Jesus Christ Superstar was the first musical by Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice to be produced for the professional stage. The show opened on 12th October 1971 at the Mark Hellinger Theatre, New York, with the London production opening on 9th August 1972, with Paul Nicholas (Jesus), Stephen Tate (Judas) and Dana Gillespie (Mary Magdalene). By the time it closed, after some eight years and 3,358 performances, it had become the longest-running musical in West End history. The Orpheus Club is delighted to be returning to the King’s, to present a brand new production of Jesus Christ Superstar to Glasgow audiences. This Webber/Rice opera marks the second time that The Orpheus Club has presented one of their works – a sell-out production of Evita, the Scottish amateur stage premiere, was presented in 2002. Jesus Christ Superstar includes such iconic numbers as I Don’t Know How to Love Him, Herod’s Song, and Hosanna, and this new production is a must for all lovers of 20th century musical theatre at its best. Walter Paul directs, Andrew S. Nicol is Musical Director, Ian Irving is Lighting Designer, and Catherine Dunn Choreographer – the same team which brought The Orpheus Club’s highly acclaimed interpretation of Fiddler on the Roof to this theatre earlier this year.

By Sue Fabisch Motherhood: The Musical is a hilarious, 90-minute, musical journey through the lives of four women. There’s Barbara, the over-worked, underpaid, stressed-out mother of five. There’s Gayle, the lawyer, who works too much and barely sees her kids. There’s Sally, a single mum who’s struggling to juggle it all and Amy, the naïve 20-something about to have her first child. As the three friends throw Amy a baby shower, the truth about motherhood, (the good, the bad and the ugly) all come out into the open: The nappies, the dirty laundry, the lazy husbands and everything in between. THE GOOD, THE BAD, AND THE LAUNDRY.

Cherished for generations, Gypsy tells the tale of vaudeville’s decline and of a domineering stage mother’s inadvertent creation of a burlesque stripper. Gypsy introduced such song standards as Let Me Entertain You, Everything’s Coming Up Roses and You Gotta Get a Gimmick, to name just a few. The role of Mama Rose will be performed by Scotland’s own Terry Neason, the award-winning singer and actress whose previous shows include Edith Piaf in Piaf, Jacque Brel’s Alive and Well and Living in Paris, Children of Coincidence at the Gaiety Theatre Dublin, The Government Inspector at the Almeida Theatre in London and playing Top Dog opposite Paul O’Grady in Cell Block H - The Musical in London’s West End. The Apollo Players, one of the UK’s premiere theatre companies, have been staging musicals of distinction in Glasgow for over 40 years. Some recent successes include: West Side Story, Fame, Guys and Dolls, The Full Monty and Oliver! This production of Gypsy will be the first time in 30 years that the show has been performed in the King’s Theatre. With a cast of 50 performers and a full 25 piece orchestra, Gyspy is not to be missed! 16

PHIL MCINTYRE ENTERTAINMENT, QUEEN THEATRICAL PRODUCTIONS AND TRIBECA THEATRICAL PRESENT

SEE PAGE 3 FOR DETAILS

ONE DREAM, ONE VISION, ONE SMASH HIT! Phil McIntyre Entertainment, Queen Theatrical Productions and Tribeca Theatrical Productions present

‘THE MUSIC IS GREAT, THE DANCING IS SUPERB, THE SPECTACLE IS UNSURPASSED’ THE SCOTSMAN

‘WOULD PUT MANY A ROCK CONCERT TO SHAME!’ STV

‘BEYOND DAZZLING!’ EDINBURGH EVENING NEWS

The worldwide smash-hit musical by Queen and Ben Elton makes itsGlasgow debut in January 2011! Since 2002 over 11 million theatregoers in 17 countries have been thrilled to see this awe-inspiring production. With 24 of Queen’s biggest hits delivered in a show that boasts the scale and spectacle that marked the band’s legendary live performances, this theatrical phenomenon is not to be missed! When it became news some years back that one of Britain’s most phenomenally successful comedy writers, Ben Elton, was teaming up with legends of rock, Queen, for a musical, we all wondered what such a unique collaboration would turn out. Especially when screen icon Robert de Niro became so impressed after attending the original workshop that his company Tribeca came on board. The result was a new chapter in theatre history – We Will Rock You a rock ‘theatrical’ which defied all comparisons and has gone on to become a global smash hit. ’THE AUDIENCE HAS THE RIGHT TO EXPECT SOMETHING AS FABULOUS AND GRAND AND THEATRICAL AS THE MUSIC ITSELF’ BEN ELTON Includes 24 of Queen’s greatest hits:

Radio Ga Ga, I Want To Break Free, Somebody to Love, Killer Queen, Bohemian Rhapsody, Don’t Stop Me Now, Under Pressure, Another One Bites The Dust, We Are the Champions, We Will Rock You 24

CREATIVE LEARNING

SUMMER ACTIVITIES AT THE THEATRE ROYAL FOR AGES 8 - 16 To book for all of the below please call 0844 871 7647

THE LEGEND OF THORNY HOLLOW Mon 5 - Fri 9 Jul 10am - 4pm daily Cost: £110 Performance: 9 Jul 3pm Come and join us this summer for our week-long summer school. Written especially for us, this tale of magic and intrigue starts when a group of friends are left to their own devices in the city. Enter stage right the world of Forest Mysteria with demons, dragons and a very unpleasant character who goes by the name of Jaggy Nettle. But how do they get home?

COME AND JOIN OUR GLEE CLUB! Mon 12 - Thu 15 Jul 10am - 12.30pm Cost: £10 per session This summer we are giving you a taste of what it might be like to be in McKinley High’s Glee Club. Are you a Rachel, Finn or perhaps one of the Cheerios? Just as long as you are 28

not a Sue Sylvester! Each session will be a completely new number so you can come to one or all of the sessions. At the end of your Glee Club class we will invite friends and family (limited space) to see your finished number.

THEATRICAL MAKE-UP MASTER CLASSES Mon 12 - Thu 15 Jul 1pm - 4pm Cost: £15 per session Interested in theatrical, film and TV special effects? Do you want to learn how to look like Bella or Edward from Twilight: New Moon. Make-up master classes can be combined with the Glee Club classes above if you wish to make it a real theatrical skills day out!

VAMPIRE AND GHOULS Mon 12 Jul Do you want to stay forever young? What would you look like as a vampire? Do you glitter in the sunlight, or burst into flames?

AVATAR Tue 13 Jul A fan of the film? Recreate what you saw on screen! Or do you think you could design a better Avatar? Here’s your chance!

BLOOD AND GORE Wed 14 Jul One of our favourite workshops, we have no idea why when everyone who leaves looks as if they should go to the nearest A&E department! In this workshop you will be experimenting with a new technique that creates wounds out of gelatine.
