EDITOR'S LETTER

A NOTE FROM OUR DEPUTY EDITOR Hello lovely Lifestyle readers and welcome to the November issue of Lifestyle Monthly. Amanda has asked me to step into her ever so fashionable shoes this month, and write the “Editor’s Letter as she was so busy organising and running Lambrini Liverpool Fashion Week. And what a week it was, the biggest and best so far, and as one person pointed out, it got more column inches than any other regional fashion week anywhere else in the country. Well done Amanda, once again, you have done us and the City of Liverpool very proud.

I love November, warm woolly jumpers and big boots are dusted off for long walks through the crispy fallen leaves, while I plan my favourite time of the year – Christmas. This issue has a distinctly festive feel to it, we have all the best pantos in the region. As always we have celebrity interviews galore, from James Cordon to Neil Arthur from Blancmange and Frank Lampard. We also have a four page spread on the highlights from Lambrini Liverpool Fashion week, Christmas present ideas, and a page dedicated to this seasons must have look – tartan. Oh and not forgetting a competition to win a new Playstation 4 – what more could you ask for? So put your feet up, grab a mug of hot chocolate chuck a marshmallow in it and enjoy Liverpool’s no.1 free magazine. Stay stylish,

HISTORIC CHURCH RESTORED Liverpool building which was once the tallest in the city - and which has been derelict for the last 30 years - is about to be restored. The Grade II listed Welsh Presbyterian Church is on Princes Road in Toxteth. The project is being led by the Merseyside Building Preservation Trust – a charity dedicated to the restoration of historic buildings - with the support of the city council. The Trust has acquired the building, which sits within the Princes Park Conservation Area, and has already secured its boundary with new durable fencing. Liverpool City Council’s Cabinet Member for Regeneration, Councillor Malcolm Kennedy, said: “The Welsh Presbyterian Church is an important part of Liverpool’s heritage, so it’s fantastic to see these major steps being taken to bring it back into use.”

MAYOR LAYS OUT SCALE OF FINANCIAL CHALLENGE Government cuts will result in Liverpool City Council only having enough money left to run mandatory services such as social care within two years. The latest estimates show the city council has to save a further £156 million over the next three years, on top of the £173 million that has been cut in the past three years - a total of £329m in six years. This is an increase of £16 million on previous estimates, due to changes in funding arrangements recently announced by the Government. Mayor Joe Anderson said: “Staff across the city council have done an incredible job in the last three years managing the impact of the

STATUS QUO'S

It was supposed to be a phone interview about his film “Bula Quo” and the fact that Status Quo are playing at the Echo Arena December 6th. But no, this was not to happen, I found it difficult to get a word in edgeways. So, instead we had a real good gab, about world poverty, the fear of failure, the meaning of success, exercise, people who shouldn’t have children, wet dog smells, charity, and the origins of scouse. I was on the phone to Francis – yes I now feel I can call him by his first name – for nearly an hour. I can’t tell you everything, it would take too long, so here are the highlights.

Hello Francis Rossi how are you?

“Joy!, I love your accent, it reminds me of growing up. Some of my family are from Liverpool. I had my childhood holidays in Crosby. My mum was a scouser. Liverpool has changed now though, and for the better. But I don’t like some of the new harsher scouse accents” Later on in the conversation we talked about his success “People say – well he’s

done well for himself, he’s made a lot of money – but is that success? I haven’t climbed a mountain, found a cure. I’ve made music, for a very long time, if the music has made people happy then I suppose I can count that as success, but not my pounds in the bank!” I asked about his children “Being a parent is great but opens your eyes to so many things around you. There is so much cruelty in the world, towards children, I can’t understand it. I’m not one of these people who go around saying you have got to have

kids just because I do,and I enjoy having them so much. Cruelty and neglect, does this happen because the wrong people have kids? I don’t know.”

We talked about what keeps him going,

“Living the way I do, I would run out of money if I didn’t work. I also have a deep seated fear of failure, that’s why I haven’t stopped. I fear fading away. I am always looking around me for inspiration. I’m 64 now, I have a trainer come to the house 4 times a week to keep this old machine going. Some days I feel old” I told him he wasn’t old, 64 is nothing. I told him about my inspiration, my father in law, he’s in his early 70’s. He works out 4 times a week, has a resting heartbeat and BMI that most 20 year olds yearn for, “Joy, wait until I tell my trainer,

he’s around this afternoon, your father in law is my new inspiration” He finished by saying ”Next time we put the world to rights let’s have a cuppa to go with it”. 11

resh from his team’s recent success, England Captain Steven Gerrard has signed a steel girder at the prestigious Merchant Taylors’ Schools, Liverpool to mark the investment it has made in a £5m project, currently being delivered by Eric Wright Construction. The ongoing two-phase major redevelopment Merchant Taylors ’Girls’ Junior and Mixed Infant School, which began in July, will deliver a two storey extension, forming new classrooms, specialist teaching rooms and offices to enhance the schools’ facilities for the next generation of pupils. Phase one of the project is currently underway and due to complete in early 2014, whilst phase two, which comprises rebuilding the back of the school, is set to be finalised in early 2015. Marking the start of the construction works and the family of schools’ ongoing efforts to update and modernise its buildings, the girder, signed by Steven and two lucky reception children, has been placed on the main front window which, when complete, will be part of a meeting room where the signatures will be visible through a Perspex screen.

Lifestyle COMMUNITY Over 130 people, including some very excited boys and girls in reception, attended the event including school VIP’s, governors, teachers and the Eric Wright Construction team. Steven Gerrard said: “I was thrilled to be invited to the event to celebrate the investment in new facilities. “Merchant Taylors’ already has a great sense of community but I am sure that the improvements will help to make it an even better place for pupils to learn and develop.” Steven follows in the footsteps of other professional football players in the area that have sent their children to Merchants’ including Alan Hansen and Kenny Dalglish, who are both still involved in supporting the Schools today. Whilst on site, Eric Wright Construction has been involving the pupils in the building process. Project manager, Kevin Burgoyne has completed talks with the reception children on health and safety, whilst the junior pupils watched a demonstration on concrete production and attended a talk on suspension bridges and bridge making. On Friday the children will also been attending a brick signing, leaving their mark on the building for many years to come. Jonathan Rayner, operations director of Eric Wright Construction, said: “We have extensive experience in the education sector and are delighted to be involved in delivering this prestigious development.”

DANCE SCHOOL STEAL CROWN IN THEIR DEBUT AT MERSEYSIDE’S BIGGEST DANCE SHOW An Old Swan dance school was crowned winner of the Liverpool Unites in Dance 2013 competition. Nazene Danielle’s Dance Dynamics wowed the judges with their contemporary number Beneath Your Beautiful at the BT Convention Centre. Children from as young as three up to 21 performed beautifully-choreographed routines across a variety of dance styles including ballet, hip hop, rock ‘n’ roll and contemporary. The runners-up were Cody Urban Dance, who performed I Get Crazy, while Funky Feet secured third place with an energetic number called African Avengeance. The panel of judges included Scouse actress and dancer Jennifer Ellison, West End actor Graham Tudor and Liverpool Theatre School principal Norah Button. Jennifer, 30, said she was blown away by the standard of talent in the contest adding: “I thought it was a brilliant show – it was technically amazing. “It was great to see such a diverse range of dance styles, especially as you see so much street dance. It was nice to see some classical routines in the show too. We saw a high standard from everyone taking part but the winners really stood out for me.”

Lifestyle NEWSANDEVENTS TO THE 21ST CENTURY FIBRE BROADBAND AND BEYOND! FIBRE broadband could be extended to up to 98 per cent of Merseyside businesses and homes within the next three years, following a multi-million pound partnership project between Merseyside Local Authorities and BT. New fibre services are set to transform the way consumers use the internet, from the simple sharing of pictures and video to enjoying the growing boom in entertainment services available online. It will also open up a host of new learning and development opportunities. Further benefits of faster broadband include users being able to use multiple bandwidth-hungry applications at the same time, and send and receive large amounts of data much more quickly and efficiently. This will make things like gaming, watching BBC i-Player or downloading films and music much quicker and without annoying ‘buffering’ or screen freeze. Mayor of Liverpool and Chair of Liverpool City Region Cabinet, Joe Anderson, said: “The internet is a huge part of everyday life and it is vital that we do not get left behind if we are to compete effectively with the rest of the UK. This investment in infrastructure will make a big difference to businesses and households across the City Region. I am delighted we have been able to sign this deal with BT which means they can crack on with installing the latest technology.” 15

BLANCMANGE WITH

NEIL ARTHUR

Lifestyle MUSIC by Joy Lewis

BLANCMANGE ALONG WITH HUMAN LEAGUE, SOFT CELL, DEPECHE MODE, YAZOO AND OMD, MADE EDGY BUT ACCESSIBLE SYNTHPOP WITH CROONY VOCALS THE DE RIGUEUR SOUND OF THE EARLY-TO-MID-80S. BLANCMANGE HAD SEVEN TOP 40 HITS AND TWO TOP 40 ALBUMS AND THEY WERE BONA FIDE, IF UNLIKELY, POP STARS. AFTER A SHORT BREAK OF 26 YEARS, NEIL ARTHUR IS BACK AND TOURING WITH A NEW ALBUM "HAPPY FAMILIES TOO”.

Hi Neil, how are you? I’m great thank you for asking, I’m really enjoying promoting Blancmange again, even after all this time. Your last interview was in 1987, what have you been up to since? I walked off the stage at The Albert Hal in 1987, and carried on walking. I stopped enjoying it, I stopped enjoying the music, fame, everything. It all got too much, so that was it for Blancmange, at least for a little while anyway. But I never left music, I have always been a musician no matter what I have been doing. In the last 26 years, I have being doing film music, radio adverts even music for world cups past, my main work, love and passion has always been music that is where I will always be. I have to ask, where did you get your name “Blancmange” from? We turned up at this party, and there on the table were lots and lots of blancmanges, but I don’t like blancmanges. So I went out and got myself a curry. When I came back to the party, curry in hand, I fell over, spilt it everywhere. I scooped it all up and put it in a pint glass. We then stood there in the middle of the party and said we have two name choices, Pint of Curry or Blancmange.

18

What has made you decide to reform and release Happy Families too? We have been asked many many times. But I didn’t want to go out and just repeat

what we had already done, I wanted to do something new. I wanted to take something from 30 years ago, and revisit it, see if I could make it sound better so that’s what I did. I wanted to do an interpretation of the songs, so I imagined that “Happy Families” had never been recorded. And you are releasing it, digitally remastered on vinyl as well as CD, is this for your original fan base or because vinyl sales are increasing at an exponential rate? Vinyl is making a come-back. Years ago it was so exciting to go down to your local music store and buy a record. Downloading an MP3 just doesn’t have that same buzz. Happy Families Too will be exclusively available in CD and vinyl on our tour. Ten songs have been reprogrammed, “Living on the Ceiling” “Feel Me” and “I Can’t Explain” Are you looking forward to performing in Liverpool? Yes very much so, we are playing at Eric’s over in Liverpool on 13th November, I’m looking forward to it.

Answers to: Lee@radiocity.co.uk A bit of a funny dilemma, before I go, my lad got a detention the other day at school for not doing his homework. I was stumped on a suitable punishment for him. You see, when I was a kid I was sent to my room or grounded, but he would be thrilled to bits with either of those options as he has an Xbox in his room and a PS3 downstairs. How times change eh? P.S - Don’t forget to tune into my radio show on Radio City 96.7 every Fri night 10pm midnight and Sat night 9pm - 1am.

Liverpool Fashion Week is famous for giving a platform for up and coming designers and singers. This year we were proud to have had Sophia Ben-Yousef perform. She sang beautifully, and at just 17 the singer/ songwriter/pianist has a unique, soulful and mature sound. Sophia’s first public performance was in April 2012 and she has been performing regularly since, becoming known for her distinctive, soulful voice, and ardent performances. Sophia has already performed with many established artists, such as KOF, Robert Vincent, JP Cooper, Matthew Perryman Jones, Folk, Flock of Seagulls, Chelcee, supported The Valentine Brothers at the O2 Academy Liverpool and has supported Esco Williams at The Epstein Theatre. Having previously worked with the likes of Nick Raymond (Take That’s original A&R) lead singer Switch formed the band mid-2012 with the intention of assembling an outfit which would give the Liverpool music scene a much needed ‘electronic’ injection. Earlier this year, they filmed their first official music video for single ‘Neon Soldier’ and

CORDEN'S CHANCE

James Corden has proved himself in comic and dramatic roles. Now the larger than life writer, actor and presenter seeks to consolidate his movie star credentials with the tale of an opera singing underdog…

26

Everyone likes a good underdog story. It’s a real staple of British media. We just love being inspired by someone who can stand up against the odds and prove that where there’s a will there’s a way.

play One Man, Two Guvnors, hosting Sky1’s sports panel show A League of Their Own and co-creating another comedy hit, The Wrong Mans. Now he’s confidently moving into movie star territory too.

When Simon Cowell developed his singing competition concept out to a broader talent show format in 2007, Britain’s Got Talent followed shows like Opportunity Knocks and New Faces to bring hope to people with the power to entertain but not the wherewithal to get the gigs.

So what kind of preparation was involved in toning down his usual over-the-top performances to play the quiet, shy Paul Potts? “I think it’s safe to say when someone rings you up and says do you want to play Paul Potts in a film, you don’t need to worry about going to join the gym!” he laughs.

James Corden, who in the new movie One Chance plays the show’s first winner, opera singer Paul Potts, is someone who’s never been afraid to show off his own talents. After making his name as a promising young actor in TV series Fat Friends, he went on to cocreate, write and star in the hugely successful comedy, Gavin & Stacey.

“He’s a lovely guy, very soft and kind-hearted. He’s very amiable. I had to talk with him so I could try to copy his voice. It’s strange playing someone who’s alive and well in the world, but I think my job was made easier with regards to the fact I was just playing his past and only up to the moment of Britain’s Got Talent. We all know him from there and that’s where the film kind of ends.”

From there it’s all seemed so easy, from presenting the BRIT Awards to playing one of the leads in the award-winning comedy

Although Corden has been known to take to the mic every now and then, it’s a

Lifestyle different matter altogether where opera is concerned. “I was very happy that I didn’t need to sing opera,” smiles the 35-year-old Londoner. “I sing in my current film [Can a Song Save Your Life?], but I don’t think that anyone should ever have to hear my version of Nessun dorma! There would be dogs in China thinking ‘what the hell is that noise?’ if I started singing!”

ENTERTAINMENT

and Katy Perry didn’t and it just goes on and on until you realise that all the biggest acts in the world didn’t do these things. I think people are always out to knock them, but hey – what harm can it do?”

One Chance hits cinemas nationwide on October 25.

Potts, born in South Gloucestershire and raised in Bristol, came to the talent show as an amateur singer who had self-funded his dream of playing in operas. He had been bullied at school for his participation in the choir, denting his self-confidence, but nevertheless he continued with the determination to sing. He went into the BGT competition as a manager at Carphone Warehouse and after winning, went on to record the album, One Chance, which topped the charts in nine countries. “The story isn’t about Paul Potts and him winning Britain’s Got Talent,” Corden explains. “The film is about a boy who dreams of being an opera singer and everything that was put in his way and all the adversity he was faced with, but he still succeeds. It’s similar to great sports movies.” And what of Corden’s own career? If it hadn’t taken off as it did, would he have considered the talent show route? “If my career didn’t take off, 100 per cent every day of the week I’d have been first in line, I’d have been there in a heartbeat,” he says. “I think there’s good ones and bad ones where some of them treat people well and some don’t, but I think on the whole you just get your chance to soar and fly. People say it’s saturated and all of the charts are just people off reality TV shows now, and I think I don’t know what charts you’re listening to, but Adele wasn’t and Ed Sheeran didn’t and Mumford and Sons didn’t and Rihanna didn’t

LIFESTYLE JOINS THIS MORNING FOR THEIR 25TH BIRTHDAY

Lifestyle

COMMUNITY

The Morning returns to Liverpool with Merseyside personalities supporting ITV’s Christmas appeal Text Santa. Lifestyle were pleased to join ITV’s This Morning as it celebrated its 25th Anniversary with a star studded show aired live from its original home Liverpool’s Albert Dock last month. Neil from Lifestyle Monthly was personally invited to capture a piece of television history among the many hundreds of people who gathered to welcome back Richard Madeley and Judie Finnigan.

Can YOU take a moment to help change the world around you for the better? Because a moment is all it takes to make a difference. On the 3rd October Lifestyle magazine was invited down to the original set of This Morning at the Albert Dock for their 25th Anniversary show. While on air This Morning launched their new appeal ‘Take a Moment’ as part of the anniversary to inspire viewers to complete a small act of kindness, and give something back to their local community. For the first 50,000 acts of 28

kindness submitted, the government will donate £5 per act to the “Text Santa” appeal. Text Santa, ITV’s annual charity fundraiser, is returning this December to raise money and awareness for 6 UK based charities during the Christmas period – Age UK, Barnardo’s, Beatbullying, British Heart Foundation, Clic Sargent and Help the Hospices. So far the appeal has raised a staggering £10 million for charities since it started in 2011, and last year saw hosts Ant & Dec, Philip Schofield, Holly Willoughby, Christine Bleakley and Paddy McGuiness broadcasting all the festive fun to 6.2 million people. St Mary’s school in Crosby at the official launch at Liverpool’s Pier Head. It’s amazing to think that this year is the 10th Liverpool Santa Dash and since launching back in 2004 the city has seen around 50,000 Dashing Santas take to the streets raising tens of thousands of pounds for charity. The event is open to runners, joggers and walkers and everyone has to take part in the Santa suit provided, even dogs can take part. There is also a special 1K Mini Dash for under 12s which takes place immediately after the main 5K run. All participants receive a special 10th anniversary commemorative medal on completion of the race. This year we want to bring the record back to Liverpool so event organisers are targeting 10,000 runners in a bid to reclaim the world title from Las Vegas and needs YOU to get involved and join the largest festive fun run in the UK held in Liverpool on December 1st. The official event charity for 2013 is Claire House children’s hospice. Beth Tweddle and Craig Phillips took to the streets of Liverpool to prepare for this year’s event with some basic training earlier this year and later were joined by children from

Beth Tweddle Said, “I’m proud to be an ambassador for such a great event. It’s fantastic to encourage people to get involved in something, where people can enjoy a fit and healthy approach to the festive period.” Craig continued, “The Liverpool Santa Dash is a key event in the city calendar each year and Im looking forward to taking part once again. CITY CRACKDOWN ON CYBER BULLIES

30

A CRACKDOWN on cyber bullies is to form the focus of Liverpool’s new anti-bullying strategy for schools. The new document – Challenging Bullying is Everyone’s Business – has been developed by the city council in partnership with schools and will run from 2013-1016. It is being backed by hate crime campaigner Peter Tatchell, and was launched at the Town Hall by Mayor Joe Anderson at the beginning of October. Peter Tatchell said: “The bullying that takes place in many school classrooms and playgrounds would be a serious criminal offence if it was happening outside the school environment. “If unchallenged, bigoted, ill-informed attitudes fester; often being the gateway to bullying and other hate crimes. We have a responsibility to protect young people against discrimination, harassment, threats and violence.” The launch follows the success of the previous strategy which was launched in 2006. There has been a 12 percent drop in the number of pupils reporting bullying in the city’s annual survey. The fall – from 30 percent to 18 percent – represents almost 9,500 fewer children being victimised in 2012 compared to 2006.

NEWS

However, more pupils have been reporting cyber bullying – with 11 percent being abused online in 2012 (up two percent on 2011) and 12 percent being bullied via mobile phone (up three percent). In order to tackle this, schools will be able to bid for grants for projects which highlight the issue of cyber bullying. Councillor Jane Corbett, Cabinet member for education, said: “We know that bullying can lead to children missing school, failing exams, dropping out of sport, staying away from extra-curricular activities and limiting their life choices. “Young people are communicating in so many different ways now that bullying is no longer just taking place on the school yard, but is also happening at home anonymously through computers or on mobile phones. “It is absolutely vital we provide the right level of support and assistance to our young people who suffer bullying, so they know where to turn for help.” At the launch, pupils from Hope School in Woolton talked about their work with the Anti-Bullying Ambassadors programme, run by the charity 'The Diana Award' set up in memory of Diana, Princess of Wales. Thomas Minge (Andrew Schofield) owns a small, dilapidated warehouse in Liverpool. He despises everything - happiness, laughter, modern music, spending money - but most of all he hates Christmas. Meanwhile, his four drunken, dysfunctional employees can’t wait to start the festive season! When they find out they’re about to be sacked by their miserable employer they set out to discover a way to

ensure their survival. They soon uncover a few 1970’s skeletons in Thomas’s dirty closet, including old platform shoes, a load of Viagra and the mysterious Hairy Mary! The arrival of a weird deranged tramp ensures some crazy festive hilarity! What is Thomas Minge’s secret? What is he hiding? Why does he hate Christmas so much? Why does he regularly swill carol singers? Will the workers escape the sack? Perhaps the legendary Walrus of Love himself, Barry White, holds the key. Dave Kirby said: “I’ve had great fun writing this show and I hope the audience will have just as much of a laugh watching it! Make this show your first, your last and your everything this Christmas!” So don’t be an old Scrooge, get yourself down to the Echo Arena this Christmas for a Barry good time. PETER PAN FLIES INTO THE EMPIRE THIS CHRISTMAS

Lifestyle had the pleasure of joining the cast at Circo in the Albert Dock for the launch of this year’s Christmas Panto at the Empire Liverpool – Peter Pan. There is a veritable line up of Liverpool favourites headlining the show. Ray Quinn (X Factor, Grease, Dancing on Ice) takes centre stage as the boy who never grew up Peter Pan (X factor, Grease, Dancing on Ice) alongside Brookside’s Louis Emerick as the bad guy Captain Hook, Juice FM’s Leanne Campbell as Tiger Lily, Shaun Mason (Cinderella’s Buttons) as loveable Smee, Emma Stephens, (Ray Quinn’s wife) as Wendy and Radio City’s Pete Price as Roger the camp Pirate. Louis Emerick, “I play Hook. He’s the ultimate baddy – the bad guy is the ultimate part. If I can get at least one child crying by the end of the night I feel I have done my job! The cast is great and the set, I heard is spectacular, they have spent an awful lot of money on the set, it’s the biggest and the most expensive so far.” Pete Price, “This is my 20th Panto. My first Panto was at the Empire too. I missed out, gutted that I started late, but since my first panto I’ve done one every year. This one is going to be great, I play Roger the camp pirate. The script is fantastic, very funny with lots of I managed to have quick chats with the cast, great one liners in it.” here’s what they had to say; Ray Quinn, “I am really excited about doing Peter Pan runs at the Empire Peter Pan this year at the Empire. As you know 13th December – 5th January I am from Liverpool, the Empire for me is the ultimate stage, it’s my favourite theatre, it’s the golden ticket. I can’t wait to start rehersals, I have my wife with me, I love working with her. We have worked together for 3 pantos now, we are a great team. I’ve read the script, I love it, practically the whole cast is from Liverpool we are all getting on already and have a great banter. I love Liverpool people I am proud to be a Scouser. I can’t wait to start rehearsals, I’m such a kid I get to fly down across the stage, and run around with pirates. For me it’s not Christmas without panto and this year is going to the best yet.” 36

Hello Lifestyle Readers! Autumn has well and truly arrived bringing beautiful colours, but also some decidedly grim weather! As someone who regularly works outside, the change in weather is always very noticeable to me and certainly affects the way I work. Wrapping up warm outdoors is always essential and there is no better place to start than with a pair of Heat Holders. I have been working hard on some housing projects this month, and while in the past this meant my feet ending up icy cold, this never happens since I discovered Heat Holders. The innovative sock brand keep your feet seven times warmer than normal cotton socks. As far as have ever been tested, Heat Holders are the warmest thermal socks in the world. With a tog rating of 2.34, Heat Holders provide a practical and economical alternative to layering socks.

Building and other trades have a lot of tough jobs that require tough workwear. When I first started, I didnโ t have a lot of spare cash so I always went for the cheapest workwear on the market. It didnโ t take me long to realise that this is a false economy. Buying cheaper brands of workwear, you will end up replacing them frequently, which means you will spend more money in the long run. Much better to find a brand you trust and can rely on to do the job. Personally, I always trust in Blรฅklรคder, a Swedish manufacturer, and Iโ ve never been let down. They rigorously test all their workwear so you can be sure it will endure whatever tests you put it through.

FRANK LAMPARD Chelsea’s golden boy Frank Lampard looks to life after football with the release of his third children’s book. Where professional sportsmen are used to fielding criticism that they’re just one-trick ponies, every now and again someone comes along to score a beauty out of nowhere. That could be a fitting description for Chelsea and England star Frank Lampard – after all, the 35-yearold has now successfully entered a new sphere... in writing children’s stories. In his five-book series of Frankie’s Magic Football – the third of which, Frankie vs The Cowboy’s Crew, has just been published – readers are whisked away on adventures with the titular schoolboy hero, his friends, and pet dog Max, taking part in a real-life Fantasy Football League against the most unlikely teams from extraordinary times and places.

46

“I came up with the idea while reading and watching TV with the kids,” the 35-year-old smiles. “I thought there wasn’t really anything out there that was football-based, educational and fun. I was 29 or 30 then, and I had a lot going on in my football career, but as you get older you get more time and you start to think about different things. You think about life after football, so it was a great sideline for me at that point.” And so Lampard, already a role model to millions of children worldwide, is now encouraging them to fulfil their literary, as well as sporting ambitions too. “I wanted

to make it about football, but I wanted to make it educational as well, so there’s a moral lesson in there for the kids, and the way they are travelling backwards and forwards there is a historical lesson in there too,” he enthuses. “I think there is an element as a footballer where you can use a bit of your influence and use it in a positive way, and this is something I have put a lot of time into doing, and I think for the right reasons” In addition to having the first Frankie’s Magic Football story, Frankie Vs The Pirate Pillages, selected for the summer reading challenge 2013, Frank personally supported the challenge over the summer as a champion of literacy for the Reading Agency. This role was very much linked to his original aims in writing a children’s series; to inspire both boys and girls with exciting stories, and to promote the importance of reading for young people. The series has received a fantastic response from reviewers and readers alike since its launch in June 2013, and will continue in early 2014 with a fourth and fifth title – Frankie vs The Mummy’s Menace and Frankie vs The Knight’s Nasties Lampard, who is engaged to Christine

Lifestyle CULTURE Bleakley, has two daughters from a previous relationship. He makes a point of reading with his kids regularly. “I think I am a pretty relaxed parent, but it is one thing where I do try to get them to read, as I find it’s a great way of focusing their minds. Anyone who reads can take a lot of knowledge and satisfaction from it.” Keeping them grounded is another challenge. “Yes, you live and learn as you go along when you’re a parent. I try to just keep their feet on the ground. I never spoil them, and it is very important that they learn the basics of money, of respect, of manners. I’d hate for somebody to look at them and say ‘they are spoilt little brats’. That’s my biggest nightmare!” As a family man, Lampard is happiest when he’s surrounded by his loved ones. “When we won the Champions League in Munich, my family and Christine’s family had two days in Munich before the final. That Munich trip was the most amazing two days of my sporting life – it was really special for me. We had a big party in the hotel after the match and all my family and friends came there. We stayed up all night and when you look back, it was the complete moment. When I look back on my career, that will always be a special moment. It was incredible.” Footballers often rely on that support around them, and Lampard is no different. “At any level in England there are pressures, and if you have a bit of a bad game, you will get criticised,” he nods. “That comes with the territory. And that is when you need to go home and have people there for you. My family and Christine have always been there for me.”

Still, with a career that’s seen more highs than lows, Lampard knows how lucky he’s been. “Looking back, I feel pretty fortunate,” he smiles. With England I had some tough times; with Chelsea it’s all been pretty good. There haven’t been too many bad times. There were times when England fans were getting on my back and I didn’t like it, but if you do stick with and try to turn it round, those people will go with you again. If you throw the towel in, no one wins. And I’ve learned that along the way.”

Frankie’s Magic Football:Frankie vs The Cowboy’s Crew by Frank Lampard is published by Little, Brown books for Young Readers,

WAGAMAMA AUTUMN/WINTER REVIEW

We were lucky enough to be invited to sample a few dishes off the new forthcoming Autumn/Winter menu at Wagamama’s, which is due to launch on the 22nd of October 2013. This is a Japanese inspired restaurant (Geishas eat free:), which is a firm favorite with families and students, due to its relaxed and social atmosphere and decent prices. The bench style seating was perfect for us girls as we will chat up anyone, but it may not be to everyones taste. We normally only venture here after a hard days shopping to take the weight off our stilettos and stock up on some carbs to fuel up for yet more shopping, so some new seasonal dishes would be an incentive to give a Friday night a whirl. Excitedly, we awaited the first dish Gyoza parcels, which didn’t disappoint, these cheeky little parcels with plump juicy pulled pork, served with a black vinegar and ginger dipping sauce, which was very sweet with a tasty tang. Perfect for sharing, unless you are greedy like our Sarah (cat fight over the last one). Soon to follow was our fave dish of the night, Mahi Mahi curry, which was grilled white fish (similar to swordfish) on a bed of sweet potato and peppers served in a creamy spicy sauce. It was so delicious and everyone was nearly licking the bowl (uncouth). There was just the right amount of spice not to overwhelm the dish. Our next offering was a new and 50

Lifestyle RESTAURANT improved version of the old favorite. Ramen noodles in a milky coconut and lemongrass soup piled high with spicy prawns or grilled chicken, bean sprouts, coriander and lime. As usual this was very filling and full of flavour. This dish was really messy to eat, resulting in make up all over the place and a sticky curly blow, but it was so worth it! We left room for dessert, which is always a pleasure never a chore, and we were rewarded with half moon pancakes filled with a yummy date and orange paste accompanied by a creamy cinnamon ice cream. Both were nicely spiced and very christmassy. We washed everything down with a new healthy carrot and beetroot smoothie, and not so healthy Iki Beer. Chef Surenda did a fantastic job and he is really passionate about his food and the team looked after us superbly. This was perfect winter food with a tasty seasonal spin on some old favorites.

Lifestyle

RECIPE

Method: t Grease and line a 23cm tin. Preheat oven to 140C/120C fan/gas 4. t Beat the margarine until soft. Add the sugar and cream the two together until pale and fluffy. t Add the eggs bit by bit, whisking and adding a little flour as you go to hold the mixture together. Do not overbeat whilst adding the eggs. t Once all the egg has been added, add the rest of the flour and give the batter a good beating. t Sprinkle the spices, dried fruit, ground almonds, lemon juice, and lemon and orange rind on top of the mixture and fold in until evenly distributed. Add a pinch of salt. t Then pour the mix into the lined tin. t Place on the middle shelf of the oven and cook for aprox 2 hours. Test the cake after 1.5 hours by inserting a skewer or sharp knife into the cake - if it comes out clean, it’s ready. Leave to cool in the tin. t Put the cooled cake into an air tight tin - if you like your cake a little boozy then every day feed it with brandy, whisky or rum. t By the time you are ready to put the marzipan and icing on it the fruit cake will be heavy and moist - delicious!

Well the city of Liverpool did itself proud when Lambrini Liverpool Fashion Week opened its doors at the iconic Liver Buildings last month. And what a show it was, working behind the scenes as Creative Director for make-up you do not get to see the catwalk front of house, it’s all go with designers collections and dress changes, models been hiked out of one dress the helped into another in a quick turnaround whilst the hair and make-up teams, reset make up, powder faces, spray hair change hair styles and of course top up on the old lip gloss. There were so so many beautiful, different and unique collections, but isn’t that what makes a fashion week, the diversity? The hair and make-up teams worked seamlessly together to ensure each designers creation was complimented with stunning make up and very creative hair together with jewellery collections, it all made for a fabulous week. And no there was no high drama, no hissy 52

fits, no scratching out of models eyes and the spitting out of dummies, just a fabulous but hectic behind the scenes execution of planned looks with each make-up and hair creation carefully planned out before hand as well as a cheeky Peach Lambrini (or two) with both the hair and make-up team to celebrate our hard earned work. The event had major coverage from national papers to Channel Four making this year its most biggest and prestigious, and I look forward to what is in store for next year! So as we close the doors to Lambrini Liverpool Fashion Week for another year I would like to convey a huge thank you to everyone involved in both the hair and make-up teams you were all awesome and did a fabulous job, and I for one can say I was proud to be a part of it. See you in December, stay beautiful Anne x

HEALTH

SPORTS MASSEUSE TO THE STARS Meet Brian Roberts, when he was 48, he decided to change his life, he went from Civil Engineer to Sport Masseur and Complementary Therapist, he has proved that it's never too late to follow your dreams. His new business has given him the opportunity to work with local celebrities, professional boxers and the charity Healing Hands! by Joy Lewis HI BRIAN, WHAT TREATMENTS DO YOU OFFER?

Sports Massage, Swedish Massage, Aromatherapy, Indian Head Massage, Reflexology, Seated Thai Massage, Thermal Auricular Massage (Ear Candling), Hot Stones Massage, and Reiki. WHY

ARE

THEY

BENEFICIAL?

All the treatments are beneficial in helping people deal with stress, anxiety and muscular tension. Swedish and Indian Head Massages are gentle, relaxing massages that help promote a sense of calm and wellbeing. Seated Thai Massage is done over clothing and is good for balancing the body. A Hot Stone Massage provides a very relaxing, deep massage that intensifies the beneficial effects of the massage. Reflexology can be done on either the hands or feet and is very relaxing and balancing. Reiki is a hands off treatment that works with the energy in the body. Sports Massage is a deep massage that is beneficial for injuries and for pre and post sporting activities. I HEAR YOU WORK WITH BOXERS?

I have been working closely with the professional boxers at Birkenhead Venture Boxing and provided treatments in preparation for their fights, including on the undercard at the David Price title fights at the Echo Arena. I also provided treatments to 54

Anthony Fowler who is currently representing Team GB at the Boxing World Championships in Kazakhstan. AND YOU WORK WITH VICTIMS OF WAR?

Yes it’s the Healing Hands Network charity, providing treatments to the victims of war and to armed forces veterans and their partners. Last year I spent two weeks in Bosnia treating victims of the Bosnian war who were either affected by the siege of Sarajevo or tortured or raped in the concentration camps. It was a very humbling and enriching experience. I am also the team leader for the charity's partnership with Everton in the Community and Combat Stress, providing treatments to ex service men and women who are suffering the effects of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. WHAT DID YOU DO FOR LAMBRINI LIVERPOOL FASHION WEEK?

I provided treatments in the VIP lounge and had an amazing week. The atmosphere was incredible and I met so many inspirational people. Lambrini Liverpool Fashion week has already opened so many doors for me, having since been approached by a major promoter to provide treatments at the Grand National next year! WRAP UP CHRISTMAS AT

for the little ones that they won’t be able to wait to put on. Baby Melanie’s walls are lined with hundreds of beautiful designer getups and the selection in Frocks will leave you spoilt for choice. The fashion options for grown-ups are just as exciting too. Look out for the Abbey by Abbey Clancy range in Matalan, which opened last month – there are some fabulous party pieces, particularly for fans of the LBD. New Look, Koko and Twist are just are just a few of the other fashion stores to put on your hit list, and men should head to Storm Designer.

You’ve got used to seeing the twinkly displays over the last month and you’ve heard whispers about those jaw-droppingly organised friends who have it all wrapped up, but now is the time for you to start taking it seriously. Christmas is coming, and you need to start shopping. We’re here to let you in on a secret: it doesn’t have to be difficult. Get tactical, make lists: you’ve got to dress the house, dress the kids, dress yourself, stock the cupboards, and last but not least, choose and wrap those presents. You can tick all of these things off your list at St Johns, and what’s even better is that it won’t break the bank. Wilkos has an incredible selection of Christmas decorations, whether your festive style is a kaleidoscope of colours or tasteful muted tones. You can pick up a six foot tree for as little as £20, or a four foot one for £10.

56

The childrenswear boutiques within St Johns will be stocking up on extra special outfits

Forget fretting about food, stock up in advance as much as you can. Don’t forget, you can get Cadburys and other chocolate for a snip of its usual price at Poundland and Home Bargains – great for filling stockings and dishing out to guests. If you haven’t visited Aldi’s wine and fizz section, now is the time to give it a whirl. You won’t look back. And now the best bit: presents. St Johns is home to Argos, and as any parent who’s kids have access to the catalogue knows, that place has hundreds of toys that kids are dying to get their hands on. Wilkos also has a huge toy department for you to get stuck into. For grown up presents, the Perfume Shop and The Fragrance Shop are sure fire hits, as are Warren James and Rockc Jewellers. Bag your finishing touches, like wrapping paper and sellotape, in Clinton Cards and you’re all done! Easy, wasn’t it? With the newly refurbished food court and entrances, you won’t recognise St Johns this year. Make sure you soak up the changes by taking time out to have lunch or a snack in the food court. You can even park at St Johns, and you won’t have to venture outside into the rain once. We love it when a plan comes together.

!"##$#%&'"#%(&"$)(*&+,-(-.&"!&)(#/0 It’s a sad fact that men are 70% more likely to be affected from skin cancer in the UK than woman. Men have traditionally worked topless outside in a bid to get that perfect bronze toned body. With this in mind Nouvatan, a company that currently produces fully organic natural looking spray tanning products, have created a self tanning retail range aimed solely at men that will be available for anyone to buy online or on the high street. The Nouvaman tanning range is the first in a line of products to add to the Nouvatan brand with additional grooming products to be launched over the coming months. www.nouvaman.com
