A compelling award-winning musical, Over the Rainbow tells the life story of legendary artist Eva Cassidy through dramatic scenes and stunning live renditions of her music - including a haunting interpretation of Somewhere Over the Rainbow. From its first performance in 2004, Over the Rainbow has moved people immensely with sell-out performances and standing ovations throughout the UK and Europe.
‘Murder, greed, corruption, exploitation, adultery and treachery - all those things we hold near and dear to our hearts’ - so begins the international award winning musical Chicago starring Marti Pellow as Billy Flynn and Emma Barton (EastEnders) as Roxie Hart. Based on real life events back in the roaring 1920s, nightclub singer Roxie Hart shoots her lover and along with Cell Block rival, double-murderess Velma Kelly, they fight to keep from death row with the help of smooth talking lawyer, Billy Flynn. Created by the musical theatre talents of John Kander, Fred Ebb and legendary choreographer Bob Fosse, Chicago’s sexy, sassy score includes All That Jazz and Razzle Dazzle. With 6 Tony, 2 Olivier, 1 Grammy, 2 Bafta and 6 Academy Awards, Chicago truly is ‘The sharpest, slickest show on the block’ The Times. A nightclub singer, a double-murderess, a smooth-talking lawyer and a cell block of sin: it would be a crime to miss it.

Rhod Gilbert & The Cat That Looked Like Nicholas Lyndhurst Sat 13 Feb 7.30pm Following last year’s sell-out tour and sensational performances on The Royal Variety Performance, Live At The Apollo, and Michael McIntyre’s Comedy Roadshow, the Welsh wonder is back on the road with a brand-new show. Stung by accusations that he over-reacts, this year Rhod sets out on an emotional rollercoaster of a journey to discover the truth. Is he, as he believes, a visionary in a sea of closed minds, or has he, as everyone else believes, got anger-management problems? 7
ONE NIGHTERS
TWO UNIQUE THEATRICAL EXPERIENCES NOT TO BE MISSED Fascinating Aida starring Dilly Keane, Adèle Anderson & Liza Pulman Wed 7 Apr 7.30pm Britain’s top female comedy trio are 25 years old. Well, actually, they’re older than that and for those of you who thought they’d retired, this isn’t a comeback; it’s a chance for you to help them celebrate this auspicious birthday. They’re doing it for the fun, not the money, which will soon be worthless anyway. Dillie, Adèle and Liza look forward to entertaining you with some new songs. Thrill to the beauty of the harmonies, marvel at the intricate rhymes and, if you’re one of their older fans, remember to switch your hearing aid to the theatre’s loop system to avoid unpleasant whistling.
Jimmy Carr Rapier Wit Mon 24 & Tue 25 May 8pm If you only see one comedy show this year - what’s the matter with you? Get out more. A ‘rapier’ is the long sword of a gentleman. ‘Rapier wit’ is defined as clever, quick, intelligent humour. Please note, Jimmy Carr doesn’t have ‘the long sword of a gentleman’ and even if you like him, ‘clever, quick and intelligent’ is a bit of a stretch.
Dara O Briain Sat 29 May 8pm Award-winning stand-up comedian and host of BBC2’s Mock The Week Dara O Briain hits the road again. Don’t miss this unique opportunity to catch the most charming, charismatic, fast-talking funnyman working on the UK’s live comedy circuit today. Book early to avoid disappointment. MATTHEW BOURNE’S SENSATIONAL MASTERPIECE
★★★★★ ‘As bold and beautiful as ever’ Daily Telegraph
When it premiered at Sadler’s Wells in 1995, Matthew Bourne’s triumphant modern interpretation of Swan Lake turned tradition upside down, taking the dance world by storm. Now firmly crowned as a modern day classic, this iconic production is perhaps best-known for replacing the traditional female corps de ballet with a menacing male ensemble. Matthew Bourne blends dance, humour and spectacle with extravagant, award-winning designs by Lez Brotherston, to create a provocative and powerful Swan Lake for our times. Collecting over 30 international theatre awards including 3 Tonys, Swan Lake has been acclaimed as a landmark achievement on the international stage. It has become the longest running ballet in the West End and on Broadway and enjoyed four hugely successful tours in the UK and thrilled audiences all over the world. 10

Based on the classic novel Rita Hayworth and Shawshank Redemption by Stephen King, this iconic story inspired the perennially popular film. Now the smash-hit play comes direct from the West End to Milton Keynes Theatre for one week only. Andy Dufresne is a young and successful banker whose life changes drastically when he is convicted of the murder of his wife and her lover and sentenced to two life sentences. Andy is sent to the notorious Shawshank Prison, where he is stripped of his life, family and freedom, and forced to endure a spirit-crushing routine. But with his quiet strength and inner courage, there is one thing that Andy never loses in the face of his adversity and that is hope. Slowly he gains the respect of the guards and his fellow inmates, especially long-time convict Red, the prison ‘fixer’. This unforgettable tale of courage, friendship and daring to hope is adapted for the stage by Owen O’Neill and Dave Johns and directed by Peter Sheridan. Tosca by Puccini Carmen by Bizet The Abduction from the Seraglio by Mozart Fall in love this Spring as Welsh National Opera performs two of the greatest love stories ever sung. Tosca is one of the best loved of all operas. A tale of desire, deception and self-sacrifice set in Rome at the time of Napoleon, highlights include the poignant arias Vissi d’arte (made famous by Maria Callas) and E lucevan le stelle. Carmen is Bizet’s masterpiece. It is full to the brim with instantly recognisable music and has at its heart one of the most charismatic characters in opera. This classic production distils this passionate opera right down to its essence. Welsh National Opera also perform The Abduction from the Seraglio, Mozart’s exhilarating and delightful comedy in an irresistibly entertaining production set on the Orient Express of the 1920s. All performances are surtitled in English so you can follow the story on a screen above the stage throughout.

In February 2009, Alan Bennett’s Enjoy opened in the West End to rave reviews and sell-out houses, and now this extraordinary comedy visits Milton Keynes Theatre with the original cast including Alison Steadman and David Troughton. Enjoy is set in Alan Bennett’s home town of Leeds where an ageing couple are living in the city’s last back-to-back. With the demolition of the area in progress, Wilf and Connie are soon to be re-housed in a brand new maisonette with a waste disposal unit and non-slip vinyl flooring. When a sociologist comes to observe them in their daily life, normality takes a decidedly atypical turn. A dream cast includes Alison Steadman, one of our best-loved actresses. On stage she created the role of the monstrous Beverly in Mike Leigh’s Abigail’s Party and starred in The Rise and Fall of Little Voice for which she won an Olivier Award. She is also a star of the cult TV hit Gavin & Stacey. David Troughton is a veteran of many landmark Royal Shakespeare Company and National Theatre productions.
