Offering an enjoyable mix of the very in best drama, musicals, ballet and opera is always something we strive to do – and this season is no exception with two brand new companies touring to us for the very first time. English National Ballet, the UK’s largest touring ballet company are bringing Rudolf Nureyev’s faithful retelling of Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet to us in November. With over 60 dancers, a full orchestra and magnificent sets and costumes, ENB are guaranteed to be a very welcome addition to our already spectacular programme. Also touring to us for the very first time in November is Shakespeare’s Globe’s hilarious and highly acclaimed production of The Merry Wives of Windsor. Described by the Daily Telegraph as ‘The feelgood hit of the summer’, I’m sure this brilliant constructed comedy will be a must see. This year you also have a great opportunity to end the season roaring with laughter with the Ambassador Theatre Group’s production of Monty Python’s Spamalot. Starring EastEnders’ Todd Carty and Emmerdale’s Amy Nuttall this hilarious musical is on its first ever UK tour and is sure to leave audiences in the perfect mood for Christmas.
Ambassador Friends’ discounts at your home venue and ATG’s other regional AND West End venues No online fees for most productions and much, much more!
Going forward on the Christmas theme, this year’s pantomime title has changed from Jack and the Beanstalk to Dick Whittington. I know that this change may come as a surprise – however, we have been given an unexpected and unmissable opportunity to present this fabulous new production of Dick Whittington. We are working very closely with the pantomime producer First Family Entertainment and I am looking forward to announcing the news about this year’s exciting cast very shortly. Please watch this space!

Desmond Barritt & Malcolm Sinclair After a sell-out success in London, Alan Bennett’s latest smash-hit play comes to Milton Keynes. Oxford 1972. Benjamin Britten, sailing uncomfortably close to the wind with his new opera, Death in Venice, seeks advice from his former collaborator and friend, W H Auden. During this imagined meeting, their first for 25 years, they are observed and interrupted by, amongst others, their future biographer and a young man from the local bus station. Deeply funny and thought provoking, this new play reflects on growing old, on creativity and inspiration, and on persisting when all passion’s spent: ultimately, on the habit of art.

The
Merry Wives of Windsor By William Shakespeare Directed by Christopher Luscombe Starring Christopher
Benjamin, Serena Evans & Sarah Woodward
Following its highly acclaimed, sell-out run at Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre, The Merry Wives of Windsor comes to Milton Keynes Theatre for one week only as part of the Globe’s first ever large-scale UK tour. Imagining that Mistress Ford and Mistress Page have each fallen for him, the fat knight Sir John Falstaff decides to seduce them both, as much for their husbands’ money as for their personal charms. Wise to the old rogue’s tricks, the women turn the tables on him with a series of humiliating assignations and a very damp, extremely smelly laundry basket. Gutsy, colloquial and bustling with vivid characters, Shakespeare’s hilarious and brilliantly constructed farce gave birth to a tradition that reaches down to the modern TV sitcom. Christopher Benjamin plays the irresistibly lovable Falstaff, Serena Evans and Sarah Woodward join him as the merry wives and Andrew Havill as Ford. 18

And now for something completely different... Audiences all around the world have been roaring with laughter since Monty Python’s Spamalot, by Eric Idle and John DuPrez, won the Tony Award for Best Musical in 2005. Spamalot tells the legendary tale of King Arthur and the (cancelled Knights of the Round Table and features a bevy health + safety) (or possibly a brace) of beautiful show girls, witch burnings not to mention cows, killer rabbits and French people. The show features the hilarious songs He Is Not Dead Yet, Knights Of The Round Table, Find Your Grail and of course the Nation’s Favourite Comedy Song Always Look On The Bright Side Of Life. New Adventures’ new production of Cinderella is a thrilling and evocative journey through London during the Second World War. A chance meeting results in a magical night for Cinderella and her dashing young RAF pilot, together just long enough to fall in love before being parted by the horrors of the Blitz. Matthew Bourne’s vivid storytelling has never been more heart-stopping and touching, creating a unique and unforgettable depiction of a familiar and beloved fable.
Winners of the Critics’ Circle National Dance Awards and the TMA Theatre Award, The Trocks’ combination of pure comedy, extraordinary technical prowess and genuine love of ballet has made them a global phenomenon since they formed in New York in 1974.

Strictly Come Dancing’s Craig Revel Horwood directs an amazing company of actors and musicians in an extraordinary new staging of the classic musical Chess. Written by Tim Rice and ABBA’s Björn Ulvaeus and Benny Andersson, Chess has one of the greatest musical theatre scores of all time including One Night In Bangkok, Pity The Child, Anthem, You And I and, of course, I Know Him So Well which became a number one hit for Elaine Paige and Barbara Dickson.
Watch out Milton Keynes, ballet’s very-grandes dames are back! After sell-out performances in 2008, Les Ballets Trockadero de Monte Carlo (or ‘The Trocks’ to their friends) return with a fantastic programme, a lorry load of costume changes and lashings of diva attitude.

MILTON KEYNES CITY ORCHESTRA
Milton Keynes Theatre places itself at the heart of our community. We are committed to working alongside local people and organisations to increase the cultural life of MK. If you are interested in hiring the theatre please contact our General Manager John Young on 01908 547500.
Porgy and Bess in Concert: Love and Power Sun 14 Nov 7.30pm Milton Keynes Chorale, the Danesborough Chorus and Milton Keynes City Orchestra, conducted by Stuart Dunlop, present three works exploring the grand passions of love and power. Gershwin’s heartbreaking Porgy and Bess leaps to life in Catfish Row, Summer Time, I Got Plenty of Nothin’ and many other well-loved tunes clothe this tale in the music of joy and passion. The Coronation scene from Boris Godunov is a grand musical celebration, but a dark secret lurks in Boris’ dangerous love of power, whilst Prokofiev’s music for Romeo and Juliet explores this story of love batting enmity with grace and subtlety. Join them for an evening of glorious music.
Fame - THE MUSICAL Sun 22 Jan 5pm & 8pm MK Community Theatre Company presents Fame - The Musical directed by award winning local director Paula Diamond. Fame follows students of the famous New York’s School of the Performing Arts through a gruelling four-year course. A bittersweet but ultimately uplifting story that explores issues facing many young people today; prejudice, identity, self-worth, literacy and the pursuit of your dreams.

The The Things Is (For 3) Fri 9 Jul - Sun 12 Sep Milton Keynes Gallery presents a major solo exhibition of work by a London-based artist who emerged in the early 1990s. Using sound, performance, sculpture and collage the artist experiments with language and identity to provoke unexpected contradictions and humorous outcomes.
Andrew Lord fri 24 Sep - Sun 28 Nov Since his earliest exhibitions in the late 1970s, British artist Andrew Lord has explored sculptural and pictorial concerns with clay, plaster, beeswax, bronze, drawing, printmaking and video. This exhibition charts the development of Lord’s practice from the minute observation of nature and playful citation of modern art to casts from the body and use of memory as a sculptural tool.
