Todos los días del año, miles de personas y vehículos circulan por el Puente de la Amistad, que se extiende sobre el río Paraná, uniendo las urbes de Ciudad del Este y Foz de Iguazú. Desde su inauguración en 1965, la obra ha propiciado el flujo comercial terrestre entre Paraguay y Brasil. De hecho, la joven ciudad de Puerto Stroessner, hoy Ciudad del Este, pasó a ser el segundo mayor centro urbano del Paraguay y considerada zona franca de libre comercio. El puente mide 552 metros de largo y 78 de alto, lo que permite que desde sus descansos los viandantes puedan disfrutar del maravilloso paisaje del gran río Paraná.
Every day of the year, thousands of people and cars travel along the Bridge of Friendship that crosses the Paraná River, which unites Ciudad de Este and Foz de Iguazu. Since its inauguration in 1965, this bridge has permitted commercial traffic between Paraguay and Brazil. In fact, the young city of Puerto Stroessner, which today is called Ciudad de Este, grew into the second largest urban area in Paraguay and is a free trade zone. The bridge measures 552 meters in length and 78 meters in height, which means that from the resting places pedestrians can enjoy a marvelous view of the great Paraná River.

La mayoría de los siguientes consejos de seguridad para viajar quizás te parezcan obvios, pero no está de más recordarlos: - Mira siempre a tu alrededor. Muchas personas amigas de lo ajeno aprovechan los momentos de perplejidad turística para hacer de las suyas. - Déjalo ir. Nada es tan valioso como tu vida, así que si alguien te pide tu dinero, cartera, celular, etc., dáselo y no opongas resistencia. - Separa tu dinero. Nunca salgas del hotel con todo el efectivo que llevaste o con todas tus tarjetas de crédito. Si cualquier eventualidad sucede, podrás continuar viajando... y disfrutando. - Cierra tu bolso o mochila todo el tiempo. La mayoría de las cosas perdidas de los viajeros se debe a que no tienen el cuidado de volver a cerrar sus bolsos, y esto no significa que se los hayan robado; tus cosas se pueden caer sin darte cuenta. - Infórmate sobre las estafas más frecuentes del lugar adonde vas. No hay país, por más desarrollado que sea, que no las tenga. Permanece alerta y no confíes en las personas tan amables. - Ten un seguro de viajero. Los accidentes y enfermedades suceden en cualquier momento y lugar; no hay nada peor que tener que interrumpir tu viaje porque tuviste que pagar una cuenta de hospital y ya no tienes dinero para continuar. - En el hotel, mantén tu puerta asegurada todo el tiempo. El consejo no es necesariamente por asaltos: en más de una ocasión un borracho confundido ha entrado a una habitación. The majority of the following pieces of safety advice to use while travelling may seem obvious, but it won’t hurt to review them: - Always be aware of your surroundings. Many thieves take advantage of tourists’ moments of bewilderment to rob them. - Let it go. Nothing is as valuable as your life, and thus if someone asks for your money, purse, cellphone etc., give it up and don’t resist. - Separate your money. Never leave the hotel with all your cash or with all your credit cards. If something were to happen, you would be able to continue travelling… and enjoying. - Keep your bag or backpack closed at all times. The majority of things lost by travellers are caused by carelessness when closing bags. And that 10
doesn’t mean that you will be robbed, it means things can fall out without your noticing. - Learn about the most common forms of swindling that occur in the place you are visiting. There is no country, no matter how developed, that doesn’t have any such fraud. Be alert and don’t trust people who are overly friendly. - Get travel insurance. Accidents and illness can happen anytime, anywhere, and there is nothing worse than having to end a trip because you had to pay a hospital bill and have run out of money. - In the hotel, keep the door locked at all times. This advice is not necessarily to protect from robbery: on more than one occasion a confused drunk has entered a room.

¡Vamos a Chile! El 16 de julio es feriado nacional en ese país, en conmemoración a Nuestra Señora del Carmen. Feligreses de diversas latitudes viajan a la región de Tarapacá y más precisamente a La Tirana, población situada a 72 km de Iquique, a pedirle favores a la santa y rendirle honores en su fiesta. La tradición data de finales del siglo XIX. Cada año, los preparativos empiezan en marzo con la confección de vistosos trajes y los ensayos de las coreografías de las asociaciones de fieles o hermandades, que se afanan por tener la mejor presentación tanto en la víspera de la festividad como en el mismo día del “cumpleaños” de “la Chinita”, como es llamada la Virgen. 16

Let’s go to Chile! July 16 is a national holiday in this country, and it is when Our Lady of Carmen is commemorated. Parishioners from diverse latitudes travel to the Tarapaca region and more specifically to Tirana, a town located 72 km from Iquique, to ask for favors from the Saint and to pay honor to her. This tradition dates back to the end of the 19th Century. Actualmente, participan de ella hermandades chilenas, bolivianas y peruanas, además de miles de feligreses y turistas. La diablada es la danza más vistosa de la celebración y está inspirada en la que se baila en Bolivia para la festividad de la Candelaria o en Carnaval. Los “cornudos” inundan las calles con serpientes asomando por sus cabezas. Sin embargo, hay otros ritmos que nunca faltan: antawaras, chunchos, chinos, indios y kayahuallas. Es la fe de todos demostrada con alegría. 18

Friends, acquaintances… How many do you want?
Cantando, el cantante brasileño Roberto Carlos dice que quisiera tener un millón de amigos. ¿No serán demasiados? ¿Cuántos realmente son necesarios? En el mes universal de la amistad, quisimos saber del tema y por eso recurrimos a un estudio realizado en Estados Unidos con 10.000 estudiantes. Se concluyó que los que ganaban más dinero de adultos eran aquellos que tenían más amigos en la escuela. Cada amigo extra en el colegio añadió un 2 % a su sueldo. Con ese dato, bien vale la pena tener muchos, ¿cierto? Según investigaciones antropológicas, las personas tienen una media de 150 amigos. Pero, ¡atención!, ese grupo está formado por un núcleo central de unos cinco individuos: amigos propiamente dicho, y otro adicional de 10; el resto es lo que se conoce como “conocidos”. En el libro La filosofía de la amistad, Mark Vernon dice que la idea de que se puede tener un número ilimitado de amigos desvirtúa el concepto de amistad y que es mejor preguntarse sobre la calidad de amistades que se tienen y no sobre la cantidad. “Creo que la amistad es una de esas cosas en las que menos es más”. 20

In the month of friendship, we want to know more about this topic and thus we looked into a study done in the USA with 10,000 students. It was determined that the people who earn more money as adults, were those who had more friends in school. Each additional friend in school added 2% to your salary. With that information, it then does make sense to have many friends, right? According to anthropological studies, people have an average of 150 friends. But, and pay attention here, that group is formed by a nucleus of around five individuals: friends called as such and another 10; the rest are more aptly called “acquaintances.” In the book, Philosophy of Friendship, Mark Vernon says that the idea that a person can have an unlimited number of friends distorts the concept of friendship and it is best to ask about the quality of the friendships that one has and not about the quantity. “I think that friendship is one of those things where less is more.”

Lo cierto es que con sus obras algunos pintores callejeros decoran varias esquinas de Santa Cruz de la Sierra, que se han convertido en una suerte de galerías de exposición permanente al aire libre. Estos lienzos al óleo, que muestran paisajes naturales, costumbristas, naturaleza muerta e incluso algunas propuestas abstractas, ya son parte del paisaje urbano de la ciudad boliviana. La idea de sus autores es llegar a un público que busca un objeto decorativo y no precisamente una obra de arte. “Nosotros le damos la opción a cualquier persona de tener un complemento decorativo en su casa”, explica Lucio Masías, un artesano de la pintura que tiene un catálogo con más de 3.000 sugerencias. Varias ciudades del mundo cuentan con estos “artistas callejeros”, como muchos los suelen lla-

The idea of the creators is to reach the public who is searching for a decoration, but not necessarily a work of art. “We give everyone the option of having a decorative item in the house,” explains Lucio Masias, a painter whose catalogue has more than 3,000 items. Es una camiseta común y corriente, pero gracias a sus íconos estampados permite que te hagas entender, al menos en lo más básico, donde no hablen tu idioma. Obviamente es “digital”, porque para buscar un lugar o servicio tienes que señalar el símbolo con el dedo a tu interlocutor. La idea nació de un grupo de jóvenes suizos que crearon la compañía Iconspeak tras un viaje a Vietnam, donde se les arruinó una motocicleta y nadie comprendía que buscaban un mecánico. Allí se dieron cuenta de que no siempre preguntando se llega a Roma, sino también con íconos. 24

On the blog / EN LA BITÁCORA A una hora y 15 minutos de Montevideo, camino a Punta del Este, se yergue este museo-taller-hotel-taberna. Es una “escultura habitable”.
An hour and fifteen minutes from Montevideo, on the way to Punta del Este, a museum-workshop-hotel-tavern rises up. It is a “habitable sculpture.” Es inevitable no evocar la isla griega de Santorini o la costa tunecina cuando se está en Casapueblo, un museo-taller-hotel-taberna situado a 15 minutos de Punta del Este y a poco más de una hora de Montevideo. Su creador, el artista plástico Carlos Páez Vilaró, insistió varias veces que su construcción no tenía nada que ver con las edificaciones del Mediterráneo y menos aun con las heredadas al mundo por Gaudí. Según él, el sitio era una representación del típico hombre de campo uruguayo que vive en casas como nidos de hornero, un ave propio de Sudamérica. Casapueblo es un conjunto de construcciones que parecen precipitarse al mar. No tiene líneas rectas, son curvas y más curvas, y para ello Páez Vilaró no utilizó planos y todo fue surgiendo de su imaginación extraordinaria a medida que la edificación avanzaba. El laberinto blanco consta de 13 pisos con terrazas que brindan espectaculares atardeceres.
It is impossible not to recall the Greek Island of Santorini or the Tunisian coast when you are in Casapuelbo a museum-workshop-hotel-tavern located 15 minutes from Punta de Este and a bit more than an hour from Montevideo. Its creator, the artist Carlos Páez Vilaró, said many times that his construction has nothing to do with buildings of the Mediterranean and even less with the world of Gaudí. According to him, the place was a typical representation of a man from the countryside of Uruguay who lives in houses that look like nests of the hornero bird, a bird of South America. Casapueblo is a bunch of constructions that seem to plunge into the ocean. There are not straight lines, but instead are curves and more curves, and for this construction Páez Vilaró didn’t use blueprints, but instead it all came from his extraordinary imagination and evolved as the buildings were created. La construcción de Casapueblo comenzó en 1958 y durante 36 años se fue completando lo que después el artista denominaría su “escultura habitable”. Anualmente, el museo-taller es visitado por más de 60 mil turistas de todo el mundo. Está sembrado de collages de gatos (su inspiración divina), cerámicas multicolores, un serial de signos del zodíaco y rincones bohemios en honor a Mario Benedetti, Picasso, Juan Carlos Onetti, Ernesto Sábato, Nicolás Guillén o Jorge Luis Borges. Desde 1994, en las terrazas del museo se realiza la Ceremonia del Sol. Minutos antes del atardecer, a través de una grabación, Carlos Páez Vilaró despide al astro rey. “Mañana te espero otra vez”, le dice. Reading out loud brings great benefits for he who is reading as well as for he who listens. In particular, telling stories to children makes them more thoughtful in relation to what their parents and other adults are explaining to them regarding a given situation or behavior. But there are other benefits as well… 1. Stories are one of the bases to the intellectual development of a child: listening to stories allows children to understand different topics quickly. 2. Listening to stories awakens the imagination and curiosity, and develops critical thinking capacity. 3. Stories will help children to overcome their own fears. 4. Stories transmit calmness to them. In fact, it is very common to read stories out loud to children to help them sleep. 5. The fact that children and adults spend this time reading together, makes children feel more cared for, because someone is giving them time.

The large home of this legend of La Paz, located on the colonial and well-conserved Jaen Street, still has the charm it certainly had during revolutionary times. Entre sus distintos ambientes está la Sala de los Protomártires de la Independencia, un homenaje a todos los que urdieron liberarse de la Corona Española. Allí se pueden admirar valiosos cuadros, como un retrato de Murillo logrado por Elisa Rocha de Ballivián en 1915 o La glorificación de Murillo, obra del ecuatoriano Joaquín Pinto, que data de 1876. Digna de contemplar es también la pinacoteca del siglo XVIII, cuya temática religiosa es predominante. El Salón Comedor está amoblado con sillones trabajados en madera, cuero repujado y broches de plata en excelente estado de conservación; una vitrina exhibe algunos enseres personales que tenía el héroe nacional, como su vajilla de porcelana, por ejemplo. En gran parte de las paredes de la casa cuelgan cuadros de la Virgen del Carmen, patrona de La Paz. Sobre un escritorio, el Salón de la Conspiración tiene gran parte de los manuscritos de don Pedro Domingo Murillo compilados en un archivo. Al lado, está la Sala Oratoria, un espacio muy común en la época colonial dedicado a las plegarias religiosas. Este apacible lugar, atesora una importante muestra de la pintura cusqueña con marquetería de pan de oro. Al final de la segunda planta, está la parte más íntima de toda la vieja vivienda: el dormitorio. Su lecho se ve impecable y contiene, al igual que toda la casa, muebles tallados con el estilo propio del Alto Perú, con prendas de tejidos en lana de vicuña y finos candelabros.

The Dining Room has wood carved chairs, embossed leather and silver clasps all that have been excellently conserved; a glass case shows off some personal belongings of this national hero, such as the porcelain dishware. On many parts of the walls, there are paintings of the Virgin of Carmen, the patron saint of La Paz. Above his desk, in the Salón de la Conspiración, many of the manuscripts of Pedro Domingo Murillo are compiled in an archive. Next to it is the Sala Oratoria, which was a space from colonial times dedicated to religious activities. This calm place holds the treasure of an important piece from Cuzco Art made with marquetry of gold. At the end of the second floor, the most intimate part of the house is found: the bedroom. The bed is still impeccable and intact and like other furniture in the house, they are carved in the style of Alto Peru, with coverings woven from vicuna wool and fine candelabras. 37

Years ago, Christian Dior and Agata Ruiz de la Prada were captivated by the Andean women’s pollera (a skirt style) and in fact the French designer included one in an unforgettable collection. Following a recent fashion week in Cochabamba (Bolivia), this same female skirt, which is commonly worn by native women in La Paz, received well-deserved applause when presented by the Aymara designer Eliana Paco as part of various outfits worthy of being shown on international runways. It is thus that the pollera with six petticoats, a bowler hat, a blouse and an embroidered shawl will be on the runway during New York’s September Fashion Week. And of course it has the perfect complements- huge earrings and gold brooches. It will be Eliana Paco’s first showing at this renowned New York fashion show, where she will proudly wear the traditional outfit of the cholitas (women from La Paz). La creativa boliviana está feliz y sin tiempo para nada: le faltan manos para atender a la prensa y los pedidos que llegaron a su negocio Diseños Esmeralda. “Gracias a las expresiones folclóricas hemos traspasado fronteras, pero lo que yo quería es que la chola paceña salga del baile y esté en una pasarela”, dice Eliana Paco. “Es un sueño que se está cumpliendo”. Aunque lo presentado en Cochabamba es de calidad exquisita, está trabajando minuciosamente en la colección que llevará a la “gran manzana”. “Quiero que todo sea perfecto; que las modelos luzcan elegantes de pies a cabeza”. En 1726, a Jonathan Swift no se le ocurrió incluir un aeropuerto para Liliput en su novela Los viajes de Gulliver porque la aeronáutica recién surgió a principios del siglo XX. Sin embargo, la feria Miniatur Wunderland de Hamburgo (Alemania) puede ostentar de tener una terminal aérea apta para los liliputienses. Se trata del aeropuerto a escala más grande del mundo y forma parte de una muestra permanente que, además, tiene una estación ferroviaria, y representaciones de los Alpes, Escandinavia, sitios emblemáticos de EE UU y Suiza. Todo es fantástico en el lugar. El aeródromo es tan increíblemente realista que los aviones de pasajeros carretean por la pista antes de despegar y salir volando por un hueco en la pared. Del otro extremo del salón regresan para aterrizar.
In 1726, it didn’t occur to Jonathan Swift to include an airport for Lilliput in his novel, Gulliver’s Travels, because aviation didn’t start until the beginning of the 20th Century. Nonetheless, the fair of Miniature Wonderland of Hamburg (Germany), can brag about having an air terminal apt for those of Lilliput. It is an airport based on a large scale and it forms part of a permanent collection, which also includes a railroad station, the Alps, Scandinavia and iconic locations of the USA and Switzerland. Everything is fantastic in this place. The airfield is so incredibly realistic that the passenger planes taxi down the runway before take off, and then fly out of whole in the wall. They return from the other end of the hall for landing.

El pasaporte es un documento oficial expedido en un país pero con validez internacional. Básicamente, sirve para acreditar que su portador puede entrar y salir de un territorio porque está autorizado a ello. Hasta aquí, seguro que estabas al tanto de eso; pero, ¿sabías por qué todos los pasaportes tienen forma de libreta de anotaciones? Porque, cuando aparecieron en la época medieval, para pasar por la puerta de una ciudad (de ahí el origen de su nombre), a los viajeros se les entregaba un documento similar donde se escribían los lugares a los que se les permitía entrar. No obstante, se considera que el rey Enrique V de Inglaterra, en el siglo XVI, inventó el pasaporte para demostrar en cualquier parte del mundo que se era inglés. La mayoría de los pasaportes cuentan con alrededor de 32 páginas. Si se acaban antes de su tiempo de vigencia, se solicita uno nuevo y listo. 48
The passport is an official document provided in a country that has international validity. Basically, the passport’s purpose is to give proof that its carrier can enter and leave a given territory because he or she is authorized to do so. Certainly, this has been information you already knew, but do you know why all passports are made in the form of a notebook? It is because when these documents first appeared during the Middle Ages they allowed you to pass through an entrance of the city (which is where the name came from), and travelers would present a similar document where the gatekeeper would write down the places that the traveller was allowed to go. However, King Henry the 5th of England is considered to have invented the passport in the 16th Century, when he made one to prove that he was English when he was in any part of the world. The majority of passports have about 32 pages. If the pages are filled up before the passport expires, you ask for a new one and you are ready to go.

Los biólogos aseguran que el primate no tenía intenciones de dañar al pequeño. Entonces: ¿qué hubieras hecho tú en el lugar de quienes dispararon a los leones y al gorila? ¿Acaso eran más importantes las vidas de los animales que las de las personas? La modernidad no desechó las recetas y más bien las hizo imprescindibles a la hora de festejar o para levantar el espíritu después de las celebraciones. Esta receta con choclo, papa, habas y queso se remonta al cerco de la ciudad de La Paz liderado por el aimara Tupac Katari, en 1781. Al no contar con otros productos agrícolas para alimentarse, la población recurrió a cultivar en sus patios. Fueron nueve meses de escasez y de consumo de este plato rico en carbohidratos.
This recipe with corn on the cob, broad beans and cheese dates back to the siege of La Paz led by the Aymara Tupak Katari in 1781. Having no other agricultural products with which to feed themselves, people took to cultivating on their patios. There were nine months of scarcity and of eating this dish rich in carbohydrates.

Aparte de papalisa y ají, tiene carne de vaca cebolla, tomate, ajo, pimienta, comino, habas y papa. El plato puede ir acompañado con arroz y queso rallado encima del ahogado. Cabe señalar que la papalisa, ruba, olluco, melloco o chugua es una variedad de papa.
Besides papalisa (a type of potato) and aji (a pepper), it also has beef, onion, tomato, garlic, pepper, cumin, broad beans and potatoes. This dish can be accompanied by rice and grated cheese on top of the sauce. It is worth mentioning that paplisa, ruba, olluco, melloco and chugua are all varieties of potatoes.

Se trata de un caldo a base de carne de cerdo, maíz blanco y chuño, todo condimentado con ají amarillo; hay quienes le agregan harina de pan para espesarlo. Generalmente, en Bolivia lo consumen durante las fiestas de Año Nuevo. This is a “paceña-made” product based on a French recipe from the 18th Century (doesn’t the name sound rather Parisian?). It is a pork-based broth, with white corn and chuño, all flavored with yellow aji. Some people thicken it with flour. In Bolivia, it is frequently eaten during New Year’s parties.

Tradicional sopa del altiplano andino, cuyos principales ingredientes son el chuño, la papa dulce, la carne de vaca (en algunos casos se usa charque) y el mote pelado. YPFB SE SUMÓ A LA CAMPAÑA “YO DIGO NO A LA INFLUENZA” El personal de Yacimientos Petrolíferos Fiscales Bolivianos (YPFB) se sumó a la campaña de vacunación contra la influenza impulsada por Sanofi Pasteur. Tras una charla informativa ofrecida por representantes de la compañía fabricante de vacunas más grande del mundo, cerca de 200 funcionarios fueron inmunizados con un antivirus que brinda mayor protección contra cuatro tipos de influenza. La vacuna, recomendada por la Organización Mundial de la Salud, es la única forma de prevenir la enfermedad que lleva más de 300 casos reportados en el país.

DESDE ASUNCIÓN DIRECTO A IQUIQUE En abril pasado, se abrió una nueva conexión regional entre Asunción e Iquique operada por Amaszonas Paraguay. Habían transcurrido varios años desde el último vuelo directo entre la capital paraguaya y el norte chileno, y ahora es nuevamente una realidad. Para desarrollar el potencial turístico y comercial existente entre ambas regiones, Amaszonas, en coordinación con entidades privadas de Iquique, organizó viajes de operadores de turismo y periodistas. Un grupo de 10 representantes de la prensa de Asunción visitó recientemente la urbe chilena, donde disfrutó de las comodidades hoteleras, los atractivos comerciales en Zofri y de la oferta gastronómica. ESTUVIMOS EN EL FESTIVAL DE TURISMO DE LAS CATARATAS A través de las alianzas desarrolladas con diferentes entidades del rubro turístico, Amaszonas participó en el reciente Festival de Turismo de las Cataratas que se efectúa en la ciudad de Foz de Iguazu (Brasil).
