Here at the King’s Theatre we are delighted to open our doors to some of the biggest musicals in the theatre’s recent past when London’s West End ‘pays a visit’ to Bath Street during the course of the year. The Sound of Music, undoubtedly the world’s best-loved musical, is coming to Glasgow for the first time ever in May and stars Jason Donovan and Verity Rushworth (Hairspray, Emmerdale). Dirty Dancing, based on the phenomenal world-wide hit film, will be coming to the city in this, its Scottish première. This is the first time the show has toured the UK since it opened in London 7 years ago, so if you’re a fan of the film or simply a lover of great musicals then this really is not to be missed. Other highlights later in the year include the classic Evita, Jekyll & Hyde starring Glasgow’s own Marti Pellow, Tell Me On A Sunday with Claire Sweeney and for something a little bit different, Avenue Q! You may have noticed the refurbishment of the seating in the Upper Circle, part of the King’s ongoing restoration. We are very lucky to have this particular stage supported by actor Billy Boyd who realises just how fitting it is that the King’s ‘crown is being well and truly polished once again’. You too can play a part in recreating Scotland’s most comfortable theatre by sponsoring a seat and supporting our fundraising. Further details can be found in the foyer of the theatre or by contacting Alison Rhodes, Acting Development Manager on 0141 240 1318. Following a successful first-round pass from the Heritage Lottery Fund, a development phase is underway for the restoration project Long Live the King’s. If our application is successful, the project will restore the building’s exterior and front of house areas back to their original 1904 layout and decoration, while celebrating the theatre’s fascinating history through a wide-ranging intergenerational oral history project. If you’re not already following us on Facebook or Twitter, now is as good a time as any. This is the quickest way of getting the latest news, reviews, photos and everything else that happens backstage! Not only that but there are also unique opportunities to join us for press and group launches and other special events. We also want to hear from you, so if you have any comments or ideas which you think would help to improve your experience here at the King’s, or at our sister venue the Theatre Royal, please do get in touch. You can email me at jameshaworth@theambassadors.com. I look forward to welcoming you to the King’s very soon! James Haworth General Manager

Cradle To Rave is the brand new one man show from Lenny Henry, fresh from his award-winning stint in Othello.
Scotland’s Danny Bhoy embarks on a limited 10-date city tour of the UK on the back of his spectacular British TV debut in Live At The Apollo. He is one of the most popular and welltravelled comedians working today and until now British audiences have only had rare opportunities to see ‘Scotland’s brightest hope since Billy Connolly’. His unique brand of personal storytelling and razor sharp wit, combined with his easy going relaxed style have helped to make him into one of the most in-demand and critically acclaimed comedians around the world.
As seen on Live At The Apollo, The Royal Variety Performance, Dave’s One Night Stand, Celebrity Juice and Marco’s Kitchen Burnout.
Impersonating Elvis Presley first catapulted him into the entertainment industry in 1975. Now an accomplished comedian, actor, writer, TV presenter and fund-raiser, Lenny still cites his first love as music. Lenny returns to his roots with a funky, funny and touching show about the thing he loves most: music. Cradle To Rave is a musical journey exploring the role music has played, and will play, at every stage of Lenny’s life. Jason’s inspired, original brand of high-energy intelligent lunacy ensures that there is no other comedian like him and his sell out shows have attracted accolades including Chortle Award for Best Headliner 2007, Perrier Newcomer Award Nomination 1998 and Perrier Award Nomination 2001. ‘AN HOUR OF STAND-UP SO JOYOUS THE CLINICALLY DEPRESSED SHOULD GET IT ON PRESCRIPTION’ HHHHH METRO 5

THE CHRONICLE
Strictly Come Dancing’s Craig Revel Horwood directs an amazing cast in an extraordinary new staging of the classic musical Chess. A superb cast of West End stars including James Fox (Fame Academy, Jesus Christ Superstar), Shona White (Wicked), Daniel Koek (West Side Story), Poppy Tierney (Mary Poppins, Aspects of Love, The Witches of Eastwick), James Graeme (The Phantom of the Opera), David Erik (Dirty Dancing, The Phantom of the Opera) and Steve Varnom (The Woman in White) lead a cast of 30 actors and musicians in this unmissable production. Written by Tim Rice and ABBA’s Björn Ulvaeus and Benny Andersson, Chess has one of the greatest musical scores of all time including One Night In Bangkok, Pity The Child, Anthem, You And I and, of course, I Know Him So Well. Two of the world’s greatest chess masters battle it out at the world championships but their greatest contest is for the love of one woman. Amidst political intrigue and international conspiracies, the American and the Russian fight to win the heart of Florence Vassy in a romantic triangle that mirrors the heightened passions of the Cold War, all set to an explosive score by the composers of Mamma Mia and the lyricist of Jesus Christ Superstar and Evita.

BRAND NEW PRODUCTION
Alex Ferns (Eastenders) Iain Robertson (Sea of Souls)
Recommended age 15+. Contains strong language, scenes of violence and full frontal male nudity.
Starring Alex Ferns (Eastenders), Nicky Elliott, Iain Robertson (Sea of Souls), Paul Morrow, Stewart Porter, Alison O’Donnell, Cara Kelly and Chris Wallace. Byrne is a hard man. A fixer. His journey through the ganglands of Glasgow’s East End has taken him from teenage truant to petty criminal to gangster and to prison. ‘Ma roads mapped oot fur me. Ah keep a chib over the door an a blade in ma bedroom’ The Hard Man is an intense and stylized exploration of notorious gangster turned artist Jimmy Boyle’s early life and of the cult of male violence on the streets of Glasgow – a world dominated by struggle and brutality, success and failure, victims and perpetrators. And a world still frighteningly part of Scotland today. This brand new production is the first major revival for over thirty years. 8

EXPLODING ONTO THE STAGE!
Footloose explodes onto the stage with classic 80s anthems including Holding Out For A Hero, Almost Paradise, Let’s Hear It For The Boy, and of course the title track, Footloose. Life in small-town Bomont is peaceful until city boy, Ren, arrives. Breaking every taboo, Ren brings dance back to the heart of a town held back by the memory of a tragedy. Award-winning actor Steven Pinder (Brookside, Doctors) takes to the stage as Reverend Shaw Moore. He is joined by star of the future Max Milner, who plays Ren, a role that launched the careers of Kevin Bacon following the iconic 1984 film and Derek Hough, who shot to fame in the musical production in 2006 and has since been crowned champion three times on hit US show Dancing with the Stars. Based on the hit 80s movie (which also launched the career of Sarah Jessica Parker and John Lithgow), Footloose has become a stage musical phenomenon. From Broadway to the West End and touring across the UK, it is packed full of electrifying dance routines, guaranteed to get you to your feet. Dancing is not a crime; to miss Footloose would be!

CORPORATE OPPORTUNITIES AND SEAT DEDICATION
CREATIVE LEARNING
Creative Learning at the King’s and Theatre Royal offers a wide mix of high quality activities to celebrate all aspects of theatre, providing the chance for people of all ages to discover new creative skills and learn about our productions, our theatres and the people behind the scenes. Nearly every week of the year we provide a workshop or arts experience to a nursery, school, college or community group, opening a door into the world of theatre making. Over the coming season activities include workshops to compliment the breathtaking new programme from Rambert Dance Company, the award-winning Journey’s End direct from London’s West End and the powerful new revival of The Hard Man as well as regular opportunities for work placements, creative industry insight days, talks and backstage tours.
A highlight is the annual Summer School; a unique opportunity for young people aged 8 to 16 years to perform on the main-stage of the Theatre Royal with full support from our technical and production team. Later in the year, as part of a Heritage Lottery bid, we launch an exciting new collaboration with multi award-winning theatre company Wee Stories exploring the heritage of the King’s Theatre. A firm favourite in the dance calendar is Go Dance 12; if you are involved in a group and interested in taking part please get in touch.
