’s Race for Life gives us the opportunity to send the defiant message that it is cancer’s turn to be afraid!’

Hello Sailor! ‘ R eal Glamour for Real Wo m e n ’

O

ne of my favourite shoots to date, with the very talented Tanya Davies photographer, Lowri Pope on fabulous hair and the beautiful Stacy Smallman as our model – what a cool all female team we made! You know how i’m on a crusade to bring back real glamour for real women, well this creative idea really caught my attention when Tanya and Lowri started planning, so obviously I wanted in on the action! In my opinion there is a real shortfall in gorgeous, curvy, real women, and an overwhelming influx of crash diet, size 0, cheesy wotsit & sharpie eyebrow combo, Jordan in drag lokalikes out there and it’s high time we got rid of this ludicrous idea of what makes women

30

beautiful nowadays. – You never heard Monroe, or Hepburm or Bettie Page asking ‘if their bum looked big in this’, or planking on so many pairs of false eyelashes that they could barely open their eyes – so where has it come from? I’m pretty sure if you gave most men a picture of a curvy 1950’s sex symbol pinup and a 2014 attempt at Holywood Glamour (where girls seem to overshoot the runway by about 5 miles) – they’d go for the classic beauty as opposed to the trashy beauty. I shall continue my mission to change the nations image person by person until we are all celebrating proper curves and real natural beauty, whether you fit into societies little box or not! I think this fabulous shoot really captures the idea that you don’t have to fit in with mainstream fashion to be absolutely stunning.

Lifestyle NIGHTLIFE

GRAFFITI L

iverpool city centre is definitely the number one destination for clubbing in the UK, this month has been extra busy with the Crabbies Grand National 3 day event, which has seen people from all round the county come in to this amazing city. Graffiti lounge and bar pulled out all the stops for the race goers on national weekend with booth packages to suite everyone's pocket and making everyone feel like they were a winner, After such a busy weekend all the clubs got themselves ready for a nice quiet Saturday night this was definitely not the case in Graffiti lounge and bar with all their booths booked out and a cue down the road before 11.30pm this is now "the" place to be seen. When you arrive in Graffiti you are greeted by a very friendly

36

door team who are up for a laugh and happy to point you in the right direction of the hostesses to show you to your booth, Graffiti is grey goose central with bottles flowing everywhere you look and is the ultimate night out if you like somewhere with a brilliant atmosphere, amazing music, and friendly staff. Dj Coco and Dj Lee Hardy were on a rotation on the decks all night playing a mix of R'n'B and Dance music which I personally think is the best mix as it caters for everyone and there's always that one song you need to put your drink down and get up and dance to. One of the managers Adam Ramsey is hands on and was happy to collect glasses, pour drinks and interact with customers, ensuring they were enjoying their Graffiti night out. This enthusiasm has 100%

been passed down to the bar team who were dancing around having fun and genuinely enjoying their night in work, which is always a plus for customers to see, because if they're having a good time then so are you. I would highly recommend any one on a night out in Liverpool to visit Victoria street and pop into the amazing Graffiti lounge and bar as you won't be disappointed and I can guarantee you won't be leaving until your getting kicked out until the wee small hours of the morning . Graffiti is open Every Friday, Saturday and Sunday 9pm till 4am , and I must say am looking forward to another night out there very soon. Photographs by Paul jones from pj photography

Is There Really A Science To Being A

M

y lovely husband a long time ago tried to teach me how to mix on the decks. It was a one-time only experience for me because, not to put it too bluntly, I was absolutely atrocious. And I am classically trained - albeit a long time ago in the flute. I wrongly assumed that it would be easy, at least for me, oh boy was I proved wrong. These days DJ’s have replaced the old rock guitar heroes. No longer are the icons of the silver screen the people that teenagers flock to to tell them how to think and dress. Now is the age of the DJ, for people like Avicii and Calvin Harris with their own private jets whisking them to the skies at a moments notice to transport them all over the world, to perform to thousands of adoring fans. So I ask myself, is there really a science to being a great DJ. In anage where anyone with a computer can make a dance track and then produce it and play it for free on sound-cloud. Is this something that we could

GREAT DJ? all learn and make mega millions like David Guetta? Is it the choice of music that mattersor the beats per minute that makes the difference? A DJs work involves entertaining often large groups of people in one main, specific way – encouraging and facilitating dance. Many research projects over time have scientifically studied the effects of music and dancing, but could it be that great DJs have a tacit understanding of scientific process which they are able to deliver in a natural way? Dancing is believed to be so enjoyable because motor areas of our brains are activated and stimulated by the pleasure response to the music, by the dance moves we make, and also by us observing the dance moves that other people make. Does the choice of music matter? Perhaps not – not when the current number one dance tune is a sample of Doris Day singing Bang Bang. This track in its own right would be quite

unlikely to get into the charts, but put a good beat behind it - enough of a beat of get you moving - then you have a winner. But the science also tells us that music with a beat at heartbeat pace is less likely to stimulate the kinds of recklessness that faster songs may bring about (while driving). It doesn’t take a scientist to know however that playing a faster, up beat and widely recognised song has a good chance of getting people on their feet – or does it? DJs are entertainers, and good DJs are very aware of how to judge the mood and the dynamics of a room full of people, and how to use the known similarities in their behaviour to generate the right response. The DJ either by reputation, demonstration or both is able to a win the trust and attention of a group of people and is temporarily accepted as their god. So perhaps god is a DJ after all, as they are then encouraged by the group to facilitate and help create a shared group experience that is dance. 37

Damon Albarn

Everyday Robots album review BY JOY LEWIS

D

amon Albarn’s career spans an impressive 25-years. He’s made both his bands Blur and Gorillaz, huge hits and number one albums. And far from people getting bored of him or his “sound” he’s always had the “cool” factor. Every time he releases something new there is an excited buzz. Not only because we instinctively know it’s going to be well accomplished, beautifully written with a perfect score. But because we also know that his latest tunes will be our sound for the next couple of months. Everyday Robots, Albarn says he has written in a mood of nostalgia. I got the impressesion that he was selfphilosophising while looking back at his life. Don’t get me wrong. Everyday Robots is not an instant catch, a few listens all the way 38

through is required to really fall in love with this album. But when I think back, all the other albums that I have instantly loved on the first listen, I quickly grew bored of – then even hated after a few weeks. The other, slow burners are the classics in my extensive collection of music and Everyday Robots has just been added to my classic list. The sound throughout the album is raw and unblemished. Musically unrefined but rather than that taking away from the overall enjoyment, it only adds to its appeal and its intelligent sound. Every tune gives that perfect mix of beautiful musical rendering infused with remorse, angst and listless misery. Infact when I close my eyes it feels like I am listening to a live performance, whilst sat in a student bar, and the next performance is live poetry!

My verdict 4/5

Lifestyle CONCERT REVIEW

McBusted

REVIEW BY AMANDA MOSS

I

have been to many, many concerts in my time but the McBusted gig at the Liverpool Echo Arena recently topped the favourite in my personal poll. From the moment the lights went down and the delighted audience screamed with anticipation as Busted James Bourne and Matt Willis did a spoof Back to the Future scene very cleverly. Tom had Martin McFly's hat attached to his belt, legwarmers and the grooviest sparkly trainers I have ever seen sported by a (straight) guy. They delighted parents and children alike as undoubtably this struck a chord with the mums and dads in the audience. The boys literally bounced onto the stage and didn't stop for an hour an a half as they rocked through all their hits. They engaged with the audience as they encouraged everyone to sing along. Giant footballs and tennis balls were thrown into the crowd for Thats What I Go To School For. Their cheeky humour was displayed in the very funny video clips. My personal highlight was when Matt Willis came on stage wearing a wedding dress for Crashed the Wedding. The boys presences on stage was capturing, I loved Dougie's flourescent guitar. They demonstrated raw talent and we felt the warm rapour between the guys as they perfomed the highlights from their back catalogue. There was no encore, which left us wanting more, but the night was wrapped up with Hughie Lewis' Power of Love to sing along to as we left the Arena, again a tribute to Back to the Future. It is also worth mentioning that if anyone is going along to their next performance then do go early to watch their support acts: The Three Dudes and Young Brando. I have no doubt that these guys will be filling stadiums of their own in the future.

Lifestyle CINEMA Liverpool’s Glitterati turned out in force for the showstopping launch of Route 66, the city’s new drive-in cinema

A

once neglected area of Liverpool city centre was bathed in a Hollywood-style glow as a series of lights marked the way to the star-studded launch of the city’s new drive-thru cinema, Route 66. Over 300 guests including a host of celebrities and North West business leaders flocked to Clarence Dock, Waterloo Road, to be the first to see the UK’s biggest outdoor cinema screen. To celebrate the launch of Liverpool’s drivethru cinema, which the owners say is even bigger and better than Manchester’s, more than 300 V.I.P guests were given a sneak preview of the big screen and were treated to canapés and drinks in a specially erected marquee while being entertained by Liverpool girl band, the Beatelles. Marcus Collins and the Lord Mayor Gary Millar did the honours, officially opening the drive-in cinema, before handing over to Radio City’s Simon Ross, who took over to host proceedings. Specially created footage celebrating Liverpool at its very best was shown as a moving poem by Ste Fletcher was read to the assembled guests, followed by Hollyoaks

highlights, courtesy of Lime Pictures, which were a big hit with the Hollyoaks cast members who’d turned out in force to celebrate the arrival of Liverpool’s Route 66. Jude Cisse and Herbert Howe arrived in fabulous American cars and Erin O’Neil and Anton Powers opted for their own 4x4 to enjoy the Hollywood style drive-in Cinema. However, when it came to suppliers and sponsors, the owners of Route 66 were proud to keep things local, sourcing cinema snacks from Liverpool ONE’s Bierkeller, goodie bags from Cricket, cocktails and mocktails from Mansion, Liverpool, lighting courtesy of Liverpool Big Events Group and Jaguars to chauffeur the V.I.P guests courtesy of Hatfields Liverpool. Lifestyle EATING OUT Review by Neil Woods

fter a sunny day in Southport, we decided to treat my family to a meal at the renowned Marine Brasserie restaurant, inside the Ramada Plaza. The Marine Brasserie is a very elegant and spacious restaurant with great views of the Marina, with a relaxed bar area and a very friendly team of staff. I had garlic Mushrooms as a starter which came in a delicious sauce, two of us had the broccoli soup which they said was gorgeous and the kids opted for the garlic and cheese ciabatta. Our mains consisted of Lancashire hotpot with a potato crust and braised and pickled red cabbage. And Sirloin steaks cooked to perfection, and so tender that a steak knife

was not needed. This was accompanied by two sauces – red wine and my absolute favourite Diane sauce. Served with chunky chips, portabella mushrooms, tomatoes and a watercress salad. Delicious. Children are also welcome, their menu is £5.95 for 2 courses or £7.95 for a 3 course meal. They were also provided the colouring pens and paper to keep them entertained. If you are having a day out in Southport, we highly recommend you take a visit to the marina Brasserie, maybe booking ahead is advisable as it is very popular. And deservedly so, not only for the food but for the excellent attentive staff. My family and I will certainly be returning.

Lifestyle FOOD

WORDS WITh

rosemary Rosemary Shrager, television chef, author of six cookery books, and now owner of a prestigious eponymous cookery school and patisserie, tells us about the passions that drive her. “I hate that phrase ‘fine dining’ – you just go that extra step further to make it that bit nicer. It’s actually just ordinary cooking – cooking is cooking.” On her approach to haute cuisine. “It’s all about combination and presentation. It’s not about anything else but it depends on how refined a range you want it. When people say ‘fine dining’ you don’t put much on your plate, you make sauces finer, you make things look pretty. If you say to me ‘are you doing things to a high standard?’ then yes, but I’m also quite homey as well. I’ve got a combination side of being accessible.” On her passion for seasonal vegetables. “Food, to me, is seasonal. I’m very excited about the asparagus coming out, about the new spring things starting – though I love winter, and root vegetables. What I get upset about is that the supermarkets confuse us - with strawberries for sale in winter and things like that - I just can’t understand it. You don’t know when the seasons start and I think it’s terribly confusing.” 46

On her new patisserie. “My patisserie! It’s a destination place which is lovely so people can come, enjoy champagne, scones, galettes. Everything is made fresh in the cookery school, it’s absolutely beautiful. I have a wonderful French patisserie chef, he’s superb. He goes through three almond galettes a day…” On her love of the Mitsubishi. “We’re hoping to make the Mitsubishi birthday cake. We think they deserve it, don’t you?” Rosemary’s quick to tell us why she’s so infatuated with her Outlander Mitsubishi. “Oh my giddy aunt - it is the most comfortable car I have ever driven in. Metaphorically speaking it’s got everything I’ve ever dreamed of. So much so that I phoned them up yesterday and said ‘I love this car!’” Rosemary Shrager is a Brand Ambassador for Mitsubishi Motors in the UK www.mitsubishi-matters.co.uk www.rosemaryshrager.com

Lifestyle COMMUNITY LIFESTYLE CHATS TO THE DEPUTY LORD MAYOR OF LIVERPOOL,

ERICA KEMP WHAT DO YOU LOVE MOST ABOUT YOUR ROLE?

I love meeting people in Liverpool who have contributed so much to our city. Just this week I attended the presentation of British Empire Medals awards to10 people who live in Merseyside. Listening to their stories was very humbling. It is a real pleasure to meet people who work so hard to improve the lives of others. We have so many unsung heroes in the city it really is an amazing and inspiring place to be Deputy Lord Mayor. HOW DO YOU HOPE TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE?

I am very aware that I get just under 12 months to make the most of the exciting opportunity of being the Lord Mayor of Liverpool. I want to be able to raise the profile of the city during the International Festival of Business and make sure that all our visitors are impressed with our wonderful city. I want to be able to meet as many people as possible who work in Liverpool and for Liverpool and all of its communities to thank them for the work they do to make our city one of the most remarkable cities in the world. I also want to be able to raise money and awareness of my chosen charities and get more people involved in working as volunteers. I want to leave a legacy however all will be revealed in June. ANY SIGNS OF SLOWING DOWN?

No! Plenty of signs of speeding up as we get nearer to June 11th which is the day I become 48

Lord Mayor. The invitations are beginning to arrive at the Town Hall so I want to make sure I am able to attend as many events as possible. I am busy planning my inauguration event which is a bit like planning a wedding with a ceremony and a dinner afterwards! I am still busy working with the residents I represent in my role as a city councilor and of course my older daughter had a baby in early January so I like to spend time with him and my granddaughter! FAVOURITE THING ABOUT THE CITY OF LIVERPOOL.

It’s hard to say exactly what my favourite thing is. I love our beautiful iconic buildings; I think the waterfront is the best in the world. I think our parks are some of the best places in Liverpool to spend time relaxing and enjoying time with family and friends. However, if I had to choose just one I think I would choose the street I live in which is 100 yards from Penny Lane! It’s my home and is the place I love to go back to after a busy day’s work. LIVERPOOL FASHION WEEK HAS BEEN REPORTED ALL OVER THE WORLD. HOW IMPORTANT DO YOU SEE THIS EVENT AS PART OF THE CITY?

This event is so important for our city. As I have said the people who live in Liverpool are unique not just in what we say and do but also our “style” is very special. Liverpool Fashion Week is an opportunity to demonstrate this and showcase what we have to offer.

Foster carers to get payment for skills

IN A PUSH TO ATTRACT AND RETAIN MORE FOSTER CARERS IN LIVERPOOL, THE COUNCIL HAVE RECOMMENDED AN INCREASE IN ANNUAL PAY IN RECOGNITION OF THE HIGH DEGREE OF PROFESSIONALISM REQUIRED TO DO THE JOB.

A

report to the council’s Cabinet meeting on Friday 25 April is recommending the changes to increase the recruitment and retention of foster carers, and recognise the high degree of professionalism needed to do the job.

“It will also allow us to better match the abilities of foster carers to the needs of our children.”

Payment for Skills will see the city council’s team of 300 foster carers paid a professional fee of up to £444 per week in recognition of the knowledge and expertise they bring to the care of looked after children. The money is in addition to weekly age-related allowances of up to £203.75 per child.

A steering group of foster carers and social work managers have drawn up and consulted on the new policy.

Director of Children’s Services, Colette O’Brien, said: “Our team of foster carers do an amazing job providing a loving home for some of our most vulnerable children.” “They deserve the very best support that we can offer, and that is why we are making changes to the system to better reflect the skills that they possess.” 50

There are five fee levels linked to skills, knowledge, experience and professional development. Prior experience and relevant training will be taken into account.

People interested in fostering can visit www.fosteringforliverpool.co.uk to find out more, or call the recruitment line on 0151 515 0000. Foster carers need to be aged over 21, but there is no upper age limit. They can be single, married or co-habiting, straight or gay.

mighty girl G

ill Fell is a mighty girl. A mighty girl is smart, confident, courageous, successful in her chosen field and most of all, an inspiration for the empowerment of women. Gill was diagnosed with Breast Cancer in 2005. It took 6 months for the doctors to properly diagnose her but eventually she had the lump removed and radiotherapy plus the medicine Tamoxifen for 5 years. After 5 years Gill had a full hysterectomy due to the thickening of the womb caused by the cancer medicine. During the operation they accidently cut her ureter. Because of this she was plagued with water infections, the worst infection took her to a specialist who found that she had a tumour in her stomach. Which she recovered from, however afterwards, on a routine check-up the consultants saw lesions on the liver. And so she was told the terrible news that this time the cancer was incurable. 52

This is when she decided to adopt the “Happiness programme to try cure herself using her mind, and to stay up beat and happy regardless. After 4 months and 2 horrendous liver biopsies - an Oncologist from Liverpool Hospital told her that the lesions were Benign Adenoma. So Gill has decided to start workshops to pass on her knowledge of the “Happiness programme. Not just to help those with illness but for those people who want to achieve more in life. The workshops are open to all. They are very up-beat and go through many theories on how to be happier on a daily basis. You will leave with the tools on how to achieve your own goals and to be happy along the way.

Lifestyle CELEBRITY INTERVIEW

kian egan

by Joy Lewis

Kian Egan was part of one of the most successful boy bands of all time, Westlife. Now after, 14 no1’s, 12 world tours and a jungle crown, Kian is back in the music business and going solo! And he’s coming to Liverpool perform at the Pop Across the Mersey concert at the Echo Arena on 27th June. HOWS THE ALBUM GOING?

Great I’m so pleased and to be honest, surprised, it’s been really well received and got into the top ten in the first week. The music business is so different now than even when I was in Westlife. Not as much money is spent on promotion and people buy music differently now too. So yea I’m very pleased it’s going so well. IS THIS ALBUM MORE YOU?

It’s a little bit more how I am as an individual. It’s pop rock with a bit of a Brian Adams thrown in. 54

WHAT’S IT LIKE PERFORMING AS A SOLO ARTIST COMPARED TO HAVING THE REST OF WESTLIFE BESIDE YOU?

It’s very different, its scary. The first time I performed solo, I thought what am I doing? I was so scared, so I try not to even think about it. But I have to keep moving forward. My solo career is the next part of life for me. I didn’t go out and look for it, I never expected this opportunity to come my, I never thought I would do this on my own. I’m going to run with it though. I’m saying to myself imagine Westlife didn’t happen that the music business is all new to me. I’m going to take

Lifestyle CELEBRITY INTERVIEW everything as it comes. It’s really exciting, I’m enjoying it enjoy it. WHAT MADE YOU DECIDE TO GO IN FOR THE JUNGLE CHALLENGE.

It was the second time I have been asked. The first time was just after Westlife ended. I didn’t want to do it then as it was too close, I felt I needed time away from all the limelight so I could be at home for a while and live real life. But then they asked again, I didn’t give it a second thought the answer was yes. What a great opportunity to experience the outdoors like that, to take part in the trials and put myself to the test, I couldn’t wait. I love adventure I never sit around I’m always on the go, climbing, surfing doing outdoorsy things, looking for the next challenge. WOULD YOU EVER DO SOMETHING LIKE EWAN MCGREGORS MOTORCYCLE CHALLENGE?

Yes definitely, I’m in constant talks about doing something like that for TV. I’m a natural adventurer I always have been, it’s such a contrast to my other life where I sit at the back of a merc moving 10 miles in 3 hours in London traffic. Don’t get me wrong I love music otherwise I wouldn’t do it – it’s just that I wear 2 hats. POP ACROSS THE MERSEY IS HAPPENING IN JUNE WHAT CAN WE EXPECT FROM THE SHOW?

I’m doing a 40 minute set, of Westlife songs and some of my own songs. I’ve not finalised the play order yet as I keep switching things around making changes. I’m nervous, I have so much to prove to the audience. I wasn’t the lead singer of Westlife so I have to shoe the audience that I can entertain them and keep the party going.

WHAT WILL IT BE LIKE SUPPORTING THE MAIN ACT, THE BACKSTREET BOYS?

Well, there’s a funny thing right there. When Westlife started out over 14 years ago, for our first gig we supported the Backstreet Boys. And now here I am again all these years later, starting out afresh and I am offered the opportunity to support the Back Street Boys, again. So perhaps it is all meant to be. Pop Across The Mersey – featuring Kian Egan, the Backstreet Boys, Blue and 5Angels is on 27th June.

This month Liverpool’s business community welcomes the addition of large, national brand Auction House and we celebrate with Kate Henshaw Hairdressing as the salon wins a prestigious award! AUCTION HOUSE LAUNCHES IN LIVERPOOL

T

he UK’s number one residential auctioneer, Auction House, has held its first auction in Liverpool, marking the launch of a new, local office. The event was held in the Town Hall and available properties spanned the Greater Merseyside area. Ian Hughes, Property Manager for Auction House Liverpool, has worked in the property and finance industry in Merseyside for twenty years. The Liverpool office, under Ian’s leadership, takes the brand’s total to 34 outlets across England, Scotland and Wales. Ian told us a little about the benefits of selling with Auction House: “Auction House has an 80% success rate nationally, with some regional sale rooms achieving 90-100% sale success rates. Sale by auction achieves an exchange of contracts within just four weeks of instruction - about ten weeks quicker than through an estate agent - and with some property types it can lead to a higher price too!” www.auctionhouse.uk.net

KATE HENSHAW HAIRDRESSING WINS NORTH WEST SALON OF THE YEAR 2014

A

igburth based Kate Henshaw Hairdressing has been awarded the title of North West Salon of the Year at the English Hair and Beauty Awards. Kate and the team went along to the sparkling ceremony, at the Mercure Hotel in Manchester on 30th March, where they picked up the accolade, as voted for by clients. This is not the first award win for the popular South Liverpool hairdressers. In 2012 Kate Henshaw Hairdressing was voted Liverpool's Best Salon by readers of Lifestyle Magazine, then in 2013 the business was rated as 5* by the Good Salon Guide. Speaking after the latest win, Kate said: “Finding out that we were nominated for this award was a fantastic surprise. I received a phone call to tell me that our customers had been voting and that the salon was listed as a finalist. To come here and win on the night is the icing on the cake.” www.katehenshawhair.co.uk

TOP DESIGN AWARD FOR DEMENTIA CENTRE A UNIQUE specialist dementia care unit in Liverpool has won a top national design award.

T

he purpose-built £1.2 million councilrun Sedgemoor Dementia Support Centre in Norris Green opened in spring 2013 and was the first of its type in the country. Now it has beaten off competition from bigger and more expensive projects across the rest of the country to pick up the Best Care Complex award at the Healthcare Design Awards. The awards recognise and celebrate the way in which the needs and desires of residents are incorporated into the final design of buildings. Sedgemoor - which was built by construction firm Bullock - has been specially designed for people with dementia and provides assessment and respite facilities, with naturally lit spaces and an open plan layout to provide a calming atmosphere. It features a hi-tech, interactive 4D theatre, where people are able to immerse themselves in the sights, sounds and even smells of the past through old videos, cine footage, photographs and relevant scents, helping with cognitive therapy. 60

Deputy Mayor and Cabinet member for adult social care, Councillor Roz Gladden, said: “When we were designing Sedgemoor, we were very careful to make sure that it would help those who are touched by dementia.” “Anyone who has visited the site knows that it is an absolutely superb facility, offering state-of-the-art support and care for those with dementia and their families.” “We have an ageing population in Liverpool and all of the evidence shows there is going to be an increased need for this type of care facility, so it is particularly pleasing that it has got the seal of approval from health industry design professionals.” Sedgemoor is used by up to 30 people per day and includes a ‘Telecare’ suite where staff are able to fully assess people and identify the most suitable types of technology such as sensors and warning alarms to help them stay safe. Richard Madeley, Care Account Manager at construction firm Bullock, said: “We are delighted to have received such a wellrecognised industry accolade.”

success for mortgagE ‘topup’ scheme NEW LIFE AND NEW HOMES FOR NEW HEYS

THE FORMER site of New Heys School in South Liverpool is being revitalised, with the delivery of 119 high quality, executive homes, aimed at families.

H

ousebuilder Redrow is starting work on the construction of the three, four and five bedroom homes, following the completion of a deal to acquire the land from the city council. The capital receipt the city council receives for the sale of the land will be reinvested in the delivery of new schools, as part of the city’s Schools Building Programme - the £169m scheme which is delivering one of the Mayor’s key pledges, to deliver at least 12 new schools for the city by 2017. Mayor of Liverpool, Joe Anderson visited the site, to see the work getting underway. He said: "Our deal with Redrow is also good news for our young people, because the money we are receiving for the sale of this site will be invested in in the delivery of new schools, as part of our School Building Programme. So, it’s a win-win for the city.”

A £3 MILLION initiative to assist firsttime buyers onto the property ladder is proving to be a big success in Liverpool, with 80 families helped to secure a home in just two years.

L

iverpool City Council has so far invested £2 million pound in the scheme - with £1 million more to come - as part of the Mayor’s pledge to support house buyers and help kick start the housing market in the city. One young couple who have benefited from the scheme is David Kelly, 26 and his partner Jennifer, 25, from Anfield. Living with Jennifer’s mum, and with a baby on the way, they were finding it difficult to find the money they needed for a deposit for their first home. Raising a deposit has become a major hurdle for many first-time buyers, because, in the current climate, most lenders are only prepared to provide a maximum of 75 to 80 per cent of the value of the property, even if the applicant can afford a 95 per cent mortgage. This means that buyers have effectively needed to find a deposit for 25% of the purchase price, which is out of the reach of many. By taking on the role of ‘helper’ through the Lend a Hand scheme, the city council is helping relieve the burden on housebuyers. It means that, for a £100,000 property, buyers only have to pay a deposit of £5,000, rather than £25,000.

CRAIG

PHILLIP’S

DIY... Hello Lifestyle Readers! The spring has finally brought some warmer weather which I’m sure is a relief for everyone! As always, it’s been a busy month for me but that’s just the way I like it. I have recently been busy working on my house in Newport which is coming along nicely. I always seem to have a project or two on the go and have recently purchased another property in Prescot, just outside Liverpool. While many of my projects have been for enjoyment, this latest one will be a real labour of love as I plan to transform it into my dream home! At the moment, it is looking fairly rundown and it will certainly take a great deal of time and commitment to make it exactly as I want it, but I am looking forward to the challenge. I’ve included a picture within the column as well – it may not look like much but wait a few months to see the finished article! In the past month, I have appeared on two TV programmes which you may have managed to catch. I made a guest appearance on ITV2’s hit show Celebrity Juice which was great fun and luckily I didn’t get too much stick from host Keith Lemon! I also appeared on Channel 5’s TV’s Nastiest Villains which counted down some of the characters we have loved to hate over the years. One of them was my former Big Brother housemate ‘Nasty’ Nick Bateman who certainly was one of the show’s biggest characters (aside from myself of course!) and made front page news back in 2000 when the show was first broadcast. Well, that’s about it from me this month my friends. I will keep you updated with all my latest news right here. Until next time.. Until next time… All the best,

THE RIGHT DRILL BITS FOR YOUR DIY JOBS. When you have chosen a drill, it is important that you understand and recognise what drill bits you will need for the DIY tasks at hand. The three most common drill pieces used which will get you around most DIY tasks are; A standard sharp drill piece - usually black in colour sharp to touch the end of, designed for drilling soft materials around the house like wood, skirting boards, doors, frames, window frames, wooden flooring or plastic. A masonry drill piece – this is usually silver in colour and has a blunt end to touch. This is shaped like a small hammer. This is designed for drilling hard materials like bricks, blocks, plasterboard. Materials in which a plug is then required to be applied to the hole after drilling to act as a thread and allow you to drive a screw in. The third and final one are screwdriver bits – these come as flat head ones or cross head Phillips or pozi head ones. All the drill bits come in various sizes in length and diameter. But diameter is most important, the diameter from drill bits for drilling wood or masonry start at about 2mm wide and go up to about 32mm wide. Screwdriver bits again vary in size to suit your needs. One tip to remember; if drilling a hole in a wall that requires a plug, you must match the width size of the plug to the width size of the masonry drill bit to assure a good strong fixing. Alternatively when wanting to drive a screw directly into wood, you will require a pilot hole to allow a screw to core easily into the timber without splitting it. Whichever diameter screw that you choose to use (i.e 6mm screw width) your drill bit for the pilot hole must be thinner, usually 2mm thinner, like a 4mm drill bit to create a pilot hole.

The Future is Here

N

ot that long ago electric cars were spurned as a joke and certainly something that would never really take off – despite the glaring issue of fossil fuels being finite and monstrously expensive. Then the Toyota Prius came on the market, all of a sudden a pretty decent, albeit not very attractive car was unveiled. But perhaps the folk at Toyota assumed that the feel good factor of ownership of a Prius would see it sail off the forecourt, but sadly in Europe it was met with distain, mockery and branded a hippy car – not good for sales.

BMW i3 The all-electric BMW i3.

D

riven by a locally emission-free electric motor, the BMW i3 guarantees mobility wherever you need it. It’s at home anywhere, from the edge of town to the city centre. Aside from the ecological considerations, the BMW i3 makes a strong impression with its breath-taking acceleration at low speeds or from a standstill. And it boasts an impressive realworld range of up to 100 miles thanks to the highvoltage lithium ion battery.

64

But now new hybrid cars have come on the market, and while the feel good factor is still present, in that we are helping to save the earth by driving one, they look really good too. Perhaps we are finally starting to realise that hybrid cars are not something futuristic, but a technology that is very much today. The car rallies of the future will be centred around petrol cars – some of us may even own a petrol car that we take for a spin on a Sunday afternoon and reminisce about the old days, when cars were still noisy and a little bit smelly.

he e-tron range from Audi gives the driver the best of both worlds. It has a combustion engine for long motorway driving and a speedy power up hybrid mode for city driving. The Audi A1 e-tron so far is proving to be the most popular within the range not surprising really given that 148.7 mpg fuel consumption and CO2 emissions of only 45 g/km tell only half its story. With a range of more than 30 miles in city traffic and a peak power of 102PS the A1 e-tron is also fun to drive.

TOYOTA YARIS HYBRID

T

he Toyota Hybrid is the only full hybrid in the supermini category. Toyota revised its full hybrid powertrain so that it could be installed in Yaris without diminishing the system’s quality and performance, or reducing the space in the cabin and boot. The downsized hybrid system combines a substantially re-engineered 1.5-litre petrol engine with a lighter, more compact electric motor, transaxle, inverter and battery pack. It offers a best-in-class balance of performance, fuel economy and CO2 emissions: official combined cycle fuel consumption is 80.7mpg (76.3 for Trend); CO2 output is a segment-best 79g/km (85g/ km for Trend, still well below the UK’s 100g/ km VED threshold); and the ability to operate in all-electric EV mode allows for frequent running with zero NOx, particulate or CO2 tailpipe emissions.

Lifestyle THE LAST WORD WITH AMANDA MOSS

Hello May D

oes anyone else feel that summer is on its way? This is my favourite month of the year because we get light evenings and warm days, with the promise of another 3 months or so to look forward to warmer weather. I have just returned from a glorious break to Israel, I was fortunate to visit the holy land, Jersualem and Tel Aviv, one of the top cities in the world according to Trip Advisor. Everywhere I went I got asked where was I from. I replied "England" and straight away the two most popular responses was "Ah Liverpool football" and "Ah fish and chips." Really! Both made me beam with pride. While our country has a lot going for it, (the weather not being one of those things), I wish we would adopt the mediterranean attitude to children being welcomed in restaurants until late in the evening. We were out every night and there were no signs of binge drinkers throwing up on pavements which kind of makes me sad that it is acceptable back home. The street cafe culture extends well into the evening and it felt very safe walking around. I took the children out of school during term time and ended up being featured on ITV1's Tonight show. I feel very strongly about this, aren't there enough constraints on parents without us being criminalised for wanting to spend time with our families? Travel broadens the mind and my children picked up the language as we travelled around. While academic achievement is important so is the emotional development of my children and spending quality time

66

together was so important- My teenage son giggled, a wonderful sound never heard before (it's usually a grunt). Parents up and down the country are being penalised for this and it is so unfair. Is the economy to grind to a halt in school holiday time? As a small business owner, the people who work alongside me also have children and if we were all to take off at the same time there wouldn't be a magazine the following month. Crazy! Let the sun shine down on all of us,

What we do

Cavitation

Are you disheartened through wasting money on treatments that just don’t work, then look no further and read on…

Cavitation is a natural phenomenon based on low frequency ultrasound. The ultrasound produces a strong wave of pressure to fat cell membranes. A fat cell membrane cannot withstand this pressure and therefore disintegrates into a liquid state. The result is natural, permanent fat loss.

Unlike most fat loss clinics we provide 3 dimensions to your treatment not just one. Through extensive research and spending time nurturing the procedure Sound Physique have become market leaders in the provision of fat loss treatments. We have cracked the code and discovered how to get the best possible results from your treatment in as little time as possible. Using Sound Physique’s own research you will look like a million dollars in no time, no more wasting money on false promises! We provide you with the real results.

Why choose Sound Physique Ultrasound Lipo? • • • • • •

A complete approach to the problem Inch loss Cellulite, skin scars, stretch marks Nutrition program Full, personal support Clinical use only

Stimulation process The stimulation process continues the ultrasound process but works at high frequency as opposed to low.

RF (Vacuum suction) The vacuum suction treatment transfers the liquid fat to the nearest limb and will thus be naturally flushed from the body.

Radio Frequency (Skin Tightening) Radio Frequency utilises three or more pole/ electrodes to deliver the RF energy under the skin. The energy is controlled and limited to the treatment area. Key advantages of this technology are high treatment efficiency, no pain as less energy is required, shorter treatment service and variable depths of penetration.
