Richmond Theatre’s 110th anniversary celebrations are fast approaching their finale and there are a number of events that mark the theatre’s heritage taking place this autumn. First of these is a performed reading of our anniversary play Tender Souls, on Thursday 5 August. The young people pictured have collected memories of Richmond Theatre and used them to write a piece of verbatim theatre that explores and celebrates social and personal facets of Richmond Theatre’s 110 years. The play, together with our exhibition, which opens at the Museum of Richmond on Saturday 18 September, represents the culmination of the Richmond Theatre Trust and Heritage Lottery Funded project: Richmond Theatre 110. For more information on all of Richmond Theatre’s forthcoming anniversary events, including an Open Day on Sunday 19 September, please turn to page 29. We hope that you will join us to celebrate the theatre’s heritage and 110th anniversary.
Our Richmond Theatre 110 project playwrights are working hard on their play Tender Souls.

‘GOLDING’S IS A TOUR-DE-FORCE TRIBUTE TO ERIC MORECAMBE’
WILLIAM SHAKESPEARE HAMLET, ACT IV, SCENE V
THE DAILY TELEGRAPH By Tim Whitnall Directed by Guy Masterson Starring BOB
Direct from its smash West End run, Bob Golding‘s extraordinary portrayal commemorates the 25th anniversary of Eric Morecambe’s untimely final curtain. Celebrating the wonderful life of Britain’s best loved comic, this is a moving portrait of an affectionate lad with funny bones, a born entertainer, a big-hearted perfectionist.
Exactly 35 years after a certain grumpy super-sleuth with an eye for the ladies and a thirst for real ale made his first appearance in Colin Dexter’s novel Last Bus to Woodstock, he’s back. Inspector Morse takes to the stage this autumn in the UK premiere of the all-new murder mystery, House of Ghosts. By special arrangement with Colin Dexter and starring Colin Baker (Dr Who) as Morse, Alma Cullen, the writer behind four of the hugely successful ITV episodes and director Robin Herford (Woman in Black), bring the inscrutable detective to audiences across the UK in what promises to be one of the theatrical events of the year. Since Oxford undergraduate days, Morse has regarded theatre director Lawrence Baxter as the only truly evil man he has ever met. So what happens when, twenty-odd years later, Morse finds Baxter at the centre of a murder case that involves the on-stage death of a young actress? 8

It’s 1775 and the fashionable world descends on Bath, to take the waters, show off their finery, enjoy the gossip and pursue romance. Amongst them are some of the most extraordinary comic characters to grace the stage: the verbally misguided Mrs Malaprop, her absurdly romantic niece Lydia Languish, the blinkered Sir Anthony Absolute, the blustering Irishman Sir Lucius O’Trigger and the bumpkin Bob Acres. Throughout the course of a single day these suitors and schemers and their servants indulge in an assortment of hilariously extravagant intrigues before everyone is paired off to their own satisfaction. Much-loved actress Penelope Keith (Entertaining Angels, The Importance of Being Earnest, Relatively Speaking and The Good Life on TV) plays Mrs Malaprop. Peter Bowles is one of Britain’s most distinguished actors (Separate Tables, The Misanthrope, The Browning Version, Swansong and The Bounder and The Irish RM for TV). Penelope Keith and Peter Bowles also starred together in one of the most watched British sitcoms of all time, To The Manor Born, with viewing figures of many millions. The Rivals will see them sparring together on stage for the first time. 10

Then fate throws Gerald a lifeline. He discovers that his old watch, left to him by his father, is surprisingly valuable. If he sold it at auction his money troubles could be over. Adapted from the first book of FLORA THOMPSON’S trilogy. A heart-warming portrayal of 19th-century country life. Following the success of the award-winning BBC television series, Bill Kenwright presents a fresh new revival of Keith Dewhurst’s original stage adaptation of the much-loved Lark Rise to Candleford. Based on the first book of Flora Thompson’s trilogy of semi-autobiographical novels, this heart-warming play was first performed at London’s National Theatre in 1978 and was nominated for two Olivier awards. Seen through the eyes of young Laura Timms, the play follows a day in the life and relationships of the farm workers, craftsmen and gentry of the fictional hamlet of Lark Rise at the end of the nineteenth century. It is the first day of harvest, and the villagers celebrate with the simple pleasures of music, song and dance, creating a moving and evocative picture of a forgotten England.

We are delighted to welcome back Moscow City Ballet, founded in 1988 by former Bolshoi soloist and choreographer Victor Smirnov Golovanov. Both their productions combine sublime musical scores, played by a live orchestra, with the artistry and grace for which Russian ballet is renowned. Prokofiev’s score for Romeo and Juliet inspired lyrical pas de deux, bustling crowd scenes and high drama. Against the backdrop of Renaissance Verona, the tale of the star-crossed teenage lovers unfolds from their first meeting to their untimely, tragic end. With exquisite choreography and Tchaikovsky’s romantic score, Swan Lake is the world’s bestloved ballet. Part fairytale, part tragedy, Prince Siegfried’s love for Odette, the enchanted Swan Queen, builds to a soaring climax in which true love conquers the forces of evil.

ONE NIGHT SHOWS JANE MCDONALD
START THE CAR BUMBLE TAKES TO THE ROAD
SUN 12 SEPTEMBER 7.30pm
THU 28 OCTOBER 7.30pm
Brian Shaw presents a magical evening of music and laughter, starring Britain’s best-loved diva, international recording artiste and television star, the incomparable Jane McDonald. An amazing event featuring many of the best-loved songs from Jane’s fabulous repertoire. A warm and compelling evening’s entertainment which is proving a smash hit throughout the UK. Jane, together with her brilliant musicians and backing singers, brings the audience to their feet night after night.
Come and discover the world according to Bumble, aka David Lloyd, the nation’s favourite cricket commentator.
ARDAL O’HANLON MON 25 OCTOBER 7.30pm In his new stand-up show, Ardal O’Hanlon laughs in the face of mounting adversity - recession, inclement weather, an aging body, and impending doom. He fearlessly turns the spotlight on surviving relationships, raising children and… the Swiss. A highly acclaimed stand-up, Ardal is also known for his much-loved characters in hit TV shows Father Ted, My Hero and Big Bad World.
JEREMY HARDY TUE 26 OCTOBER 7.30pm Jeremy’s perhaps best remembered as a much younger man, but there is nothing he can do about that now. Still alive and able to speak unaided for lengthy periods, this show will not so much be a one-man show as an under-staffed cavalcade. Jeremy is best known for his appearances in News Quiz and Sorry I Haven’t A Clue.
PAUL ZERDIN SPONGE FEST ON TOUR 2010 WED 27 OCTOBER 7.30pm Arguably Britain’s most talented and leading ventriloquist and comedian, Paul Zerdin, was by far the stand out performer of last year’s Royal Variety Show had a complete sell-out Edinburgh Fringe run and is the star of numerous other TV shows. Come and see Paul and friends, Sam, Albert, Baby and a few new tricks up his sleeves.
FORCES SWEETHEARTS THU 28 OCTOBER 2pm Forces Sweethearts has been wowing audiences since 1995 and for 2010 their show will feature all the old favourites - Vera Lynn, Gracie Fields, Marlene Dietrich, Carmen Miranda and Anne Shelton. Beryl, Carolyn and Jenny are our three sweethearts who bring you a two-hour show with all your favourite songs from the great vocalists who helped raise morale during the wartime forties. 24
In Start The Car! Bumble takes us on a fun-filled journey through memories of more than forty years in the game, sharing tales of all sizes about the biggest names in world cricket; from Sir Ian Botham to ‘Sir’ Geoffrey Boycott, and all the runs, wickets and laughs in between. He is joined in the passenger seat by his friend and renowned cricket writer, Peter Hayter.
JULIAN CLARY LORD OF THE MINCE SUN 7 NOVEMBER 7.30pm Julian has graciously agreed to extend his Lord Of The Mince tour to bring even more joy to the people of Britain this autumn following his 2009 sell-out tours of the UK, Australia and New Zealand! ‘I can’t stop now - I’m 50. The shame of it! This will be an intimate evening – a celebration, no less, of my 25 years in the camp spotlight: how I got there and why I refuse to leave. Come and see me before they put me in a home for tired old knackers.’ ‘LOTS OF CAMP SMUT AND DOUBLE ENTENDRES. SIDE-SPLITTINGLY HILARIOUS.’ DAILY MIRROR
HHHH
JOHN SIMPSON UNRELIABLE SOURCES SUN 14 NOVEMBER 7.30pm How the 20th Century Was Reported
Part of Richmond & Twickenham Literature Festival
One of our greatest reporters gives his vivid and typically opinionated account of how British media reported key moments in our history. Simpson will examine ways in which the media has changed and reveal how it often knowingly – and at times irresponsibly – manipulates events. With a forensic eye for detail, he will ask whether the press can ever be truly independent – and, if it can, would we really want it to be?
RICH HALL SUN 28 NOVEMBER 7.30pm Rich Hall has been charming sell-out audiences for years so it’s a real thrill to finally welcome this grouchy, deadpan comic genius to Richmond. Star of the recent critically acclaimed BBC4 documentary, How the West Was Lost, Edinburgh Fringe favourite, panel show QI regular and Perrier Award winner Rich Hall is back on the road. ‘NOW IS THE TIME TO GRAB THIS CHANCE TO SEE THE GREAT MAN AT WORK.’ THE GUARDIAN 25

Hugh Dennis’s popularity has catapulted since their last tour, following his role in the award-winning Outnumbered (BBC1) and his quickwitted quips as a regular panellist on Mock the Week (BBC2). He and Steve Punt also enjoy continued success in the award-winning and acclaimed BBC Radio 4 programme The Now Show.

As well as much-loved classics, audiences will be treated to a series of humorous spoof film clips depicting the events that turned a scruffy blues band into a legend.
