About Us

W

elcome to the first edition of the Amazwe Tourism Directory magazine, a vibrant new development aiming to inject the local tourism industry with a fresh, clean cut and unique perspective. As South Africa’s quintessential travel directory it is our aim to branch out into creative and universal methods of exposure that will provide a larger, more diverse audience while offering the best, most informative resource for any and every traveller. South Africa’s spectacular scenery, engaging people and world-class infrastructure make it one of the most desired destinations in the world. In 2010 the sector was given a massive boost by the successful hosting of the World Cup, when the country received a record-breaking 8.1-million foreign visitors. South African tourism is a modern-day engine of growth and one of the countries largest and most important industries, with tourism providing one in every twelve jobs in South Africa. The South African tourism landscape is varied and….., with something to offer every traveller.

Eco-tourism

South Africa’s diverse climates range from tropical in the south-east to desert in the central region. The scenery runs the gamut from spectacular mountain ranges to vast grass plains, from coastline to meandering rivers to desert dunes. The country’s wildlife is far more varied than just the celebrated “Big Five”, and is supported by an extraordinary biological diversity. Three of South Africa’s eight Unesco World Heritage sites are natural sites, while one is a mixed cultural/natural site. South Africa is leading the way in one of the boldest cross-border initiatives currently unfolding in southern Africa, the development of transfrontier parks.

South Cultural tourism

South Africa is home to diverse cultures, ranging from the Zulus who resisted European conquest to the nomadic San of the Karoo desert. Each culture has evolved its own distinctive art forms, music and traditional rituals, while the descendants of colonial settlers have evolved variations of their European roots. South Africa’s history has been one of confrontation, but is now also known as one of reconciliation. World-class sites have been established to commemorate the country’s past and celebrate its new-found unity, while the number and quality of cultural villages, community and township tours has grown dramatically.

Business tourism

Africa is a popular destination for business travellers, who spend on average three times more than their leisure counterparts while crossing over significantly into leisure travel themselves, through tours before or after their business activities and through return trips in subsequent years. With its first-world infrastructure, balmy climate and breathtaking scenery – not to mention acres of golf courses – South Africa is an ideal location for international congresses and conventions.

Paleo-tourism

South Africa boasts numerous sites of great archaeological significance. The best known of these are the Sterkfontein, Swartkrans and Kromdraai sites that make up the Cradle of Humankind, one of the world’s richest concentrations of hominid fossils. Others include the uKhahlamba Drakensberg Park, host to the largest and most concentrated series of rock art paintings in Africa, and the Mapungubwe Cultural Landscape, site of an ancient and sophisticated African kingdom that long predated European colonisation. These are all Unesco World Heritage sites.

Adventure tourism

Being at the southern tip of a large continent, South Africa offers 3 000 kilometres of coastline along with breathtaking mountains – often side by side. The country’s diverse terrain, together with a climate suited to outdoor activities, make it an ideal hunting ground for adrenaline seekers. South Africa offers world-class climbing, surfing, diving, hiking, horseback safaris, mountain biking, river rafting – and just about any other extreme activity you can name, all supported by dedicated operators.

Sports tourism

World-class venues and supporting infrastructure, top international events, and South Africans’ passion for sport combine to make the country a huge drawcard for sports fans. More than 10% of foreign tourists come to South Africa to watch or participate in sport events, with spectators accounting for 60% to 80% of these arrivals. Amazwe is the result of dedication and hard work from all involved. The Amazwe team is made up of highly skilled, passionate and driven individuals who value quality, efficiency and service delivery while providing outstanding results. We are exceptionally excited to share our debut issue with you and look forward to building a long and lasting relationship with our readers

Chris Du Plessis South Africa’s most prolific wildlife photographer by drew hook

C

hris Du Plessis, the face behind Photos of Africa, was born in Bloemfontein, South Africa, in 1974. He grew up in Hazyview, Mpumalanga, and spent most of his free time in the Kruger Park, spotting, observing and photographing wild animals, a hobby which would inform much of his adult life. After Matriculating in 1992,he began assisting his parents in the operation of a 4 x 4 touring business before moving onto the family owned Bush camp bordering the Manyeleti Game Reserve, in Limpopo. At the age of 22 Chris received his first camera, sealing his destiny for the foreseeable future. Among his early achievements in photography was becoming the first wildlife photographer to provide high quality screensavers with wild animals found throughout the Kruger National Park. Most impressive amongst these photos was his ability to capture Leopards, a notoriously difficult animal to document, in their natural habitat. With his natural talent and passion for photography, Chris has tirelessly built the Photos of Africa brand, building upon a successful and exceptional portfolio of animals in the wild. 2006 marked the year where he met his significant other, Sarah, in Cape Town. The two were married and lived happily in the Mother City until 2011. But, as with many people born away from the hustle and bustle of city life, Chris felt the call of the Bush once more. And so he found himself moving back to the wildlife capital of Hoedspruit in Limpopo, South Africa. Shortly before the big move to Limpopo, Chris teamed up with SA Direct to provide them with stock footage of local wildlife. From here on the Photos of Africa brand grew in leaps and bounds, covering the diverse regions of South Africa for commissioned projects from governments,

universities as well as the national and international private sector The increased exposure allowed Chris to showcase the wildlife of South Africa in travel films, still photography and documentaries, and more importantly allowed for an outlet to highlight conservation in Africa. Chris’s overriding passion lies in filming his country to bringing attention to the beautiful landscapes and wildlife. He has subsequently set up a South Africa Travel Channel, which features free travel documentaries for various resorts, safaris and National Parks. Currently the documentaries about Southern Africa resorts and regions are being broadcasted daily in 30 000 hotel rooms, guesthouses and game farms around the country. The annual growth rate is approximately 25% and a detailed report of all resorts where the material is broadcasted is given to all his valued clients once a year, or on request. Photos of Africa online travel channel currently showcase 530 lodges, activities and tourism attractions.

Photos of Africa’s Vision

In Chris’s own words, the primary goal of Photos of Africa is to showcase South African wildlife and scenic beauty. He strictly adheres to the following principles: • • •

To be worthy of our Maker, our Client and our audience To encourage quality compliancy, create skill development opportunities and fully support all policies of disabled employment and equity To deliver a visually pleasing informative, entertaining product that contributes to the arena of tourism within South Africa www.amazwe.com

Chris du Plessis Gigapans of South Africa

Chris first learned about the Gigapan EPIC Pro camera after discovering an instructional video on YouTube. He could see that the possibilities for using the technology to promote travel and tourism in South Africa were endless. “Immediately a light went on and I wanted one,” said Chris. “I knew there were so many possibilities these days for the EPIC Pro, and different ways to use your camera can really open more doors in the market.” Chris uses gigapans captured with the EPIC Pro in his documentary films to highlight tourist and travel destinations. By adding zoom and pan effects, his clients can zoom into the detail of a city or a landscape to learn more about a location. And with mobile compatibility, images become portable and visitors can view them as they travel to help learn the locations of city buildings and mountain ranges. “As technology moves on, I always try to be one step ahead in the market and with mobile applications. You can hold a gigapan in your hand to explore different spots or look at a landscape or city. If you are standing at a particular viewpoint and you’ve forgotten your binoculars or it is an overcast day, a gigapan can allow you to zoom into the detail of your location and help orientate you to find your way. amazwe | Your Quintessential Travel Directory

Wildlife Conservation in South Africa and abroad by drew hook

E

ducating people in wildlife conservation is the key to maintaining and preserving the natural wonders of South Africa. One such project is offered by Projects Abroad, with the aim of helping to conserve, study biodiversity and maintain the many reserves around South Africa and abroad. The South Africa Conservation project involves a collaboration of different reserves and environmental groups in South Africa and Botswana working together. With the help of volunteers they aim to conserve wildlife and bush ecosystems and to share knowledge about the diversity of the area. All of this takes place in an incredible location with skilled and experienced guidance from local staff. Projects Abroad runs a nature reserve called Wild at Tuli in the wilderness of the Southern African Bushveld. They are based on the Botswana side of the Limpopo River, right on the frontier with South Africa. From hippos to elephants, and kudu to ostriches, this is the heart of wild Africa and an opportunity for any vlunteer to experience living in a wild landscape teeming with animals. This project is great for anyone with a passion for nature and the great outdoors. It offers adventure and the chance to learn about the fascinating world of African Bushveld Conservation. You do not need previous experience to contribute to this project. Volunteers are welcome on a gap year, a career break, for university research, or a volunteer vacation.

Conservation Volunteers in Southern Africa

Volunteers on this project can take part in a wide variety of activities, including: • Elephant research studying population dynamics • Baobab tree surveys and protection • Soil erosion control • Removal of old fencing • Dam building and protection • Helping construct natural water holes for animals • Mammal and bird inventory using visual sightings at observation points, camera traps, and identification of tracks and signs • Building viewing hides • Clearing and repairing existing roads and designing and marking new roads • Anti-poaching patrols • Learning skills in animal and plant identification • Volunteers on average work five or six hours a day. The more strenuous work is reserved for the mornings when its cooler and you will have an additional two hours of work is done in the late afternoon. The middle of the day is normally devoted to eating, sleeping, swimming, relaxing, and keeping cool. • The work is divided up among all of our volunteers using a weekly schedule. Expert local staff are on hand to supervise activities and provide support.

The Aims of the Conservation Project in South Africa and Botswana

The project aims to create a protected conservancy, bringing together Projects Abroad Wild at Tuli and other reserves in the area to create a central Tuli block. Once this is achieved they will be able to join a Trans Frontier Conservation Area, consisting of conservation blocks from South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Botswana. This is an exciting new initiative, combining conservation efforts across international boundaries, including game reserves, national parks, and conservation areas. It is all for the benefit of wildlife, local people, and future generations. Reserves like Wild at Tuli are essential havens for wildlife. Drought, illegal hunting, desertification, and land degradation are major environmental problems in Sub-Saharan Africa. Human encroachment onto wild areas has caused wildlife populations to decrease. This all adds to the importance of legally protecting land to ensure the survival of African wildlife and preserving land in its natural state. Wild at Tuli reserve is 5000 hectares and the conservation efforts are continuous. Volunteers will get involved in a wide variety of different on-going projects. Data collected across these projects is used to gain a greater understanding of the populations and their ecology, which is passed on to various co-operating groups. By joining forces it will be possible to create one powerful voice with an aim of conserving a big enough landmass to restore the original migratory routes of large indigenous mammals. www.amazwe.com

Brian Jones has been helping and caring for injured and orphaned animals from the age of four and thus he brought a great deal of knowledge and experience to the establishment of this rehabilitation centreVery soon a variety of animals were being brought to him that were either orphaned, injured or poisoned and in need of help. Sibuya Game Reserve

S

ibuya, one of South Africa’s most unique Safari destinations, has more navigable river than any other game reserve in South Africa. Consequently as a birding destination it is hard to beat: there are nearly 400 different species. This breathtakingly beautiful game reserve is sanctuary to an abundance of diverse wildlife from elephants to otters, and almost everything in between, including the Big Five. Sibuya offers accommodation in two private and exclusive luxury tented game lodges and prides itself on superb cuisine. Sibuya’s reception is in the holiday village of Kenton-on-Sea in the Eastern Cape Province, about 140 kms (80 miles) equidistant from Port Elizabeth and East London. A natural extension to any trip, from Cape Town up the Garden Route, and easily accessible from Port Elizabeth which is a short flip from the major cities of Cape Town, Johannesburg and Durban. Charter flights to Port Alfred are less than a 20min transfer to the game park.

Accomodation Offered Forest Camp

Perfectly situated on the banks of the Kariega River, but tucked unobtrusively away into the vegetation. Adopting a low impact model, Forest Camp’s accommodation is built on expansive, slightly raised wooden decks and has long wooden walkways through pristine thicket, which allow elderly and disabled guests to move around with ease. Sibuya offers true luxury tented accommodation: each tent measures 40 square meters (450 square feet), is adjoined by a large en-suite bathroom, accommodates two adults sharing in top-of-the-range king or twin beds, and sits under an all-weather roof. Wide decks offer views of the river or forest. Cot or camp beds are available for children sharing with adults.

Contact Details TEL:+27(0)46 648 1040 EMAIL:reservations@sibuya.co.za ADDRESS: 39 Eastbourne Rd.

Kenton-on-Sea

River Camp

The smaller, more intimate River Camp has four tents, ideal for families with children, or for soleuse specialist groups. The luxury tents measure 75 square meters (800 square feet), are adjoined by an en-suite bathroom and accommodate two adults sharing in top-of-the-range king or twin beds, and sits under an all-weather roof. Decks offer views of the river or forest. Cot or camp beds are available for children sharing with adults.

Bush Lodge

Sibuya’s Bush Lodge is set in a pristine wilderness paradise only minutes from the main reserve. After departing from Kenton and enjoying our unique boat cruise up the Kariega Estuary, Bush Lodge guests enjoy lunch in the Reserve before a short transfer by game vehicle takes them to the Lodge.

Things to do Activities

The most popular activities on Sibuya are the game drives and walks, but many guests also take advantage of the opportunity to try their hand at fishing from the camp jetties. Canoes at the camps are regularly used by guests, keen paddlers and novices alike. Bespoke packages can be arranged for birding enthusiasts and nature lovers who would like to learn more about the environment, guiding and tracking skills.

Specialist Bird Guide

We know a birding holiday is not just about where you go, it’s who you go with - our birding safaris are led by Mike Pearson who has been involved with wildlife conservation and birding for over 30 years in various different fields - a lifetime’s experience birding in Southern Africa.

Bird Watching

For the avid birder, few destinations can offer anything close to the very special experience that Sibuya visitors enjoy. Coastal, riverine, forest, savannah and a huge host of migrant birds add to compile an impressive list that approaches 400 species, and covers such a variety of birds and habitats as to be like visiting three or four destinations at the same time. Take a boat or canoe up the estuary to search for some of the 6 varieties of local kingfisher. Or head downstream to the beach to see the multitude of waders, terns and gulls. www.amazwe.com
